During the period 1981 - 1991, Esso Australia and their Joint Venture partners have discovered about 180 MB of liquids (crude and condensate), 60 MB natural gas liquids and 800 - 1000 GCF of gas. A total of 48 wildcat wells were drilled including 12 new pool discoveries drilled from platform facilities. Significant discoveries include the West Tuna, Kipper, Blackback and Terakihi fields. These four discoveries, contribute to 75 per cent of the total reserves discovered in the last decade and were all high-risk plays. The Kipper discovery, in the pre-Latrobe Golden Beach Group top sealed by volcanics, and the Blackback-Terakihi discoveries, located on the present day continental slope in water depths ranging from 300-700 metres are both the result of successful drilling outside the traditional exploration bounds for the basin. During the last decade, Esso and its partners have spent about A$400M on wildcat exploration activity. The exploration success rate, excluding platform based drilling, has been 50 per cent for wildcat wells. On a technical front, the last decade has heralded substantial improvements in seismic data quality. Peak frequency content in seismic data at the Latrobe Group target levels is now double that of the early 1980s. Significant advances have also been made in our understanding of sequence stratigraphy, geochemistry and geohistory of the basin.

"Ethylene has been produced in aqueous solution from CO2 by the electrochemical reduction driven by a natural energy. This process is useful for storing a large amount of the natural energy. In the closed system, the conversion efficiency of CO2 is almost 100%, and the maximum selectivity for the formation of ethylene is more than 70%. On the other hand, the current efficiency for the competitive reduction of water is less than 10%. The electrolysis is practicable under such special conditions as three-phase interface consisting of gas, solution and metal, concentrated solution of potassium halide, low pH and copper or copper halide-confined metal electrode. These requirements are thoroughly examined, and the grounds to reply upon are revealed. A series of chemical apparatuses including an electrolytic cell in a large scale are designed for the ethylene production, which allow us continuously to supply raw CO2 and to extract the product.IntroductionIn connection with the depletion of the petroleum reserve, much attention has been paid to the utilization of natural energies such as sunlight, wind force and waves. However, these energies are always changeable, and some means of storing them are necessary for the common use. Slake durability of rocks is an important property of rock-mass and rock-materials in geotechnical practice. The slake durability of rocks is closely related to their mechanical properties. In this paper, mechanical properties and slake durability tests for weak and clay-bearing rocks from Beypazari Trona Bed in Ankara, were performed in order to assess the slake durability and mechanical properties (especially rock strength) of these rocks as well as to understand the relationship between mechanical properties and slake durability. In performing this relationship, statistical based correlation has been applied.

Currently, underground mining of deeper massive deposits with lower grades, harder rock conditions in high strength environments, entails difficulties in caving, fragmentation and seismicity of the orebody.So far, the use of preconditioning (PC) with hydraulic fracturing (HF) has shown positive results in terms of seismic response and caving performance, while PC combined with explosives aims to weaken the rock mass, causing an additional effect on fragmentation.In particular, mines commonly referred to as ‘supercaves’, operated by caving methods, have the need to integrate mine to plant processes, where rock fragmentation appears as a key tool. In fact, it implies making mining and comminution processes more efficient to the plant and for mines, it justifies the search of innovative solutions in drilling and blasting techniques to precondition the rock mass. The following paper aims to show the feasibility of numerical blast modelling to weaken the rock mass using explosives, mainly through sensitivity analysis applied to designs to minimise bias and uncertainty in the results. It is shown how the presence of structures, their geometry and in situ stresses influence or interfere with the PC method being used.From the work, it is concluded that better knowledge on the application of explosives weakening allows specialists to strengthen numerical models associated with every design and therefore previously validate their applicability, helping to understand complex phenomena such as the propagation of mechanical waves in non-elastic heterogeneous media. In this sense, it is understood that while there are studies (Sanchidrián, Segarra and López, 2006) showing that the transfer of energy in the rock mass could be even greater in a confined environment, the more competent rock mass and higher in situ stresses interfere mostly on the effectiveness of a technique using explosives.CITATION:Gottreux, I, Córdova, E, González, P and Videla, J, 2016. The Putnam Coal Mine, at design capacity, will be the third largest underground bituminous coal mine in the world and will feature the world's longest single flight belt conveyor. Construction is now in process; initial mining will commence in early 1969 and design capacity will be reached in 1971. The Putman Coal Mine reserves are located in south-central West Virginia and contain approximately 27,000 acres of prime Pittsburgh No. 8 coal; reserves are sufficient to support a 3.5 million tpy operation for over 30 years. The mine portal area is located some six miles inland from the Kanawha River. The river loading facility is located approximately 156 miles by way of river from the market.

