"Researchers from the National Institute for Safety and Health (NIOSH) installed instruments in the track entry and in the pillars of a northern West Virginia longwall coal mine between two planned panels for the purpose of monitoring the behavior of the ground. The instruments included four cable bolt load cells to measure the change in gateroad loading, six borehole pressure cells to measure the loading in the pillars, three six-channel roof extensometers to measure roof sag, four convergence measurements on the cribs to measure the crib loading, and a multipoint borehole extensometer to measure the pillar expansion. The instrumentation was all connected through two multiplexers to a single Campbell Scientific permissible datalogger located about 350 feet outby the instruments. The goal of the project was to record all of the measurements as both longwall faces passed the site of the instrumentation and to use the data to calibrate numerical models.This report describes the recording of all of the measurements taken as the first panel approached and then passed the instrumentation site. This study provided valuable data related to the ground response and support performance that will be used to improve safety in longwall gateroads.INTRODUCTIONA longwall mine in northern West Virginia was selected as a second study site for an ongoing research project into gateroad layout and support design. The area was affected by a transition from limestone to sandstone in the roof. The entries were 16 feet wide, and the height was approximately 80 inches. The layout for the longwall panels was 1,170 feet wide by 4,000 feet long. The panel configuration was right-handed, and a three-entry gateroad was used between panels. The pillars next to the headgate were 137.5 feet by 115 feet center-to-center, and the pillars next to the tailgate were 275 feet by 100 feet center-to-center, with the crosscuts at 60 degrees. The width of the gateroad was a total of 215 feet."

The study focuses on sulfide oxidation processes in unweathered pyrite-rich mine tailings from a soil-covered impoundment in northern Sweden. To simulate the oxygen-limited conditions in water saturated tailings two long-term column experiments were performed. Results are presented for the first 11 months of the experiments at room temperature. The tailings used in the experiments were of two different grain sizes (one coarse grained, in the range 0.02 - 0.6 mm with a grain surface area of 1.86 m2 g-1, and one fine-grained, in the range 0.0015 - 0.06 mm with a grain surface area of 10.00 m2 g-1) and with slightly different mineralogical composition. The S:Fe molar ratio in the leachates (1.0 - 1.5) indicates either that pyrrhotite is the main iron sulfide undergoing oxidation in our experiments, or, alternatively that the S:Fe molar ratio in the leachate is determined by pyrite weathering in conjunction with other processes releasing iron or immobilising sulfate. However, speciation modelling of the leachates indicates that ferrihydrite was close to saturation, suggesting that a ferric oxyhydroxide may have dissolved/ precipitated during the experimental period, thereby affecting the S:Fe molar ratio. Pyrite oxidation rates obtained from the two column experiments during æsteady-stateÆ were 2.25 + 10-13 and 8.45 + 10-14 mol m-2 s-1 in the coarse and fine tailings, respectively. Pyrrhotite oxidation rates, as an alternative, were 2.31 + 10-12 and 1.24 + 10-11 mol m-2 s-1 in the coarse and fine tailings, respectively. Natural microbial activity was confirmed in both the tailings and the leachates; therefore, the obtained oxidation rates are not strictly abiotic. It is thus concluded, based on the experimental results, that tailing heterogeneity will result in zones with different oxidation rates, related to their physical and chemical properties.

