INTRODUCTION One of the major concerns for deep seabed mining is its environmental impact, from the disturbance of benthic communities due to the mining activity to the disposal of mine tailings back to the ocean. Yet a significant amount of waste materials would be produced from the on-deck processing on the mining platform, all the materials that produced on the mining platform are to be shipped to the land unless the related regulation and guidelines are developed by IMO and ISA (ISA, 2018). Still, ecotoxicology data for the deep seabed minerals from case studies in deep-sea tailings disposal (DSTD) and submarine tailings disposal (STD) sites are lacking and all other related aspects are also largely unknown. This year, the Republic of Korea has started a research project for the more comprehensive understanding of chemical and physical properties of mine tailings from the on-deck processing and the possible environmental impacts on the marine organisms after its disposal. Based on the scientific data collected from this project, Korea would be able to make recommendations for the methods and technical standards for the deep seabed mining discharges. The subjects of this project are threefold: to understand the physical/chemical properties of the tailings, to model the dispersion of particulates after the disposal, and to assess its impact on the marine ecology. Laboratory Experiments Producing Mine Tailings First, the possible waste materials are produced by mimicking the collecting and dressing processes at sea. The polymetallic nodules (PN) would be mined by using a collector lifting the crushed nodules out of the bottom sediment, and the bottom water, accompanying sediment, and the fine nodule particles which are too small to be recovered would be discharged to the ocean and thus are considered as tailings (Schriever and Thiel, 2013). In the laboratory, PN is crushed into the fragments smaller than 2 cm, abraded in the water using the rock mill, and then sieved to obtain the fine particles to be disposed.

Ranger Uranium Mine, surrounded by Kakadu National Park is located in the Alligator Rivers Region (ARR) in the wet-dry monsoonal tropics, 250 km east of Darwin, Northern Territory. A trial landform (TLF), measuring approximately 200 m by 400 m (8 ha) was constructed during late 2008 and early 2009 by Energy Resources of Australia (ERA), adjacent to the northwestern wall of the tailings storage facility at the Ranger Mine. A collaborative research program involving the Environmental Research Institute of the Supervising Scientist (eriss) and ERA, has been underway to measure long-term (five to ten year) rainfall, run-off, sediment and solute losses, seepage and vegetation establishment on the TLF (Saynor et al, 2012; Lowry et al, 2014). This paper reports on bed load losses from four erosion plots built on the TLF. These were achieved by physically isolating approximately 30 × 30 m areas from the surrounding landform on three sides with sidewalls along with an open polyvinyl chloride (PVC) pipe on the downslope side. Each plot was instrumented with a range of sensors. Two plots, 1 and 2 were constructed on waste rock material, while plots 3 and 4 were constructed on waste rock mixed with approximately 30 per cent lateritic material. Plots 1 and 4 had tube stock planted in early 2009, and plots 2 and 3 were initially planted by direct seeding in July 2009 and were infill planted with tube stock in January 2011.CITATION:Saynor, M J and Erskine, W D, 2016. The kinetics of fine and ultrafine particles in conventional mechanical flotation cells are limited (Feng and Aldrich, 1999; Trahar, 1981; Wang et al, 2016). Accordingly, even limited recoveries with such machines require long residence times. Theoretical investigations into the rate of capture of fine particles by flotation, have indicated that a key parameter is the rate of shear in the fluid surrounding the bubbles and the particles. Achieving fast flotation rates of ultrafines requires a new method of bringing the particles and bubbles into contact, utilising the beneficial properties of highly dissipative flows to break through the water boundary layer. In 2010, a new type of flotation cell known as the Concorde Cell was described, in which bubbles and particles are brought together in a sonic shock wave (Jameson, 2010). Earlier research had shown that when a dispersion of fine bubbles in liquid passed through a converging nozzle at the local speed of sound, the resulting shock wave downstream generates a mass of even finer bubbles in the flow as it passes through the shock wave. The fluid within the shock wave is highly turbulent, and an environment is created that is very favourable to particle-bubble collision and capture. In this paper, we briefly describe the Concorde Flotation Cell and give examples of its use.

