A high resolution autoradiographic study of the diffusion of a nickel isotope (NP3) into copper in the temperature range of 650° to 925°C, with particular emphasis on grain boundary diffusion, has been made. The extent of grain boundary diffusion is a function of the grain boundary angle and the diffusion temperature. The ratios of the grain boundary diffusion coefficient to the lattice diffusion coefficient ranges from 104 to 105. The activation energy for grain boundary diffusion decreases with increasing grain boundary angle. STUDIES and reviews&apos;-8 of metallic diffusion have indicated that grain boundary diffusion is a common phenomenon but quantitative studies of the many variables involved are not numerous. The present work was concerned with determining the influence of the crystallographic orientation of the grain boundaries and the temperature on the extent of boundary diffusion of nickel into copper. The study involved essentially three steps: 1—the production of grain boundaries of known crystallographic orientation, 2—the determination of the extent of diffusion into the boundaries, and 3—the analysis of the resulting data in terms of the usual diffusion concepts. The grain boundaries investigated approximated the simple tilt variety having l° of freedom. They were produced by controlling the solidification from a melt of Cuprovac (a high purity vacuum-melted copper obtained from Vacuum Metals Corp.) of a pair of seed crystals so that the bicrystals of copper produced had a common <100> axis. By rotating one seed crystal relative to the other, a simple tilt boundary was produced. The angle of rotation between the two crystals is the grain boundary angle 8, or what is sometimes termed the misfit angle. In all, some 16 boundaries ranging from 2" to 72" in 5" to 10" steps were investigated. The crystallographic orientations were measured with the use of both X-ray and optical goniometric techniques. The <100> axes in the crystals were found to be parallel within 2" to 3" with the exception of one crystal (8 = 12") in which the axes were 6" from being parallel. All bicrystals showed evidences of sub-grain structures. Laue analyses showed that these subgrains differed in orientation up to a maximum of 2". Because of these variations, and some curvature in the boundaries, the grain boundary angles listed are actually average values and deviate from the 1 o of freedom boundaries. Historically, there has been little incentive to process copper-arsenic concentrates by leaching, rather than via established smelting operations. However, with ever tightening environmental emission standards and more arseniferous concentrates being produced, increasingly sophisticated and upgraded off- gas handling facilities are required in smelting operations, generating greater quantities of challenging metallurgical dust. In this context, oxidative pressure leaching offers distinct advantages. The current state of pressure leach technology delivers high extractions from copper concentrates, while producing an environmentally stable process residue, without atmospheric emissions of sulphur dioxide or arsenic. However, as was shown in an earlier study, copper extractions and environmental leach residue stability are impacted negatively by arsenic levels above 2.5 to 3.0 wt%. In further studies on pressure leaching of copper concentrates, Sherritt has developed process conditions that allow even highly arseniferous (> 7 wt% As) feed materials to be converted into environmentally stable residues, with excellent copper extractions. At the same time, pressure leach residues can be generated that are amenable to silver recovery via direct cyanidation, without pre-treatment by lime boiling or hot curing. The results of pilot plant test work are discussed. INTRODUCTION As the production of copper has expanded over the years, resource exploitation has extended beyond relatively clean, high grade and easily accessible ores, and copper sulphide concentrates increasingly come with higher levels of contaminants, such as As, Hg, Sb and Bi, and lower copper and sulphide sulphur concentrations. However, as concerns on the impact of the emission of such contaminants into the natural environment have mounted, import/export restrictions have made the trading of copper concentrate more difficult, and, in particular, the export of concentrates with greater than 0.5 wt% As; under ever tightening environmental emission standards, these lower quality concentrates can be a significant strain on the off-gas handling facilities in smelting operations. The processing of arsenic bearing copper concentrates is, therefore, an increasing challenge as copper producers seek to exploit more complex mineralization and to extend the life of their operations. In this environment, processing arsenical copper concentrates with high temperature pressure leaching (>200°C) must be considered as an alternative to pyrometallurgical processing. Leaching kinetics for copper minerals at these temperatures are rapid and acid is generated for potential use in heap leach operations. Pressure leaching of copper concentrates eliminates gaseous emissions of arsenic and sulphur, while generating environmentally stable residues, as measured by the Toxicity Characteristic Leach Procedure (TCLP) (Kalanchey et al., 2007). Both medium and high temperature pressure leaching of copper concentrates have also proven themselves technically on an industrial scale (Marsden et al., 2004) with high copper recoveries.

