The Western Mining Corporation mining lease on the Bendigo Goldfield measures 5krri x 18km with more than 20 anticlinal folds parallelling th long north-south boundaries. Numerous closely spaced shafts and extensive underground workings on the reef lines along the folds flooded with groundwater following the progressive abandonment of the field. Preliminary water sampling and assessment demonstrated that a major dewatering programme and acceptable disposal methods were necessary to dewater interconnected old workings in areas of interest prior to any underground work taking place. A field wide geohydolic investigation was undertaken to establish geohydraulic parameters, groundwater recharge rates and water qualities. Data from the field investigation together with estimates of the volume geometry of the submerged workings as obtained from old mine plans, production history, and limited pump testing results were used with an appropriate analytical model to obtain estimates of water discharge rates required to reach various dewatering targets. Water disposal options were limited by relatively high salinities, arsenic levels, contained hydrogen sulphide, and the mine locations within the urban areas surrounding Bendigo. Direct disposal to the surface drainage system could not be considered, treatment to acceptable discharge standards was not economically feasible, and it was necessary to adopt a strategy of collection, containment, and evaporation.

The current status of battery collection and recycling schemes in Australia are explored in light of current developments in product stewardship and increasing pressure to decrease materials going to landfill by originating equipment manufacturers. Used consumer batteries, both single cycle and rechargeable contain a mixture of valuable metals and potentially toxic materials that may become a resource/revenue stream to offset the cost of disposal/recycling. Although the volume of batteries discarded in Australia is modest compared to other global population centres, the expected increase in battery use with increasing equipment portability and future developments in the automotive industry, provide an opportunity to recycle. The requirements for a battery recycling facility in Australia and the most promising processing platforms that may exploit the resource with enough flexibility to cope with battery developments and market trends, are explored.

The paper provides an overview of the development and content of APCOM symposia since their inception in 1961. This development is set within the context of the academic environment in which much of the research published at APCOM symposia is conducted. This environment includes rigorous external assessment of research quality at national levels and against international benchmarks, which carries significant consequences for funding and for the continued existence of the academic minerals industry disciplines. Adverse consequences that undermine the academic provision of mining and resource engineering will impact negatively on the minerals industry by reducing the level of research and education resources available to it.The traditional reductionist approach to research is contrasted with the inter-disciplinary approach that is required to address the complex systems problems that the minerals industry will have to address to ensure its technical, economical and environmental sustainability. Such an approach offers a means of raising research profiles, of establishing mutually beneficial academic-industry engagement and provides an opportunity for APCOM to take a lead role in identifying the research and development agenda for the future

"INTRODUCTION Twin Metals Minnesota (TMM) (operating as a joint venture between Duluth Metals and Antofagasta PLC) assumed control of the property in 2010. Amec became involved with the project in 2011 and in 2012 incorporated additional drilling in order to update historic resource estimates. The Maturi geological model and resource estimate was updated in 2014 to incorporate additional information obtained during 2013 and 2014 drill campaigns. In 2017, Amec was purchased by the Wood Group and is now known as Wood. Geology The Twin Metals Minnesota (TMM) Maturi, Maturi Southwest, Birch Lake, and Spruce Road properties are located in northeastern Minnesota (Figure 1). This talk discussed the Maturi deposit only, although all four deposits share similarities. The following geology is summarized from Peterson and Severson (2002).Maturi lies within the Superior Province of the Canadian Shield which is exposed in central and northeastern Minnesota and extends northward into Ontario. In eastern Minnesota, the Midcontinent Rift System developed during crustal scale extension in the Mesoproterozoic Era. The rift system is traceable, as exposures of mantle-derived tholeiitic to subalkaline mafic lava flows, intrusives, and rift-filling fluvial sedimentary rocks, and in the subsurface as a gravity anomaly (high), from the eastern end of Lake Superior, arcing west across the lake basin, and extending south-southwest to northeastern Kansas. Intrusion of the Duluth Complex, circa 1,108 - 1,099 Ma, was related to rifting and is co-genetic with the North Shore Volcanic Group mafic volcanic rocks that form the hanging wall of the Duluth Complex to the east. Cu-Ni-precious metals (PM) mineralization including Pt, Pd, Au and Ag within the Duluth Complex is hosted by mafic to ultramafic intrusive rocks that are part of the overall intrusive complex. The Duluth Complex is defined as a more or less continuous mass of mafic to felsic plutonic rocks that extends northeastward for more than 170 miles (275 km) in an arcuate fashion from Duluth nearly to Grand Portage in Minnesota. It is bounded by a footwall of Paleoproterozoic sedimentary rocks and Archean granite-greenstone terranes (Peterson and Severson, 2002), and a hanging wall largely of comagmatic anorthosite, rift related flood basalts, and hypabyssal intrusions of the Beaver Bay Complex. Mineralization is hosted in the basal mineralized zone (BMZ) of the South Kawishiwi Intrusion (SKI). The SKI magmas intruded sub-horizontally between hangingwall Anorthositic Series (AN) rocks and footwall granitic rocks of the Neoarchean Giants Range batholith (GRB). The Maturi local geology and the deposit footprint (shaded orange) is shown in Figure 2."

