Scandium is an important industrial metal for which demand is projected to increase in the future. Although many Sc deposits are secondary, Sc is scavenged by clinopyroxene during fractional crystallization of primary, mafic-ultramafic magmas. Sc may thus occur in sub-economic concentrations in mafic-ultramafic intrusions. In this work, we present new data on the concentration of Sc in the Bushveld Complex (BC) of South Africa. The eastern and western limbs of the BC are considered to be largely pristine, primary magmatic deposits, whereas the northern limb shows evidence of largescale, localized crustal contamination. Samples from the primary magmatic cumulates of the eastern limb, from the mineralized Flatreef of the northern limb, and from the crustal-contaminated Footwall Assimilation Zone (FAZ) of the Flatreef were analysed for Sc. Despite the FAZ containing abundant clinopyroxene, interpreted to have recrystallized from the original cumulates in the presence of melted sedimentary rocks, no significant differences are seen in the concentration of Sc compared to other cumulate rocks of the BC containing less-abundant clinopyroxene. The concentration of Sc in the analysed samples is mainly controlled by mineralogy, with anorthosites, chromitites, and harzburgites containing under 20 ppm, and norites and pyroxenites containing 20–40 ppm. The parapyroxenites of the FAZ are less enriched in Sc than expected, suggesting that Sc may have been lost during alteration and recrystallization.

The Comstock Lode, a world-class precious metal vein district near Virginia City in western Nevada, U.S.A. (Fig. 1), produced 8.3 million ounces (0.28 X 106 kg) of gold and 193 million ounces (6.56 X 106 kg) of silver during the period 1859 to present (Bonham and Papke, 1969). More than 95% of production was from the Comstock fault, while the adjacent Silver City, Occidental and Flowery vein systems produced about $10 million (U.S.). Within the Comstock fault high-grade ore bodies, or bonanzas, were distributed over 2.3 miles (3.8 km) along strike and persisted to >3000 feet (>900 m) below the surface (Fig. 2). Bonanzas consisted of as much as 1.4 million tons (1.3 million tonnes) of ore grading up to 1.9 oz./ton (65 gm/ton) Au and 30 oz./ton (1020 gm/ton) Ag (Table 1). Some bonanzas occurred in the main Comstock fault plane while others, including the highest grade bonanzas, formed in hangingwall frac- tures. After 1880 most ore consisted of lower-grade vein material surrounding mined- out bonanzas and large volumes of mineralized vein and wall rock in the Comstock hanging- wall that were mined from open cuts. Deep mining was hindered by large quantities of hot water and bad ground which ultimately defined the limits of underground production. The widths and richness of Comstock bonanzas strongly influenced U.S. mining law, milling and underground mining methods, and securi- ties regulations that are in practice today. Within the district Mesozoic metasedimentary rocks, metavolcanic rocks, and granitic in- trusions are overlain by Miocene volcanic rocks (Thompson and White, 1964). Veins cut all lithologies. Given the current status of political discussion in Europe about raw materials issues, the sustainable development of the extractive industry and the reduction of its environmental and societal footprint are among the key topics in this discussion. In this context, the European Commission approved the EO-MINERS project (Earth Observation for Monitoring and Observing Environmental and Societal Impacts of Mineral Resources Exploration and Exploitation). The overall aim of EO-MINERS is to bring into play EO-based methods and tools to facilitate and improve interaction between the mineral extractive industry, authorities, and the society in view of its sustainable development while improving its societal acceptability. Developing generic, standardised and reliable EO-based products to monitor the environmental and societal footprint of mining projects is the way chosen by EO-MINERS to improve this interaction, along with the organisation of tripartite meetings gathering all relevant stakeholders. The project uses existing EO knowledge and carries out new developments on three demonstration sites (Sokolov lignite mining area, Czech Republic, Witbank coal field, South Africa, Makmal gold mine, Kyrgyzstan) to further evaluate and demonstrate the capabilities of integrated EObased methods and tools in monitoring the environmental and societal footprints of the extractive industry during all phases of a mining project, from the exploration to the exploitation and closure stages. It contributes providing reliable and objective information about affected ecosystems, populations and societies, to serve as a basis for a sound ?trialogue? between corporate stakeholders, governmental organisations and societal stakeholders. The project already developed a set of consolidated indicators based upon previous knowledge about mining-related issues along with interviews of national, regional, and local stakeholders. These indicators reflect known environmental and societal issues at mining sites as well as the interest of various relevant stakeholder groups. The process described in the EO-MINERS project ? policy assessment > indicator identification > choice of suitable EO tools able to serve monitoring task > monitoring by EO tools > making available objective information for fair dialogue among stakeholders ? is generally applicable to all stages of a mining project. The key to success will be the right choice of indicators addressing the problem and subsequently the right choice of suitable EO tools and finally the willingness of all stakeholders to find a common solution. To this end, the EO-MINERS project organises site-specific ?trialogue? workshops at each demonstrations site, which aim to provide relevant information in adequate quality to the stakeholders as common ground for discussions. Local stakeholders, including mining companies, regulatory bodies, and community representatives are invited to participate in these workshops where the relevance of the developed EO-based products to environmental and societal impact assessment will be discussed. The presentation will discuss results obtained during these trialogue workshops, as well as the success and difficulties and reluctances encountered. The project will further indicate ways and means how the EO products and other project results may be used for monitoring purposes in all phases of a mine.

