The authors' paper did not explain the facts and reasons why state companies are established and what their role is in international industrial mineral trading. Also. I do not agree with the conclusion implying that the main goal for state companies is to capitalize natural resources. Almost all state companies are founded by certain laws and their activities are arranged by state regulations. Their only aim is to operate mineral deposits for their people and to protect the rights of the people. Although some ore deposits, such as nonstrategic or small, may be exploited by privately owned companies, the state has the right to control the operation and production. Activities of state companies may or may not be widened because of the character of the deposits and the importance of the mineral market involved. For some countries, although governments may occasionally change hands, the policy of the mineral trading system is not affected by this change. There is no doubt that any government desires to make more earnings to increase GNP, when it is involved in operating and trading mines. It wants to produce and sell the finished products, instead of unprocessed ones, if possible. When it is known that some mineral deposits are relatively rare, such as Turkish boron deposits, the government can nationalize the mines to control production and affect the market. If there is an abundance of a certain mineral in the market, the government can cut production and set a floor price, such as Canadian potash. Also, when production of a specific mineral is unique, such as Turkish chromite, the price of such mineral may be set by correspondent government. One may add that if some governments with their state companies produce a certain mineral in a larger amount, they may decide to establish a cartel to protect their production and price. These are the facts followed by government-owned state companies and partially government-owned companies. The reason being charge of many deposits by the state companies is always the same: "protect" the mineral rights of the people.

The Hemersley Ranges are located in the North West Division of Western Australia and extend, approximately, from latitudes 21¦ 30! to 23¦S and longitudes 117¦ to 120¦E. Their mean height above sea level is'. 2,000 feet, and they rise from 600 to 800 feet. above the gen- eral level of the tableland which extends south-east from the coastal town of Roebourne.. Mt. Bruce, the highest peak, is 4,024 feet above sea level. The ranges are intersected by numerous north-flowing streams, dry during the greater part of the year, which have carved deep gorges, and it is in these that the principal deposits of orocidolite outcrop. The presence -of the mineral was first recorded in 1917., but the deposits remained untouched until 1937 when reports of a strong market demand for-croeido lice resulted in considerable prospecting and mining activity, particularly in Yampire, Wittenoom and Daleis Gorges. . It was established also that the blue asbestos belt extended from Willi- Wolli Springs north-west to Millstream Station, i.e.,-over a.:length of 180 miles and a width of 20 to 30 miles. A number of attempts were made to develop aid treat the Yampire and Wittenoom'Gorge deposits from 1938 onwards, but, for a ,variety of reasons, none of these-proved successful. Current production,. is wholly by Australian Blue Asbestos Pty. Limited at Wittenoom Gorge. This company commenced operations at the Wittenoom Mine in 1946, with an output of 601.8 long tons of- fibre,. and later transferred tb the Colonial Mine about one mile to the north-west. Output has been increased steadily to an' average of 12,000 to 14.,000.. long tons; per annum over the past six years. Historically the insurance industry's involvement in any project has been relatively late in the process. Often it was a case of the last item to be ticked off the checklist has been to ensure that the insurance is in place. However, in more recent times insurers have imposed more restrictions on the cover they are prepared to provide, which has in some cases necessitated a change in the contracting structure to accommodate the insurance policy(ies). In addition, changing contractual practices have changed the allocation of risk between the various parties involved. This calls for a more proactive approach to the design and implementation of an insurance program for both the construction and operational phases of any resource project. This paper explores how a risk managed approach to the design and implementation of an insurance program for a resource project can align itself with current management approaches to project development. From the authors' experience, this approach is best adopted early on in the project (often in conjunction with the bankable feasibility study) and follows AZ/NZS4360 to objectively examine and compare a wide range of risk exposures of the project in a time-effective manner across the following areas: ? personnel; ? environment; ? general management; ? compliance - legislation, systems, protocols; ? asset management; ? change management; ? financial impacts to the organisation; ? products/services; ? service delivery; and ? technology. Having identified and then analysed the risk exposures according to common consequence and likelihood ratings the next step is to develop a risk map of all considered exposures. The true value of this approach lies in the development and implementation of a risk treatment plan for identified exposures where the exposure is unacceptable. The plans will lead to the optimal solution to the appropriate risk prevention, risk mitigation and risk transfer options available. This paper also examines other benefits to the project that may arise from adopting a risk managed approach in addition to the ability to design an insurance program which recognises the exposures and the ability of the organisation (and other project parties) to retain risk.

