The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) in partnership with Strata Products tested the sealing capability of Ventstop®? as part of an ongoing mine fire control and suppression research program. Ventstop®? is a multi-purpose, inflatable device that is produced by Minvent Solutions and is available world wide for use in the metal and nonmetal mining industry. Ventstop®? is also used in the Australian coal industry as a temporary ventilation control device. The device can be quickly deployed, is reusable and can be placed in horizontal and vertical mine voids to control dust, fumes and smoke. Deployment, multi-day inflation and air leakage tests were conducted at the NIOSH Lake Lynn Laboratory to determine the capability and limitations of Ventstop®? in a simulated coal mine setting. During the tests, Ventstop®? was also subjected to low level forces of a nearby methane gas ignition. It is thought that Ventstop®? could be used by the US coal mining industry to temporarily close an underground mine area in response to a fire or spontaneous combustion heating event, to temporarily redirect mine ventilation during longwall equipment moves or during stopping construction. This paper describes this inflatable temporary mine sealing technology and presents the results of the NIOSH tests. "INTRODUCTION In underground longwall coal mining, the mined-out areas or gobs frequently contain methane which can form explosive methane-air mixtures. Historically, there have been many events of mine fires and explosions recorded in the United States and other countries that have demonstrated the existence of such explosive mixtures, herein referred to as Explosive Gas Zones (EGZs), inside and around the perimeter of bleeder-ventilated longwall gobs (Loane et al., 1975; Lynn et al., 1986; Elkins, et al., 2001; McKinney et al., 2001; Dziurzynski and Wasilewski, 2012; Brune, 2013). The risk of mine explosions can increase if the EGZs migrate out from the gob into the surrounding mine entries. Several factors can induce EGZs outflowing from the gob, but the most common cause is the fluctuating barometric pressure. Atmospheric pressures change regularly every day but can fluctuate abruptly and become increasingly hazardous in adverse weather conditions. Other sudden pressure changes can result from roof falls, failing ventilation controls and fan outages. Any such fluctuation of mine ventilation pressure will disturb the pressure differential between the gob and the surrounding mine workings and may cause EGZs to outgas from the gob. The correlation between major mine explosions and abrupt barometric pressure changes has been studied and confirmed for explosions in coal mining countries including the United States, South Africa, Australia, and Poland (Hosler, 1948; Boyer, 1964; Kissell et al., 1973; Fauconnier, 1992; Hemp, 1994; Wasilewski, 2014; Belle, 2014; and Lolon, 2017). Disastrous mine explosions appear to happen more frequently during stormy weather, which, in the United States, typically occurs during the late fall and winter seasons. ROOT CAUSE AND EFFECT OF GOB BREATHING Gob breathing is the result of the pressure differential between gob internal and external pressures caused by external atmospheric pressure fluctuations that occur naturally as a result of gravitational and thermal forces in the atmosphere (Lindzen and Chapman, 1969). Other major and sudden pressure changes may be caused by fan failures, failures of ventilation controls or roof falls can also cause an unexpected gob breathing. Normal barometric fluctuations occur every day but usually do not pose an explosion risk as they occur gradually so gob pressures have sufficient time to equilibrate. More extreme fluctuations associated with cyclonic weather systems and storms often result in more rapid and larger drops or rises in barometric pressure (Hosler, 1948; Fauconnier, 1992). A study by Lolon (2017) found that the timing of historical mine explosions showed consistency with the occurrence of abrupt and intense barometric variations."

