O desgaste abrasivo é o principal responsável por quebras de equipamentos e, como consequência, paradas não programadas para manutenção; pois causa a perda progressiva de material das partes móveis em contato e movimento relativo. O presente estudo analisa o desgaste abrasivo na superfície do rolete de carga dos transportadores de correia. Para a análise foi utilizado o equipamento abrasômetro do tipo roda de borracha conforme norma ASTM G65. Os procedimentos de ensaio contemplaram: o corte de quatro corpos de prova de aço 1020, limpeza, pesagem - utilizando balança de precisão, avaliação superficial com rugosímetro e ensaio de dureza. Dois corpos de prova foram revestidos com a tinta Laranja Munsell 2,5YR6/14m, para simular as condições de campo. Em seguida, foi realizado ensaio no abrasômetro ASTM G65; utilizando o procedimento “A” previsto na norma ASTM G65 - classificado como desgaste severo com carga de 130N. Logo depois, foi calculado o volume de material perdido e a taxa de desgaste. Os resultados obtidos nos ensaios possibilitaram concluir que, o desgaste predominante na superfície dos roletes de carga é o abrasivo por 3 corpos, em função, principalmente, do transbordo de minério do processo. A superfície do corpo de prova, sem revestimento, apresentou uma perda de material que compromete a vida útil do rolete e da correia. Já, na amostra revestida, foi possível observar que o desgaste abrasivo por três corpos ocorre, mas é reduzido consideravelmente; isso pode ser explicado pela diminuição da rugosidade superficial.

For the first time in its history the Institute will hold a meeting in the State of Arizona. A few years ago Arizona stood third in the copper-producing districts of the United States. Since that time, with the development of porphyry mines, the output has gone up with great rapidity until it not only is the leading district, but its output at the present tune is at the rate of nearly double the Montana output; which now stands second in the list. In connection with this development, most interesting departures have been made in methods of mining, concentration and smelting. Principles of mining and metallurgy of the greatest interest will be covered by papers which will appear in the Bulletin and be presented at Technical Sessions, while ample opportunity 'will ,be- afforded for those who go to the meeting to see all the points of interest to them. In addition, members will be well rewarded by the marvelous natural features to be seen on the trip, including the petrified forests, the cliff dwellings on the Apache Trail and the Grand Canyon of Arizona. In light of soaring commodity prices, Nkomati has investigated the potential of processing additional low grade nickel ores to add to their reserves. The Chromititic Peridotite Mineralised Zone (PCMZ) was identified as one ore type with the potential of producing a high grade nickel concentrate. In addition to the nickel, copper, cobalt and PGM?s, the ore also contains a significant amount of chromite which adds substantial value to the project. Pyrrhotite, pentlandite, chalcopyrite and chromite are the dominant minerals within the ore, which on average grades around 0.23% Ni and 12% Cr2O3. The PCMZ ore contains excessive amounts of fibrous silicates which makes it a challenging float, with gangue control as the key element to success. Extensive laboratory testwork, which eventually led to a pilot plant campaign, was undertaken with the aim of developing a process route for treating the PCMZ ore. Several flotation circuit configurations were tested and results from the optimal circuit indicated that a nickel concentrate grading at 8.5% is achievable at a recovery of 78%, with substantial recoveries for the copper, cobalt and PGM co-products. The chromite concentrate, grading at 45%, was extracted from the flotation rougher tailings via a spiral plant. These promising results were incorporated into the plant design and are currently being evaluated in a bankable feasibility study, which will see the current 100ktpm MMZ concentrator being upgraded to a 250ktpm PCMZ concentrator as part of Nkomati?s Phase II expansion.

VAN GRAAN, M.Sc (Pretoria) (Visitor) Microclimate suits have been shown to be very effective in decreasing physiological strain in hot, wet environments, thus enabling men to work without risk in areas that would normally carry a high risk of heat stroke. In this paper, some design considerations in the development of the frozen jacket are described. Water complied with most of the desirable properties required of a coolant material for use In a microclimate suit. The Human Sciences Laboratory has developed a jacket in which ice is used as the coolant and which is designed according to the most acceptable anthropometrical characteristics. The jacket consists of an inner poncho-type waistcoat containing 28 water compartments. Over this is worn an insulating jacket, which minimizes warming of the coolant by the environment. Suitable refrigeration units have been developed to freeze the jackets underground. Laboratory tests have shown that these jackets are effective for about 2,5 hours, Irrespective of the wet-bulb environment, when men are working at a moderate rate. Jackets should, however, be used only in environments in which the wet-bulb temperature is in the range of 32,S0 to 35,S °C.

