(Butte Meeting, August, 1913.) IN a discussion -of a paper on " The Basic Process as Applied to Copper Smelting," by Percy C. Gilchrist, read before the Society of Chemical Industry, London, Jan. 5, 1S91,1 Prof. W. C. Roberts Austen asked Mr. Gilchrist whether he thought that the substitution of a basic lining for acid lining in the Marshes process would afford anything like the service which it had been shown to render in the metallurgy, of iron. Claude Vautin stated that he had experimented for over two years with basic linings for Bessemer converters for copper mattes at Cobar, but had given up the attempt on the score of cost. Mr. Gilchrist in his reply stated that he did not believe in applying any system of Bessemerizing to copper. About the time of the presentation of the paper mentioned, Herman Keller, Superintendent of the Parrott smelter, in Butte, was experimenting on a large scale with converters lined with magnesite brick. He gave up the idea on account of the cost of linings and because no particular advantage was observed. My belief is that his tuyeres and converters were -too small. A short time; afterward similar experiments were tried at the Great Falls plant of the Boston & Montana Co., said at the Old Works of the Anaconda Copper Mining Co. in Anaconda. These were abandoned on the score of cost and the lack of advantages. The same cause of failure, in my opinion, holds here. The Anaconda Copper Mining Co., however, adopted the magnesite brick lining for its tilting casting machines.

Over a 4 hr period of steady plant operation samples were taken at regular intervals from points within the grinding and flotation circuits. Size fractions of each composite sample were analysed for lead and zinc values and a comparison made of the behaviour of the lead, zinc, and gangue minerals, size by size throughout the whole circuit.Analysis of the breakage behaviour using dynamic mathematical models gave the rates of breakage of each size fraction of each main component. Simulated grinding experiments showed that the main grinding circuit had some reserve capacity.In the lead flotation circuit all lead values between 150 mesh (Tyler) and 5 microns had excellent flotation characteristics, and a major proportion had a high rate of flotation which was practically the same for all sizes. Increase in overall lead recovery would require improvement of the flotation behaviour of ultra-fine lead minerals. These were slow floating and were responsible for approximately half the lead losses in the final zinc concentrate and one-third of the lead losses in the final tails.All sizes of zinc values between 100 mesh and 7 microns floated well and the performance of the zinc flotation circuit was mainly limited by the relatively poor flotation of the very fine zinc values. Approximately 60 per cent of the zinc lost to the final tails lay within the minus 7 micron fraction.The overall flotation conditions were conducive to very good selective flotation of the major proportion of the values and limitations in metallurgical performance were mainly due to the properties of the ultra-fines.

After a good year in 1979-strong mineral demand, adequate prices for most metals, minimal labor problems-1980 was not so good. The US produced $24.8 billion worth of nonfuel minerals last year, up 3.5% from 1979, according to preliminary US Bureau of Mines figures. But the $800 million increase was the smallest annual gain since 1977 and reflected reduced auto and construction industry demand, strikes, and energy shortages. Preliminary figures for 68 minerals show that production of 42 decreased, 25 increased, and one was unchanged. Production of 11 of 21 US-produced minerals was up. Noteworthy mineral events in 1980 included a copper industry strike, increased gold and silver prices, troubles in the iron ore and uranium industries, discussion about a US nonfuels mineral policy, and corporate interest in mining companies as merger targets. Recessionary conditions experienced by the Western world in 1980 resulted in a slowdown in new mine development, evident in the relative scarcity of major new base metal projects. This could lead to short term supply/demand anomalies within the next few years which, in turn, could have a significant effect on metal prices, according to Mining Magazine (Jan. 1981). World Mining (Sept. 1980) noted that US mining strength is in open pit operations. A much lower tonnage is mined underground and is centralized in trona, uranium, lead, zinc, molybdenum, potash and, to a lesser extent, copper. The most notable increase in new underground mines has been in Wyoming's trona district where new mines are being developed and production will increase, the magazine said.

