Reverse circulation (R.C.) drilling or the dual tube method as it is quite commonly known, has a unique place in conventional mineral drilling. It can be classified half-way between open hole drilling at the lower end of the scale and diamond drilling at the upper end. The system basically consists of two tubes, one inside the other, with compressed air flowing between the inner and outer tubes. Sample cuttings return up the inner tube through the head of the rig and via a hose to a cyclone where the sample is collected. This system means that the cuttings are free of contamination as they are at no time in contact with the outside formation of the hole.Reverse circulation drilling is divided into two areas: R.C. Roller and Blade for softer formations; and R.C. Percussion for harder formations.

A considerable saving in time and money has been effected by use of a specially designed stainless steel container for laboratory drilling mud test work. This container involves use of a standard tall-form stainless steel beaker for service in which the mud sample is heated to an elevated temperature and maintained there for protracted periods of time, while undergoing agitation to facilitate mixing of mud components. Agitation is accomplished by rotating the filled containers on motor-driven rollers within an oven. Several porcelain balls are generally placed in the containers to further improve agitation. Soft glass containers (.Mason jars) were used in this service in early work, and were found to be unsuitable for the following reasons: 1. Poor resistance to thermal shock. 2. Containers could withstand only relatively low pressures. 3. Accidental breakage in handling. 4. Chemical deterioration and subsequent mud contamination from reaction of high pH muds with the glass at elevated temperatures. Pyrex containers were also considered, but, inasmuch as they provided improvement only in items 1 and 4 listed above the additional cost was not believed to be justified. Infrared materials are a special kind of material widely used in military, biological engineering and chemical industry. However, the problems associated with them such as unstable properties, high cost and a high thermal expansion coefficient seriously restrict the development and the wide application of the traditional infrared materials with the SiC or ZrSiO4 matrix. The ultrafine quartz powder is normally used to prepare the infrared materials by hot-pressing technology. The aim of the paper is to investigate the thermal expansivity, the effect of the SiO2 size and the addition of AI2O) or Fe2O3 on the infrared emissivity of the quartz matrix of the infrared material (QMIM) in a 8-25um wavelength range. The results indicate that 89% of infrared emissivity and 0.4x 10.5°C of thermal expansion coefficient of QMIM can be obtained. The affeeting mechanism of Al2O) and Fe2O3 on the infrared emissivity of QMIM were also discussed.

Provide the U.S. mining industry with a user friendly computer program to calculate stresses in underground coal mines in order to improve safety conditions for mine workers. Capabilities of MULSIM/NL MULSIM/NL (multiple seams, nonlinear) is a three-dimensional boundary-element method (BEM) program developed at the U.S. Bureau of Mines for stress and displacement analysis of coal mines. It can analyze one or two parallel seams that can have any orientation with respect to the Earth's surface. Three main new features distinguish MULSIM/NL from its predecessors: (1) non¬linear material models, (2) multiple mining steps, and (3) energy release and strain energy computations. MULSIM/NL has six material models for the in-seam material: (1) linear elastic for coal, (2) strain softening, (3) elastic plastic, (4) bilinear hardening, (5) strain hardening, and (6) linear elastic for gob. The multiple mining step capability enables the user to efficiently simulate a changing mine geometry. Finally, MULSIM/ NL computes energy release rate due to mining using the most recent concepts advanced by Salamon.

The ratio of neutralization potential (NP) to acid production (AP) ratio is often employed for predicting acidic discharges from waste rock dumps. The available NP was evaluated in laboratory studies of limestone dissolution in simulated acidic mine water. The available neutralization potential strongly depended on the particle size. Using limestone particles of 114" (6.4 mm) or greater, less than 20% of the total neutralization potential was exhausted at the onset of acid conditions. Apparently, the dissolution of limestone became mass transfer limited. Under mass transfer limitations, the rate of pyrite oxidation may exceed the rate of neutralization by buffering minerals. The implications concerning the controls on limestone dissolution were examined using a geochemical predictive model for sulphide mineral oxidation in waste rock. The results have shown that in case of heterogeneous waste rock piles the NP/AP ratio is a reliable indicator for short-tam predictions only. Kinetic data on the depletion rate of the neutralizing minerals and geochemical modelling suggest that waste rock environments with NP/AP ratios as high as 5.0 may turn acidic in the long term.

