"During the early part of the 1980s, four new surface coal mines commenced operation in the Province of British Columbia. Each represented a major investment in both persons and materials in order to protect this investment in one significant area-the fixed portion of the surface coal handling system-a substantial amount of work was undertaken to ensure that the system was well protected from an outbreak of fire. A great deal of effort in this field had already been made by those coal mines which had been in operation for a number of years and experience gained at these operations was utilized in determining the level and extent of fire protection for the new mines.This paper summarizes the major problems, and suggests some of the methods of solution, in providing an adequate degree of fire protection for surface coal handling systems. It will also discuss the potential for gas and dust explosions together with ways to minimize this potential.The Fixed Coal Handling SystemNote: The word ""fixed"" has been used in its present context to denote that part of the coal handling system where the coal is moved via fixed installations such as a conveyor. It differentiates from that part of the system where coal is moved by mobile equipment.The raw coal delivered to the truck dump will undergo two major processes on its way to the rail load out. The first will be at the coal preparation plant where coal of specified quality will be extracted from the raw feed to the plant. If this coal is of metallurgical quality, and sometimes if it is of thermal quality, it will pass through a thermal dryer where part of the moisture acquired during coal preparation will be removed, i.e. the second process. As the complexity of both the coal preparation plant and the thermal dryer is such as to warrant separate considerations they will not form part of this paper. Each of the processes, however, is generally, housed in its own building, thus, containment of any hazards is usually more attainable than those existing or caused in the rest of the system."

"Carbothermic reduction and nitridation reactions using synthetic kaolinite mineral were investigated for the formation of silicon based nitrogen ceramics. The temperature dependence of the reaction rate and its effect on phases formed are reported. The effect of the reactivity of carbon on the kinetics of formation of AIN and ShN4 is discussed. Using the standard Gibbs free energy values for the formation of nitrides and oxides of aluminium and silicon, a log po2 verses I/T diagram is constructed. The experimental data results are discussed and compared with the predicted phase equilibria. We also report the influence of sub-oxide gaseous species on the microstructure of the ceramic phases produced.IntroductionSynthetic kaolinite is a clay containing alumina, silica and water of crystallisation, and has a chemical formula 3(Al2O 3.2SiO2.2H2O). This mineral is relatively inexpensive and, is therefore an ideal candidate for use in the production of ceramic powder mixtures for example silicon nitride and aluminium nitride for composite material formation, When the mineral is heated, the water of crystallisation from the crystal lattice is lost via the 3(Al2O 3.2SiO2.2H2O) = 3(Al2O3.2SiO2) + 6H2O reaction. It has been shown [1·2j that on further heating to 1673K, the anhydrous kaolinite decomposes to a mixture of mulllte and silica, 3(Al2O3.2SiO2) = 3Al2O 3.2SiO2 + 4SiO2 which is consistent with the alumina-silica phase diagram, shown in figure 1.The binary alumina-silica phase diagram has a well-defined sub-eutectic immiscibility dome and this characteristic dernixing behaviour is reflected in the thermal decomposition of anhydrous kaolinite consequently the microstructural features resemble the spinodal decomposition process. It is well established that the spinodal decomposition process raises the nucleation frequency due to their low free energy barrier, (?G). The small magnitude of this barrier consequently promotes the evolution of a very fine microstructure. The process of spinodal decomposition is therefore expected to be influential during the reduction-nitridation of kaolinite minerals."

