"The grit blasting is a low-cost technique successfully used to enhance mechanical fixation of the implants through increasing their roughness. As a result of the severe plastic surface deformation, it produces subsurface effects such as grain refinement, hardening and compressive residual stresses which are generally evaluated with destructive techniques. In this research work, non-contacting and contacting thermoelectric power measurements are performed in blasted 316L VM and Ti-6AI-4V specimens using Ah03 and Zr02 particles which yield a coarse and a fine rough surface, respectively. This study correlates the microstructural changes induced by the grit blasting treatment and the limitations and advantages of each of the nondestructive thermoelectric techniques based on the Seebeck effect used to evaluate these biomaterials.IntroductionIt is well known that surface properties play an important role in metallic materials used in bio-medical applications. Since the biological response is correlated directly with surface properties it is comprehensible the intense activity in superficial modification by physics or chemistry methods in this field. Grit blasting, one of the most popular surface modification of metallic biomaterials, enhances the mechanical fixation of the implant through the increase in roughness [1-3]. Roughening is developed by bombarding the surface with a high-velocity jet of ceramic particles, being the final roughness a function of the processing parameters (pressure, distance, time, ... ) and blasting particles (nature, shape, size). As the plastically deformed surface layer tries to expand relatively to the intact interior of the specimen, residual compressive stress gradients develops perpendicular to the surface at shallow depths with a maximum value at a depth in the range of 5 to 60 µm. This surface treatment also may cause subtle variations in the subsurface material properties, such as increased hardness and grain size refinement, which are consequences of the significant plastic deformation through cold work. Blasted affected zones may extend to a depth of up to about 200 µm. The subsurface hardening and the near-surface compressive stress gradient playa beneficial role by retarding fatigue crack nucleation and further growth, ultimately extending the fatigue life of the metallic part [4]. In this work, two non-destructive thermoelectric techniques (NDTT), the non-contacting and contacting thermoelectric power measurements were used to analyze the subsurface induced changes on blasted Ti-6AI-4V and 316L VM specimens using Al2O3 and Zr02 particles. Detailed information on the microstructural induced effects and subsurface mechanical properties were published elsewhere [5-8]. Here the nondestructive evaluation of the involved microstructural changes is used to assess the global subsurface damage. Advantages of using nondestructive techniques during manufacturing are envisaged."