Gravity separation techniques were used in the early years to extract native metal nuggets and flakes from placer gold deposits. This was relatively easy for visible metal grains. As the size of the grain becomes smaller traditional gravity separation techniques become inadequate to recover native gold. Cyanidation was invented as a solution to the problem. According to it, gold and other precious metals are dissolved in water by sodium cyanide. The result was a drastic increase of world gold production but at the same time environmental issues were raised. In Greece gold mining has become equivalent with the absolute destruction of the environment and is under extinction. In the last years a new type of gravity equipment have been produced which create a gravitational field up to 200 G and can separate gold from gangue minerals at sizes below 50 µm. The strong gravitational field is created by centrifugal forces and the separation occurs in a fluidized bed, formed by water flow. Accumulations of finely disseminated native gold are found in the sedimentary sequence of the Flysch of the Ionian Zone. The main gold minerals are gold and electrum present as free metal flakes and micro nuggets in the size range between 5-250 µm. Test work, using the Falcon SB40 centrifugal concentrator, at the Department of Mineral Resources Engineering at the Technical University of Crete, has shown that this particular type of gold ore can be processed by gravitational methods that require no reagents and are environmentally safe.

Some attempt to minimise the importance of the greenhouse phenomenon. They do so by observing that global temperatures are still within the range of recent variations and that it is still not possible to predict with any certainty what the precise consequences of greenhouse will be. Both observations are true though the conclusion is dangerous. Ice core samples from the Antarctic and Greenland have established the composition of the atmosphere and global temperature over almost the last 200,000 years. The profile of these twin variables shows that they have moved together; when the concentration of CO2 has been up, the temperature has been up and when the former has been down the temperature has also been down. Over almost 200,000 years the CO2 content has ranged between lows of 190 ppm and highs of 270ppm. In just 200 years of industrialisation the CO2 content of the atmosphere has increased to 350 ppm, 50% higher that the mean of the last 200,000 years and 30% higher than at the start of the industrial age. Carbon dioxide is now increasing at 0.5% p.a. Methane, about twenty times more effective than CO2 as a greenhouse gas has doubled in concentration in the last two centuries and is now increasing at about 1.1% p.a. Methane, nitrous oxide, chlorofluorocarbons together with a number of lesser gases will double the greenhouse effect due to in creased CO2 over the next 40-50 years.

Probably the largest single tungsten deposit in the U. S. is one that has yet to produce any tungsten; it is not even listed in tables showing U. S. reserves. This deposit is at Searles Lake, Calif., where the brine contains about 70 ppm WO3. Small though the concentration is, the amount of brine in the lake is so great that it is estimated at 170 million lb of WO3 (8.5 million units), equaling the total of all other known reserves in the U. S. This dry lake is located in the basin formed by the Argus and Slate ranges in the northeastern corner of the Mojave Desert (Fig. 1). It consists of a massive salt body some 35 sq miles in extent, varying in thickness from 0 to 120 ft and containing more than 3 billion tons of salt. A central section of about L. G. CARPENTER and D. Except for the exposed sodium chloride (10 to 15 ft thick) the body consists of a very complex and heterogenous mixture of soluble crystals, containing at least eight major phases. It is only about 53 pct solid, the voids being occupied by a dense brine which is the raw material for two chemical companies operating in the valley.

A group of prominent engineers and contractors of Chicago and vicinity have cooperated in forming a Joint Committee on Military Engineering. The founders are members of all of the leading engineering and contracting organizations of Chicago, including the local branches of the national engineering societies. The purposes of the Committee are to further military preparedness among engineers, contractors and their associates by the following means: (1) Courses of lectures; (2) assigned reading; (3) studies and practical instruction in military engineering;. (4) assisting engineers to qualify as officers in the National Reserve Corps of Civilian Engineers; (5) urging enlistment in and support for engineer troops of the National Guard and such other organizations as the Government may create; (6) furthering instruction in military engineering in training camps and the attendance in them of those qualified; (7) by such other means as from time to time may be deemed advisable. The Joint Committee has already prepared a program covering the vital points outlined. To date the program is practically complete for a period extending from April 20 to July 25. Something of interest will be taken up each week, including lectures by Lieutenant-Colonel W. B. Judson, Engineer Corps, U. S. Army; two lectures by Major P. S. Bond, Engineer Corps, U. S. Army; Lieutenant-Colonel Mason M. Patrick, Engineer Corps, U. S. Army, and several exhibition drills, terrain exercises and inspection trips under the direction and guidance of various officers of the Engineer Troops of the Illinois National Guard. Additions to the program will be made from time to time. '