"Raise mining at the Namew Lake Nickel Mine in Manitoba uses 3 m diameter bored raises driven at 45 to 50 degrees dip for stope access and drilling. These raises are developed within the orebody on 20 m centres to accommodate electric-hydraulic longhole jumbos and charging wagons. Critical elements of stope development include delineation of are contacts, control of deviation during raise development, optimal stope sequencing to permit a high extraction rate, drill anchorage installation, production drilling and blasting, and ground control. Procedures to deal with these elements are described, with emphasis on the geotechnical investigation for design of open stopes and pillars.Although mining with drilled raises does not have the flexibility to follow large variations in orebody dip, results to date indicate that it can be used successfully in the thicker ore zones. Thinner zones are currently mined using a modified Avoca method. Some flexibility to accommodate variations in orebody dip in thin are zones may be obtained by using alimack raise climbers to drive access raises, and carry longhole drills and charging equipment. Rock quality has been sufficiently good to maintain stable stope walls for full-height mining of primary stapes at 20 m strike length.IntroductionThe Namew nickel deposit is located 60 km south of Flin Flon, Manitoba. It is a moderately dipping (45 to 50 degrees) pipe-like ultramafic intrusion with a sulphide halo enrichment. The diluted recoverable ore reserves at January I, 1990 are 2.2 million tonnes grading 2.05% Ni and 0.7% Cu. The operation is a joint venture between Hudson Bay Mining and Smelting (60%) and Outokornpu Mines Ltd. of Toronto (40%). The mine is budgeted to produce 530 000 tonnes in 1990. The deposit was discovered in 1984 and mine development commenced in 1987.In the raise mining area, primary stopes will be filled with a high quality backfill consisting of cement and quarried limestone. Secondary stopes will be mined out between the primaries in the second pass of mining. The design extraction rate is 94% over all.The orebody above 120 level has an average mining width of 2.4 m, so is too narrow for raise mining. A modified form of Avoca stoping is used."

"Atikokan is 200 km west of Thunder Bay and earned its mining fame from the discovery of the Steep Rock Iron Range in the late 1930s. Gold, however, was discovered in the Atikokan and Mine Centre areas in the late 1800s and eventually led to one of Ontario's first gold camps, and a total production of approximately 52,000 oz of gold and 174,000 oz of silver from 218,000 tons milled.The general geology of the area consists of Early Precambrian rocks of the Wabigoon and Quetico subprovinces, separated by the east-trending Quetico Fault. The Wabigoon Subprovince, to the north, consists of metavolcanics, minor metasediments and granitic batholiths. The Quetico Subprovince consists of metasediments and granitoids. Small ultramafic plutons occur throughout the metasediments.Within a 50-km radius of Atikokan, more than 50 gold occurrences, prospects and past producers have been discovered since the 18oos. The Atikokan Gold Study performed by the Ontario Geological Sur vey (Wilkinson, 1980, 1982) defined three types of gold mineralization in which gold is concentrated in quartz and quartz-carbonate veins:I) Metavolcanic-Hosted, Stratabound Type-associated with altered felsic fragmental units and chemical sedimentary rocks; possible gold mineralization source rocks. The mineralization is due to metamorphogenic (epigenetic) enrichment. Associated with dynamic metamorphism events and/or felsic intrusive events.2) Marmion Lake Batholith Type-occurs within the gneissic core of the batholith associated with north east-trending lineaments, representing faults or shear zones. Mineralized veins are related to several periods of deformation and shearing, suggesting that metamorphogenic veins were produced during dynamic metamorphism.3) Contact Zone Type -occurs in the contact zone rocks between gneissic batholiths and meta volcanic belts. Hydrothermal solutions produced during several deformational periods acted to leach and concentrate gold mineralization. Localized, discontinuous shear zones host the epigenetic (metamorphogenic) veins.Twenty-one properties in the area were mapped and sampled, and researched petrographically and geochemically. Geological data from the Atikokan Economic Geologist Program of the Ontario Geological Survey are used in discussing the types of mineralization, genetic models, and exploration targets and techiques."

"An interactive computer model of a dragline, windrow and spoil pile has been developed for modelling oil sands mining operations. The model is to be used in conj unction with models of other oil sands mining equipment, such as bucket-wheel excavators and reclaimers, conveyors, hoppers, bins, trucks and shovels, to study mining operations on a minute-by-minute basis. From the orebody description and mining selectivity, layers of ore and reject are determined and mined by the dragline. Reject is dumped on the pit floor; ore is either dumped on a windrow for later removal by a bucket-wheel reclaimer or directly dumped into a hopper feeding a conveyor. The model allows for the presence of pads as a dragline base, key cuts and a number of interruptions to the mining operation such as shift changes, boom checks, engineering services, repairs, delays, preventative maintenance, etc. A CRT display keeps the model operator informed about equipment status and performance. The model operator can direct the course of the simulation by issuing commands to the model at any time during the simulation.IntroductionThis paper describes an interactive computer model of a dragline, windrow and spoil pile. The model was designed by the author based on information and specifications provided by Canstar Oil Sands Ltd. The model design was implemented and tested on Petro-Canda's IBM computer system by DMR and Associates Ltd. of Calgary, Alberta.The model was designed to form three components of an oil sands mining operations model, described in reference I. Figure 1 shows the interaction of those components with the remainder of the oil sands mining model.An ""Ore/Waste Body"" data base provides information to the dragline model about the location and composition of or e and waste in the mine. The dragline model is used to simulate mining this ore/waste body, to build up spoil piles for center reject (waste) and to dump ore onto windrows or hoppers (situated over conveyors) to deliver the ore to the extraction plant. The windrow model component provides a data base which will be used by a model of a bucket-wheel reclaimer which simulates the loading of ore from the windrow on to a conveyor via a bridge."