Phase diagrams for the Ti-W and Ti-Ta systems were determined. The Ti-W system is characterized by a wide, two-phase region of ß plus tungsten which is derived from a peritectic reaction between the liquid and tungsten solid solutions. The ß field terminates in a eutectoid reaction between a titanium and tungsten terminal solid solution. Tantalum and ß titanium form a complete series of solid solutions. Other features of this system are the extensive a-ß field at low temperatures and an appreciable solubility of tantalum in a titanium. BOTH tungsten and tantalum were first thought to form ß-isomorphous systems with titanium as a result of early work' using powder-metallurgical techniques. Later work2 on arc-melted Ti-Ta alloys, made using a commercial titanium base, showed that, in the range of 0 to 10 pct, tantalum was soluble in ß titanium and that the a solubility extended to between 2 and 5 pct Ta at 790 °C. The present investigation covered the entire alloy range in both systems and was chiefly concerned with high-purity alloys at the titanium-rich end. The constitution of titanium-rich alloys made with a commercial titanium base was reported by Holla-day, Kura, and Jackson.3, 4 As will be shown in detail later, the early prediction of a isomorphism was true for the case of the Ti-Ta system, but not for the Ti-W system. The results of this investigation will be presented first. The experimental methods used are described in the Appendix. Ti-W System The entire Ti-W phase diagram is shown in Fig. 1. Details of the titanium-rich side are shown in Fig. 2. The chief features of the system are a ß eutectoid and a high-temperature peritectic between liquid and tungsten solid solution. Melting Range: Examination of cast structures of low and medium-tungsten-content ingots showed cored ß phase as the primary constituent. Fig. 3a illustrates a typical cast structure for alloys in the range of 20 to 30 pct W. From 30 to 72 pct W, coring was very severe. Alloys containing 72 through 88 pct W, however, showed definite evidence of a peritectic reaction between the liquid and a terminal solid solution of titanium in tungsten. Fig. 3b shows the cast structure for an 80 pct W alloy. A 95 pct W alloy, shown in Fig. 4, consisted primarily of primary tungsten solid solution plus a small quantity of ß probably rejected during cooling. Incipient-melting experiments located the peritectic temperature between 1850" and 1900°C and indicated that the reacting phases are liquid containing about 25 pct W and tungsten terminal solid solution containing about 8 pct Ti. THE diffusion of copper in silver has been studied by Sawatzky and Jaumot1 and Cahoon and Youdelis.2 Sawatzky and Jaumot measured tracer diffusion in single crystal specimens but the 12.9 h half-life of CU64 limited the time of the diffusion anneal to about 50 hr, and in consequence the minimum temperature of the investigation was 716°C. Cahoon and Youdelis employed polycrystalline diffusion couples, and measured the interdiffusion coefficient over the range 0 to 2 at. pct Cu. These experiments were performed at temperatures down to 630°C and a discontinuity in the Arrhenius plot was observed at -700°C. The high D-values at lower temperatures were attributed to the effect of grain boundary diffusion. The present experiments were undertaken to investigate this anomaly and study the low temperature region of the diffusion of copper in silver. The method employed single crystal samples and a plated source of copper. Silver single crystals 2½ by 4 in. sq were grown from zone-refined silver bar (>99.99 pct Ag) by the Bridgeman technique, and $ in. thick slices were cut by spark machining. The specimens were electro-polished, and a 2 µm layer of copper was electroplated on to the planar surface at one end of each specimen using a potentiostatic voltage source. The following solution was used for plating: CuSO4 . 5H2O 125 gm H2SO4 (S.G. 1.8) 53 ml H2O 1000 ml The diffusion couples were sealed in capsules, in an argon atmosphere, and were annealed at either 701, 597, or 498°C. The temperature measurements were made to an accuracy of *l°C After the anneal, the penetration of copper into the silver was determined using an electron probe micro-analyzer. 100 sec scaler measurements of the intensity of Cu Ka! X-radiation were performed at 2 to 5 µm intervals along a line normal to the source, with a beam potential of 25 kv. Allowances were made for the background radiation, and the dead-time of the counting system in the normal way, and the intensity ratios were corrected to weight concentration by the method of Duncumb & de-Casa.3 For the analysis of the diffusion profiles, it was first observed that the copper layer did not completely dissolve in the host crystal for the specimens annealed at 498 and 591 whereas for the specimen annealed at 701°C, a single phase solid solution was formed. "Cycled fluidized bed ash (CFBA), a significant portion of fly ash produced from coal-fired power plants and rejected from the ash classifying process, has remained unused due to its high free CaO and S03 content. It is necessary to extend research on the method to reduce the expansion and improve the compressive strength by some effective chemical activator. This paper presents experimental results on the expansion by Le chaterlier tester and the compressive strength. Hydraulic ash-zeolite (HAZ) cementitious material was blended as the chemical activator to study the effects of the activator on the expansion and the compressive strength. The results show that HAZ can not only reduce the expansion, but also increase the prisms compressive strength. Scanning electron microscope observation and X-ray diffraction analysis indicate that the main hydrated products of the sample are calcium hydroxide, ettringite, zeolite and calcite, which can explain the results of the expansion and the strength tests.IntroductionNearly 80% of the electricity in China is produced by coal-fired plants, which results in the production of a large quantity of coal combustion residues, among which coal fly ash is the major component. Because of that the air-pollution becomes heavier as time going on. Cycle-fluidized-bed-combustion systems are retrofitted to meet air-emission standards mandated by China Clean Air Act. Cycle fluidized bed ash (CFBA) will present new challenges for coal-combustion byproduct management. The use of cycle-fluidized-bed ash as a cement replacement in concrete is the most attractive one because of its high volume utilization and widespread construction. However, the replacement of cement with cycle fluidized bed ash in Portland cement concrete usually increases the expansion and decreases the early strength of concrete. In many research of this field, most of them were focus on the activation of pozzolanic activity of CFBA and to make all kinds of blend cement. A number of studies had been carried out on the activation of CFBA using chemical activators. These studies involved using different activating methods including alkali activation and sulfate activation 11, 2]. The former involved the breaking down of the glass phases in an elevated alkaline environment to accelerate the reaction [3, 4]. The later is based on the ability of sulfates to react with aluminum oxide in the glass phase of CFBA to produce ettringite that contributes to the strength at early ages [5-7]. With respect to sulfate activation, the use of gypsum and sodium sulfate had been well studied [5-8]. HAZ is one of HAS sub-products which is a patentd chemical activator made by Wuhan University (ZL98113594.3). It had been used to activate CFBA to produce blend cement in many Chinese engineering projects and time has told us that it is a good activator."