"Escalators to access platforms for the Second Avenue Subway Station at 72nd Street in Manhattan are to be installed in the basement of an existing 19-Story residential building. The escalators, which extend below the existing building foundations, require excavation of an inclined rock cavern up to 80-feet deep. Underpinning of columns within the 19-story building as well as a stone masonry party wall and columns for an adjacent 5-story building was completed prior to excavation of the rock cavern to ensure structural stability.This paper will discuss the analysis and design of the underpinning system, the installation and load transfer procedures and the cavern excavation immediately below. The underpinning system was subject to very strict deformation limits and to electronic monitoring prior to and throughout the load transfer and construction process. Key details such as the load transfer mechanism between the reinforced concrete column and the temporary structural steel underpinning frame will be discussed. The challenging rock excavation process will be described which utilized conventional equipment and pattern drilling with Damite rock splitting mortar.INTRODUCTIONPhase 1 of the Second Avenue Subway is being built by MTA Capital Construction (MTACC) to improve subway service on the east side of Manhattan. Entrance 1 for the 72nd Street Station of the Second Avenue Subway is located on the east side of 2nd Avenue at the corner of E 69th Street in New York City. Access to the station mezzanine, approximately 80-feet below grade, is designed to be routed through the basement of an existing 19-story residential building. From the sidewalk, stairs and escalators within the width of sidewalk connect the riding public to a basement level mezzanine, which turns into the building at roughly 16 feet below grade (Fig. 1). Riders then connect to three long escalators to arrive at the station mezzanine. The escalators are to be installed within an inclined and arched cast-in-place (CIP) concrete lined rock cavern (Fig. 2). Construction of both the entrance into the basement and the escalator cavern require the transfer of columns within the 19-story building. Excavation of the escalator cavern also impacts the foundation support for columns and a load bearing party wall for the 5-story residential building immediately to the north. Two stages of load transfer were used at each location. The Stage 1 transfer used a temporary underpinning system to unload the current structure which allowed for construction of the permanent transfer girders. Stage 2 transferred the load from the temporary system to the permanent transfer girders."

"Testing of the NIOSH-designed roof bolter canopy air curtain (CAC) has gone through many iterations demonstrating successful dust control performance under controlled conditions. J.H. Fletcher & Co. (Fletcher), an original equipment manufacturer of mining equipment, has further developed the CAC concept by incorporating it into the design of its roof bolting machines. A new CAC design has been developed incorporating the results of testing of the NIOSH design and the recent Fletcher design. Observations from smoke testing conducted on this new CAC design in a laboratory setting show promise for improved performance. INTRODUCTION Exposure to respirable coal mine dust can cause coal workers’ pneumoconiosis (CWP) otherwise known as black lung. If silica is present in the dust, the miner may develop silicosis in addition to CWP. CWP and silicosis are occupational respiratory diseases that are ultimately fatal and have no cure. The only method of prevention is through elimination of exposure to respirable coal mine dust and crystalline silica (quartz). The current occupational exposure limit (on an MRE basis) for respirable coal mine dust is 2.0 mg/m3 during each shift that a miner is exposed in the active workings of the mine or in mine facilities [30 CFR 70.100 2015]. Recently enacted legislation changes this standard beginning in August 2016 to 1.5 mg/m3 for a full working shift [Federal Register, 2014]. If the respirable coal mine dust contains more than 5% silica, the applicable respirable dust standard is reduced; calculated as 10 divided by the percent quartz present [30 CFR 70.101] so that the effective exposure limit for respirable quartz is 0.1 mg/m3 for a full working shift. Sources of exposure to respirable coal mine dust for the roof bolting occupations include infrequent maintenance and cleaning of the vacuum dust collection system and operating the bolter downwind (in the return air) of the continuous miner [Goodman and Organiscak, 2003]. Recent studies have demonstrated that vacuum dust collection systems are effective in capturing bolter-generated dust, if maintained and operated correctly and if proper face ventilation techniques are used. However, most exposure to respirable coal mine dust for the roof bolter occurs when the roof bolter machine is operated downwind of the continuous miner [Potts et al., 2011; Colinet et al., 2013]. Because of this higher exposure downwind of the continuous miner, the roof bolter is generally limited to working downwind of the miner only once during a production shift"

