O conceito de Fast Track é a retirada das manutenções leves de dentro de oficina, migrando-as para realização em pátios, enquanto os vagões ainda estão no trem. A mudança de estratégia de manutenção para englobar este conceito aumenta o espaço disponível nas oficinas para realização de reparos pesados, reduz a quantidade de manobras para separar os vagões avariados dos em bom estado, reduz o número de vagões retidos e, consequentemente, aumenta a disponibilidade de ativos, melhorando a capacidade de escoamento do corredor. Através do projeto piloto no corredor Centro Leste a VLI conseguiu reduzir em 45% o envio de vagões para oficina, gerando um ganho de 0,44% na DF de vagões graneleiros.

Rio Tinto’s Hope Downs Operations are currently mining iron ore in their South Central Pit. Prior to the commencement of mine operations, Hope Downs carried out an extensive archaeological investigation and identified an ancient rock shelter lying within the proposed mine boundaries. The site is significant to the traditional owners/custodians of the land in this part of the Pilbara, and thus the final pit design was changed to preserve the rock shelter, which now lies 30 m outside the mine boundary. In order to further preserve this ancient dwelling from blast-induced damage, blast design procedures were improved over time to minimise the vibration impact when blasting close to the shelter. Blasting and vibration monitoring commenced in May 2008 using pyrotechnic delay sequences and normal-direction firing. In October 2009 electronic delays were used to reverse-fire blasts close to the shelter in order to create a damage zone between the initiating holes and the rock shelter. A detailed statistical analysis of the vibration data shows a reduction in the higher levels of vibration for blasts fired after October 2009, which is most likely caused by the created damage zone. In May 2010, a site-specific vibration model was developed and implemented, and based on Monte Carlo waveform superposition. This model was used to give a further insight and improvement to the blast delay sequences when blasting close to the shelter. However, such models are expensive to implement and have limitations, which reduces their potential for estimating the probability of getting an excessive vibration due to a given blast design. In this regard, it is more realistic and significantly less expensive to use a recently developed probabilistic analysis based on simple charge weight scaling. This analysis shows that there was a higher probability of exceeding prescribed vibration limits at the rock shelter for blasts fired before October 2009 than there was for blasts fired after October 2009.

Resolution Copper Mine in Arizona, USA, is planned to be a 2000 m deep panel cave mine with virgin rock temperatures exceeding 80¦C in rock with high crystalline silica content, resulting in a very challenging ventilation and cooling system design. This is one of the largest copper orebodies ever found and, with a planned rock production rate of 120 kton/day. The project is currently in its prefeasibility phase and the paper discusses features of the ventilation and cooling system design which includes multiple ventilation shafts with total primary ventilation flow of about 3000 m3/s and both surface and underground refrigeration plants producing more than 140 MW refrigeration capacity. The cooling system features large surface bulk air coolers chilling all downcast air supplemented by an underground secondary air cooler system and a chilled service water system. This will be a very challenging mine to ventilate and cool but this work has demonstrated that it will be technically achievable with the application of existing technology.CITATION:Bluhm, S, Moreby, R G, von Glehn, F and Pascoe, C, 2013. Bayan Obo ore contains mainly bastnaesite, monazite and associated iron, fluorite, calcite, dolomite, barite, and trace amount of columbite. Due to its complex mineral compositions and similar mineral properties, it is difficult to separate and obtain rare earth and fluorite concentrates with high purity by conventional magnetic separation and flotation. In this paper, a stepwise magnetic separation process comprised of wet permanent magnetic separation (PMS), wet electromagnetic separation (EMS), and superconducting magnetic separation (SCMS) was proposed to pre-concentrate iron, rare earth, and fluorite minerals from Bayan Obo ore. The results showed that iron, rare earth, and fluorite preconcentrates with high purity and low impurity content could be achieved, which might be helpful to shorten the technological process and improve the separation efficiency for the subsequent flotation of iron, rare earth, and fluorite minerals.