"Cash flow modelling during project evaluation is enhanced when probabilistic methods are applied to the inputs. One of the important inputs is the quarterly production profile. Typically, the steady-state production profile provided to project evaluation practitioners is deterministic, with each quarter the same as every other quarter. This is unrealistic as actual production profiles from existing mines exhibit a range or quarter-on-quarter variance. Monte Carlo stochastic simulation of the production profile can be used to provide a range of possible outcomes, but how are these ranges selected? This paper describes the use of quarterly production variance from a large database of mines worldwide as a benchmark to inform the appropriate selection of ranges. The coefficient of variation is used to rank the production from mines, with quartile analysis applied to indicate industry best, median and worst variation. Due diligence of existing mines and evaluation of future production performance can be quantitatively assessed using this approach. O ferramental utilizado em processos de conformação é de grande interesse da Engenharia de Superfícies devido às características tribológicas específicas encontradas nestes processos. Portanto busca-se sempre melhorar o ferramental para se obter menores coeficientes de atrito, desgaste e adesão de material sobre a superfície da ferramenta, sendo empregadas diversas técnicas de tratamentos superficiais como a nitretação e os revestimentos depositados via PVD. Uma variável importante do par tribológico é o coeficiente de atrito desenvolvido entre as superfícies em contato nos processos de conformação a frio, portanto foram realizados ensaios de pino-sobre-disco e ensaios DST, para determinação de coeficientes de atrito em pares tribológicos. Desta forma, chapas de aço inoxidável austenítico AISI 304 foram conformadas sobre uma superfície de um aço ferramenta DIN X100CrMoV8-1-1, com o propósito de se conhecer o atrito desenvolvido entre os materiais. As amostras foram nitretadas a plasma e ou revestida com TiCN, posteriormente, a caracterização da microestrutura e as propriedades avaliadas através de ensaios mecânicos e tribológicos. O ensaios proporcionaram obter valores de coeficiente de atrito para as condições de tratamentos e lubrificação utilizados e as análises dos resultados mostram um aumento da dureza superficial das amostras tanto nitretadas quanto revestidas com TiCN e uma redução do coeficiente de atrito significativa quando se faz uso do revestimento.

A necessidade de redução de espessura de componentes automotivos para atender a demanda por veículos mais leves, aliada ao aumento da complexidade geométrica das peças, tem exigido a utilização de aços de maior resistência e com boa conformabilidade. No entanto, a baixa capacidade de flangeamento dos aços de alta resistência limita a aplicação destes materiais em peças de geometrias mais complexas. O método de corte dos blanks tem influência decisiva na capacidade de flangeamento desses aços, que é avaliada em laboratório por ensaios de expansão de furo. Foi avaliado o efeito da folga de corte por cisalhamento e da qualidade da superfície de bordas puncionadas na capacidade de expansão de furo de aços Interstitial Free, High Strength Low Alloy e Dual Phase. Os resultados indicaram que para o aço IF, folgas entre 10% e 20% da espessura e que propiciaram bordas de corte dos tipos 2 e 3, segundo a classificação do ASM Handbook, foram as que geraram maior expansão de furo. A maximização da flangeabilidade foi conseguida para as folgas de corte de aproximadamente 15% (bordas de corte tipos 3 e 4) para os aços DP e em torno de 20% (bordas tipos 2 e 3) para os aços HSLA.

The failure of coal ribs is a major hazard in underground coal mines. Researchers from the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) have been working on the development of an engineering-based rib control method. A user-friendly standalone application, called Design of Rib Support (DORS), is being developed to ease the calculations of rib support. DORS can estimate the Primary Rib Support Density (PRSD, ton/ft2) for development loading. However, it still needs to take account of another key factor, bolt length, in rib support design. The bolt length can be estimated from the rib fracture depth, and this study focuses on the coal rib fracture depth analysis with numerical modeling and artificial neural network. A total of 331 FLAC3D simulations with different mining scenarios and rib conditions were conducted for this study. Machine learning was then used to predict coal rib fracture depth under different conditions. Based on the numerical simulations, the parameters for mining scenarios and rib conditions were collected as features for machine learning, and coal rib fracture depths were collected as the target to predict. Good data correlation (r-square) was obtained with the use of an artificial neural network. The

"It is well known that from time-to-time a vehicle will interact with a bund or windrow and often the barrier is insufficient to safely arrest that vehicle. The result of such an incident is often catastrophic. Regulations around the requirement for edge protection near pit edges vary between jurisdictions. Generally in Australia regulations tend to be around placing the responsibility on the mine operator to provide ‘adequate’ or ‘appropriate’ edge protection. Guidelines often place a minimum height of bund at between half and two-thirds the diameter of the largest tyre on-site.Safescape has identified the opportunity to improve safety in open pit edge protection and is currently developing the Edge Protector (EP) product. The EP is designed to create a vertical front face to a conventional broken rock safety bund. The fundamental premise of the product is that by creating a vertical front face to the bund, trucks cannot easily drive up over the bund and instead have to push through the rock to get to the other side.In addition to providing a safer system for arresting vehicles, the vertical front face also means that extra space is made available in the haul road. This can either be used to facilitate larger trucks or when designing a new mine, with an increase in overall pit slope.This paper outlines the research and development of a new edge protection product. Laboratórios de ensaios têm buscado implementar Sistemas de Gestão da Qualidade baseados na norma ABNT NBR ISO/IEC 17025 e procurado a acreditação de seus ensaios. A norma ASTM E517 estabelece um método de ensaio para a determinação do índice de anisotropia plástica de metais laminados, um importante parâmetro em processos de conformação mecânica por estampagem. Atualmente nenhum laboratório é acreditado pelo Inmetro na realização desse ensaio. Assim, o Laboratório de Metalurgia Física (LAMEF) da UFRGS optou por aumentar seu escopo de acreditação para abranger esse ensaio. O objetivo do trabalho é apresentar as adequações gerenciais e técnicas ao Sistema da Qualidade existente para a extensão de escopo, assim como as não conformidades encontradas e os pontos fortes para obtenção da acreditação junto ao Inmetro.