The four unit Cholla coal fired power station at Joseph City, Arizona, consumes coal from the McKinley mine located in western New Mexico. Since coals may contain relatively high uranium or thorium concentrations and may release quantities of detrimental progeny of these elements to the environs, there is concern that releases may pose an adverse environmental impact or even a health hazard to the workers. Thus, an effort was made to quantify the radionuclide content of the coal and compare the results with radionuclide concentrations already present in the vicinity of the plant. Additionally an attempt was made to assess any potential for significant enhancement of the levels of radioactivity in the environment or to plant personnel. Background gamma radiation measurements at and near the plant ranged from 8 to 12 [µ]R/hr (70 to 105 mR/yr) with a few localized anomolies measuring to 18 [u]R/hr (160 mR/yr). Levels on top of the coal storage piles decreased to ~ 6.5 [u]R/hr (60 mR/yr). Apparently the direct radiation emitted from the coal is less than the background levels in the vicinity of the plant. Measurements performed on top of several coal seams at the mine confirmed low radiation levels emanating from coal, but readings more than doubled when the overburden was monitored. Laboratory gamma spectrometry confirmed the lower amounts of natural radioactivity in the coal when compared against soil and water samples obtained in the vicinity of the plant and the overburden at the mine. In an effort to see if there is biological enhancement, animal feces was sampled. The radiation variations were found to be influenced primarily by naturally occurring potassium-40 which varied from ~ 1 to 18 pCi/gm rather than fluctuations in the uranium and thorium series. The potassium-40 concentrated in the ash were similar to the concentrations in the environs around the disposal ponds while Radium-226 concentrated in the fly ash was ~ 3 times that found in the immediate surroundings. Radon-222 gas concentrations in buildings at or near the plant ranged from 0.5 to 1.8 pCi/l and were generally lower than indoor concentrations measured in the Phoenix area. The burning of coal at the Cholla station does not appear to increase ambient levels of radioactivity found in the surrounding environs or to the workers. However, the use of byproduct fly ash for construction purposes may need to be examined.

Atualmente, há uma grande preocupação em criar materiais cada vez mais sustentáveis, dentro desse contexto, encontra-se, o compósito de matriz polimérica adicionado de fibra natural. Dentro dessa classe de fibras, uma das mais utilizadas é a fibra de bambu, a qual apresenta um grande desafio devido a dificuldade para a sua obtenção ultrapassando o comprimento crítico de utilização, que é em média 200 mm. Fibras com essa dimensão são consideradas longas, sendo utilizadas principalmente para a confecção de compósitos como carga de reforço dentro da matriz. Logo, é de fundamental importância determinar métodos simples de obtenção das fibras para se obter melhores resultados diante da finalidade do compósito. Esse trabalho visa apresentar de forma clara processos mecânicos e químicos para se obter fibras de bambu curtas, particuladas e longas, apresentando o seu potencial mecânico através de ensaios mecânicos. Ao realizar ensaios químicos e mecânicos, os procedimentos que apresentaram melhores resultados em relação a fibra ensaiada natural foram a mercerização a 5% de NaOH em solução aquosa e acetilação por uma hora a 100ºC.

