"Adequate lighting for all mining operations would unquestionably tend to promote both safety and efficiency; this would be true not only for men but also for the animals that man impresses into service in mines. The Markeeta Coal Co. and the Alabama Fuel & Iron Co. both operating mines in Alabama, have found that equipping mine mules with portable electric lights is more efficient, much more humane, and far more safe for both men and animals then the more or less usual method of forcing the animal to do its work essentially in darkness.This report is intended to give the mining industry data, that will aid in trying to bring about safe and efficient operation of mines.The authors desire to thank Charles F. DeBardeleben, president, Fred R. Bell, general manager, Hewett Smith, C. H. Shepherd, and R. A. Sensing, superintendents for the Alabama Fuel & Iron Co.; and Charles F. DeBardeleben, Jr., president, and H. M. House, superintendent for the Markeeta Coal Co., for their cooperation in furnishing the data for this paper.The eight mines operated by the Alabama Fuel & Iron Co. and one operated by the Markeeta Coal Co. in Jefferson and St. Clair Counties, Ala., are the only mines in Alabama where mules are provided with portable electric lights, and there are few if any mines in other States in which this system is in use.These two companies are convinced that equipping all mine mules with good lights decreases underground haulage cost by animals by prolonging the useful life of the animals, increasing their efficiency, lessening haulage wrecks and delays on haulage, and increasing production. Last but not least of the advantages would be the more humane treatment of the animals.The nine mines are developed by slopes along the dip of the coal bed, with double-room entries on 200- to 300-foot centers turned right and left off the slopes and with approximately 1 per cent grade in favor of the loads. Rooms are driven up or diagonally up the pitch from these entries.A surface hoist delivers the empties from the surface to the entry sidetracks at the slope and pulls the loads to the surface. From these sidetracks, mules pull one to four wooden cars, each of which holds 1-1/2 to 2-1/2 tons of coal, deliver the empties to the rooms and entry faces, and pull the loads to the slope sidetracks. The mule haul varies from 100 to 3,000 feet; there are no locomotives or trolley wires in any of these nine mines, seven of which are rated as gassy and two as nongassy by the Alabama state Mining Department."

Twelve years ago, the Director of the United States Geological Survey addressed to the Secretary of the Interior a letter calling attention to the government's need for liquid fuel for naval use and pointing out that the rate of increase in demand was more rapid than the increase in production.' This letter, in a way, inaugurated the policy of public oil-land withdrawals, which was well founded in its primary purpose of protecting the oil industry and highly desirable in its immediate effect of checking the over-development of that day in California. Unfortunately, however, through delays in legislation, this policy may be regarded now as having outlived both its intent and its usefulness. In 1908, the country's production of oil was 178,500,000 bbl., and there was a surplus above consumption of more than 20,000,000 bbl. available to go into storage. In 1918, 10 years later, the oil wells of the United States yielded 356,000,000 bb1.—nearly twice the yield of 1908—but to meet the demands of the increased consumption more than 24,000,000 bbl. had to be drawn from storage. Nor is this all of the brief comparison. In 1918, our excess of imports over exports of crude petroleum was nearly 33,000,000 bbl. whereas in 1908 we exported 3,500,000 bbl., which was net, as we had not begun to import Mexican oil. In this period, the annual fuel-oil consumption of the railroads alone has increased from 16,871,000 to 36,714,000 bbl.; the annual gasoline production from 540,000,000 gal. to 3,500,000,000 gal. This record may be taken not only as justifying the earlier appeal for Federal action, but as warranting deliberate attention to the oil problem of today. Need of Future Supply The position of the United States in regard to oil can best be characterized as precarious. O objetivo deste trabalho é estudar o efeito da composição química e dos parâmetros de lingotamento convencional na ocorrência de trincas superficiais em barras laminadas. Faz-se um estudo dos parâmetros que podem influenciar na formação deste tipo de defeito e uma análise da morfologia de trincas. Com relação à composição química, foi alcançada redução na ocorrência de trincas superficiais em barras laminadas através da adição de Ti e redução do teor de Al no aço. Maior temperatura e menor velocidade de lingotamento correspondem à melhor combinação para alcançar redução da ocorrência desse tipo de defeito.

