"Inherently anisotropic rocks occur in abundance at many rock engineering project sites in Himalayan region. These rocks pose difficulty in analysis and design due to their direction dependent strength behaviour. Moreover the strength varies in a non-linear manner with confining pressure. Mohr- Coulomb strength criterion is widely used by geotechnical engineers for defining strength of rocks subjected to given confining pressure. However, the conventional Mohr-Coulomb (MC) criterion suffers from the limitation that the strength is treated to be linearly dependent on confining pressure. In the present article, the MC criterion has been modified by incorporating non-linear term while retaining the original parameters c and ?. The non-linearity with confining stress level has been imbibed through critical state concept (Barton, 1976). The criterion has been applied to a triaxial test data base comprising of more than 1140 triaxial tests conducted world-wide on anisotropic rocks. Statistical evaluation of the goodness of fit of the proposed criterion to the data-base has been carried out. Further the predictive capabilities have been evaluated by determining the error in estimation of triaxial strength if only few triaxial test data are available for determining the criterion parameters. The data base has also been back-analysed to assess the critical confining pressure for anisotropic rocks. Statistically the critical confining pressure, for the present criterion, may be taken nearly equal to 1.25?cmax, where ?cmax is the maximum value of the UCS out of all orientations of planes of anisotropy. It is concluded that reasonably good estimates of the anisotropic strength are possible through the proposed criterion.INTRODUCTIONMany rocks encountered in Himalayan region like shale, slate, schist and phyllite are inherently anisotropic and exhibit direction dependency in their strength behaviour. In addition, the strength of the rock also depends on the confining pressure and, the strength response is non-linear especially when the confining pressure may vary over large range. Conventionally, Mohr-Coulomb criterion is the most widely used criterion for rocks. However, the limitation of this criterion in its present form is that the strength is treated to be linearly dependent on the confining pressure. The present study attempts to address the following two main objectives: i) Include nonlinear response in the Mohr-Coulomb criterion while retaining parameters c and In their original form; and ii) consider anisotropic response of the rock for a given confining pressure. A nonlinear strength criterion, which uses shear strength parameters c and as per Mohr-Coulomb criterion, has been suggested based on critical state concept for rocks."

About ten years ago nepheline syenite was introduced to the ceramic industry and the material has now found application in the various branches of the industry, namely, as a vitrifying agent in white-wares and as a source of alumina and alkalies in glasses, glazes, and porcelain enamels. Spencel described the early mining and processing developments regarding this material. Since the time of his article many research papers have appeared relating to the usage of nepheline syenite but little has been published relative to subsequent mining and processing methods. A complete indexed review of the literature was issued recently by Ohio State University.2 Since "Lakefield" nepheline syenite from Blue Mountain, Ontario (Fig I); is the only commercial ceramic-grade nepheline syenite now being marketed on this continent, discussion is limited to this operation carried on by American Nepheline Limited, Lakefield, Ont., and its subsidiary in the United States, American Nepheline Cory. at Rochester, N. Y. The Deposit Blue Mountain is a long ridge rising to an elevation of about 350 ft at its highest point above the surrounding country and extending for about six miles in a northeasterly direction across Methuen township, Peterborough County. The rock of the Blue Mountain central alkaline intrusive is fine grained, light colored and of even granitic texture. The solidified mass consists predominately of the minerals albite, nepheline and microcline in order of abundance. The average mineralogical composition for the deposit obtained by a study of 112 samples taken regularly over the whole formation is as follows:3 Volumetric Mineral Per Cent Albite.................... 54 Microcline................ 20 Nepheline................ 22 Muscovite................ 2 Mafics.................... 2 (Biotite, hastingsite, magnetite) Total................... loo The mineral nepheline (or nephelite) belongs to the feldspathoid group but is lower in silica content than are the feldspars. It is a silicate of soda, potash, and alumina (NaKAl2O32SiO2). Its presence with albite (Na2oA12O3 6SiO2) and microcline (K2O A12O3 6SiO2) gives the Blue Mountain deposit an alkali content of 15 pct and an alumina content of approximately 24 pct. While this huge alkaline mass is somewhat variable mineralogically, it has a uniform chemical composition. When the iron, mostly in the form of magnetite, is removed during processing, a remarkably uniform finished product is obtained. Geological surveying has disclosed many million tons of nepheline syenite in the Blue Mountain deposit. Diamond drilling in the area where mining is now being carried out indicates a block of about one million tons.

