DURING the winter of 1937, the writer visited a West Virginia stone, quarry at which the overburden is stripped hydraulically. The quarry is in a bed of limestone, about 200 ft. thick, which outcrops on a hillside above a small river; the quarry face is 175 ft. high. The top of the stone is cut in all directions by erosion channels, which are filled with a tough, red clay. Some of the larger channels are 30 ft. deep and 8 ft. wide, The thickness of the clay overburden ranges from a few inches to 10 ft., the average being estimated as less than 3 feet. The topography of the district is rugged, and the hillside above the quarry face is not suited to the use of the usual mechanical methods of moving dirt. Until hydraulicking was started 10 years ago, the over-burden was dug by hand labor, dumped to the quarry floor and trans-ported to the dump in quarry cars, Cleaning deep channels was a slow and expensive process. When hydraulicking was started, the top of the quarry face was over 200 ft. above the level of the river. The pipe line was carried in a semi-circle around the top of the quarry about 200 ft. from the face and about 50 ft, above it. As there is no adequate supply of water above the quarry, the water must be pumped from the river: As quarrying pro-gressed the pipe line was moved until the discharge points are now over 300 ft. above the river. Water is pumped from the river by a four-stage centrifugal pump having a 5-in. intake and a 4-in. discharge. It is direct-connected to a 200-hp,, 2300-volt, 1760-r.p.m. induction motor. At 1760 r.p.m. the rated capacity of the pump is 750 gal. per minute under a head of 600 ft. The pump is installed in a house of frame construction on the river bank, about 10 ft, above normal water level, which also houses the pump for the mill-water supply. Above the pumps are hoisting hays into which the motors are raised whenever the river reaches flood stage.

IN THE preparation of this paper the writer has been influenced by the fact that descriptions of various means of cleaning blast-furnace gas have been published and that further descriptive treatment of the subject will probably be less interesting than a statement of conclusions with regard to preferable methods which have been reached by him as a result, of experience and observation in this country and also as a result of somewhat detailed investigation of the subject made toward the end of the year 1927 on the Continent of Europe and particularly in. Germany. Owing to various circumstances, including a cost of fuel that is extremely high in relation to the wages of labor, the German iron and steel industry has accumulated experience in gas washing which is as yet in part lacking in the United States of America. The paper begins with a statement regarding the economics of the use of blast-furnace gas, then considers the principle's and practices employed in its purification. USES OF BLAST-FURNACE GAS For many reasons having to do with the utilization of coke-oven and blast-furnace gases in steel manufacture and with the use of hot metal, the blast furnace is now usually a part of a steel-producing unit, which also includes coke plant and rolling mill. Therefore both blast-furnace and coke-oven gas are usually applicable to any of the iron and steel-making processes, including the generation of power, and their allocation in any given works should be considered as a single problem. The uses to which blast-furnace gas, either alone or mixed with coke-oven gas may be put, include the following: Regenerative Heating of Air for the Blast Furnace.-This is the oldest and metallurgically the most important of all uses. It is universally performed with unmixed blast-furnace gas and under proper conditions should require not over 23.5 per cent. of the total gas generated for a blast temperature of 1350° F. For Steam-raising Purposes.-This is almost universally done with unmixed blast-furnace gas. From the standpoint of quantity used, it is at the present time the most important application in American steel-works practice.