"Increased use of scrap in steelmaking including scrap use in BOF has a high economic and environmental potential in terms of increased productivity, energy saving and reduced emission of CO2. Preheating and surface cleaning of steel scrap is a concept developed by MEFOS in a four year research program funded by MISTRA, Swedish Foundation of Strategic Environmental Research. The process concept consists of four major steps: 1) Combustion of ASR or other waste fuel and composing of the gas composition. 2) Scrap heating and cleaning in a shaft where the coated zinc is removed as ZnCl2 and scrap is heated to about 600 ºC. 3) Dust separation for recovery of metal zinc. 4) Gas cleaning. This paper will describe the process concept and highlight the major results from preliminary trials around the scrap heating and cleaning shaft.IntroductionSteel is often coated to increase the corrosion resistance. Share of coated and galvanized steel in the world marked is steadily increasing. This results in increased amounts of scrap with different types of coatings. Use of galvanized scrap in EAF plant results in an EAF dust with high content of zinc ferrite and many other impurities like Pb, Hg, Cd and halide. EAF dust is classified as hazardous waste in most of the developed countries and the steel plant has to pay for external treatment for zinc recovery. For use in BOF plant this will result in a BOF dust containing typically 1-5%Zn making it impossible for recycling to the blast furnace.Different approaches for surface cleaning have been investigated in past. Dapper et al. [1] examined the possibility to evaporate Zn, Ni, Cr, Sn from coated materials using chlorine. Chlorinated rinsing of non iron oxides and metals using HCl from combustion of PVC was discussed by Fray [2]. Further studies by Tee and Fray [3-5] have been concentrated on the possibility to vaporize coatings with an air and chlorine gas mixture. The O2:Cl2 ratio in the gas mixture was found to have great importance for control of the process. To avoid the chlorination of iron, this ratio should be kept at a level of 10:1.Scrap pre-heating up to about 600 ºC is a well known method and this alone could save up to 100 kWh per ton steel. The technology has been established since many years and efficient processes were developed in the 90’s. However, no process has fully gained the expected energy savings as the large quantity of the exhaust gas has to be reheated to over 1000 ºC again to destroy the hazardous components like dioxins."

The procedure for operation of deluge systems installed in road tunnels is still a subject of debate. The work undertaken in this paper assists in the understanding of the effects of deluge in road tunnels, and thus aims to help inform the development of operational policy. Analysis was undertaken using computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulations to help explore the deluge interaction with the tunnel ventilation (including smoke exhaust) and combustion products. It was found, for the scenarios considered, that: Deluge activation can decrease the required critical velocity for smoke backlayering, and this in turn can improve the effectiveness of a smoke exhaust system.The dominant parameter for deluge effectiveness is the vehicle configuration, with shielded scenarios (such as a fire in the passenger compartment) showing almost no water reaching the fire. The water delivery rate (5 mm/min versus 10 mm/min) has only a minor effect on the smoke duct damper inlet temperatures and downstream smoke temperatures for small fires (5 MW). For large fires (50 MW) the higher water delivery rate gives slightly improved performance (lower damper inlet temperatures and lower downstream smoke temperatures). A one-dimensional transient tunnel model incorporating different operational and deluge response policies (ie deluge activation times) was developed. It was used to examine the influence of different operational parameters on life safety risk and tunnel damage risk. It was found, for the scenarios considered, that: The life safety risk for different scenarios has a sensitivity to deluge activation policy with the case of delaying the deluge activation for a long time giving the worst outcomes. However, the most critical parameters for life safety risk are operator response time (for all response activities, not just deluge) and the type of fire (configuration, size and growth rate).There is a reduction in risk of tunnel damage when the deluge is activated earlier, although the fire configuration (ie whether or not the seat of the fire can be reached) has the greatest influence on the outcome. It is concluded that the deluge activation policy should be case-dependent. It will depend on the tunnel, the safety systems provided, and most particularly the vehicles involved. The current policy in Australian tunnels is for manual activation of the deluge by the tunnel operator as soon as practical after the fire is confirmed (see also PIARC, 2007). This is a good policy. However, future work may be helpful to improve the skills of operators to make the best judgement as to when deluge should be activated, balancing all risks. This work could include research to further the understanding of deluge and fire in road tunnels, training programs and consideration of historical fire events.