Experimental data are presented for hydrate formation conditions for gas mixtures of carbon dioxide and methane. Equilibrium constants for carbon dioxide, defined as the mole fraction of carbon dioxide in the gas phase (dry basis) divided by the mole fraction of carhon dioxitle in the hydrate (dry basis)... were calculated usine the equilibrium constants for methane developed in an earlier paper. INTRODUCTION A series of papers have been written on gas hydrates, giving temperatures and pressures at which hydrates would form.2. 3, 4. 5, 6. 9. 12, 13, 15 Vapor-solid equilibrium constants have been developed for methane, ethane, propane and iso-butane' by which it is possible to compute for a specific gas mixture the temperature and pressure at which hydrates will form. Carbon dioxide is present in many natural gases in concentrations usually from 0.1 to 2.0 per cent. It also forms a gas hydrate with water and presumably enters the solid solution when present with a natural gas which is forming a hydrate. The equilibrium constant giving the ratio of the concentration of carbon dioxide in the gas phase to the concentration in the solid phase is required for including the effect of the carbon dioxide when computing the conditions for hydrate formation. Direct determination of the concentration of carbon dioxide in solid hydrate requires a difficult separation to be made. Therefore, this research resorted to the measurement of the temperature and pressure at which specific mixtures of methane and carbon diox- ide would form hydrates. From the equilibrium constants previously mentioned for methane, it is possible to compute the equilibrium constant for carbon dioxide, without measurement of the composition of the solid phase. Fig. 1 shows the conditions at which methane and carbon dioxide form hydrates. The converting of lead matte is not a general practice at lead smelters, therefore a description of the methods used and developments made during the past 20 years in converting both lead and copper matte at the Tooele plant of the International Smelting Co. in Utah may be of interest. The Tooele converting plant consists of five electrically operated stands in which are used 96 by 150-in. horizontal, barrel-type converters each of about 10 tons capacity. The main converter building is served by a 60-ton electric traveling crane and the casting shed by a 30-ton crane. Copper matte is tapped from near-by reverberatory furnaces into launders that deliver into 8-ton ladles on the converter floor. Lead matte is brought from the blast furnaces, about li mile away, in 5-ton ladles mounted on trucks, hauled by electric locomotives. As the Tooele copper plant has never been a producer of much copper, and has been Irregular in its operation, the original converting plant with its small converters has been adcquate, although decidedly out of step with large, modern plants. Tonnage figures in this paper are for comparison with each other only, as they are not at all in line with prevailing tonnages at larger plants today. The reasons for the changes made in converting practice at Tooele, as well as the improvements in the results obtained as these changes were perfected, are given in the following pages. Lead-matte Converting, 1914 to 1927 In 1914, Oscar M. Kuchs wrote a paper for the Transactions,' describing in detail the lead-matte converting methods at Tooele up to that time. The method perfected only a few months before Mr. Kuchs' paper was written consisted, briefly, of blowing the lead matte alone, without the addition of siliceous fluxing ores, to a point where the lead and zinc were largely eliminated by volatilization. While coal was undoubtedly seen by the early travellers within the state, the first mention of it was in the late 1820's when hunters put some stones from a creek bed under the logs of a large camp fire, and awoke later to find the stones on fire. The stream was later named Coal Branch; the location was at the eastern side of the present Bibbs County.1 In the Louisville Daily Journal of Feb. 11, 1831, the following short editorial note appeared: "Tuscaloosa Coal.-A small quantity of this article has reached Mobile, and has been tried in the office of the Patriot; it is said to be an excellent article. We invite such of our friends as desire economy in fuel, love a cheerful and constant fire, or would eschew a smoky room, to call and examine." On a geological map published in 1832, the "Carboniferous group" is shown and a spot near Tuscaloosa indicated as showing bituminous coal,2 and this is again alluded to in Morton's Synopsis, 1834. A brief description of the coal fields in the state in 1834 said that in winter coal was brought down the. Black Warrior River to Mobile and sold there at the same price as Liverpool coal, $1.00 to $1.50 per barrel, ($10 to $15 per ton) and that the writer was using it in his laboratory.3 At that time it was in local use by smiths and an iron foundry was using it in Shelby County.4 In 1836 some coal was mined in the Birmingham district, chiefly in the northern portion of the Coosa basin, where it was loaded on barges and taken down the Coosa Rivers.5 "William Whitman dug coal out of Wolf Creek (Walker County) in 1837," and in the same county, in 1839, the first coal shaft in the state, was sunk. This was near the mouth of Lost Creek and was known as Frierson's Shaft. It was operated by a hand windlass, using two tubs.1

