"When fuel costs increase dramatically, waste to energy (WTE) conversion technologies become a good alternative to produce energy. The potential energy available in domestic wastes, in developed countries, could be upwards of 4% of their total energy needs. A very limited development has been made of the coal-fields of this Territory. This is to be accounted for by the fact that a number of the coal-fields lack railroad transportation, by the distance of other fields from the consumers (due to restricted settlements), and finally by the poorer quality of a number of coals which have been mined as compared to others which can be economically imported into the Territory. The consumption of coal in Utah during 1886, outside of that used by the railway companies, was: Tons. Low temperature X-ray diffraction and thermal property studies of the solid-solid state phase transition for the polyalcohols (pentaerythritol (PE), pentaglycerine (PG) and neopentylglycol (NPG)) thermal energy storage solid solutions have been investigated by using X-ray diffractometry and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) methods. X-ray diffraction studies on polyalcohols solid solutions, PE-NPG and PG-NPG, are from ?10oC to 50oC. XRD results shows the + mixed phase at the related low temperature (?10oC) for both PE-NPG and PG-NPG solid solutions. At high temperature range, XRD results show phase for PG-NPG solid solution and + mixed phase for PE-NPG solid solution. There are only two Bragg peaks, (111) and (200), shown in phase XRD patterns. The polyalcohols solid solutions have been cycled 5 times between -20oC to 100oC at different DSC scan rates to study the phase transition properties. DSC results of both PE-NPG and PG-NPG solid solutions show that the solid-solid state phase transition is near room temperature. Potential areas for improvement in flotation performance were identified during JKTech model development surveys in October 2003. Subsequent implementation of the JKTech recommendations in consultation with flotation cell manufacturer Outokumpu have resulted in gold flotation recovery increases of more than four per cent over a two-year period. One of these recommendations was the installation of High Shear Stators in the Cleaner and Recleaner flotation cells. The High Shear Stator installation project was justified based on simulations completed using JKSimFloat. Bubble size measurements completed before and after installation of High Shear Stators showed a reduction in mean bubble size of approximately 50 per cent in the Cleaner cells. Both Cleaner and Recleaner banks showed a significant narrowing of the bubble size distributions following the installation. Plant gold recovery increase resulting from the installation of High Shear Stators was 1.1 per cent, with a 1.9 per cent increase in flotation gold recovery and 5.4 per cent increase in flotation sulfur recovery. Based on the 1.1 per cent recovery increase and total project cost of less than $200 000, the High Shear Stator Project NPV was $8 200 000 with a 0.25 year payback period.

After the simulated ‘mining’ experiment (INDEX) in the Central Indian Ocean (in 1997); the restoration of benthic environment was monitored for 4 years (2001-2005) at 5 locations in and around the test site and at 3 reference stations (20-80 km) from the test site. A comparison of long-term monitoring data with the pre-mining and post mining observations has shown that: • The concentration of silt fraction which was the highest (50-60%) at most locations during ‘pre-mining’ and ‘post-mining’ phases, had reduced (40-50%) during monitoring phases. • There was a corresponding increase in clay concentration (50-60%) during the monitoring phase, implying change in the size of sediment particles settling on the seabed, a trend that was also observed at the reference locations. • The initial increase in water content and decrease in shear strength after the experiment, which appeared to be returning to normal in monitoring-1 (2001), was reversed during subsequent monitoring phases (2002-2005), indicating changes in benthic environmental conditions. • Sediment organic matter and pore-water chemical data have not only indicated partial restoration of geochemical properties after the experiment, but also cyclic changes during the monitoring period.

Direct iron smelting reduction has been examined using a modified 50 kg induction furnace. The furnace was equipped with continuous raw material feeding, a top oxygen lance, argon bottom bubbling, and sensors for measurement of gas and bath temperatures, gas composition and other parameters. In the base case, iron ore was charged at the rate of 1.5 kg/h, coke flowrate was adjusted to maintain a char fraction in the slag at 30 wt per cent, the oxygen flowrate was 100 Nl/min and the post-combustion ratio (PCR) was 60 per cent. The PCR was varied from 45 to 75 per cent by changing the lance height relative to the bath surface. Smelting reduction of Whaleback iron ore was investigated at different post-combustion ratios and iron ore feedrates using coke and coals with different volatile matter. The rate of iron oxide reduction increased with increasing iron oxide concentration in the slag, with a slight deviation from a linear function. The post-combustion ratio affected iron ore reduction and partitioning of elements between phases in the smelting reduction furnace. The high volatile coal investigated was found to be unsuitable for iron smelting reduction in the laboratory furnace.

