An Early Proterozoic orogenic terrane of metasedimentary and metaigneous rocks underlies Nebraska, Kansas, and Missouri. Middle Proterozoic epizonal terranes of anorogenic granite and rhyolite, a known metallogenic province partly exposed in southeastern Missouri, overlap the orogenic terrane on the south. These Proterozoic terranes, covered by less than 1,000 meters of Phanerozoic strata, contain a virtually untapped source of mineral wealth and are one of the last frontiers for geologic exploration in the continen-tal United States. Petrographic study of subsurface samples is a powerful tool in the identification of favorable host rocks for a variety of ore deposits.

The retreatment of secondary tailings for platinum group metals recovery presents a range of potential challenges, which vary depending on the nature of the original ore and the type of pretreatment it was subjected to. These challenges include the prevalence of ultrafine particles, which promote slimes coatings on valuable minerals, hinder bubble-particle attachment, increase pulp viscosity, and lead to higher gangue entrainment; surface oxidation of minerals, which alters their floatability; and the presence of deleterious gangue minerals and residual platinum group metal species that are inherently difficult to recover by flotation. This study compares the batch flotation performance across a range of tailings samples from the eastern and western limbs of the Bushveld Complex. A complementary mineralogical analysis was conducted to gain deeper insights into mineral behaviour. The paper evaluates these findings to identify the key factors contributing to poor platinum group metal performance.

The: mysterious Lake Erie price for iron ore, established each spring, determines the maximum price that will be paid during the following season for ore of Mesabi Non-Bessemer base grade. This price is important to the ore producers, hut since most of the ore in the Lake Superior district is owned or controlled by consuming interests, the really important question to them is not the price of ore but how much it will cost them to mine and transport their season's requirements to their furnace plants. However, a few million tons are actually sold each year, and considerable quantities are traded for mixing purposes, and the negotiations lor these sales and trades usually begin with some reference to the Lake Erie price. There is no difficulty with the Lake Erie price itself or with the manner in which it is established, but the system prescribed for determining the values of ores that are not exactly base grade is incomplete. The Lake Erie price takes into consideration only the iron and phosphorus contained in the ore, but when the ore producer is negotiating a sale or trade, he is confronted by the fact that his ore must he studied and the price adjusted, not only on the basis of the iron and phosphorus analyses, as specified by the Lake Erie price, but also on the basis of silica! alumina, manganese, structure, etc. The vague and unsatisfactory methods used in making these adjustments bear some relation to the manner in which the ore is supposed to act in the blast furnace. The ore producer may not understand all of the idiosyncrasies of the blast furnace, but if the smelting-plant operators have a system more accurate than the Lake Erie price method for determining the relative values of different ores, why not pass this information on to the ore producers, so that they can make use of it and perhaps modify their practice in such a manner as to benefit both themselves and their customers? There is a lack of understanding and appreciation between these two groups that may, to some extent, be unavoidable, but in the interests of efficiency and conservation rules that are more accurate and complete than the Lake Erie price method in use at the present time should be established for the guidance of the ore producers. Recently a paper was read before the Eastern States Blast Furnace and Coke Oven Association, by Mr. G. W. Hewitt, Manager Production, Blast Furnace and Coke Oven Department, Wheeling Steel Corporation, in which he explained how his company determines the relative values of different grades of Non-Bessemer ore. This is a very important paper, perhaps not so much on account of the actual calculation methods described as because of the fact that premiums and penalties are shown on Non-Bessemer ores for silica, alumina, phosphorus, and manganese. The 1943 designation of districts for the Transactions† has caused some confusion because of the elimination of the West Central Texas district and the allocation of the counties of this district to the North Texas district and the North Central Texas district. The North Central Texas district as herein defined includes the counties of Brown, Callahan, Cole-man, Comanche, Coryell, Eastland, Erath, Fisher, Hamilton, Hood, Jones, Lampasas, Mills, Nolan, Palo Pinto, Parker, San Saba, Shackelford, Stephens, Stonewall, Summerville, Taylor, Throckmorton and Wise. These counties as listed are the counties of District 7B, State Railroad Commission. This district covers the south central crest and the west flank of the Bend flexure north of the Llano uplift. The west flank of the Bend flexure is on the east boundary of the Permian Basin of West Texas. The North Texas district, District No. 9, State Railroad Commission, includes the counties of Archer, Clay, Cooke, Foard, Hardeman, Jack, Knox, Montague, Wichita, Wilbarger and Young. The area of this district covers the crest and south flank of the Red River uplift and the north central crest of the Bend flexure. The greater part of the oil and gas produced in the past from the North Central Texas district has been from Pennsyl-vanian strata. Some oil and gas has been produced from the lower Permian (by the latest selection of the Pennsylvanian-Permian boundary') and minor amounts from the Mississippian and Ordovician sediments. Increasingly important quantities of oil and gas are to be expected from the older sediments by deeper development in proven fields and by new discoveries. Most of the oil and gas in the district has accumulated in localized, well-defined structural traps in limestone and sandstone reservoirs and in traps due to stratigraphic changes in sedimentation, mainly porosity traps in limestone and sandstone lenses, both usually associated with some structural feature. The Stripper Well Premium Plan as adopted by the office of the Federal Price Administrator has been an aid to the producers of stripper wells. The producers are pleased to receive the subsidy to prolong the plugging of wells, but they are not too pleased with the subsidy plan in principle. Most independent operators are in favor of, and think they are entitled to, an increase in the market price for oil. The price is not adequate to meet the requirements of the average independent operator with the continued advance in production, development and wildcatting costs. Old and new pipe lines for oil and gas leading out of the state are removing reserves at an alarming rate. Curves showing the rate of discovery versus production and pipe-line deliveries in and out of the state make a cross that sooner or later will be fatal to the state. Wildcatting not only needs a price increase but every other available incentive and encouragement.

