Cyprus Shoshone is an underground coal mine in southern Wyoming owned by Cyprus Coal Company, a subsidiary of Cyprus Minerals Company. To date, seven longwall panels have been extracted from the pitching seam under increasing depth of cover from 150 ft to 1200 ft. The purpose of this paper is to describe the geology, rock mechanics needs identification, design, testing and successful application of the current headgate/tailgate cribbing system. The immediate roof of the Shoshone is unique in that the first 50 ft of lithology is interbedded mudstones. The mudstone is slickensided, highly friable and has characteristics of unconsolidated fill relative to self-spanning and beaming abilities. Finite element modelling analysis of the overall geomechanical environment showed the mudstone to yield under applied longwall abutment stress. Roof bolt system design methodology also pinpointed the relative weakness of the mudstone roof. In-mine entry vertical convergence and weight response from the mudstone identified the need to design a crib which had superior weight capacity over a wide range of convergence. Design of a structure ensued to achieve the superior strength properties of wood parallel to the grain and the displacement properties of wood perpendicular to the grain. Testing of the prototype structure along with other alternative wooden cribs was done at the U.S. Bureau of Reclamation facility in the Denver Federal Center, Colorado. The test results verified the design. Crib placement pattern was chosen to maximize support with a confined core crib under the high convergence area. The design has been successfully installed in over 5,000 ft of headgate entry in the 11 left panel.

THERE are few industrial and metallurgieal processes which do not require the application of heat energy, and the modern demand for increased working efficiency has resulted in attention being paid to temperature control as a means of ensuring fuel economy and more efficient plant operation. In general, mill accuracy required is not very contant in laboratory work, and few industrial operations are controlled to within less than 5° while in many cases greater limits are allowable. Almost every thermal property of matter has been suggested as a basis for the construction of pyrometers, but the thermo-electric type finds by far the widest application, and hence this paper will deal only with the principles, construction, and uses of this type of instrument. THERMOELECTRIC PYROMETRY.In the year 1821 Seebeek discovered that if the ends of two dissimilar metal wires were joined and one junction heated, a current flowed in the circuit, and the KMF (electro-motion force) set up could be measured by inserting a galvanometer at the cold junction. The phenomenon was not thoroughly investigated for many years, but, as the demand for high-temperature thermometers increased, several investigators, of whom Le Chatelier was one of the pioneers, successfully endeavoured to utilize the principle in pnometric construction. The couples which gave the most satisfactory results were discovered, improvements were made in material and design and the present-day type of instrument gradually evolved. The apparatus consists of three main parts, viz. (1) The thermo-couple itself of two dissimilar metal or alloy wires together at one end. (2) The leads which connect the terminal of the thermo-couple with the measuring instrument.

THE separation of hematite by hysteretic repulsion was first brought to the attention of the public in 1922, by W. M. Mordey1. Three years later another paper2 was published and after another four years a third paper3 appeared in the South African publications. Certain data were lacking in these papers. In order to continue the work intelligently a knowledge of the shapes of the hysteresis curves for certain minerals was very necessary. This information was not available until the present year4. It was known that reduction of certain ores rendered them amenable to this process of separation but definite data in the form of curves showing exactly the effect of such treatment were lacking. Probably our best source of information on the separation of minerals by the use of alternating-current magnetic fields today is the reports from the U. S. Bureau of Mines5-7. It is not the purpose of this paper to tell the reader in detail how to make a commercial separator. Experimental models have recently been made7 and the results obtained have been so good that it is the opinion of the authors that the public will soon take an active interest in the subject and its development. The writers have constructed a separator that is considerably different in construction and operation from the two types described by Mr. Davis. This will be described, but the real purpose of this paper is to outline certain experiments and give curves showing data that have a fundamental bearing upon the practical construction of a separator of this type.