To meet the requirements of high-performance steel plates, while reducing manufacturing costs and saving energy, the advanced cooling system for plate mill (ADCOS-PM) with functions of accelerated cooling (ACC), ultra-fast cooling (UFC), and direct quenching (DQ) was researched and developed by the State Key Laboratory of Rolling and Automation (RAL). Since 2003, several sets of ADCOS-PM device were developed and implemented in industrial practice. To fully utilize the ADCOS-PM technology, the combination of various strengthening mechanisms was promoted by NG-TMCP technology and low-cost, high performance plates were produced such as pipeline steels, and high-strength construction machinery steel.

Os resíduos de mineração ou lamas são derivados dos processos de extração e beneficiamento mineral e por sua vez são geralmente armazenados em barragens de rejeitos, que são passivos ambientais. Algumas formas de recuperação de materiais desses resíduos já foram desenvolvidas, contudo a sua aplicação principal ocorre pela incorporação destes rejeitos em agregados da construção civil, visando a diminuição da geração de resíduos. Desta forma o objetivo deste trabalho é a caracterização do resíduo de lama vermelha visando a identificação de elementos que viabilizem os processos de reciclagem para a diminuição dos rejeitos. Para isso se fez uso de técnicas ambientais de classificação de resíduos, tais como: determinação da umidade; classificação granulométrica; determinação da alcalinidade; MEV/EDS e fluorescência de raios-X. As análises de caracterização convergiram para os resultados quantitativos elementar de 8,3 % de Al; 3,8 % de Na; 6,3 % de Si; 0,4 % de Fe; 0,4 % Zr; 0,004 % de Y, 2 % Ti e 0,009 % de Sc. Esta caracterização pode definir parâmetros que influenciam nos métodos para a recuperação de metais.

The light rare earth metals Nd, Pr, La, Ce as well as some alloys with Fe, are today produced in China by electrolysis in molten fluorides using oxide raw materials. A major challenge is to obtain a good cell operation without de-composing the electrolyte leading to emissions of per fluorinated carbon (PFC) green-house gases to the atmosphere. This work is focused on understanding the fundamental requirements to run the electrolysis cells for DyFe alloy production in an ef ficient and environmental friendly way. Electrolysis experiments was carried out in DyF 3-LiF melts at 1050 °C. A Fe rod was used as consumable cathode and the (consumable) anode was made of graphite. To establish at which anode potential PFC occurred and thus enabling optimisation of the oxide batch feed rate, analysis of the anode gases was performed with Fourier Transform Infrared Spectrometer (FTIR). The produced DyFe alloy was characterised by X-ray Diffraction (XRD), Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) and Energy Dispersive X-ray Spectroscopy (EDS).

The climate and location of the Red Dog Mine present several challenges to blasting operations. The mine is located north of 68º latitude, in an area of continuous permafrost. Ground temperatures are below freezing year-round and air temperatures range from -40 to 70°F (-40 to 20°C). Because there is no overland access to the mine, the entire year’s supply of bulk explosives, approximately 7,000,000lbs (3,175,000kg) is shipped in by barge during the 100 day shipping season when the port is ice-free. The first week in July is the earliest that new product arrives at the port. Emulsion usage is maximized from mid April through October when surface water fills the blastholes during drilling. This necessitates that a considerable portion of the bulk explosives are stored for 10 months or more before usage. The emulsion is routinely pumped from the ISO containers at temperatures of 20ºF (-7°C). The mine engineers conducted a testing program during the 2001-2 blasting season to identify the bulk explosives best suited for the conditions at the mine. A secondary goal was to decrease the usage of sensitized emulsion, as this is the most difficult portion of the explosives order to ship. To ensure repeatability when transferring the results to the day-to-day blasting operation, the majority of the testing was incorporated into normal blasting operations in the field. The mining methods used at Red Dog Mine make direct fragmentation analysis impractical and performance testing in the field relied primarily on VOD measurements. The products were also tested for their ability to be pumped in cold temperatures.

