Após a edição da RoHS Directive 2002/95/EC, diretiva que entrou em vigor em 1º de julho 2006 proibindo a utilização de seis substâncias perigosas: chumbo, mercúrio, cádmio, cromo hexavalente, bifenilos polibromados e éteres difenil-polibromados, fabricantes de equipamentos eletroeletrônicos passaram a utilizar soldas livres de chumbo (lead free) para montagem de suas placas de circuito impresso. A SAC 305 é um tipo de solda muito utilizada pelas empresas fabricantes de placas de circuito impresso. O presente trabalho visa caracterizar este tipo de solda verificando sua composição e identificar se a mesma se encontra livre de elementos perigosos ao ambiente. Avaliou-se a extração de metais como Ag e Sn através de digestão ácida em água-régia e rota HNO3 a temperatura ambiente. A composição do licor lixiviado foi caracterizada por espectrometria de emissão óptica com acoplamento de plasma induzido (ICP-OES). Os resultados indicam que a solda SAC 305 atende a RoHS, possui 2,7% Ag, 96,4% Sn e 0,9% de outros metais e a melhor rota para extração de Ag foi a HNO3 e para Sn foi a água-régia.

Pyrometallurgical processes for recovering platinum group metals (PGMs) from spent catalyst have been the focus of current research for many years. They suffer from high energy consumption, large trapping agent consumption and huge slag production. Because of versatility of PGMs-containing spent catalysts, comprehensive recovery of valuable metals from these catalysts from an experimental point of view remains a challenge. In this study, thermodynamic analysis of pyrometallurgical smelting process in the presence of various additives for ef ficient recovery of PGMs was performed. It showed that addition of sodium salts would promote the migration and separation of the precious metals from carrier of the spent catalyst. By replacing calcium oxide with sodium carbonate and sodium borate, the smelting temperature could be reduced by more than 200 °C, which agreed well with the experimental findings.

The Olympic Dam copper-uranium-gold-silver deposit, located 520 km NNW of Adelaide, S.A. was discovered by Western Mining Corporation Ltd in 1975, and is now being developed as a joint venture between WMC (5107o) and the BP Group (4907o). The discovery of this deposit resulted from the application of a conceptual model for the formation of sediment-hosted copper deposits. This model postulated that the oxidation of basaltic rocks could release significant amounts of copper into solution and that, under favourable conditions, these solutions might pass upwards along faults, and the copper be precipitated in reduced- facies sediments higher in the sequence. The Stuart Shelf province was chosen for exploration because geological interpretation suggested the presence of suitable basal- tic source rocks at depth, and favourable host sedimentary rocks in the overlying sequence. The Olympic Dam site was selected for drill-testing because of the presence of coincident gravity and aeromagnetic anomalies suggesting the presence of basalts and/or mineralisation at depth. This site also had a favourable tectonic signature, indicating the presence of deep crustal structures which might have allowed fluid migration.

Hydrometallurgical recovery of rare earth elements from phosphors obtained from end-of-life fluorescent lamps involve leaching followed by extraction of dissolved metals from solution. The similar properties of rare earth elements make selective recovery of individual elements challenging. The aim of the paper was to investigate the extraction of primarily Ce and Tb from a hydrochloric acid leach solution also containing other REEs (Y and Eu) as well as impurity metals (Ca and Al). Batch solvent extraction tests were performed with di-(2-ethylhexyl) phosphoric acid (DEHPA) at various extractant concentrations, pH conditions and organic-to-aqueous ratios. Extraction isotherms and separation factors for the range of conditions tested in the project are presented in the paper. Separation of individual REEs was not possible at the conditions investigated, but a mixed REE product can be obtained in a single extraction stage operated at a pH of 0.5 using 1 M extractant at an O/A ratio of 1; these conditions resulted in complete Y and Eu, 95 % Ce and 99 % Tb extraction with Ca and Al coextraction below 7 %. A better quality mixed REE product can be produced by operating at lower pH and extractant concentration conditions, but this would require a larger number of extraction stages. This paper aims to present the development of a 600mm U-Pile that was done in Gerdau’s Ouro Branco Heavy Section Mill in order to feed the local market with a product.The focus of this study is to show the developmental process the Mill went through until it was prepared for hot trials. All roll pass and guide designs were developed by our own team. Analytical tools like Finite Element Analysis and reduced scale lead trials will be shown and how these tools impacted on the development timeframe and accuracy of the final results on steel.