"The Williams Mine is Canada's largest gold producer, with annual production of some 500 000 ounces of gold from two million tonnes of ore. Highly mechanized and automated underground mining practices are utilized at the property in order to help achieve high levels of productivity and the most cost-effective mining possible.Planning and design parameters for the underground ore handling system at the Williams Mine are described in this paper. Particular reference is made to the considerations that were built into the system to provide maximum operating flexibility through the use of multiple orepass systems, portable low profile jaw crushers, underground conveyors and automated hoisting equipment.IntroductionThe Williams Mine is situated in the Hernlo area of northwestern Ontario, approximately 40 Ian east of the town of Marathon (Fig. I). It is operated by the Williams Operating Corporation, which is owned equally by Teck Corporation and Corona Corporation, and is one of three adjacent properties forming the HernIo gold camp.The mine commenced operation in October 1985 at a nominal production rate of 3000 tpcd. Through an ongoing capital development program, winch was completed in late 1989, the production rate at the property was increased to its current level of 6000 tpcd. This paper describes the mine planning process and the evolution of current mining strategies with particular reference to the underground ore handling system .HistoryGold mineralization was discovered in 1944 in the Hemlo area of Northern Ontario, near the north shore of Lake Superior. A year later, 11 claims were staked over the showing and subsequently patented by the late Dr. Jack Kerr Williams.Over the next 35 years, other claims were subsequently staked, explored and abandoned in the immediate area of the 11 patented claims . In 1980 a predecessor of the Corona Corporation acquired claims adjoining the Williams property to the east. Drilling on this claim group started early in 1981 and intersected the Hemlo orebody in May of that year. In December 1981, Corona Corporation entered into an option agreement with Teck Corporation to explore and develop the property.A drilling program by LAC Minerals on the II patented claims discovered the Williams orebody in March 1982. The mine started production in 1985, pouring its first official bar of gold on December 6 of that year. Corona Corporation was awarded ownership of the Williams Mine conclusively by a decision of the Supreme Court of Canada on August 11, 1989. The court's ruling ended a legal dispute with LAC Minerals over the property initiated eight years earlier."

"Malcolm Knowles, the famous adult educator once wrote: ""What a challenge we in human resources development face if we are to avoid the obsolescence of our workforce. I can foresee this challenge requiring that we reconceptualize (...) and redefine the role of HRD, away from that of managing the logistics of conducting training activities to that of managing a system of learning resources"".The context in which this was written surrounds the subject of adult education and the need for business and industry to change its approach to the treatment of adults as learners. In explaining what 'managing a system of learning resources' means, Knowles refers to line supervisors and managers as the most ubiquitous resources for day-in and day-out employee development. In many organizations training has been largely a staff rather than line responsibility. Even where trainers reported to line management, it was still seen as a staff function performed by a few specialists.This change referred to by Knowles places a much heavier responsibility on line supervisors and managers for the development of their personnel than has traditionally been the case. Managing that change - handing over the responsibility to the line organization - is the supreme challenge for the HRD function.Just why is this change necessary? Because too often, the learner does not effectively use on the job what he or she learned in the classroom. In fact, learners often discard new methods and revert to the older ways. The reason training does not stick is that the systems for training and work management are most often separate entities and while one may support the other, they need to be a single integrated system in order to ensure the transfer to the job effectiveness of training and some real value for the training dollars.Because much training can be wasted, steps have to be taken to ensure that it fulfills its intended purpose. The effective and continuing application of knowledge and skills that learners acquire can only be realized when line supervisors and managers are at the centre of the training system.This paper describes how such a systemis being developed at the Iron Ore Company of Canada (IOC) as a functional training program is introduced. The following text provides background information on the IOC - who they are and where they are located, a definition of functional training, an evaluation of the suitability of this approach for adults in industry, a description of how the program is being implemented at IOC and some observations that have been made as this change is experienced."