As soldas dissimilares de liga de níquel 182 são utilizadas em usinas nucleares para conectar tubulações de aço inoxidável com componentes fabricados em aço de baixa liga. O procedimento envolvido na soldagem dissimilar pode modificar as propriedades do material, o que afeta diretamente a junta soldada no sentido de aumento da probabilidade de incidência do processo de corrosão. Neste trabalho foi realizado a soldagem dissimilar de corpos de prova dos aços de baixa liga e aço inoxidável austenítico AISI 316L com as ligas de níquel 82 e 182. Estudou-se o comportamento frente à corrosão da junta de solda de liga 182 em ambientes ácidos contendo NaCl e Na2S2O3 empregando-se técnicas eletroquímicas. Ensaios de polarização anódica potenciodinâmica foram utilizados para caracterizar o comportamento de corrosão localizada do material. Os resultados mostraram que o comportamento eletroquímico da junta de solda está relacionado com o aporte térmico e a presença ou não de oxigênio no meio.

Reformadores primários são amplamente adotados em indústrias de fertilizantes. Nos tubos catalisadores que ficam localizados na zona de radiação ocorrem as reações que produzem o hidrogênio. Também nesta zona são localizados os tubos risers que levam os gases produzidos para o reformador secundário. A fluência é um dos principais mecanismos de danos que agem nestes tubos. O objetivo deste estudo é avaliar os danos causados pela fluência em segmento de riser. Foi realizada análise dimensional, microdureza Vickers, ensaio de tração a quente e análise da fratura. Os resultados mostraram que a fluência foi o principal mecanismo de falha, sendo decorrência da exposição dos risers a temperaturas superiores a de projeto.

As demand for optimisation of mining processes increases, more attention is drawn to blast performance and fragmentation improvement. Fractures and discontinuities are among the most influential factors in blast results, therefore one of the initial steps towards blast optimisation is to gather information about the rock mass and integrate it in blast design. This paper presents a method for assessment of rock mass discontinuities and integrating it in production blasts in the Aitik open pit copper mine in Sweden.3D photogrammetric techniques were utilised to map discontinuities and distinguish domains of similar geologic structures in the pit. As a pilot study for a future campaign, four different initiation directions were tested through six pilot blasts in one of the domains. The results were compared in terms of swell and loading efficiency of rope shovels to identify the correlation between blast performance and initiation direction compared to major discontinuity families.It was established that in the trial domain, blasts initiated towards north or north-west yielded larger swell and better performance of loading. Comparing these blasts with discontinuity families show that there is a correlation between blast performance and initiation direction according to the dip and strike of these discontinuities. Such knowledge can be used for future blasts in the same domain to increase long-term operational efficiency through slight modifications in drill pattern and initiation design.CITATION:Beyglou, A, Schunnesson, H, Johansson, D and Johansson, N, 2015. Image-based fragmentation analysis is increasingly utilized in blasting operations to evaluate particle size distribution in a non-intrusive and efficient manner. However, the accuracy of optical granulometry systems can vary significantly with particle size. Higher precision is typically achieved for larger fragments, generally those greater than golf ball size when using drone-based orthomosaic analysis. In contrast, the detection and delineation of fine particles become less reliable due to constraints such as pixel resolution, particle overlap, and partial burial within the muck pile. This variability does not undermine the value of image analysis but rather highlights the need for a deeper understanding of its operational thresholds and the integration of complementary methods or calibration approaches to improve its reliability across the entire particle size distribution. Technologies such as WipFrag, originally developed in the 1980s, are designed to conduct in-situ fragmentation analysis within complex blast environments, where fines are often obscured by larger fragments. The challenge becomes more significant in blast rounds exhibiting wide gradation ranges and increased fines, particularly resulting from excessive energy concentration in high-pressure zones near the borehole. Previously, this issue was addressed through methods such as analytical correction, zoom-merge correction, and empirical calibration using Rosin-Rammler and Swebrec distribution models. However, these traditional empirical calibration approaches, particularly those tied to distribution functions like Rosin-Rammler have shown limitations, especially in accurately representing the fine region of the fragmentation curve. In contrast, the recently developed xP-fan model, which incorporates the relationship between powder factor and fragment size, introduces the fragmentation energy fan principle which Kuz-Ram model does not entail. This paper presents a study on the application of the novel xP-fan calibration to enhance the accuracy of optical granulometry systems. The findings demonstrate how xP-fan help calibrate the fine region of the PSD without deflecting the maximum size.