Georgius Agricola wrote in De Re Metallica in 1556 that a prudent a miner should not work in a region ruled by a tyrant-a person inimical to mining. In 1926, Associate Chief Sherman of the United States Forest Service in a speech stated, "It is the policy of the Forest Service to encourage the development of the mineral resources within the boundaries of the National Forests ... a man who fails to cultivate a friendly, helpful, cooperative spirit in his relations with those who are endeavoring to develop the mineral wealth of our mountains has no place in the Forest Service." Both statements are as true today as they were in 1556 and 1926. The challenge to the Forest Service and the mineral industry today is to maintain that cooperation in a world that has changed significantly since Agricola and Sherman. The United States Forest Service manages 77,000,000 hectares of land-mostly in the Western United States-an area equal in size to New South Wales. The vast majority-75 million hectares are National Forests, and 1.6 million hectares are National Grasslands. National Wilderness Areas account for 13 million hectares or rough- ly 17 per cent of the National Forest System. National Forest System lands (NFS) are some of the most visible, scenic and controversial lands in the country. They are also some of the most valuable for their mineral potential and production. The value of mineral produced exceeds US$4 billion per year. There are over 1200 producing mines, 15,000 oil and gas leases, and some of the largest lead, copper, silver, gold, platinum, molyb- denum, and coal deposits in the hemisphere. Every year the Forest Service approves nearly 5,000 mineral operations on the NFS. Much of the NFS (75 per cent) is open to location of mining claims pursuant to the 1872 Mining Law. And an equal amount of land is legally available for oil and gas leasing.

"The localization of orebodies by geological structures is well demonstrated at the Copper Mountain mine of southwestern British Columbia. These extensive deposits; owned and workd by the Granby Consolidated Mining; Smelting and Power Company; are at Princeton; abo!lt 150 miles east of Vancouver and 40 miles north of the International boundary. The geology of the deposits and the surrounding district is described by the present writer in Memoir 171 of the Geological Survey of Canada; pub1ished in 1934.The main geological feature is a gabbro stock, elliptical in plan, with a major axis about 5 miles in length extending in a northwest-southeast direction. The stock varies in composition from syeno-gabbro (gabbro plus orthoclase) through diorite and syenite to a core of syenite pegmatite. All the members contain orthoclase, which ·increases greatly in amount toward the centre, but all are devoid of quartz. The stock has been injected into a steeply folded series of volcanic flows, breccias, and tuffs that strike more or less parallel with the major axis of the stock. On its northeast side the stock is flanked by a band of fairly coarse volcanic breccia of andesitic composition and ·having fragments up to several inches in length. Where this breccia is tangential to the stock it is both dynamically and chemically metamorphosed to a marked degree, and within the zone of this metamorphism are enclosed the copper deposit~. The ore consists of bornite, chalcopyrite, and a little magnetite occurring as disseminated grains and small veinlets in the metamorphosed breccias. The only gangue minerals are orthoclase, albite, oligoclase, and biotite. The two most common vein minerals, quartz and pyrite, are conspicuously rare or absent. The dynamic metamorphism has produced two well-defined structures, namely, a strong schistosity parallel with the curved vertical contact of the stock and a very striking set of small, straight, nearly parallel open fractures that stand nearly vertical and at right angles to both the schistosity and the stock contact. These are called the ore fractures."

Carbon monoxide poisoning is one of the most widely distributed and most frequent causes of industrial accidents . Carbon monoxide gas is a product of incomplete combustion , and since it is without color , odor , or taste , its presence is frequently unsuspected in many places where it exists . It is an ever present danger about blast and coke furnaces , smelters , and foundries . It may be found in buildings having a leaky furnace or chimney , and in buildings where a gas stove is used without a proper flue connection , such as is often found in tenements , tailor shops , and boarding houses . Hospitals receive annually a great number of victims of poisoning , either by accident or in an attempt at suicide , from artificial illuminating gas . People may be affected by leaks wherever water gas is formed or used . The exhaust gases from gasoline motors under average running conditions usually contain 5 to 7 per cent carbon monoxide , and sometimes as much as 13 per cent ; deaths from running an automobile engine in a closed garage are not infrequent . A similar danger may arise in operating gasoline engines in launches without sufficient ventilation . The gas is formed also in stoker rooms , in gun turrets on battleships , in petroleum refineries , and by the Lablanc soda process in cement and brick plants . In underground mines carbon monoxide may appear as the result of shot firing , mine explosions , or mine fires , and in tunnels where automobiles , coal or oil - burning locomotives are operated . In spite of the common occurrence of carbon monoxide poisoning there appears to be no uniformly recognized treatment for a person overcome by carbon monoxide . In the rescue work of the United States Bureau of Mines , however , a method has been developed which has been supported by laboratory investigation , and has proved successful in practical experience , over a period of years . As outlined in this article , the method is useful in the hands of first -aid men as well as physicians .