Joined modeling of stressed state and induced seismicity is a means to join geomechanics with seismic observations. When applied to quantifying rockburst hazard, it provides, on one hand, estimations in terms of mechanics, such as stress concentration, and, on the other hand, in statistical terms of the risk analysis developed in mining seismology. The modeling became possible due to progress in computers and numerical methods. However, despite tremendous increase of computational abilities, the joined modeling is still quite time expensive. To make it available for wide use and real time simulations, there is need to reduce the time cost of its key stages: calculation of stresses, caused by mining, and simulation of seismic events, induced by these stresses. The present work aims to decrease the time cost. The stages are time costly because of the same reason, which is a very large number N (up to millions) of elements, representing rock structure, openings and flaws. This leads to immense computational complexity (roughly of order N2) of conventional accounting for pairwise interactions between the elements. The complexity may be notably reduced, when employing the fact that interactions decrease with growing distance between elements. Specifically, the fast multipole methods (FMM) avoid the complexity N2, by employing translations of far-fields from whole collections of sources. This reduces the complexity to the order 22, where p is the number of terms involved in a single translation, is the number of translations, and is the dimension of the quantity translated. Still, for conventional FMM, the complexity remains too high to routinely perform joined modeling of stresses and seismicity.

Bioleaching, one of the several important processes of biohydrometallurgy is an accepted technique for the extraction of desired metals from sulphide ores. Although the mechanism is well understood, the slow metal extraction rate due to passivating layer and ferric ion precipitation, especially in a typical chalcopyrite leaching, impact negatively on the overall efficiency of the process. Iron precipitates are common in many biohydrometallurgical operations and these precipitates represent the exit route for undesired iron, alkali ions or sulphate ion from the processing circuit. While there have been reports on approaches to slow the formation of these precipitates by manipulation of various operating conditions such as pH, redox potential and temperature, the precipitates become highly significant over the long term in the continuous operation of bioleaching and may render heap impermeable. Although there is evidence supporting the nature of the passivation to be precipitates of iron, their scavenging mode of reducing extraction efficiency is still not well understood. This paper thus discusses iron precipitation in biohydrometallurgical processes, including its formation and significance on bioleach processes. The paper also details the associated passivating species identified with heap bioleaching of sulphide minerals and provides some insight into sorption mechanism that limits metal recovery in a typical bioleach operation. "Dithiophosphate (DTP) collectors have the lowest affinity for sulfide mineral surfaces compared to other common sulfide mineral collectors, such as xanthates and dithiocarbamates. In some cases it has been found that DTP does not adsorb onto the mineral surface at all and yet increases in recoveries and grades are noticed with the addition of DTP. Many studies have investigated the interactive effects of collector mixtures. However, there have been relatively few studies on the interactive effects between frother molecules and collectors. This study investigates the interactions between different types of frothers and sodium diethyl dithiophosphate.The study found that there were large increases in pyrite and galena microflotation recoveries at both pH4 and pH9 when DTP was mixed with small amounts of frother at a constant bubble size, showing that these increases were neither mineral-specific nor pH-specific. The same effect was not present when xanthate was used as a collector. The increases in recovery when using the DTP-frother mixture were similar irrespective of the type of alcohol or polypropylene glycol frother that was used. In an attempt to distinguish the mechanism of enhanced flotation recovery, various supplementary experiments were performed. It was found through adsorption experiments that no DTP was adsorbing on to the mineral surface. Therefore, interactions at the air-water interface were performed. Surface tension and critical coalescence concentration tests showed that, while DTP is a weak surfactant at the air-water interface, it does not have a synergistic effect in the presence of frother. DTP-frother mixtures do, however, show interactions in the froth phase, indicating an interaction in the thin films. It is proposed that there is a DTP-frother interaction on the bubble surface that enhances the rate of film thinning at the 3-phase bubble-particle contact."

