During 1997 and 1998 two successful zinc feasibility studies, Skorpion and Sanyati, were carried out by Tecnicas Reunidas based on the modified ZINCEX® technology. The technical viability of each project was proved during more than 600 h of continuous running in a pilot plant. The Skorpion zinc project would recover 150,000 t SHG Zn/y from an oxidized zinc ore of a Namibian mine. The economical study showed that the plant would have the lowest production costs in the world. The Sanyati zinc project would treat a bleed from an existing copper refinery in Zimbabwe to recover 5,000 t SHG Zn/y. In the first case the electrowinning cellhouse was supplied by Union Miniere and in the second by Tecnicas Reunidas. This article highlights the pilot plant results and the advantages of the proposed process over conventional zinc production practices.

For the producer of industrial rocks and minerals, marketing is often the only means of survival. His material must be sold. There is little of the impersonal force of the market regulating supply and demand. No commodity exchanges facilitate his efforts to dispose of the material he produces, and the success or failure of his business depends primarily on prompt and correct response to market needs and requirements. This response is particularly vital where materials of low unit value must be shipped to distant consumers owing to a relative rarity of suitable deposits. The advantage of positive response to change can best be illustrated by hypothetical cases showing how problems can be turned into opportunity through marketing ingenuity. Three such cases dealing with materials of unit values in the range of $5 to $100 per ton are outlined below.

The presentation describes new data concerning the age of the Mid-Atlantic Ridge (MAR) hydrothermal fields. The collection of massive sulfides recovered from six hydrothermal fields has been dated using the 230Th/U method. The range of the data obtained is rather wide: from 2.2 up to 65.1 thousand years BP. Three stages of hydrothermal activity were detected for this 65 Kyr period of geological evolution: modern (0 -5), 20-25 and 58–65 thousand BP (Figure 1). This conclusion was confirmed by dating the associated metalliferous sediment layers which also indicate the hydrothermal events led to the formation of sulfide mineralization. There is a correlation between the age and size of massive sulfide deposits: older deposits are larger (Table 1). This and other applications of obtained data will be discussed in presentation.

The incorporation of industrial waste into ceramic tiles is a major trend in the search for alternative raw materials, and also in the search for environmentally correct disposal of waste. In order to evaluate the effect of the incorporation of residues from the ornamental stone industries, in the properties of ceramic tiles, incorporations of up to 40% by weight of the residue in ceramic mass were studied. It is noteworthy that this residue is constituted basically by limestone and its characterization was performed by grain size analysis, Atterberg boundaries, grain density and chemical analysis by X-ray fluorescence. The specimens were burned at 800 °C and the following properties were evaluated: linear retraction, water absorption and bending rupture stress. The results indicated that the residue of ornamental rocks is a material with potential to be used as a component in the mass of red ceramic tiles.

The MMG Century mine, which is the largest zinc/lead mine in Australia, began operating in 1999 and ceased mining from the open pit in July 2015, with processing completed in early 2016. Closure plans were developed from 2006, and detailed planning for closure commenced in early 2011 with the appointment of a dedicated closure planning resource. The site will continue to be managed during the active and passive closure phases to complete rehabilitation commitments and demonstrate that closure completion criteria have been achieved.Completion of the mining/processing phase of the project provides an opportunity to reflect on successes, missed opportunities and lessons learnt with respect to planning and execution of mine closure. This paper highlights examples of success at Century and also identifies key learnings and areas for improvement in progressive closure outcomes. Specific examples examine mine planning and execution involving bulk movement of waste rock and construction of permanent waste encapsulation landforms. The paper also provides recommendations for other sites that are planning for closure.Decisions made during the operational phase of the project life can result in a significant increase in closure liability and reduce the likelihood of achieving lease relinquishment. Inúmeras indústrias necessitam de sistemas de tratamento de água que favoreçam o processo de descarte de seus efluentes, além do aproveitamento do reuso de água. A mineração e siderurgia podem apresentar rejeitos com metais, que necessitam de tratamentos econômicos e sustentáveis. A biossorção é um exemplo de técnica que vem ganhando interesse em diversas áreas da pesquisa. O objetivo do estudo foi avaliar a porcentagem de remoção de íons de níquel de uma solução monoelementar de cloreto de níquel II (NiCl2+) em pH 2, 4 e 6. Para isso, utilizou-se um sistema de batelada, e 1g de consórcio bacteriano liofilizado (sem ser autoclavado) isolado de amostra de terra. Os resultados indicaram que a eficiência da biossorção foi maior para o pH 6, e que o consórcio bacteriano foi eficiente na remoção de íons de Ni2+.

"A pressing issue that has often been the topic of discussion in iron-making operations in India is the high content of alumina in the country’s iron ore deposits. The presence of alumina has hampered production by affecting slag fluidity, and thereby the hot metal quality. Iron ores from Indian mines are generally rich in hematite, with traces or small amounts of goethite/limonite, kaolinite, gibbsite and quartz reported from time to time. In day-to-day production, emphasis is placed on checking the chemical analysis of product samples, but the true solution to the alumina problem lies in estimating the mineralogy of the ore samples. We developed a mathematical model, based on singular value decomposition, to predict mineralogy from classical chemical analysis. We then used X-ray diffraction patterns, scanning electron microscope analysis, and grain counting with an optical microscope to determine actual mineral compositions and to test the values predicted by the model. The results indicate that with regular calibration, the model can be used as a simple, fast and effective tool to predict on a regular basis the mineralogy of multiple samples.IntroductionIndian blast furnaces use high-grade iron ores (as lumps or as sinter) and coke (obtained from the destructive distillation of coal) as raw materials for the production of high-quality hot metal to be converted into different steel products through the Linz- Donawitz process. The iron ores are mainly sourced from the Singhbhum region of Odisha and Jharkhand states, the Bailadialla region of Chattisgarh state and the Bellary region of Karnataka and Goa states, and are mainly classified based on size as (1) lump ore (fed directly into blast furnaces), (2) fines (converted into sinter/pellets and fed to blast furnaces) and (3) slimes (< 0.15 mm; currently dumped in huge slime ponds). Any variation in the quality of the ores supplied results in variations in the production trends of hot metal."

