My previous paper is entitled, The Laws of Igneous Ernanation Pressure. The present paper lays no claim to the exactitude and completeness of a law, since it is of a provisional nature and may be disregarded when experiments have established a basis for more exact reasoning. The general physical states in which aqueous emanations may occur are first considered. The possible physical couditions under which the mineral elements may occur in emanations are then discussed, and a classification of deposits, dependent on emanation, is proposed. A system of scientific experimental investigation is outlined, and it is shown that the physical and chemical properties of emanation may be exactly determined thereby. The investigation is urged as feasible and simple, and not necessarily requiring large and costly apparatus. It is the only step necessary to make possible the formulation of a complete set of laws of igneous emanation. Process of Emanation. In a rising column, magma ranges in temperature from 900° to 1,200°C. Exhalation must begin at some fairly great depth. What this depth may be we can only surmise, since no experimental evidence is available. Exhalation, however, continues as the magma flows upward, until at another level the occluded gases have all escaped. This depth is probably upward of 5,000 ft. (See Fig. 1.) All exhalations must come from between these two levels. As the whole emanation is the sum of the exhalations and residues, the residues must come from below the uppermost level. They will be most abundant when coming from those parts of the intrusion which have solidified below the lower level.

The purpose of this paper is to review the more important developments in the production of petroleum during 1930 in Texas, excluding the Panhandle and Gulf Coast districts, giving emphasis to trends rather than to statistics. Outstanding Developments Aside from increasing curtailment of drilling operations and general prorating of production by state authority the most noteworthy developments for the year appear to have been: 1. Demonstrations of the fictitiousness of potentials as shown first by Darst Creek pool, rated at 180,000 bbl. and having actually 78,000 bbl. daily, and especially by the Hendricks pool of Winkler County, with potential of about 1,000,000 bbl. daily in mid-year and production of only 52,000 bbl. daily when opened to continuous full production in December. 2. Rapid development of the Darst Creek pool under competitive drilling. 3. Orderly and highly successful development of the Van pool under unit operation. 4. Failure of several highly rated structures southwest and northeast of Van. 5. Extension of the deep Simpson production at Big Lake and increased interest in these pre-Mississippian pays in North Central Texas and West Texas. 6. Discovery of prolific wells in northwest Rusk County from sands of Upper Cretaceous age, portending a rapid and extensive development campaign around the northwest margin of the Sabine uplift. North Central Texas It appears logical to discuss the new developments by districts as set out by the American Petroleum Institute, but North Texas and West Central Texas districts will be treated together. From a distance, the 0.75-km (0.5-mile) rail line that sits in the shadows of Vale-Inco?s Stobie Mine outside of Sudbury, Ontario could be mistaken for a standard conveyor belt hauling ore from the nearby mine. But with its large, yellow-painted loop and interconnected green rail cars that invert themselves on the loop before correcting with a smooth rollover further down the track, one might assume that this is some sort of test track for a new roller coaster. The fact of the matter is that it is the proving ground for Rail-Veyor technology, a technology that the company hopes will one day change the face of ore transportation in surface and underground mines around the world. With a line of linked, low-profile rail cars that are capable of carrying up to 1 t (1.1 st) per car of ore by way of simple, above ground, lightweight rail track, the technology is not groundbreaking. In fact, it was developed in the 1960s for the French State Railroad. A demonstration plant for the Florida Institute of Phosphate Research was installed in 2000 and the first commercial under-ground installation was in 2007 in South Africa at Harmony Gold?s Phakisa Mine. There, a 4.7-km- (2.9-mile-) long tram between two shafts operates three Rail-Veyor trains on a shared track. The difference is that the application that is being tested day-and-night in Sudbury is getting closer to wide production, thanks to the use of computer controlled automation that has helped turn an old idea into a cost-effective modern solution.