Copper has frequently been recommended as an alloying element for steel and the precipitation-hardening of steels containing from 1 to 2 per cent copper has been studied by a number of investigators. The straight copper steels, however, have not been used extensively and little advantage has been taken of the precipitation-hardening of complex steels containing appreciable amounts of copper. It is difficult to produce a satisfactory surface on the straight copper steels and undoubtedly this has discouraged their use. During recent years a number of steels containing enough copper to make them susceptible to precipitation-hardening have been put on the market. These steels belong to the group usually referred to as "low-alloy high-tensile " steels. They were designed for use in the " hot-rolled" condition; transportation equipment and large structures that cannot be readily heat-treated have been their chief application. Little emphasis has been placed on the possibility of strengthening those containing substantial amounts of copper by precipitation-hardening. The present investigation was undertaken to determine the precipitation-hardening characteristic of one of the "low-alloy steels." Previous Work The first complete study of the effect of time and temperature on the precipitation-hardening of plain copper steels was made by Nehll in 1930. At about the same time Bucholtz and Koster2 studied copper-chromium steels but did not determine the relation between time and temperature to produce maximum hardening. Later, Smith and Palmer3 determined the rate of hardening at various temperatures for two I per cent copper steels containing different amounts of carbon. Their tests indicated that the higher carbon content decreased the rate of hardening. They made tests on many steels containing other alloying elements in addition to copper, but did not determine the time-temperature relationship for maximum hardening for any of the complex steels. Norton,4 in studying the limit of solid solubility of copper in iron, determined the time for maximum hardening of a 2.06 per cent Cu iron

Safety reasons render necessary the advanced calculation of the amount of methane degassing from a longwall in the scope of the ventilation planning of mines. Today empirical methods, which are based on observations of operational procedures, are used for the calculation of the amount of methane. Despite of constant improvement those calculations are not always sufficient. In particular calculations which are based on operational facts but not proved by experience are not reliable. Most of all these calculation procedures lack physical-analytical descriptions of the procedure itself, presenting only the effects on important parameters such as the distance between seams in the roof or floor or gas pressure. Tschersich [Tschersich 961 developed an analytical model for an advanced calculation by analysing the degassing of seams in the roof and floor and the physical parameters of gasflow. This model might correct the lacks of existing procedures and improve the precision and reliability of additional calculations. The model simulates the emission record in seams of the roof and the floor. It takes into account not only a multitude of parameters such as the distance to adjacent seams and gas pressure but also the depth of seams, gas content, rank of carbonification, rock temperature, face advance rate, initial and succeeding mining and the face length. In order to comprehend and to verify those correlations we extended the model of Tschersich and programmed this enlarged model using the computer language C++. Aim of this research is to guarantee a much higher accuracy in calculating methane emission caused by mining. The improved planning is expected to result in more safety and better prevention of high methane con- tent in ventilation as well as in a better use of the capacity of the mining equipment. The application [Drijver, lnderst 961 of the ex- tended model will also be very useful in the course of research projects as it allows computer simulation, i.e. in-situ research can be extensively limited or even replaced.