Current Army tunnel destruction criteria (1) are based on limited nuclear-explosive (NE) and high-explosive (HE) test data. The PILE DRIVER (2) and HARDHAT (3) events investigated tunnel and support system response where yields were relatively large and tunnel diameter small compared to typical underground openings and localized stress fields of low yield weapons. Some limited tunnel destruction information was obtained from underground events of the PLUMBBOB and HARDTACK II Series (4). These events used access drifts which were designed to be self closing at the weapon point. The limited NE data are augmented by HE results from the Underground Explosion Test (UET) Program, a series of model and prototype-scale experiments in granite and sandstone (5). Weapon standoff distances (charge c.g. to tunnel wall) were at or near the maximum for major damage. Limited tunnel destruction was produced by a series of hasty and deliberate tests (6) on abandoned railroad tunnels in basalt. Additional HE data were obtained from model tests at the Waterways Experiment Station (WES) (7) using 2.1 MJ (2 lb) TNT charges and tunnel diameters varying from 3 to 17 cm (1.2 to 6.6 in). Recent laboratory scale HE experiments (8) conducted at the WES under the ESSEX program investigated the effects of tunnel diameter, standoff distance, charge confinement, material strength and to a limited extent, tunnel spacing and liner strength variations on tunnel damage. This paper summarizes the analysis conducted to develop predictions for the effects of low-yield nuclear weapons against tunnels and underground openings in rock.

Chile leads the world in copper production with an annual capacity nearing 2 Mt (2.2 million st). Most of the country’s copper production, about 74%, is mined by open-pit mining methods. Open-pit mining also accounts for a major portion of Chile’s production of other commodities, including iron, gold, silver and coal (Table 1). Chile’s mining boom began 10 years ago and is expected to continue through the end of the decade. From 1980 to 1990, copper production in Chile increased 48.7%. During the same period, gold production increased 303%, silver production increased 119% and coal and iron ore production increased 163.7% and 6.6%, respectively (Table 2). It is estimated that copper production will be in the order of 2.3 Mt (2.5 million st) by 1996, when new projects now under construction come onstream. Gold production could reach 35 t (1.1 million oz) and coal production could increase another 1 Mt/a (1.1 million stpy). Open-pit mining has played a significant role in Chile’s minerals production growth. The expected increases in mine operations will come about mainly through new open pits or expansions of existing surface operations (Table 3). However, the number of open-pit copper mines will decrease from 74% to 66% of the total number of Chilean mines. Gold mines will increase from 63% to 69% of the total, while coal mines will go from 41% to 59%. Most all of the present iron ore production is from surface mines and will continue that way.