Geologists employed by Metals Exploration Pty. Ltd. discovered nickel enrichment at Greenvale, 180 kilometres West of Townsville, in 1967. Subsequent drilling proved an ore body containing 45 million dry tonnes of ore containing an average of 1.5% nickel and 0.11% cobalt. The Freeport Minerals Company, who had experience in treating lateritic nickel ore, were invited to participate in development of the ore body. This resulted in the formation of the operating company Queensland Nickel Pty. Ltd., jointly owned by Freeport Queensland Nickel Inc. and Metals Exploration Queensland Pty. Ltd. With the completion of successful pilot plant testing of Greenvale ore at the Freeport research facilities at Belle Chasse, Louisiana, a treatment plant was constructed at Yabulu, 24 kilometres North West of Townsville. A 225 kilometre railway line was built connecting the Greenvale Mine and Yabulu Treatment Plant. The ore reduction and ammonia/ammonium carbonate leaching flowsheet is similar to that constructed and operated by the Freeport Minerals Company during World War II at Nicaro, Cuba. The Bunker Hill mine in the Coeur d'Alene mining district at Kellogg, Idaho, has been a major producer of Pb-Ag-Zn ores since its discovery in 1887. The mine has produced over 29 million tons of ore from some 20 to 25 veins and ore zones and now covers an area approximately 1 mi long by 0.5 mi wide. The active section of the mine extends from 2500 ft above sea level to 1600 ft below sea level. Ore production is presently at the rate of about 1700 tpd. A 2-mi adit, the Kellogg tunnel, at the 2500 elevation provides access to the main shaft area. Ore is hoisted to the adit level through a 5000-ft. 50º-inclined shaft extending to the lowermost haulage level 1200 ft below sea level. Primary shaft service for men and materials is supplied by three major internal inclined shafts equipped with double-drum hoists. Present production requires ten levels to serve for main line track haulage. These range up to 5000 ft in length and are either 200 or 400 vertical ft apart. Also, many intermediate levels exist throughout the mine.

Carbonate replacement tin deposits in the areas studiedhere are genetically related to biotite granites. Biotite in the granites is distinguished by distinctive compositional features. High MgO content is found in biotite in the Renison Bell granite; high MnO and A1203 contents in the Gejiu granite; and high FeO content in the Xinlu granite. The compositional features of biotite in the granites are reflected in skarn minerals formed around the granites.Granites associated with these tin deposits are characterized by different accessory minerals. Magnetite-bearing granite in the Xinlu deposit is related to the andraditic garnet (andradite 40-45 mole%)-hedenbergite skarn, with tin mineralization occurring in the contact skarn only. The sphene-bearing granite in the Gejiu deposit is related to the grossular garnet (grossular 50-60 mole%, almandine 20-30 mole%) -salite skarn, with tin mineralization occurring in the contact skarn, as well as stratabound replacement orebodies in the distal skarn. The ilmenite-bearing granite in the Dachang deposit and the Renison Bell deposit is related to the grossular-diopside skam, with tin mineralization occurring 500-1500 metres vertically and 1.5-3 km horizontally away from the granite contact.

Introduction An investigation of the bituminous sands of Alberta was begun by the Mines Branch, Department of Mines, in 1913. This investigation was interrupted during the period 1916-19, but was resumed in 1920. Work completed in October 1924 has included detailed topographical surveys of extensive areas, examination and sampling of principal outcrops, the mining of trial shipments, laying of demonstration pavements, and a study of methods adapted to the recovery of hydrocarbons from the crude bituminous sand. Bituminous sand consists, for the most part, of clear quartz grains, cemented together by petroleum residuum or bitumen. In form the quartz grains are most irregular, varying from sharply angular to smooth, waterworn shapes. The bitumen has a specific gravity of 1.018 and has a penetration of 9.00 mm. (77° F. 100 grams 1 sec.). The percentage of bitumen associated with the sand varies from 5 to 25 per cent. A large tonnage is available in which the percentage of bitqmen is 15 per cent or over. Production Up to the present time, production has been restricted to requirements for experimental .and demonstration work. The total quantity shipped for such purposes has not exceeded 750 tons.

During the cyanide leaching process of gold and silver, ores that come from the transition zones which typically con-tains low levels of sulfide may produce one or more of the following reduced sulfur species: sulfide (HS ), polysulfides (Sn ), thiocyanate (SCN ), thiosulfate (S2O3 ), trithionate (S3O6 ), tetrathionate (S4O6 ), pentathionate (S5O6 ) and hexathionate (S6O6 ). The actual speciation of the reduced sulfur species in the circuits will primarily depend on the re-dox potential, pH, cyanide levels and existing sulfur species in recycled process water, as well as the presence of other reac-tive metal species. Development of an accurate analytical method for sul-fur species in cyanide leaching units of gold ores where sul-fur speciation occurs has an important role in explaining the metal recovery deviations. This study presents the speciation of sulfur species and development of an ion chromatography method to analyze the reduced sulfur species thiocyanate, thio-sulfate, trithionate and tetrathionate in cyanide leaching circuits for gold ores. The method developed has resulted in the precise quantification of target sulfur species in leach solutions.