John Dasher (Materials and Processes Engineer, Crucible Steel Co. of America, Pittsburgh, Pa.) The authors are to be congratulated for their excellent work, dramatic results, and persuasive explanation on the neglected subject of the temperature variable in soap flotation. The explanation includes why heat is helpful in conditioning and why heat is helpful in flotation. This is a fine start, but I hope the work will be continued to show which is the major effect. In the work of Noman and Dash er(1) it was found that substantially all the benefit of heat came from the conditioning step, and that results were much better if a thick pulp was conditioned hot and then diluted with unheated (or less heated) water for flotation (or agglomerate tabling) than if the same quantity of heat was used to condition and float at some intermediate temperature. In other words, heat for conditioning gives a Rood return, but additional heat for dilution water is near or beyond the point of diminishing return. Strathmore R. B. Cooke, lwao lawsaki, and Hyung Su0p Choi (Authors' Reply) Mr. Dasher'skind comments on our paper are appreciated. In view of the relative simplicity of empirical investigationsof the temperature variable upon conditioning and flotation, it ispuzzling why the subject is so neglected. Our work, being sub sidiary to the main investigation of the effect of structure of fatty acid collectorsupon iron ore flotation, was quite restricted, but we intend to return to the subject as soon as possible. Mr. Dasher's point, that given a certain number of calories it is better to invest them for conditioning in a thick pulp rather than to spread them out for both conditioning and flotation operations, is well taken and cannot be argued. On the other hand there is no question that high temperature during the flotation of iron ores induces superior frothing characteristics, and, in particular, greatly augments the rate of flotation and markedly decreases the time required for "difficult" particles to float.

The area comprising what is geographically termed "Central Texas" was somewhat less active in 1934 than in 1933. The year saw the completion of 182 dry holes and only 74 producing wells. Bexar, Williamson and Bastrop counties, with active fields such as Yturri-Southton, Byersville, North Dale and Cedar Creek contributed a majority of the new oil wells. Hilbig, in Bastrop County, 1933's most important discovery in the district, saw no development during the current year. New fields opened in 1934 were Byersville, a serpentine intrusion in Williamson County, and Manda, producing from similar material in Travis County. Like most of the other serpentine plugs, neither gives promise of covering a very large area. Other active counties were Bexar, Bastrop and Caldwell, although successful operations in each of them were limited to the old fields. The location of producing fields is shown on Fig. 1. New Fields Byersvil1e.—Late in 1933, Fritz Fuchs completed Zeischang No. 1, eight miles south of Taylor, Williamson County, for an initial production of 25 bbl. per day. The oil is 37" B6. A.P.I. gravity and is from Serpentine formation at approximately 900 ft. Additional drilling was carried on in 1934, and at the end of the year 18 producing wells had been completed, proving about 200 acres. Manda.—The Manda field, or Kimbro field as it is termed by some, received its first production Sept. 10, 1934, when the Humble Oil & Refining Co. completed No. 1 C. J. Peterson as an 8-bbl. oil well. The new field is near Littig, in eastern Travis County, and is about 15 miles northeast of Austin. Production is found in serpentine formation between 650 and 750 ft. The same company's No. 1 Buck Christian, second well in the field, flowed 190 bbl. per day through a ?-in choke. Although only a small area has been definitely proven it is expected that present drilling will provide extensions in several directions.

"Biological cementation of the Mandena heavy mineral sand deposit in Madagascar was causing difficulty in dredge mining and hence in planning and control of production rates. An investigation was initiated to better evaluate the geotechnical properties of the orebody by defining the distribution and geotechnical properties of the cemented strata, in order to generate a site-specific geotechnical model for the deposit. The geotechnical characterization was developed by an integrated approach using several ground investigation techniques such as piezocone (CPTu) testing, geotechnical drilling, standard penetration testing (SPT), as well as laboratory testing. The final outcomes of the investigation included a 3D geotechnical model showing the distribution and extent of the cemented areas, as well as the typical geotechnical parameter ranges associated with each of the defined geotechnical units. The interpretations developed were incorporated into the mine and production planning to ultimately optimize operational planning and control.IntroductionQIT Madagascar Minerals (QMM) is a heavy mineral sand mining operation at Mandena, near Fort Dauphin in Madagascar. During the final planning and commissioning stages of the project, the need to fully characterize the unusual geotechnical conditions was identified and a geotechnical investigation became necessary.Nature of the problemDuring the commissioning phase it was found that mining production was being hampered by biologically cemented/indurated layers encountered within the sands. Closer inspection of the indurated horizons in the dredging face revealed that these layers contain a high loading of bacteria and fungi. It appears that the bacteria produce an extracellular (outside the cell) polysaccharide (i.e. sugar and carbon salts), which form a gelling biofilm to trap nutrients. There are a number of different bacteria. The fungi, on the other hand, produce a network of fibrous strands that bind the sand grains together. Thus both bacteria and fungi probably contribute to the ‘apparent cohesive’ strength or binding of the indurated sand (Lynn, 2008)."