Within the Mine Safety and Health Administration's (MSHA's) classification of metallnonmetal (MAM) mining, the number of independent contractor' employees has increased significantly in recent years. In 1985 independent contractor employee hours reported to MSHA accounted for 4.5% of all M/NM mining employee hours (excluding office workers); by 1994 that proportion had doubled to 9.0%. As a result, these workers now account for an increasingly significant proportion of fatal and nonfatal mining accidents. According to MSHA's statistics, annually computed fatality incidence rates (the number of fatalities per 200,000 employee hours) for independent contractors working in M/NM mining are consistently higher than those for operator employees. Over the five-year period from 1990 through 1994, 53 independent contractor employees were fatally injured while working on M/NM mine property (See Table 1). More than one third of these fatalities (36%) were due to accidents involving powered haulage; 21% were machinery accidents; and 11% percent were falling material accidents. Combined, these three accident classifications accounted for 68% of all independent contractor fatalities occurring on M/NM mine property during these years. Clearly, current efforts to increase the safety of the mining workforce must also address the safety of the independent contractor employee. This report is a preliminary attempt to identify trends in the employment and safety of independent contractor workers by identifying which segments of M/NM mining are experiencing the greatest increases in the number of independent contractor employees and by examining changes in the rates and types of accidents in which these employees are involved. Porous silicon carbide (SiC) has been the top selection for diesel particular filters (DPFs) since 2000 because of its high thermal diffusivity and strong body, which help it to survive in the harsh environment of a diesel exhaust system. However, the process to produce SiC DPFs is a costly one. The work presented herein describes more cost effective composite materials for this application, namely Si-SiC and Si₃N₄-SiC. Both composites have shown excellent filtration efficiency, low back pressure and outstanding survivability of regeneration at high soot loadings. Since the composites are batched from silicon metal, they can be prepared by a low temperature process that is impossible in the production of pure SiC PDFs. In fact, fabrication of SiC composites simply involves reactions between nitrogen gas and silicon metal, or silicon metal bonded with SiC, and as such uses a much less costly process when compared to the one employed to make SiC. In addition, the pore structure of the composites can easily be tuned by selecting raw materials and changing the ratio of two components. A typical pore structure consists of well connected pores with a median pore size of 5-20 µm and a porosity of 40-55%. This talk will describe the exothermic behavior as well as the mechanical and thermal properties of SiC composites in comparison to those of SiC filters. It will also show the superior thermal shock resistance of Si₃N₄ bonded SiC which is due to the unique combination of these phases that lowers the thermal expansion and elastic modulus relative to pure SiC.

Some time ago, the writer received from W. O. Borcherdt, Superintendent of the works of the Bertha Mineral Co. at Austinville, Va., several specimens of a dense yellowish slag-like material, containing cavities showing clear needle-like crystals, and representing a product formed by the fumes of zinc oxide and basic lead sulphate from the oxide furnace, attacking the firebrick lining of the flues. The matrix, which is of a greenish-yellow 'color, is made up chiefly of an amorphous glass, carrying numerous crystals, the latter being well-defined, clear, and transparent, but colored a very light yellow by small amounts of ferric oxide. A number of the crystals were carefully separated from the matrix and tested with the blowpipe. They have a fusibility of about 2, yield a globule of lead and a coating of lead oxide before the blowpipe on charcoal, and contain some zinc. Their hardness is 5 to 6. Under the microscope the crystals appear to be made up of a prism, with narrow faces, and a fairly large pinacoid, but unfortunately show no terminal faces (Fig. 1). Between crossed nicols they gave parallel extinction in the three planes containing the crystallographic axes, and are therefore orthorhombic. The index of refraction is high. A number of the best crystals were measured on the reflection goniometer, the angles given below representing the average of measurements made on different individuals. mm = 46º 52' mb = 66º 34' a :b :c = 0.4334:l:? Mineral maps of æintactÆ and large particle textures have been produced routinely from optical microscope images. Polished thin sections of large particles (1 - 3 mm) provide a balance between representative sampling and the preservation of primary rock textures. Optical microscopy is an efficient way to generate mineral maps suitable for geometallurgical applications. The automated optical mineral identification was carried out using a Leica DM6000¬ microscope with a high precision stage suitable for direct tiling of image frames and good registration of multiple image layers. Standard images collected were 10 x 10 frames (20 mm x 16 mm). Four image layers were recorded: ætransmitted light plane polarisedÆ, ætransmitted light crossed polarsÆ, ætransmitted light crossed polars with 1l tint plateÆ and æreflected lightÆ. All image analysis was carried out using Definiens Professional V5¬. The four image bands were read directly in 12 greyscale bands. A segmentation algorithm produced objects based on homogeneity across all bands. These objects were then classified using a complex set of rules (Process Tree) that are based on image brightness in all 12 bands. Opaque and non-opaque minerals were classified in the same sample. Using this protocol up to 12 minerals can be satisfactorily classified in one sample. The opaque minerals were recognised using colour ratio and reflectance intensity in the reflected light image. Non-opaque minerals are more difficult because of the complex variable colours of many minerals and the complexity of interference colours. However, object-oriented classification using three transmitted light image layers and multiple rules is a powerful technique for recognition of these minerals.