"A new process of near net shape continuous casting of metal pipe has been put out. The specialty of the process is that no inner core is used. The principle of the process has been presented, and the effect of several factors on the thickness of the pipe has been investigated experimentally and numerically. It is shown that the temperature and the level of the molten metal, cooling intensity of the mold, and the velocity of casting influenced the thickness of the pipe apparently. In order to improve evenness of the thickness of the pipe, the mold was dedicatedly designed, and special methods were taken. By this process, a metallic material like ""bamboo"" was fabricated.IntroductionMetal pipe is a widely used material. Up to now, many processes have been put out to produce the pipe. However, the processes are usually expensive and inefficient. For instance, the welding pipe, which is most widely used, is produced through continuous casting of slab, rolling of the slab into sheet, and welding, with several times of heating and processing. Continuous casting of pipe can not produce small diameter of pipe, which is mostly needed, due to the inner core. Even though. OCC process is novel in fabricating the pipe with small diameter, it is inefficient. In this paper, the no-inner core continuous casting of pipe was proposed. With this process, pipe with small diameter can be produced efficiently. The influence of several parameters on the thickness and evenness of piper wall. With this process, a ""bamboolike"" pipe was fabricated.ExperimentThe experimental apparatus is shown in Fig. I. It is composed of mold, furnace, melt level adjuster, and dummy pipe. In the process, the level of the melt was adjusted at a proper position, then the mold along with the dummy pipe was inserted into the melt in a certain depth. The melt in the mold began solidifying, forming a solid shell. After that, the dummy pipe was pulled upward in a certain speed, drawing the solid shell out of the mold. Thus, a pipe was continuously cast."

The strain-amplitude- dependent part of the internal friction of alluminum after several ther momechanical treatments has been measured in the I-cycle range and at the ambient temperature. The internal friction in the outer layer of the torsional specimen us stress is computed from the experimental data. The curues obtained are analyzed in tevnzs of u coirzbinntion of AH and p, which aye, respectively, due to the vecersible unpinning from weak pills and to the plastic strain. Considerirlg the notion of thermally activated unpinning and repinning, it is shown that in our experimental conditions tlze dislocation lines acl as in the H model of Granato and Liiclze. It is also seen that the internal friction p which appears at higher- strains call be described by a simple expression which is in good agreement with our results. A qualitative interpretatiorz is proposed by combining these new types of intelpnal fviction. We define the internal friction 6 as half the ratio of the dissipated energy aW during one cycle to the maximum supplied strain energy W of a material submitted to a periodic stress. Experiment and theory show that internal friction varies with stress above a critical value.' Below this value the internal friction is strain-amplitude-independent and is often masked by an experimental background; so we shall call it AB. ~bove this critical value, the internal friction is strain-amplitude-dependent. This quantity is usually called aH:' and it can be explained as a thermal unpinning of dislocations.3-6 Furthermore, at higher stresses, a rapid increase of internal friction appears. This phenomenon could be caused by the plastic strain,' so we shall call it Ap. It seems interesting to us to study the influence of several t her momechanical treatments on the curve internal friction 6 vs strain E, in order to study the variation of AH and p with the concentration and the repartition of linear and point defects. "Cominco's Polaris Mine is a lead-zinc underground operation that began commercial production in early 1982. The mine site is located on Little Cornwallis Island in the Canadian Arctic at a latitude of 75°23'N and at a longitude of 96°55'W. The nearest settlement, Resolute Bay, some 100 kilometres southeasterly from the mine, is accessed from the mine by light aircraft. The mine site can be accessed by sea during the six-week ice-free period each year. During this time all major operating supplies are brought to the mine and the lead and zinc concentrate products are shipped out to market.GeologyThe Polaris orebody lies near the top of the Thumb Mountain Formation of Ordovician age. This formation is a relatively homogeneous section of thin to medium bedded limestones which are brecciated and dolomitized in the area around the orebody. The deposit is described as a Mississippi Valley-type orebody. Ore minerals are sphalerite and galena with the waste being predominantly dolomite with calcite and marcasite. The ore is quite porous with voids being generally filled with ice as the mineralized zone lies entirely within permafrost. Reserves consist of about twenty million tonnes of ore grading 3.8% Pb and 14.3% Zn with a further three million tonnes of inferred ore at a slightly lower grade.The orebody strikes in a north-south direction with the hangingwall dipping at about twenty degrees to the east. It is generally conformable with the stratigraphy. The footwall in the western portion of the orebody, the Panhandle, lies about 10 to 30 metres below the hangingwall. To the east the footwall drops sharply, creating an orebody height of up to 110 metres in what is referred to as the Keel Zone. The Panhandle Zone has typically 80 - 110 metres of cover above the hangingwall , About 25% of the reserves are in the Panhandle Zone, the remainder being in the Keel Zone. Figure I illustrates a plan view of the orebody relative to other surface facilities on the property and Figure 2 illustrates a simplified section through the Panhandle and Keel Zones."

