The principal interest in the oil situation in Colombia during the year centered around the enactment of the new petroleum law and the applications for concessions subsequently made by various interests. The year was a comparatively uneventful one from the standpoint of actual operations of drilling and development. There was a falling off both in exploratory work and in the development of producing properties; and as a result of curtailment of production, the output of oil from the country dropped to the lowest level since the completion of the looping of the Andian pipe line to the coast in 1927. Legislation Law No. 371 of 1931, with its Regulatory Decree No. 1270, was enacted during the year and marked Colombia's attempt to encourage more extensive exploration and development of the prospective oil resources of the country. Some of the outstanding provisions of the law are as follows: Tracts may be acquired by a concessionnaire directly and by transfer ranging from 5,000 to 100,000 hectares, except in certain reserved territories east of the summit of the eastern cordilleras where the maximum is increased to 200,000 ha. A security deposit of $1 per hectare, minimum $25,000, is required on government grants, and is returned to the concessionnaire only upon the fulfillment of stipulated terms of the law. Rentals, increasing progressively from 10c per hectare per year the first two years to 50c per hectare the sixth year, are required up to the start of the production period (beginning of development). The concession terminates 30 years after the beginning of the production period and can be extended for 10 years more at the option of the contractor. Wells must be produced at no less than 25 per cent of their maximum capacity. Royalties on oil from national lands vary from 2 to 11 per cent of the gross product, depending on the distance of the concession from the port of loading. In view of the many large differences in structure and physical properties between metals, plastics, and most rock materials, a continuing experimental petrodynamics program has been established at the U. S. Naval Ordnance Test Station. Part of this program has been to test the concepts of scabbing and corner fracturing in a typical coarse-grained rock. The results of this experimental program have shown very interesting differences between the formation of fractures in rock and the formation of fractures in other materials such as metals and plastics which are often used as models for rock behavior studies. The gross behavior of coarse-grained brittle solids subjected to impulsive loading has undergone abundant empirical investigation by mining organizations and by mineral research agencies. However, the fundamental response of coarse-grained brittle solids to impulsive loading has received little detailed study in recent years. The various organizations and agencies interested in rock-like brittle materials have broadly applied the stress wave interaction concepts of the impulsive failure of metallic samples to the behavior of granular brittle materials 1,2,3,4,5,6 Using the metallic sample approach for stress wave induced fracturing, an understanding of the fracture behavior of brittle materials which perhaps is not always appropriate has been established in the open literature. An excellent summary of the metallic sample approach is provided by ref. 7 which summarizes the general beliefs prevalent at present regarding the impulsive behavior of brittle solids: "In the blasting process, rock breakage occurs primarily from tensile slabbing, beginning at a free face and proceeding back toward the explosive charge. The tensile waves formed by the reflection of incident compressive waves from two or more free faces will collide in the rock, resulting in large localized tensile stresses. Fractures formed by the interaction of these tensile stresses begin at the apex of the free face planes and progress back into the rock as shown...."

The mines of southeast Missouri's Lead Belt have been in operation since 1864, almost 100 years. During this period about 10 pct of the total ore available has been left in place as pillars, and this now represents the best ore reserve left to the older mines. St. Joseph Lead Co. has been investigating various plans of pillar recovery for several years. The example to be described is only one possible approach under a specific set of conditions. Conditions vary greatly in the different areas within the Lead Belt, and the same approach would be entirely inadequate in certain other areas, but there are important sections where this system is clearly applicable. Horizon mining is practiced in the Lead Belt, and stopes may vary from 10 ft to well over 100 ft high. Fig. 1 is a plan view of 6100 stope, the area to be discussed. For these mines this is a small stope, only 10 to 12 ft high. Before any plans were drawn up for pillar recovery, three independent estimates of the pillar grades were made by the mine superintendent, the mine captain, and the mine geologist. After these results were averaged, pillars indicated to be of economic grade were marked for removal as shown. At this stage several alternatives were considered: 1) retreat with caving, 2) concrete replacement pillars, and 3) systematic bolting and retreat. A retreating system with caving was not chosen because the roof was known to be too bad even to permit loading a blasted pillar before caving would begin. Concrete replacement pillars would have been too costly and would have required a large crew, bulky materials, and unwieldy equipment. Systematic bolting was chosen as being most acceptable for the following reasons: 1) Limited area and spans were involved. 2) Only minor modifications to the jumbo would be required for bolting. 3) Only a two-man bolting crew would be needed. 4) Only compact bolting materials would be required. 5) The bolting plan could be modified to allow