A laboratory apparatus (shield dust simulator) was designed and constructed to simulate the dust generated during the advance of longwall hydraulic roof supports, or shields. The objective of the study was to develop a tool that could be used to test the hypothesis that foam applied to a mine roof prior to a shield advance could be used to reduce the respirable dust generated during shield advances. This paper will outline the design parameters for the development of the system, as well as describe baseline testing of coal and limestone dust. Results show the average instantaneous respirable dust concentrations that occurred during simulated shield advance. Confidence intervals were calculated from the instantaneous respirable dust data to determine the repeatability of the data produced by the device. INTRODUCTION During longwall mining, miners can be exposed to respirable dust that is generated during the advance of hydraulic roof supports or shields. National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) researchers have conducted numerous surveys of longwall mining operations, benchmarking the operating practices and dust control measures in use. It has been determined that the shields are responsible for 27% of the respirable dust that is generated on the longwall face [1]. The dust generated by the shield advances ranks second, next to the longwall shearer which is accountable for 43% of the respirable dust generated on the longwall face. The respirable dust generated during the advance of the shields can be a significant contributor to the respirable dust exposure of the mining personnel operating at the longwall face, especially since some of this dust is generated in the walkway. Control systems designed to reduce the dust levels generated during the shield advance have the potential to greatly reduce the respirable dust exposures of the personnel downwind of these activities. One control technology to decrease the dust generated by the shield advances would be to apply a layer of foam to the forward shield-roof interface prior to the shield advance [2]. The blanketed layer of foam would interact with the material located on the top of the shield during the advance, preventing a portion of that dust from becoming entrained in the mine air. This layer of foam would be applied using a foaming nozzle located on the longwall shearer body that would spray foam on the roof surface as the shearer passed. Substantial laboratory work has been completed to determine the feasibility of this type of foam application. NIOSH engineers have classified the various characteristics of foaming agents, using foam expansion ratio and drainage as important properties, as well as developed the mechanical systems required to apply the foam safely to the mine roof [2, 3]. The construction of an apparatus that could simulate the mechanical interaction between the dust-laden shield top and mine roof was necessary to adequately test the hypothesis that foam could be an appropriate control. A team of engineers designed and constructed a shield dust simulator system allowing for in-house testing prior to a full-scale field investigation.

Cobalt-rich ferromanganese crust and nodule ores from seamount areas contain volcanic and sedimentary rocks as substrate or nuclei and these ores require mineral processing to remove the substrate/nuclei rock before smelting. This paper reviews the results of jig separation and air table treatment for the coarse fraction and flotation and hybrid jigging for the fine fraction. Using these techniques substrate/nuclei rock was removed from the cobalt-rich ferromanganese oxide components. The mineralogical properties and metallurgical treatment methods including hydrometallurgical treatment of low grade ore is also reviewed.

A indústria de máquinas e equipamentos hidráulicos está manufaturando produtos com tolerâncias de ajustes dimensionais cada vez menores, visando o prolongamento da vida útil e o alto rendimento de tais componentes. Nesta perspectiva, é notória a necessidade de identificar as principais fontes de contaminação existentes nos fluidos hidráulicos, a fim de controla-los. A partir da coleta de amostras de um óleo hidráulico que passa por uma filtragem nominal e de um óleo hidráulico que passa por um processo de filtração absoluta, foi realizada a contagem de partículas, análise por fluorescência de raios-x, análise microscópica ótica e análise por microscopia eletrônica de varredura, para estas amostras. Com base nas análises realizadas, foi possível constatar a importância do processo de filtragem absoluta na redução dos níveis de contaminação do óleo hidráulico.