The importance of the pressing operation in the forming of articles by powder metallurgy depends to a great extent on the type of product to be made. While in some few cases the pressing is merely a means of compacting loose powder particles into a solid mass preliminary to a sintering treatment, in most applications it constitutes a molding operation with the purpose of shaping the raw material in powder form into a certain predetermined, accurately defined part not altered in shape by subsequent sintering. In still other cases, no pressing at all but sintering in molds gives useful articles. A limited number of products are made by the simultaneous application of pressure and heat. The factors that control the product of the pressing operation are raw material, lubricant, type, size and shape of die and compact, magnitude and time of application of pressure, as well as temperature of pressing. All such factors need to be controlled; yet, depending on the function of the pressing operation, greater emphasis may be placed on processing factors other than the pressing operation. In any complete discussion of pressing, subsequent sintering cannot be disregarded. For the sake of brevity, the present paper has been limited to the mechanics of pressing and only occasionally refers to sintering. For the same reason, hot-pressing has been omitted as beyond the scope of this paper In any survey of the literature on the pressing of metal powders, the 1938 paper of Balshinl on the theory of the process of pressing deserves mention. The first attempts at an interpretation of pressing phenomena were made by Balshin' and RakovskL2 The experimental results of both are of great interest. Since the experimental results are not described, the work was repeated, using our own interpretation of the possible techniques, and is reported in the following pages. The basic theory of Balshin,' based on a hydro-dynamic analogy, however, leads to hut another way of plotting density and pres- , sure against height of a pressed compact. Since it does not give any new insight into the phenomena, nor account for the influence of side-wall friction, a discussion of the theory has been omitted from this paper. Density Gradients in Compacts The process of pressing metal powders in a die (disregarding for this consideration the powder filling and ejection operations) may be divided into three phases: (I) packing, (2) elastic and plastic deformation, (3) cold-working with or without fragmentation. In this investigation, polyethylene terephthalate (Mylar) was coated with various thicknesses of a vapor-deposited silvel- precoat followed by a uapor-deposited zinc using several orders of- magnitude variation in deposition rate of both the silver and zinc. The grain size and resistivity of the zinc film was primarily a function of the silver precoat thickness (in the range of 0.001 to 10 average Agprecoat thickness) and a secondary function of the zinc film thick-ness. The silver and zinc deposition rates were found to have a minor effect on the characteristics of- the zinc film. Electron and X-ray dilffraction results slwwed that all zinc films exhibited a fiber texture mith the (0001) axes essentially perpendiculav to the platze of the film When coating nonmetallic substrates such as paper or plastics with zinc metal vapors, it is found that the zinc will not condense unless extremely high evaporation rates or very low substrate temperatures are used. In 1931, Fraser' reported a procedure whereby zinc could be made to condense on nonmetallic substrates by depositing a very thin precoat of silver. Utilizing Fraser's method, the ermans' developed a commercial process of making "metallized film" capacitors during World War 11. The metallizing process, which was introduced in the United States shortly after the conclusion of World War 11, became one of the first large-scale commercial applications of vapor-deposited metal films and remains one of the larger applications in the electronics industry. The process, as developed by the Germans, consisted of depositing a thin precoat of silver on lacquered, kraft paper followed by a conducting layer of zinc. The resulting silver-zinc film was used as the capacitor The term silver-zinc will be used throughout thiz paper to mean a metal film formed by an extremely thi layer of silver, 10A or less in average thickness, and a zinc film IOOA or more in thickness deposited on the silver film. ---. electrode with the lacquered paper being the dielectric. "Estimation of rock drillability is vital for mining and boring operations. For this purpose, many researchers have developed various models and equations to estimate rock drillability. Most of these models aim to determine the drillability of rock and the penetration rate by using the physical and mechanical properties of rocks. Although drillability primarily depends on rock properties, other parameters have