"A method is described for determining the viability of hard rock orebody extraction by block caving. Using a very limited amount of geotechnical data, the procedure enhances Laubscher’s empirical stability graph method by using the complex structural modelling system (ChaSM) to assess cavability and block cave tonnages.IntroductionIn considering the selection of suitable mining methods, block caving has gained popularity over other extraction systems in recent years (Butcher, 1999). This has been ascribed to the fact that block caving is the lowest cost per ton mining method, with orebodies that were in the past considered unsuitable for caving, now being successfully mined. However, even though all orebodies will cave, a problem exists in the evaluation of economic viability — it is necessary to be able to predict both when the orebody will cave and what will be the sizes of the initial ore fragments (and the associated tonnages) that report to the drawpoints. This problem is compounded by the fact that, during the scoping study phase of a project, only limited geotechnical data may exist on which to base an assessment of whether block caving is viable or not. Empirical and numerical methods of cavability assessment do not account for the full effects of geological discontinuity trace lengths, nor for the stress regime. Those require significant geotechnical data to be available. The result is that uncertainty may exist as to whether block caving is an economic option. This uncertainty is complicated by the fact that limited experience exists with the caving of more competent orebodies.This paper describes a method for assessing cavability, and for predicting the size of initial ore fragments and the tonnages reporting to block cave drawpoints, using only the level of data normally available during a scoping study. Fragment size and tonnages are assessed by identifying potentially unstable blocks and wedges in the undercut back using statistical joint data. The effects of lateral confining stresses are accounted for by comparing the in situ stress orientations with the joint orientations. To evaluate the accuracy of the method, a back analysis exercise was conducted to predict cavability and initial tonnage for a mine in which the actual behaviour is known. The method is then applied to cavability and tonnage predictions for a hard rock orebody."

O objetivo deste trabalho foi desenvolver um compósito permeável formado por uma matriz de polipropileno reforçada com resíduos de construção e demolição (RCD). Inicialmente foi feita a limpeza, peneiramento e caracterização do RCD. O compósito foi conformado na forma de placas pelo processo de compressão a quente. O RCD foi misturado com os grânulos do polímero e a mistura disposta em um molde que foi fechado e comprimido com carga de 1 ton e mantido na temperatura de 210oC por 10 min. Foram conformadas placas permeáveis e impermeáveis variando-se o percentual dos constituintes e granulometria do RCD. Para a caracterização foram realizados ensaios de permeabilidade e flexão em três pontos. As placas permeáveis apresentaram elevado grau de permeabilidade, muito superior aos requisitos mínimos para concreto. Foi constatado que a distribuição granulométrica tem influência na resistência mecânica e permeabilidade do compósito. O aumento do teor de granulados finos promoveu aumento nas propriedades mecânicas em flexão sem perda da permeabilidade. Com a impermeabilização das placas e consequente redução de vazios as propriedades mecânicas em flexão praticamente triplicaram. Analisando os resultados de uma forma geral pode-se concluir que há margem para melhorar o desempenho mecânico do compósito sem perda da permeabilidade.

A domestic tungsten-tin ore presents very complex property. How to effectively recover the scheelite, wolframite and cassiterite in the ore has long been a difficult problem to be solved urgently. On the basis of process mineralogy study, a main flow-sheet for effective recovery of tungsten-tin minerals has been developed, which including ?fine grinding of feed?bulk flotation of all sulfides followed by their selective separation?iron recovery by LIMS?tungsten-tin minerals bulk flotation using new technique developed by our institute?tungsten-tin recovery by gravity from above tungsten-tin bulk flotation tailings?. As for the treatment of tungsten-tin bulk rougher concentrate, several flow-sheets of tungsten-tin separation by direct hydrometallurgy or a flow-sheet consisting of scheelite cleaning at elevated temperature followed by the gravity separation of scheelite cleaner tailing?separation of wolframite from cassiterite by dry HIMS or by direct hydrometallurgy are developed. For a low grade head ore, all valuable sulfide, magnetite, scheelite, wolframite and cassiterite are recovered with satisfactory in lab scale test. Concerns with crest losses have seen changes to a number of design and operating parameters to retain the integrity of the wall and the berms of the Kidston Gold MinesÆ Eldridge Pit. Until trials began in 1999 most final wall designs utilised large diameter blastholes up to the presplit row to achieve the wall angle. The berm crests were being lost, wall support requirements were increasing and affecting mining schedules and several fault areas were putting pit access at risk. Standard designs had been determined during the early mining years and while periodic modifications had been made there was a need for major blast pattern revision. This paper traces the development of wall control blasting programs over the years, relating designs to the geology and the evidence in the walls with the theories of the day and includes the recent trials that were conducted in what is a most unforgiving geology. Trials and improvements to ensure the walls were safe were conducted even as the mine neared its economic life. Instrumented monitoring of trials blasts has greatly increased the understanding of the damage criteria and enabled rapid revision of designs. Recent changes included reduction in presplit energy, charge redistribution and use of smaller blast holes for the trim patterns. Determination of a minimum proximity-to-final wall limit for production blastholes, establishment of the correct standoff to berm crests and walls and selective use of presplitting techniques for protecting crests have resulted in cost effectiveness, improved bench crest retention and an overall reduction in visible wall damage.