"Cyanide destruction technologies are implemented at gold and silver operations to comply with the International Cyanide Management Code and meet ever more stringent discharge limits. Currently, the most common chemical cyanide destruction processes used in industry are sulfur dioxide/oxygen, hydrogen peroxide, and Caro’s acid. The cyanide destruction process used at an operation must reliably generate streams of acceptable quality at all times, and depends on numerous factors, including permit discharge requirements, tailings chemistry, location, site-specific climatic conditions and size of the operation. Selecting the most appropriate cyanide destruction process and determining the process design criteria requires accurate laboratory testing. This paper presents and discusses the results of a number of cyanide destruction evaluations that have been conducted to reduce cyanide concentration in process solutions or cyanidation tails. Laboratory testing provides important insights into reagent consumption and other factors required to achieve the target residual weak acid dissociable cyanide (CNWAD) levels.INTRODUCTION Process solutions associated with the extraction of gold and silver contain several forms of cyanide. The most toxic form of cyanide is free cyanide, which can be present as a dissociated cyanide anion (CN-) or gaseous or aqueous HCN. Weak or moderately stable cyanide complexes such as those of zinc, copper and nickel are classified as weak acid dissociable (CNWAD). Although less toxic than free cyanide, weak acid dissociable cyanide complexes are considered “ecologically sensitive” forms of cyanide and are regulated in most jurisdictions. In practice, reported WAD cyanide values comprises both free cyanide and weak acid dissociable cyanide complexes. Cyanide complexes with gold, mercury, cobalt and iron are referred to as strong acid dissociable complexes (CNSAD) and are much more stable, even under mildly acidic conditions. Another term commonly used in cyanide chemistry is total cyanide, which represents all cyanide compounds present in solution. Total cyanide levels in solutions are always equal to or higher than WAD cyanide values and the difference between the two usually indicates the presence of iron-cyanide compounds. Typically in Canada, CNTOTAL levels cannot exceed 1 mg/L in solutions discharged to the environment."

The recently performed study represents realistic and modern pipeline blasting techniques combined with modern data acquisition. The evaluation compares measured PPV and strain, as well as calculated stress, at equivalent scaled distances.

Keywords: Thermal Plasma, Electroreduction, Electrolysis, Transition metals, Waste treatment, Molten oxides, Chromium oxide. An innovative process to treat transition metal oxide waste materials from diverse sources is presented. This technology involves using reverse-polarity DC plasma driven electrolysis in molten oxides. The process results in the recovery of the transition metal and other heavy metals from waste. By-products generated throughout the processing was converted to environmentally acceptable slag. The significance of this technology is that the treatment of the waste is accomplished in one step which in turn lowers the cost of remediation. Moreover, this process uses high temperature properties of thermal plasmas, which makes it possible to use molten oxides instead of halides as electrolytes. Chromium was successfully reduced from chromium oxide through the plasma driven electro-reduction process. It was shown that the selection of the appropriate ionic conducting oxides was critical for the formation of a slag that would enhance the reduction of chromium oxide.

No presente trabalho, foram avaliados os efeitos do tratamento térmico de alívio de tensões na microestrutura e propriedades mecânicas de juntas soldadas dos aços SA516-70 e SA387-11 (ambos aplicados na fabricação de vasos de pressão). Chapas com 40 mm de espessura de ambos os aços foram soldadas por arco elétrico com arame tubular e, posteriormente, submetidas a tratamento térmico para alívio de tensões. A variação de dureza ao longo da solda e a resistência à tração dos materiais soldados e tratados termicamente foi avaliada. A microestrutura dos materiais soldados foi acompanhada por microscopia ótica convencional. Por meio do tratamento térmico empregado foi possível observar a redução do nível de encruamento nos metais base e zonas termicamente afetadas das juntas em ambos os materiais com aumento de ductilidade no aço SA516-70.

"There are a variety of methods suitable to analyse elemental and mineralogical contents of rock drill core samples. Current demands are on fast exploration and objective analysis of ore samples. This paper proposes a combination of Laser-Induced Fluorescence (LIF) and image processing, entitled LIF-imaging, as a potential method for automated mineral analysis of the drill core samples. It is shown that LIF-imaging can produce a mineral map of the fluorescent minerals existing on the surface of the drill core samples. The test cases are drill core samples from a Ni-Cu mine situated in Kevitsa, Finland. The main prerequisite of LIF-imaging technique is a reference data, linking colours to the minerals. This study describes the calibration of LIF-imaging technique using precise but slow Raman spectroscopy. Using regularized logistic regression, a model is obtained that classifies the minerals based on their emitted fluorescent colours in the digital images. The abundance of each mineral group is estimated by pixel counting. The results are compared with X-Ray Diffraction laboratory assays performed on the same samples. The results show that the interpretation of the fluorescent minerals through LIF images corresponds to the XRD results. Furthermore, the utilization of the logistic regression to interpret the existing fluorescent minerals greatly improves the technique."