In the West, capitalists have expended many millions of dollars developing the low-grade porphyry ores of copper. Half a dozen of these great enterprises have proved to be wonderful commercial successes. They have demanded improved crushing and concentrating machinery and consequently it has been developed. Many improved methods, cheap power, superior business organization, all these have contributed to this success, but the main feature is the handling of the material in enormous quantities, on a manufacturing scale. The mining chance of "striking it rich" has been eliminated by the manufacturing certainty of handling large quantities of material of known value, which while of relatively low grade, is available in large tonnages, assuring a supply for many years' run of the mill. Then the returns on the money invested are sure. The concentration of low-grade magnetic iron ores, separating the magnetite crystals from the gangue by the use of magnets, is a field of work in which the lessons taught by the development of the porphyry coppers can be studied to advantage. Large-scale operations, and the liberal expenditure of enough money at the start to insure the most economical operations, are the means of securing the desired results. The problem is to utilize millions of tons, and we may safely say billions of tons, of now worthless iron-bearing rock and to produce from it 10,000,000 to 20,000,000 tons per year of high-grade ore carrying 60 per cent. iron or higher; to take the lean material as found in nature, varying widely in iron content, and bring it up to a uniform standard of shipping ore. At present these ores are mined carrying from 25 to 50 per cent, iron, and the shipping product is brought up to 60 or 65 per cent. Fe. If future economies of operation make it possible to extend this process so that 15 per cent. iron in the crude ore can be treated as a commercial success, the additional tonnage available will be enormous. A 15 per cent. Fe crude ore raised to 60 per cent. Fe concentrate with 5 per cent.

"Two instrumented test piles were simultaneously subjected to a static lateral load test by jacking the piles apart. One of the piles was loaded in axial compression via kentledge during the lateral load test. Both piles were constructed in an identical manner. These piles were constructed and tested as part of a construction-phase load test program for a floodwall improvement project along the Missouri River in Kansas City, Kansas. Details of the subsurface conditions, drilled pile construction, instrumentation, and load testing procedures are described. Data collected during testing of the piles are presented and compared. Potential effects of the axial compressive load related to observed differences in pile lateral response are discussed.INTRODUCTIONTwo instrumented test piles were simultaneously subjected to a static lateral load with one of the piles also subject to a combined axial load during testing. The load test program was part of a floodwall improvement project in Kansas City, Kansas. Known as the BPU floodwall, the floodwall runs along the south bank of the Missouri River at a Kansas City Board of Public Utilities power generation and water treatment facility. The project location is shown in Fig. 1.Drilled, 2-ft (610-mm) diameter piles were designated by the designer, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (COE), as the foundation type for supporting extended floodwall footings. The drilled piles are fully cased, cast-in-place concrete, reinforced with a steel 12x74 (310x110) H-pile. In order to test soil lateral response and pile structural response under combined loading, the COE required that both a lateral test and combined lateral and axial test pile be constructed and tested. In order to most efficiently test both piles and to allow for simpler comparison, the two piles were simultaneously laterally loaded by jacking the piles apart, applying a maximum lateral load of 195 kips (867 kN). A constant axial load was applied to the combined test pile by kentledge prior to lateral loading and was maintained for the duration of the lateral load test. The total weight of the kentledge was 61.5 kips (274 kN). Fig. 2 shows the test setup."

"Dust originated from the Iron Blast Furnace (BF) and the Basic Oxygen Furnace (BOF) containing alkalis and zinc are not completely recycled because due affects the process efficiency. These types of dust represents an economical lost as a consequence of values contents of iron and carbon. Several processes in aqueous media have been developed to treat the steelmaking dust. This work presents a laboratory study for reduce zinc and alkali containing in BF and BOF dust, using different acid and alkaline solutions and oxidants as ozone. The results obtained show that the elimination of zinc and alkalis can vary from 5 % to 80 % depending on the treatment conditions (the solution, the oxidant and the temperature). The dust obtained from this treatment can to be recycling to the steelmaking processes to recovery iron and carbon values.IntroductionEach one of the steel making industry processes generate several sub-products and residues containing useful units of iron, carbon and other elements that are or could be recycled to the productive process. Some of those sub products are the dust from the gas cleaning system of the blast furnace and the dust from BOF reductive process; such dusts are sent to the sedimentary lagoons. The dust represent a lost of 2 % of the total iron and coal mineral’s content feed to the process.The typical iron, carbon and zinc content of the blast furnace dust is approximately 40, 24 and 0.3 % and the content of the BOF dust are 50, 15 and 0.9 % weight respectively, with physics - chemical characteristics that became them susceptible to be agglomerated and feed to the blast furnace. But the high content of zinc does not allow recycling it into the process. At the blast furnace the presence of zinc propitiate the formation of film in the furnace wall; these elements are vaporized in the low section of the cube of the furnace and they are dragged by the gases to the top and condensed again at the cube. Part of these condensed materials strongly adheres to the furnace cover harming it and reducing the empty space of that section, causing eventually a severe perturbation of the ascendant gas flux [1]."