G. W. TRAER (author's reply to discussion*).-Prof. Parr's discussion develops two points, upon which it seems desirable to comment. First, as to putting through a large enough tonnage to secure economic operation. At each manipulation of each oven 1500 1b. (680 kg.) of coal will be charged and the resultant coke discharged from a like amount of coal. . Sixteen slabs will be discharged at each manipulation, each approximately 5 ½ in. by 11 in. by 6 ft. (14 cm. by 28 cm. by 1.8 m.). The operating schedule of a commercial plant, based upon our observations and calculations, indicates a "through put" of at least 12 tons of coal per day for each oven. We have made these figures conservatively and feel confident of materially exceeding them in a fully developed operating system. Our oven plant, with containers, will not cost as much as high-temperature plants of the same capacity. They do not require container equipment; but this is much more than offset by the cost of the great basal heat regenerative flues. Our operating requirements are quite susceptible to the application of mechanical devices and we believe our labor cost will be well within the necessary limit. Second, as to Fig. 1 in my paper, showing the specific gravity' of the tar. It Was not intended to show that the specific- gravity of -the tar rises With decreasing heat, since of course the contrary is the fact. One of the curves shows the relation between temperature and specific gravity and the other the relation between temperature and- yield. Our consulting engineer prepared the chart according to his customary method for showing two dimensions.

The plan for establishing relations of American industry with national labor on a definite basis so closely follows the channels of the efforts of Engineering Council, principally in the classification and compensation work, that it is of special interest to the engineering profession. The principles laid down under the following headings are about to he submitted to a referendum vote of the membership of the Chamber of Commerce of the United States. These principles were prepared by a special committee of the Chamber of Commerce after a long period of study of the entire subject of industrial relations. 1. Industrial enterprise, as a source of livelihood for both employer and employee, should be so conducted that due consideration is given to the situation of all persons dependent upon it. 2. The public interest requires adjustment of industrial relations by peaceful methods. 3. Regularity and continuity of employment should be sought to the fullest extent possible and constitute a responsibility resting alike upon employers, wage earners, and the public. 4. The right of workers to organize is as clearly recognized as that of any other element or part of the community. 5. Industrial harmony and prosperity will be most effectually promoted by adequate representation of the parties in interest. Existing forms of representation should be carefully studied and availed of in so far as they may be found to have merit and are adaptable to the peculiar conditions in the various industries. 6. Whenever agreements are made with respect to industrial relations they should be faithfully observed. 7. Such agreements should contain provision for prompt and final interpretation in the event of controversy regarding meaning or application.

The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) has continued the research role of the former US Bureau of Mines (USBM) to engineer techniques that will reduce the hazards in the mining workplace associated with coal bumps. Recent research focused on a longwall coal mine in Utah with overburden greater than 750 m (2,500 ft) containing several massive sandstone units. The primary field instrumentation at the site was three-dimensional, full waveform, autonomous microseismic arrays placed underground and on the surface in order to surround the active multi-panel longwall district. The purpose of these arrays was to help investigate the strata mechanics associated with the redistribution of stress and the associated gob formation of the longwall. Specifically, the seismic arrays were used to determine the timing and location of the failure in the strata surrounding the active mining. Overall 13,000 seismic events were detected and located with on-site processing during the five months the panel was being mined, including a magnitude (ML) 4.2 event. Of these, a smaller subset of 5,000 well-located events was selected during post-processing to form a consistent data set for analysis in this paper. From this data set, it was observed that the seismic events generally occurred in advance of the longwall face, both above and below the panel, consistent with failure of the strata in the forward stress abutment zone. Also, the occurrence of the ML 4.2 seismic event within 150-180 m (500-600 ft) of a deep cover longwall face with no associated bump caused a re-evaluation of the nature of the connection between seismic activity and coal bumps.