About 90% of the barytes produced the world over is used for oil and gas drilling as weighting agent in drilling mud to control pressure, prevent blow out and provide lubrication. This is because of its unique properties like high specific gravity, water insolubility and intentness. India is one of the leading producers and exporters of barites. The Mangampeth Baryte deposit in Cuddapah district of Andhra Pradesh, India being the largest single deposit in the world having a reserves of about 80 million tonnes. Approximately 50% of the total reserves of grey barites of Mangampet deposit assays less than 92% BaSO4, the minimum stipulated grade for oil and gas drilling industries. To reach and recover the high grade barite, the overlying low grade has necessarily to be mined out and removed. At present this is being stacked separately at the mine site involving lot of labour and transport cost. Considerable barites is contained in the dumps adversely affecting the conservation and creating lot of environmental hazards. IBM being the premier organization in India in the field of conservation of minerals and environmental protection in mining has recognized the importance of adverse effect of these huge dumps at site. The Ore Dressing Division of IBM, Nagpur has characterized these dumps and developed the flotation process on a sample assaying 66% BaSO4 and 23.3% SiO2. The flotation concentrate obtained assayed 93.7% BaSO4, 2.38% SiO2 with BaSO4 recovery of 80% and meets the requirement of the oil industry. The flotation concentrate being non-wetable, can not be used as such as weighting agent, and hence the collector coating on the concentrate was removed either by acid treatment or heating to make it water wetable. The concentrate was 92% -325 mesh and having a specific gravity 4.3. The barites concentrates so produced meets the size, grade and specific gravity specifications required for use in oil drilling industry. Apart from the financial benefits the process augurs well for the commercial exploitation of these huge dumps in terms of (1) additional recovery of these valuable minerals and conservation, (2) reduction in dumps value, (3) improvement in environment and offering an excellent potential for export.