This study established a coupled fluid-electromagnetic numerical model to systematically analyzse the effects of molten steel flow, inclusion transport, and temperature gradients on refractory erosion behaviour within an induction-heated tundish. The results demonstrate that increased induction heating power significantly exacerbates both flow-induced erosion and magneto-thermal corrosion of the refractory lining in the channel region. The erosion rate exhibits a linear increase with power, while the wear coefficient follows a power-law relationship. Concurrently, a higher power level intensifies the inclusion collision source term by a factor of ten, substantially promoting inclusion collision, growth, and removal (increasing the removal rate by 14.86%). However, this also leads to a 51.3% reduction in the outlet inclusion particle size. This research provides a quantitative basis for balancing metallurgical benefits (temperature control and improved steel cleanliness) with the longevity-oriented design of refractory linings.

Exploration for high-value massive sulfide deposits on the ocean floor typically commences with a search for chimney fields in appropriate geological settings, followed by collection and assaying of standing chimneys. Individual chimney fields are generally too small in aggregate volume to constitute viable resources in their own right. Unless numerous small fields occur in reasonably close proximity, presence of plentiful sub-seafloor mineralization with acceptable metal tenor is the more likely requirement for potential exploitation. Expensive drilling is required to prove up mounds of collapsed chimneys, or dilatory sheets and veins or replacements of massive/semimassive sulfide (?stockworks? or ?manto?-like bodies) in underlying host rock. Where multiple targets have been defined, as many parameters as possible are desirable to help rank them for drilling.

In surface coal mining, the performance of a shovel through blasted muck is one of the key performance indicators of the blast. Historically, performance has been measured qualitatively based on operator feedback or visuals of the muckpile. More complete shovel data, such as loading times and GPS location, is available from most fleet dispatch systems that are already in place at most truck and shovel operations. With some database and analysis skill, the drill and blast team can take advantage of this data to make targeted improvements to drill and blast designs. An area typically known to cause trouble for shovel operators at this operation are blast boundaries. Blast patterns with and without design changes along the boundaries were studied in this case study. The instantaneous loading times for each shovel pass were analyzed for 75 blasts across two subsequent benches with similar firing direction and shovel paths. The benches were split into three categories: Main body of pattern, boundary with design change, and boundary with no design change. The loading times from the main body of the patterns and where the design change was utilized in the boundary had similar prevalence of good loading times. However, boundary areas without the deign change had approximately 2% more prevalence of poor loading times compared to the main boundary of the pattern. Improving the dig rates through the boundaries up to the average loading time would result in approximately 280 hours taken off the total loading time for one bench. By quantifying the shovel’s performance by GPS location, the drill and blast team can decide how much of a design change is needed, can target precisely only the areas that require it and measure the impact of any changes made

Este trabalho teve como objetivo analisar, através da fractografia, o desempenho de aços inoxidáveis Duplex 2205 soldados por três processos diferentes: FCAW - Flux-Cored Arc Welding (Arame Tubular), o GTAW - Gas Tungsten Arc Welding (TIG), e o SMAW - Shielded Metal Arc Welding (Eletrodo Revestido). A superfície de fratura das amostras foi obtida através de ensaios de tração, nos quais foram registradas as respectivas curvas tensão-deformação completas, que também foram analisadas. Os resultados mostraram que o tipo de influência da solda nas propriedades mecânicas analisadas.

"Coal and coal byproducts produced annually contain a sufficient amount of rare earth elements (REEs) to meet current U.S. demand. The REEs exist in the form of minerals, ion-adsorbed elements associated with clays, and chemically bonded elements within the organic coal matrix or host mineral. Researchers at three universities collaborated to evaluate the effectiveness of existing physical and chemical concentration processes for the recovery of the REEs. The efforts found that physical separation processes can increase the total REE content in the thickener underflow material collected from a Central Appalachian coal cleaning facility from around 300 ppm to values greater than 17,500 ppm on an ash basis. Leaching followed by solvent extraction was found to be the most effective to recover the REEs from coarse middlings materials collected from multiple coal basins, as indicated by recovery values exceeding 80 percent. Based on material characterization data and process evaluations conducted for several potential feed coal sources, economic recovery of the REEs will require byproduct production of both clean coal and REE concentrate using a process flowsheet that is unique for each source. IntroductionRecent studies initiated by the National Energy Technology Laboratory showed that U.S. coals contain significant amounts of rare earth elements (REEs), suggesting that rare earth minerals (REMs) and/or REEs can be produced as byproducts (Ekmann, 2012). According to the report, the richest source of REEs is the Central Appalachian coal. At present, there are 208 coal preparation plants located in the region consisting of areas within the states of West Virginia, Kentucky, Pennsylvania, Virginia, Alabama and Tennessee, with a total capacity of 166,495 t/h, or more than 1 Gt/y (Fiscor, 2014). If only a portion of these plants are retrofitted with advanced separation processes, the U.S. coal industry would become a significant producer of REE concentrates as byproducts. An inherent advantage of becoming a byproduct producer of REEs is that no mining cost needs to be part of the production cost."