The AC electromagnetic (EM) field effects are investigated for the possibility to extract particles (impurities, precipitates, oxides, bubbles, etc.) from molten silicon during the directional solidification of silicon ingot. The dynamics of particles are affected by the hydrodynamic drag, buoyancy, turbulent fluctuations and the EM force via the local pressure distribution. The EM force leads to high mixing rates, transitional flow structures and turbulence of the melt, contributing to the particle dispersion, transport and separation to a desired location. Application to silicon kerf loss recycling by melting and solidifying in the presence of AC EM field is presented for a variety of cases using 3D models for general flow structure and axisymmetric models for moving solidification front long time tracking. This paper demonstrates the effects of flow on the time dependent particle ‘swarm’ transport and the eventual modified distribution in the final ingot.

Laboratory studies show that ignition of a dispersed combustible dust in an open vessel may be prevented by adequate inerting . Factors affecting the inerting requirements are -- dust concentration , spark energy , ignition temperature , composition of the substances used for inerting , fineness of dust and type of combustible . The oxygen concentration of the atmosphere and in some instances the proportion of admixed inert powder and moisture required to prevent ignition are given for 367 dust samples . Variations in inerting requirements with strength of igniting source are discussed .

Producto de este sistema de calidad, Iscaycruz logró obtener cuatro estrella NOSA en la primera auditoría y se constituyó como la primera mina peruana subterránea en lograr la certificación internacional de "muy bueno" en Salud, Seguridad y Medio Ambiente. De forma, que la minera está encaminada a ser una operación minera modelo, con una clara concepción de empresa minera segura, limpia y rentable, ética y valores empresariales que consideran la priorización de la salud, seguridad y medio ambiente.

"PROJECT OVERVIEWThe Sistema de Potabilización Área Norte project (Northern Area Purification System) was a major expansion of the potable water system in Buenos Aires Province, Argentina. The aim of the project was to transport and purify raw water from the Paraná River to provide potable water for five communities in the northern part of the province, benefitting up to two million inhabitants. The project was constructed by a joint venture of four South American contractors (“the JV”), and consisted of the following key components:• Treatment Plant: A 16 hectare area was cleared for the construction of a treatment plant to purify 900,000 m3/day of raw water from the Paraná River and distribute it to the surrounding communities.• Bored Tunnel: Nearly 15 km of 3.6 m inner diameter tunnel, ranging from 18 to 22 m below grade, was bored with two EPB tunnel boring machines to draw the raw water from the river. The TBMs started from a central launch shaft and proceeded in opposite directions: Cristina advanced northbound to the Paraná River Intake System, and Liliana advanced southbound to the new treatment plant.• Access & Ventilation Shafts: Five access shafts and eight ventilation shafts were installed along the length of the tunnel. The access shafts were designed to provide entry points for inspection and maintenance of the final tunnel. The five shafts consisted of: one central launch shaft in the middle of the tunnel alignment, one retrieval shaft at each end of the tunnel (Intake and Treatment Plant, respectively), and two intermediate shafts. The intermediate shafts were installed before the TBM passed, with a final liner to be installed afterwards. Access Shaft 3, the intermediate shaft located between the launch shaft and the treatment plant, experienced persistent leaks during initial excavation attempts."