An equation is derived describing fragment size for single fracture of brittle solids. It contains the equations of earlier workers as special or approximate cases and, in addition, is capable of describing coarse distributions in which a few large particles are produced on fracture. The equation can be fitted well to single fracture experiments where over-breakage is avoided. In 1956 Broadbent and callcottl described a method of analyzing the unit operation of grinding, applicable to homogeneous breakage of brittle materials. In essence, the grinding process was split into two parts: 1) the fractional amount of a given size which is selected for grinding per unit time, 2) the size-weight distribution of the fragments produced by breakage of this certain size (primary breakage distribution function). The theory was formulated using matrix algebra. They attempted an experimental verification of the theory using an assumed primary breakage distribution but the results were not very satisfactory. Austin and Gardner2 showed that this assumed distribution was widely different from experimental values and that it led to the poor agreement of predicted size-weight distributions with experiment found by Broadbent and Callcott. In addition, Austin and Gardner2,3,4 reformulated the original approach in terms of differential equations of grinding and demonstrated that the approach led to a very satisfactory description of the grinding process, providing that the descriptive parameters were measured experimentally. Recent work5 has substantiated these findings and the distribution functions of several materials ground under different conditions in different mills have been determined experimentally. "Compañía Minera Dona Inés de Collahuasi, CMDIC, has developed a methodology that allows estimating economic benefit taking into account the variability of the ore characteristics (geometallurgical models). Currently, the grinding model allows predicting the treatment capacity, specific power and balls consumption for short, mid and long term planning. An alternative impact test to estimate SAG grinding parameters is presented in order to bring the geometallurgical model from mid and long term to short term planning. The impact test uses either the production bench or geological drill holes. This allows Geologists increasing the density of grinding parameters within the block model improving the geostatistical estimation of the rest of the blocks. The test requires a small amount of sample to obtain the requires grinding parameters for the grinding model in comparison to the well known grinding test and also, it can be performed easily and quickly by the geology team of a mining company. The alternative grinding test is presented in this article. The grinding model using this short grinding test has been successfully used in mining planning and the accuracy of the model is demonstrated using monthly average instantaneous throughput from January 2013 to March 2014, showing an average relative error of 5% and an R2 value of 0.9. Also, 111 individual variability samples were divided into two each, in order to compare the estimated grinding parameters based on this alternative test to the grinding parameters obtained from the conventional grinding test. The comparison shows an average relative error of 4% and an R2 value of 0.9."

The phenomena of gas-molten metal reactions for the production of metal matrix composites consist typically of a combination of one or more gas transport steps and a liquid gas reaction step. Reaction products include such strength enhancers, grain refiners, or high thermal conductivity phases as TiC, AIN, SIC, Si3N4, TiN in aluminum alloys. Nitrides, carbides and oxides can be produced at various volume fractions and in fairly fine sizes (500 am to 5 um) in laboratory melts by Reactive Gas Injection method (RGI). Gas injection methodology to produce the reinforcements is attractive because it can potentially be scaled to production scales in excess of 10,000 kg/h. For continuous production, the reactant molten metal can be continuously fed into the .crucible where the reactive gas is injected. The molten metal phase reactant may also be involved in a controlling transport step, depending on its concentration and viscosity. It is well known that the reaction product reinforcement size and shape of these phases have significant impact on the physical, mechanical and thermal properties. The current state of knowledge is unable to predict the kinetics and growth of solid reaction products obtained. The primary goal is to develop a fundamental framework for the understanding and prediction of the particle size in such reaction systems. In addition, the role of gas transport, liquid hydrodynamics and decomposition are important issues. A reaction-transport model is being developed using a reaction, transport, and thermodynamic framework, both at macro and at atomistic level to assess gas - liquid interactions.

Hydrothermal activity is well known from many locations on most mid-ocean ridges, but no hydrothermally mineralized area had yet been found at the ultraslow spreading southwest Indian Ridge up to October 98 when the Japanese RV Yokosuka with the submersible Shinkai 6500 investigated this area. A massive sulfide field was discovered near 27°51S / 63°56E in the 11th segment west of the Rodriguez Triple Junction. The Free University of Berlin had joined this cruise and taken over the responsibility for the study of the respective sulfide mineralizations. Hydrothermal minerals were sampled during two dives at a water depth of 2940 m close to the summit of an axial volcanic ridge called Mount Jourdanne. Massive sulfides occur on the seafloor as small smooth mounds with an average area of about 5 m2. Their surfaces are weathered and have a reddish to brownish colour. In addition to these mound-like structures, small tube-like chimneys were observed; these chimneys rise approximately 30 to 40 cm above the floor and are less than 10 cm in diameter. No indications of hydrothermal fauna could be detected. All the hydrothermal features are spatially related to faults and smaller fissures controlled by an E-W trending graben system crossing the summit region of the submarine volcano. Such tectonized areas are generally considered to be ideal for hydrothermal activity because they may have both a magmatic heat source in the deeper underground as well as pathways for the fluid circulation.