The trend toward utilization of low grade iron ores means that more efficient methods must be developed for their concentration. The collecting ability of fatty acids derived from fish oils has been extensively investigated by Cooke.' Tuna oil, a byproduct of the tuna canning industry, is one of the lower priced fish oils. Utilization of tuna oil fatty acids as collectors in the flotation of iron ore might be economically feasible under certain market conditions, especially if their efficiency were high. Crude or unfractionated tuna oil fatty acids, and five fractions derived therefrom, were tested for their ability to concentrate a commercial specularite ore from northern Michigan. A commercial fatty acid derived from tall oil, and commonly used in nonsulfide flotation, was used as a reference. The crude fatty acids were obtained by simple saponification of tuna oil. Fractions A and B were obtained by acetone precipitation of the crude acids at -5O and -2S°C, respectively. Fraction C was obtained by a partial fractional distillation at 12S°C and at a pressure of 3y in a centrifugal molecular still in order to remove the shortest and longest chain fatty acids of tuna oil as well as oxidation products present in the original mixture. Fractions D and E were prepared by a chilling process in order to precipitate the unwanted saturated fatty acids. During the two years in which the new reduction-works of the Copper Queen Consolidated Mining Co. have been in operation at Douglas, Ariz., there has developed a remarkable condition in regard to the corrosive action of the water used to cool the jackets of the blast-furnaces. Were it not for the many contradictory features, it might pass as one of the unavoidable troubles due to the composition of the water. This water, obtained from wells 600 ft. deep, is also used in the steam-boilers, and its composition, as shown by the following analysis, does not indicate the presence of any ingredient which would explain the corrosion: Grains Per U. In from 10 to 12 months the inner plates have been reduced by corrosion to a thickness of from + to & in., while the outer plate in the same time is reduced by less than 1/16 in., and the stiffeners show very little corrosion. The plates are pitted and eaten away in some places more than in others. There is practically no scale found on the jackets, but when cleaned considerable iron oxide is found in the bottoms. Prealloyed powders of nickel-base superalloys were sintered to almost theoretical density in short sinterilzg times. It was ascertained that the rapid densification was caused by a small amount of liquid phase at the grain boundaries, which apparently ovriginated by incipient melting at temperatures considerably below those at which macroscopic melting of the compacts occurred. An increase in the quantity of liquid phase present during sintering-, caused by an increase in the sintering temperature, increased the densification rate, but resulted in a decrease in the room temperature tensile propevties. NICKEL-base superalloys, which presently comprise an important group of high temperature alloys, are difficult to fabricate by the forging, casting, and machining operations presently used. As it was felt that fabrication by powder metallurgical techniques might offer advantages in the production of super-alloy parts, a basic investigation of the most important process in the sequence of powder metallurgical operations, the sintering process, was undertaken on Rene 41, Udirnet 500, and Nimonic 90 and 100 powders. These alloys age harden by the precipitation of the ? Ni, rA1,Ti) phase. Nickel-base superalloys of the Nimonic type have been fabricated by powder metallurgical methods, and their mechanical properties reported in detail.' SHARPNESS of separation and washing efficiency are often confused. The sharpness index indicates the precision of a washing unit; the washing efficiency takes into account not only the unit's precision but also the washability characteristics of raw coal and the near-gravity materials at the effective density of cut. A sound basis for evaluating the sharpness index is essential in comparing the sharpness of separation attained by different cleaning units. Sharpness Index and Related Criteria: Washing plant sharpness of separation has been well represented by Hancock's efficiency chart and Tromp's curve of migrated materials. Some useful coefficients derived from Tromp's curve-the error area, probable error, and imperfection value-have been widely used to measure sharpness of separation. These are defined in a number of papers presented at the first and second International Coal Preparation Conference held in Paris (1950) and Essen (1954).1-5 In evaluating the performance of a dense medium separator at four different gravities, Yancey and Greer6 observed that even with similar operating conditions and the same size grading of feed, the imperfection value of a washing plant varies through a greater range than the probable error. The present writer also observed the same type of anomalies in comparing the imperfection values of one plant which were determined under almost identical conditions. He therefore devised a graphical method to evaluate a washing unit's sharpness of separation and define it by a single coefficient, which is substantially independent of coal characteristics under normal operation of the unit. Unlike imperfection value, the new coefficient can be expressed on a percentage basis.