With the burgeoning opportunities for new gold mines to be developed the opportunity now exists for a reassessment of the optimal processing path for these gold ores. Projects have traditionally followed the path of whole ore cyanidation with either Carbon In Pulp (CIP), Carbon In Leach (CIL) or Merrill Crowe. The challenge ahead is whether these traditional processing methods are the best option for stakeholders, or to go beyond CIP and use a combination of currently available technologies that can be used to provide gold recovery at a significantly reduced capital cost and minimal deleterious impact on the environment. Either stand alone or combinations of gravity concentration and flotation, can produce a gold bearing concentrate that can then be fed directly to a batch or continuous intensive cyanidation unit. Treatment of a gravity/flotation concentrate by intensive cyanidation may be processed by the InLine Leach Reactor (ILR) developed by Gekko Systems of Australia. The advantages of the technology combining gravity/flotation followed by intensive cyanidation are significantly reduced capital costs; improved safety due to reduced cyanide inventories; the majority of tailings un-contaminated by cyanide; less energy required due to an opportunity for an increase in grind size û reducing green house gas emissions; detoxification of concentrate tailings can minimise tailings disposal and containment requirements.

"SUMMARYThis paper describes challenges faced when executing a programme of monitoring to measure the dynamics of currents and sediment plumes at a seamount and the solutions identified to deliver the measurements. The study site was the Tropic Seamount, which extends some 3300m above the surrounding seabed and is found at the southern limit of the Canary Island Seamount Province. The purpose of the study, which forms part of the Marine E-tech project, was to provide information on the interaction of flows with the seamount and to assess the behaviour of sediment plumes that could be generated from potential seabed mining operations targeting the recovery of ferromanganese crusts. Since the crest of the seamount is submerged to a depth of 1000m, much of the work was undertaken using remotely operated and autonomous vehicles supported by measurements from the surface vessel. Despite only limited information on currents being available for planning purposes, the combination of short term forecasting using a 3-dimesional hydrodynamic model of the study area coupled with the collection and analysis of reconnaissance data collected during the first phase of measurement activities made it possible to plan and execute a number of detailed hydrodynamic experiments on the seamount crest. The results of these experiments have advanced the understanding of the behaviour of sediment plumes in the deep ocean and will ultimately improve our ability to manage the impacts which may arise from deep sea mining operations."

Wet sticky iron ore poses particular difficulties in every aspect of the material handling process. Material hang-ups in bins, pipes and chutes; carry-back and spillage due to insufficient belt cleaning; clogging of screens; malfunctioning of crushers as well as rat holing of gravity reclaimed stockpiles are all predominantly due to the inherent cohesion and adhesion characteristics of the wet, sticky ore (Roberts, 1993). Limited understanding and quantitative measures on the stickiness of such a material significantly lower the mining operation efficiency.This research aims to investigate the cohesion and adhesion characteristics of the wet, sticky ore on physical modelling, experimental techniques and numerical implementation. Initially, the suitable bridging mechanism that contributes to the cohesive and adhesive forces within the iron ore material was identified (Hering, Martin and Stohrer, 1989; Rumpf, 1958). A cohesion/adhesion energy density factor based contact model was then introduced to describe the stickiness of the material. Secondly, an experimental system was proposed to directly test the stickiness of the material. Such a system is able to obtain both the cohesive/adhesive shear force and tensile force of the material at a specific moisture content. Lastly, the implementation of the proposed cohesion/adhesion model into the discrete element modelling (DEM) software was also discussed. A cohesion/adhesion calibration for modelling wet sticky iron ore in DEM was then conducted to ensure the material modelled in the simulation is reflective of the reality.From the study, understanding of the cohesion/adhesion characteristics of the wet iron ore material is significantly enhanced. Experimental and numerical outcomes can be directly applied for better designing or optimising the material handling processes that involve wet sticky iron ore. Na produção de bobinas laminadas a quente, além da força aplicada pelos cilindros de laminação sobre a tira para promover a redução de espessura, o material é também submetido a tensões avante e a ré, durante o seu bobinamento e desbobinamento, que devem ser inferiores ao limite de escoamento do material conforme sua temperatura de trabalho. Este estudo trata da caracterização das tensões de escoamento do aço elétrico de grão orientado com 3,2 % de silício em altas temperaturas. A necessidade do estudo surgiu devido a ocorrência do defeito estiramento durante processo de laminação a quente de acabamento em laminadores reversíveis tipo Steckel, defeito este que consiste no estreitamento da largura da tira em regiões localizadas. Isto acontece em função do desconhecimento do limite de escoamento real do material nas temperaturas de trabalho. Os ensaios foram realizados em máquina de tração a quente, em temperaturas previamente determinadas. Através dos resultados dos ensaios, foram determinadas as curvas tensão x deformação do aço e valores limitantes de tensão conforme variação da temperatura, para que o processo não exceda o limite de escoamento do material.

