It is concluded that land-based mineral resources will be adequate for most minerals in the immediate future, but in the long term more minerals will come from offshore locations. Because the oceans are international and can transport pollution, international control of offshore workings will be necessary. In the UK and similarly highly developed areas, the working of low-value bulk minerals will create increasing problems in urban development and countryside preservation. Much more information should be published on standards to be adopted and their costs, if emotional social pressures founded on ignorance are to be avoided. The Town and Country Planning Acts have greatly improved the environmental quality in Britain in relation to mineral working. In the long term conservation of some minerals in short supply may be necessary on a national or international basis. Much research is required for the determination of adequate criteria and standards for the preservation of environmental quality in the mineral industry. New local, national and international legislation will be required and the adoption of voluntary standards by trade associations should be encouraged wherever appropriate

THE ceramic group of industries is comprised of those engaged in the manufacture of cement, glass, artificial abrasives, whiteware, including earthenware, stoneware, porcelain tableware, porcelain sanitary ware, electrical porcelain, floor and wall tile, porcelain enamel on metals, refractories of all kinds, sewer-pipe and structural clay products, such as terra cotta, brick, and hollow tile. The various sub-divisions of the industry produce a wide range of articles on which we depend for our creature comforts from day to day, perhaps to a greater extent than we generally realize. The industry, in turn, depends on a great number of minerals, and chemical products derived from minerals, and it is the object of this brief paper to present a list of these with notes indicating the particular applications. In order to bring home the importance of the industry to your daily life, stop and consider the many things around you accepted as a matter of course. Cement provides the smooth surfaces of many of our highways, city streets, and sidewalks. It enters into nearly all types of construction, alone or in combination with other clay products. Glass we hardly appreciate because we can see through it so easily, but it is there to serve us in windows, doors, and other light-transmitting structures. Glass is the universal means of transporting liquids and beverages, our beverages are usually served in it, and, with the recent development in fine spun glass textiles, there is a possibility of glass clothing in the future. Chinaware, a general term for table dishes, may be earthenware (not vitrified), semi-porcelain, or bone china, but it is before us three or more times a day ?and we seldom think of the minerals that have made these products possible. Floor tile, wall tile, and other ceramic specialties for interior and exterior use and decoration please the eye and provide sanitary surroundings.

"Strategies to improve performance in mining production, maintenance and mineral processing operations have evolved over time from straightforward time studies of individual machine performance in the 1960s-1970s to more sophisticated and better focused statistical and financial tools that have emerged in the 1980s-1990s. These newer strategies fall under the broad descriptive category of operational excellence.Operational excellence is the term that embodies a number of performance evaluating strategies, the most popular and relevant to mining include the following:• Six sigma for addressing errors within mining or milling process and work standards.• Lean manufacturing to optimize organizational and operational performance through continuous improvement.There are other strategies that can be applied as well and this paper is not focused on a review of the pros and cons of any one strategy. However, the common threads in these strategies embody the expectation that expected results from these efforts can be quantified and that value will positively benefit the targeted work process, organizational unit, equipment deployment or time schedule when applied to it as part of continuous improvement efforts.The priority for proceeding with any one or more of these efforts is based on the calculated net value of the required resources to make the change versus the estimated value gained. The practice is identified as the value mapping process.This discussion summarizes the value mapping process methodology used at a mature uranium mine and mill in northern Canada to work through the myriad of potential improvement efforts available through the operational excellence process for continuous improvement."

The Spitzenberg Tunnel is a 600 m (1,970 ft) long twin tube motorway tunnel on Germany’s Autobahn A44 between Kassel and Eisenach. Since flexibility was considered to be very important in the continuously changing geological conditions, NATM was chosen as the construction method. When passing an old quarry with only 1,80 m (6 ft) of overburden, the excavation works became extraordinarily challenging. This paper not only describes the special methods, like double sidewall drifts and pipe umbrellas applied in this zone but also highlights the cooperation between the parties involved, which in combination made the project a joint success.