The oxidation rates of tantalum in various partial pressures of carbon dioxide in the temperature range 700°to 950°C were measured with a thermo-gravimetric balance. Oxidation involved a surface -controlled reaction associated with the formation of a nonprotective layer of Ta2O5. Below about 720°C, there was a change in the rate-determining mechanism, and above 830°C the linear rate was preceded by a complex region of nonlinear oxidation behavior. The linear oxidation of tantalum has been explained quantitatively in terms of carbon dioxide adsorption, followed by a rate-controlling surface reaction. The initial adsorption has been expressed both as an equilibrium process and as a steady-state reaction. The enthalpy for chemisorption of CO, was determined to be -17.3 kcal per mole. The surface-controlled reaction had an activation enthalpy of 40.4 kcal per mole. A considerable amount of interest has been shown in recent years in the oxidation of tantalum and the nature of the oxide film produced. This interest is associated with the increasing demand in our technology for structural materials to withstand high temperatures and corrosive atmospheres. The low oxidation resistance of tantalum has severely restricted its application as a high-strength, high-temperature material. As a fundamental approach to the realization of the full poten- tials of this metal, the kinetics of the oxidation of tantalum in oxygen and air have been extensively studied; however, very little work has been reported on the effect of other gases, including carbon dioxide. According to Miller,' the only reported study of the reaction between tantalum and dry carbon dioxide is a restricted observation by O'Driscoll et al.2 at 8 atm absolute pressure and 500°C. Therefore, this study was made to investigate the reaction of tantalum with carbon dioxide. EXPERIMENTAL MATERIALS AND METHODS The vacuum-annealed tantalum used in this study was obtained from Fansteel Metallurgical Corp. as 0.025-mm-thick sheet stock. The presence of gas in coal mines necessitates the use of costly ventilation arrangements and the use of expensive mining methods. On the other hand, the gas itself in many instances is of considerable intrinsic value, and its separate recovery might conceivably be a profitable undertaking. This paper is concerned with a study of the movement of gas in coal strata with the object of determining the laws governing gas movement and thus making at least a preliminary step toward the solution of the more practical problem of its control or recovery. Naturally, so important a subject has received much attention from scientists and engineers. In most cases, however, the studies have been concerned with the origin1$, the amount" the composition3 and the method of retention4 of the gas in coal; or, from the more practical side, have been concerned with the phenonlena and conditions associated with outbursts5 or explosions and their control. Numerous studies also have been made of the permeability of coal to gas" of gas pressures measured in coal seams, etc. The authors are unaware, however, of any attempt to present a consistent or complete picture of the laws governing the movement of gas through the coal. Study in West Virginia A recent study conducted at this University7 gives the first presentation of the distribution of pressures in a small section of a coal seam. Holes were drilled into the coal rib to various depths and at various distances from the coal face. The location selected for study was as remote as possible from disturbing influences of mining operations, faults, "wants," etc. The pipes extending into the coal that were used to determine pressures were grouted into the borehole for the entire depth of the hole, and great precaution was taken to insure accurate pressure readings. Principally, mining natural resources is a finite business that reaches its limits once the deposits mined are depleted, the resources can no longer be mined in an economically profitable way or substitutes are pushing the mined products out of the market. An example of the latter is the increasing replacement of coal with natural gas and renewables in power generation in the United States [1]. According to the model of the product lifecycle, the global hard-coal mining industry has reached a stagnation phase [2]. The trend is obvious. Coal use peaked in 2013 [3], and the coal demand of China has been slowly decreasing since then [4]. Coal consumption in the United States saw a 16 percent decline from 726 Mt (800 million st) to 608 Mt (670 million st) between 2015 and 2019. In addition, according to the U.S. Energy Information Administration, it will not rise again [5]. The decline is attributed to complex market dynamics, from low gas prices because of the “shale gas revolution” [6] to federal environmental regulations like the Clean Power Plan. Moreover, important players like the United Nations and the European Union have already begun to describe pathways toward decarbonization. Increasing competition between coal-mining companies and the mining regions can be expected worldwide if companies want to keep their positions on the global and national coal markets. Companies will focus on the best deposits. European countries, like France, Spain or Germany, are only forerunners of this development — their centuries of coal production have passed. The concept of sustainable development (SD) is fundamentally based on a model of progress in which ecological, economic and social dimensions should be developed equally and positively. Questions arise, such as: How can SD be a corporate goal in a phase of decline? How can former mining regions sustainably progress to a better future? The steps Germany has taken to handle the coal decline in a sustainable way and the lessons learned from this process are described in this paper.