THE greatest problem confronting business managers in modern times is not production, but distribution. It would be easy to expand productive output, but it is difficult to find markets for all that is produced. The fundamental source of economic difficulty, in the view of many observers, is a lack of proper balance between productive capacity and consumptive capacity. The studies conducted by the Brookings Institution on the general subject, "The Distribution of Income in Relation to Economic Progress", have led to conclusions of far-reaching significance, which may be summarized briefly as follows: (1) We have never lived beyond our economic means or capacity. (2) We have not been suffering from general overproduction. (3) We have not as yet reached a stage in our economic evolution at which it is possible to provide adequate standards of living for everybody. ( 4) It would require less than a 25 per cent increase in purchasing power among the masses to absorb our full productive capacity. (5) Production-curtailment programmes-whatever their merit in meeting temporary maladjustments-can only lead to national impoverishment. (6) Our inability to find markets adequate to absorb the full output of our productive establishments is explained by the unequal distribution of income and consequent restricted flow of purchasing power through consumptive channels. (7) The slow rate of growth of consumptive demand serves to retard the rate at which new capital is constructed, and hence the rate of economic progress. (8) The primary need is a rapidly expanding total income, and a broader diffusion of this income among the masses of the people. (9) A broader diffusion of income can best be achieved by reducing prices as rapidly as increasing efficiency will permit. That is to say, the benefits of technological progress, mass production, and low unit costs must be promptly passed on to consumers in the form of lower prices-giving more for each dollar.

"More than 6,300 people attended SME’s 2016 Annual Conference & Expo in Phoenix, AZ and many of them made the trip to the conference to take part in the excellent technical sessions that are presented on a yearly basis by the Society.Holding true to form, this year’s conference was full of options. In fact, this year there were 121 technical sessions and 751 presentations to chose from. The following is a sample of some of the technical sessions as seen through the eyes of the editors of Mining Engineering and SME technical papers.SME Sections Sharing Success: Changing thePublic Perception of MiningThis session was a workshop on how several local sections were effective in getting the message out to their communities and schools about the value of the extractive minerals industry. Several sections shared their outreach successes, including the Mining in Society merit badge activities by the Minnesota Section by Julie Lucas and SME’s participation in the World Scout Jamboree in Japan by Frank McAllister.Dan Alexander highlighted activities by the Pittsburgh Section, such as preparing minerals kits and pamphlets for elementary school classes and regional science fairs. The West Virginia University Student Chapter used the kits as handouts at their local gem and mineral show. School speakers in full mining gear were especially interesting to the young children.Other speakers were Michael Linn, Paradise Valley Unified School District — Business and School Partnerships; and Greg Kruse, Central Wyoming Section of SME — What makes a successful section?Engineering Competency ModelAmerican Association of Engineering Societies and the U.S. Department of Labor, with a grant from the United Engineering Foundation, developed a guide to the set of skills necessary for success in the engineering community -- Knowledge – Skills – Abilities — needed for all disciplines.Various engineering societies are now writing the Tier 5 occupation-specific requirements. The Competency Committee is charged to write concise and discipline-specific mining engineering, mineral processing engineering, geological engineering, and geophysical engineering by Sept. 30, 2017."

WE found it necessary, in December, 1874, to repair the upper part of the lining in No. 5 furnace at Glendon, and, as we succeeded in doing it with comparatively little trouble, a description of the plan followed may be of service to those having a similar operation to perform. On two opposite sides, as shown by the sketch, the lining was completely gone for a height of about four feet, below which it increased gradually in thickness, being nine inches thick about three feet lower down. On a plane at right angles to the section drawn, the brick were nowhere entirely gone, but were in some places not more than two or three inches thick, being still sufficient to sustain the upper part, where the brick, being above the level of the stock, were not at all worn. The furnace was blown down, so that when we cast and closed the tuyeres, about 7 A.M., on December 8th, the top of the stock was about twenty-four feet below the filling-plates. The walls were quite hot, and a good deal of gas was given off for several hours after the tuyeres were closed. The hopper and bell were thrown into the furnace, and were covered by filling several charges of cold stock over them, which at once greatly cooled off the top of the furnace. A wrought-iron pipe, thirty inches in diameter, in five sections, each six feet long, was then put down, and made to stand upright, as nearly as possible in the centre of the furnace. Around this we filled a double charge of coal, taking care to heap it up next the pipe, and let it get thinner as it got to the walls. This was covered with about two feet of fine ore, leaving the lowest joint in the pipe entirely uncovered. We were now ready to put in our scaffold to get at the