Water contact angles in the air/water/francolite, fuel oil/water/francolite and fuel oil/water/quartz systems were measured to describe the wetting characteristics of these minerals. It was found that white francolite is more hydrophilic than black and tan francolite both in the absence and presence of fatty acid addition. The contact angle measurement results do not correlate very well with the flotation response and it appears that kinetic aspects of the bubble attachment process play an important role in the francolite-fatty acid flotation system.

In 1991 the uranium spot market price dropped to approximately US$7/Ib U308, a historical low in real terms and the short-term outlook for the industry in the next five years was grim. At this time the Ranger operation was producing uranium concentrate at its design capacity of approximately 3 000 tonnes/year. The loss of two major long-term contracts owing to price and reduced power utility demand due to excess inventories meant that the company could not match production to sales. Continuance at this production level would have resulted in a rapid buildup of product inventory and the tie-up of significant cash reserves. After analysing various options, an innovative operating strategy was devised such that production and sales were approximately balanced without a significant impact on the unit production cost or a long term effect on the plant or operation. A campaign mining/milling operation commenced and approximately 40 per cent of the workforce were retrenched. Multi-skilling of all employees was a critical aspect of ensuring a successful outcome. This paper examines the strategy and reports on the success of the operation two years after the restructuring exercise was effected in November 1991.