"The Otjikoto mining and milling complex is 90% owned by B2Gold Corporation, and began commercial operation on February 28, 2015. The milling circuit operates at a throughput 3.3 million tonnes per annum, with an average reserve gold grade of 1.28 g/t. The ore is high in Gravity Recoverable Gold (GRG), which varies between 73-91%, depending on ore type. Overall gold recovery since start-up is 98.2%, with about 63.5 % coming from the gravity circuit as doré. 2016 cash operating costs, and all in sustaining cost (“AISC”) were $361 and $604 per ounce, respectively.During design, three ore types were tested for GRG content, and based on the high GRG value of all three ore types, the decision was made to treat the full ball mill circulating load by gravity. Once operating, the gravity circuit performance was characterized by performing a detailed gravity audit, which included the ore, cyclone classification, Knelson concentrators, and the Consep Acacia intensive leach system. The deeper ores contain significant pyrrhotite, and this created some unusual challenges that had to be overcome. This paper presents the gravity circuit design process, the circuit commissioning, and the audit results and ongoing improvements.IntroductionHeadquartered in Vancouver, Canada, B2Gold Corp. was founded in 2007. Currently, B2Gold has five operating mines, and numerous exploration projects in various countries, including Nicaragua, the Philippines, Namibia, Mali and Burkina Faso. The Otjikoto Mine is located in the north-central part of the Republic of Namibia. It is situated approximately 300 kilometers north of Windhoek, the country’s capital, within the Province of Otjozondjupa. The Otjikoto mining and milling complex is 90% owned by B2Gold Corporation, and began commercial operation on February 28, 2015. The milling circuit operates at a throughput 3.3 million tonnes per annum. During design, a large emphasis was placed on gravity recovery, as the Otjikoto ores are unusually high in Gravity Recoverable Gold (GRG)."