Dois assuntos que vêm sendo cada vez mais discutido na indústria são revisão crítica de projetos e a capacitação da equipe de operação para otimização do processo. Além dos benefícios financeiros diretos que se obtêm na redução do tempo de partida, as melhorias, quando identificadas em fases anteriores do projeto, produzem resultados positivos durante outras fases do ciclo de vida da planta. Neste sentido, o sistema de controle e a capacitação dos operadores desempenham um papel fundamental. O presente trabalho apresenta uma estratégia efetiva de se validar as lógicas de controle de uma planta por meio do simulador dinâmico de processos de alta fidelidade IDEAS, e a utilização desta ferramenta no treinamento operacional via OTS (Operator Training Simulator). Neste trabalho, é realizada uma breve revisão sobre a metodologia utilizada para a construção da arquitetura de automação que permitiu a validação das lógicas de controle e o desenvolvimento do sistema de treinamento. Especificamente, são apresentados resultados obtidos com a simulação em projetos de beneficiamento mineral, por meio da quantificação dos ganhos em operação, manutenção e segurança. Como exemplo de resultados, mais de 2000 pontos de melhoria foram encontrados em projetos executados, e mais de 14 cenários de operação foram criados para treinamento. Os ganhos observados corroboram a robustez da ferramenta utilizada e o potencial da metodologia empregada.

O movimento do fluido no interior do molde durante o processo de lingotamento contínuo possui grande impacto na qualidade do produto fabricado, pois influencia os mecanismos de formação da casca solidificada, flotação de inclusões e lubrificação da pele. A geometria complexa dos moldes de Beam Blank dificulta a garantia de fluxos térmicos simétricos, o que resulta em variação na espessura da pele; daí a importância de se estudar os parâmetros que interferem no fluxo do fluido no interior do molde. Neste trabalho verificou-se a influência da velocidade de lingotamento e do diâmetro de válvulas submersas do tipo tubulares sobre o fluxo no interior do molde. A análise do campo vetorial de velocidades revelou a existência de seis vórtices, dois na região da alma e dois em cada flange do molde. Além disso, foi encontrado que o aumento de 100L/min a 150L/min a profundidade do jato sobe de 0,74m para 0,84m, enquanto que um aumento de 67% na área de seção transversal das válvulas tubulares não promove diminuição significativa desta profundidade.

As principais operações unitárias de um processo de pelotização são: moagem, filtragem, aglomeração e queima. Das etapas citadas, a moagem, como início do processo, é uma etapa crucial para as demais operações. Foi baseado neste fato, que o presente estudo foi realizado, tendo como objetivo principal, avaliar o comportamento das misturas de minério de ferro com diferentes índices de moabilidade e definir os possíveis ajustes dos parâmetros de processo de moagem em função dos diferentes perfis mineralógicos. Foram usadas três misturas de diferentes níveis de índices de moabilidade: baixo, médio e alto, a fim de observar as respostas nas variáveis operacionais de possível atuação na rotina operacional. Para isso, uma matriz de experimento foi realizada, com oito testes para cada mistura de minério de ferro, variando os parâmetros de moagem de mínimo a máximo. As variáveis respostas foram às características físicas das misturas, superfície específica e granulometria, onde foram medidas no sistema automatizado PSI. Através dos resultados dos testes, foram calculados modelos matemáticos de superfície específica e granulometria das misturas em função dos parâmetros operacionais. Os modelos mostraram satisfatórios e aplicáveis, apresentando correlação entre as variáveis dependentes e independentes.