The use of the centrifuge for dewaxing lubricating oils grew out of the effort to secure better results than had been attained by the common "cold settling" process. This process was the only known method for dewaxing steam refined cylinder stock (600" F. fire test), the product known as "bright stock" being commonlyused for building up "pressed," i.e., dewaxed neutrals of, say, 200-sec. viscosity [to a higher value. The process consisted of mixing the cylinder stock with approximately one and one-half times its volume of naphtha, heating, to dissolve completely all the oil and wax and then slowly chilling to about 15" F. in large insulated tanks. This caused the wax to precipitate. It was allowed to settle out by gravity. The supernatant liquid was then drawn off and the naphtha distilled off, leaving a still residue of bright stock. The sediment from the settling, of a slushy nature, was withdrawn. After removing the naphtha by distillation the residue was petrolatum. At some point in the process, preferably after the dilution but before chilling, the mixture was decolored by percolation through fuller's earth. The finished bright stock produced by this process had a cold test of about 50" F. Efforts to improve this by chilling to a lower temperature resulted in a considerable reduction in yield, and increased uncertainty of settling. Even when chilling to 15" F. it was not uncommon to find that after a week's waiting a tank had not settled. It was then necessary to heat and rechill. This uncertainty was a serious problem; in one case a refinery superintendent had men riveters hold pneumatic hammers against the tank for hours, hoping thus to cause agglomeration and settling of the wax. Yields of bright stock above 70 per cent, were uncommon. History of Centrifugal Application It is not surprising, therefore, that many attempts were made to improve upon the results obtained by cold settling. George H. It is to be regretted that the data respecting the use of dry-air blast, which were presented to the Iron and Steel Institute at its meeting in the United States, in October, 1904, should have been restricted to the period from August 25th to September 9th inclusive, and from September 17th to 30th inclusive. In order to present the paper at all it was found necessary to limit the record of operations to the period above stated. It appears from the reported discussion that some of those who took part felt themselves to be at a disadvantage, in considering the economies secured through the use of dry-air blast, by reason of the fact that the data presented covered so short a period. It is the purpose of this communication to present in detail the record of operations of the Isabella Furnaces from November, 1904, to March, 1905, inclusive, as shown by the furnace-records. The month of October, 1904, is not included, as the furnace using dry-air blast was stopped several times for repairs; and while the record was a very good one considering these interruptions, yet it was not a continuous one. The record for Furnace No. 1 using dry-air blast, and the comparison with Furnace No. 3 using natural air for the month of November, 1904, is set forth in Table I. By a reference to my former paper it will be noted that the month of November is the beginning in this country of the winter period, when the atmosphere decreases rapidly in humidity. The month of October being the transition month in the autumn and April in the spring, and furnaces using natu-ral air approach more closely, from November on, to the conditions obtained by the use of dry-air blast. The present war in Europe seems to have stimulated the demand for quicksilver. In July last, the price ranged around $35 per flask of 75 Ib., while to-day it seems to fluctuate between $47.50 and $50. The use of quicksilver in the form of fulminate, containing 70 per cent., and as corrosive sublimate, containing 73.8 per cent., must be extensive and a further market advance may be expected. With such an advance, some revival in quicksilver mining may be looked for, particularly in California, where many abandoned properties exist. What can be done with low-grade quicksilver ores under favorable conditions, particularly with low mining cost, may be seen from the following description of the Oceanic mine, near San Luis Obispo, Cal. Its operations date back to 1876, when rich sand ores were discovered. In three years 7,400 flasks of quicksilver were produced, but since then the deposit has been worked only sporadically . Until two years ago various attempts had been made by the Oceanic Quicksilver Co. to mine the more refractory "mud rock," which was encountered lying beyond the " sand rock." Mud and sand rock in varying quantities were treated together, with poor results, but operations