"Residual vegetable fibers as leftovers from crops, industrial activities and consumable items are realistic options to be incorporated into low cost polymeric composites with the aim of replacing other commonly used materials. The present work assesses the technical properties of epoxy composites reinforced with residual fibers from the coconut fruit, also known as coir fibers. Based on these properties, an evaluation was carried out on these coir fiber/epoxy matrix composites to be used as building panels and furniture in comparison with conventional materials.IntroductionThe utilization of waste from industrial activities is presently recognized as important way in preventing environmental pollution as well as developing new products. This utilization would also generate employment and contribute to environmental improvement in global scale. Among such wastes, those from lignocellulosic materials represent a considerable potential for practical application. In fact, about 2.5 billion tons of these materials are currently available [1], and their fiber content is an important option for composites fabrication. Actually, lignocellulosic fibers are now replacing synthetic fibers as reinforcement in resin matrix composites owing to specific advantages such as low cost, biodegradability and renewable characteristics [2,3]. Moreover, as abundant waste, some of these lingocellulosic fibers could help reducing the use of traditional materials like wood and plastics in many industrials applications. This would prevent further stress on the environment caused by depletion of dwindling resources associated with forests and petroleum."

Another excellent Swedish underground crushing plant is that at Crusher Station 51 of LKAB in Kiruna, Sweden. Bottom-dump rail cars pass over a dump scroll to discharge magnetite ore into a 288 cu yd (220 m3) pocket equipped with a Hewitt Robins E-13 vibrating grizzly feeder. The grizzly section is 59 in. (1500 mm) long and has bar spacings 3 in. (76 mm) wide. Any oversize boulders which will not pass the chute opening to the feeder are blasted. The primary breaker is a Morgardshammar overhead eccentric 55 in. by 71 in. (1400 by 1800 mm) jaw crusher powered by a 200 hp (149 kw) motor. An open side setting of 10. 8 to 11. 8 in (275 to 300 mm) accounts for the high capacity of this crushing unit (2760 stph or 2500 mtph). This figure compares favorably with the capacity of many gyratory crushers but is typical of the Swedish jaw crushing installations, which are often followed by three more stages of crushing or by autogenous grinding. Crushed ore from the jaw crusher is combined with the grizzly under- size in the crushed ore pocket and is fed by a second vibrating grizzly feeder to the secondary cone crusher. Both crushers are serviced by 50/5 ton overhead bridge cranes. During maintenance operations air -operated gates shut off the flow of ore from the dump and primary crushed ore pockets.

As orebodies being mined globally are of ever-decreasing grades, the focus on the concentration process has moved increasingly to the challenges faced in management of the gangue minerals. This is especially so in the flotation of platinum group minerals (PGMs), where head grades are typically in the region of 4–7 g/t. Hence, in PGM operations, a typical recovery of about 80 percent requires depressing about 85 percent of the gangue minerals. In a flotation cell the main control parameters are reagent type and dosage, froth depth and air addition rate. This paper reviews research projects carried out over an extended period aimed at optimizing the depression of gangue minerals: both those that are naturally floatable and those, such as chromite, that are entrained.  This has involved comparing the two major depressants used in the industry — guar and carboxymethylcellulose (CMC) — in the depression of the relevant gangue minerals, as well as investigating their consequent effect on the behavior of the froth phase. Because most PGM flotation plants treat the ore as if all the PGMs are associated with sulfides, copper sulfate is widely used as an activator, but this can also lead to inadvertent activation of gangue minerals. Finally, chromite levels must be kept below 3–5 percent to avoid any negative effects on smelter performance, and thus it is important to reduce chromite recovery which mainly occurs due to entrainment through, for example, froth depth control.