an impact on drillability as well. One of these parameters is the rotation speed of the bit. This study investigates the effect of rotation speed of the bit on drilling performance. Drilling tests were performed in the laboratory using rotary core drilling and a diamond drilling machine. The relationships between the physical rock properties and the penetration rate were investigated on 15 different rock types and four different rotation speeds were applied to determine the effect of rotation speed of bit on drilling. The uniaxial compressive strength, density, and P wave velocity show strong correlations with the penetration rate. In addition, if the values of the physical and mechanical properties of the rock increase, the effect of the rotation speed on the penetration rate decreases, i.e., increasing the rotation speed of the bit slightly affects drillability on hard and solid formations. 1. Introduction Drilling is one of the most essential operations in the mining industry, beginning from the exploration phase and continuing throughout all stages of production to the end of mine life (Taheri et al. 2016). In addition, drilling is widely using in the construction industry and other engineering operations. Various drillholes (blastholes, injection holes, borehole, diamond wire holes in natural stone mines, etc.), are needed during development and production activities in underground and open-pit mines as well as in dam, tunnel, road construction and sewage systems. For effective drilling operations, it is first necessary to gather information about the formation to be drilled. Drilling should then be performed after selecting appropriate drilling equipment and drilling parameters (thrust, pressure, rotational speed, flushing). Prediction of the drillability of rocks is vital for planning and performing the drilling process. Although, drilling is affected by several factors, the most important ones are related to the geological and mechanical properties of formation (Protodyakonov 1963, Paone et al 1969, Tandanand and Unger 1975, Pathinkar and Misra 1976, Rabia 1985, Perrin et al 1977). Determining the penetration rate is vital for planning a project and calculating the operation costs. The prediction of drilling affects the selection of drilling equipment, the efficiency of drilling equipment, project costs and the process of drilling operations."

In order to understand more fully the complexities of the reactions occurring between the liquid steel and the slag in the basic open-hearth steelmaking furnace, investigations in this country and. abroad have turned to laboratory equilibrium studies. This paper is one of a series of reports on investigations being conducted at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. The experimental work was completed early in 1942. The slag systems found in the basic open hearth are very complex, being made up of at least eight major components and as many others whose effect might be classified as minor. The first two papers of the series, by Fetters and Chipman,l,2 as well as the paper by Taylor and Chip-man,3 dealt with the simplest possible slag system that would resemble those found in the basic ope), hearth—the slag system consisting of CaO-MgO2-SiOz-FeO. (Taylor's rotating induction furnace eliminated the necessity of contamination of the slag by MgO.) Having arrived at some reasonable conclusions regarding the physical chemis- try of the reactions between molten iron and the simple slags at equilibrium, the next step was to investigate more complex slag systems. The major purpose of the present investigation was to determine what factors control the distribution of phosphorus between molten iron and the more complex basic slags at equilibrium, and to what extent these factors are influential. The slags used contained CaO, MgO, SiO2, FeO, Fe2O3, P2O6, MnO, Al2O3 and CaF2, but not all of the slag samples contained all of these components at one time. Review of Literature Although a number of interesting papers have been published on the subject of dephosphorization of an iron bath, there are as yet no results from laboratory studies that give thoroughly reliable information on the dephosphorization reaction. Even for the supposedly simple Fe-O-P system involving iron-phosphorus melts and iron oxide-iron phosphate slags, the experimental results are contradictory and no formulas have been established that adequately fit the equilibrium conditions. The Fe-O-P system has been studied by Schackmann and Krings,4 von Samson-Himmelstjerna,6 Oelsen and Maetz,6 Bischof and Maurer,7 Diepschlag and Schürmann,8 and Herty,9 and the results of their investigations appear in Table I. THE scope of this paper will be limited to finished materials that contain a large preponderance (around 80 per cent or more) of magnesium oxide. The large and commercially important production of refractory dolomite and modified