The Pongkor Gold Mine employs 678 staff. The mine is owned by the Indonesian state company PT Antam Tbk and is located 100 kilometres south west of Jakarta, in Java, Indonesia. Mine and infrastructure development started in 1992 following intensive geological exploration over 15 years. First gold production was in June 1994. The mine comprises three main orebodies: Ciguha, which is nearly mined out, dips at 75¦ from surface to 150 m. Kubang Cicau, dipping at 80¦ from surface to 230 m, and averages 3.5 metres thick at a grade of 10 g/t Au and 128 g/t Ag; and Ciurug, dipping at 60¦ from surface to 300 m and averages eight metres thick at a grade of 14 g/t Au and 172 g/t Ag. Present global ore reserves are 4.6 million tons at a grade of 12.3 g/t Au and 133.6 g/t Ag. Exploration is continuing for new veins. Initial mining was by manual cut and hydraulic fill at Ciguha, followed by Kubang Cicau. In 1996, it was proposed to convert Ciurug to a mechanised cut and fill operation. Two single boom jumbos and three load-haul-dumps (LHDs) were purchased with the assistance of a gold loan from NM Rothschild and Sons. Implementation of this upgrade was delayed by both a national economic crisis and an invasion of the concession by illegal miners. It was not until May 1999 that raise bore vent rises and access drift infrastructure commenced. Major underground development started in 2000 and is continuing. Production cut and waste fill stoping started in July 2001. The change from manual to mechanised methods has required a total change in work practices and attitudes. However, the process has resulted in a production increase from 600 tpd to 1200 tpd. A three-month compliance test (a condition of the financing loan) was successfully completed, from July to September 2001, with an average production of 700 tpd at Ciurug and 500 tpd from Kubang Cicau.

Exploration for an ore deposit commences with an outline of the regional ore controlling environment and is followed by the application of tools to focus the target area. One of the most essential focusing is the mapping of the mineral assemblages within the area of the ore. Key elements of mineralizing fluids, either epigenetic or syngenetic, enter into mineral assemblages that extend far beyond ore deposits. Portions of these assemblages may consist of new matrix minerals or alteration of previously existing minerals. Today, ore deposits are divided into genetic classes and each class is d8fined by a specific geological environment. Ore deposits within a given class are associated with a mineralogy, that is characteristic of the ore deposit class. So faithful is the mineral assemblage surrounding, or within an ore deposit, that recognition of the assemblage may be sufficient to define the class. Porphyry copper deposits have long been noted for their halos of alter-ation minerals. The outermost ring of chlorite, epidote and calcite extend thousands of feet away from the main ore zone. The mineral associated with porphyry copper deposits have been well documented by our distinguished speaker Paul Kerr, at Santa Rita (1), and Silver Bell' (2), and by excellent papers from S. C. Creasey, 1959 (3), Sales, 1948 (4), T. S. Lovering, 1949 (5), our Co-Chairman John Guilbert, 1970 (6), and many others. Several recent porphyry copper mines have been discovered in recent years by utilizing the mineral assemblage model described by Lowell and Guilbert, 1970 (6). Dave Lowell applied his own model of mineral halos for the discovery of Kalamazoo at San Manuel (7), Arizona, and Casa Grande West, Arizona. The purpose of this paper is to outline the application of mineralogy for discoveries of deposits other than porphyry copper mines and in particular, to ore discoveries in which mineralogy has played a key roll.

"The installation of foundation elements (large-diameter Bored Piles or Diaphragm Walls) for the execution of underground works to be performed through the ""Top Down"" Technique (Stations, Car Parks, Subways, Artificial Tunnels) often requires the insertion, with pinpoint accuracy, of steel or prefabricated elements within the foundation system, to provide temporary and/or permanent support to the whole structure.The future high-speed railway station of Florence Belfiore (Italy) is a perfect example; the new station will be built in the Northwest area of Florence, about two kilometers far from the existing station of Santa Maria Novella. The project envisages installation of about 500 bored piles (1200-1500-2100 mm diameter), with lengths ranging between 50 and 70 m. In the upper inner part of 250 piles, a steel pipe (weight: 15-20 tons, length: 22-25 mt.) has to be inserted with pinpoint accuracy.The “TREVI-CALATORE” system allows to install the plunge columns and adjust their position and verticality.INTRODUCTIONThe execution of underground works via the ""Top Down"" technique, train or tube underground stations, parking shafts, tunnels, often implies the need to carefully insert steel or prefabricated structures, serving as provisional/definitive pillars, into the foundation elements.The future high-speed railway station of Florence Belfiore is a perfect example; the new station will be built in the Northwest area of Florence, located about two kilometers far from the existing station of Santa Maria Novella.The new Belfiore Station is part of the new European high-speed railway network. The works related to Florence urban penetration include (figure 1):•,a 6.5 km. twin tunnel excavated via TBM/EPB, that will run beneath Florence in a north-east direction,•,passing under more than 150 buildings, many of which can be considered historic buildings, with a soil•,coverage ranging from 6 m to 20 m;•,a North portal in Rifredi area, Firenze Castello Station;•,a South portal near Campo di Marte Station (which is also the launch shaft of the TBM)•,the new Underground Station in Belfiore area."