A technique for measuring the creep and rupture strength of nickel specimens bonded by sintered oxide layers has been developed for the investigation of the role of grain-boundary oxide in the oxidation strengthening of nickel during creep at 817 °C. Prom the inverse dependence of the rate of bonding on the thickness of the starting oxide, it is suggested that the rate of diffusion of Ni++ through NiO is the controlling process at the start of sintering. Cornparisons of the creep and rupture strength and of the microstructure of sintered couples with conventionul creep specimens suggest rupture in nickel is prevented by load-bearikzg, ikltergranular layers of oxide. A number of recent investigations have shown that at high temperature and low stress the creep-rupture strength of nickel and nickel-base alloys may be much greater in air than in an inert gas or vacuum.'-7 For example, at 817°C and 2500 psi, nickep failed in vacuum in 48 hr but not in air after 4000 hr, and a Ni-Cr-A1 alloy5 at 1038°C and 3000 psi failed in vacuum in 4 hr but not in air after 731 hr. "The property of Siscoe Gold Mines, Limited, comprises about 1,600 acres, including Siscoe island and adjacent claims under water in Montigny lake, in Dubuisson and Vassan townships, Quebec.For many years the property was reached by way of Harricana river and its chain of lakes from Amos, Quebec, about 45 miles distant. In later years a highway has been built from Noranda east through Val d'Or, about 5 miles distant.Gold was discovered on one of the claims on the north shore of Montigny lake as early as 1911, but these gold discoveries have never been economically important. Several years later gold was discovered on Siscoe island and considerable surface work was carried out. Still later, iscoe Gold Mines, Limited, was formed and carried out further work, some of it through shallow shafts. In 1928, larger scale operations were undertaken and a 100-ton mill was constructed. In the years following, production· was on a larger scale with lower grade, until finally a milling rate of over 1,000 tons a day was attained. Approximately 1,500,000 tons were treated between the end of 1940 and mid-year 1945. At present the milling rate is down to about 200 tons a day and work is confined chiefly to some of the less important veins that have been recently developed.The following is a summary of production up to December 31st, 1946:"

"The Wasamac Gold Mines mill, situated 10 miles from Rouyn-Noranda on highway 59, commenced milling April 1st 1965 at a rate of 700 tons per day. This has gradually increased to over 1200 tons per day in December. The mill has done up to 1400 tons on occasion.The ore was formed in the Wasa shear zone by means of replacement. The minerals which replaced the original rocks were carbonates, quartz, pyrite, chlorite, gold and silver. Work index varies from 9. 6 on the chlorite to 11. 6 on the quartz. The gold is very finely disseminated throughout the gangue and while associated with the pyrite is not included in the pyrite. Very seldom is gold found or seen in the free state.Test work showed a medium fine grind of 85 to 90 per cent was necessary to achieve a 95.00 per cent extraction. Straight cyanidation time of 30 to 36 hours was indicated. This has been borne out by subsequent mill performance with a grind around 87 per cent minus 200 mesh and extraction ranging from 95 to 96 per cent.When it was decided to bring the Wasamac property into production, the Bicroft Uranium Mines Ltd. crushing and grinding units together with one pebble mill and the pachuca tanks from Dyno Uranium Mines Ltd. were purchased.Wasamac crusher house and mill buildings are of laminated wood construction, covered with 5/ 8th inch plywood and corrugated iron sheeting."