During some distillation experiments conducted by the Bureau of Mines in cooperation with the Trent Process Corporation it was observed that amalgams of heavy petroleum oils and finely pulverized coal tended to produce a denser coke than that obtainable from the coal when retorted alone . Even anthracite coal when retorted with oil yielded a coke . This led the writers to believe that by mixing a lowrank coal ( sub-bituminous or even lignite ) - with asphaltic oil and retorting it, a coke suitable for domestic fuel could be made . Thus there was contemplated the production of domestic coke and the utilization of a low- grade oil in one operation . - In order to decide on the practicability of this process , it was necessary to know the value of products obtainable by such a method , as compared with those obtained by separate distillation . A laboratory method was therefore devised , and while it was realized that no small - scale testing apparatus for destructive distillation gives results that are directly applicable to commercial - scale operations , by keeping distillation conditions uniform for comparative tests , results were obtained valuable for purposes of comparison . The plan was to distill mixtures of coal and oil in a laboratory retort , and then distill the constituents separately under the same conditions . The comparative quantities of products yielded were thus directly obtained , and their quality was determined by analysis . The following are the main points investigated : ( 1 ) Quantity and quality of coke ; ( 2 ) Quantity of oils boiling below 221 °C . ( gasoline stock) and oils boiling at 221 to 300° C . ( kerosene stock) ; and ( 3) Quantity and quality of gases .

TRINIDAD, British West Indies, is an island near the north coast of South America, situated between latitudes 10° and 11° N:, and. opposite the numerous outlets of the Orinoco River Delta. It is separated from Venezuela by the Gulf of Paria (salt, water) and straits over 5 mi. (8 km.) wide. The area of the island is approximately 1750 sq. mi. (453,- . 250 hectares) and the population is approximately 400,000. The climate is tropical with an annual rainfall of from 45 to 60 in. (114 to 152 cm.). The oil fields consist of several units, or fields, located in the southern half of the island. Approximately 90 per cent. of the total production has been yielded by fields situated within 7 mi: (11.3 km.) of the famous asphalt lake and on the southwest peninsula. The most important producing fields, or units, are the following, which are shown on the accompanying map: Brighton, or Pitch Lake Field, operated by the Trinidad Lake Petroleum Co., Ltd., is situated beside the famous Pitch Lake; it, even encroaches on the lake. Vessigny Field, operated by the Trinidad Lake Petroleum Co., Ltd., is situated 2 mi. (3.2 km.) south of Pitch Lake. Lot One Field, operated by the Petroleum Development Co., Ltd., the United British Oilfields of Trinidad, Ltd., and Stollmeyer, Ltd., is situated 3 mi. south of Pitch Lake upon Lot One of Morne 1'Enfer Forest Reserve and adjoining properties. The iron ore district of Gol-e-Gohar (GEG) is located 60 km south-west of the city of Sirjan, in the Kerman Province of the Islamic Republic of Iran. Six exploration targets have been identified and iron ore has been mined from one area with dry and wet concentrate products sold. Prior to mining commencing in 1999, the proven reserves were estimated at 265 million tonnes (Mt) in 2004 and 40 Mt of 100 Mt overburden has since been mined. Of the six exploration targets, the largest anomaly in the GEG district is Deposit No 3. This paper discusses economic considerations focusing on mine extraction and construction of a concentration and pelletising plant to process ore from Deposit No 3 of GEG. Planned capacity of 10 Mt product (concentrate and pellet) per year is targeted to commence in 2011, and nominal capacity by 2014. The economical evaluation and analysis is one of the most important stages in the feasibility study of mine development. Financial calculations including the provision of financial resources, operation period revenue, loss and profit statement, cash flow, net cash flow, internal rate of return and net present value have been undertaken as part of the feasibility study. The feasibility study operating plan assumes a large open pit mine containing proven reserves of approximately 250 Mt. The feasibility study assumed an economic return of $80 per tonne iron pellet. The economic study determined that Deposit No 3 of GEG can be economically developed by open pit mining followed by magnetite separation and flotation to generate iron concentrate and pellets.