Electrical tomography has developed rapidly over the last few years in its sophistication and practical use to enable three-dimensional information on the distribution of phases within flowing mixtures to be observed1. This paper reviews the current state of application from the industrial perspective, drawing on applications case studies based on scaling studies in the laboratory right through to installations on plant. In the laboratory, applications have looked at scale-up of mixing2 processes involving gas-liquid and solid-liquid suspensions3 with a particular interest in verifying computational fluid dynamics simulations or in checking scale-up design4,5. In the processing plant, the circumstances are usually bespoke and may range from simple detection of the degree of homogeneity of a flowing mixture through to the need to measurement a sophisticated batch process such as crystallization, sedimentation, filtering and drying. Examples drawn from the chemical and pharmaceutical industries will be presented and related to the benefits that can be gained through application of the method.

The steady growth of the Northwest portion of the United States over the past two decades, and the very rapid development of Northern California, Western Nevada, and Oregon in particular, led the Calaveras Cement Company people to Shasta County, California in 1957. The presence of a large deposit of high calcium carbonate limestone had been recognized for many years, but it required the momentum of an expanding economy to make these long known reserves valuable. This, plus the availability of a reliable supply of fuel in the form of natural gas, and the ready means of shipping the product to the consumer both by highway and railroad, seemed to offer the proper combination to launch a successful venture. The Calaveras Cement Company had been manufacturing cement by the wet process since 1925 at their plant at San Andreas, California. Starting with two small kilns, the plant in Calaveras County started an expansion program in 1945 that ultimately resulted in the plant as it exists today, consisting of five kilns with a combined production of 4.5 million barrels annually.

In 1942, Illinois produced 106,590,000 bbl. of crude oil, or 7.6 per cent of the entire amount produced in the United States. It ranked fifth among the oil- producing states. The production for 1942 declined 20.5 per cent from the previous year's total of 134,139,000 bbl. Tie daily average production for 1942 was approximately 292,000 bbl., or 74,000 bbl; less than the 366,000 daily average for 1941. At the beginning of 1942 the daily production was 367,000 bbl. This production declined steadily to 282,000 for June and to 246,000 for December. This steady decline was caused partly by the reduction in drilling resulting from Federal Conservation Order M-68 and partly by the fact that no major pool was found during the year. Discoveries Forty new fields (Fig. 2, Table 2), 48 extensions (Table 3), and 45 additional producing zones in existing fields (Table 4) Were discovered in 23 counties in Illinois during 1942. AN unexpected and unprecedented demand for its products now challenges the petroleum industry. Between 1939 wand 1946, domestic oil demand increased nearly 45 per cent and in the first half of 1947 it was 10 per cent higher than in 1946. In 1939 the United States produced 1,264,962. 000 bbl of crude oil and indications are that about 1,860,000,000 bbl will be produced in 1947, a 47 per cent increase. Runs to stills are more than keeping pace with production. The crude capacity of 365 operating refineries is rated as 5,400.000 bbl daily and almost 100 per cent of this capacity was running crude oil in August 1947. The oil industry is cognizant of our need for a greater volume of petroleum products and is expending the huge stun of four billion dollars on exploration. production. transportation, refining. and marketing of petroleum. Of this amount about half will be spent on exploration and production. a billion on refining. and another billion on transportation and marketing facilities.

Sifto Salt Div. of Domtar Chemicals Ltd. has developed a new method for installing roof bolts in the high backs of its 1-million-tpy rock-salt mine at Goderich, Ontario, on the east shore of Lake Huron. The method teams a telescoping- boom hydraulic crane with a specially developed combination auger-drill and bolt-tightening ma- chine. One man, controlling all operations from a basket supported at the end of the crane's telescoping boom, installs an average of 100 5-ft roof bolts per shift, at heights to 45 ft. The mine has very long backs that are not as stable as might be expected. The result has been that roof scaling has occupied an unusually high percentage of the underground work force. About six years ago, company officials decided to go to 100% roof bolting of all backs as a safety measure. The present roof-bolting equipment is the result of a development program instituted at that time to find a faster and more economical method for doing the job.

A large body of work exists discussing the impact of grinding media on mineral flotation. Generally, the work indicates that a change to a less electrochemically active grinding environment has positive benefits on downstream processing. There is a fear, however, that these benefits may not be realized when treating low sulphide containing ores, typified by UG2 style deposits. A series of experiments was developed to test the flotation response of UG2 ores using the Magotteaux Mill® to determine if measurable differences in the pulp chemistry could be discerned using a range of grinding media types. Further, the flotation responses of the contained sulphides (chalcopyrite, pentlandite and pyrrhotite) were determined. The data collected provided strong evidence that the grinding environment can significantly influence the pulp chemistry and flotation characteristics of all sulphide minerals, even when the ore contains less than 0.5 per cent total sulphide. The results show that the change to an inert media type produced a substantial improvement in the flotation rate of all sulphide minerals, as well as the PGMs.