Since the original paper, two methods have been introduced to compute the parameters of the three parameter size distribution equation: [ ] Both of them are based on graphical means, which are time-consuming and of little statistical significance. A program has been developed, using the Gauss-Newton method to compute by nonlinear regression analysis the parameters of the equation. Although the method is quite general in curve-fitting applications, it does not appear to be used in the field of size analysis, and a brief description is given. "Concentrate drying at the Sullivan Concentrator goes back to 1937 when the original coal-fired dryer was put into operation. This was a second hand 8' dia. x 56' long Struthers-Wells rotary dryer that came from the phosphate plant in Warfield, B.C.In 1962, replacement of the old dryer was seriously considered. The shell and the auxiliary drive mechanism were badly worn and needed replacing. In April 1963, the new 8' dia. x 65' long fuel oil-fired Struthers-Wells dryer went in operation at an installed cost of $174,000.In 1965, it was apparent that a major rebuilding of the dust collecting system would have to be done. A study was carried out and a Ducon Dynamic Gas Scrubber was installed. The system went in operation in November 1966 and has fully met expectations.In the same year, the zinc dryer was converted from fuel oil to natural gas. This paper presents detailed information on the genesis, formation, and industrial utilization of Yaylacik magnesites. Tectonically, the study area is located within the Tavsanli Zone, immediately south of the Izmir-Ankara suture in western Turkey. The geologic setting mainly comprises ophiolitic melangks basics, and ultrabasics associated with very rich magnesite deposits and lacustrine sediments. The ophiolitic unit tectonically overlies the schists and carbonate rocks. The presence of glaucophane and lawsonite indicates a low-temperature/high-pressure metamorphism. The ultra- basic rocks, which exhibit cumulate composition, have been mostly serpentinised and represent the oceanic floor of the Yaylacik ophiolite. Basic intrusives consist of dolerite and diabase, and they show the characteristics of within-plate dolerites. The magnesite occurrences are commonly observed in block, stockwork, lens, and vein forms and were deposited within the serpentinites. In most magnesite samples, secondary quartz/chalcedony formations are observed as fracture fillings due to the highly effective tectonic movements. Field surveys and microscope studies reveal that magnesites had been formed by the metasomatic alteration of serpentinites. Chemical analyses show that, although MgO content of the magnesites varies from 43.41% to 50.48%, Fe203 and CaO are lower than 1%. Silica contents are as high as 5.52% in a few samples. Although Yaylacik magnesites are not suitable for making basic refractory bricks, they are widely used as caustic-calcined magnesite in a variety of applications, including animal food, artificial fertilizer, chemical (acid neutralizer), medical and pharmaceutical, and water treatment.

This paper contains the geometallurgical studies, performed for Mineração Rio do Norte bauxites, applied to a selected area belonging to Plateau Saracá III, referring to an exploitation period of one year and three months, approximately. It is worth mentioning that Mineração Rio do Norte has the biggest bauxite operation in Brazil producing 8,500,000 tons of concentrate per year. The studies included wide investigations directed to the final objective of establishing a precise mining and production planning, based on the different behavior of the distinct bauxite ores, when submitted to industrial processes. Geometallurgy can be defined as the study of the regionalization (space distribution) of the metallurgical variables of a mineral deposit. This study involves and integrates all process engineering, geology, geostatistics and mining planning, among others. The development and application of the geometallugical studies to Mineração Rio do Norte were motivated by several reasons and necessities, among them: 1. Improving the forecast of the amount of concentrate (metallurgical mass yield) produced; 2. Improving the equipment operational efficiency, providing a more homogeneous feed; 3. Conducting a more precise material balance that permits a better daily, monthly and yearly production control; 4. Improving the forecasts for the final products generated by each ore type; 5. Obtaining better knowledge of the behavior of several ore types, submitted to the different process unit operations; 6. Promoting adequate ore blending, producing an homogeneous feed during mining operation.

The Batac jig was first introduced in the US for fine coal cleaning in 1973 (Tackett, 1977; Hake, 1976). Since then, a total of six such jigs of various sizes have been installed in five US plants for a total capacity of 2346 t/h. The raw coal size ranges from 19 mm x 0 to 9.5 mm x 0-fraction sizes previously fed to heavy medium cyclones, Deister tables, or water only cyclones. Growing interest in the Batac jig as a replacement for the above equipment is due to the following reasons: • Unlike heavy medium cyclones, no magnetite is required. As a result, the operating cost of the plant is reduced. • The compactness of equipment is unique on a unit ton per hour basis as compared to other equipment. • Solid state electronic control of jig stroke length, frequency, and jig bed depth makes the equipment highly efficient. Installations of Batac jigs in the US as of June 1980 are shown in [Table 1]. Use of the Batac jig is even greater outside the US (Anonymous, 1980; Chen, 1980). Its use is not limited to fine coal but is applied to coarse coal as well, with 102 mm size in the feed (Zimmerman, 1975). In countries where consumption of magnetite associated with the heavy medium system of coal cleaning is considered a waste of iron ore resource, the Batac jig is regarded as the primary choice in the selection of cleaning equipment (Chen, 1980).