A new cationic collector, bis(2-hydroxy-3-chloropropyl) dodecylamine (N23), that can be dissolved in water easily was synthesized successfully. Its flotation performance to quartz was investigated compared with dodecyl amine in hematite reverse flotation system. It was found that N23 showed stronger collecting performance to quartz than dodecyl amine. The maximum recovery of 98% to quartz was obtained at a collector concentration of 43.3 mg/L in the pulp pH range of 6-9. This collector can be used to float quartz from hematite when starch was used as depressant. Optimal separating results with 90.06% iron recovery and 66.3% iron grade to artificially mixed sample were achieved at a collector concentration of 43.3 mg/L and a starch concentration of 23.3 mg/L at neutral pulp pH when hematite and quartz were mixed at a mass ratio of 3:2. The adsorption mechanism of the collector on quartz surface was investigated by infrared spectroscopic analysis and zetapotential measurements, which revealed that electrostatic attraction and hydrogen bonding adsorption occurred between the collector and quartz surface.

Shock tubes are used to simulate large-scale arena explosions without the use of full-scale arena sites that utilize large quantities of explosives. Instead, small explosive charges can be used to drive shock tubes. When this is done, the geometries of the explosive charges can alter the resulting pressure time curve. A common geometry chosen for the explosive charge is a sphere in order to be congruent with the spherical shockwave that emanates symmetrically in three dimensions from the detonation point. This paper reports on the findings from experiments that study the effects of altering the charge geometries and explosive types while keeping the TNT equivalency constant. Peak pressures and durations were affected by these changes. Directional phenomena are exaggerated by the use of certain charge shapes and detonation points. The speed of the detonation front in the explosive being greater than the speed of the shockwave in air played a critical role in the resulting pressure time waveforms. Waveform manipulation can be used to generate job specific waveforms that ultimately benefit the shock tube operators and their clients.

"The sleek new air traffic control tower at the San Francisco International Airport stands at 221 feet tall and is set to replace the existing air traffic control tower by 2016. This aluminum-clad, torch-like structure and three-story Integrated Facilities Building at the base are situated between Terminal 1 and Terminal 2 adjacent to the tarmac. Berkel & Company Contractors, Inc. and Simpson Gumpertz & Heger Inc. worked in conjunction with structural engineers from Walter P. Moore Engineers and Consultants, geotechnical engineers from URS Corporation, architects from Fentress Architects, and general contractors from Hensel Phelps Construction Company on the performance-based design of a foundation to support this critical facility, which is located in a high seismic zone and situated on the very soft soil of the San Francisco Bay margin. With the loading demands and performance criteria established and Young Bay Mud thicknesses ranging from 44 to 47 feet thick across the site, the design team employed a total of 214 24-inch diameter Auger Pressure Grouted piles, which were drilled into the underlying Franciscan Formation as deep as 148 feet below existing grade. Pile reinforcement included full-length confined cages.The piles were designed to resist Maximum Considered Earthquake axial demands as high as 1,400 kips in compression and 700 kips in tension. The performance-based pile design included verification of shear capacity under double-plastic-hinge flexural mechanisms, verification of pile ductility via non-linear moment-curvature analyses, and consideration of curvatures due to kinematic as well as inertial loading.The team implemented an extensive pile load test program including a full-scale static compressive load test on a sacrificial test pile and five non-destructive high-strain dynamic load tests, four of which were performed on indicator piles that were later used as part of the foundation system. These piles were monitored with extensive embedded instrumentation throughout their length, including strain gauges and accelerometers."

The mining industry is facing some key challenges that provide a compelling case for geometallurgy initiatives. Over the last 30 years, the average grade of Australian orebodies being mined has halved while the waste removed to access the minerals has more than doubled. In the last eight years, the industry’s energy consumption has increased 70 per cent while multi-factored productivity has fallen 24 per cent. The paper documents a broad range of industry case studies which demonstrate strategies for gaining value from geometallurgy.The mining industry constantly faces the key questions of how significant ore variability is on mine valuation and how would knowledge of the variability change the mining schedule, mine to mill design and operation. Using case studies the paper describes the methods used for incorporating mineral extraction attributes into orebody models and their technical integration into daily operation as well as mine planning optimisation. While pit optimisation from a fully attributed geometallurgical model highlights areas of opportunity and risk it is shown that during the scheduling phase of mine planning that significant value can be added. The benefits from these projects included reducing geotechnical and environmental risk, improving mine to mill performance, option analysis and quantified cash flow risk. There is growing acceptance within the minerals industry that ‘realistically assumed modifying factors’ defined by a competent person/s are not sufficient to mitigate the risk of funding mining ventures. Geometallurgy is moving away from factored ore reserves to data-rich block models providing reliable information for mining, metallurgical and environmental considerations.