Rimming steels derive their name from their action during solidification in the molds. As a result of incomplete deoxidation, gas is evolved during freezing, and the metal has a characteristic rolling action. The metal rises along the mold walls and descends in the center of the ingot. This action keeps the top of the ingot open and the advancing rim of solid metal can be seen. The rim grows until the rolling action is insufficient to prevent the top of the ingot from freezing or until the action is stopped by capping the ingot with a heavy plate. The violence of the reaction and its characteristics, such as growth or drop in the molds, are determined by the composition, the furnace practice, and the deoxidation in the ladle and in the molds. Though rimming steels represent a large proportion of the amount of plain carbon steel made, they have received comparatively little attention in the technical literature. The manufacture of rimming steels has been described by Hibbard,1,2 Fleming,3 Pierce4 and Jackson.5 The reactions occurring during rimming have been considered from the theoretical point of view by Chipman and Samarin.? The structure of rimmed-steel ingots has been discussed by Nead and one of the present authors6 Meyer: in studying segregation, investigated the distribution of carbon, sulphur and phosphorus in rimmed-steel ingots by analyzing the rim and core of blooms. In their studies of segregation, the Joint Committee of the Iron and Steel Institute and the British Iron and Steel Federation9 studied distribution in one billet and one ingot of rimmed steel. A detailed study of the distribution throughout the ingot has not been published. The present investigation was undertaken to determine accurately the distribution of carbon, manganese and sulphur in normal rimmed ingots and the general distribution of other common elements present. The study included some work on the effect of pouring conditions and furnace practice on the distribution, though there is still much to be done in this direction. The structure of a rimmed ingot that has been split by dynamiting and a schematic diagram of the zones in the ingot are illustrated in Fig. 1.

"Al-Sc-Zr alloys form thermally stable L12 precipitates which provide high temperature strength. Although the overall fraction of L12 Al3Sc and Al3Zr may be increased by increasing scandium (Sc) and zirconium (Zr) content, such additions may increase primary phase fractions and do not produce desirable secondary phase morphologies. Rapid solidification techniques, such as melt spinning, increase solute atom concentration within the matrix. When the supersaturated matrix is aged, higher precipitate volume fractions at low Sc and Zr levels can be achieved improving high temperature strength. Melt spinning was used to rapidly solidify (107 k/s) a thin ribbon of Al-0.5Sc-0.4Zr at. %. The ribbon was compacted and extruded into 99.8% dense rods, and then aged using multi-step isochronal heat treatment up to 600°C. Precipitation strengthening was evaluated by ambient hardness measurement. The ambient hardness of melt-spun ribbon after precipitation hardening increased by 450 MPa (~67% increment) during isochronal heat treatment.INTRODUCTION Small Sc and Zr additions to aluminum improve strength and creep resistance above 300°C due to tri-aluminide precipitation of Al3(Sc,Zr) in L12 structures similar to ??, Ni3(Al,Ti) in nickel superalloy, but the Al3(Sc,Zr) particles have a Sc-rich core surrounded by Zr-rich shell (Figure 1). The Al3Zr shell limits atomic transport between the Al3Sc core and the matrix and reduces coherency strain. These factors reduce precipitate coarsening rate at elevated temperature (Bergner & Van Chi, 1977; Fujikawa, 1997; Knipling et al., 2011; Clouet et al., 2006).Figure 1. "SUMMARY The importance of information management was recognised in surface construction industry decades ago, and has increasingly being recognised through formal process and laws. Around the world, these laws and codes of practice are currently being drafted and enacted, to reflect the development of software tools and corresponding increasing adoption by industry. This paper deals with specifics of implementing information modelling in tunnelling business utilising BIM (Building Information Modelling) technology developed for buildings as well as similar technology developed for mining industry. Although BIM is recognized initially as a 3D digital representation of physical and functional characteristics of a facility, the real benefits come when complex capability through construction sequencing and even detailed programming (4D) and cost capabilities (5D) are included. INFORMATION MODELLING The Architecture, Engineering and Construction (AEC) industry requires the production of design and construction information, which involves the input from several teams. The tasks allocated to each team need to be carried out in a particular order and coordinated in order to benefit all those involved and the project itself; this is known as “collaborative working”. To ensure the quality, and guarantee that information can be used without change or interpretation, working processes and standards needs to be agreed upon or else it will hinder collaboration and have a negative impact on project delivery. Case studies show that the additional capital delivery costs due to uncoordinated, inaccurate and ambiguous information amounts to 20-25%. The solution to overcome these problems and improve collaborative working in a project is the adoption of BIM. It is a modern approach to the design, documentation, delivery, and life cycle management through the use of project information databases coupled with object-based parametric modelling. BIM requires traditional practices shifting from simple drafting to using 3D native models for building design environment. Additionally, it requires that models are equipped with information that has been traditionally decoupled in a text or other kinds of documents. The goal is not in creating a 3D graphic representation of design intent; rather, it is a comprehensive information management tool based on the simulation of design and construction build around a central repository."