An improved technique is described for the accurate determination of melting points of metals in the temperature range 1500' to 2500°C. The improvements consist of gradient heating and refinements in cavity preparation to obtain true black-body conditions. The melting point of hafnium, as determined by this method, is set at 2222°±30°C. This is over 200°C higher than one of the values reported earlier. Discrepancies in the previously reported values for the melting point of hafnium are explained. The melting points of zirconium and titanium are found to be 1855O±15OC and 1668°±10°C, respectively. Reproducibility of results was ±3OC. PRIMARILY, this report is being made to correct a 1975o±25oC1 value for the melting point of hafnium, and to present an improved method for melting point determination. As a matter of interest, the technique was also applied to determining the melting point of zirconium and titanium. There is a wide difference in the melting point of hafnium as reported by competent investigators. DeBoer and Fast' reported a value of 2230°±500C, and later work of McPherson, as reported by Aden-stedt, placed the melting point at 1975o±25oC. Zwikker" calculated that the melting point was 2430°C. In resolving this discrepancy, improvements were made in the procedure for determining the melting points of refractory metals in the range 1500" to 2500°C. Special techniques are necessary to determine the melting point of these metals accurately. Since the metals oxidize in air above 900oC, the determinations must be carried out in an inert gas or vacuum. Also, every known refractory contaminates them to some extent. In addition, the attainment of true black-body conditions is always difficult. DeBoer and Fast actually determined the melting point of Hf-Zr as-deposited iodide process alloys and extrapolated to 100 pet Hf. McPherson employed a tungsten wire suspension similar to that described by Schramm, Gordon, and Kaufmann,1 and used hafnium metal produced by the iodide process. There was no apparent reason for the wide spread in melting points, since the quality of the metal was very good and the work was under the direction of highly competent investigators. Retracing some of this work revealed one understandable error in the case of hafnium, and led to development of an improved technique for determining melting points of reactive metals in the range 1500" to 2500°C. Material Crystal bar hafnium, zirconium, and titanium were used for this work, with analyses as shown in Table I. The hafnium was of the highest purity that has been prepared, though not as pure as the zirconium and titanium. At the instigation of the Pittsburgh Area Office of the AEC, a special lot of Hfo2 was purified, converted to the tetraflouride, and bomb-reduced with calcium, all at the Iowa State College Laboratories. This crude hafnium metal was then refined by the iodide process at the Foote Mineral Co. All specimens were cut with a Sic wheel, ground, pickled, and dried carefully before use. Procedure General Tungsten Suspension Method—In this method, a small specimen is suspended by a fine tungsten wire in a slender, induction-heated tungsten or tantalum cylinder, all under vacuum. The melting point is determined by heating the specimen slowly while observing it with an optical pyrometer focused upon a portion of the specimen that radiates as a black body. This means that there should be no reflected radiation, either from colder objects near the pyrometer or from hotter surfaces. The induction heater would be the only hotter object and, if it is slender enough, the specimen will attain the same temperature. Often a slender hole is drilled into the specimen as a source of black-body radiation. This was the general method used by McPherson in obtaining his value of 1975°C for the melting point of hafnium. At Pasminco Mining's South concentrator. which was commissioned in 1952. an expansion. modernisation and efficiency improvement program commenced in 1986 with a coarse ore stockpile and grinding circuit expansion. the replacement of small flotation cells and the upgrading of reagent mixing and metering equipment. The program continued with the installation of a TDC 3000 based process control system (1988) and concentrate thickeners (1990). By mid-1991 a further grinding expansion and the installation of zinc flotation feed regrind ball mills and zinc recleaner column cells will be complete. leaving the use of ceramic disc fillers and development of process control strategies as probably the remaining major avenues for improved process efficiency at present.

For decades, natural fibers have been studied as an economical and environmentally viable alternative to use instead of some types of synthetic fibers, for example fiberglass. To find the best way to make composites, the investigations shall be under various configurations, which is extremely important to understand the potentialities and facilities. To aim the comparison of impact performance of epoxy matrix composites reinforced with ramie fabric, the composites were produced by two different methodologies: under pressure and vacuum. The results show that the composites produced under pressure have greater resistance to both the Charpy and Izod Impact than under vacuum conditions.

SUDBURY ore processed by International Nickel Co. of Canada Ltd. was recovered for many years as two mill concentrates, one primarily of copper, and the other mixed pentlandite-pyrrhotite, But, Since iron content of the nickeliferous pyrrhotite concentrate was ten times its nickel value, capacity of smelting was limited by the need for slagging the excess iron. A process for recovering the iron con- tent was developed after some years of research and a $20-million plant was constructed to employ the new method. Built near Copper Cliff, Ont., the plant started operation early in 1956, scheduled for separate treatment of 365,000 tons of pyrrhotite each year. It is only the first unit of an installation which will have a capacity of more than 1 million tons per year of pyrrhotite. By early 1958, production totaled more than 200,000 long tons of 68 pct Fe pellets containing 0.003 pct P, 1.5 pct SiO2, 0.01 pct S, and 0.15 pct Ni.

The production of strontium (Sr) metal from its oxide via an aluminothermic process under 1–5 mbar pressure was examined in this study. SrO of 99%purity by weight was used in the experiments. The effects of stoichiometry and the duration of the process on the efficiency ratio of the metallic strontium were examined. The effects of functional additives (BaO, CaO, CaC2) were also examined. Characterization was carried out using X-ray diffraction spectrometry (XRD), atomic absorption spectrometry (AAS) and flame photometry techniques. The highest Sr efficiency ratio obtained was 96.89% in the experiment conducted at 1250 °C with 300% Al stoichiometry and 300% BaO stoichiometry.