Reprocessing Queensland’s historical copper tailings for critical minerals is an opportunity to circularise the state’s mining industry by converting waste liabilities into assets. Mine waste valorisation enables economic rehabilitation of legacy mining sites, improves environmental outcomes, and can establish a secondary resources sector that produces a sustainable supply of critical minerals to supplement growing global demands (Australian Government, 2023). The North-West Queensland Minerals Province (NWQMP) hosts numerous copper mines with known cobalt mineralisation (Degeling, 2020). Cobalt is a critical metal essential for green energy and battery technologies, however its global supply is at risk due to geopolitical and ethical concerns (Rachidi et al, 2021). Historically mining in the NWQMP has focused on copper, leaving cobalt to theoretically accumulate in the mine waste. First-pass geometallurgical characterisation of waste repositories by the Sustainable Minerals Institute identified Capricorn Copper as a key site for further investigation into cobalt deportment and recovery potential.

"The paper discusses the accuracy of magnetic inspections of corroded hoist ropes. It quantifies the error of measured LMA (loss of metallic area) caused by presence in the rope of ferromagnetic products of corrosion. The paper concludes that in mining practice this error is not significant. Hoist Rope Corrosion and its AssessmentCorrosion is one of the most common forms of wire rope wear. For ropes working in wet mine shafts, ropes used by the fishing industry and, in general, ropes working in humid and chemically active environments, corrosion wear is usually the prime reason for rope discard. In most mining applications, rope corrosion is accompanied by fatigue cracking of wires, abrasion of external wires, internal nicking and other forms of wear.Quantification of corrosion damage in ropes using standard inspection procedures and examination methods is very difficult. Qualitative comparisons are sometimes used to describe the degree of rope corrosion to compensate for the lack of quantitative measures (SABS 0293, 1996). If available, the results of magnetic examinations of ropes may be of help in assessing their corrosion weakening.Magnetic rope examination requires that the rope first be magnetized. After that, the rope magnetic flux and the leakage flux along the rope are measured. The first is assumed to be directly proportional to rope metallic area (LMA) and its changes are indicative of the rope’s loss of breaking strength (LBS). Existence of the second indicates existence of local faults (LF) in the inspected rope. As the corrosion of rope results in development of corrosion cracks and in loss of rope metallic area, both the LF and the LMA should be used to quantify the level of rope corrosion. More specifically, the changes to the amplitude of the LF signal are considered to provide qualitative information on rope corrosion (Hansel et al., 1990), while those of the LMA signal are believed to provide quantitative information (Geller and Rousseau, 1990; Golosinski, 1996)."

As the usage of BIM increased in the construction industry, some construction owners started exploring the use of BIM for maintaining their facilities. Construction Operations Building Information Exchange (COBIE), a spreadsheet data format suggested in 2007 to manipulate building information, is considered as one of the solutions that would facilitate the process of transferring information from BIM to applications for facilities management. Several BIM and Computer Aided Facilities Management (CAFM) applications offer functions to export or import the COBIE data. To facilitate the process of generating the COBIE data out of Building Information Model, some add-in applications, such as COBIE Toolkit for Revit, also were developed. However, most of these applications handle a limited amount of COBIE data. Professionals using these add-in applications therefore sometimes end up spending a significant amount of time to add additional data manually to the COBIE data file. To automatically get a data-rich COBIE file, we developed a prototype application that extracts information from Revit, which is one of the BIM authoring tools, stores them in an external database, and then produces the COBIE file using information stored in the database. We applied our application to a pilot project and produced 8 COBIE worksheets automatically, which demonstrated a significant amount of time saving. This paper presents how our prototype application produces 8 COBIE data sets automatically. It also addresses our attempt to handle more COBIE data sets.

Com o objetivo de melhoria dos resultados de desempenho operacional identificouse uma oportunidade em reduzir o tempo de trocas programadas (Setup) na Laminação de Fio Máquina na Usina Siderúrgica de Ouro Branco. Utilizando a metodologia SMED (Single Minute Exchange of Die), obteve-se grande redução do tempo de Setup. Como esta metodologia já se demonstrou uma excelente ferramenta para redução dos tempos de setups, foi idealizado uma abordagem mais completa, sendo desenvolvido um modelo para aplicação para as paradas programadas para manutenção. Esta aplicação corroborou um enorme ganho, tanto na definição do tempo de parada programada, quanto no planejamento e padronização das atividades.