"The liberation modelling of mineral particles using mineral liberation analysis have been used in the past to model comminution and concentration processes. In this work this concept has been taken a little further, using comminution and concentration for applying the mineralogical characteristics of particles. This approach is shown using the image analysis, mineral liberation analysis and the distribution density functions for liberation modelling. The work focused on the effect of comminution on mineral liberation for liberation modelling. To model this, effect the mineral liberation of the particles using distribution density and the cumulative distribution was linked to the image analysis of the ore particles. These properties have been estimated by statistical measures such as the distribution density and liberation grade, which were extracted from MLA data and images analysis, using proper image analysis and techniques based on MATLAB software. A comparison of different tungsten ores of liberated particles, has been introduced and evaluated by estimated results and image analysis.INTRODUCTION The chief economic minerals of tungsten are wolframite [(Fe,Mn) WO4] and scheelite(CaWO4), and approximately two-thirds of the world tungsten reserves consist of scheelite deposits (Lassner and Schubert, 1999). Tungsten has unique properties and is widely used in various industrial high strength and high temperature applications. It occurs coarsely aggregated in low grade ores. Most of tungsten ores, particularly scheelite, wolframite and ferberite, occur in deposits with very low content of WO3 (0.1–2.5%) that is not economically viable to apply directly metallurgical methods to extract tungsten (Martins, 2014). Tungsten is considered as a critical metal by the European Union by the economic importance and also the high supply risk (European Commission, 2014; Chakhmouradian et al., 2015).Currently, scheelite is playing an increasingly important role in tungsten industry because the mineral reserve of wolframite is getting depleted after gradual exploitation and utilization (Min et al., 2016). In mineral processing, the liberation of valuable mineral from the gangue determines the efficiency of subsequent separation processes. The liberation characteristics of an ore are primarily dependent on its texture, the association of mineral in the host matrix of gangue minerals, and to some extent on the grinding process (Zhang and Subasinghe; 2013)."

Probably the earliest sinter from lead ore was made in the product sinter boxes attached to some hand reverberatory roasters. The ore was drawn from the roaster bed when dead roasted, and then by laborious effort fritted together by rabbling at a high temperature in the sinter box. This was not a true sinter, but was a great improvement over the dusty dead-roasted fine ores. The Huntington-Heberlein pots were the first real advance in the art, and produced some real sinter. They required that the sulphides be preroasted to 5 or 6 per cent sulphur, and the long cycle of operating and deep bed of material used in the pots fostered the formation of densely fused material and fines. This necessitated crushing of the densely fused cake and returning to the next charge large amounts of fines screened out. The Huntington-Heberlein pots made comparatively high lead losses because the deep bed and high internal temperature together favored the volatilization of lead. Lime (CaO) was added to the charges, and this addition constituted the patented feature of the Huntington-Heberlein process. Its sole function we now know was to act as an isolator of the sulphide particles, and any other substance—for instance, iron oxide—of equal fineness performed the same function. The Savelsberg process used limestone instead of burned lime, and in this there was a definite advantage. The converting of CaCO3, to CaO is a highly endothermic reaction, so the lime acted not only as an isolator of sulphide particles but absorbed excess heat and to some extent prevented premature fusion of the sulphides. The Carmichael-Bradford process used gypsum instead of limestone, and had the disadvantage of adding more sulphur to a charge from which it was desired to eliminate sulphur. Here again the gypsum served only as an infusible isolator of sulphide particles. The first Dwight-Lloyd apparatus to sinter lead ores commercially was installed at Perth Amboy in 1907. The fact that lime in any form was necessary to sintering was quickly disproved by making excellent sinter from Bunker Hill and Sullivan table concentrates, silica sand and iron oxide only.