"In order to investigate the stability of embankment on soft subgrade improved by T-shaped deep mixed column composite foundation, the internal forces and failure modes of columns were analyzed on the shape of critical slip surface and the displacement fields of composite foundation through strength reduction method of three dimensional numerical simulation. Then comparison between T-shaped and conventional deep mixed column composite foundation were conducted. The simulation results indicate that the stability analysis was overestimated by limit equilibrium methods. Piles within the slope shoulder provide great resistance slide effect through the vertical bearing capacity, while the piles nearby slope shoulder and outside slope shoulder providing great moment to resistant slip. The embankment stability of T-shaped deep mixed column composite foundation is higher than that of conventional deep mixed column composite foundation while cost less cement and construction time.INTRODUCTIONThe soft soil has many unfavorable project properties such as high compressibility, low strength, and high water component. Embankment built on the soft soil will face subsidence, horizontal displacement and stability problems. Cement-soil deep mixed column composite foundation is more commonly used as a method for construction of embankment on soft ground [1-2]. For the existing problems of China's current cement-soil pile (wet jet mixing pile), including strength uneven, effective treatment with shallow depth and high cost, a new technique, T-shaped bidirectional deep mixed column, is introduced [3]. An automatic expanding mixing blade was developed by Liu et al. shown in Figure. 1, to install TDM columns [4].T-shaped deep mixed (TDM) column combines bi-directional deep mixing technique and T-shaped deep mixing technique: ?Using concentric biaxial drill pipe, opposite rotational direction of the blade on the inner drill pipe and the outer drill pipe. By squeezing action of the blade on the outer drill pipe, forward and reverse rotation of the blades bidirectional mixing at the same time, blocking the way to take the grout, the uniformity of cement mixing is improved. ?Scalable stirring blades, which can be stretched for two different radius at any depth below ground, expand cross-section of the upper pile (enlarged head), forming expanding cross-section within the upper part of a certain depth which is similar to the shape of nail. As a new composite foundation, T-shaped mixing pile composite foundation is widely applied. However, studies on the stability of T-shaped column treated soft subgrade are rare in the research. So the stability study on T-shaped column composite foundation under embankment for guiding the design and construction has important significance."