FMC Corporation has achieved a significant cost reduction through a new proprietary solution mining and processing technology at its Green River, Wyoming Soda Ash Facility. In the first phase, completed in October 1995, trona ore is dissolved, recovered and processed with the new technology, and then fed into an existing refining plant, replacing dry mined and calcined trona ore. The second phase, completed in April 1996, produced a fmal high purity product and increased capacity by 635,000 t/a (700,000 tpy). Both phases were completed under budget and well ahead of schedule.

In this paper the utilisation of building information models (BIM) and construction automation on building sites is discussed. A lot of research has been carried out to develop new applications for using BIM to assist construction site planning, different operations and logistics. The methods of production control and management on site utilize BIM together with machine control and navigation systems. In Finland machine control systems and the automation of construction equipment is widely used in infrastructure construction. Recently similar methods have been introduced also in building construction. This paper describes some latest Finnish examples where BIM-software is used for the planning, execution and control of building construction operations. University of Oulu has studied methods and technologies to capitalize BIM-models. The research has been mainly in infrastructure construction but the activities have recently been extended to building construction. In this paper a BIM-based tower crane operation and control system is discussed as a case study. The aim of this study was to highlight the potential areas were automation can increase the crane productivity and improve site operations and logistics. The construction site managers and tower crane operators interviewed in this study were experienced in using BIM-models on site.

In .December of 1987, International Mill Service, Inc. signed an exclusive licensing agreement with Tetronics Research & Development Co. Limited of Faringdon, Oxfordshire., England to commercialize plasma technology which had been demonstrated in an EAF dust processing application. The intent of the process is to reduce and volatize the zinc, lead and cadmium oxides inherent in EAF dust and collect these elements as metals in an ISP (Imperial Smelting Process) zinc splash condenser, and to render the resultant slag an inert, non-hazardous material. With these objectives in mind, IMS started commissioning facilities in 1989 at Florida Steel in Jackson, Tennessee and Nucor-Yamato Steel in Armorel, Arkansas. This paper will address the commercial development and progress of the technology at these two installations. Process Description In the EAF steelmaking process typically the off gas stream is cleaned by some form of baghouse. The particulate collected is known as Electric Arc Furnace dust and has been designated by the U.S. EPA as hazardous waste number K061, once it leaves the collection system. This designation was given to the material due to the high toxic concentrations of lead and cadmium (nickel and chromium for stainless EAF dusts) inherent in the dust. IMS' method of operation is to locate the facilities on the client mill's property adjacent to the baghouse. The dust is transported directly to IMS via a closed conveyance system. This method enables the technology to be an additional processing step in the steelmaking process. Once the dust has been transported to the IMS facility, it is fed, metered and mixed mechanically in the feed conveyance system with a carbon reductant (typically coke breeze). The carbon reductant is approximately 10% of the dust feed rate. This mixture passes through the feed system and enters the furnace

This paper stems from recent multidisciplinary research between mining engineering and health researchers at the University of British Columbia and the University of Victoria, Canada. It considers the implications of a future state of sustainable mining development that places more emphasis on consideration of mine community health and sustainability within the definition of mine planning best practice. It reviews recently completed research studies on mining and other resource communities in British Columbia, Canada and a process undertaken by the research team to share research findings. It then examines the outcomes of this knowledge sharing process placing emphasis on the development of a more collaborative and enhanced mine planning process that integrates community- level indicators of health and sustainability to more effectively address mine impact-benefits. The paper concludes by discussing current initiatives that aim to benefit the mining industry, communities, and governments as they plan future mineral development projects.