O objetivo deste projeto foi elevar a produtividade do pátio de placas do Laminador de Tiras a Quente da ArcelorMittal Tubarão através da alteração do processo de sequenciamento do Laminador de Tiras a Quente com a criação do processo de realocação de placas após a formação da chance de laminação. O trabalho iniciouse com a definição de regras metalúrgicas de realocação de materiais e definição dos critérios operacionais e de atendimento a pedidos para posteriormente ser desenvolvido o software de otimização para a execução da realocação automática de placas na chance de laminação com foco na redução de movimentações no pátio do Laminador de Tiras a Quente. Com a implantação do processo/sistema espera-se conseguir uma redução de aproximadamente 60% nas movimentações de placas para formação da chance de laminação, conforme demonstrado nas simulações com dados reais e consequentemente reduzindo número de paradas de forno em função de problemas de produtividade do pátio de placas visando o aumento da produção do Laminador de Tiras a Quente em torno de 15 Kt/ano.

Artisanal and small-scale underground gold mining in Colombia plays a significant role in the country’s economy, but it faces persistent occupational hazards that threaten worker safety. Despite mining economic contributions, outdated technologies, limited risk management practices, and insufficient regulatory enforcement have led to recurring workplace accidents, many of which have been fatal. This study presents a systematic review of mining-related accidents over the last decade. Through geo-referenced analysis, high-risk municipalities were identified, and the frequency of accidents was correlated with the mining legal status and operational practices of these municipalities. The findings underscore the urgent need for evidencebased interventions that are tailored to the country’s unique mining context. Ultimately, this research contributes to the global discourse on mining safety by highlighting practical pathways to reduce occupational risks and promote safer, healthier workplaces in resource-constrained environments.

The Cu-Co ore studied here belongs to the oxide type. The oxidation rates of copper and cobalt are69.30% and 78.78%, respectively. The content of Cu in ROM is 1.34% and that of Co is 0.096%. The ore contains 4.64% carbon.Based on the process mineralogy and previous metallurgy tests, the principalprocess flow-sheet of ?grinding fines 80% -0.074mm, sulphide flotation followed by oxide flotation, and flash flotation for oxides? has been determined.The handling of carbon is determined through tests. The depressant PNL-1 depressed carbon effectively, improved the recovery of sulphide minerals and reduced the reagents consumption.The operation of the flow-sheet was also changed to better at the same time. Redução dos custos de operação e a produção de aço com menor impacto ambiental são diretrizes unânimes na siderurgia atual. A tecnologia das Turbinas de Recuperação de Topo (Top Recovery Turbines – TRT) é um aliado importante para seguir nessas direções. As TRTs produzem energia elétrica a partir do gás de alta pressão proveniente do topo dos Altos Fornos, gerando energia elétrica sem impacto em emissões. Durante a campanha de operação da turbina, a mesma pode perder eficiência operacional devido a, dentre outros, deposição sobre as palhetas. Com o intuito de melhorar o desempenho da turbina estabilizando sua geração durante toda sua campanha, foi desenvolvido um trabalho de dosagem de polímero dispersante na água de spray da turbina (para turbinas com tecnologia de água de spray na admissão do gás). A dosagem do polímero dispersante visa reduzir a deposição e incrustração nas palhetas, reduzindo assim a perda de performance durante a campanha causadas pelo incremento de massa nas palhetas. Os resultados alcançados em um teste de campo em uma siderúrgica no Brasil foram um incremento de 52% na geração durante a campanha onde o polímero dispersante foi aplicado. Com a aplicação do polímero, uma melhora significativa na confiabilidade e performance da turbina assim como a possibilidade da redução no consumo de água foram atingidos

For the REM (Réseau Express Métropolitain) project, a 2500 m tunnel was built using a tunnel boring machine (TBM) under the Montreal Pierre Elliott Trudeau Airport (ADM). Although the geology under the Montreal Airport (ADM) would have been suitable for an excavation with a hard rock machine, the rst section reuired an earth pressure balance (EPB) TBM due to the soft soil located under wetlands. After excavating 280 m, the TBM was blocked in a transition zone of unconsolidated, water-bearing soils directly above the underlying bedrock. A free air intervention was not possible due to these geological conditions. After several failed attempts to create a slurry cake for hyperbaric interventions, a ground freezing system was designed and implemented, incorporating angled pipes drilled from outside the wetlands to directly in front of the cutterhead. This paper discusses the engineering reuired to form a frozen, water-tight zone in front of the cutterhead using liuid nitrogen. It also describes the complex method of replacing the disc cutters while holding the ground freezing system active in a manner protecting the health and safety of the workers.