"Electrochemical studies were performed to silver recovery from industrial wastes (radiographic films) on litanium flat electrode using a filter press-type electrochemical reactor with vertical orientation (known as REOV-01), as counter electrode was used a mesh-type DSA. Voltammetric studies were employed to fmd the current range under which silver reduction occurs. Using chronopotentiometric studies with controlled current, homogeneous deposits were obtained on the surface of the Ti electrode, to a current of -210 mA during 120 minutes to a constant linear flow velocity of 15 Lmin-1 was achieved 97% of silver recovery from industrial wastes. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy studies corroborated the presence of silver on Ti flat electrode. In addition, the silver concentration in the solution after the experiments was 1 ppm below environmental requirements. This indicates the viability of a filter press-type electrochemical reactor with vertical orientation (REOV-01) for silver recovery from radiographic filmsIntroductionIn recent years, the industrial sector has shown an increase in the use of silver due to new applications in different areas. In sectors such as photography, the consumption of silver has declined as a result of the boom in digital photography. However, the use of silver in radiographic applications has not shown greater variation (47.16 Moz), as the image quality is essential for diagnosis in various fields, such as medicine. All the silver used in photographic applications is discarded completely (solid or in effluent). At the present, several countries have been involved in silver recovering from industrial wastes due to the economic value and environmental impact they represent. The main source of silver recovery is the wastes generated by the photographic sector. Various technologies have attempted to recover silver contained in these wastes. However, they have not fully satisfied the requirements of maximum recovery, nor environmental level (less than 5 ppm) of silver in effluents [1,2]."

"The results of CFD modelling of complex heat transfer and fluid flow in DC electric arc furnace are presented. The model includes energy and momentum conservation equations for gas phase (freeboard), liquid phase (molten bath) and solid phase (walls and graphite electrode). Simulation revealed the temperature distribution in all elements of the furnace. The influence of the arc and melt resistance on the temperature distribution is discussed.Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) becomes a powerful tool for better understanding of the heta and mass transfer processes in industrial equipment. In current work commercial CFD software STAR-CD was used to analyse complex heat transfer in DC EAF, including forced and natural convection, conduction and radiation. The finite volume solver using body-fitted grid was used. The grids are non-staggered hexahedral grids and all variables are evaluated at cell centers. Steady-state calculations were performed with PISO algorithm. For the convective terms in equations the hybrid differencing scheme was used. An upwind differencing scheme was used for other terms. Conjugative heat transfer was taken into account in heat transfer calculations on gas-liquid and gas-solid interfaces. Radiation from the arc and inner surfaces of the furnace was calculated by a “discrete beam” approach. Source term in energy conservation equation was used to represent heat release in the zone occupied by the DC electric arc. The volume of this zone was calculated from semi-empirical equations. The Joule heat and heat due to chemical reaction in the melt were calculated through the source term expression in the energy balance equations for the slag and metal in the molten bath. The gas acceleration in the electric arc zone and stirring of the slag due to gas bubbles motion were accounted for by momentum source terms in the momentum conservation equations.All simulations were carried out using axisymmetric two-dimensional grid. The grid resolution was 20 cm per cell in most part of the furnace, except the arc region, where resolution was 5 mm per cell."