These unique copper-deposits occur on the top of the Kaibab Plateau, in Cocouino county, Arizona, and extend from the northern edge of the Grand Cañon of the Colorado river to near the Utah State line. The best-developed deposits are near Jacobs Lake, 30 miles south of the Utah line, where they are 16 ft. thick, of unknown width, and are more or less continuous for 5 miles. From Jacobs Lake to the edge of the Grand Cañon, a distance of 40 miles, outcrops of ore have been found, but no explorations have been made except those of wandering cowboys and hunters. The Kaibab Plateau, the highest of the Colorado river plateaus, is a great uplift, about 90 miles long from north to south, and from 10 to 20 miles wide from east to west. Its southern face is the Grand Cañon; its western boundary a N—S. fault plane, which separates it from the Eanab Plateau, lying 1,500 ft. below. Its eastern edge is a monocline which brings the horizontal beds of the high plateau to the level of the plateaucountry of eastern Utah. The elevation of the plateau near the Colorado river is over 8,000 ft., and about 6,000 ft. at the Utah line. Its structure, as shown by the western fault, consists of about 500 ft. of Aubrey limestones underlain by 1,000 ft. of red sandstones. The limestone is the upper member of the Carboniferous, and is overlaid by the marls and shales of the Permian, 25 miles to the north on the Kanab Plateau. At the town of Kanab, near the Utah line, the Permian strata pass under the magnificent redsandstone cliffs of the Triassic, that rise to heights of 1,000 ft. above the desert. The Grand Cañon exposes a section a mile deep at the southern end of the plateau, showing all the formations from the Archean to the top of the Carboniferous.

"This paper presents the results of pilot scale column flotation applications in the two different copper concentrators in Turkey. The Kure Copper Plant is located in the Black Sea Region of Turkey. There are four types of copper ore formations in the Küre region. The so called disseminated ore contains 60-70% siliceous minerals of which Cu content is around 0.5%. The remaining three ore types in the region are generally named “massive ores”. The massive ores may assay up to 15% Cu and the major gangue mineral is pyrite associated with relatively little amount of silica. The main copper mineral in all formations is chalcopyrite that is generally finely disseminated in pyrite therefore satisfactory liberation requires ultrafine grinding especially in the case of the massive ores.A blend of these ores, containing 1.7% Cu on average, is fed to the Küre Copper Concentrator whose capacity is 1.2 million tons of ore annually. Unfortunately, today the plant operates below its designed capacity treating around 550,000 tons of ore per year. The design of Küre Copper Plant was undertaken by the Outokumpu Company of Finland. The operation of the plant is almost automatically controlled and the feed, the concentrate and the tailings are assayed for copper by on-line XRF analysers. The particle size analysers are also connected to the grinding circuit. The feed material is ground almost below 50 µm and the flotation is conducted around pH 11.2 using Hostaflot X-231 (a trade mark of Hoechst) as the collector. Apart from the rougher cells, there are four cleaning stages after which the final concentrate is produced. A very fine grinding requirement for an adequate level of liberation makes successful flotation difficult and consequently the final concentrate can hardly assay above 16% Cu leading to copper losses around 20% in the tailings that contains 0.3% copper."

"Bubble-mineral complexes could be formatted by an attaching of hydrophobic particles to the surface of air bubbles or by an evolution of bubbles from solution onto hydrophobic surfaces. Measurements of contact angles, detachment forces (DF), induction times (IT), evolution pressures (EP) and flotation recoveries (FR) for the studying of minerals wettability at various pH and electrochemical potentials were used. An analysis of the obtained IT results show that a process of bubble attachment to a mineral surface is a rather slow one and it will scarcely be enough for bubble-mineral complex formation under the conditions of real flotation.The ranges of adhesion potentials obtained by DF measurements, Figure 1, correlate with the data of floatability-potential for pyrite. The ranges of adhesion potentials obtained by DF measurements for galena (-1 ÷0.2V) and chalcocite (-0.5÷1.2V) correlate with the potential ranges of floatability for galena (<0.2V) and chalcocite (>-0.4V). An increase of the DF and the cathodic limit of the adhesion potential with increasing length of the hydrocarbon chain were observed. EP-pH curves for sulfides are a mirror-like to the DF-pH curves, Figure 2. Structure of solid-liquid and liquid-gas borders has a determinative importance for formation of bubble-mineral complexes and subsequently flotation results. Under vacuum on the mineral surface there are produced micro bubbles and preferably they will be appeared on the hydrophobic sites. Water structure breaks near a hydrophobic surface facilitate water mass destruction and formation of gaseous phase embryos under decompression in the impeller zone. It simultaneously reduces a probability of produced micro bubbles dissolution as a result of pressure increasing owing to constant fluctuation of liquid densities into impeller zone. Comparison of Taggart’s evaluation of the suction behind blades of the impeller of an agitation-froth machine and ABEP data on galena, Figure, shows that gas evolution will be observed in the range of 1300-2700 revolutions of impeller per minute for hydrophobic and hydrophilic surfaces successively."