During the last 20 years, experimenters have sought to utilize pulverized coal in boiler plants, but refractory and slag troubles have usually overbalanced any gains in efficiency that were obtained. These troubles were caused largely by lack of knowledge of the proper methods of coal preparation and lack of a furnace design that would be adaptable to pulverized-coal firing. When this information was obtained the results were so much more satisfactory that within the last 5 years approximately 80,000 boiler hp. have been installed in plants ranging from 1000 to 20,000 boiler hp. rated capacity, which are operating at an average of 174 per cent. of rating. The first commercial installation for burning pulverized coal under boilers was made at the Parsons shops of the M. K. & T. railroad in 1916. Of eight 250-hp. water-tube boilers thus fitted, six were operated continuously for 3 yr., when oil was obtained at such a low price as to warrant its use. Since then, this plant has been operating alternately on pulverized coal and oil, depending on prevailing prices. Recently gas has been discovered within 20 mi. of this plant, so that this fuel may also be used. No change in furnace design was made when changing from pulverized coal to oil or gas firing. One of the principal advantages of this method of firing is its ability to utilize, with maximum efficiency, all kinds of coal, irrespective of quality or physical characteristics. In fact, quite a number of the present pulverized-coal installations were made for the purpose of utilizing coal that could not be marketed or used in any other way. The Pacific Coast Coal Co., at Black Diamond, Wash., formerly hand fired the boilers, using approximately 125 tons of prepared steam-size coal daily. The Black Diamond steam coal is the best quality of coal for steaming purposes mined in that section of the country, and there is a market for all that can be produced. By installing a pulverizing plant, it was possible to substitute coal of a size and quality that had no commercial value, so that 125 tons daily of the best steam coal formerly used at the mines is now marketed. Este estudo avaliou oportunidades de integração entre requisitos ambientais e econômicos durante etapas iniciais do desenvolvimento de produtos. Como principal ferramenta foi utilizado o Mapeamento de Fluxo de Valor, associando conceitos de manufatura enxuta, Design for Manufacturing and Assembly (DFMA) e Ecodesign, aplicado a um item de mobiliário aeronáutico em material compósito. Os resultados apontam que o tempo total de fabricação poderia ser reduzido em até 43%, além da otimização logística. A forma de construção influencia diretamente os impactos ambientais e oportunidades de utilização de matérias-primas menos agressivas foram apontadas como sugestões. O aspecto visual dos Mapas de Fluxo de Valor facilita a análise das informações e a tomada de decisão na seleção de materiais e processos que minimizem desperdícios e impactos ambientas na manufatura.