were successful with sand rock of fair percentage. About two years ago, when all the sand rock had been exhausted, Murray Innes purchased the Oceanic mine. He found large quantities of low-grade mud rock, varying from 6 to 8 Ib. of quicksilver per ton, which at the prevailing low price of quicksilver demanded very cheap mining costs, in conjunction with high but cheap metallurgical extraction. At that time the extraction of quicksilver from mud rock ranged between 40 and 50 per cent., as far as I am able to learn. The Giesche Spas Akcyjna, in Polish Upper Silesia, produces zinc, lead and coal, together with many byproducts emanating from the zinc-lead ores. The development of the concern in the 230 years of its existence has been influenced not only by metallurgical improvements but also to an unusual extent by political and economic factors. The company was founded by George Giesche, who was born in 1653 and died in 1716, and who in 1704 received from Emperor Leopold I the exclusive privilege of mining and selling galmei1 in Silesia. His children, who retained the business, gave the name to the firm—George von Giesches Erben. After 1802 modifications in the Prussian mining and corporation laws limited the rights formerly enjoyed. The family concern became a corporation and expanded its activities, building smelters and opening new mines. The establishment of the present eastern boundary of Germany resulted in the transfer of nationality of a large part of the mines and surface plants to Poland, which, in turn, necessitated the formation of a Polish company, the Giesche Spólka Akcyjna. The first concentrators at the Bleischarley mine were built between 1854 and 1860 and owing to dual ownership were two in number. They were used only for the treatment of galena. In 1873 a concentrator was built for the treatment of sulfide ore preparatory to treatment in the Recke roasting plant, which was the first to have an acid plant for recovery of the sulfur gas. This concentrator was replaccd by a larger one in 1888, when the present orebody was opened up. At the same time, a mill was built for the treatment of the galmei. The concentration of the sulfide ore resulted in a much higher grade of feed for the zinc plants after the first troublesome steps of the roasting process had been worked out. Consequently, the oxide ore in its primitively concentrated state was no longer highly valued as a retort charge. and steps had to be taken to increase its zinc content.

The removal of mine-water by hoisting in tanks instead of pumping, while somewhat a reversion to the methods of the ancients, has come very rapidly into favor in the anthracite region of Pennsylvania during the past few years. In fact, so much so, that at the present time there are at least eight large collieries at which all the water is hoisted, and six more plants are in preparation. The particulars of the plants in operation and under construction, as far as decided on, are given in the tables on pages 107 and 108. Besides these, the Delaware, Lackawanna and Western R.R. Co. is constructing a hoist of large capacity for a depth approximating 500 feet, to be located in the Keyser Valley, near Scranton. The hoists will be driven by electric motors, geared directly to the sheaves. The Lehigh Valley Coal Company is planning a large hoist for the Packer collieries in the Shenandoah district, but no work has been done on this as yet. The earliest regular hoisting, I believe, mas done by means of semi-cylindrical tanks (Fig. 1) at the Nanticoke collieries of the Susquehanna Coal Company. These tanks were attached under the regular shaft-carriages, taking in water through six large clack-valves in the bottom, and discharging through an endgate opened by a lever which was operated by a guide-piece on the shaft head-frame. These tanks were designed July, 1880, by the late J. H. Bowden, one of the very early members of the Institute. Similar tanks are still used in emergencies at the Nos. 1, 2, 3 and 6 shafts of the company. The objections to. their use were: that water could only be hoisted during the night-shift, or when the shafts were not in use for hoisting coal, thus requiring a very large sump, and greatly limiting the water capacity of the plants; that the alternate wetting and drying