A new approach to enrich MFe and RO phase from the converter slag by super gravity was investigated. The samples obtained by the gravity coefficient G=600 and cooling rate V=5K/min from 1623K to 1373K appeared significant stratification and the MFe gathered at the bottom of sample. With the help of metallographic microscopy and X-ray diffraction, it is found that large quantity of white RO phase gathered at the lower part of the sample as the concentrate, with volume fraction appearing gradient distribution along the direction of super gravity, while the upper part was mainly composed of dicalcium silicate as the tailing. The mass fractions of the FeO, MgO and MnO in the concentrate are up to 40.46%, 6.9% and 3.91%, while that in the tailing are just 11.65%, 2.15% and 1.55%. The recovery ratios of FeO, MgO and MnO in the concentrate are 60.35%, 58.45% and 72.24%, respectively.

O aço inoxidável duplex (AID) vem sendo considerado uma excelente alternativa para aplicações que requerem alta resistência à corrosão e alta resistência mecânica. Portanto, a microestrutura e as propriedades dos aços dúplex permanecem como temas de grande interesse. Para este proposito, estudou-se o efeito da laminação a morno em um aço inoxidável duplex. O foco deste trabalho foi o AID 2205 que é um dos tipos mais comuns de AID. O objetivo deste estudo é avaliar o comportamento eletroquímico do AID 2205 laminado a morno no ambiente de íons de cloretos utilizando medidas de polarização potenciodinâmica. O aço inoxidável dúplex foi laminado a morno à 600°C para 60 e 80% de redução na espessura e submetido a testes eletroquímicos. As amostras apresentaram uma excelente resistência à corrosão em solução de NaCl 3,5%. Apesar da existência de certa similaridade entre os valores de potencial de circuito aberto e potenciais de pites obtidos para todas as amostras, o número de pites observado foi maior na amostra CF, seguida pelas amostras com 60 e 80% de redução.

More than 90 per cent of the ore produced by stoping at McIntyre is mined by horizontal cut-and-fill methods. The remainder is mined by square set and fill. In the stopes on the upper levels, mill holes are spaced 80 ft. apart and usually it is feasible to mine the breast for the full distance between the mill holes in one operation and to break, clean out and fill without any support for the roof or walls, other than the odd crown bar or sprag. The ore is scraped to the mill holes by small (10 to 15 hp.) air-operated slusher hoists. No grizzlies are used over the chutes and care is taken to break up the big pieces beforehand. Fill usually is spread by tramming sand or waste in a one-ton car from the fill raise. Fill raises are driven parallel to the strike of the vein and are inclined at approximately 48°. In long stopes, where more than one fill raise is necessary, they are spaced about 300 ft. apart. It is sometimes necessary to stand square sets for a short distance each way under the brow of the fill raise. support needed increases and on the lower levels and in some wide stopes where closer support of the back is necessary, it has become standard practice to timber the stope with 12 by 12-in. timber. Rough timber sets consisting. of caps, tightly blocked to the back and supported on posts 7 ft. high, are placed at about 5 ft. intervals. These sets are generally salvaged from the lower breast before blasting and are used again on the upper slice after the fill has been placed. In general, two or three breasts may be broken down before mucking out and filling and the ground stands long enough to enable this to be done safely. On the lower levels and in certain wide stopes and in heavy ground, a more intermittent method must be used. Only one breast or even part of a breast can be blasted and the back must be timbered before the ore can be removed. In these cases, sill timbers 16 ft. long, supported at one end on posts from the fill and at the other end on pins inserted in holes drilled in the face, are used. Timber cribs 5 by 9 ft. built from the fill to the roof and tightly blocked to the back are used throughout the mine to reinforce both the timber sets and the square sets.