During the past decade, approximately 5 billion pounds of explosives were used annually in the United States. Most of this quantity of explosives was used by the mining industry, with coalmining being the dominant application for explosives. Considering the large amount of explosives used, the accident safety record for the mining industry has improved significantly over the past several decades. Although blasting accidents usually represent a small percentage of the total number of mining accidents, they continue to occur and the severity of these accidents is disproportionately high compared to the other mining accidents. This paper is an analysis and summary of mine blasting accidents over the past several decades as they relate to surface coal mine operations. A compilation and review of surface mine blasting accidents from1978 through 2001 was made. The accident data was examined to identify the trends and primary causes, which continue to be blast area security, fly rock, premature blast, and misfires. Approximately 46percent of the causes of surface coal mine blasting accidents are attributed to blast area security, while fly rock, premature blast, and misfires represented an additional 50 percent of the causes. Accident categories were established based on the cause of the accident or the activity that was taking place when the accident happened. A discussion of the accident data is presented to increase hazard awareness and to emphasize safe blasting practices and MSHA requirements concerning mine blasting operations.

The rock salt deposits of the U. S. occur in five major basins: 1) the Eastern Basin (which includes parts of Michigan, Ohio, Pennsylvania, New York, West Virginia, and Ontario) ; 2) the Gulf Coast Basin (the northern rim of which includes parts of Alabama, Mississippi, Louisiana, Arkansas, and Texas, while its southern rim includes parts of the Isthmus of Tehuampetic and the Yucatan Peninsula of Mexico), 3) the Southwestern Salt Basin (which includes parts of Kansas, Colorado, Oklahoma, Texas, and New Mexico), 4) the Williston Basin (which under- lies parts of North Dakota, South Dakota, Montana, and Saskatchewan), and 5) the Green River Basin (whose periphery underlies parts of Wyoming, Utah, and Colorado). The greatest salt production in the U. S. is obtained from the Eastern Basin,-particularly from the areas of Michigan, Ohio, and Ontario. In 1958 the salt production from these areas amounted to 8.7 million tons or 35.3 pct of the combined total produced in the U. S. and Canada. Of the 24,286,000 tons produced by Canada and the United States, 6,443,000 tons were in the form of rock salt from dry mining, while 17,843,000 tons were produced from wells in the form of artificial brine, the result of dissolving the rock salt formation by fresh water. Laboratory tests were conducted by the U.S. Bureau of Mines to determine the respirable dust reduction effectiveness of and interaction between face airflow and water sprays for a continuous miner. Exhausting face ventilation was varied from 3,000 to 9,000 cfm (1.42 to 4.25 m3/sec). Spray-water-flow was varied from 15 to 35 gpm (0.057 to 0.132 m3/min), while nozzle operating pressure was varied from 80 to 200 psi (5.62 to 14.06 kg/cm2). Results from gravimetric dust samples indicated that airflow had the greatest individual impact on reducing dust levels, with return and operator concentrations reduced by as much as 57% and 99%, respectively. Interactions between dust control parameters were found to be significant. Often, these interactions defined a level of application for a control parameter where further increases in that parameter failed to produce additional reductions in dust concentrations. In several cases, increases in a control parameter resulted in higher dust levels at the operator's location. These higher dust levels were attributed to additional rollback and/or airflow turbulence. Regression modeling indicated that increases in airflow to 8,400 cfm (3.96 m3/sec), water flow to 25 gpm (0.095 m3/min), and water pressure to 140 psi (9.84 kg/cm2) typically were beneficial at the operator and return sampling locations.

The European industrial minerals industry and its markets are largely self-sufficient. The companies who are members of the Industrial Minerals Association (IMA-Europe) number around 150 contributing 5 billion Euros to the EU?s GDP and range in size from global publicly quoted corporations to small family owned private companies. Their means and capability to implement sustainable development vary considerably. However the leading companies provide an excellent set of best practices, which IMA as a trade association with recognised core competencies in the field of sustainable development is ideally placed to promulgate throughout its membership. As an active participant in the EU Voluntary Scheme for SDI reporting IMA is not only working to increase the level of response to the SDI questionnaire but is also developing with its members a new sustainable development charter which its members will voluntarily adopt as a guiding principle for their implementation of sustainable development This work will be a consultative process involving all IMA?s section members as well as other trade associations, NGOs and MEPs. Public awareness of the benefits of minerals and their contribution to sustainable development has been raised by IMA?s awareness campaign now being followed by a more targeted programme aimed at MEPs. Further work in the future will consider product stewardship and life-cycle analysis. IMA is already positioning itself with the help of its members to assimilate the minerals industry of the accession territories in the sustainable development process.