In the mid 60's Prochem & Hydrochem Development, it's research division, developed the high efficiency Maxflo impeller. Since the Maxflo impeller had a design that had proven to be very efficient in gas-liquid-solid contacting, it was a natural extension to apply this design to flotation & the research commenced in the mid 80's. An opportunity to test the energy savings occurred at Dickenson Mines in 1987, & comparative results with existing conventional flotation cells showed a marked increase in capacity, grade & recovery with 25% less power applied. This r success was followed by the installation of the fist agitated Flotation Colunm (5ft. dia. x 25ft. tall). Underground transport and communication in collieries was the theme selected for the 1983 mining school conducted by The South African Institute of Mining and Metallurgy. The response from the industry was so good that three separate schools of one week each were arranged, and a total of 222 delegates attended. The Coal Utilization review arrived too late to appear in the May issue. Coal utilization technology is improving due to the urgency with the 1990 Clean Air Act and the incentives provided by the Clean Coal Technology (CCT) program. Advances in the CCT are the subject of this report because of their broad industry application, support and involvement. Clean coal demonstration program Projects in the $5 billion Clean Coal Technology program are jointly funded cooperative agreements - not contracts - between government and industry. The industry participant in each project contributes at least 50% of the total cost. The participant takes primary responsibility for the project and is awarded any patent rights for inventions that may occur during the demonstration. The government, on the other hand, ensures that schedules are met, costs are controlled and project objectives are met.

This paper will discuss the construction of nearly 165 m (540 ft) of 3.5. m (138 in) o.d. reinforced concrete pipe to replace an existing utilidor under the Duwamish River in Seattle, Wash. The project required that two 27.4 m (90 ft) deep shafts be installed for use as jacking and reception shafts during the tunneling operation, and permanent vaults once completed. Soil conditions to be excavated consisted of soft saturated sand and silt with a 21.3 m (70 ft) water head. This required the shafts to be constructed using ground freezing techniques and the tunnel installed by pipe jacking, using a Mechanical Earth Pressure Counter Balance (MEPCB) slurry shield. The original utilidor was constructed between 1924 and 1925, and has since been deliberately flooded because it is considered to be structurally unsound.

The carbonation reaction of steelmaking slag has been known for many years. However, the size of blocks manufactured from this by-product material has been limited due to the difficulty of achieving a uniform reaction throughout the block. Using newly developed conditions, large porous slag blocks (1.0 x 1.0 x 0.5 m) were produced by car¬bonation of steelmaking slag with the optimum amount of water and supplying CO2 deep into slag powder compacted in molds. The development of these blocks has great poten-tial to solve the problem of slag utilization, for example, by recycling slag in large car¬bonated blocks for artificial fish reefs and seaweed cultivation beds. This paper de¬scribes the carbonation reaction, the new process for producing large slag blocks, and the utilization of blocks in past and recent years.

EMR's recently commissioned Pilot Plant in Fredericton, N.B. Canada, the latest and largest in the company's sequence of prototype and demonstration systems, is being used as a process development facility for mining clients worldwide. Fitted with two microwave reactors and 75 kW generators, this plant is designed as a two-stage continuous processor with a throughput in the 5-10 tpd range depending upon the material feedstream. This facility has been used principally to calcine pyrite and arsenopyrite gold concentrates although it can readily accommo­date carbonaceous materials as well as a wide range of other ore types. Engineering details of the plant and the results of the first nine months of operation are presented. The plant has proven very successful as an advanced process development facility as well as a basic production unit module.

The measures taken by Rand Carbide Limited from the 1950s to 1976 to control dust emission from the electric furnaces at its Witbank factory are described. A new design of furnace for calcium carbide followed by a dry-fabric filtration plant for the furnace gases was not successful in arresting the dust. A 131 m chimney commissioned in 1968 effectively dispersed the dust-laden gases from both carbide and ferrosilicon production and so brought considerable alleviation. In 1974 a bag-filter dust-collecting plant was successfully commissioned on a 6 MV.A carbide furnace, and this was followed in 1976 by a bag-filter plant on a 46,5 MV.A ferrosilicon furnace. The company has spent considerable effort and money over two decades in trying to combat dust emission, but eventual success had to await technological development.

The electrolytic zinc plant, with a capacity 75,000 tonnes per year, is part of Zaklady Gorniczo-Hutnicze BOLESLAW. It is the biggest zinc producer in Poland. The electrolytic zinc plant started up in 1955 with a capacity 15,000 tonnes per year, and multiplied its production by 5 till nowadays. At the beginning, the plant processed only calcine from zinc oxides (60% Zn, 3-4% Pb, 0,03 % Cd) which were produced from Waeltz fumes by calcination in a rotary kiln. Participation of calcine from zinc sulfide concentrates in the feed grew during the BOLESLAW plant expansion. Currently, only roasted sulphide concentrates, calcine from fluid-bed roasters, is processed. This paper presents a general description of the ZGH BOLESLAW plant and discusses the processes of roasting, leaching, purification and electrolysis. Also shown are the chemical analyses of the various process materials.