The Problem The Don deposit is a series of two sub-vertical zones that pose a number of challenges with respect to modeling and interpolation. The first challenge is that, based on data and observations, the mineralization and, more importantly, the grade is layered or banded and is stratigraphically controlled. The second challenge is that, due to the undulations of the deposit and extreme changes in dip, using a standard oriented ellipse to guide the estimation process is not appropriate and does not result in an estimate that is representative on a local scale. In order to solve this problem an adapted methodology of relative elevation modelling, has been devised to effectively model and estimate deposits faced with these challenges. "The Earth’s properties, composition and structure ahead of a tunnel boring machine (TBM) should be mapped for hazard assessment during excavation. We study the use of seismic-exploration techniques for this purpose. We focus on a seismic system for soft soils, where shear waves are better and easier to interpret than compressional waves, as has been shown over the last decade. The system is intended to be deployed on the machine’s cutter head, with a few seismic sources and sufficiently many seismic sensors to tackle spatial variability and noise characteristics. An important property of the newly developed system is its ability to process data with very little human interaction. Images need to be available in near real time, without human interactions slowing down the imaging process. This can be achieved by employing Full Waveform Inversion, which minimizes the difference between modeled and observed data. Because this method may suffer from local minima in the cost function if the data lack low-frequency information, we employ a dedicated seismic source that can generate sufficiently low frequencies for the relevant length scales. With data acquired in a number of field settings that mimic realistic TBM configurations, we show that the designed seismic system can successfully look ahead of the TBM and offers a valuable capability to support decision-making during tunnel excavation. INTRODUCTION While excavating a tunnel with a Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM), the geology and the ground conditions along the planned tunnel trajectory need to be investigated in order to safely and efficiently carry out the underground operations. This entails detecting the occurrence of boulders, foundations, pipes and faults, necessary to prevent hazards and time-consuming delays in the tunnel boring operations. In order to facilitate ground prediction ahead of a TBM, techniques as used in seismic exploration can be deployed. Two components common to seismic-exploration techniques are data acquisition and processing, the latter including inversion. We will discuss each of these for the application to tunnel excavation with TBM, in particular for soft soils."

Ground control is critical to the success of a safe and productive underground stone mining operation. The primary focus of the ground control engineer is the stability of the roof or back; development and benched pillar stability; stability of the sill pillar between vertically adjacent mining levels; and floor stability. Roof stability begins with the selection of a stable back horizon based on the presence of a thin shale parting, stylolite or other discontinuity from which the production shot can easily peel away, leaving a stable back stratum. Bed thickness, fracture spacing, jointing and the material properties of the roof strata control the room width; the decision whether to bolt the roof; the bolt length, type and diameter; and the spacing of the roof support. Horizontal stress controls the header and crosscut azimuth. The mine operator should avoid driving perpendicular to the maximum horizontal stress direction. Where this is unavoidable, narrowing the opening width, narrowing pillar centers, increasing the support density and using three-way intersections are alternatives to remediate shearing along the roof-rib interface. Stable pillar dimensions depend upon the interaction of the vertical stress resulting from overburden thickness and multiple-level interaction of overlying level or levels; the mining height during development and the final mining height after floor shots are taken during benching; the presence of faults, folds or joints passing through the pillar; and limestone lithology, recognizing that the presence of oolitic bands, shale partings, joints and bentonite beds creates zones of weakness that can destabilize an otherwise competent pillar. Floor stability is typically not a significant issue for underground stone mines because the bearing capacity of the stone typically exceeds the vertical pressure transferred through the pillar. However, floor heave can be a ground control issue where shale partings, moisture-sensitive strata, weak stone bands or horizontal stress is present. Roof stability and pillar stability problems can be initiated as the floor heave enables the pillar and roof to settle. To illustrate these ground control issues, this paper presents four case histories that are a mix of ground failures and successful mining. The focus is on the geotechnical data required for roof, pillar and floor design and stability analysis.

"X-ray transmission (XRT) sorting has been introduced into the minerals industry in 2006 and has found various applications in diamonds, industrial minerals and metal ore processing since. The technology offers planar projections of the atomic density of single particles similar to the principle known from airport scanners, but being capable of treating up to 150tph per metre working width. In 2010, a pilot operation using a belt-type sensor-based sorter went into production at the Mittersill mine to treat the fraction 16-28mm. After an optimisation phase, the results were superseding expectations and therefore in 2012 a bigger production plant was set up. Two XRT-based sorters are parallel in operation since. One is treating the fine fraction 16-30mm while the other one is treating the coarser fraction 30-60mm after the secondary crushing stage. The XRT sorters are operated with the objective to reject barren waste before it enters the mill and flotation plant. 105,000tpa of waste material are rejected per year and can be sold as aggregate for road construction. This means that about 22% of the run-of-mine ore are rejected at an early stage with a waste reject grade lower than 0.03wt%WO3. The installation has not only led to lower specific operating costs but also led to reduced tailings disposal in an environmentally sensitive area. This allows the mine to reduce its headgrade which allows for a longer mine life. Alternatively it is possible to produce more tungsten concentrate, which is delivered to the smelter. This article will introduce the technological principle of XRT-based sorting and will discuss the flow-sheet of the Mittersill mine. Experiences that have led to the current plant design are described as well as the impact it has on the operation."