"Pumpable crib support for longwall gates and ventilation bleeder entries is becoming more prevalent in United States coal mines (Figure 1). The pumpable crib selection and spacing design has been greatly refined by the full-scale testing conducted at the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) Mine Roof Simulator. The peak load on 24-, 27-, 30-, and 36- inch diameter J-Cribs is, on average, 300, 400, 450, and 650 kips, respectively. Standard J-Cribs have useful deformation of approximately 8 inches. The maximum useful deformation can be extended to 18–20 inches with an exterior reinforcement layer or an interior double wall, for all four J-Crib diameters. J-Crib diameter is primarily limited by a maximum 4.5:1 height-to-diameter aspect ratio. Spacing is controlled by immediate roof stability, anticipated pillar deformation, and roof bolting practice. Approximately 500,000 J-Cribs have been successfully placed in 18 different United States longwall coal mines. The selection and spacing of the J-Crib utilized to date is summarized for each mine.IntroductionLongwall productivity and safety depend on ground stability in gate and ventilation bleeder entries. Numerous support technologies have been developed and employed in United States longwall mines since the 1990s to replace traditional wooden cribbing. Many, if not all, of these technologies have been evaluated at the NIOSH Pittsburgh Research Laboratory since the mid-1990s (Mucho, et al., 1999). The NIOSH Mine Roof Simulator has a 3,000-kip vertical load and 24-inch displacement capacity, which has facilitated in-depth analysis of complex multimaterial support technologies like the pumpable crib. The extreme cost and human exposure risk associated with modern longwall mining prevent the trial and error development that would have been required absent the Mine Roof Simulator research. As a direct result of this research, pumpable cribs are becoming a major component of the standing support industry, providing the peak capacity and extended deformation characteristics necessary for successful gate and bleeder support. Recent research by Zhang, et al. (2012) and others have defined the required performance characteristics."

"The data that many mineral processing plants make use of, is provided by samples taken from sampling systems which are inadequately designed or improperly maintained, and therefore cause detrimental effects to plant operations, production planning and metallurgical accounting! Poorly designed or maintained sampling systems will likely produce low probability samples which give the operator a false sense of security of the product and the process. If data is the basis for action (Flintoff, 1992, p.2), then using the resulting suspect or bad assays by operators, control systems, or metallurgist and administration personnel will act and make decisions which may adversely affect the profitability of a processing plant. Here we will discuss some of the fundamental sampling problems, propagation of errors and a method to estimate what impact this has on an operations Net Smelter Return.INTRODUCTIONIn order to control a mineral processing plant at its best potential, it is necessary to obtain the best possible measurement results of the metal or mineral in question. The sample which is delivered to a measuring instrument, or lab, needs to be of the highest probability to be able to achieve this. This paper will discuss the effects of sampling errors on grade / recovery and grade / Net Smelter Return (NSR) and provide a method to estimate the monetary advantages of using probabilistic sampling in a processing plant.REVIEW OF SAMPLINGSampling, by definition, is the removal of a small representative portion from a total consignment, or flow, for the purpose of accounting or process control.• A sample can only be considered representative, if each and every increment collected, in each of the sampling stages, is representative.• Each particle of the sampling lot must have the same probability of being included in the final sample.• If both of the above conditions are met, then the final sample will be representative of the complete sampling lot.It is commonly known that in order to take truly representative and probabilistic sample, best practices indicate that:• The total stream should be sampled.• The sample cutter should intersect the sample at right angles to the flow.• The sample cutter should travel through the stream at a linear and constant speed and the speed deviations should be less than 5%."