"In this paper the simulated acid magenta dye discoloring the reaction process was researched. The results showed that it attained highest decolorization efficiency for acidic magenta simulation dye wastewater when pH 9 and reaction time 10 min. With the initial dye wastewater concentration increased, the decolored rate decreased. The decolored rate in general kept a tendency to increase with the temperature increased. Kinetics researches showed that when pH 9, reaction temperature 20 and 35 ?, the decoloring reaction process for the dyes accorded with the First-order dynamic equation. The decoloring reaction rate constant was influenced by initial concentration of dye wastewater and temperature.1. IntroductionIn China, textile printing and dyeing industry is one of industrial departments which using more water and discharging more wastewater. There is about 7 billion tons of waste water discharge each year, of which 80% from the process of printing and dyeing. Being complex ingredients, high chroma, more toxic substances and severe environment pollution, the treatment of printing and dyeing wastewater becomes problem urgent to be resolved. The traditional treatment methods such as adsorption [1], coagulation [2], biochemical method [3,4], which has advantages of simple equipment, simple operation and mature process, but they can cause waste accumulation and secondary pollution [5,6].Magenta is a kind of organic compounds, which classified into acid and alkaline magenta. A computer model of an existing mine ventilation system can be executed using data developed from ventilation survey results. This model can then be used to analyze and evaluate proposed modifications to the system. The acquisition of field measurements during a ventilation survey and the corresponding development of this information into computer input data have been discussed in detail in the preceding chapters. In this chapter, the data are used in computer-oriented analysis of the mine ventilation system. The PSU/MVS was selected for use because of its advanced capabilities. MINE DESCRIPTION The mine chosen for this application is located in Western Pennsylvania. The Pittsburgh coal seam, having an average height of 5-1/4 to 6-1/2 ft, is mined under approximately 300 to 500 ft of cover. The mine preparation plant and shipping facilities are located at the seam outcrop along a river; mining has progressed from the outcrop to an area about 10 miles from the pit mouth so that there are extensive worked-out areas through which access is maintained to the current mining area. Coal haulage is by conveyor to an underground transfer point, located four miles from the pit mouth, and then by high speed rail haulage to the preparation plant. The rail haulage link is scheduled for replacement by a conveyor in the near future. Mining at the present time is limited to the room and pillar method using continuous miners. Longwall mining had been attempted in the past with only limited success; as a result, several panels originally laid out for longwall mining are currently being extracted by room and pillar work. The Rio Capim kaolin district, located in the north-east of Parß State, Brazil, constitutes one of the worldÆs largest high-whiteness kaolin reserves for the paper coating industry. It contains, at the base of the main ore, a soft kaolin that gradually changes at the top into a ferruginous duricrust followed by a flint kaolin. The flint kaolin is completely discarded during the exploitation of the soft kaolin. With the view of a more complete beneficiation, aiming at a sustainable development of the minerals industry, the use of this residual flint kaolin has been considered for the manufacturing of zeolites. Zeolites were synthesised from the flint kaolin through a reaction between metakaolinite with soda at 80¦C, for durations of 24 to 144 hours. The transformation into metakaolinite was carried out at 800¦C and was not affected by the titanium oxides. For a synthesis time of only 24 hours, a zeolite 4A very close to its theoretical definition was obtained, whereas for synthesis times longer than 96 hours, a slight formation of hydro-sodalite was also observed. The synthesised zeolites were tested as cationic adsorbents on 0.5 molar solutions of Cu, Pb, Cd and Zn. The adsorption was measured for contact durations of one and three days. It was noted that the exchange kinetics were slow and that the retention was significantly greater after three days than after one day. The retention was greater than 50 per cent of the theoretical exchange capacity for Pb, Cd and Zn, which was different to Cu, where the retention exceeded its theoretical exchange capacity.