"The use of shotcrete is a mandatory means for rock support and therefore for safety in many underground mining operations. If shotcrete gets into the flotation feed though, it can negatively influence the flotation process. This especially occurs when sublevel stoping, cut-and-fill or room-and-pillar methods are applied because as the mining face moves on, formerly applied shotcrete layers are mined together with the ore.As shotcrete does not differ significantly from fluorspar ore in its physical properties it gets moved through the comminution process and is fed to the flotation plant like the ore. To prove the influence of shotcrete on the flotation process, a laboratory test series was conducted at the Unit of Mineral Processing (AMR) of the RWTH Aachen University. The shotcrete grade of the flotation feed was varied between 0 and 10% through addition of pure shotcrete. Flotation parameters and also reagent dosage were held constant apart from the addition of the pH regulator, which was dosed to reach a constant pH of 8 at the flotation start. Results showed that with increasing shotcrete grades in the flotation feed the fluorspar recovery as well as general mass recovery decreased. The enrichment factor of Fluorspar also decreased with increasing shotcrete grades in the feed.In an effort to eliminate the shotcrete contamination of the flotation feed, a feasibility study for use of sensor-based sorting prior to the comminution process was conducted. Rock sorting not only reduces the bad influence of shotcrete on the flotation process, but also reduces comminution costs. INTRODUCTIONShotcrete is used in underground mining on a regular basis. It is used for rock support and therefore to increase safety in the underground mining environment. In mineral processing the presence of shotcrete can cause difficulties for example in the concentration processes. In flotation the highly sensitive reagent mixtures can be disturbed by the chemical activity of shotcrete and therefore recovery rates and selectivity of the process can suffer.Shotcrete is a special form of concrete which is applied pneumatically with high velocities and is compressed by its impact energy. Since the process is especially suitable for work in difficult environments and overhead areas, it is established in underground mining for many years. Shotcrete is not only applied in pre-processing of the mines, but particularly of use for cut and fill, as well as room and pillar mining methods. There it is used to secure excavation chambers. When the mine face is secured with shotcrete and subsequently the mining continues, the applied shotcrete will automatically be mixed with the ore."

Operating metallurgists spend a significant part of their time running plant trials to compare two or more conditions in order to improve the process, such as a new reagent, flow sheet or piece of equipment. The best way to conduct such a trial is as a paired experiment when testing two conditions (eg 'old' and 'new') or a randomised block design when testing more than two conditions. These experimental designs should always be preferred over alternatives if their requirements can be met, because they block the effect of uncontrolled variables ('covariates') and are the most statistically efficient, ie they will lead to the required level of confidence in the outcome faster than other methods. Sometimes, however, it is not possible to switch condition easily, which is a prime requirement of these methods. In such cases the only option may be to switch condition once only, and compare the process performance before and after the switch. Examples are testing grinding media, large equipment, or long residence time processes such as leach trains or CCD thickeners. This paper considers some data analysis methods to deal with this situation. Modelling with intervention analysis (IA) uses regression models with a dummy variable to indicate the presence or absence of the test condition. IA with a time series model ensures that the residuals are uncorrelated. IA with a process model helps to deal with the problem of covariates. The reference distribution is a method free of any statistical assumptions but is less powerful than the other methods. Cusum charts are a helpful visual aid to interpreting time trends. A combination of these methods can help improve the confidence in the final decision. None are as good as a formal experimental design such as a paired trial.