"Abiquiu Dam is a rolled earth fill dam with impermeable core located on the Rio Chama in New Mexico. Abiquiu has had a history of excessive seepage through the fractured sandstone abutments since water was first impounded in 1963. The foundation was treated with a single row grout curtain in the cutoff trench prior to placement of the embankment. During the 1960’s and 1970’s, the grout curtain was extended 1,000 ft. into both abutments and sections of the foundation beneath the embankment were regrouted. Grouting of the foundation beneath the embankment required drilling through the embankment. Drilling fluid loss or loss of circulation within the impervious core was observed during multiple phases of supplementary grouting and during verification drilling following the 1970’s grouting program. It is likely that the drilling methods employed for these grouting and drilling programs caused hydraulic fracturing of the impervious core. The fluid losses in the embankment may be related to seasonal shutdown layers in the embankment or benches in the abutment foundations. In addition, it is likely that the impervious core was fractured from grout pressures during installation of grout pipe through the embankment.INTRODUCTIONAbiquiu Dam is located on the Rio Chama in New Mexico and consists of a rolled earth fill dam with impermeable core, controlled outlet works, and an uncontrolled rock-cut spillway. The dam was authorized for flood control and sediment retention and was designed as a dry dam, holding flood pools for relatively short durations. The foundation is comprised of Permian and Triassic age, interbedded mudstones and sandstones that were deposited in an active braided stream system. Sandstones are moderately fractured and have variable aperture and infilling. Generally speaking, joints are near vertical. Abiquiu has had a history of excessive seepage through the fractured sandstone abutments since water was first impounded in 1963. The foundation was treated with a single row grout curtain in the cutoff trench prior to placement of the embankment. In 1966-1968, the grout curtain was extended 500-ft into the left abutment and the foundation beneath a 560 ft. section of the embankment was re-grouted. In 1978-1980, the grout curtain was extended 1,000 ft. into the right abutment, an additional 500 ft into the left abutment and the foundation beneath the right 520-ft section of the embankment was re-grouted. The alignments of these grout programs are shown in Figure 1. Grouting of the foundation beneath the embankment required drilling through the embankment. Drilling fluid loss or loss of circulation within the impervious core was observed during both phases of supplementary grouting and during verification drilling following the 1978-80 grouting program. "Large-scale longwall mining of shallow coal seams could cause mining-induced fractures to communicate with the surface immediately in Northwest China, leading to a series of mine safety and environmental issues, including crack formation, water loss, vegetation deterioration, land desertification, and spontaneous coal combustion. Therefore, an accurate and effective understanding of the spatiotemporal evolution law of mining-induced fractures in overlying strata and its relationship to upper aquifers is critical. In this paper, the application of the geophysical-chemical properties of radon in mining engineering is explored as a potential solution to the shortcomings of existing surveying methods. A radioactive measurement method is proposed for the detection of the development of mining-induced fractures in overlying strata in the Baoshan Coal Mine (BCM). The on-site trial indicated that the first weighting step is approximately 60 m, the average periodic weighting step is approximately 20 m, and the influence coverage of the advanced abutment pressure is approximately 30 m. The presented method could be used as an indirect technical support to increase the safety of coal mining by acting as a simple, fast, and reliable method of detecting mining-induced fractures in overlying strata.INTRODUCTIONAccording to the latest coalfield prediction results provided by China’s National Administration of Coal Geology (CNACG) (Zhou et al., 2013), China’s coal resources are mainly distributed throughout the West, e.g., Inner Mongolia, Xinjiang, Shaanxi, Shanxi, Ningxia, and Guizhou. Two major coal mining areas have been established in the Northwest and the Southwest, and are typically represented by Inner Mongolia and Guizhou (Zhang et al., 2010). Northwest China is an arid to semi-arid area, where the coal seams are typically shallow and covered by a thin layer of bedrock. In its natural state, the surface’s ecological environment is fragile. Large-scale longwall mining of shallow coal seams could cause mining-induced fractures to communicate with the surface immediately, leading to a series of mine safety and environmental issues, including crack formation, water loss, vegetation deterioration, land desertification, and spontaneous coal combustion. This can propel any potential ecological fragility into a state of actual destruction (Zhang et al., 2011). Therefore, an accurate and effective understanding of the spatiotemporal evolution law of mininginduced fractures in overlying strata has become the theoretical basis of solving the above issues."

EGAT Mae Moh Lignite Mine in Thailand produces about 16 Mt of lignite annually from open-cut mining. The coal is used to generate 2400 MW of electricity. In the near future, however, the coal must be extracted from underground at 400 - 500 m deep from the surface. The problem is the thickness of the coal seams. There are two coal seams that are about 25 m thick with 20 - 25 m of interburden between them.In order to investigate thick seam mining systems and propose a new mining system in ultra-thick coal seams in Thailand, a joint research group was established by Japanese and Thai researchers and mining engineers in early 2009. This paper describes conventional underground mining systems and underground coal gasification for thick coal seams and discusses the applicable coal mining systems to this mine. Then, this paper proposes an innovative underground coal mining system for thick coal seam, ‘eco-friendly underground coal mining system which consists of the utilisation of flyash and CO2 storage’.