The basic objectives of current EU waste policy are to prevent waste and promote re-use, recycling and recovery to reduce negative environmental impact (2008/98/EC). In this paper, we focus on drivers and barriers for sustainable development by decreasing amount of waste and increasing material efficiency. Main target is to understand what are the most efficient drivers for environmental friendly decision making for reasonable consumption and use of raw materials. Environmental control instruments usually mean those actions the regulatory authority uses to control and limit environmentally harmful behavior of companies. A major change in the environmental control system took place in the 1980s with the focus moving from specific environmental issues to the environment as a whole. The environmental control system i.e. the legal (administrative), economic and informative instruments focuses on prevention. Before and still, the legislation is one of the main drivers in improving material efficiency. In this paper, we focus on drivers and barriers for effective industrial material use, and mainly on drivers. The objective of this study is to analyze how the drivers are working and are there any possibilities to influence on those. Our aim is also to introduce few examples of the existing supply chains and the drivers for better environmental performance and material efficiency. These examples are also compared with ideal reference scenarios. Our main research question in this article is: ?Are the financial issues the most important driver for environmental friendly strategic decisions?? In addition, retell the story from another perspective: ?The most important barrier for environmental friendly innovations seem to be the investment cost, the high risk involved in committing capital to unproven technology.? Other drivers, like the corporate social responsibility, stakeholder pressure, and general public pressure, will also affect the final decision. SIX years have passed since the last grindability table was published.' In that time the list has been increased with many new tests, and the development of the new Third Theory of Comminution2 has made possible the reduction of all results to a consistent work index value. In this tabulation all grindability and crushability test results are given in terms of the work index, with formulas for reversion to the older units if desired. The average values for 57 different classes of materials are listed in Table I. The total number of work index values listed is 1211, and the overall average work index is 14.42. The complete tabulation, with each test listed alphabetically both under material type and under company name, can be obtained by writing to the Allis-Chalmers Manufacturing Co., Processing Machinery Department, Milwaukee 1, Wisconsin. The work index Wi is the calculated total work input in kilowatt-hours per short ton required to re- duce from theoretically infinite particle size to 80 pct passing 100 microns, or to approximately 67 pct passing 200 mesh. The work inputs required per ton for the same size reduction of different materials are directly proportional to their work indexes, and according to the Third Theory the work input per ton is inversely proportional to the square root of the diameter of the product particles. Some of the parameters affecting the elution of gold from freshly loaded activated carbon using pure water as an eluant were studied. The procedure involved pretreatment of the gold-loaded activated carbon with a strong reagent of sodium cyanide and sodium hydroxide, followed by elution of the gold with water. Gold-loaded carbon obtained from three different sources was studied. It was shown that the elution temperature was the most critical parameter, and column operation at I !OCC (gauge pressure of 50 to 100 kPa) is suggested. The effects of variations in the concentration of sodium cyanide required for the pretreatment of loaded carbon and of variations in elution flowrate were also investigated. Both these parameters were found to have only a marginal effect on the efficiency of gold elution. The investigation also indicated that gold-elution rates were affected to a considerable degree by the particle size of the carbon concerned. Higher elution flowrates could be used when carbons of finer particle size were eluted. A modified eluate-collection procedure was also developed during the course of the investigation. Oven-drying of the loaded carbon was shown to have little or no effect on the efficiency of the subsequent gold elution. The calcium and silica contents of the various carbon samples were also determined. It was immediately evident that the calcium content was very considerable in the case of loaded carbons originating from carbon-in-pulp operations. Calcium concentration was particularly high where air agitation had been employed in the carbon-contacting circuit. To some degree, the calcium build-up explains the serious carbon fouling taking place, resulting in a decreased efficiency of gold adsorption. The fouling problem was found to be less severe when mechanical agitation was used. No poisoning by calcium carbonate was observed where the pregnant solution had been acidified before it was contacted with the carbon.