In Victoria’s onshore Gippsland Basin, geology is driving brown coal developments, and geologists are key decision-makers. Prompted by volatile energy prices and the likelihood of a carbon constrained future, significant work has been carried out on the next generation of technologies to be applied to this giant resource. These include new-generation gasification technologies, coal conversion processes yielding products as diverse as diesel and fertiliser, drying technologies producing thermal and metallurgical coals and in situ conversion processes. However, coals aren’t coals, and brown coal available for new projects will have different quality parameters and mining economics from that currently mined.New projects are likely to be developed on coals with moisture contents averaging 60 per cent and corresponding low energy values. Whilst ash values will be low, averaging just 5 per cent (dry basis), this will at times approach 10 per cent, which is a level that would challenge the installed-generation technologies. Sulfur values will average 0.4 per cent (dry basis), but at times exceed 0.6 per cent, requiring technologies that address the potential for sulfur dioxide emissions. Whilst localised high levels of the fluxes iron (>1 per cent dry basis) and sodium (>0.3 per cent dry basis) would increase fouling of installed technologies, they may be suitable for selected next-generation technologies.Project viability for this next generation of technologies will be strongly influenced by mining cost, and geologists are playing a role in identifying higher-value coal. At its simplest, this is being achieved for open cut mines through regional, vertical strip ratio assessments, which are considered a first-order proxy for mining cost. Follow up assessments are incorporating mining and processing cost, coal quality penalties and product revenues. At a regional scale, it is informing the likely location and relative timing of future mine developments, as well as thinking around rehabilitation strategies, infrastructure and land-use planning.For deeper coal, factors like macro permeability, the ability to isolate seams from aquifers, groundwater chemistry, pressure temperature conditions, connection with groundwater recharge and in situ biota are being used as vectors to in situ coal conversion opportunities.Matching coal to the next generation of technologies has benefited from regional-scale geological studies of coal quality and mining economics, and has benefited from early engagement between geologists, technology developers and project proponents.CITATION:Maher, S and Love, G, 2014. "In the FFC-Cambridge process, the cathodic dissociation of oxide and CO/CO2 production on carbon anode is the basis for metal production in a CaCl2 bath. By using an inert intermetallic anode, the CO2 evolution can be eliminated altogether with acceleration in the electro-reduction kinetics. At present the process suffers from slow reduction kinetics of TiO2 to Ti metal, which can be enhanced significantly by the incorporation of alkali species in the TiO2 pellet at the cathode and in the CaCl2 bath in the presence of an intermetallic inert anode. Nearly full metallization with greater than 99% of Ti metal containing 1500 ppm of oxygen is possible to achieve in less than 16 hours of electro-reduction. Analyses of phase composition and the microstructures morphology in fully metallized pellets revealed the presence of localized solidified Ti layer, indicating that fast reduction process also involved formation of liquid phase as middle stage reaction. In addition, in situ creation of porosity and maintain higher current level during electrolysis process were two key factors to fully reduction of TiO2.IntroductionDuring cathodic dissociation of TiO2 in a CaCl2 bath and anodic evolution of CO2 on a carbon anode, which is the basis for the FFC Cambridge process [1], the rate of metallization slows down due to the formation of CaTiO3 at the reaction interface. Calcium and alkaline earth perovskites are known for their poor electrical conductivity which adversely affects the overall electro-reduction. One of the ways to increase the porosity is via the addition of polyethylene precursors in the pellet or by directly starting from perovskite [2, 3]. The experimental evidences shown in the literature confirm although the speed of reaction increases, but a complete or near complete metallization is not possible by enhancing the in-situ porosity alone, as the insulating perovskite is very slow to decompose under the equilibrium that prevails in the cell. Plethoric evidences on carbon anode show with the current decrease gradually, and finally stabilize at a very low value between 0.2 and 0.4 A, which is a testimony of the presence of perovskite insulating barrier in the current path. Our aim in this paper is to demonstrate the mechanism of enhanced electro-reduction when alkali ions are present in the oxide pellet at cathode and in the bath. We also show for the first time the use of an intermetallic anode for Ti-metal production using the FFC Cambridge process."

Current methods for scratching a piece of rock to obtain or check the characteristics of its component material can sometimes be expensive and time consuming. Scratching a rock core requires an object with a point that it is capable of sliding along the surface of the rock while recording the response from the rock due to the sliding. With the idea of providing a cost efficient solution for a scratch device, a new generation turntable arm, composed of a cartridge with a diamond stylus and a USB output connection to the computer, was used to record the vibrations from the sliding of the stylus along a rock core surface. The output sound from the stylus was captured with the computer as an audio input signal. The raw sound data was recorded in a standard waveform audio format (wav) file, and post-processed using sound spectrum analyzer software (Spectra-Lab) to capture numerical data such as frequency, amplitude, and noise from the file. The results for frequency, amplitude, and noise were compared and plotted against the scanned surface of the rock core in the search for correlations that might represent specific characteristics of the surface being scratched.

As core part of flotation column, aerator has been always priority research. A new type of porous aerator made of stainless sintered microcellular material is designed , which diameter is between 20µm to 40µm. High bubble surface area flux is obtained at low air pressure 20kPa by this type of aerator in water. In order to extend its applied range ,experiments were carried out in alkali slurry (pH=12) , resulting with porous aerator clogged after working 20 days . Sampling the cross-section of aerator detected by microscope and X-ray diffraction ,the reason clogging was found. Then plugging aerator was reactivated after putting it in acidic liquor treated by ultrasonic for about ten minutes. On-line aerator maintenance can be done in no down time , and it can be repetitive-used after recovered ,so reduced capital costs.

The Freeport McMoRan Bagdad Solvent Extraction (SX) circuit is the oldest plant of its kind currently in operation. The plant was commissioned in 1969 and was the second SX-EW operation to be built following the Ranchers Bluebird solvent extraction and electrowinning (SX-EW) plant near Miami, Arizona. Over the years of operation, the configuration of the SX has gone through many changes to accommodate a variety of pregnant leach solution (PLS) grades and flows. Although modifications to the original plant configuration are numerous, the Bagdad SX circuit has maintained its general form consisting of multiple long and narrow settlers. The unique configuration of the Bagdad SX circuit presents a variety of operational advantages and challenges; however, it continues to operate at a level recognized in the industry as excellent.