dolomites is not discussed here, and the production of magnesium basic carbonate for use as a heat insulator is barely mentioned. The discussion is confined mainly to magnesias produced in comparatively great quantity by direct processing of naturally occurring raw materials and hence excludes secondary or highly purified products such as pharmaceutical products or U.S.P. light and heavy calcined magnesias of commerce. NOMENCLATURE The nomenclature of the magnesia products that will be discussed is somewhat confusing, in that it is customary in the trade to designate as "calcined magnesite" the materials that result from the calcining of magnesite to temperatures that remove the contained carbon dioxide. The finished product, therefore, is not magnesite at all but simply a more or less pure magnesium oxide or magnesia. Furthermore, partly for statistical and partly for commercial reasons, it has been customary, during recent years, to classify as "calcined magnesite" products that result from the heat-treatment of magnesium hydroxide precipitated from magnesium-containing brines; products that, obviously, have no relationship whatever to magnesite. In the listing of magnesia-containing materials, tonnages of which are regularly reported by the Bureau of Mines, reports ordinarily are made under two headings: "caustic calcined" magnesite, in which all of the varieties of products treated at relatively low temperatures are lumped; and "dead-burned" magnesite, in which are included both high-purity and low-purity, and particularly both high-iron and low-iron, materials that have been so heat-treated that the magnesium oxide occurs predominantly as crystalline periclase-materials used almost entirely for refractory purposes. In 1940 the apparent domestic consumption of "caustic calcined" magnesite was approximately 17,000 tons, about 95 per cent of which was produced in this country. The apparent consumption of "dead-burned" magnesite was approximately 172,000 tons, some 82 per cent of which was domestically produced. In both total quantity and percentage of material produced within the United States, these figures are record highs for many years past. UTILIZATION As indicated by these figures, the major tonnage outlet for magnesia is the refractories industry, in which magnesia is employed principally in three ways: (I) as dead-burned grain magnesite for the construction and maintenance of the hearths or bottoms of basic open-hearth furnaces; (2) in the form of refractory magnesite bricks and shapes; and (3) as a chemical

The romance of the River lives on in the tales of Mark Twain; and many Americans still think of the Mississippi River in terms of the steamboats loaded with passengers, gamblers and cotton. Yet for many years, coal has been a major cargo on the American waterways. Currently, about 100 million tons a year of coal is handled in some part of its journey from mine to destination by barge. The bulk of this traffic has been on the Ohio River System and the Upper Mississippi River System in years past. Now we have a new entry. Over the past 10 years various movements of coal have developed down the Mississippi River to power plants at Memphis and along the Gulf Coast, and a small amount of metallurgical coal has moved down the Mississippi River for export to Japan since 1970. But in 1980 a brand new player came on the scene. 1980 was a momentous year for the American coal business. Historically, we have exported about 50 million tons a year of metallurgical coal to the world's steel mills. Just before and after World War I, we also had a fairly healthy export trade in steam coal; and again in the late forties, we supplied large amounts of coal to Europe until domestic production could recover from the ravages of World War II. But since the early fifties, the name of the export game has been metallurgical coal. Starting in the mid seventies, something began that was almost totally missed by the American coal industry; and that was the growth in the use of coal first in Europe and now in the Far East as a steam product and as an alternative to petroleum products. As these world coal markets began increasing, the U.S. at first was thought to be noncompetitive because ocean rates were still very low. For example, as recently as 1977, Australian coal could be moved all the way from Australia to the Gulf Coast for $12.50 per metric ton. Coal exporting countries were Poland, Australia and South Africa, except for the continuing exports of U.S. high quality metallurgical coal. But then came the second oil shock, and all of the sudden that $12.50 rate from Australia to the U.S. Gulf became $25.00. And then suddenly and almost unrecognized by the American industry, American coal was in fact competitive at overseas destinations because of the drastic change in trade patterns brought on by the doubling and tripling and quadrupling of bunker fuel prices for ships.