The melting of cathode copper, ususally containing 95.98+ per cent. • Cu, would appear to be a simple matter. Owing to the well known affinity of copper for sulfur, however, so much sulfur is absorbed by the copper during the operation that a long and expensive refining process is required to remove it, and the final product is inferior in purity and lower in electrical conductivity than the original cathode copper. The furnace operation, as now conducted, includes the following stages: 1. Charging the cathodes into the furnace. 2. Melting the cathodes. 3. Oxidizing period—saturating the copper with cuprous sub-oxide and bringing the metal to the condition known as "set copper;&apos;&apos; this is now done by blowing air into the molten bath of metal. 4. Reduction period, otherwise known as "poling," whereby the oxygen previously added is removed by covering the molten bath completely with coke or charcoal and introducing large poles of green wood; this reduces the cuprous sub-oxide, bringing the copper to the "tough pitch" stage ready for casting. 5. Casting Period. Many experiments have been made to obviate the long periods of oxidation and subsequent reduction, with no success. While the copper first cast will be good, as indicated by the set surface of the bars, it is impossible to hold it to the "tough pitch" condition, and long before the whole charge has been poured the copper will become "overpoled," entailing numerous difficulties. Sulfur has always been blamed by the furnace men as the reason why this refining process is necessary, yet the literature on the subject does not sufficiently emphasize how small a proportion of sulfur will ruin copper for practical purposes. The sulfur absorbed by copper during the melting period comes from two sources: (1) the sulfate left on the cathode sheets in the tank houses; (2) the fuel. Each of the three refining furnaces in use at Great Falls is provided with a waste-heat boiler. The general arrangement of furnace and boiler is as shown in Fig. 1. Two of the furnaces have hearths 45 ft. 7 in. by 14 ft. 6 in.; the third has a hearth 46 ft. 101/2 in. long and of the same width as the other two. The furnaces at present are equipped for firing with natural gas. As originally constructed two of the furnaces had hearths 36 by 14 ft., and were designed to use coal on grates, but these furnaces were lengthened and fired successively with pulverized coal and oil. The third furnace was added in 1926 and was oil-fired until 1928. Since that year natural gas has been in use on all of the furnaces. The changes that have occurred in connection with furnace design and the comparative performance of the furnaces with various fuels were described1 by the author in 1932. Two of the furnaces are provided with Stirling class A-30 boiler. rated at 400 hp. and having 4008 sq. ft. of heating surface. The thir furnace has a class A-21 Stirling waste-heat boiler rated at 300 hp. with 2805 sq. ft. of heating surface. The boilers are not baffled. The waste-heat boilers are placed on a platform 17 ft. 3 in. above the level of the furnace charge floor. The waste gases from the furnace pass by a vertical uptake flue, 4 by 3 ft. inside at the point where it enters the chamber, to a brick chamber from which the gases pass over a bridge wall and into the boiler setting. The uptake flue and chamber are constructed of silica brick. Each furnace has a steel stack 125 ft. high, measured from the boiler floor. The stacks have a 41/2-in. firebrick lining and are 5 ft. in diameter