Particle processing is a key to using solid particles in fuel cell applications. Selectivity with regard to reactivity, impurities, etc. is an important feature and the treatment of particle surfaces could greatly impact the performance of direct carbon fuel cells. Solid fuel particles will become increasingly important in the future. Present energy conversion systems for solid fuels are too inefficient. New energy conversion systems for solid fuels with higher energy conversion efficiencies are possible. Fuel cell technology is a key technology in these new conversion systems. The direct carbon fuel cell (DCFC) operates on carbon particles obtained from a variety of solid fuel feedstocks. The DCFC is the only fuel cell designed to directly oxidize carbon particles in a special anode chamber. The particles are generally graphite structure with high purity. The electrolyte used is the high temperature solid oxide, molten carbonate, or hydroxide electrolyte. Since a pure stream of CO2 is produced, the stream can easily be sequestered and disposed. Pure carbon dioxide produced as a by-product would also have a market in many industries. A well-defined technology roadmap identifying key research and development (R&D) issues is necessary to provide a framework for the development of these systems and to prevent entrenchment in inherently inefficient technologies. Over the last decades long BOF campaign lives have successfully been established due to improved quality of the refractory material and due to intensive use of slag splashing. On the other hand, steelmakers are more and more faced with elevated phosphorous contents in the hot metal. This phenomenon is a global tendency caused by the increasing pressure to utilize cheaper iron ore sources. In India, iron ore sources have traditionally elevated phosphorous contents. The phosphorous removal challenge calls for using bottom stirring at the BOF converters, as these combined technology of top oxygen blowing and inert gas stirring through the bottom, helps significantly to improve bath mixing and thus in shifting the process towards the optimum metallurgical equilibrium conditions. All this is common knowledge and daily business in the steelmaking shops all over world. Unfortunately, focusing on a long BOF refractory campaign by means of slag splashing and maintaining optimum conditions for high efficient bottom stirring are naturally conflictive aims. Applying slag splashing causes unavoidable bottom built-up which in turn covers or even blocks the bottom tuyeres. Most of the steelmaking shops today are either operating slag splashing without bottom stirring or bottom stirring without slag splashing. Some are trying slag splashing with bottom stirring but mostly only for a certain short period of the whole campaign. Baoshan Meishan Steel is an integrated steel plant, located in Nanjing (China). The plant is operating two BOF shops (3x 150t and 2x 250t), producing various steel grades. Because of the iron ore source used, the hot metal phosphorous content is rather high with up to 2,000 ppm. In order to achieve low phosphorous contents in the molten steel below 200 ppm, Meishan uses the TBM (Thyssen Bottom Metallurgy) bottom stirring technology in both of their steel plants, successfully applying slag splashing and efficient bottom stirring for campaigns up to 10,000 heats. This paper describes the operation procedures, strategies, and the maintenance concept established at Meishan Steel which is suitable to meet both conflicting targets at the same time.

O presente trabalho faz a caracterização microestrutural e mecânica da liga de alumínio 3105 submetida a duas técnicas de Deformação Plástica Severa (NECAE - Extrusão em Canais Não-Equiangulares, e Laminação Assimétrica), a fim de se eleger entre as duas técnicas a melhor para se obter uma microestrutura mais encruada e refinada. As avaliações microestrutural e mecânica foram feitas por Difração de Raios-X (DRX), análise dilatométrica e ensaio de dureza Vickers, as quais permitiram avaliar de forma indireta o grau de encruamento / refinamento da estrutura resultante de cada processo de Deformação Plástica Severa, avaliando o incremento de dureza, perfil do pico de DRX e temperatura de início de recristalização. Conclui-se que a técnica mais efetiva no encruamento/refinamento da estrutura foi a Laminação Assimétrica, tendo em vista a geometria adotada na técnica de NECAE.