"The Office of Mine Safety and Health Research (OMSHR), Spokane Mining Research Division (SMRD), is continuing its High-Energy High-Displacement (HEHD) testing of field-scale shotcrete panels. A test program was developed to determine the relationship between applied force, displacement, and energy for both unreinforced and reinforced shotcrete panels. Reinforcement options consisted of synthetic macro-fibers, sprayed polyurea liners, chain-link fence, welded-wire mesh, and combinations of these products. During testing, photogrammetry was used to measure the geometric changes of the panels, including volume changes and panel cracking. These measurements were correlated with the load and displacement data, allowing visual observation to be related to the applied force and displacement. The test results provide a comparison of the mechanical performance of the various panel types and can be used by the practicing engineer to evaluate installed support based on visual observation of cracking and deformation. Visual assessment of the loading cycle and strength capacity of shotcrete in underground excavations will improve mine safety by providing a means to quantify the stability of installed shotcrete support. INTRODUCTION The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH), Office of Mine Safety and Health Research (OMSHR), Spokane Mining Research Division (SMRD) is continuing research on the behavior of shotcrete when used as the surface support component in mining ground support systems. Ground control safety often depends on supporting, or at least containing, the ground between the rockbolts. Shotcrete and mesh, in various combinations and with other components, are often used to accomplish this (see Figure 1). Maintaining support pressure during ground deformation is key to the performance of these systems, and to ensuring miner safety. However, the toughness of a ground support system–the ability to maintain strength over large deformations–is difficult to quantify. Researchers at SMRD have responded to this deficiency by designing a full-scale test device, described previously by Martin et al. [2015a], and beginning a testing program to assess the behavior of shotcrete surface support reinforced with a variety of products including: fibers, chain-link mesh, welded-wire mesh, spray-on polyurea liners, and combinations of these products. INTRODUCTION The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH), Office of Mine Safety and Health Research (OMSHR), Spokane Mining Research Division (SMRD) is continuing research on the behavior of shotcrete when used as the surface support component in mining ground support systems. Ground control safety often depends on supporting, or at least containing, the ground between the rockbolts. Shotcrete and mesh, in various combinations and with other components, are often used to accomplish this (Figure 1). Maintaining support pressure during ground deformation is key to the performance of these systems, and to ensuring miner safety. However, the toughness of a ground support system–the ability to maintain strength over large deformations–is difficult to quantify. Researchers at SMRD have responded to this deficiency by designing a full-scale test device, described previously by Martin et al. [2015a], and beginning a testing program to assess the behavior of shotcrete surface support reinforced with a variety of products including: fibers, chain-link mesh, welded-wire mesh, spray-on polyurea liners, and combinations of these products. The mining and mineral concentration of Cu-Ni-PGM sulfide ores in South Africa occurs in semiarid regions. The scarcity and availability of water resources in these regions has become one of the biggest challenges facing mineral concentrators.S Owing to this challenge, concentrators have to find ways through which they can manage and control their water usage. Recycling and re-use of process water in mineral concentrators has therefore become common practice. This practice is beneficial in that it reduces reliance on municipal water, harnesses compliance to stringent environmental regulations on water usage, and it also offers a better response to the Sustainable Development Goals. This could however be somewhat concerning to the operator as recirculated water often has higher concentrations of ions compared to fresh or potable water. The unintended change in the process water quality may potentially affect critical aspects of flotation such as the stability of the froth. This has led to the need to find those process water ions that have the greatest impact on froth stability. Thus, this paper investigates the effect of various ions common in process water of a typical Cu-Ni-PGM concentrator on froth stability. Bubble size, water recoveries, foam height, and dynamic froth stability in both twophase and three-phase flotation systems are used as proxies for froth stability. Findings of this study are deemed crucial towards the development of a process water management protocol in sulfidic Cu-Ni- PGM ore concentrators. "In Part 1 of this two-part paper the characteristics of mine disasters and their effects are presented with case studies from coal, metal and non-metal mines leading to an amplification of their causes and opportunities for control. The disasters discussed encompass those which threaten the health and the safety of miners and those which affect the general population. In Part 2 of the paper, which will be published in the November 1995 issue of Natural Resources Forum, the approaches to hazard and disaster control are reviewed with particular attention to laws and regulations to promote health and safety at the workplace, and general welfare in mining communities. Further, a systems approach to disaster control is outlined.The mining industry is one of the three basic industries the other two being agriculture, and wildlife and fisheries. It is the process of mining which makes available the riches of the earth - the energy and mineral resources - to benefit humanity. In fact the progress of the human race through the ages is indelibly attached to prowess in exploiting these riches. The stone, iron and bronze ages are markers not just of a time in history but achievements of monumental proportions in the mining and beneficiation of natural resources. Even in agriculture, the remarkable success stories are associated with the prudent use of mined products to enhance production and productivity. The significance of a thriving mining industry to the wealth and security of a nation is therefore unquestioned.Unfortunately, the public's image of the mining industry is often associated with the mining disasters which receive wide coverage in the local and national media. Mine disasters command tremendous attention because of their infrequent occurrence and the extent of human suffering involved. Whether it is an explosion or a fire, or the opening or closing of a mine, the lives of people are touched by the personal and societal impacts of these events.Courts of inquiry of mining disasters have often concluded that the disaster situation was ever present and could have been detected with diligent search. In addition human error has been identified as one of the most frequent immediate causes for the precipitation of the disaster. For the most part, then, mining disasters are caused by man."