"Gravity concentrators are evaluated either in closed or open circuit. The process developed by MIRL employs the use of neutron activated gold (/98Au) and radiation detection circuits which monitor the concentrator's product pulp streams. Concentrator recovery is determined from the ratio of the number of gold particles detected as passing into the concentrate to the total number of gold particles detected over all monitored pulp streams. This system eliminates the experimental errors introduced by sampling, sample reduction, and assaying and allows recovery to be evaluated for gold particles of specific sizes, shapes, and flatness. In addition to allowing for a more accurate and detailed recovery analysis, this process significantly reduces the time and cost required for unit evaluation when compared to other gold recovery analysis procedures. This system enjoys its greatest utility where a large number of tests are to be run in order to evaluate a concentrator over a variety of operational settings, i.e. factorial designs, and allows accurate testing of concentrators operated in closed circuit systems.IntroductionThe surge in gold prices of the late 1970s and early 1980s was followed closely by a renewed interest in gravity concentration processes, especially in concentrators claiming efficient recovery of fine placer gold. Cones, spirals, spinning bowls, jigs and cyclones are all considered potential fine gold concentrators. Fine gold, in this context, is defined as not only that gold finer than 250 um (60 mesh""), but also coarser gold, whose low shape factor may decrease its recovery by conventional, large-scale sluicing operations.Adoption of fine gold concentrators by the Alaskan placer milling industry was retarded by the lack of reliable, accurate, and reproducible data on concentrator efficiency with respect to fine placer gold recovery. In most cases, concentrator performance was based on a limited number of tests run on placer material, about which only slight knowledge of gold size and shape characteristics existed. In order to be prepared for the resurgence of interest in fine gold concentrators, which will follow the next upturn in gold prices, a detailed study of the fine gold recovery characteristics of gravity concentrators needs to be conducted."