"Karagedik Chromite Concentrator of the ETI Holding Co., which is located in Fethiye (south Turkey), has been producing chromite concentrate assaying 47-48 % Cr2O3 from the chromite ores containing 30-35 % Cr2O3 by using gravity separation methods since 1920. The tailings having 13-14 % Cr2O3, which had been removed from this plant, were accumulated at the stockpiles amounting about 1.2 million tons. In order to recover the ultra fine chromite particles from the Karagedik Concentrator tailings, the new process including Wet High Intensity Magnetic Separation and column flotation, was developed and the Karagedik Research Pilot Plant based on this process was commissioned in 2000. At this plant, the final concentrates assaying 46-48% Cr2O3 were produced and overall plant recoveries are about 60-65%.At the chromite concentrators using gravity separation methods, if their material size is about minus 1.0 mm, chromite particles especially pass to fine fractions according to their mineralogical structures and the ore-genesis (Önal and Güney, 1990). Generally, after crushing and grinding, the shaking tables and spirals are used at the chromite concentrators; therefore fine size chromite particles (-0.038 mm) are removed as tailings. Cr2O3 content of the -0.1 mm size fraction with 52.3% of the total amount is 19.58 % with Cr2O3 distribution of 82.6%.In order to upgrade the minus 0.1 mm size fraction of the tailings, assaying about 20% Cr2O3, Karagedik Research Pilot Plant (KRPP), which includes Wet High Intensity Magnetic Separator (WHIMS) and Column Flotation units, was installed by Istanbul Technical University (ITU), Mineral Processing Section in 2000.Feeding material of the KRPP having 5 tons per hour capacity is obtained from stockpiles amounting 1.2 million tons. After attrition scrubbing, the feed is sent to a screen with aperture of 1.0 mm. The screen overflow, assaying 5-6 % Cr2O3 is removed as tailings. Screen underflow is classified to –1.0+0.1 mm and minus 0.1 mm size fractions by using cyclone and sieve bend. –1.0+0.1 mm size fraction assaying 6-7 % Cr2O3, is sent to existing gravity separation plant. Minus 0.1 mm size fraction is firstly fed to WHIMS for pre-concentration and non-magnetic product assaying 10-11 % Cr2O3 consisting of serpentine, talc and olivine minerals are separated as tailings. Also magnetic product (25-30 % Cr2O3) obtained from WHIMS is fed to the two stages conditioners after dewatered to 30 % solid ratio."

The following paper is intended to be suggestive only, and to open the way for discussion and further observation. Its preparation was requested only two days before the time limit set for the submission of the papers comprising this symposium. Thus no time existed for detailed studies, so it is largely a memorandum of such facts as have come incidentally to the notice of the writer in the study of coal in the field. The field study of sulfur in coal has received very little special attention or description from coal student&apos;s. The presence of sulfur concretions is noted in hundreds of descriptions, and certain benches of a coal bed may be described as "sulfury" or the presence and position of sulfur bands may be noted in coal sections in connection with sampling. It may be accepted that some sulfur is present in all coal. The amount varies greatly in different regions, in different beds, and in the same bed in different areas. The anthracite of Rhode Island comes the nearest of any coal known to the writer of being free from sulfur, several analyses of that coal showing less than 0.1 per cent. Subbitumi-nous coals in Colorado in a few places have close to 0.2 per cent. of sulfur on the dry-coal basis and in other states subbituminous coals approach this lower limit. Bituminous coals seldom run under 0.4 per cent. of sulfur on the dry basis, though in a few places dry bituminous coals in Colorado and Washington have between 0.3 and 0.4 per cent. The better known bituminous coals have almost everywhere over 0.4 per cent. The best of the Pocahontas and New River coals run close to 0.4 per cent., but there is very little commercial coal in Pennsylvania, Ohio, Indiana, Illinois, Kentucky, or the other states, that runs under 0.5 per cent. on the dry basis. From these minimum figures, the amount will range up to 5 or 6 per cent. or higher if visible sulfur is not excluded. It must be remembered that the usual analysis of a coal bed is not intended to give the total proportion of sulfur in the bed but the amount in the coal after the removal of the more obvious and larger sulfur masses. Professor Parr has already pointed out that, chemically, sulfur occurs in several forms: as pyrite, organic sulfur, sulfates, and possibly as un-combined sulfur. Sulfur in the form of sulfates is commonly the obvious result of the weathering of pyrite and may be found in the coal within .