This study data has been collected on a three-month period from November 2020 to January 2021 and based on three different pits: Vindaloo Main, Vindaloo Central and Bouere. Both pits having specific geotechnical and geological properties. Vindaloo Main, VIM, and Central, VIC, have the same mineral composition as volcanic tuff with felsic intrusion or monzodiorite, both rock mass is fractured with small joint. Geotechnically the uniaxial compressive strength UCS between 200 to 300 Mpa, Young’s Modulus 110 Gpa and Poisson’s ratio between 0.1 to 0.2. Bouere pit is basically made of volcanic tuff stock works as intrusive, UCS between 200 to 300 Mpa, Young’s Modulus 103 Gpa and Poisson’s ratio between 0.2 to 0.3. The first step of this study was to collect various data from mining operations around the drilling and blasting inputs. This was based around the different scenario of drilling parameters and the outcomes on the blasting, and how they impact load and haul operations and productivities of excavators from the heave to the last flitch. In most cases surface photos of the blast do not represent the overall fragmentation in the blast volume. Photos of the different flitches will not show only the effect of blast, as the loading operation generating more fragmentation by applying weight on the muck pile. Then the record of the different material uses for feeding. The last part of the analysis is the physical data from process plant such as particle size, throughput rate, both for the crusher and the mill, per pit and material and the specific Bond Work index (BWI). Fine particle quantity production is also a key point as is one direct indicator of milling performance. In overall, making link to BWI can influence at each stage of the mining to the processing operation. Drill and blast constitute a high cost in hard rock mining and trying to reduce these costs without an overview of all the integrated processes and context could end up by cost relocating to other activities in the process. However, the cost associated to size reduction builds exponentially as the particle size becomes smaller.

Enterprise optimization is a relatively new optimization approach to mine planning used to jointly consider all aspects of a mining operation affecting the mine planning process and related valuation. In this paper, it is applied at SEMAFO's Mana operations in Burkina Faso, consisting of several open pits and a proposed underground mine. The surface-minable ore is relatively shallow, and the pits are long and linear. The underground operations, as currently envisioned, will consist of a stoping operation accessed by two ramps from the surface. Power is a concern at this property due to local power being produced largely by diesel generators, and it has become one of the key optimization constraints. Other important parameters are the mining and processing rates, underground configuration and cutover elevation. Enterprise optimization was found to improve net present value for the Mana Operations property by simultaneously optimizing multiple parameters and constraints to arrive at an optimal pit and mining phase design, optimal cut-off grades over time, and optimal ore feed based on ore hardness, power constraints, and head wades. Reserves were expanded several times over the course of the study to improve the valuation of the mining operation and put SEMAFO in its present enviable position of ongoing reserve increases.

A rigorous methodology for prediction of flotation plant performance is presented, which is based on a standardised batch flotation test called the MFT. The work is part of the FLEET program, developed by MinnovEX with the support of seven large mining firms. The methodology is divided into three key steps: direct measurement of the kinetics of true flotation in the pulp, independent of hydraulic entrainment and other froth effects in the batch cell; benchmarking of the industrial plant over a broad range of ore types and operation conditions; and model calibration to describe froth effects in the plant, with a minimal number of parameters. To date, the methodology has been applied with success at several industrial plants, encompassing copper, gold, nickel, iron, lead, zinc and coal operations. This paper includes a description of the laboratory testwork procedure and scale-up to full industrial circuits. Examples of industrial application are also presented.

O presente artigo discute as interferências causadas pelo incremento gradual de umidade nos minérios produzidos atualmente, especialmente aqueles produzidos diretamente para carregamento. O aumento de umidade representa um desafio constante no transporte e tratamento dos materiais produzidos, uma vez que a simplificação dos fluxogramas pode também significar uma importante parcela na redução dos custos, tema hoje primordial na sobrevivência de qualquer empreendimento de minério de ferro. A utilização de reagentes auxiliares para ajudar no tratamento e transporte desses materiais pode significar a diferença entre a manutenção ou o fechamento de uma mina.