"Various measurement, monitoring and verification (MMV) techniques are used to ensure the safety of operations in petroleum projects. One of these techniques is microseismic (MS) monitoring of the caprock. A challenge in MS monitoring of caprock is that unlike projects such as tunnelling in hard rocks, the number of recorded events are much smaller and also wide spread through the rock mass which makes interpretation of the physical meaning behind the events very difficult.In this paper, a numerical technique is introduced and validated for coupling a finite difference code, FLAC3D (Fast Lagrangian Analysis of Continua), with a discrete element code, PFC3D (Particle Flow Code). Then, a similar approach is adopted for modeling microseismic events in the caprock. For this purpose, the underburden, reservoir and overburden layers are modeled by FLAC3D. A rather small section of caprock above the reservoir is nulled in the FLAC3D model and substituted by a PFC3D inclusion. The reservoir pressures are then applied to the reservoir section of FLAC3D. Once the FLAC3D cycles, there will be induced pressures in the caprock due to its undrained response to the change in pressures within the reservoir. These induced pressures are transferred to PFC3D as boundary velocities. Then the PFC3D cycles and sends back the boundary forces to FLAC3D. This back and forth process continues until equilibrium is reached. During this process, there will be bond breakages within the PFC3D inclusion that can be regarded as MS events. An algorithm for recording the microseismic energies based on a change in local strains is also implemented. The results are then compared with real data. The effect of injection fluid temperature is also studied. No significant appearance of microseismic events was observed due to injection of CO2 in both cases (i.e. with or without considering temperature). However, this continuum/discontinuum approach seems promising for understanding the microseismic response of caprock in more detail and also using the MS data for validation of geomechanical models."

"The Lindsley project was a program of deep drilling to test the contact down-dip from two nickel-copper deposits, one uneconomical and the other mined out. The role of Borehole Pulse EM(PEM) was to detect the higher grade, more massive sulphide zones if they were missed by a drillhole, and to help determine geometry if the zones were intersected. Two problems appeared as the PEM survey progressed: (1) conductivity-thickness as measured by the PEM did not always relate to economic sulphides as determined by the market; (2) a pattern of unusual PEM anomalies was obtained that indicated something odd and big, but the cause was unknown. A large fold structure subsequently was indicated by a program of deepening previous holes, the third of which intersected high-grade mineralization below 1280 m. Falconbridge is in the process of shaft sinking and underground exploration.IntroductionThe Falconbridge Lindsley property is on the south rim of the Sudbury basin, 8 Ian north of downtown Sudbury. The original property was acquired by a prospector named James Stobie, who, in early August 1885, staked a showing that later became the Mount Nickel mine (Fig. I). On August 10 Stobie staked another property that would become the Little Stobie mine, and at the end of the same month he staked the main Stobie orebody.In 1888, the ground immediately west of the MOlU1t Nickel find was staked. This ground contained the Blezard deposit (Fig. 1) which was put into production in 1889 and was eventually acquired by Inco. Down-dip from the Blezard workings, on Falconbridge ground, is located the upper Lindsley No. 1 deposit which was drilled off by Falconbridge in the 1940s to 1950s. A decision to go underground on the Lindsley No.1 mineralization was made in 1969, but the project was cancelled in 1971 because of declining nickel prices. The shaft was stopped at 95 m, and the headframe and hoist were sold. Further surface exploration drilling in the 1970s discovered the deeper Lindsley No. 2 zone, but as it had grades similar to those of the No. 1 zone, it too was considered uneconomic."

Quang Ninh province is the most significant coal producing region in the north of Vietnam. The Nui Beo Coal Company (NBCC) operates open pit mines in Quang Ninh province and the waste overburden produced is dumped as sidehill fill in the Chinh Bac waste dump site. In the past, no special consideration has been given to the environmental impacts during the dumping operations. The mine waste is transported in trucks from the mine site to the dumping site and the loading, hauling and dumping operations are the main sources of dust emission. Rain events, especially during the rainy season, cause the generation of contaminated surface water as well as seepage of water through the dump at a number of locations. The existence of cracks at the top of the dump can pose serious stability problems with heavy rain events leading to failure of slopes which can potentially disturb vast areas of land currently used for agricultural purposes and human settlement. For sustainable development at the Chinh Bac waste dump site in the future, apart from the social and economic considerations to be assessed, there is an absolute necessity for environmental protection measures to be in place both during and after the dumping of the mine waste overburden. Research Association Mining and Environment in Vietnam (RAME) is working to develop and implement concepts for the mitigation of environmental problems emerging from dust, contaminated water and lacking slope stability to ensure successful rehabilitation of the coal mine waste dumps in the north of Vietnam. Within the framework of RAME, the Institute of Mining Engineering I (RWTH Aachen University) is managing and working to develop the stabilisation concepts for the solid mine waste dump in collaboration with the Chair of Geotechnical Engineering (RWTH Aachen University), Brenk Systemplanung and the Vietnamese group of companies VINACOMIN (Vietnam National Coal-Mineral Industries Group). The most economical and environmentally sound operations, as well as locally adaptable environmental protection measures, are essential for the sustainable development of the dumping operations at Chinh Bac dump. This paper describes the dump site and the sustainable development possibilities with an emphasis on the environmental protection and stability problems at the Chinh Bac waste dump.