This paper demonstrates, using the results of an unusually complete industrial test sequence, what the various interactions are between grind size, collector dosage, and frother type. While particle size is universally acknowledged to be important in optimizing industrial copper sulfide rougher flotation circuits, many of the various interactions that do occur at the industrial level with particle size are still being identified and/or quantified. This study also presents, in a consistent manner, the changes in flotation kinetics that occur as a function of particle size, in a typical industrial circuit along with some insights as to how flotation operators can optimize rougher circuit performance.

The Edikan mine in Ayamfuri, Ghana, faces economic challenges and community resistance due to its proximity to residential areas, particularly concerning blasting operations. Controlled blasting trials using air deck applications were conducted to address community concerns by minimizing environmental impacts and explosive costs. This method involves utilizing an air gap within blast holes to prolong the action of shock waves on the rock mass, enhancing crack formation and reducing rock movement. The trial project at the Edikan open pit gold mine aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of air deck blasting in reducing ground vibrations and overpressures, and to assess its impact on blast performance and economics in the prevailing geological conditions of meta-sediment and hard granite rocks. Results indicated lower Peak Particle Velocity (PPV) and Peak Sound Pressure Levels (PSPL) values in the air-decked blasts. Additionally, more uniform rock fragmentation and enhanced blast economics were achieved. Explosive costs were reduced by 20–24%, saving $0.97 to $2.24 per hole depending on the rock type. Overall blasting costs per volume decreased to $0.54 in granite and $0.48 in meta-sediment compared to conventional methods.