Leaching of galvanized steel coatings allows the steel substrate to be used as a zinc-free scrap source to steel and iron furnaces. In this study the behaviors of sulfuric acid leaching solutions are investigated. The ranked significance of the variables are shown to be acid concentration > temperature > zinc concentration. Examination of the leaching mechanism finds the rate-limiting step to be the cathodic hydrogen reduction reaction. This rate is not only influenced by acid concentration, but also by the hydrogen reduction exchange current density. Dezincing leaching rates are improved by taking advantage of the higher exchange current density of the iron substrate versus the zinc coating. This is accomplished in practice by increasing the exposed interfacial zinc:iron surface area through shredding. Also, a leach control mechanism is proposed through online monitoring of the zinc-iron couple mixed potential.

"Increased interest in seismic soil liquefaction and preventative soil stabilization sets the stage for improved deep compaction methods using pile driving techniques. In 1971, L.B. Foster Company personnel patented a method of deep compaction using a vibratory pile hammer and pile probe. The technique had some success, but did not produce consistent results and thus found its way to obscurity. Other patents attempted to modify the technique by various probe modifications, but again without measurable improvement from a practical point of view. Solutions to economical deep compaction up to 100-foot depths particularly in saturated granular soils would have a great impact on the construction industry and new bulkhead structures being developed, thus PND was prompted into related research and development. The advent of higher horsepower vibratory hammers, coupled with PND engineers’ experiments, observations and measurements, led to an “H” pile probe design which has produced measured soil density improvements up to 250% using SPT “N60” values as a measure. Case histories of two projects involving extensive SPT soil sampling comparative measurements will be discussed along with findings that led to the compaction success. Applications to numerous modern “Open Cell” bulkhead projects will be presented and discussed.INTRODUCTIONNecessity often is the basis for innovation and such was the case for needed cost-effective deep soil fill compaction in Open Cell bulkheads where granular fill below water levels was often placed.Open Cell bulkheads were developed by PND Incorporated starting in 1980, for the express purpose of meeting client demands for an economical, easily constructed, extremely strong structure. Earth-filled structures historically have had a long history of problems with stability, scour and settlement.Open Cells are flexible steel sheet pile membranes supported by soil contact with embedded tail anchor walls.This concept creates an integral reinforced soil system. The result is a structure that can withstand large settlement and support a variety of very large loads. In effect, viewed from above the structure becomes a series of U-shaped horizontal membranes that require no toe embedment for stability. The Open Cell bulkhead is constructed of only three components: flat sheet piles, fabricated connector wyes and anchor piles. Compared to alternative structures, several cost savings are realized from this land based construction such as, reduced sheet pile area, greater construction tolerance, minimal pile penetration, and simplified backfilling procedures. In seismic regions or weak soils, the tail walls can be extended as required to guarantee fill mass stability."

"Researchers at the Colorado School of Mines have studied the influence of headgate side ventilation controls near the longwall start-up room on the formation of explosive gas zones (EGZs) in underground coal longwall bleeder ventilated gobs. In a project funded by the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) researchers developed a Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) model to study the formation of methane-air mixtures in the gob, start-up room, and bleeder entries. The relative change in size and location of EGZs are examined in response to ventilation controls in the headgate side bleeder entries near the start-up room. Modeling suggests that adjustments to the ventilation controls can be made to minimize the size of the EGZ. However the EGZ may form in or around active working areas regardless of the ventilation control settings. Research found regulators on the crosscuts into start-up room and first entry inby can force air into to crosscuts outby the start-up room causing more air to flow through the gob. INTRODUCTION Underground longwall mine ventilation systems may operate with either a bleeder ventilated gob or a progressively sealed gob. Bleeder ventilated gobs must meet the standards for safe operation of the bleeder system by examining bleeder system effectiveness. As defined in the United States Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) Program Policy Letter (PPL) No. P13-V-12 (MSHA 2013), the pillared area or gob is “any area where a reduction in pillar size has occurred during retreat mining” and includes the “caved and broken material, the interstices within the caved material, and the open spaces surrounding the caved material.” The PPL further states that the intended purpose of ventilating the gob is “to protect active workings from the hazards of methane accumulations …” The requirements for operating a bleeder system as stated in The United States Code of Federal Regulations (CFR 2013) Title 30 §75.334(b) is to pass ventilation air though the gob “and to continuously dilute and move methane-air mixtures [from the gob] away from active workings and into a return air course …” where the concentration cannot exceed 2 percent methane (CFR 30 § 75.323). Further clarification of the bleeder system as described in the PPL states the following: “A bleeder system includes the area from which pillars are wholly or partially recovered, bleeder entries, bleeder connectors, and all associated ventilation control devices that control the air movement through the area. Bleeder entries are air courses designed and maintained as part of the bleeder system.”"