To solve the problem that the sintered liquid phase fluidity characteristic of low silica (w(SiO2) < 3 wt%) and high silica (w(SiO2) > 7 wt%)) iron ores were different from actual sintering production with using the common method based on w(CaO)/w(SiO2), a new improved method based on n(Fe2O3)/n(CaO) was proposed. The differences between two methods for iron ore fluidity detection were studied. The results show that when the common method is used to detect the liquid phase fluidity, as the content of SiO2 increased from 2.12 to 11.68 wt%, the amount of CaO addition augmented from 7.88 to 32.65 wt% and the corresponding fluidity index changed from 0 to 5.68. The fluidity index has a linearly positive correlation with the content of SiO2. The improved method could significantly reduce the effect of the change of CaO addition on the fluidity characteristic of iron ore which caused by the difference of SiO2.

A pesquisa e o desenvolvimento de Materiais nanoestruturados vêm crescendo significativamente nos últimos anos. Estes materiais apresentam propriedades significativamente modificadas em comparação às dos materiais convencionais, devido às dimensões extremamente reduzidas dos cristalitos. O carbeto de Tântalo (TaC) é um material extremamente duro, apresentando elevada dureza, elevado ponto de fusão, elevada estabilidade química, boa resistência ao ataque químico e choque térmico e excelente resistência à oxidação e corrosão. Desta forma este trabalho teve como objetivo a obtenção de TaC nanoestruturado a partir do precursor tris(oxalato)oxitantalato de amônio hidratado, através de reação gás-sólido a baixa temperatura (1.000°C) e curto tempo de reação. Os materiais obtidos foram caracterizados através de difração de Raios-X (DRX), Refinamento Rietveld, Microscopia Eletrônica de Varredura (MEV), Espectroscopia de Infravermelho (espectroscopia IV), Termogravimétrica (TG). Através das analises de DRX e do refinamento Reitiveld para o TaC com S = 1,1584 observou-se a formação do carbeto de tântalo puro com estrutura cúbica e tamanho médio de cristalitos na ordem de 12,5 nanômetros.

The Atlanta Mine is located in east central Nevada, in Lincoln County, 116 km (72 miles) south of Ely and 80 km (50 miles) northeast of the old mining town of Pioche. From this famous district, high-grade copper ore was mined and shipped to a smelter in Wales in the 1850s; an early day lead blast furnace was also in operation. The Standard Slag Company began operations in May 1975 on the well known Atlanta Mine, which was operated by Roy Hardy in the 1930s. The mill is currently processing 450 mtpd (500 stpd) of gold-silver bearing ore. Mining by open pit is in a brecciated zone occurring between limestone-dolomites on the foot wall and tertiary rhyolites on the hanging wall. The quartz breccia is considered among the most abrasive in the world - shovel teeth must be replaced every week. Stripping ratio is 3.9 to 1.0. Because of the hard abrasive ore, the crushing plant consists of four units: two jaw crushers in series, one Hydrocone, and one Gyradisc. Mine feed to the primary crusher is limited to 610 mm (24 in.) in size. The remaining crushers work in closed circuit with screens to produce a mill feed of 6 to 13 mm (0.25 and 0.50 in.). Hardness of the ore is demonstrated by the fact that the reversible liners of the primary jaw crusher had to be replaced in early 1978 after handling only 39,000 mt (44,000 st) at a cost of $0.095 per mt ($0.086 per st). Another example of the extreme abrasiveness of the breccia ore was the total cost per ton in 1977 for all wear parts in the comminution circuit, including screens and grinding media. This amounted to $2.84 per mt ($2.58 per st). The Atlanta grinding plant consists of three ball mills to grind the 7 mm (1 /4 in.) crushing plant product to 85 to 90% minus 150 microns (100 mesh). Feed rate to the primary Tricone mill is determined by maintaining a cyclone overflow at 28 to 38% solids, which controls the grind mentioned above. A mixture of 90 and 65 mm (3.5 and 2.5 in. ) balls are charged to this primary mill. Both the secondary mills are charged with 50 mm (2 in ) balls. Total ball consumption is 2 kg per mt (4 lb per st). All three ball mills use rubber liners. Primary mill cyclone underflows are fed to the secondary mills close circuited with the same cyclones.