The recovery of the heavier components from a gas cap or retrograde pool is shown to be the greatest when the sand is cycled with a dry gas at a low pressure. This conclusion is in direct opposition to the belief that the most efficient production program is pressure maintenance and cycling at or near the dew point. The results are calculated from: (I) constant volume, variable composition pressure-volume-temperature tests on a mixture of trap gas and liquid from a producing well; (2) published equilibrium constant data and the measured composition of the dew-point material; and (3) the fact that in a sand section of homogeneous permeability, injected gas displaces reservoir gas nearly, quantitatively. The results are based on the simplifying assumption that variable permeability systems may be defined by the ratio of two statistical parameters, and that gas injected into an actual sand will behave as though the sand were composed of many layers, each of constant permeability. Introduction Pressure decline in gas-condensate type reservoirs is accompanied by the formation of a liquid phase throughout the reservoir. Over the past ten years the processing of the material from these types of reservoirs for the heavier hydrocarbon components and the return of the light fractions to the reservoir ("cycling") has become increasingly popular. It has often been stated that the purpose of such a program is to prevent the loss of the retrograde liquid phase formed in the reservoir. The purpose of this paper is to present the results of laboratory tests and computations concerned with several possible methods of producing a gas cap or condensate type of reservoir. The results show that the recovery of heavier hydrocarbons for this type of reservoir is not a maximum under conditions of cycling at or near the dew-point pressure. Instead, variations in permeability and the ability of the dry injected gas to revaporize condensate, point to cycling at a considerably reduced pressure as the optimum production-method. In addition the paper suggests a way of evaluating sands for their permeability variation. The calculations presented in the following sections of the paper are in terms of the production of the butanes and heavier fraction from the gas cap of a field which had an original pressure of approximately 3000 psi. Specifically, the calculations show: 1. To what extent the condensate formed in the reservoir after pressure decline can be recovered by the cycling of a dry absorber-plant gas through the sands. 2. Whether there would be greater recovery of hydrocarbons if cycling were instigated at the original reservoir pressure.

The recovery of the heavier components from a gas cap or retrograde pool is shown to be the greatest when the sand is cycled with a dry gas at a low pressure. Wollastonite in Essex County, New York, occurs as a typical contact mineral in a series of rocks metamorphosed by anorthosite. Sole current use is in various types of electric welding fluxes. Its uniform lathlike shape suggests its use as a specialized filler. Introduction Wollastonite (CaSiO3) was first noted in the vicinity of Willsboro, Essex County, New York, about 1810 by Dr. William Meade, and described from the same locality in 1821 by Lardner Vanuxem.' Recent exploration and development indicate that the deposit is of adequate size for continued exploitation on a larger scale than the present operations. The only other known occurrence of like magnitude in this country is in Kern County, California.* Wollastonite has been reported from Michigan, Pennsylvania, and Lewis County, New York, but these are little more than mineral localities. Geology The Essex County wollastonite has been found outcropping at numerous separate localities in a belt of contact metamorphosed sediments, 1/4 mile wide, which begins 2 miles southwest of the village of Willsboro and trends N. 70" W. for approximately 6 miles (Fig. I). In this belt, the pre-Cambrian Grenville has been injected and partially replaced by the more liquid portions of an anorthositic magma. Bud-dington and Whitcomb3 have described the rock in this contact metamorphosed belt as "Mixed gneisses: Grenville mafic, pyroxenic and garnetiferous gneisses and skarns* with local nearly uniform garnet or pyroxene layers and with gabbroic anorthosite sheets. A few limestone layers." These rocks are underlain, presumably at no great depth, by gabbroic anorthosite gneiss, the typical Whiteface border facies of the Adirondack anorthosite massif. The occurrence of wollastonite in large quantities was discovered during the quarrying of the garnet-rich layer that overlies the wollastonite at one opening. Further prospecting revealed its presence elsewhere in the belt, overlain in most places by the garnet. Accurate tracing of the wollastonite is difficult, owing to the glacial cover and to the fact that the weathered surface of the mineral has a dark, dirty brown color, and that the wollastonite itself has been dissolved more or less completely along the outcrops. It has, however, been noted at 10 localities within the skarn belt in the first 2 1/2 miles from its southeastern end. It has not been found in the northern half of the belt and therefore may be limited to the southern half. Evaluating the economic viability as well as the