REINARTZ, Middletown, Ohio.-Mr. Carl Peirce has presented a valuable paper on a subject that has been very widely discussed in recent years, especially since the demand for high finish, deep drawing and other grades of sheet steel in the lower carbon ranges has become an important factor in the steel business. Steel of this analysis has been produced for many years, but the product for which it was made did not require the extra care in the steel plant that it does today. It must now be worked down into thin sheets for special purposes and undergo many severe finishing processes both in the steel mill and in the fabricating plants. Mr. Peirce's paper has outlined in a concise and logical manner the steps which must be taken in manufacturing such steels. The secret of successs is attention to details of well known steel practices. I agree with him that quality steels of this class cannot normally be made out of inferior raw materials. Scrap should be clean and if possible not too variable in analysis. Galvanized scrap or babbit are particularly objectionable. Scrap should be in such physical condition that undue delays are not encountered in charging the furnace. Limestone should preferably contain over 95 per cent. available calcium carbonate, and be free from clay or other foreign substances. Almost universal practice shows that 10 per cent. limestone is required for proper slag volumes to protect the metal from over oxidation. The use of 8 per cent. limestone makes the operation less fool-proof.

"A full-scale demonstration unit of Tampella's LIFAC desulphurization process was tested at SaskPower's Poplar River Power Station Unit No. I. The test program included a series of parametric tests, followed by a 1500 hour operational evaluation. This paper summarizes the results of the test program, and SaskPower's economic evaluation which led to selection of the LlFAC process for SaskPower's 300 MW Shand power station. IntroductionOne of the major influences on the coal mining industry today is public and legislative response to acid rain. When sulphur-bearing fuels such as coal are burned, the sulphur oxidizes to sulphur dioxid e (S00 which, if uncontrolled, enters the atmosphere as one of the by-products of combustion. S02 then combines with water in the air to form an acid and acid rain results. Combustion also produces nitrogen oxides (N0J which can combine with water in the air forming nitrogen based acid , also contributing to acid rain.Acid rain has become a significant international concern. Newspapers have reported on dying forests, dead lakes and crumbling statues. Papers also include articles professing that the physical results of acid rain are vastly overstated. In the United States, a IO-year, Y2-billion dollar study called the National Acid Precipitation Assessment Program (NAPAP) was commissioned to evaluate the effects of acid rain. Even this extensive scientific study did not resolve the controversy. United States power plants will be spending 10 billion dollars in the next decade for flue gas clean-up equipment. Even all this new equipment will not stem the tide of change to low sulphur coals and to “clean “natural gas. The following summarizes legislative actions taken for Canada and the United States."