Methane and hydrogen sulfide vent from a cold seep above a shallowly buried methane hydrate in a mud volcano located 24 km offshore of Los Angeles, California in 800 m water. Bivalves, authigenic calcite, and methane hydrate were recovered in a 2.1 m piston core. Aragonite shells of two bivalve species are unusually depleted in 13C (to -19? d13C), the most 13C-depleted shells of marine macrofauna yet discovered. Carbon isotopes for both living and dead specimens indicate that they used in part carbon derived from anaerobically oxidized methane (AOM) to construct their shells. Although the?d13C values are highly variable among specimens, most fall within the range -12 to -19?. This variability may be diagnostic for identifying cold-seep/hydrate systems in the geologic record. Authigenic calcite is abundant in the cores down to about 1.5 m subbottom, the methane hydrate horizon. The calcite is strongly depleted in 13C d13C = -46 to -58?) indicating that AOM was the main carbon source. Three sources of methane are likely: a geologic hydrocarbon reservoir, and biogenic and thermogenic degradation of organic matter in basin sediments. Oxygen isotopes indicate that most calcite formed out of isotopic equilibrium with ambient bottom-water, under the influence of gas hydrate dissociation and strong methane flux. High concentrations of Ag, Hg, Cd, Tl, and other elements in mud volcano sediment reflect leaching of basement rocks by fluids circulating along an underlying fault. Fossil (geologic) methane was likely transported with these fluids.

Minera PenmontÆs gold mine, La Herradura, is located at the northwestern Mexican state of Sonora and consists of an open pit mine and heap leaching facility for the recovery of gold. The production began in July 1998, and today La Herradura produces about 200 000 oz of gold per year. Standard sampling and assaying protocols were established during exploration based on heterogeneity tests. However, at deeper zones of the pit, coarse gold became evident and it was necessary to develop a new sampling protocol in order to minimise the fundamental error and improve the metallurgical accounting. This new sampling protocol requires cyanide leaching the whole pulverised sample from the blasthole, assaying pregnant solution and fire assaying 50 g of tailings. A sampling study was performed on 195 blasthole samples analysing gold under the standard and new protocols. The new protocol demonstrated that the original one underestimated gold grade by approximately 27 per cent, with impacts on ore misclassification and metallurgical accounting. According to the ore grade control system, mineral with gold grade above 0.35 g/t was sent to the leach pad and mineral with lower grade was classified as waste. Based on the sampling study, it was decided to classify a low-grade ore with gold assay between 0.20 and 0.35 g/t which was stored for future treatment under better gold prices or should mine production decrease. These two conditions were present during 2005 and 2006, when about 3.5 Mt of low-grade ore were leached.

"Smelter Feed Preparation Falconbridge Nickel Mines Limited, Sudbury Operations, operate 4 mills and a smelter to produce Bessemer Ni-Cu matte for refining in Norway. Approximately 1400 tons of Ni-Cu concentrate are produced daily which are dried from a filter cake containing 14% moisture to 7.5% moisture pellets. Concentrate drying is done by 4 rotary dryers as shown in the 'Dryer Performance Data' at four separate locations. The dryers all form part of the feed preparation stage prior to sintering.The rate at which concentrate can be produced through the Sinter Plant largely depends on the quality of the dried product which makes up the feed. A feed consisting of mostly hardened pellets will sinter much faster than a feed which consists of broken pellets and dust. Dryer products require:1. Good green strength to survive shipment and handling.2. Correct moisture content.3. Sizing within a range ideally from 1/4"" to 10 mesh in diameter.Dryer performance data is shown in Table 1. Capital costs between the two types of dryers are comparable with the Roto-Louvre producing generally a larger better-formed pellet. Dryer feeds differ in that at both Hardy and Fecunis, Ni-Cu concentrate filter cake is the only feed while at the Falconbridge slurry plant the dryer feed can consist of up to 10% by weight of smelter flue dust resulting in a combined concentrate-dust pellet for feeding to the Sinter Plant. To the Falconbridge Sinter Plant dryer, dust and limestone are added for the smelting process in addition to Ni-Cu concentrate."