"The Safety Pays in Mining web application, developed by the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) Mining Program, helps mines determine the potential costs associated with mining injuries. This web app groups injuries by type, either by the cause of the injury or by the nature of the injury. When the user selects one of over 30 common types of mining injuries, the app provides information on the distribution of costs of workers’ compensation claims for that type of injury. Based on other user inputs, Safety Pays in Mining will estimate the total costs of the selected injuries, including an estimate of additional indirect costs, the estimated impact of total injury costs on mining company profits, and provide some examples of other items (services, equipment) on which companies could spend the savings that result from the prevention of injuries. This paper reviews the Safety Pays in Mining web application by discussing the development of the app, how it is used to show the true costs of mining injuries, and how mines can benefit from using this app. INTRODUCTION Injuries on the job cause pain and suffering. They can also profoundly affect profits and daily operations. In addition to paying direct costs or increased premiums for workers’ compensation insurance, a company might need to pay overtime for other workers to fill an injured worker’s job role, cover training costs for a replacement worker, or divert administrative resources in the wake of an injury. Safety Pays in Mining is a web app that estimates the distribution of these injury costs and assesses the impact that occupational injuries have on a company’s profits. The costs of specific types of occupational injuries in mining are not readily available as mining and insurance companies don’t usually share this information. As a consequence, companies only have cost information based on previous experience with their own employees. Therefore, if a mine never experienced a finger amputation for one of its miners, it would not be aware of the possible costs associated with this type of injury. In addition, injury costs are unique in that the cost distribution is so wide — with half of the injuries in our dataset having mean costs higher than 90th percentile costs — just using the average cost of a specific injury type does not provide adequate information. Some injuries involve immensely high costs, and even though the risk of these high-cost injuries occurring is low, mines need to be aware of their potential impact on their company’s financial health."

Arrium’s OneSteel Whyalla Steelworks in South Australia is a fully integrated plant which operates a single blast furnace. The key operational objective has been to maintain high process availability and stability while maximising the process efficiency and the produced hot metal quality. All ferrous raw material input feeds are sourced exclusively from company iron ore deposits in the nearby Middleback Ranges. The Whyalla blast furnace has mostly operated using a combination of a high percentage of pellet feed, produced in Whyalla, together with screened lump ore.The unique ironmaking challenge has always been to extract the maximum value from the ferrous burden feed available locally. In earlier times, high-grade hematite lump ore was available for both screened lump ore and pellet production. Blast furnace trials from acid to fluxed pellet feed commenced in 1977. The furnace pellet feed has been wholly fluxed since 1981. Many pellet/lump ore feed mixes and significant pellet chemistry composition design changes have been made over the years. These changes have been aimed at best balancing the ferrous burden availability/cost and the optimum reducibility/high temperature melting behaviour of the charged ferrous feed within the blast furnace. In more recent times since 2007, the Whyalla blast furnace operation has transitioned from a hematite based pellet feed to a magnetite based pellet feed while there is an ongoing contest dealing with diminishing absolute quality/increased variability raw material feed inputs.The paper will detail key elements of the Whyalla blast furnace operational philosophy with regards to ferrous feed use and process optimisation. O processo de injeção sob pressão de ligas de alumínio é empregado para a produção de peças diversas, destinadas principalmente à indústria automobilística, com a possibilidade de produzir peças complexas, contendo seções delgadas, e a alta velocidade de produção. O reduzido tempo de ciclo e as elevadas temperaturas envolvidas promovem danos por fadiga térmica na superfície de trabalho das matrizes, que crescem com o aumento da produção até atingirem condições que inviabilizam o uso da matriz. O presente trabalho visou estudar o efeito da nitretação na superfície do material, relacionando-o aos aspectos microestruturais e tensões residuais inseridas durante nitretação. O aço AISI H13, foi tratado para dureza de 45 HRC e posteriormente nitretado sob plasma em diversas condições de temperatura, tempo e composição da atmosfera gasosa. Os resultados obtidos mostraram que as variações dos parâmetros de nitretação afetam os perfis de dureza e de tensões residuais presentes nas camadas nitretadas, bem como os microconstituintes das mesmas. O material nitretado, após ser submetido a temperaturas da ordem de 600°C, apresentou redução no nível de tensões residuais de compressão, ocorrendo processo de alívio de tensões. O mesmo efeito não foi tão fortemente verificado no perfil de dureza do material.