"The angle of draw (in Germany, referred to as Limit Angle) plays a significant role in the field of mining subsidence engineering. This applies both to the assessment of the affected area by underground mining activities as well as applied methods for the prediction of ground movements.Recent observations using remote sensing show that ground movements outside the affected area defined by the angle of draw have been detected in German hard coal mining. Since the affected area by underground mining activities also plays an essential role regarding claims of landowners with damages to their houses and infrastructures, possible solutions for limiting the size of the affected area will be presented in this paper.Ground movements which exceed the affected area of an underground coal mine, as defined by the angle of draw will be shown in an exemplary manner. Present knowledge indicates an expectation that ground movements outside the affected area will not cause damage of major significance.This paper outlines the consequences for all affected parties regarding ground movements due to underground coal mining that exceed the extent of the area defined by the currently assumed angle of draw. This will be visualized in a case study.INTRODUCTIONGermany has a long tradition of coal mining, especially in the mining area of the Ruhr district. Following a long period of mining activity, the area is now highly populated and densely developed. In such an environment, it is of utmost importance to calculate and predict ground movements initiated by mining activities; therefore, the research here focused on the prediction of ground movement for the last decades. Special attention was given to the development of accurate ground movement models, which can be utilized in all mining areas. These models are based on different influencing factors such as depth of mining, worked thickness and the angle of draw.Depending on these models, the mining companies calculate the area of land subsidence; the predicted results are used for financial calculations and planning. For structures on top of zones with a high risk of deformation, structural measures can be applied, construction warnings can be given and, in cases of damage, compensation can be planned. The technical and economic planning was performed for all areas of mining subsidence. The most important factor for the outer limits of mining subsidence is the angle of draw (Ger. Grenzwinkel), which plots the border of the area of mining subsidence."

Os modos de desgaste de um material podem sofrer transições decorrentes de alterações nas condições do tribossistema. Para o estudo e análise dos fenômenos associados às eventuais mudanças, a técnica de micro-abrasão do tipo esfera livre é reconhecidamente uma boa escolha. No presente trabalho, para o aço inoxidável austenítico AISI 316L, fez-se um estudo do comportamento da taxa de desgaste, bem como do mecanismo de desgaste em função da carga de ensaio, tipo de abrasivo (SiO2 ou SiC), dureza do material (modificada pela sua nitretação) e concentração de abrasivo. O desgaste por deslizamento predomina quando a lama abrasiva é constituída de SiO2, enquanto o rolamento passa a prevalecer com a troca do abrasivo para o SiC. Verificou-se que em nenhum dos dois casos ocorreu transição de mecanismos após variações nas condições de ensaio. Por outro lado, o coeficiente de desgaste do material aumenta com a carga de ensaio, substituição do SiO2 pelo SiC e tende a cair com a nitretação (aumento de dureza) do aço e com a concentração de abrasivo. O aumento simultâneo da carga de ensaio e da concentração de sílica na lama diminui significativamente a taxa de desgaste, encurtando o período de "running-in".

Traditionally, secant piles have been utilized to provide temporary support during excavation for shafts and cut-and-cover tunnels. As an alternative, the secant piles can be included into the permanent structure, where they serve as the envelope sustaining the lateral loads and gravity of the permanent structure in addition to supporting the excavation during construction. This has several benets, such as shorter building times and lower excavation costs. Recent construction of an approach structure and an underground station as part of Montréal, Canada’s Réseau Express Métropolitain (REM), one of the biggest transit systems in North America, was completed with remarkable success using this. In this paper, a case study based on a project that employed secant piles as the permanent liner is presented. Techniques to guarantee a watertight construction with over a century of service life are described, along with a variety of structural and waterproong methods applied to create an economical design.