O objetivo deste trabalho compreende a realização da síntese de SnO2 dopado com aditivo Sr2 contendo diferentes quantidades molares de SrO (X)SnO2+(1-X)SrO, em que o cátion Sr2+ foi introduzido através do nitrato de estrôncio variando de 5 à 50 % em mol para uma mistura tanto em meio aquoso quanto em meio alcoólico, seguida da calcinação do pó resultante que é feita à 700°C com uma taxa de 10°C/min. Análises de caracterização como difração de raios X, área específica, calorimetria exploratória, picnometria a gás e determinação do ponto isoelétrico das suspensões aquosas foram realizadas de modo a verificar qual o agente dispersante mais apropriado para as características ácido-básicos da suspensão em questão. A partir deste determinar o potencial zeta do composto estudado através da eletroforese. Compostos intermediários a base de estanato de estanho foram identificados, e a deposição por eletroforese foi realizada com sucesso, uma vez que foi possível obter uma suspensão estável a partir dos pós cerâmicos produzidos.

INVESTIGATIONS on the above topic have recently been published by Shapiro and Kraussl and Jana and wayman in this journal and by Kessler and Pitsch.- Parts of the results in these papers are in good agreement with each other but there are also some results which are substantially different. The main points of these differences shall be briefly discussed in this communication. Shapiro and Krauss&apos; measured single-surface traces of the habit planes of reversed austenite plates formed within the martensite crystals and deduced from these measurements two distinct habit planes A = (0.174; 0.309; 0.935) and B = (0.375; 0.545; 0.749) within 3 deg. Kessler and pitsch4 found instead by two-surface analysis7 one habit plane n = {0.23; 0.62: 0.75) with a real scatter of 6 deg. The latter observation of a single habit plane apart from a certain scatter is in agreement with most of the investigations of martensite transformations. The differences between these two results are so great that they cannot be explained by experimental error. The purpose of this communication is to show that the A- and B-poles of Shapiro and Krauss are due to an erroneous interpretation of a single-surface trace analysis. The difficulties in the interpretation of such single-surface trace analyses are due to the high symmetry of cubic lattices, from which it follows that there are in general twenty-four equivalent possibilities of plotting a single-surface trace in a pole figure. All these possibilities must be taken into account, when putting different traces from different plates together in order to construct the habit plane. Alternatively the poles of all the traces may be plotted in a unit triangle. This is done in Fig. 1 with twenty-nine traces of different reversed austenite plates, all of this were measured by Shapiro and Krauss in the same plane of a single martensite ther traces taken from Fig. 13 in the Shapiro and Krauss paper&apos; which were determined by electron diffraction. The traces in Figs. 1 and 2 have to be compared with the habits A, B, and n which are under discussion. Therefore the great circles of the poles A, B, and n are plotted in Figs. 3, 4, and 5 together with a 3-deg scatter region for poles A, B and a 6-deg scatter region for pole n. Sixteen executives, technicians and operative personnel from the French mining industry, now touring mining operations in the U.S., will wind up their visit to this country at the AIME Annual Meeting. Traveling under ECA auspices, they will be in Denver on Feb. 5, Salt Lake City, Feb. 8 to 13, Bonne Terre on Feb. 16. Four of the group are engaged in bauxite mining, nine in lead and zinc, two in pyrites mining. All are interested in American mining equipment and methods, and hope to contact manufacturers&apos; representatives in the various areas they visit. A $600,000 manganese pilot plant is expected to be put into operation by Sept. 1, by the Bureau of Mines at Boulder City, Nev. S. R. Zimmerly, chief of the Bureau&apos;s metallurgical div. for the region, recently completed the mill design and flow sheet; and the Bureau is awaiting steel priorities before building. Ore from the Artillery Peak area, 60 miles south-west of Kingman, Ariz., will be used in the mill. Construction will be handled by Rex Lloyd of Boulder City.