Artisanal mining is a rudimentary activity that today attracts over 30 million people in virtually all developing countries around the world. As the price of gold has steadily increased over the past decade, 15 million people have become involved in extracting this metal in 55 countries. Individuals have switched to mining from primary industrial sectors such as agriculture to increase their income. These workers generally have little capital, low education levels, and no previous experience in mining. Together with a lack of technical support from governments, these factors lead to disorganized and informal mining activities that generate environmental and social chaos. The absence of technical knowledge and capital has caused a proliferation of Gold Ore Processing Centres (GOPCs) around the world established by local entrepreneurs, who provide a way for miners to process their ores using amalgamation for a fee that is relatively low to non-existent. Gold recovery by the independent miners rarely exceeds 30 % and gold-rich tailings are left at GOPC facilities as a form of payment. GOPCs recover around 90 % of the remaining gold using cyanidation, flotation, and amalgamation, without any compensation paid to the miners. In processing these mercury (Hg)-contaminated tailings, Hg cyanide complexes are produced that are dumped into aquatic environments, leading to rapid bioaccumulation of Hg by fish. In the town of Portovelo, Ecuador, the establishment of partnerships between GOPC entrepreneurs and artisanal miners has proven to be successful in forming legal small-mining companies to create more equity and reduce pollution. About 108 GOPCs operate in Portovelo-Zaruma, with 40 % of these still working illegally without proper regulation and permitting. Over 20 % of these GOPCs continue to use grinding, concentrating and amalgamating of the gold, with 58 % performing cyanidation of tailings and/or gravity concentrates, and 15 % combining flotation with cyanidation. About 94 % of the GOPCs concentrate the ore prior to applying amalgamation, which significantly reduces Hg emissions to the environment. Incorporating flotation has given the operators increased skills in mineral recovery, with the side benefit of producing a copper concentrate as added value. Despite these innovations, mineral recovery is still inefficient, and waste management is a major challenge in creating true sustainability in this sector (technical efficiency together with social and environmental responsibilities). Further organization, training and capacity-building are needed. The principles of Lean Manufacturing Methods ("Just in Time" production and "Automation") are suggested as possible techniques to assist small GOPCs to become sustainable. In this concept, a larger mining company can become associated with artisanal miners in a partnership to provide training and investment for exploitation of small deposits that would be infeasible as a single large operation. As well, an International Training Centre for Artisanal Miners (ITCAM) is being established in Portovelo with collaboration of the Government of Ecuador to further enhance and upgrade mining activities in this region. ITCAM will provide artisanal miners with technical, business and environmental training to become responsible small-scale miners. In building this new capacity, ITCAM intends to create an atmosphere of trust to attract private and corporate investors to become partners with artisanal miners.

As productivity in coal extraction demands increase in underground coal mines, the industry is faced with finding new ways to support production without jeopardising safety. In modern mines the capacity and scale of longwall coal extraction has steadily increased to a point that support processes are failing to keep pace. In particular, roadway development is continually placed on the critical path of activities which maintain mine production, so any inefficiency in this area is quickly exposed. Original equipment manufacturers are under immense pressure to modify their machines to be more interconnected with each other, with machine communication and logistical sharing of space becoming a known requirement. This paper looks at the changing trends in mining practice, analysing available technology as well as currently emerging research into hard automation and discusses the need to integrate machinery and processes in order to see increases in productivity and safety.