AN inclined shaft is usually more difficult to sink than a vertical shaft, yet it is often chosen because of the subsequent saving in cross-cuts required to reach an inclined ore body. This paper briefly discusses the factors which led to the choice of an incline and then describes the operations involved in the preparatory work and in the sinking. These operations included a programme of mining out the underground facilities and installing the structures required for a hoist-room, cable-raise, waste-pass, ore pass, two sets of skip dumps, and a collar station equipped with counterbalanced drop-rails. The shaft was sunk 1,000 feet and four stations were cut, each with loading pockets. As the sinking progressed, the rock changed from hard porphyries and dense cherts to blocky limestones and earthy rubble. These conditions called for a change in methods and it is to the red it of the shaft-sinking crew that they overcame the new difficulties as the shaft progressed, while maintaining a satisfactory monthly advance. The section mined out was nine feet six inches by seventeen feet overall. This gave room for three compartments: two skip compartments four feet three inches by five feet nine inches inside the timber, to handle two-ton skips, and a manway three feet six inches by five feet nine inches. The sinking began on December 16th, 1941, and was completed on February 15th, 1943.

In the froth flotation process the detrimental effect of slimes on the froth flotability of valuable minerals has long been known.1 Work by Aplan2 on the froth flotation of coal has shown that the presence of clay slimes causes loss in flotation selectivity, and recovery of combustibles. Obviously then the presence of clay slimes to any great extent in the froth cell feed in a coal preparation plant is undesirable. This problem is exacerbated in plants treating raw 600 um (28#) by zero material due to the variation in flotation with size. The net effect of this phenomenon in a bank of cells treating raw minus 600 µm (28#) material s that by the time adequate flotation of the coarsest size fractions has occurred the finer sizes are already producing undesirable high ash material, which often leads to unacceptable overall quality. Reduction in aeration rate and/or chemical addition to combat this, further decreases the flotation rate of the coarsest fraction leading to heavy losses of coarse low ash coal to the tailings. The above mentioned characteristics formed a key aspect of the fine coal circuitry design at Elk Run Coal Company in Sylvester, WV. The plant was designed to produce compliance steam coal (less than 1.20 lbs. S02/million b.t.u.) Desliming ahead of the froth flotation was included, as the slimes in the plant feed were clay rich, had very high ash levels, and low potential recovery. Lab testwork had also shown that poor selectivity would be expected if raw minus 600 um (28#) material was froth floated.

Results of thermodynamic computations have been presented for reactions occurring in the process of segregation roasting of oxide nickel ores to describe more accurately the mechanism of the process. Under conditions of laboratory-scale roasting in combination with close-circuit flotation flow-sheets and magnetic separation, a recovery of 80-82% of nickel into 8 to 10% Ni concentrate and a recovery of up to 66% of cobalt was achieved. Process conditions have been selected for processing of both high-iron and high-magnesium ores. The feasibility of conversion of 94-98% of nickel and cobalt into solution by oxidizing pressure leaching with sulfuric acid has been demonstrated. It has been substantiated that it is reasonable to introduce double-stage segregation roasting.

"The aim was to investigate stable pillar design procedures currently in use on chrome and platinum mines, subject them to a critical appraisal, and review some of the alternatives proposed in the literature. It is concluded that these pillar design methodologies suffer from drawbacks that can be detrimental to the mining industry and that an improvement is essential.It was decided that the increased availability of analytical models and failure criteria could be exploited to update the empirical to an analytical/empirical method. The proposed methodology adopted FLAC2D simulations using the Hoek-Brown failure criterion to calculate full stress-deformation curves for typical pillars. The mine stiffness concept was introduced to determine the pillar load, integrating the influence of the pillar and strata stiffness and mining geometry.The proposed methodology was calibrated by comparing experimental and predicted deformations and failure depth of pillars in one hard-rock mine. The conclusion was that the methodology is an improvement over the one currently in use. An improved factor of safety is given by the intersection point of curves for the stiffness of the system and the pillar strength. IntroductionThe paper describes part of the findings of a PhD thesis (Kersten, 2016) on an alternative stable pillar design methodology. This publication contains sufficient information to implement the method for further interpretation and testing. A detailed comparison of measured and predicted data is dealt with in the thesis, and the results show that there is promise in the methodology.The design of stable pillars in mining is of fundamental importance, not only in the Bushveld Complex mines but throughout the mining industry. Wherever mining occurs, pillars are formed at some stage and it is essential to predict their behaviour, i.e. whether they will burst, yield, or remain stable. Although of crucial importance, pillar design still suffers from major shortcomings and weaknesses."