Barrick Gold Granny Smith Mine is currently undergoing conversion from an open cut operation to an underground mine at the Wallaby deposit. The underground project commenced in 2005 with the development of the reserves immediately below the pit and is now currently entering a production ramp-up phase for mining of these two initial surfaces below the pit. With increasing gold prices the owner has been forced to re-evaluate the underground project and has decided to investigate the potential of a deep level mine. This deep level underground mine presents a collection of challenges with the most notable being exploitation of a series of well separated near horizontal lodes ranging in thickness from less than 1 to 20 m. A variety of room and pillar mining methods are employed for extraction with careful consideration to resource recovery and pillar design for long-term stability. Compounding these deep level challenges is a need to accelerate mine level development to maintain the production profile of the mine. This paper describes the challenges, key learnings and outcomes of the studies undertaken to date associated with this project.

Poor floatability of fine particles is known to be the main cause of the low recovery of ilmenite in Panzhihua, which is the largest titanium mine of China. To get an optimum ilmenite recovery, selective flocculation, and flotation of fine ilmenite was investigated through flotation tests, particle size analysis, zeta potential tests and scanning electron microscopy. The results indicate that carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC) shows flocculation effect for both ilmenite and titanaugite without selectivity, while selective flocculation could be realized by the combination of water glass and CMC. It is because that competitive adsorption would take place on these two kinds of mineral when water glass and CMC are used together. On the surface of ilmenite, the adsorption ability of CMC is stronger than that of water glass, so that CMC can absorb to the same extent irrespective of the presence of a pre-adsorbed layer of water glass and ilmenite particles is flocculated by CMC. The same cannot be said of the titanaugite phase as water glass strongly adsorbs onto the titanaugite, and the adsorption of CMC is hindered. Therefore, the titanaugite particles keep dispersion. Furthermore, the flotation of fine ilmenite particles is feasible as the ilmenite floccules could react with sodium oleate. In the flotation separation of Panzhihua ilmenite ore, the recovery of TiO2 increased from 52.63% to 68.28% by selective flotation. Keywords: ilmenite, flotation, selective flocculation, adsorption