The dew point of natural gas which has been in equilibrium with gas hydrates has been reported to be lower than that obtained for natural gas in equilibrium with water1,? Hammerschmidt' reports a lowering of the dew point of 13 F for a natural gas in equilibrium with hydrate at 380 F and 525 psi. Records and Seely2 likewise show that the dew point of gas leaving hydrate separators' is as much as 150 F below the separator temperature. This paper presents the reasons for the observed differences between the equilibrium temperatures and the dew point temperatures. Descriptions of the dew point determination by the Bureau of Mines and ASTM tester3 indicate that the dew point is taken as the temperature at which liquid water droplets first begin to appear on the cooled mirror surface even though the temperatures involved are below that required for the formation of gas hydrates or ice. MARINGER and schwopel have investigated the internal friction of high-purity molybdenum. After light tensile deformation, they observed internal-friction peaks at about 230° to 290°C, 310" to 370°C, and 820° to 870°C, which they have attributed to the interstitials carbon and nitrogen, and to stress relaxation across grain boundaries, respectively. The electron-beam melting technique has been successfully applied to refractory metals including molybdenum. By this technique single crystals and higher-purity levels than those of commercial molybdenum are readily obtained. Since electron-beam processed molybdenum possesses such desirable qualities, it seems reasonable to determine: u) if internal-friction peaks do exist in these single crystals, and b) if so, whether or not these peaks can possibly be attributed to the motion of specific interstitials. The molybdenum crystal used in this investigation received four melting passes in the electron-beam furnace. This crystal was about 11 in. long and had an orientation 4 deg from the [loo]. The process of making wire consisted of grinding the crystal rod to a diameter of 0.040 in. and then electropolishing to a final diameter of 0.030 in. Since Maringer and schwopel have indicated that the peak at 230" to 290°C may be due to the presence of carbon, the wire was cut into two equal lengths and one length was carburized prior to the internal-friction measurements. The critical condition necessary for the controlled addition of carbon proved to be a difficult problem. Therefore, a simpler nonequilibrium method was used. This consisted of carburizing at 2000°C in graphite powder to obtain a case, annealing at higher temperatures in vacuum to partially dissolve carbon into the molybdenum, and then removing the remaining case by dissolving it elec-trolytically. After this treatment, metallographic examination of a small section of the specimen revealed carbides in the matrix. Vacuum fusion and carbon analyses for both the virgin (as melted) and carburized specimens are given in Table I. Ores of the Mammoth mining district, some 45 miles northeast of Tucson, Arizona, are treated by Mammoth-St. Anthony, Ltd. The ores now treated come from a complex system of veins and faults, comprising three mines, in close proximity: The Mohawk, Mammoth and Collins. The ore treated in the past was oxide ore, which contains economic amounts of gold, silver, lead, molybdenum, and vanadium (as wulfenite and vanadanite). The lead-zinc sulphide ore has never been treated before. The Ore The sulphide ore contains galena, sphalerite, marmatite, pyrite and some chal-copyrite, covellite, chalcocite and bornite, as well as small amounts of gold and silver. The value of the ore is principally in the lead and zinc content. The lead-zinc sulphides are substantially liberated at a minus 65-mesh grind. However, a large part of the chalcopyrite and other copper minerals is not freed, but remains as pin points on the sphalerite. Economically, the copper is unimportant. The gangue is a rhyolite granite, with very little limestone. There is no molybdenum or vanadikm in the sulphide ore. History of Sulphide Treatment Test work on samples of the sulphide ore was conducted by several equipment companies, the Arizona Bureau of Mines and the company's laboratory. Results of this test work indicated that for some reason, which at the time could not be explained, recoveries would be only about 65 per cent lead and 50 per cent zinc. Notwithstanding this, because of the nation's need for metals, the management built a 150-ton treatment plant. The mill was started in June 1942. During December 1942, using the standard method of treating lead-zinc ore, the monthly results were as shown in Table I. These results were poor. Too much lead was in the zinc concentrate, and too much zinc in the lead concentrate. It should be noted here. that prior to December attempts were made to depress the sphalerite with large and varied amounts of cyanide, zinc sulphate, and sodium sulphite with poor results.