A technique is presented by which well samples and core plugs of dolomite formations are classified by microscopic examination into seven different porosity grades. Quantitative values of porosity and permeability are determined for each grade by a statistical correlation of the core plug test data with the porosity grading system. These quantitative values are applied directly to the grades exhibited in the well samples for the purpose of estimating the reservoir void space for wells that were not cored. The procedure is described for estimating the gas reserves per unit area lor the South Hugoton gas field. but a reserve estimate for the field is not given. INTRODUCTION The miscroscopic examination of well sample; and the graphic recording of their lithologic qualities and other distinguishing characteristics of various geologic formations drilled is both a science and an art of long standing and wide application. Usually the primary objective of a geologist who "sits on the well" and examines the samples are: to identify the formation being drilled, determine the total depth, casing point. and completion interval. In most cases the porosity is described. if done at all, in general terms. such as: trace, scattered, fine, poor, fair, medium. good, excellent, or in some other relative terms. In fields where various geologists have examined samples and recorded observations on many wells considerable variations in lithologic terms and porosity descriptions occur unless there is primary effort to establish uniformity of logging observations and standards of recording observable porosity. When an estimate of the pore volume of a reservoir is made a geologic concept of the processes that control the magnitudes of porosity and permeability is developed by microscopic examination of well samples. The characeristics and appearances are then mentally related to rather general quantitative units of porosity based on physical core data from the same reservoir or on such data or experience in other reservoirs that have similar qualities. The reliability of such estimates depends largely on the variations of the lithology of the formations, the geometric properties of its void system. the extent of comparisons of sample appearances with porosity data, as well as the uniform recording of all relevant characteristics. This statement is particularly significant for dolo-mitized limestone formations of substantial thicknesses and heterogeneity such as the Permian Dolomites of the Hugoton gas field. Jn this field, as well as in most of the Permian Dolomite fields, the producing formations are of relatively great thicknesses in which the porosity and permeability of the reservoir varies substantially in all directions, depending on the crystalline structure. degree and kind of impurities, kind of fossils anti cementation thereof, degree of dissolution. and fracturing. The variations of the lithologic texture of the dolomites and post deposition alterations have resulted in porosities and permeabilities of such magnitudes that only a part of the gross thickness can be counted as "pay." At the time of this study insufficient gas production had been experienced to apply the pressure decline production method in the South Hugoton Field and the electric logs are not definitive enough. The problem of estimating gas reserves in the south part of the Hugoton Field is primarily one of determining the pay thickness and porosity from well samples and core data. The area studied embraced all that part of the field lying south of an east-west line through Guvmon, Okla., anti containing approximately 1.000,000 acres. This paper describes a technique of correlation of physical core data with well samples so that quantitative values of pay thickness, porosity. Permeability, and connate water may be assigned to well samples that are representative of a given interval, and thereby permitting the estimation of gas reserves lor a given unit area. The procedure was developed by a uniform microscopic qualitative porosity grading of the dolo. mite core plugs.. and relating these grades to the respective physical core data on a statistical basis The well sample-were also graded in a Similar manner in order that the quantitative values established lor the core plugs could be applied to the well Sample for wells that were not cored. GRADING OF DOLOMITE A group of experienced geologists was given the assignment of examining the samples on all wells in South Hugoton in order that they could log their observations in a uniform and standardized manner and grade the observed porosity so that it could be related quantitatively to the core data. The group initiated the study 011 chips from cores which bad been tested for porosity and permeability. This study continued until all of the geologists developed a common knowledge of lithologic terms and of the characteristic appearances of the samples and their relations to measured porosity. The characteristic appearances of the dolomite samples under twelve-power magnification as related to their qualitative porosities afforded a classification of the dolomite into :even grades of porosity, ranging from dolomite of no-visible porosity under twelve-power magnification to dolomite of excellent porosity. The assigned grade for a specific 10-ft interval is a weighted average of all visible grades of porosity exhibited by the cuttings representing that interval. The porosity characteristics were recorded by a color graph adjacent to the lithology column in conjunction with a numerical system for further definition of relative porosity as shown in Fig. 1. The three vertical lines to the right of the lithology column each represent 33 1/3 per cent. which lines were used to record the percentage of the samples, for any particular interval. that showed porosity under the microscope. The colors were used to denote actual pore size. i.e., orange. blue and I-ed for pore diameter of one-fourth or less. one-fourth to one-Ilalf. and greater than one-half millimeter, respectively. "An innovative concept is proposed whereby the operating power for haul trucks in certain areas of an underground mine are reduced in order to lower ventilation costs. Airflow that must be provided for diesel-powered equipment in most jurisdictions are regulated based on engine peak power capability and engine emissions, both of which can be lowered by artificially reducing the capacity of the engine through the engine control unit. Advances in asset tracking and ventilation on demand enable this methodology and this study demonstrates that it could represent significant value for mine operators. An examination of haul truck duty cycle indicates that de-rating of engine operating power based on the truck’s location in the mine can enable a step change in ventilation rates, often with no material impact on working conditions. Methods for implementation and estimate of cost savings will be defined.INTRODUCTION Ventilation of underground workings remains a significant operating cost burden for modern mine operators. In particular, ventilation rates for underground diesel mining equipment are often defined by local regulatory bodies and are assumed to present minimal opportunity for optimization or savings, at least until battery propulsion systems can be adopted. Commonly, the quantity of air flow required is defined by the peak rated engine output power of diesel equipment. For example, Ontario Regulation 854 SS 183.1 (3) states that “The flow of air must be at least 0.06 cubic metres per second for each kilowatt of power of the diesel-powered equipment operating in the workplace”. Jurisdictions that define air flow using the prescribed CANMET or MSHA ratings use peak engine emissions to calculate air flow required for dilution ventilation. These approaches are similar in that the maximum power capability of a vehicle’s engine is used to define the ventilation rate in all areas where it travels, regardless of what power output is actually used in any of those areas. Examination of the duty cycle of a typical underground haul truck identifies a large variance in the power output of the vehicle depending on its location in the mine and the activities undertaken at these locations. For example, travel on a mining sub-level requires a fraction of the truck’s peak power due to the minimal grade and significantly reduced travel speed. So if we can reliably reduce the peak engine power capacity and engine emissions in areas where peak power is not required, we can logically cut the ventilation rates for those areas."