Mine design and selection of ore processing capacity depend upon a correct estimate of the grade-tonnage distribution. The estimate must reflect what can be recovered and processed. The McCoy/Cove operation in central Nevada, USA, is a gold and silver mine. Case studies of recoverable reserve estimation for gold and silver were made using multiple indicator kriging and the log-affine variance correction. From this model, the grade-tonnage distribution was constructed. Optimal pits were generated by utilizing the distribution, and the results were compared with the pit generated by ordinary kriging. Studies indicate that the proposed method for multi-metal recoverable reserve estimation is more accurate than ordinary kriging in terms of both tons and the grade. Using recoverable reserves for mine design will maximize global recovery of mineral resources.

Historically the hydrogen fluoride laden fume emitted from the electrolytic cells in the aluminium reduction process is further treated in pulse jet dust collectors. These dust collectors act as dry scrubbers performing two duties: adsorbing the gaseous fluoride emitted from the cells onto alumina dust; and collecting the alumina dust minimising particulate and fluoride emissions to the environment.Patented StarBag (TM) technology has been used in aluminium smelters in Australia as a means of increasing the dust collection and fluoride scrubbing capacity of existing collectors. This technology provides an alternative to major capital equipment upgrade where increased capacity is required, and potentially lowers the production cost per tonne of aluminium where capacity limitations are being realised and production expansion is required. This paper presents the findings of on-site pilot scale, and full production scale comparative tests, highlighting the operational and variable differences observed utilising the Star-Bag(TM) technology at Boyne Smelters Ltd in Australia. The results illustrate how this technology can be utilised to increase the hydrogen fluoride scrubbing efficiency and dust collection capacity of existing capital equipment.

Tripoli is a naturally occurring, very finely divided form of silica found chiefly in some midwestern and southeastern states and used commercially as fillers and abrasives. Definitions Tripoli is a microcrystalline, finely particulate, more or less friable form of silica that appears to be the product of leaching of siliceous limestone or calcareous chert. The term was originally applied to a deposit near Seneca, MO, that resembled material of that name found near Tripoli In North Africa (Hovey, 1894). The two deposits were subsequently found to have different physical characteristics -the North African tripoli, now called tripolite, is a diatomite, composed of the siliceous skeletons of microscopic marine plants called diatoms; the Missouri tripoli contains no diatom remains. The term tripoli, however, continued to be used for the Missouri material and is now applied in a general way to most silica deposits similar to it in characteristics and geologic origin. In commercial trade tripoli is commonly understood to designate material from the Missouri-Oklahoma field; silica from southern Illinois, the other major producing area, is referred to commercially as amorphous silica. Each term, however, may be used commercially for material, regardless of place of origin, that has the characteristics or uses commonly ascribed to the material from one or the other major producing area. For example, in the commodity price listings, Engineering & Mining Journal routinely lists under Tripoli, prices "f.o.b. Elco, IL" and "f.o.b. Seneca, MO, and Rogers, AR," and under Silica, amorphous, prices "f.o.b. IL," and "f.o.b. bierks, AR." Amorphous silica, the commercial designation given to southern Illinois tripoli, is, like the term tripoli, a misnomer. Mineralogically, the southern Illinois deposits are composed of microcrystalline quartz, and no amorphous material has been detected during X-ray and scanning electron microscope investigations (Leamnson, Thomas, and Ehrlinger, 1969; Thomas et al., 1970; Keller, 1978). Soft silica is another term that has been applied to Illinois and Tennessee tripoli, presumably to distinguish it from the more compact Missouri material. It has also been used in the ceramic trade to distinguish tripoli from "hard" silica, or silica flour, produced by pulverizing silica sand (Heinz, 1937). Rottenstone, produced commercially in Pennsylvania, is similar to tripoli in that a major constituent is finely particulate silica, and its uses are much the same as those of Tripoli-as abrasives and fillers. The origin of rottenstone also is similar to that of tripoli-decomposition of a siliceous sedimentary rock. The parent rock is defined as a siliceous limestone (Gary, McAfee,, and Wolf, 1972; Thrush, 1968) or as shale. Heinz (1937) quotes a brief statement describing the Pennsylvania deposits -"a black impure shaly limestone grading into black shale"-but does not identify the source of the statement. For convenience, rottenstone is included with tripoli in the reporting of production statistics in US Bureau of Mines (USBM) Minerals Yearbooks. Other materials that have been called tripoli include siliceous deposits in San Bernardino County, California (USBM Minerals Yearbooks, 1934-1941) and in Nevada (Chandler, 1960). These, however, differ in composition and/or origin from tripoli and, therefore, should not be identified by the name tripoli.