sustainability of the Circular Economy (CE) system requires a deep understanding of the distribution of all elements, compounds, alloys, materials etc. in flows. In this paper, the circularity of the copper value chain, including primary and secondary processing, is rigorously evaluated. The studied system comprises the metallic copper production from primary sources (from mineral to metal), copper-containing commodity production (copper is mixed with other metals) and copper recycling through secondary smelting to close the loop. This is linked to photovoltaic (PV) panels and battery storage. A simulation model of this system is created using HSC Sim, considering more than 30 elements (and its various compounds), 180 unit operations and 800 flows. From the mass and energy balances obtained through the simulation, an exergy analysis is conducted to evaluate the resource consumption from a second law (entropy) perspective. Additionally, these results are complemented through a Life Cycle Assessment (LCA), the recovery of technology elements and by-products is discussed, while quantifying the losses through the value chain. Through the digitalization of the complete system, a better CAPEX and OPEX understanding of the metal recovery and losses can be obtained, as well as the associated resource consumption and environmental impacts. New flowsheets and technologies can be evaluated. Several scenarios show how the resource consumption and the environmental impacts are affected by the recovery of different materials to produce different products. INTRODUCTION A key challenge of the circular economy (CE) is the linkage and optimization of both resource and energy efficiency of the (renewable) energy infrastructure and the resource cycle depicted by Figure 1 simultaneously. In addition, the CE requires the linkage of all stakeholders as shown by Figure 1. This has been discussed in some detail by Reuter and Bartie (2019) and Reuter et al. (2019). Copper and all its associated technology elements is one of the key enabling metals that is an economical copper colored thread through CE society (Reuter & Kojo, 2014). The Metal Wheel (Figure 2) shows the linkage of and recovery of various elements associated with copper and other carrier metals. This reveals that copper acts as an important carrier metal because of its properties i.e. the wealth of technology elements it carries from geological ores, but also its capacity to act as solvent of valuable elements and thence a key closer of various complexly connected element and material cycles when these technology elements are released during copper refining. The same applies to all other carrier metals of modern CE society as shown for example recently in a lead policy brief (Blanpain, Reuter & Malfliet, 2019).

An improved apparatus is described for the deterrni-nation of interfacial tension* by the pendant drop method in the pressure range from 15 to 15000 psi and the temperature range from 100º td 280°F. The chief characteristics of this apparatus are reliability and ease of operation. Temperature control was accomplished by means of an electrically heated jacket which could he completely removed while cleaning the apptrratus. The cell was designed so that the camera could he placed about I in, from the window without overheating the carnera lens. Separate "0" rings employed to seal each window and corresponding window backup plate gave very reliable window operation at 10,000 psi. An extra pistorr-cylinder combination was added so that a high compression ratio could he attained when gas was employed as one phase in the pendant drop cell. Other essential parts of the system were similar to an apparatus already described.' The interfacial tension for carbon dioxide and water varies from about 69 dynes/cm at 15 psi to about 19 dynes/cm at 1,250 psi for 100°F. For pressure.r between t,500 and 3,500 psi, the interfacial tension is between 32 and 24 dynes/cm at this temperature. The interfacial tension at 280°F varies from about 50 dynes/cm at 200 psi to about 17 dynes /cm at 10,000 psi. The maximum surface excess for carbon dioxide, assuming the surface excess of water to be zero, occurs at about 1,500 psi jor the 100°F isotherni and Itas a value of about -79 X 1014 mol/sq cm. At 160°F this maximum IS shifted to about 2,000 psi and has a value of about 10 X 1014 111ol/.sq cm. Other maxima, us well as several minima, are present at these and other temperatures. Judging from the data on the solubility of water in carbon dioxide at elevtrted pressures2,3, it appears that the principal maxinza natned are in regions of increasing solubility of the water in the carbon dioxide rich phase. INTRODUCTION AND APPARATUS A pendant drop interfacial tension apparatus which would accommodate an opaque liquid in a gas phase was constructed several ycars ago' for industrial purposes. This apparatus was used as a starting point for the present development. The objective of the present development was to enhance reliability and convenience of operation. "The performance of column flotation is strongly influenced by the effectiveness of the gas sparging system. Unfortunately, field studies suggest that gas injector systems used for column sparging are not always optimized. This unfavorable condition can create a number of