The familyowned company has been around since the 1940s and, according to Stefan Heissler, by the end of next year, will employ about 44,500 people worldwide. Heissler is a member of the board of directors of Liebherr International AG.It all started for the Switzerland-based company when Hans Liebherr first recognized a need for heavy equipment in the construction industry, Heissler said. His first product, introduced in 1949, was the TK10, a mobile crane that, at the time, was a groundbreaking innovation to the heavy construction industry. From there, the company began its growth into a world-leading heavy equipment manufacturer that always relied on innovation.In October, Liebherr gathered a group of mining and construction magazine editors in Leoben, Austria to take a look at the company’s latest addition to the global mining and construction markets. On the mining side, Liebherr provided a demonstration of its T-236 100-t (110-st) haul truck and the PR- 766 50-st (55-st) crawler tractor. The one-day demonstration took place at the Erzberg iron mine near Leoben, where both machines are being proven.The Erzberg Mine, operated by VA Ersberg, has been in operation for about 1,300 years and is said to be Europe’s largest surface mine. It employs about 230 people and mines about 12 Mt/a (13,200 million stpy) of ore, producing about 3 Mt/a (3.3 million stpy) of fine-grained iron ore.T-236 rigid-frame truckThe new T-236 rigid-frame dump truck, with a diesel electric drive system, is Liebherr’s entry into the 100-t (110-st) class and is the first in this class with a four-corner, oilimmersed braking system. The haul truck was first introduced during the 2016 MinExpo in Las Vegas, NV. The unit has since successfully completed its testing phase and is currently in its first field operation trials at the Erzberg iron mine in Austria."

"In order to investigate anisotropic characteristics of Boryeong shale in Korea, which clearly shows transverse isotropy, a series of experimental tests were carried out. Using Brazilian test, five elastic constants and tensile strength of the shale were evaluated. Elastic constants were determined by iterative procedure and in order to perform this procedure, constitutive model was modified to fit the experimental condition. The anisotropic ratios of elastic constants were evaluated and the applicability of the methodology was assessed. Apparent Brazilian tensile strength profile was investigated and the ratio of the maximum to minimum tensile strength was estimated. Results showed that the tested rock type had low to moderate anisotropic characteristics.INTRODUCTIONMechanical, thermal and hydraulic characteristics of many rocks vary according to direction, which is known as inherent anisotropy, and it is originated from stratified and/or foliated structure of intact rock and discontinuity of rock mass. Anisotropy is one of the long standing issues of rock mechanics field and it has to be taken into account in several engineering fields such as civil, mining and petroleum engineering. An anisotropic medium has 21 independent elastic constants without any assumption of symmetry. If a material has any symmetry, the number of elastic constants required to define its behavior reduces and eventually two constants are necessary if it has complete symmetry, which is known as isotropy. An anisotropic medium that has remarkable planar structure due to its stratification and foliation such as bedding is often called as a transversely isotropic medium. Transversely isotropic model is frequently adopted in many applications especially for sedimentary rock formation and five elastic constants are required to establish the constitutive model."

"The Mine Haul Road Optimisation Alliance (HROA) is a unique Australian industry–academia collaboration that has been developed to support mine haul road operators. The alliance integrates industry, end-user service providers and academic research expertise in mine haul road design, construction and operation to identify, quantify, implement and monitor the various equipment, materials and road management strategies and solutions required to drive haulage productivity improvements.Initially, a broad overview of the university–industry collaborative landscape is presented, following which the current situation in the Australian mining sector is reviewed both nationally, and on a country-wide basis internationally. This insight places into context the opportunity that strategic collaborations present, to drive productivity and efficiency in mining, while also delivering innovative technology solutions.Following an overview of the HROA collaborative structure, aims and objectives, it is shown how academia and industry collaborations can deliver a more robust and needs-driven solution to mine haul road design, performance and management, especially where integrated solutions are needed. Critically in this approach, implementation and monitoring data provided by industry and service providers alike form the foundation on which to develop research knowledge and innovation that is more responsive to the end-user requirements, typically represented by ‘early goals’ and practical, implementable solutions.The paper concludes with examples of how the alliance collaborations work in practice to deliver focused mine haul road research outcomes, together with the mechanisms used to ensure industry needs are met through end-user driven research solutions for enhanced operational performance.Citation:Handel, D, Miedecke, J, Thompson, R, Tomicek, E and Tulloch, D, 2016. En mina Constancia hemos dado el primer paso y logramos obtener un software, con desarrolladores peruanos, que nos permite predecir el comportamiento de los molinos basados en variables de la mina (leyes, durezas, ratios, etc) que se encuentran en nuestras bases de datos y que se retroalimenta de forma continua. Esto nos permite generar modelos avanzados, y en tiempo real, de predicción del rendimiento de los molinos.