O sopro de ar quente representa uma parcela significativa da energia do processo de um alto-forno. Os regeneradores são os equipamentos responsáveis pela elevação da temperatura do ar soprado via ventaneiras. O presente trabalho aborda uma diagnose de eficiência energética realizada nos regeneradores do Alto-Forno 3 da Usiminas. Contempla uma avaliação detalhada nos parâmetros de combustão envolvidos, sendo identificados diversos pontos para melhoria da eficiência energética do processo. Assim, foi proposto um plano de trabalho objetivando explorar estas oportunidades. Os resultados obtidos garantiram uma maior estabilidade nos controles operacionais, refletindo numa melhora significativa do consumo de combustíveis e possibilitando uma redução média de 44,1 Mcal/tgusa.

El presente trabajo describe el proceso aurífero con polvo y zinc desarrollado en la mina Algamarca a través de cuatro procedimientos: Precipitación con polvo de zinc o MEC (Merrill Crowe), carbón en Pulpa o CIP, carbón en Columna o CIC, y la lixiviación en Rumas o LIR. La finalidad de su aplicabilidad es determinar cuál es método más adecuado para la extracción del oro dentro del marco técnico-económico. En ese sentido, la evaluación se dio entre el período de 1989 y 1990, donde se operó con el proceso denominado Carbón en Lixiviación o CIL y se aplicó los métodos MEC y CIP. De acuerdo a esto, los procesos últimos se ajustan a las características propias de los minerales existentes en el yacimiento. Sin embargo, es conveniente utilizar el proceso LIR en los minerales de la veta Leona y donde no hay acceso para el transporte del mineral en camiones hasta la planta de lixiviación. Asimismo, la elección del proceso a emplear en una planta de lixiviación debe resultar de una adecuada evaluación de todos los factores que influyen en los resultados de la operación.

Each year more than 400 coal miners are injured (fatal and non-fatal) by rock falling from between or around roof supports. Many of these injuries could be prevented by the installation of roof screen (wire mesh). However, many coal mines may be reluctant to use roof screen because of the added cost. The goal of this study was to determine the potential saving in workers? compensation (WC) premiums that could be achieved due to a reduction in rock fall injuries after roof screening. The WC rate-setting methods utilized by IL and KY were investigated in this study. Using actual data obtained from MSHA, national and state WC bodies and individual insurance companies (e.g. average cost per injury, loss cost rate, number of injuries per year, number of injuries preventable each year with roof screening), hypothetical mines (representing two mine sizes: 67 and 150 employees) were constructed with realistic ranges for estimates of injuries and WC premium costs. Using each state?s actual WC rate-setting formulas, total savings in WC costs after a three-year period were determined. Across both states, savings in WC premiums ranged from 1.8% to 14.6% when injuries were reduced by 10% to 20%. Additionally, an economic analysis was performed for an existing mine consisting of 67 employees. For this mine, the annual cost of a roof screening program was estimated at $240,000. If the screening prevented 13 ?struck by? WC claims over a 3-year period at this mine, the reduction in WC premiums alone could pay for the entire screening program.