"The research study has been devoted to point out the better way to process a colemanite concentrate characterised by a high content of two kind of As sulphides (realgar and orpiment) finely disseminated in the matrix of the boron mineral.Scanning Electron Microscopy analyses have been carried out to determine all the mineralogical constituents and to evaluate their distribution, frequency and mutual relationships.There is a not neglectable part of realgar highly disseminated into the colemanite crystals.The orpiment recurs in small acicular crystals of 20÷30 µm in length and 5 µm in width, very difficult to liberate from the colemanite mineral particles.The colemanite concentrate, in fact, has been addressed to a chemical plant which products were boric acid and gypsum, the contaminated by As. It was unacceptable for further applications and very dangerous if rejected in the environment.Grinding tests under dry and wet conditions have been carried out in order to evaluate the liberation modality of the As sulphide minerals from the colemanite.Some difficulties have been overtaken in order to obtain a selective liberation of the As sulphides from the colemanite even if a certain decreasing in As grade in the higher size classes has been registered.All the comminution products have been analysed by SEM monitoring the liberation degree of the mineralogical constituents.Flotation tests have been carried out after different comminution flow sheet adopting different modulating conditions in order to evaluate the influence of the following parameters:• collector concentration versus contaminants concentration (As minerals) in the froths;• kind and quantity of the frothing agent to maximise the mineral recovery in the froths;• kind and quantity of the modulating agents to maximise the selectivity of the process;• conditioning modalities in order to obtain a suitable dispersion of fines and to avoid segregation of Asbearingparticles together with colemanite ones;• solid/liquid ratio of the pulp to minimise the water flow into the plant."

IN the calculation of oil and gas reserves by volumetric methods, it is necessary to know the volume of the reservoir available for the storage of the oil or gas. To obtain this information, a number of methods for determining both total and effective porosity of reservoir rocks are used. For the determination of the total porosity, or the porosity that considers all of the pore spaces, connected and isolated, the Russell7,8,9 and the Melcher-Nutting1-6 methods are the best known and most- widely used in the petroleum industry. These methods have disadvantages in that they give the total porosity of the samples and in that the samples are reduced to grain size in the determination. In many sands there may be little or no difference between total and effective porosity but in other sands there may be considerable difference between the two. For the estimation of oil-and gas reserves the effective porosity of the reservoir rock always should be used. Of the methods that have been developed for the determination of the effective porosity of reservoir rocks, or the porosity that considers only those pore spaces that are connected, the best known are the so-called Boyle's law6,10-13, and the Washburn-Buntings.5,6,11 methods. The Wash-burn-Bunting method is probably the most widely used because it gives effective porosity, it is rapid, and the apparatus is inexpensive. This method employs a special porosimeter in which the core sample is placed in direct contact with mercury. This method has disadvantages in that, as a result of the high vacuum created in the pore spaces, mercury is drawn into the openings, making it impossible to use the sample for a check determination and also ruining the sample for any further test, such as permeability. The purpose of this paper is to describe an appa-ratus employing the same principle as the Washburn-Bunting method but so designed that the core sample does not come in contact with the mercury in the porosimeter.

Hindered settling devices (teeter bed, up-current) are widely used in the mining industry to classify mineral streams into various size fractions and to separate minerals. In the coal industry these devices are extremely successful in separating coal of low densities from shale and pyrite. In the beach sand and in the iron ore industry, this equipment is used to beneficiate minerals either as stand alone units or lately as classifiers in spiral circuits. The challenge that these applications give to metallurgists is to be able to simulate the equipment by using mathematical models with or without the aid of small bench scale tests. In any green fields and many brownfields projects, limited amounts of samples make pilot plant tests difficult. Although there are mathematical approaches available, the accuracy is of such a nature that it can not be used for design purposes. This refers to the use of StrokeÆs law, NewtonÆs and the so called intermediate law as is widely published. Research done by the author indicates that in most applications none of the above laws apply. Using the original data as published by Perry and Chilton (Chemical Engineering Handbook, pp 5-64, 1973) and re-plotting it indicates that the settling velocity of particles is a function of (particle diameter)n where n varies between 1.2 and 1.6 which is different from that predicted by the intermediate law that suggests that n = 1.18. Another way of describing the relationship between the drag force and the Reynolds number is done by iterating between settling velocity and the Reynolds number. This needs more computer time but the accuracy obtained from this does add value to simulations. A small but simple test is suggested to determine the settling velocity of particles to enable metallurgists to determine variations from the theoretical calculations to determine the influence of viscosity and particle shape.