Kosaka smelter is a copper smelter located in Akita Prefecture in the northern part of Japan. It has treated complex sulfide concentrates for a long time. Recently, in addition to metal production from ores, the company has been working on the recycling of metals by using this metallurgical technology. Metals recovered are primarily gold, silver, palladium, copper and lead from copper scraps, electronic board scraps, silver oxide batteries, spent lead acid batteries, semiconductor chips, cellular phones, and automotive emissions catalyst. In particular, electronic board scraps and cellular phones can be valuable raw materials. These electronic scraps are fed into the flash smelting furnace after size reduction in a shredder that was introduced in 1999. Due to the growing demand for personal computers and cellular phones, the amount of electronic board scraps available for recycling increased. At present, these secondary materials are good raw materials for Kosaka smelter since the smelter is already used to dealing with complex raw materials. The recycled metals account for up between 5 and 20 percent of the total production at Kosaka Smelter. In particular, over 90 percent of the palladium in the secondary materials can be recovered.

In plant tests with a 9.7 m hearth diameter high top pressure blast furnace the influence of disintegration of sinter during low-temperature reduction on blast furnace performance was evaluated. The blast furnace burden during the test period consisted of 74% self-fluxing sinter with a basicity of CaO/Si02 = 1.3, 15% pellets, 6% lump ore, and 5% recirculated slags. The sinter for the test was produced in a modern sinter plant. By changing the fuel rate and/or the MgO content at a constant basicity CaO/Si02 sinters with different low-temperature disintegration properties could be produced. The blast furnace was equipped with pressure monitoring devices at medium height of the furnace stack wall. This device provided in addition to the normal operating data readings of pressure losses in the upper and lower part of the furnace. The basic physico-chemical factors determining low-temperature disintegration are explained. The testing devices and the extent of quality control measures of sinter during the test period are outlined. Conclusions are drawn from the plant test in relation to sinter properties.

Koffiefontein Mine commissioned a distributed antenna system as an underground communication backbone for the DISPATCH® production management system during September1999. STAS Ltd, the supplier of the Distributed Antenna System developed the System for an Integrated and Automated Mine (SIAM). This communication system, in conjunction with DISPATCH®, fulfils Koffiefontein Mine’s present and future requirements for accurate draw control, increasing productivity and improving working conditions. The DAS as SIAMnet communication network was selected by the mine, because of its superior data transmission rate of up to 1.5Mbps at 860MHz, video and Ethernet transmission facilities, and future enhancement abilities. The results of the commissioning tests confirmed the quality and integrity of the data and voice communication. The initial installation enabled 9000 metres of underground production tunnels with voice communication inclusive of 3700 metres having data communication. This article discusses the requirements and selection of the telecommunication system for an underground mine. A description of the installed distributed antenna system follows with a summary of the commissioning tests. A discussion of the reliability of the components is followed by conclusions with suitable recommendations. Keywords: distributed antenna system, underground mining, telecommunication system.

Data on dust control practices, geology, and occupational exposures were gathered for approximately eighty underground continuous mining units. Despite silica contents in excess of 5%, nearly forty units successfully maintained silica concentrations at or below 100 µg/rn3 on a majority of occupational dust samples while the remainder had difficulty maintaining this level. These two sample sets were termed group A operations and group B operations, respectively. Analyses of productivities, geologies, and dust control parameters revealed only minor differences between these two groups. Subsequent analyses of face ventilation design showed considerable differences in silica exposure and silica content between group A and group B at the continuous mining machine and roof bolter operator occupations. These differences were minimal when using exhaust curtain ventilation with a dust scrubber', This face ventilation system may benefit operations having difficulty controlling silica dust exposure and silica dust content. Finally, the collected data showed that occupational samples from group B operations possessed generally higher silica exposures and silica content than similar samples from group A. The single head roof bolter (helper) possessed among the highest silica exposures and silica contents in both groups.

The introduction of high-nickel anodes to CCR in 2006 resulted in an increase of nickel in anodic slimes. Removal of the nickel in these slimes to below 3.0% is necessary in order to prevent slag viscosity problems in the subsequent pyrometallurgical step. A lower specification of 0.5% was chosen in order to minimize Ni losses to the slag and to recover this nickel as NiSO4. A 2-stage autoclave process, which was patented by CCR in 1992, was chosen to treat the high nickel slimes. Laboratory and plant?scale tests were performed in 2004 in order to validate the results of this process with the present slimes. These results along with corrosion tests were used to design two brick-lined autoclaves. These autoclaves were installed in October 2006 and successfully commissioned within 8 weeks. A "Design of Experiment" test program was performed in 2006 on an alternative autoclave process that reversed the cycles in the patented process. The effects of temperature and acid content were modeled using the results. The alternative process will be validated with the new autoclaves.