The high lithium demand forecasted for some high tech applications and batteries for electric and hybrid-electric vehicles, in particular, has sparked increased exploration for lithium, particularly for lithium- and potassium-bearing brine deposits. The latter have generally followed the Canadian Institute of Mining, Metallurgy and Petroleum (CIM) NI 43-101 guidelines on resource reporting, formulated for hard rock deposits (metals and industrial minerals). While a number of the requirements can be appropriately applied to brines, brines are fluids and require a specific analysis leading to a distinct set of reporting requirements. Brines cannot be considered industrial minerals because the various elements occur as ions in a dynamic fluid, rather than being chemically bonded in a solid. Although chemicals are produced from brines, brines have no relation to industrial mineral deposits. This article analyzes the recently released (Nov. 1, 2012) document CIM Best Practice Guidelines for Resource and Reserve Estimation for Lithium Brines, in light of the practical knowledge available from existing brine operations. It recommends modifications to the guidelines, which, if applied in their present format, will result in overstating resources and reserves and mislead potential investors. The CIM Best Practice Guidelines for Resource and Reserve Estimation for Lithium Brines document is generally descriptive and does not fully address the methodology for brine resource or reserve definition. Lithium and other elements (potassium, magnesium) are contained in a fluid, the hydrologic characterization of which should be the principal focus of a brine exploration program. The fundamental requirement in defining lithium brine resources and reserves in a salar is the identification and definition of those formations ? the aquifers ? that will yield brine in a usable quantity to a well, because brines can only be extracted by pumping wells. Fine-grained sediments will never, as required in the summary Table 1, have ?reasonable prospects of economic extraction,? cannot be considered and, therefore, need not be tested. However, the guidelines recommend the collection of solid samples and a high-core recovery for laboratory testing of various sediments instead of focusing on the brine.