The Rahu and Ascot epithermal Au-Ag prospects are two km north of the Karangahake deposit in the Hauraki Goldfield, and all occur in an approximately 6 km2 north-south elongated magnetic æquietÆ zone. The prospects are hosted by andesitic flows, lithic-crystal tuffs and local sedimentary rocks; local silica sinter occurs at Ascot. These host rocks are intensely altered by quartz, adularia, albite, chlorite, pyrite, illite, interstratified illite-smectite and calcite. Several minerals show zoned distributions, such as widespread adularia that overlies more localised and deeper albite. Illite is the only dioctahedral phyllosilicate in several drill holes, but elsewhere it forms a shallow carapace underlain by interstratified illite-smectite with 50 to 90 percent illite. Veins are common with quartz dominating near the surface and calcite becoming more abundant at depth. Local laumontite-calcite veins also occur. Pseudosecondary and secondary fluid inclusions in quartz and calcite at Rahu and Ascot have homogenisation temperatures (Th) that range from 162¦ to 268¦C and 128¦ to 243¦C, respectively. Most inclusions have trapped dilute fluids with salinities of less than 1.9 weight percent NaCl equivalent, but 20 percent of the inclusions have salinities of 2.0 to 10.5 weight percent NaCl equivalent. Calculated paleowater table elevations suggest that the water table at Rahu occurred at 440 m above sea level (asl). At Ascot, silica sinter formed from discharging geothermal fluids (=100¦C) at the paleosurface at ~135 m asl. However the sinter also contains comb quartz with pseudosecondary inclusions that have a Th average of 229¦C, corresponding to a paleowater table at ~430 m asl during inclusion entrapment. Taken together, these results suggest that the Ascot sinter was buried by approximately 300 m of cover material during a major volcanic or tectonic event, and that subsequent hydrothermal fluids formed veins and alteration at Rahu and deposited comb quartz at Ascot.

When Professor Stoek asked for a paper on the above subject, it was too late to prepare by June 1, or near that time, one that would invoive any appreciable amount of experimental work or original research; but the suggestion was made that a review of the literature bearing on the subject might be submitted in good time, and that later this could be supplemented by any experimental data obtained during the summer, if experiments were carried out. In accordance with this suggestion, there are submitted the following notes on references found in the literature of recent years bearing on sulfur in gas. It is to be understood that, in general, these notes express the opinions of the authors whose papers are abstracted, not necessarily the opinions of the abstractors. Very little published information was found bearing directly on producer-gas sulfur, so this has been supplemented, in certain phases of the subject, by references to illuminating gas. Methods of analysis and processes for the elimination of sulfur from the gas are, without much doubt, very closely related in these two products. As in illuminating gas, sulfur is found in producer gas mainly as hydrogen sulfide, mixed with a much smaller and variable quantity of carbon bisu1fide.l The presence of minute quantities of other organic-sulfur compounds has been intimated, but no definite statement is made concerning these. The amount of sulfur present in producer gas is variable and depends on several conditions. The primary factor is the quantity of sulfur in the fuel, but the form in which the sulfur exists, the temperature of the producer, the air-steam ratio, and the efficiency of the scrubbing process are all determining factors. When the coal used contains less than 0.5 per cent. of sulfur, the sulfur in the gas will not exceed the quantity found in the average illuminating gas.2 Sulfur in producer gas may safely run higher than that in coke-oven gas, due to the lower-flame temperature