To OBTAIN the best results from hammer drills, close attention must be paid to two factors in drill maintenance, which are of equal importance; one is lubrication, the other is the shank. With the exception of stoping drills, most modern rock drills require both oil and grease. The oil ports are in the lubricator, on or behind the hammer cylinder; the grease port for the lubrication of the 'chuck sleeve and rotating mechanism is on the chuck end. Ordinary machine oil is not, adapted to rock drills; a heavier more gelatinous oil such as castor machine oil or liquid-grease should be used. The lubricators should be filled-once for every 12 or 14 ft. (3.5 to 4m.), of hole drilled. Grease-guns should be used to fill the port in the chuck end once a shift; a medium ( No. 3) grease is well adapted to this purpose. Hard grease must not be put into- the lubricators, as it will not flow through that part. Contrary to the popular belief, oiling a machine once or twice a shift does not provide sufficient lubrication; the drills should be oiled once for every 12 or 14 ft. of, hole drilled. The rotating handle of a stoping drill -is an oil reservoir and is provided with a port for oiling. The rotating handle is packed with wicking, or similar material, which causes the oil to feed slowly from the handle to the other parts of the machine. Stoping drills require oil at. least twice a shift; lighter oils than castor, such as Arctic Ammonia may be used.

"Electrofilter dust, a residue generated in the last stage of the Bayer process in the hydroxide aluminum calcination, was characterized to evaluate the alumina that was potentially extractable with sulfuric acid. The process studied aims to produce aluminum sulfate for water coagulant uses, taking advantage of the residues that accumulate in large quantities in the proximity of plants with difficult recycling for storage. Acid leaching is carried out at different concentrations of sulfuric acid, at different temperatures, pulp densities, and times, to dissolve gibbsite and transition aluminas. The result is an aluminum sulfate solution without iron and with commercial specifications.IntroductionElectrofilter dust is a residue generated in the last stage of the Bayer Process [1] in the hydroxide aluminium calcination. The residue is a mixture of alumina and hydrates which have not completed their calcination process.Electrofilter dust, composed by alpha alumina, gibbsite and transition aluminas [2] can be leached in an acid medium by putting most of the aluminium in solution; the remaining residue should be mainly andisolved alpha alumina. In many hydrometallurgical processes, sulphuric acid has been selected as the cheapest and the most effective leachant [3,4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12, 13, 14, 15]The aim of this study is to determine the effect of temperature, acid concentration and pulp density on the sulphuric acid leaching of electrofilter fines for aluminium dissolution, in order to produce aluminium sulphate for water coagulant uses. This will provide a commercial product and at the same time eliminate the environmental problem created as a result of the storage of large quantities of electrofilter fines in the vicinity of the Bayer plant."

MUCH attention has been directed to mine-air flow in recent years, more especially in Great Britian where there is frequent reference to a theory of fluid flow developed by English engineers. Briefly stated, this theory is that for similar passages of the same relative roughness, in which fluid flow occurs, the conditions of flow are exactly the same for equal values of the product W D V/ µ, where W = density of the fluid, D = diameter of the passage through which flow occurs, V = mean velocity of flow, and µ = absolute viscosity of the fluid flowing. This, the "Reynolds Criterion" of fluid flow, had its origin in the work of Prof. Osborne Reynolds' more than 40 years ago. Later, Lord Rayleigh amplified the theory2 which has been conclusively proved for small pipes by the experiments of Stanton and Pannel3 over a large flow range, and by Lacey4 over a somewhat more limited range. Concordant results on small pipes have also been obtained by numerous other investigators with single fluids over more or less limited ranges of flow. According to this theory results in one medium, such as water, are immediately applicable to another, such as air; and experimental results on models are (theoretically, at least) applicable to full-scale designs. This is of great importance in aeronautics and can be of considerable value in mine ventilation research. Hodgson, in a recent paper,5 has outlined the application of this theory to mine-air flow and recent English experiments" on the resistance of a timbered mine airway have been expressed in this form.

On .the 22d of November, 1879, white, iron unexpectedly ap peared while working the Cedar Point Furnace, Port Henry, N Y., on the following burden, calculated to turn out mill and foundry iron: Anthracite coal,. ., .. .. 8000 pounds. Connellsville coke,. ..1500 " Total,..4500 " Old Bed ore,........ 3750 " New Bed fine ore,. ..2000. " New Bed chunk ore,. .. 1000 " Kearnev hematite ore,.750 " Total,..... 7500 " Magnesian limestone,. 1665 " Common limestone,. ...835 " Total,........ 2500 " The production per week since making mill iron-—from September 1st, 1879, to date, seven weeks—was 412 gross tons. Ore was not immediately taken off, as nothing serious was looked for. The iron for the next week graded from No. 4 to white, and in six days the make was 2741/2 tons. At 10 p.m., Friday, the 28th, a slip of -14 feet occurred, and on Saturday, at 5 A.M., another of 3 feet on the south side and 7 feet on the north side took place. At this time it was found that the south side had been hanging for over a week—a fact which had not been reported. Throwing off the wind, to produce slips and reduce pressure, had been tried with no effect. The stock, as seen through the tuyeres, seemed to consist almost entirely of coal, with just enough infusible cinder to cement it into a mass through which the blast could not be forced. At 3.50 A.M., Sunday, the 30th, the first cinder seen in seventeen hours came into tuyeres Nos. 1, 2, 3, and 6. At 9.30 A.M. No. 3 was taken out to see if the stock