Introduction This paper describes some of the mineral resources that are tributary to that portion of the Pacific Great Eastern railway included in the Western Mineral Survey District, No. 6, of British Columbia. This district extends 38 miles northerly from Squamish, the ocean terminus of the railway at the head of Howe sound, to Alta lake. Beyond Alta lake the railway continues northerly through two other mineral survey districts: the Central Mineral Survey District No. 3, and the Northeastern District No. 2. District No. 6 includes that section of the Coast Range from which the waters flow southerly towards Howe sound. The division between District No. 6 and District No. 3 is represented by an imaginary line across the summit between the headwaters of the Cheakamus river, flowing south into the Squamish, and the Green river which flows north and empties into the head of Lillooet lake near Pemberton meadows, about 20 miles from Alta lake. History: - The history of the route of the P. G. E. railway dates back to the old Cariboo days when a pack-horse trail traversed the country northerly from Squamish to the Pemberton meadows, and also south-easterly from Squamish to the head of Seymour creek, thence southerly down that creek to the north arm of Burrard inlet.

"Cracking is one of the most serious damages in tunnel linings, which is often observed by in-situ inspection to tunnel engineering. It is difficult to better characterise for the deformations from continua to discontinua by the traditional continuum mechanics due to emerging of crack initiation, crack propagation, and coalescence, at several scales. In this paper, the process of failure that was from micro damage to macro crack in concrete tunnel linings under experimental load conditions, was quantitatively simulated by the combined finite-discrete element method (FDEM). Comparison of the simulating results with that obtained by the full-scale test of concrete lining under different loading conditions in the literature was respectively good agreed and shows that such FDEM technique is appropriate to model the continuousdiscontinuous problems. The present study indicates that the FDEM technique could be benefit to quantitatively evaluate the stability and damage level of tunnel lining system. INTRODUCTIONMost damage to tunnel linings is caused during the construction phase, which can emerge in a form of single macro cracks or even large-scale spalling. The cause of such damage is mostly the occurrence of, either impermissibly large contact stresses resulting from high thrust loads combined with production and installation tolerances in the segments resulting in a geometrical lack of fit (Maidl et al., 2012; Transportation Research Board, Basic Research and Emerging Technologies Related to Concrete Committee, 2006), or unallowable tensile/shear stresses appearing in the tunnel linings under complicated loading conditions (Ansell, 2010). Such a macro failure phenomenon may also be regarded to as a result of growth, coalescence, initiation of microcracks in tunnel linings due to the complicated loading action, and even potentially lead to an instability or collapse of the local or entire tunnel system. Much work has been devoted to investigate for the characters of micro and macro cracks, the influence factors of damage patterns, the settlement of a tunnel, the width, length and density of lining cracks, especially from classifiedly and qualitatively (Wang, 2010; Huang et al., 2013). However, the safety evaluation of tunnel is definitely required to not only inspect in situ, but further also quantify computing and analyzing for tunnel lining systems, so as to provide a global viewpoint of process of the tunnel deformation, which aims to help for subsequent decisions, e.g. controlling traffic flow or immediately repairing task. Additionally, the design of lining thickness and its structural analysis that is mostly determined by previous experience and similar construction examples is also needed to be improved."

Efficient pre-concentration using natural and induced deportment starts with effective blast design. Leveraging these characteristics using Size-Based Grade Engineering® techniques requires detailed understanding and measurement of the particle size distribution (PSD) of the Run of Mine (ROM) ore. In turn, blasts must be designed to optimise fragmentation for the pre-concentration method. To be successful, fragmentation outcomes must be predicted and measured as part of the blast design process to account for the response ranking of the rock mass. The upgrade achieved using Size-Based Grade Engineering® methodologies will rely on the proportion of feed that reports to the screen undersize, so particle size distribution of the feed stock is of paramount importance if the potential benefits are to be achieved and maintained. Measuring actual fragmentation in the ROM ore and comparing with predictions allows the modification of subsequent blast designs to optimise fragmentation for pre-concentration scenarios. Automating this process can deliver significant increases in productivity and mine site profits. This paper discusses the importance fragmentation plays in Size-Based Grade Engineering® and explores technologies and methodologies used to measure it, consistently ensuring the best outcomes.