O processo de lingotamento contínuo consiste de uma série de etapas que promoverão a extração de calor de maneira controlada do aço líquido, com o objetivo de promover sua solidificação. Uma vez que a solidificação é considerada uma transformação de fase, regida essencialmente pela troca térmica, o enfoque do processo de lingotamento contínuo se encontra direcionado para o perfil térmico de resfriamento do aço desenvolvido ao longo dos veios da máquina. É extremamente importante para a qualidade final do tarugo que este processo de extração de calor ocorra a taxas controladas, de maneira contínua e uniforme em todas suas faces. Segregação, trincas e romboidade são alguns dos problemas de qualidade que podem ser originados devido a um controle não assertivo ou deficiência do sistema de refrigeração. Os tarugos lingotados do aço 1545-D, produzidos na máquina de lingotamento contínuo da Votorantim Siderurgia Barra Mansa, apresentavam com frequência trincas sub-superficiais nas quatro direções de resfriamento e a uma distância constante da superfície do tarugo. Através de equações de solidificação foi constatado que a profundidade em que as trincas se encontravam nos tarugos correspondia a um trecho da máquina no qual existia gap de refrigeração, provocando reaquecimento do material e o surgimento de trincas devido ao regime de contração/dilatação ao qual o mesmo estava submetido. Tais conclusões permitiram comprovar falha no projeto de refrigeração secundária da máquina.

As indústrias cerâmicas do Parque Industrial do Município de Campos dos Goytacazes-RJ utilizam como matéria-prima a argila oriunda das jazidas presentes na planície de inundação do Rio Paraíba do Sul. Os artefatos produzidos por essas indústrias, que são na sua maioria tijolos e telhas, apresentam propriedades provenientes das transformações que ocorrem na constituição mineralógica da matéria-prima após queima, bem como do processo de fabricação empregado. Com o intuito de melhor entender o processo de fabricação destes artefatos e como suas propriedades se desenvolvem, este trabalho pretende caracterizar e identificar os minerais constituintes de uma camada argilosa do Município de Campos dos Goytacazes-RJ, usando, para isso, técnica de Difração de Raios-X, e analisar as transformações térmicas ocorridas através de ADT/ATG/TG e microscopia óptica.

In tungsten ion-exchange process, excessive sodium impurity enters into ammonium tungstate solution. However, the Na content of the final ammonium paratungstate (APT) product must be strictly controlled. Consequently, it is necessary to remove Na from the ammonium tungstate solution during processing in order to obtain the required purity of APT. In this study, porous Na specific absorbent, Na1+xAlxTi2−x(PO4)3, is used to remove Na from the ammonium tungstate solution. Through experiments, the effect of reagent concentration of Na1+xAlxTi2−x(PO4)3, reaction time, reaction temperature and Na concentration on the Na removal were investigated. The results showed that under optimal reaction conditions of reagent amount of NATP 1.0 times of theoretical amount, reaction temperature 25 °C and reaction time 15 min, the Na removal from commercial (NH4)2WO4 solution can reach 98%. Na1+xAlxTi2−x(PO4)3 has a good applicability to different Na+ concentrations. The obtained APT product reaches the national standard purity of zero level.