"Triboelectric separation of ilmenite ore based on the tribocharge differences between ilmenite and gangue minerals was conducted in this study. Triboelectric characteristics of ilmenite and its associated minerals were studied using polyvinyl chloride (PVC), pentatricopeptide repeats (PPR), copper, polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA), stainless steel (SS), teflon and quartz glass (QG) tribochargers in lab triboelectric unit. Results demonstrated that the ilmenite particles tribocharged positively while gangue minerals tribocharged negatively using PVC as tribocharger. The particle size also has a significant effect on tribocharge, and the -0.125+0.074 mm is the optimal size fraction of triboelectric separation. Charge-mass ratios of minerals increase with the increases of tribocharging length, but the increasing rate gradually reduce. At 1.5 m tribocharging length, charge-mass ratios of ilmenite, quartz, feldspar and mica are up to 6.07 nC/g, -6.05 nC/g, -4.30 nC/g and -4.56 nC/g, respectively. Based on the triboelectric characteristics of each mineral, triboelectric separation of ilmenite was conducted, and the grade of ilmenite ore increased from 15.47% to 28.40%. INTRODUCTION As a transition metal titanium plays an irreplaceable role in medical, aerospace and materials due to its light weight, high strength and corrosion resistance. Pure titanium dioxide is an excellent white pigment and is widely applied in industries of paint and textile. Ilmenite is the main raw material for titanium industry. For the beneficiation of ilmenite, series methods have been proposed, such as the application of dry magnetic and wet gravity separations to separate the ilmenite from the zircon and rutile. Electrostatic separation is extensively used in the beneficiation of heavy mineral sands for the recovery of rutile, zircon and ilmenite while flotation is used to separate fine ilmenite (Mehdilo et al., 2014; Fan et al., 2014). Compared with flotation and gravity separation, electrostatic separation does not consume water, and native properties of materials will not be changed and energy consumption will be reduced (Wang et al., 2014). Thus, the wide application of electrostatic separation and other dry separation methods is a trend in separation and purification industry, especially in water-scarce areas."

"The study is focused on investigating the production of synthetic rutile of 95% purity or higher from a Norwegian ilmenite ore concentrate. This was to be achieved using a sequential process involving oxidative-reductive roasting at 975°C, followed by magnetic separation to further concentrate the sample and finally leaching with 20% HCl to remove mostly Fe-based impurities leaving behind synthetic rutile. The key process parameters considered were roasting time (1 and 2 hrs), leaching temperature (100, 125 and 145°C), pulp density (15 and 25wt%) and leaching time (3 and 6 hrs). The option of directly leaching the concentrate without pre-treatment was also evaluated. Test work was conducted using samples screened to a size fraction of 105-212 µm. Samples were leached in a 1 L glass autoclave. The reactor was hermetically sealed and thus the resulting pressure was not controlled but was dependent on the process temperature. The product from leaching was calcined and analysed via XRD and SEM to determine the purity of the product. The magnetic separation step was found to be ineffective and discontinued early in the study. Thus far a product with 97% synthetic rutile purity as analysed by SEM has been produced by directly leaching the concentrate at a temperature of 145°C, pulp density of 25wt% and leaching time of 6 hrs.INTRODUCTION The study investigates the use of a process route comprising oxidative-reductive roasting, followed by magnetic separation and then hydrochloric acid leaching and calcination to produce synthetic rutile from ilmenite concentrate. The grade of synthetic rutile produced should be suitable for chlorination to produce pigment grade TiO2. Hence the proposed process should produce a product consisting of no less than 95% synthetic rutile. Additionally, the product should have no more than 1.5wt% combined content of CaO and MgO (Zhang et al., 2011) as they tend to form high-boiling-point chloride leading to the malfunctioning of fluidized bed chlorinator (Cardarelli, 2008). Finally the product should have no more than 2.1wt% of Fe2O3."