In 1923 a Western mining company was experimenting with the device of an inventor designed to locate buried ores by radio. Because the progress was slow and the results were confusing, the company began to doubt the usefulness of the method and invited me to review the whole question of the application of physics to ore detection. I was fortunate in securing the cooperation of several physicists who had worked with me during the war on the problem of submarine detection. This group has been increased and has been studying the problem of physical exploration for ores since that time. It was evident that the problem is a big one, with many angles of approach. Its general features may be set down, in rough outline, as follows: The soils, rocks and ores hidden beneath the surface differ one from another in many respects. These differences may be made to furnish a clew for the physicists working from the surface. To bring these differences into action the physicist creates some kind of an effect which penetrates into the ground and is distorted and reflected when it meets boundaries between different sorts of underground structure. In other words, he sends a message down, and the rocks and ore send back signals in reply. In picturing this process, we should not regard the ground as dense and impenetrable. The kind of messages used pass through the earth about as readily as a sound wave travels the air. If, then, the fundamental procedure is to shout down questions in the hope that an orebody will hear and answer back to us, it is clear that a large part of the expert's study must relate to the kind of questions best suited to the temperament and intelligence of orebodies. It will be easier for the ore to reply to some of our questions than to others, and it is for us to find the right questions. In certain cases, we are spared the necessity of using a messenger, because nature has already provided one. For example, we already have a terrestrial magnetic field which automatically and continually conveys messages from underneath. To achieve the long-term goal of continually improving our operating processes, all cut-and-fill and undercut-and-fill workplaces at Thompson Mine have been evaluated for their conversion potential to the bulk method referred to as VerticalBlock Mining (V.B.M.).Since December 1979, conversion has occurred to the extent where 80% of the ore hoisted is mined using Vertical Block Mining (V.B.M.).Productivity and profitability have been substantially improved by converting to this bulk method, especially in pillar areas.IntroductionThompson Mine is a 6000 ton per day underground nickel mine located 3 miles outside the City of Thompson, 400 air miles north of Winnipeg . The mine has two shafts, T-l and T-3 (Fig. 1). The T-l shaft is 4427 feet deep with the deepest mining taking place on 4000 level. The T-3 shaft, which is the area of this presentation, extends to a depth of 2607 ft with the deepest operating level at 2400 ft. The two shafts, some 10 000 ft apart, are connected underground on numerous levels. The ore mined at T-3 is trammed on 2400 level to the T-I main ore pass and hoisted through the T-l shaft. Eight hundred and fifty thousand cubic feet of fresh air per minute ventilates the mine.The 1400 level 310 pillar complex is located in the T-3 mine area. There are six rib pillars, two crown pillars and one main pillar (boundary pillar between cut-and-fill stopes) within the complex (Fig. 2). The majority of the ore in this area has been mined using mechanized cut-and-fill techniques .Undercut-and-fill mining was the method originally planned to recover these pillars. It is slow, labour-intensive, and requires extensive use of timber during the mining cycle. The extraction drifts in the area are heavily timbered due to their proximity to the ore and the age of the facilities. Increasing drift maintenance costs and the successful mining of two main pillars with V.8.M. techniques provided the stimulus to review the mining plans for this area."

"Hydraulic mining consists of coal erosion by powerful jet s of water from hydraulic monitors operated by remote control. The broken coal is crushed and mixed with water and then transported from the face to the surface using gravity whenever possible. This is a simple, safe and productive method. It will easily satisfy North American productivity standards if the structural features and coal properties are favourable for water jet cutting technology (Kaiser Resources Ltd. , hydraulic mine). General ConsiderationIn open-pit mines, placer mining (Fig. I) and hydroelectric construction projects, hydraulic earth moving techniques have been successfully applied. The stripping and transporting of the overburden has been accomplished by means of large monitor jets augmented by slurry pumps and pipes. An extension of this technique has led to the underground extraction of coal and ores. To date, the method has been most successfully used in undergrond coal mining, because the coal can be easily cut and flushed away by water jets, and the rocks of the roof strata can be left behind. Due to this favourable situation, the hydraulic mining definition only relates to the underground coal mines.At present, there are four basic types of hydraulic mining, which can be defined according to the coal breaking technique used in each case. The methods are briefly discussed below:(1) Coal excavation may be carried out by conventional techniques, but the mine is designed and equipped for the hydraulic transport of the mineral from the working place to surface. Under these circumstances, the coal breaking may not be influenced by the water jet, however it may be indirectly involved. For example, pre-loosening of the coal may be done by water infusion-hydraulic fracturing. Water may also be used to flush the broken coal, which has been excavated either by drilling and blasting or by mechanical cutting, into the transport flumes. In other cases, a mechanical loader may load the coal directly into the hydraulic transport system, without using any water for the extraction process. This hydraulic mining concept is primarily used for hard and impermeable coal, such as anthracite."