"When the Deep Foundations Institute (DFI) was founded, quality assurance and quality control (QA/QC) of foundation construction was rudimentary. Nondestructive testing (NDT) was a nascent technology, known to very few people, and very limited in its capabilities and applications. In the four decades since the DFI became a reality, NDT researchers and practitioners have taken advantage of technological advances to improve those existing testing and analysis techniques, and to create new ones that have all contributed to the engineering body of knowledge. This has enabled contractors to improve the quality and reliability of their products, and engineers to design more efficient foundations.Through its regular series of seminars, publications and annual meetings, the DFI has been vitally important in educating the deep foundations industry about the capabilities and benefits of NDT methods. In turn, NDT results have helped the industry identify problems in deep foundation construction, determine the causes of those problems, and improve design constructability and construction practices to increase the quality, reliability and efficiency of all types of deep foundations. This presentation reviews the evolution of several important NDT methods, and the contributions that they have made to foundation quality.THE BEGINNINGSThe Deep Foundations Institute (DFI) was incorporated in 1976 in the State of New Jersey as a 501(c)(6) non-profit association. The DFI is a consensus organization of Contractors, Engineers, Owners and Suppliers involved with the design and construction of all types of deep foundations. The purpose of the DFI was and still is to improve the planning, design and construction of deep foundations by educating all those involved, sharing best practices, and promoting the adoption of new technologies that improve quality, productivity or safety.This is well expressed in the current DFI Mission Statement: To bring together multi-disciplined individuals and organizations to find common ground and create a shared vision and a consensus voice for continual advancement in the deep foundations industry.At the time the DFI was born, nondestructive testing for verifying the quality and integrity of deep foundations was in its infancy, its growth constrained by the technology, or lack thereof. Some visionary engineers of the time understood the physics of the potential methods, and therefore the possible capabilities, but were frustrated by the lack of technology to work with. Electronic equipment was mostly analog, and the few digital data acquisition systems that were available had such slow sampling rates that they were incapable of recording rapid event sequences or short duration events such as those used in modern integrity tests. For example, Jean Paquet, a leading research engineer at the French National Construction Institute, (Centre Experimentale de Recherche et d’Etudes du Batiment et des Travaux Publics, or CEBTP) patented the frequency-based analysis procedure for the Transient Dynamic Response (TDR) method, aka Sonic Mobility or Impulse Response, in 1974, but it was not until 1977 that analog data acquisition systems became fast enough to turn his theory into a reality."

"HYDROGEOCHEMICAL METHODS in the Canadian Shield can be based on analyses of the following :(1) spring waters and their precipitates;(2) stream and river waters;(3) lake and muskeg waters;( 4) ground waters from drill holes, wells, faults, etc.;(5) waters issuing from diamond drill holes, faults, shear zones, etc. into mine workings and open pits; also analyses of precipitates associated With these waters.The first four can be utilized in both reconnaissance and detailed surveys. The last is suitable only for detailed work.For hydrogeochemical methods of prospecting to be effective, the following conditions must be present. 1. Natural waters must come into contact with mineral deposits and remain in contact with them long enough for the solution of detectible amounts of ore, gangue or indicator elements. 2. Dispersion patterns must be present in the hydrologic systems in order to trace the elements back to their source. These patterns may take the form of trains (e.g., increasing amounts of elements upstream toward t he source (s), Figure 1 ) or halos (e.g., increasing amounts of elements in bodies of water toward the source (s), F igures 2 and 3)."

The differences in starch demands that occur between ore types subjected to the anionic flotation of calcium-activated gangue and the range of residual starch contents expected to give the best metallurgical response were evaluated on a batch and pilot plant basis. A phenol-sulfuric acid procedure was used to determine the residual starch contents in the iron ore slurries. Three pilot plant campaigns on samples from a group of orebodies located on the Marquette Range, Michigan, showed that in the rougher flotation pulp, a residual carbohydrate range of 25 to 100 ppm, which is equivalent to a 0.5 lb/short ton spread, yielded optimum results. Concentrates assaying at least 65 percent Fe and less than 6.0 percent Si02 and containing more than 80 per-cent of the recoverable iron were obtained. Both batch and continuous research indicated that starch adsorption is calcium modulated and relatively unaffected by the fatty acid additions employed. Residual starch level is not a critical control factor, but the addition must be adjusted to about 25 to 50 ppm residual starch and kept in this range for most effective utilization of the added tapioca flour.