Neste trabalho estudou-se a microestrutura e a interface de um tubo bimetálico cladeado por centrifugação, constituído externamente em aço API 5L X65Q e internamente pela superliga de Ni-Cr Inconel 625, ambos vazados pela mesma posição relativa no tubo. O vazamento do Inconel 625 causou erosão no aço que diminuiu de intensidade do lado de vazamento (região mais quente) para a o lado oposto (região mais fria), onde a região de interdifusão não se apresentou mesmo uniforme. Nas regiões mais quentes (lado vazado e meio do tubo) ocorreu o cladeamento completo, com uma interface continua entre ambos os materiais constituintes, enquanto que na região mais fria a interface apresentou descontinuidades. O aço apresentou microestrutura ferrítica-perlítica com a região adjacente a interface descarbonetada, com grãos ferriticos nanométricos em uma região estreita de 3 µm. O Inconel 625 apresentou uma microestrutura de dentritas de austenita Ni-cfc com fases de Laves interdentríticas, devido a aumento do teor de Fe, com alta densidade de discordâncias na região adjacente a interface livre de precipitados.

"The stability control of longwall coal face is the key technology of large-cutting-height mining method. Therefore, a systematic study of the factors that affect coal face stability and its control technology is required in the development of large-cutting-height mining method in China. After the practical field observation and years of study, it was found that the more than 95% of failure in coal face are shear failure. The shear failure analysis model of coal face has been established, that can perform systematic study among factors such as mining height, coal mass strength, roof load, support resistance, and face flipper protecting plate horizontal force. Meanwhile, sensitivity analysis of factors influencing coal face stability showed that improving support capacity, cohesion of coal mass and decreasing roof load of coal face are the key to improve coal face stability. Numerical simulation of the factors affecting coal face stability has been performed using UDEC software and the results are consistent with the theoretical analysis. The coal face reinforcement technology of largecutting- height mining method using the grouting combined with coir rope is presented. Laboratory tests have been carried out to verify its reinforcement effect and practical application has been implemented in several coal mines with good results. It has now become the main technology to reduce longwall coal face failure of large-cutting-height mining method.INTRODUCTIONLarge-cutting-height mining method of more than 3.5m mining height, is one of the main methods for thick-seam mining in China. Currently, the largest mining height is 7.3m and the support capacity is 1,800mt. Shendong and Jincheng mining area have the best use of large-cutting-height mining technology (Wang, 2009). Generally, the mining height ranges from 6.5m to 7m and the support capacity ranges from 1,000mt to 2,000mt, annual output of the panel is between 10 and 12 million tons and the highest are 15 million tons. The main goal of large-cutting-height mining technology is to achieve high yield and high efficiency by increasing the advancing speed of longwall face (Yuan, 2011- 2012). However, in certain geologic conditions, rib spalling and roof falls in the unsupported area often occur. Because of the large tonnage of large-cutting-height mining equipment, once the rib spalling and roof falls cause the equipment to be out of alignment, the face advancing speed could be affected seriously that in turn affects the output (Yang, 2012). Therefore, studying the failure mechanism and control technique of coal face in large-cuttingheight mining method is of great significance."