"This paper describes qualitatively the progressive are losses and rock dilution in a mining project from the geological modelling to and including the concentration. A simple theoretical model of the net present value of a deposit, assuming a log-normal grade frequency function, is used to find the pair of decisions on rate of production and cut-off grade, which maximizes the net present value. Various degrees of ore losses and rock dilution are then applied on this optimum, and the resulting decreasing net present values are calculated, as well as the increasing cost of metal and the increasing metal losses as a function of are losses and rock dilution.IntroductionDue to a variety of uncertainties, to inevitable lack of precision in deposit estimation and in mine planning, and due to production constraints, ore losses and rock dilution occur throughout the many phases of a mining project. The phases range from the geological definition of the orebody, over the cut-off grade optimization and decision, over the design of the mining method and the actual mining to the ore dressing, where the final loss of valuable ore into the tailings occurs. Quantification of ore losses and rock dilution are mostly difficult if not simply impossible to obtain. At the end-phase an estimate of the total dilution may be obtained with some degree of precision by observations of the amounts and analysis of concentrate and tailings. It is much more difficult to estimate the total ore losses because the uncertainty of the geological modelling in the initial phase and in the mining phase is very difficult to quantify, despite the use of geostatistics for grade estimation.Many attempts at quantification of ore losses and rock dilution have been made and some examples are shown in Table I. Although they differ widely from each other, it is obvious from these figures that ore losses and rock dilution are significant and have considerable effects on the economical results of a mining operation. "In 2017, one of the international authorities on coal bursts, Dr. Chris Mark, published a paper entitled “Coal Bursts that Occur during Development: A Rock Mechanics Enigma,” in which several relevant technical issues were identified, the most pertinent being:i.whilst development coal bursts are commonly associated with geological faults, understanding which specific faults result in burst-prone development mining conditions and why, remains undefined.ii.conventional wisdom in relation to strong roof and floor geology of the coal seam might be limiting, based on certain burst examples in Colorado.iii. development coal bursts can occur without the local ground stresses being substantially elevated from their in situ levels.This paper outlines what is considered to be a credible, first-principles, mechanistic explanation for these three current development coal burst conundrums by reference to early published coal testing work examining the significance of a lack of “constraint” to coal stability and an understanding of how very specific structural geology and other geological features can logically cause this to occur in situ, albeit on a statistically very rare basis. This basic model is examined by reference to published information pertaining to the development coal-burst that occurred at the Austar Coal Mine in New South Wales, Australia, in 2014 and from the Sunnyside District in Utah, USA.The “cause and effect” model for development coal bursts presented also offers a meaningful explanation for the statistical improbability for what are nonetheless potentially highly-destructive events, being able to explain the statistical rarity being just as important to the credibility of the model as explaining the local conditions associated with burst events.The model could also form the basis for a robust, risk-based approach utilising a “hierarchy of controls” to the operational management of the development coal burst threat. Specifically, these include the use of pre-mining predictions for likely burst-prone and non-burst-prone areas, the use of the mine layout to avoid or at least minimise mining within burst-prone areas if appropriate, and finally the development of an operational Trigger Action Response Plan that reduces the likelihood of inadvertent roadway development into a burst-prone area without suitable safety controls already being in place."

During the past few years the writer has been impressed by the close relation of many epigenetic orebodies with anticlinal structures. In the literature on ore deposits there is occasional mention that an oreshoot or district is on an anticline, but in most of the descriptions no weight or significance is attached to the relation, and usually the fact is concealed in a mass of structural detail. A few writers have stressed the relationship in a few districts or on a certain type of deposit. Church, Spurr, Butler, Stahl and Schuette have called attention to certain features, but the general extent of such a correlation has not been made known in any publication that the author has seen. A recent article1 on the localization of ore deposits, by well-known geologists, does not consider this common association. The author has seen in the field a number of the structural features described, and in addition has made a fairly complete review of the literature. This paper presents enough of the examples found to show the frequency of the relation to anticlines, and since only a few deposits on synclines are known, all of these of any importance of which the writer knows are mentioned. With certain qualifications which are discussed later, epigenetic ore deposits of replacement or vein type are mostly found where local upwarps of the earth's crust have taken place. Where formations antedating the ore deposits are present in the proper attitude to demonstrate vertical warping (i. e., more or less horizontal beds) the structural feature on which a mineral district, or mineralized area is located is almost always anticlinal, or domelike in nature. Some or even most of the ore deposits in a given district may be on the flanks of the upwarp, but few major districts are located definitely on downwarped areas. Synclinal basins within certain limits of size appear to be unfavorable to the type of fracturing that admits ore-bearing solutions. Replacement orebodies frequently are localized in small anticlines or domes, the size of the anticline or roll often being more or less commensurate with that of the enclosed oreshoot.