Titanium tetrachloride may be reduced to trichloride with hydrogen on a hot tungsten filament and other hot: surfaces. The effect of temperature, time and size of t.he filament on the rate of reaction has been studied. A laboratory unit for preparing a few pounds of trichloride at a time is described. The yield of trichloride is 2·2 - 2·4 gm/sq. cm. of hot surface/hour at 1,000°C. and the energy requirement 3'5-4 kWh/pound of trichloride produced.'INTRODUCTIONThe lower chlorides of titanium (titanium tri- and dichlorides) are amenable to electrolysis, being electrovalent in nature. Furthermore, relative to other oxygen-free titanium salts, they are easy to prepare in a pure state and their use has been investigated to prepare titanium. The experimentaJ work described in this paper deals with the preparation of titanium trichloride by reduction of titanium tetrachloride with hydrogen on hot surfaces.REDUCING AGENTS FOR TITANIUM TETRACHLORIDEThe free energy diagram (Fig. 1) for the formation of chlorides suggests that titanium' tetrachloride may be reduced to trichloride by various reducing agents such as aluminium, zinc, arsenic, antimony, tin, mercury, silver, hydrogen, sodium, potassium and magnesium. The removal of sulfur from SO2 containing flue gas is improved by adsorbing SO2 into solution with manganese ions as catalyser, however, burnt lime slurry has to be added to modify solution pH and the CaSO3 by-product is of low economic value. In this paper a novel one step process for simultaneous manganese leaching-desulfurisation of flue gas is presented. An investigation of the effect of process parameters included flow rate and SO2 concentration in flue gas, adsorbing time, solution to solid mass ratio, leaching time, and their impact on the oxidation and removal of SO2 from flue gas. The catalysing mechanism of manganese ions on the oxidation and SO2 removal was demonstrated by calculation of the species originating from manganese ions and SO2 in the solution according to solution chemistry. SO2 removal in the adsorbing solution took place at pH 5 - 6, where manganese ions dominantly occurred as Mn2+, and the chain reactions for oxidation of SO2 starting from HSO3- were improved by the presence of Mn2+. SO2 bearing flue gas was effectively desulfurised by leaching rhodochrosite (MnCO3), with desulfurisation of the flue gas and modifying the solution pH being achieved simultaneously, and MnSO4 of high economic value recovered from the leachate. 85 per cent manganese leaching and over 70 per cent desulfurisation of the SO2-bearing flue gas were achieved with only one adsorption stage under optimum conditions.

A CLEAR understanding of the factors that deter-mine the consumption of zinc metal is essential to a proper survey of the future of the industry and the relation of the several producing districts. With a view of explaining a sound basis for the consider-ation of some of the problems facing the zinc-mining industry of the Oklahoma-Kansas and Missouri district some of these factors are here set out. The zinc industry of the United States furnishes metal for three major uses, viz.: (1) zinking iron and steel (galvanizing); (2) brass making; (3) sheet rolling. Other important uses are for lead desilverization, the manufacture of castings, including die castings, and the manufacture of zinc oxide by the French process, which consists in burning spelter. The use of zinc for galvanizing comprises the coating of sheets, tubes, wire and shaped products, the latter ranging from chains to buckets. The brass-making industry may be sub-divided into manufacture of red brass, yellow brass and white brass, the percentage of zinc in these products being roughly 30, 40 and 80 respectively. The use of white brass is relatively a new thing and it may attain considerable proportions as a substitute for yellow brass.