Introduction The methods used in surface, mining vary throughout the world, depending on many variables such as: the types of over- burden materials, the depth of the overburden, the thickness of the seam, and other operational choices, both financial and functional. However, the stripping machines are typically draglines, stripping shovels, excavators, scrapers, loaders, and bulldozers. In all cases the economic feasibility of mining thin seams depends on the market needs, the market location, the equipment used, the mine management, the quality of the coal, and the labor market. Slight negative combinations of these parameters have closed many mines while positive combinations allow others to exist. The limited mobility or slow movement of large stripping shovels, draglines, and bucket wheel excavators make them more economically fitted to areas where large quantities of overburden are to be moved. This is necessary to keep the transfer and setup time between pits a negligibly small percent of the total operational time. Equipment such as the scrapers, loaders, backhoes, trucks, and bulldozers that are either very mobile or can be trailered is more versatile and can be used in the smaller area mines.* Mobile equipment is also more practical in areas with shallow overburden because of the constant movement required while removing overburden. In thin coal seams the equipment is usually paired such that the operational equipment can be listed as: (1) dragline-loader, (2) shovel-truck- loader, (3) scraper-loader. (4) loader-truck-loader, or (5) loader-loader. In these operations the overburden is removed with the first machine(s) of the pairing and the loader or loaders are used for coal production. Recent articles in Coal Age (Chironis, 1978) and Mining Engineering (Wiebmer, 1978) have discussed varying philosophies in mining similar seams of coal. One operator uses draglines for competitive mining while the other uses scrapers for the same purpose. Both cite strong cases sup- porting their choice of equipment as good sound economic decisions and their success supports their choices. The drag-line operation is adding new larger draglines to decrease the cost of mining, rather than to increase coal production. AN extended study of dustproofing Freeport-seam coal has empha-sized several fundamental features in the successful treating of bituminous coals. The extent of the exposed surface area and its absorption proper-ties for the dust-retaining film were found to be the most critical factors affecting the efficiency of fly-dust prevention. From recently published screen data and specific surface-area measure-ments on United Kingdom coals, an approximation of the surface exposed by mine-run coal and by 1-in. slack was made. The total surface area exposed by an average ton of this mine-run coal was estimated at 3768 sq. yd., while a ton of 1-in. slack represents a total surface area of 8779 sq. yd. with no additions for porosity. It is important in coal treating to consider that in mine-run coal the fraction above 1/4 in. in size represents 79.5 per cent of the total weight, but only 4 per cent of the total surface, while the fraction below 150 mesh contains 47 per cent of the total surface and only 1.2 per cent of the total weight. Also, one should appreciate that, in a 1-in. slack, the domestic stoker fraction (1 in. to 8 mesh) contains 76.3 per cent of the weight and 8.2 per cent of the surface, while the fraction below 150 mesh represents 3.3 per cent by weight and 54.8 per cent by sur-face area. Wax extraction data on 1-in. to 0 slack from mine-run treated Free-port-seam coal showed that the coating was distributed uniformly as a function of exposed surface; hence, nonuniformly on a weight basis. This distribution of the coating on mine-run coal therefore limits the extent of treating that is desirable on bituminous coal at this point in the preparation. The treatment of Freeport mine-run coal before it reached the tipple gave a 70 to 80 per cent reduction of fly-dust in the tipple, a satisfactory treated commercial slack coal, and an indicated change in the trend of tipple degradation. The premium-treated domestic sizes required a supplemental treatment for complete dustproofness.