Mine seismicity is influenced by the mechanical properties of both near-seam strata and overburden/underburden and the prudent selection of mining methods and mine layout designs, utilizing sitespecific structural setting of the mines. The importance of adequate data collection, monitoring, and prudent structural designs has long been recognized and utilized in many U.S. operations with adequate engineering resources. In this paper, two case studies of historic seismic events and contributing factors, in deep coal and trona mines with overburden thickness exceeding 1,500 ft, are reviewed using observations and analysis. By back analyzing the overburden response in a historic room-and-pillar coal mine, the overburden collapse mechanism associated with a 3.3 magnitude seismic event is reviewed as well as the need for improvements in designs including panel and barrier pillar widths. Similar high-order seismic events were also experienced in trona mines of the Green River Basin during 1990s, interrupting room-and-pillar mining and creating ground control concerns. Efforts to improve structural mine designs are described in this paper leading to stable and productive operations for decades following the high-order seismic events in both coal and trona case studies. These efforts included improving room-and-pillar extraction layouts and utilizing properly designed longwall mining techniques that were verified using long-term geotechnical instrumentation. The study mines are located on the Wasatch Plateau (WP), Utah and in the Green River Basin (GRB), Wyoming. More recently, in Utah’s East Mountain alone, Energy West Mining Company (EWMC) has extracted some 165 million tons of coal without any significant incidents. Overall, favorable geologic conditions and prudent mine layout designs are key elements to this successful experience in both single- and two-seam layouts. Utilization of conservatively designed longwall mining technique in the GRB has been geotechnically stable, using reported experience in 15 panels and monitoring results in the Northwest (NW) District with measurable longwallinduced seismicity being rare. These studies demonstrate a considerable amount of progress that has been made within the last four decades in the application of longwall mining technique, integrated monitoring, and analyses for the verification of structural designs in mines in the United States.

O conhecimento sobre o comportamento do revestimento refratário dolomítico durante a etapa do refino de aço é fundamental para se atender às exigências técnicas de qualidade e o aumento da produção de aço. É particularmente importante que os mecanismos de corrosão dos refratários dolomíticos sejam bem compreendidos, principalmente, em operações de exceção, nas quais as exigências metalúrgicas causem forte dano ao revestimento, prejudicando não somente o desempenho do mesmo, mas também gerando um risco à segurança operacional. Este trabalho visa à caracterização técnica da camada protetora (coating) de silicato dicálcico (C2S), a qual se origina da reação entre as escórias silicosas e os refratários dolomíticos. As amostras de coating foram caracterizadas quanto à composição química, fases formadas e microestrutura. Estudou-se uma panela retirada de operação, por dano aos refratários, retirando-se amostras de diferentes regiões. Em duas amostras, juntamente com o C2S e o periclásio, foi observado à presença de fases à base de silicato de baixa fusibilidade como a cuspidina, indicando que o coating foi atacado por uma escória com elevado teor de fluorita.

O estaqueamento profundo é necessário para obter fundações firmes e confiáveis, mesmo em solos de baixa resistência. Após completar a soldagem entre dois perfis, através do uso de talas, que compõe uma estaca de uma fundação profunda, essa união é inserida, juntamente com o restante da viga, através de uma máquina de estaqueamento. Neste processo a região da emenda pode sofrer choque térmico devido à umidade presente no solo. Este trabalho visa demonstrar a viabilidade da imediata inserção (‘cravação’) no solo de juntas entre perfis de aço ASTM A572 Grau 50, efetuadas através da operação de soldagem com eletrodo revestido (E 7018), simulada através de uma condição de maior criticidade pelo processo de arame tubular.