Tasker (1985) has detailed the accepted practices for constructing polygonal blocks of influerrce in the estimation of ore reserves. Further he suggests that users might fall into traps such as omission or overlap when determining the area of influence for each sample point.As an example of these types of errors Tasker (1985) describes under "Coverage ofthe Area" how 25 per cent of the exploration area will not be included in an equiangular triangular grid where hexagonal blocks of influence are used.The introductory suggestion of Tasker (1985) of "incorrect procedure" by Rudenno (1983) (and Armstrong (1983)) reiterated around the Figure 2a of Tasker (1985), is based on the brief description of the polygonal area of influence by Rudenno (1983). That description is not too different from that given by King, McMahon and Bujtor (1982).

Metal price is among the key variables in the open pit optimization and the economic evaluation process. The common approach to handle metal prices in open pit mine planning is to optimize the ultimate pit and the mining schedules using a fixed, flat metal price. In this respect, metal price is assumed to be known with certainty throughout the entire mine life, which in some cases can reach 80 years. Given the volatile nature of metal markets and the metal price cycles, the conventional pit optimization approach may generate sub-optimized mining plans, which results in either extra costs to mining projects or lost revenues, or both. Long-term operational decisions such as future pit expansions, beyond the currently optimized limits, cannot be handled using the pit optimization approach based on flat metal prices. There is a growing interest in the mining industry to model and manage such market uncertainty in the pit optimization as well as the project evaluations in order to maximize the value of mining operations. In this paper, the author will outline a practical approach to optimize the ultimate pit taking into account the volatility and variability of metal markets. The proposed approach uses a combination of the pit optimizer of the commercial MineSight package and a simulation-based economic modeling real options valuation approach employing the least-squares Monte Carlo algorithm. MineSight pit optimizer employs both the floating cone for initial optimization exercise and the standard Lerchs-Grossmann algorithm. In this paper, Lerchs-Grossmann option will be used to generate the pit shells. Real options valuation approach used in this study is based on generating multiple metal price scenarios. Metal price uncertainty is modeled using stochastic metal price models such as the geometric Brownian motion and the mean-reverting process. The mining operational scenarios corresponding to the simulated metal prices are then optimized using the least-square Monte Carlo approach. The objective is to maximize the discounted cash flow value of the project while incorporating the operating flexibility to revise the operating status of the open pit with time as new information becomes available. The focus of this work is on the practicality of the proposed uncertainty-based pit optimization approach and the difference it can make to the technical operational mining decisions. A case study of a hypothetical open pit poly-metallic mine is provided. The deposit contains copper, gold and silver grades. The run of mine ore is sent to the process plant that produces copper concentrate with copper as the main metal and gold and silver as the by-products. Four uncertain variables are considered here include copper, gold, silver prices and foreign exchange rate. Both copper price and exchange rate are modeled using the mean-reverting process while gold and silver prices are modeled using the geometric Brownian motion. The case study is performed using both the conventional flat price pit optimization approach and the proposed uncertainty-based one to compare results.