"The present work was aimed at synthesizing nanostructured hybrid materials derived from the functionalization of smectite clays with ligands containing thiol (-SH) groups for application in cadmium adsorption processes. An in nature Brazilian bentonite was investigated. The modification route was based on the grafting reaction between hydroxyl groups present on clay surface and the hydrolyzable alkoxy group of the (3-mercaptopropyl)trimethoxysilane in dry toluene under reflux. The present work showed that the proposed modification route was effective for the grafting of the thiol groups in the clay structure. The thiol-functionalized bentonite samples showed average binding capacities 160% higher with respect to Cd2+ to those obtained with the ungrafted material. These results support a mechanism of adsorption involving primarily ion complexation by the thiol groups (specific) instead of cation exchange (unspecific). The proposed modification processes are suggested for the preparation of novel adsorbent materials with controlled selectivity and specificity and therefore with good potential for separation and pre-concentration purposes.IntroductionMany efforts have recently been devoted to the design and preparation of inorganic-organic nanomaterials because of their potential application in novel functional materials. The intercalation of organic species within the spaces between interlayers of inorganic layered crystals provides nanostructures consisting of alternating layers of inorganic and organic compound. The intercalation reactions occur by insertion of mobile guest species (neutral, molecules, or ions) into the accessible crystallographic-defined vacant sites located between the layers (interlayer spacing) of the layered host structure [1}.Silane coupling agents, used widely for the modification of silica surfaces, have also been employed more recently for modification of layered silicates [2,3,4,5]. Modification with organosilane involves grafting reactions by establishing covalent bonds between the reactive groups of the layer, normally hydroxyl groups, and silane molecules. These reactions can be restricted to the external surface (the basal spacing remains unchanged) or to the interlayer surface, in which case an interlayer expansion occurs. The resulting material can be defined as a hybrid material or, more specifically, functionalized inorganic layered material [1]."

In magnetic taconite of the East Mesabi range, quartz, magnetite, and cummingtonite (OH}(Fe, Mg)(Si4O11)2) are the three major ore-forming minerals.' Fine grinding and magnetic separation of the taconite leads to a concentrate analyzing 64 to 65 pct Fe and 8 to 9 pct insoluble; the gangue content of the concentrate arising from the presence of locked magnetite-gangue particles, and of occluded gangue particles in magnetic floccules. To further upgrade such taconite concentrates, flotation appears to offer a particularly promising approach. To evaluate its effectiveness in separation, a knowledge of the flotation characteristics of each mineral comprising the concentrate becomes desirable. The floatability of magnetite and of quartz have already been reported in a previous paper,2 in which the flotation characteristics of the two minerals were correlated with the electrokinetic properties at the mineral-solution interfaces. Since cummingtonite has somewhat intermediate chemical composition between the above-named oxides, the electrokinetic and the flotation behavior of this mineral becomes of interest for both practical and fundamental reasons. In the present article the results of electrophoretic mobility measurements and of Hallimond tube flotation tests on cummingtonite are reported and are compared with those of quartz and magnetite. MATERIALS AND METHODS A sample of cummingtonite-rich taconite, received from the Mitchell pit, near Babbitt, Minn., was crushed and ground through 100 mesh, and the product was fractionated magnetically into three portions. First, a drum-type laboratory cobber was used to separate a highly magnetic portion, consisting mainly of free, but also containing locked, magnetite particles. The cobber tailing was then passed in two stages through a Franz isodynamic separator. The middle fraction was isolated, and, upon examination petrographically, was ascertained to be principally cummingtonite. The 100 to 150 mesh fraction of this sample was selected for the present study. It was cleaned by leaching briefly with hot, dilute HC1 and then by rinsing repeatedly with demineralized water. A ground and elutriated fraction of -5p cummingtonite was used for the electrophoretic measurements.