The Mining Law of New Pork, contained in Title XI., Chapter IX., Part One of the Revised Statutes, is as follows: Section 1. All mines of other metals discovered, or hereafter to be discovered, upon any lands owned by persons not being citizens of any of the United States. (3.) All mines of other metals discovered, or hereafter to be discovered, upon lands owned by a citizen of any of the United States, the ore of which, upon an average, shall contain less than two equal third parts in value of copper, tin, iron, and lead, or any of those metals. Sec. 2. All mines and all minerals and fossils discovered, or hereafter to be discovered, upon any lands belonging to the people of this State, are, and shall be, the property of the people, subject to the provisions hereinafter made to encourage the discovery thereof. Sec. 3. All mines of whatever description, other than mines of gold and silver, discovered, or hereafter to be discovered, upon any lands owned by a citizen of any of the United States, the ore of which, upon an average, shall contain two equal third parts or more, in value, of copper, tin, iron, and lead, or any of those metals, shall belong to the owner of such land. "Reducing the amount of zinc and iron in lead concentrate is one of the important aspects of processing in lead and zinc flotation plants which results in improvement of lead concentrate quality and prevents zinc loss. In mineral flotation industries, lignin sulfonates are known for their depressant properties for both non-metallic and sulfide minerals such as pyrite and pyrrhotite.This paper investigates the effect of lignin sulfonate on flotation of galena, sphalerite and pyrite in sulfidic lead and zinc bearing ores. Batch flotation tests were carried out on a high pre-activated zinc samples. The feed contains 0.9% lead, 2.3% zinc and 7.5% iron. The dosage of all reagents such as sodium cyanide, zinc sulfate, ethyl xanthate and methyl isobutyl carbinol (MIBC) were kept constant for lead flotation step except calcium lignin sulfonate (CLS) that was varied between 0 and 80 gr/ton.Results for lead rougher concentrate showed that the grade of lead increased by 2.7% while the recovery decreased around 4 % at the highest dosage of CLS. Furthermore, zinc recovery decreased by 6.3% with no significant change in grade. Iron recovery in lead rougher concentrate decreased by 2.3 % while the grade changed around 1%. In sphalerite flotation step, CLS dosage was changed in the range of 0 to 80 gr/ton while the dosage of other reagents such as copper sulfate, lime, amil xanthate and MIBC were kept constant. In this step, no decreasing in grade and recovery of zinc was observed, while iron recovery decreased. It was suggested that CLS has a depression effect on sphalerite in conjunction with other zinc depressants such as zinc sulfate and sodium cyanide. CLS was further used in plant with non-pre-activated zinc minerals. Similar trends were observed in plant.INTRODUCTIONlead-zinc sulfide minerals play an important role in the production of lead and zinc metals in the mineral processing industry (Luo, Feng et al. 2016). Due to complexity of the lead-zinc ores mineralogy, in some situations, their flotation properties vary significantly from one deposit to another one even in itself (Bulatovic 2007)."

"Dispersed and flocculated alumina (non-spherical particles) slurries were prepared by pH controlling with HCL Spray-drying of these resulted in dimpled granules with a smooth surface and high density, and spherical granules with rough surface and low-density, respectively. Detailed characterization on granules and their compacts includes: SEM observation, density measuring (mercury porosimetry and Archimedes's Principle) and liquid immersion optical microscopy. Compaction of these granules originated a larger particles rearrangement in the samples made with the spherical granules than with the dimpled granules. This was verified through the orientation of alumina particles, which was pronounced in the compact made with the former granules.IntroductionOn immersing a ceramic powder in water, the surface usually acquires a charge by interaction with ionic species in solution. The charge is affected by pH and the electrolyte concentration of the water. 1 The dispersion in a slurry is achieved through the interaction of charges on the particle surface with the media. In the ceramic processing, especially in the process of casting, the dispersion of slurry has been one of the most important topics studied for many years. Recently the attention is paid on its role in the pressing. The granule characteristics are governed by the dispersion state of slurry. Takahashi et al2 , Tsubaki et al3 and Walker et al4 showed that the granules from dispersed slurry were dimpled and of high density, while granules from flocculated slurry were spherical and of low density. This variation in the granules characteristics should have a marked effect on the structure of compact.This paper presents the influence of the dispersion state of alumina slurry on the granules characteristics and also on the internal structure of compacts. Different dispersion states were elaborated by adjusting pH of the slurry. In this method, the particles are dispersed or flocculated only by the effect of surface charging, and thus some secondary effect such as the steric hindrance from an electrolyte dispersant is avoided. The characteristics of granules and compacts are examined with SEM, density measurements by mercury porosimetry and by Archimedes's Principle and liquid immersion optical microscopy. This novel microscopy provides various important information on packing structure of particles, such as their orientation. 5"