O aço API 5L X60 é empregado na fabricação de dutos submarinos para a produção de óleo e gás. Com a ajuda de métodos de inspeção e estudos de mecânica da fratura é possível avaliar a severidade dos defeitos existentes, prever a falha dos componentes e tomar as devidas providências para evitar acidentes que podem levar a danos ambientais, perda de vidas e prejuízos financeiros. Com foco na redução do efeito do histórico de carregamento, avalia-se uma técnica alternativa de pré-trincamento por fadiga para a obtenção das curvas de crescimento de trinca por fadiga. Esta técnica permite a nucleação de trincas em carregamento cíclico compressivo, isentas de tensões residuais compressivas, que mascaram os resultados na determinação do limiar de propagação de trincas. Neste trabalho, foram utilizados corpos de prova do tipo C(T) para a nucleação das pré-trincas de fadiga. Foi avaliada a influência das características do carregamento, como o nível da força aplicada e a razão de carregamento no comprimento de saturação das trincas produzidas, a fim de se obter avanços no estabelecimento dessa metodologia. Com um carregamento mais intenso, o comprimento de saturação de trinca foi maior. Além disso, a diferença de comprimento entre o centro e as superfícies do corpo de prova se torna mais acentuada. O comprimento de saturação de trinca é menor que o raio da zona plástica e maior que a região máxima governada por tensões residuais trativas. Para carregamentos menos severos, a trinca cresce de maneira mais uniforme e alcança comprimentos de saturação de trinca menores. A razão de carregamento não interfere significativamente no comprimento de saturação de trinca.

A new kind of mixed chelate collector was prepared in order to separate gangue (mainly quartz) and iron minerals efficiently during room temperature. The collector was was composed of two chelate collectors DES and DA. Floatation tests were carried out under 28?C with mixed magnetic concentrates of Donganshan sintering plant, and optimal test conditions were obtained, in which a direct floatation was undertaken and then a close circuit reverse floatation tests ( one roughing, one cleaning, and two scavenging), and a result of Fe grade of siderite concentrate 36.49%, Fe recovery of siderite concentrate 10.65%, Fe grade of final concentrate 66.27%, Fe recovery of final concentrate 78.25%, and Fe grade of tailing 16.22% was gained. Fourier Transform Infrared (FTIR) Spectra and Zeta potential of siderite and quartz adsorbed the DES and DA collectors before and after were measured in order to analyze the reaction between the collector and minerals. Furthermore, Molecule electronegativity of DES and DA was calculated by Electronegativity Proportionality Principle (EPP). Results showed that DES molecules have five active adsorbing sites and their molecule electronegativity was stronger while DA molecules have three active adsorbing sites, which all make the mixed collector has efficiently collecting performance. Zeta potential results of Quartz and siderite showed that at pH 11.5 both kinds of particles charged negative and at this pH value the mixed collector were mainly anionic collectors which indicate that electrostatic adsorption does not exist at this situation. FTIR results showed that characteristic peaks of the mixed collector changed before and after adsorption with the minerals, which means that there exists chemical adsorption or hydrogen bonding.