A process is being developed by the Bureau of Mines to selectively recover nickel and cobalt from low-grade domestic laterites. In laboratory evaluation of the process, the oxides in the laterite were selectively reduced with carbon monoxide at temperatures from 350° to 600° C. For material containing more than about 5 percent magnesia, pyrite additions or post-reduction heat treatments were necessary to achieve satisfactory nickel and cobalt extraction for this range of reduction temperatures. Multistage leaching of the reduced material at ambient temperature and pressure in the presence of oxygen, ammonium sulfate, and ammonium hydroxide extracted up to about 90 and 85 percent of the contained nickel and cobalt, respectively. The nickel was selectively recovered from the leach solution by solvent extraction and was then stripped from the loaded organic with dilute sulfuric acid to provide a nickel-rich electrolyte. Treatment of the raffinate with hydrogen sulfide resulted in the recovery of cobalt as a sulfide. The only contaminant in solution was magnesium which was removed by ion exchange or precipitation. In this process the energy requirements are relatively low and except for minor operation losses, only coke and oxygen are consumed.

Preventing pillar squeezes, massive pillar collapses, and bumps is critical to the safe and efficient recovery of coal during room-and-pillar retreat mining. To help prevent these problems, the U.S. Bureau of Mines (USBM) has developed the Analysis of Retreat Mining Pillar Stability (ARMPS) computer program. ARMPS calculates stability factors (SF) based on estimates of the loads applied to and the load-bearing capacities of, pillars during retreat mining operations. The program can model the significant features of most retreat mining layouts, including angled crosscuts, varied spacings between entries, barrier pillars between the active section and old (side) gobs, and slab cuts in the barriers on retreat. It also features a pillar strength formula that considers the greater strength of rectangular pillars. The program may be used to evaluate bleeder designs as well as active workings. A data base of 110 pillar retreat mining case histories has been collected across the United States to verify the program. It was found that satisfactory conditions were very rare when the ARMPS SF was less than 0.75. Conversely, very few unsatisfactory designs were found where the ARMPS SF was greater than 1. 5.

"An investigation into the problem of atmospheric fog in Canadian mines is described. Fog occurs in several mines and the reduced visibility can result in the closure of workings for safety reasons. Information on the mechanisms of fog formation are discussed and the methods for improving conditions are reviewed with their relative costs.INTRODUCTIONAtmospheric fog occurs in several Canadian mines during spring and summer. The fog which reduces visibility, contributes to loss of production and increased accident risk . Closure of ramps in mechanized mines causes mining to be stopped or rescheduled, and stoping and grade control may be affected . Increased corrosion of equipment may result from acidic fog .Fog is commonly caused by saturated air being compressed and heated by an inlet fan and then being circulated in an ascensional system with heat transfer to the walls of wet airways. This causes supersaturation and water droplets condense to create fog, with liquid water contents of 0.5 g/kg to 3 g/kg of air. These concentrations reduce visibility to less than 10m and prevent mining. Less severe fog is usually tolerated as a nuisance, about which little can be done."

The fracture behavior of second phase particles and the role of matrix material on the wear resistances of the three Al-Si alloys containing 8, 17, and 19% Si were investigated using single pass scratch testing technique by applying normal loads between 0,15 and 5,00 N, in ambient air, Optical microscopy and SEM with EDS were used to analyze microstructures and morphologies of scratch tracks of the Al-Si alloys, The results showed that needle-like Si particles fractured under a load of 0.50 N, while block-like Si particles fractured at loads above 3,00 N, The Al-17% Si alloy with large number of needle-like particles (area fraction 16,4%) exhibited the highest coefficient of friction (0,8) and the widest scratch track, The Al-19%Si alloy containing high Si percentage and larger number of block-like particles (area fraction 16%) exhibited the lowest coefficient of friction (0,37) and the narrowest scratch track width. Presence of block-like particles was effective in reducing the amount of material transfer from Al-Si alloy surfaces to the counterface.