"This paper outlines a simple methodology for iron ore characterisation. Iron ores commonly contain a range of iron oxides with varying iron content along with generally minor quantities of lighter silicate gangue phases, giving rise to density variations. Companies tend to rely on heavy liquid separation (HLS) in the evaluation of samples arising from exploration, mining or metallurgical processes. Heavy suspension separation (HSS), a simple laboratory technique of density fractionation, employing suspensions of fine tungsten carbide (WC) particles in lithium heteropolytungstate (LST) solutions, can be used in the evaluation of iron ore.As part of Arrium Mining’s program to improve its knowledge of ore types being processed in two hematite ore beneficiation plants (OBP), metallurgical evaluation of hematite feed and geometallurgical evaluation for the OBPs has become a major focus.Metallurgical evaluation of the hematite ore ultra-fine size fraction, formally treated as waste but now upgraded by HSS, is a part of Arrium’s program to improve recovery.The HLS method for iron ore characterisation is not generally used as part of routine iron ore feed metallurgical evaluation due to the expense, toxicity and time-consuming nature of the technique. Results show that the HSS method for iron ore characterisation can achieve low-cost, low-toxic separation and can be used on-site to improve turnaround time of results (Begelhole, Jasper and Koroznikova, 2013).Arrium have applied this technique successfully for the past three years to progress process improvement for the two OBP as well as to assist Arrium’s on-site laboratory services, Bureau Veritas in Whyalla.The main objective of this program has been to further develop the HSS procedures using a low-toxicity, high specific gravity (SG) suspension; LST and WC as the dense medium for metallurgical evaluation of ultra-fines.A suspension of a particular density will separate iron ore into two products: a sink fraction (denser iron oxide – hydroxide particles) and float fraction (silicate – iron ore composite particles). A theoretical grade and mass recovery can be calculated, and a grade – mass recovery curve can be constructed for iron.Metallurgical evaluation of the plant feed ultra-fine size fractions are used to improve efficiency of an upgrading plant process. "Boliden Harjavalta Oy has a long tradition in the Finnish metal industry starting from the 1930's. The Smelter consists of copper and nickel flash smelting lines. Off-gases are captured in the acid plant to produce sulfur products. During the early years of production, the surrounding environment suffered from high SO2 and dust emissions. The first acid plant started in 1947, a few years after commissioning of the smelter. The flash smelting method was developed and commissioned in 1949. This created the basis for today’s environmentally sound metal production. Recent air emission reductions are related to treating lean ventilation and granulation gases. Emissions from the stacks are monitored with continuous measurement devices. SO2 and PM10 concentrations are also measured from the residential area and reported online in cooperation with Harjavalta community and other local industry.INTRODUCTIONProductionBoliden Harjavalta Oy smelts copper and nickel concentrates and refines copper in the western part of Finland. The copper concentrates come from external copper mines mainly in South America and Europe. Concentrates are unloaded at the Pori harbor and transported to Harjavalta by train from a distance of about 60 km. Boliden Harjavalta Oy has operations in Harjavalta and Pori. The smelter in Harjavalta produces copper anodes that are transported via railway to the copper refinery in Pori. The anodes are electro-refined into copper cathodes and by-products like Se, Ag, Au and Pt/Pd concentrate. In the Harjavalta smelter SO2 containing gases are delivered to a sulphuric acid plant where sulphuric acid and liquid sulphur dioxide are produced.Our nickel smelter smelts nickel concentrates on a tolling basis to produce nickel matte for customer needs. SO2 containing off-gases are delivered to the sulphuric acid plant for sulphur capture and modification into products.All our operations are certified according to the Quality, Environmental and Occupational Health and Safety Standards ISO 9001, ISO 14001 and OHSAS 18001. Boliden Harjavalta Oy was the first company in Finland operating in the metal and technology industry to be certified according to the Energy Management Standard EN 16001, currently this certification is done according to ISO 50001."

"Current closure objectives and criteria are often difficult to achieve and are not delivering value for money outcomes at closure. Current mine closure processes tend to focus on rehabilitation and revegetation of landform structures to as close to premining condition as possible, rather than focusing on the functions of those structures and values they provided. Because mining has highly disturbed the environment, premining conditions and vegetation are often not achievable and objectives and criteria aimed at achieving close to these conditions have been shown to be very costly.The authors have developed a broader approach to developing mine closure plans that is based on environmental risk and gaining post-closure social, environmental and economic value. We think the focus should shift from trying to return the original landscape to returning functions and values provided on- and off-site. If it is not possible to return values on-site in a cost-effective manner, investment should be provided to deliver equivalent values elsewhere.This process can provide better stakeholder acceptance, deliver better environmental outcomes on the tenement and within the catchment and significantly reduce costs, whist fulfilling closure obligations.This framework should enable closure teams to: focus on the functions and services that are important to achieve as outcomes post-closure, rather than a focus on revegetation and replacing the premining biophysical structure engage meaningfully with stakeholders regarding closure outcomes and link outcomes to stakeholder values conduct transparent option evaluations that enable stakeholders to clearly understand the costs and benefits associated with each option and to participate in dialogue on option selection.We present examples of how the framework could be applied to identify alternate closure options that achieve equivalent value outcomes while reducing the costs of closing the mines.CITATION:Howard, B, Pershke, D and Jones, M, 2014.