Ambientes contendo H2S e CO2 impõem condições severas a componentes fabricados em aços, já que estes podem sofrer corrosão com perda de propriedades mecânicas e falha das instalações. Uma preocupação é a quantificação dos fenômenos envolvendo difusão do hidrogênio atômico, o qual (seja pelo gás H2 em interfaces ou pela interação com ligações atômicas ou discordâncias) pode causar redução nas energias superficiais de fraturamento prejudicando ductilidade e tenacidade. Neste cenário, este trabalho investiga a fragilização por hidrogênio em um aço microligado API 5L X65 sour obtido de um tubo de diâmetro externo 32” e espessura de parede 20,6 mm fabricado pelo processo UOE. Amostras longitudinais e transversais de tração (ASTM E8/E8M) foram extraídas e imersas em solução saturada com H2S. O eletrólito empregado foi a solução A (ácido acético contendo cloreto de sódio) da norma NACE TM0284-2011, fazendo-se purga com N2 e injeções de H2S. Os tempos de imersão foram de 0, 96 e 360 horas, sendo os ensaios de tração realizados após doze dias do término da imersão. Os resultados não revelaram efeito estatisticamente relevante na resistência mecânica, na evolução tensão-deformação e tampouco no módulo de tenacidade. Entretanto, foi observado maior espalhamento dos resultados advindos de amostras submetidas a H2S. Esse comportamento sugere que o hidrogênio influenciou no micromecanismo local de fraturamento, mas com inexpressivo comprometimento das propriedades monotônicas macroscópicas. Tal desempenho pode ser fruto da microestrutura com grãos refinados e do baixo nível de inclusões encontrado, indicando poucos e uniformes sítios de ancoramento de hidrogênio irreversível.

At the Nikkel og Olivin nickel mine near Narvik, Norway, Outokumpu has been the operator since 1993. The mine was opened in 1989 and in 1992 Outokumpu commenced operations to secure concentrate deliveries to Harjavalta's nickel smelter in Finland. Annual production is about 740 000 tonnes of nickel ore grading 0.5 per cent Ni, about 25 000 tonnes of nickel concentrate and about 2800 tonnes of nickel metal. All production comes from underground operations which makes Nikkel og Olivin AS perhaps the lowest grade underground nickel mine in the world today. Production is currently from one of two orebodies, which is known as the Western orebody. The Eastern orebody was worked out by 1995. During Outokumpu's operational period the Western orebody has been delineated and taken to production. The underground exploration and definition drilling involved about 15 000 in of diamond drilling, which was carried out during a nine-month period. Following this a feasibility study was undertaken and production commenced. Improvements were made to the mining methods. Previously the mine utilised open pit equipment underground and this resulted in an enormous amount of additional tunnelling. Grade control and ore delineation were previously based on sparse diamond drilling and all geological information was processed manually. The improvements included the use of underground sludge drilling to increase the amount of geological information, the of a new computer system for grade control and mine planning, new automated underground longhole drilling equipment and the of underground mining equipment which reduced the size of the drives. These changes produced a marked increase in the efficiency of the underground Mine.

IRWIN W. ALCORN, present Chairman of the Petroleum Division, was born Sept. 5, 1899 at Marietta, Ohio, and moved with his family to Robinson, Ill., at the time of the early oil development there. This was in the days of the Star spudders, mud, mules, and Stanley steamers. Al graduated from Robinson High School after participation in basket ball, also attaining the captaincy of the football team of that school. He entered Missouri School of Mines and Metallurgy in 1918 and was ushered by the Army into the S.A.T.C. In 1920 he transferred to the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, later to return to receive his B.S. degree -in metallurgy at Rolla, also joining the AIME. On graduation, he worked for the Skelly Oil Co. at Cushing, Okla., shifting to the Moore Refining Co. at DeNoya, Okla., as superintendent of a small pipe-line system. After an interval of two years with the National Supply Co. in Tulsa, he joined the Independent Oil and Gas Co. of that city, and at various times was chief engineer of the Texas division, superintendent of the West Texas pipe-line system, chief engineer of pipe-line construction, and chief engineer of the refining division. Al organized the Company's production engineering department. In 1930 the Company was merged with the Phillips Petroleum Co. The depression was in and Al was out, 'as was true nine months later when the Smith Separator Co. whose chief engineer he had become, was liquidated. A phase diagram showing boundary curve and quantity of liquid in the two-phase region was determined for a mixture of natural gas and natural gasoline in the region of its critical conditions. The temperatures and pressures of phase measurements were in the range of 85 to 212 F. and 1300 to 2600 Ib. per sq. in., respectively, with the critical conditions at 169.5 F. and 2615 Ib. per sq. in. abs. Color phenomena were observed in the region of the boundary curve from 102' to 192 F. Approximate densities of the single-phase and two-phase regions and analysis of the system are included. Boundary curves between the single-phase and the two-phase regions have been determined for several binary mixtures containing hydrocarbons. 