INTRODUCTION The purpose of this paper is to summarize the current status of reagents used in the mineral industry plus present some current challenges and possible new technologies of the future. Table 1 lists the important families of reagents which, when taken together, constitute at least 95% of the current commercial reagent market. A very approximate estimate of the free world reagent market size in mineral applications is about 1.5 to 2.0 billion dollars (U.S.) using 1985 data. Obviously, to serve such a large market requires the effort of many different types of commercial supply sources. It is estimated that there are over 300 industrial firms in the free world that have a dedicated business/technical structure for supplying reagents related to the mining industry. There are a number of characteristics which are associated with the product families listed in Table 1. Understanding these characteristics helps to provide a realistic economic/technical basis for outlining future challenges in mining chemicals. 1.Essentially all of the products listed are old chemistry in the sense that the molecules have been known and manufactured for at least 25 years. This has not been a highly dynamic field of endeavor from the viewpoint of new product introduction. 2. The greater majority of the products listed can be viewed in commercial terms as "commodity" chemicals, that is, they are available from many sources and the pricing of a some- what generic product generally dominates differences in product quality or uniqueness. With commodity pricing, reagent suppliers significantly reduce research expenditures, loosen product quality somewhat if the applications of the reagents allow, etc. in order to be cost competitive.

A program of surveying and studying the surficial sediments of northern Juan de Fuca Strait was undertaken between 1988 and 199 1. Detrital sediments were mapped from the intertidal zone down to 100 m depth along the slopes of a series of shallow coastal marine terraces. The sand heavy mineral content was examined over this region and sediment geochemistry and assays were performed on selected samples both offshore and from beaches along the coast. The coastline of southwestern Vancouver Island has numerous streams, with a history of small Au placer extraction, which empty into the strait to the south. Only very minor evidence of this was seen in values from isolated locales. However, one beach presented a remarkably different mineralogy and geochemistry from the remainder of the coastline. From the beach to 800 meters offshore heavy mineral contents were greatly elevated and Ti values were as high as 1.4% of the sand fraction. Minerals were relatively fresh and angular, with mineral percents distinctly different than those found elsewhere along this coastline. No stream of substantial size crosses this largely sandy-gravel beach. A series of studies identified the source of this small marine placer as having its origins n the tailings from a submarine pipe broken short in the next bay. A Cu-Au mine 1.5 km upstream, closed by the mid 1970's, had processed its ore underground and piped the crushed tailings to the submarine discharge pipe. The crushed material has been transported and concentrated with the longshore current and been sorted by strong coastal swells. Ilmenite/titanomagnetite from the homblendized basalt of the mine is the source of the Ti enrichment.

"Caterpillar has developed the Cat GH800B longwall plow system, designed for mining very low coal seams at high rates. Building on the attributes of the proven GH1600 plow system, the Caterpillar longwall team in Lünen, Germany, worked with the German Ibbenbüren Mine to design and construct a system for mining an anthracite seam averaging only 0.85 m (33.5 in.) thick. The result is the GH800B plow and associated longwall system, which is now operating in the Ibbenbüren Mine - where the seam does not exceed 1 m (39 in.) in height.The Cat GH800 plow, with an installed power of 2 x 400 kW, has been the plow of choice for seam heights from 0.9 to 2 m (35 to 78 in.), regardless of seam inclination or coal hardness. But the lower the coal seam, the more difficult the extraction process. Flexibility, reliability, efficiency and serviceability of the whole system had to be refined for maximum productivity in such a minimal height, but several key modifications led to success.The armored face conveyor (AFC) modifications for the GH800B plow system include PF4 plow line pans with a replaceable top trough and a new plow guide made of a one-piece casting to provide extra strength and durability while being lower in height than the previous welded version. External dogbone connectors between the line pans and a strong and flexible relay bar between the AFC and the roof supports (shields) further adapt the conveyor for very low seam operation. To increase coal throughput, the engineering team widened the conveyor crosssection with extended side plates."