One phase of the Bureau of Minest work in the field of health and safety is the promotion of safe, satisfactory, and reliable respir atory protective devices. To insure that such devices will be available, the Bureau has established schedules of what it considers the minimum re- quirements for oxygen breathing-apparatus,3 gas masks, hose masks,5/ and mechanical filter-respirators (a schedule of requirements for hose- type supplied-air respirators is being prepared). Approval of oxygen breathing-apparatus is given by the Safety Division; approval of other types of respiratory equipment is given by the Health Division, both divisions being in the Health and Safety Branch, Manufacturers of respiratory protective devices may submit their equipment to the Bureau for approval under the requirements of these schedules. A refractory U–Mo associated ore containing jordisite which enclose U, Mo component, and impede penetration, diffusion process of leaching, oxidation agent was investigated through three approaches of focusing on U, Mo extraction. The results indicate flotation beneficiation without followed metallurgical process is not appropriate because of high target metals loss rate via water leaching. H2SO4, H2O2 dosage recommended to oxidation leaching are 10 and 6–8% of ore mass, and U, Mo leaching rate are 92.71 and 52.16% respectively. For the acid pressure leaching, U, Mo leaching rate 93.75 and 76.07% are achieved under optimal temperature 130–140 °C and H2O2 dosage 8% combined with pressure air 0.6 MPa. Fluidized bed furnace roasting parameters include air flow rate 0.64 m/s, air ore ratio 0.3 m 3/kg at roasting temperature 550 °C with U, Mo leaching rate 93.2 and 89.5%, so enhanced metallurgical process effectively destroy wrapper and increase metal recovery rate.

The hydrodesulfurization characteristics of a Venezuelan topped crude oil and a Venezuelan reduced crude oil were determined at temperatures from 740° to 850° F, pressures from 800 to 1,600 psig, and space velocities from 1.0 to 2.0 Vo/Vc/hr. Kinetic calculations showed that under these conditions the desulfurization reaction was first order with respect to sulfur and had an average activation energy of 32.5 kcal/mo1. Catalyst life tests made at 750° F, with pressures of 800, 1,200, and 1,600 psig and space velocities of 1.0 and 1.25 Vo/Ve/hr, showed that the decrease in the relative activity of the catalyst was a logarithmic function of time or volume of oil processed and the amount of vanadium deposited on the catalyst. Comparative tests made with residual fuels prepared from a Wilmington, Calif., crude oil and a Wyoming asphaltic crude oil showed that catalyst life may be extended by processing fuel oil with a low metal content, but it may be shortened by the presence of large amounts of asphalt in the feed.

The authors through this paper intend to introduce the non-vibro technique of ground improvement by stone column, being used for the first time in India under the Western Dedicated freight Corridor in Mumbai area. New 2x25 KV double line dedicated freight corridor tracks, capable of carrying 32.5-ton axle load are proposed to be built on this stretch. Non-Vibro Displacement Stone Columns of 900 mm diameter were installed to improve the safe bearing capacity of the soft ground to take the loading of Dedicated Freight Corridor Railway embankment. Vertical footing load tests on single and three column groups were conducted to assess the improvement in the sub-surface condition after installation of stone columns. This paper describes load tests conducted on stone columns and analysis of the obtained results. The observed load settlement behaviour of the improved ground has also been presented. Behaviour of single and group of stone columns have been compared and criteria adopted for arriving at desired factor of safety based on the settlement observed, has also been discussed.

The McKinley Mine is located in the northwest New Mexico, in McKinley County, approximately 25 miles from Gallup. The mine is operated by The Pittsburg & Midway Coal Mining Co. (P&M), a wholly owned subsidiary of the Chevron Corporation. P&M is headquartered in Englewood, Colorado. Since the McKinley Mine began operations in 1962 a total of 83,391,000 metric tons of coal have been sold through 1990. The 1991 production was approximately 5.000.000 metric tons. The mine operations are contained on a 109.000 square kilometers lease area of which 44.000 square kilometers are on the Navajo Nation. The present customer base consists of four utilities and one industrial account, all of which are located in Arizona. The utility customers are the Arizona Public Service Co. Cholla Station at Joseph City, The Salt River Project. Coronado Generating Station near Joseph City, and The Tucson Electric Company, Irvington Generating Station in Tucson. The industrial customer is the Stone Container Corporation, Snowflake Paper Mill.