2,3,4.6,7,10,11,12,14 These investigators did not report the relative amounts of liquid and vapor within the two-phase region. The equilibrium values obtained from the dew-point and bubble-point data can be used to compute the lines showing percentage of liquid on the pressure-temperature phase diagram8 but the positions of the lines near the critical temperature and pressure are uncertain. Relative amounts of vapor and liquid were obtained for a gasoline and a naphtha1 within the two-phase area but not in the region of the critical temperature and pressure. The bubble-point and dew-point lines, as well as the percentage liquid lines within the two-phase region, were determined by visual observations in glass apparatus. A continuously recording seismic network was constructed in 1962 by the U.S. Geological Survey to locate epicenters and record incidence of bumps (bounces, rock bursts) that occur in the bituminous coal mines of the Book Cliffs coal field near Sunny-side, Utah. The coal is mined because of its value as coking coal, although these bumps may be a hazard to life and property. Daily records of tremors caused by bumps for 1 3/4 years indicate that a seasonal pattern, as well as a daily pattern, exists for the number of bumps that occur in a given period. Maxima occur in May and June and November and December. Marked increases at 5-day to 9-day intervals are superimposed on these seasonal maxima. The largest bumps commonly occur during seasonal maxima when the rate of occurrence suddenly decreases and the amplitude of the individual bumps increases. Knowledge of this pattern may lead to prediction of general locations and periods of increased hazard from bumps. Experience to date has shown that prediction of precise times and locations of hazardous bumps is not possible, and may never be; primarily because even a small bump can be a hazard to life and property. Some bumps or bump sequences are actually composites, consisting or two or more discrete bumps a few tenths of a second to a few seconds apart. Violent and spontaneous releases of coal and rock from faces, ribs and roofs of mines (termed bumps or bounces by miners) are a common hazard to life and property in the coal mines located in the Book Cliffs near Sunnyside, Utah (Fig. 1). Relative amounts of vapor and liquid were obtained for a gasoline and a naphtha1 within the two-phase area but not in the region of the critical temperature and pressure. "Istanbul Strait Road Tube Crossing Project (Eurasia Tunnel) includes 3.34 km of a bored double-deck tunnel under the Bosphorus Strait, at a maximum depth of 106 m from the sea level, and 1 km of twin NATM tunnels on the Asian side. The region’s variable geology, hydrology and propensity for seismic activity, combined with high water pressure and large-diameter/double-deck tunnel configuration, make the Eurasia Tunnel one of today’s most challenging and complex projects under construction. Due to the site’s proximity to the active North Anatolian Fault, the tunnel is designed to withstand a 7.5 magnitude earthquake. The tunnel penetrates through both the Trakya bedrock (on both European and Asian sides) and the alluvial sediments at the bottom of the channel. The tunnel is designed to accommodate differential displacements by introducing seismic/flexible joints at proper locations at the transition zones between rock and soft soils. Tunnel fire is also a significant design consideration for undersea tunnel due to that the rubber protecting it in close proximity of the seismic joint should resist a fire for long term safety and durability. This paper mainly focuses on the design for method of tunnel response analysis in transverse and longitudinal direction against seismic demands relating with the seismic joints. They extend for over a mile along the strike of the Hollinger-McIntyre 'break'. The property has been explored extensively along the ore zone both laterally and vertically. Workings have been carried to a depth of 5,500 feet, and nearly 50 miles of lateral workings (drifting and cross-cutting) have been driven to date in development and in gaining access to the orebodies.Production started at the Coniaurum in June 1928 and has continued without interruption.