The current method employed to quantify the efficiency of separation of ferromagnetic ores by wet low intensity magnetic drum separators (WLIMS) incorporates the use of a conventional benchscale Davis Tube (DT) operating at a magnetic field intensity that is equivalent to that of the drum’s surface. However, empirical research has indicated that the magnetic force, or force index, rather than the magnetic field intensity, is the critical factor in the operation of the magnetic separator (Murariu and Svoboda, 2002). Furthermore, the current aforementioned practice would yield incorrect information as the magnetic field gradients produced by a typical WLIMS unit differs considerably from that of a bench-scale DT. In light of this, research on magnetite focusing primarily on the scale-up of DT results to pilotscale WLIMS were undertaken. The investigation entailed a comparative study between that of a typical WLIMS circuit and a bench-scale DT. The purpose was to practically evaluate the performance of a WLIMS, bench-marked against the traditional laboratory-scale DT unit. Moreover, the secondary objective was to produce a magnetite concentrate graded at 69% Fe, 95% -45μm, as a suitable source of separation media for use in the Dense Medium Separation (DMS) industry. Fundamental findings of previous works provided a framework for the study, however, a realworld approach was explored. Preliminary testwork conducted at Mintek investigated the performance of a DT and a typical multi-stage laboratory-scale WLIMS circuit (operating at 1000 Gauss at the surface). The results attained indicated that a DT operating at high intensities is comparable to a single rougher WLIMS stage. Additionally, it was observed that the three stage laboratory-scale WLIMS circuit performed similarly to the DT operating at 1000 Gauss. Moreover, piloting testwork was undertaken, carried out in larger 380mm drums, and the results attained showed a strong correlation with laboratory-scale findings. The activity of aluminum in solid Cr-A1 alloys has been measured by an isopiestic technique between Cr-A1890' and 1126" and 13 and 80 at. pct Al. The integral free energy of mixing has a minimum value of —5600 cal per g-atom at 59 at. pct Al. The maximum solid solubility of aluminum in chromium was determined to be 43 at. pct Al, and the composition limits of the compounds CrA14, Cr4A19, and Cr5Al, at 1000"~ were found to be 79 to 80, 66 to 70, and 59 to 63 at. pct Al, respectively. The thermodynamic properties of the Cr-A1 system have been investigated as part of a thermodynamic study of aluminum-transition metal systems.172 Little information is available on the equilibrium properties of the Cr-A1 system. The heats of formation of solid Cr-A1 alloys have been determined by Kubaschewski and Haymer at 600" and low-temperature specific heat data have also been obtained.~ More extensive work has been performed on the phase diagram, and a compilation has been provided by Hansen and Anderko,~ their phase diagram at elevated temperatures being essentially based on the work of Bradley and LU.~ The high-temperature portion of the phase diagram shows an intermediate phase CrA14 decomposing peritectically at 1018°C and existing at 82 at. pct A1 at 1000°C. They also identified the compounds with solubility limits of 72 to 75 at. pct A1 at 1000°C, and Cr5A1,, existing at 61 at. pct A1 at 1000°C. The maximum solid solubility of aluminum in chromium at 1000°C was found to be 46 at. pct Al. These elevated-temperature data were obtained by examination of quenched samples and were considered as less precise than the lower-temperature data. Koester, Wachtel, and Grube7 have revised the phase diagram as a result of their magnetic susceptibility and X-ray study. The results of this work differ appreciably from those of Bradley and Lu at temperatures above 800°C. The CrA1, compound is given as existing between 79 and 81 at. pct A1 at 1000°C, and they do not indicate the presence of a CrA13 phase reported by Bradley and Lu. They also report the compound Cr4Alg as having solubility limits of 66 to 70 at. pct A1 at 1000°C, while Bradley and Lu show this compound stable only up to 870°C. Koester et al. state that the high-temperature modification of the compound Cr5A18 is stable down to 1125"C, and not 980°C as stated by Bradley and Lu, and that the low-temperature modification of Cr5Al, has a range of homogeneity of 58 to 63 at. pct A1 at 1000°C. They also report that the maximum solid solubility of aluminum in chromium is 43 at. pct A1 at 1000°C. APPARATUS AND EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE An isopiestic method was employed which has been successfully applied to the determination of aluminum activities in solid ~e-All and Ni-Al alloys. Alloy specimens were held at different positions in a temperature gradient and were equilibrated with aluminum vapor from an aluminum reservoir kept at the temperature minimum of an impressed thermal gradient in a closed alumina system. Diffusion of aluminum into the specimens occurred until equilibrium was reached, at which the partial pressure of aluminum in each of the specimens was given by the vapor pressure of the pure aluminum reservoir. The activity of aluminum referred to liquid aluminum as the standard state in a given equilibrated sample at temperature T could therefore be expressed by: vapor pressure of pure aluminum at _ the temperature of the reservoir Vapor pressure of pure liquid aluminum, at specimen temperature T Since both the temperature of the aluminum reservoir and the specimen temperatures were determined experimentally, and the vapor pressure of pure aluminum is known as a function of temperature,' the activity of aluminum in a given aluminum alloy of known composition could be calculated. Initial runs were made with samples consisting of pure chromium chips placed in alumina crucibles. These runs exhibited large inconsistencies, indicating that equilibrium was not attained. High aluminum content Cr-A1 alloy powders were therefore substituted for the pure chromium specimens. The starting composition of the alloys was adjusted through experimentation until the concentration change necessary to attain equilibrium was small. In this manner, consistent results were obtained in reasonable times. SPECIMEN PREPARATION Alloy specimens were prepared from chromium of 99.997 pct minimum metallic purity: with 0.028 to 0.038 pct H, 0.0002 pct N, and 0.27 to 0.46 pct 0 (Aviquipo, Inc.). The aluminum had a purity of 99.99+ pct and the following impurities: 0.003 pct Cu; 0.002 pct S; 0.002 pct Fe; 0.001 pct Pb; 0.001 pct Ga (Aluminum Corp. of America).