The constantly increasing consumption of Portland cement in the State makes the above subject of particular interest at this time. The increasing demand is due to the rapid settling of the country and the fact that new uses are being found frequently for the above named commercial article. The industry is one that is bound to grow as the population increases, and this being the case it may be well at this time to consider briefly the matter of the chemical and physical composition of proper raw materials. A cement mixture is one that contains approximately 75 per cent, carbonate of lime, 15 per cent. silica, and 5 to 7 per cent. alumina and iron oxides; the other elements being magnesium carbonate and mall quantities of the rarer elements generally associated with limestone deposits. It can be readily seen from the above composition that it is possible to build up this mixture from a number of different materials. First.—A rock high in carbonate of lime can be mixed with clay or shale in such proportions as to bring about the desired composition ; the chief difficulty in the building up of such a mixture is that it is hard to find a clay or shale in which the silica-alumina ratio lies between 4 to 1 and 3 to 1 and at the same time shows physical characteristics which will make certain its adaptability to the practical manufacture of Portland cement. Very often clays or shales are found which are right chemically but contain large quantities of grit or free silica. Such clays or shale must be ground to extreme fineness in the mixture in order to make the silica and alumina combine with the lime when the mixture is burned. On the other hand, clays or hales are often found that have the proper physical characteristics but in which the amount of alumina is too great. Synergists can be used in solvent extraction to improve the selectivity of extractants for metals. Research work carried out by the SX group at the AJ Parker Cooperative Research Centre for Hydrometallurgy / CSIRO Minerals has shown that the pH isotherm of nickel with Versatic 10 was significantly lowered by the addition of the synergist Acorga CLX50. The paper discusses how this synergistic shift can be used to alleviate a gypsum formation problem at Bulong nickel laterite operation in Western Australia. Metal pH isotherms were obtained with Versatic 10 and synergist CLX50 using synthetic leach solutions. In terms of pH50, the extraction order of the metals with 0.5 M Versatic 10 alone was Cu > Zn > Ni > Co > Mn > Ca > Mg, whilst the extraction order with Versatic 10 and 20% by volume CLX50 was Cu > Ni Zn > Co > Mn > Ca > Mg with the pH50 (Mn-Co) significantlyincreased. This is significant because the isotherms of valuable metals Ni, Cu, Co and Zn shift more towards low pH than those of the waste metals Mn, Mg and Ca, resulting in a possible good separation of Ni, Cu, Co and Zn from Mn, Mg and Ca. The use of intermediate precipitation, solids/liquid separation and re-leach in the three Western Australian nickel plants make these processes complicated and costly in capital and operation. The research work carried by the SX groupat the AJ Parker Centre has led to the development of direct SX (DSX) processes to recover nickel and cobalt from leach solutions using synergistic organic systems. Semi-continuous tests with a BHP Billiton pilot plant leach solution showed that Ni and Co together with Zn and Cu were separated from the major impurities, Mn, Mg, Ca, and Cl, in the first SX circuit. The co-extracted impurities were easily scrubbed. After stripping, Ni and Co together with Zn and Cu were concentrated, resulting in a much smaller second SX circuit in the down stream processes.

T RACES of sulfur have a marked influence on the physical and mechanical properties of many iron-base alloys. The commonly used combustion method for the determination of sulfur content is not accurate enough at the 50 ppm level by weight and below to be useful in determining the influence of sulfur. Kriege and Wolfe&apos; have described a method for the determination of sulfur in iron alloys in which the sulfur is evolved as hydrogen sulfide followed by reaction with N, N-dimethyl-p-phenylenediamine, and iron (111) to form methylene blue which is measured spectrophoto-metrically. This method of determining sulfur has been used to study the activity of sulfur in Fe-Si-S alloys,&apos; but has not been previously applied to the determination of sulfur in Fe-Ni alloys because of the insolubility of nickel in dilute hydrochloric acid. Dissolution of nickel in dilute hydrochloric acid, however, can be greatly accelerated by the addition of a small amount of platinic chloride.3 By combining these two techniques in a procedure in which 0.005 pct platinic chloride in 1:l hydrochloric acid is used as the dissolving fect on the strength of the material. However, ductility is influenced by the presence of discontinuous precipitation. In Fig. 5, percent elongation data at room temperature and 1400°F is shown for two sets of specimens of Waspalloy which were solution heat treated at 1950°F and either quenched or slow cooled to the aging temperature and then aged for 100 hr at 1292" and 1598ºF, respectively. At room temperature the existence of a discontinuous precipitation cell at grain boundaries (see data point marked by arrow) has no apparent effect on ductility. However, at elevated temperatures a pronounced lowering of ductility occurs when discontinuous precipitation has occurred in the specimen. It would appear that the morphology of discontinuous precipitation "cells" at grain boundaries would be highly conducive to the initiation of cracks which in turn lead to premature "grain boundary" failure.