issues within the concentrator including lower recoveries, poorer metallurgical upgrading, decreased capacities, increased circulating loads, higher reagent consumption and inefficient energy usage. To help overcome these problems, techniques have been developed that can be adopted by plant operators to improve sparger performance. These techniques include (i) design modifications to sparger components such as nozzles, distributors and internal parts and (ii) operational improvements such as proper balancing of gas/water flows, elimination of unnecessary pressure drops, and staged injection of frothing agents. This article reviews the important criteria that govern sparger operation and provides data showing how simple low-cost improvements can positively impact column performance. INTRODUCTION Column flotation cells have become the most popular machine design for industrial applications that require high purity concentrates. The superior metallurgical performance of column cells can be largely attributed to their unique geometry, which readily accommodates the use of froth washing systems. The wash water minimizes the nonselective entrainment of ultrafine gangue minerals that would otherwise be hydraulically carried in the water reporting to the froth concentrate. The larger height-to-diameter ratio of columns allows a deep froth to be maintained, which is essential to achieve even water distribution. Due to these unique features, column cells can provide impressive levels of metallurgical performance closely approaching the ultimate separation curve predicted using the flotation release analysis method (Kohmuench et al., 2007). Another very important feature of column cells is the design of the gas sparging system. One popular choice in the minerals processing industry is the Eriez SlamJet® sparger. As shown in Figure 1, this type of sparger operates by passing compressed gas through a small discharge nozzle. Fluid turbulence created by the exiting gas disperses and distributes small bubbles into the flotation pulp. The sparger is equipped with an internal moveable rod that is attached to a pressure diaphragm in the back housing of the sparger. The internal rod automatically moves back/forward and opens/closes the nozzle outlet when the compressed gas is switched on/off. This patented design effectively eliminates the accidental backflow of flotation pulp into the injection tube during shutdowns. The sparger can be operated as a gas-only injector or with the introduction of a small amount of high-pressure sparger water (Kohmuench et al., 2010)."

A nano-scale investigation has been carried out by applying an AFM (atomic force microscope) to study in situ the adsorption of various collectors, i.e., oleic acid, octanohydroxamic acid (HA), and salicylhydroxamic acid (SHA), on bastnaesite in aqueous solutions. The obtained AFM images show that the surface morphology of bastnaesite changes greatly after it contacts the solutions of the collectors, suggesting that all these collectors can effectively adsorb on bastnaesite. Increasing temperature can help increase the adsorption of oleic acid on bastnaesite. FTIR (Fourier transform infrared) results also show that all these collectors adsorb strongly on bastnaesite with a strong absorbance spectra being detected, which confirms with the results obtained with AFM imaging analysis. In general, hydroxamic acid collector (HA and SHA) adsorbs on bastnaesite mainly in the form of insoluble metal hydroxamate. This specific adsorption mechanism explains that a high selectivity with a moderate collectivity will be achieved with a hydroxamic acid collector for the flotation of bastnaesite. INTRODUCTION Rare earth metals, which are very important to modern industry, are generally extracted from numerous rare earth minerals. In practice, however, the actual extraction of rare earth is mainly from bastnaesite, monazite and xenotime. The Mountain Pass mine is one of the largest rare earth mine in the world, at which the main rare earth mineral is bastnaesite. In the past years, froth flotation has been applied to the beneficiation of Mountain Pass ore. In practice, the rare earth ore is usually crushed, milled and further separated from calcite, barite and other gangue minerals by froth flotation, in which the rare earth oxide-bearing minerals stick to aerated bubbles in the pulp and float to the surface, leaving the gangue at the bottom of the flotation cell and disposed of as tailings.(Bulatovic, 2010) In spite of the fact that froth flotation has been applied to treat the bastnaesite ore at the Mountain Pass mine, the rare earth oxide (REO) recovery is still low,(Anderson, 2015) especially compared to the one obtained with sulfide flotation. For example, the typical recovery obtained at the Mountain Pass mine was only about 70%. This may be due to the low selectivity of the collector (oleic acid). In addition, to enhance the flotation selectivity, the pulp in the mine circuit has to be heated up to 70 to 90°C and it involves a lot of energy consumption. Last but not the least, a lot of depressants have to be added to improve the selectivity of flotation process. Therefore, it is critical to re-examine the existing flotation process at the Mountain Pass mine and seek any chance of improvement. (Anderson, 2015)