O presente trabalho propõe-se a analisar a influência do amortecimento estrutural inerente de tais materiais submetidos a perturbações estáticas e dinâmicas as quais afetam as características de resposta. A importância deste trabalho insere-se no contexto do controle de vibrações de sistemas de engenharia. Para tanto, é empregada uma técnica de modelagem baseada em elementos finitos. A análise numérica é desenvolvida utilizando a Teoria da Deformação Cisalhante, a qual é implementada em um elemento Serendipity retangular contendo oito nós. O amortecimento é incluído empregando o modelo histerético. As respostas dinâmicas são representadas por funções de resposta em freqüência e autovalores complexos. Simulações numéricas são realizadas visando quantificar os níveis de amortecimento obtidos no tocante às vibrações transversais de placas retangulares e verificar a possibilidade de se aumentar tal amortecimento.

The cyanidation of copper containing gold ores results in the co-dissolution of copper along with gold. Copper dissolution results in elevated cyanide consumption that may make the treatment of the gold ore uneconomic. Copper-cyanide species in gold mill effluents may increase the environmental toxicity of the gold mill solutions. The objective of this study was to examine the use of solvent extraction to recover the copper cyanide species from gold mill effluents. Solvent extraction with Cognis (formerly Henkel) reagents LIX 79 and LIX 7950 was studied. Excellent extraction of copper and cyanide was achieved using pH control in extraction. Copper and cyanide may be stripped from the reagents using basic eluants. Various routes for copper and cyanide recovery from the strip solution were studied. Excellent results were obtained using electrowinning in both divided (Nation membrane) and undivided cells. Cyanide recovery was obtained by AVR treatment of a bleed stream from electrowinning. Full results of solvent extraction, copper and cyanide recovery are reported.

In secondary copper smelting as it is performed at Hüttenwerke Kayser plant in Lünen, tin-and lead-containing flue dusts are produced as intermediate products. These flue dusts are further processed in a hearth furnace. Followed by certain refining operations a saleable tin-lead-alloy is produced. Even though the hearth furnace technology has been in use for this purpose for a long time still its performance undergoes changes in search for optimum processing conditions regarding to the increasing complexity of the raw materials and tightening economical and ecological boundaries. The use of modern statistical tools for the calculation of accurate mass balances is demonstrated for the tin-lead hearth furnace. These reliable mass balances are the basis for any further modelling of the process with the aim of optimization. Incorporating metallurgical knowledge and experience as well as different mathematical modelling techniques, further studies are planned in which the recoveries of valuable and minor elements and their dependency from various process parameters are examined. The aim of this modelling is to optimize the recoveries of the valuable elements, to minimize the energy consumption and the processing costs and thus to keep the process competitive in a harsher economical and ecological surrounding. The modelling principles are transferable to other metallurgical operations and are especially suited for ill-defined pyrometallurgical processes.

Cast multicrystalline silicon ingots are widely used in photovoltaic manufacturing. A key issue to achieve high solar cell efficiencies is to attain an optimized temperature field during directional solidification (DS) process. This paper reports numerical investigation of multicrystalline silicon (mc-Si) ingot production using two major types of DS furnace. Specific examination is made on thermal distribution, interface shape and stress field. Evaluation is performed for the applicability of thermal system design to reduce thermal stress, improve crystal quality and enhance energy efficiency. The effects of procedure parameters and geometric configuration on temperature distribution are discussed as well to provide the viable solutions for systems optimization.

In an attempt to replace the traditional cyanide process of extracting gold, a new technology using ammoniacal solutions has been developed. In this study, the electrochemical behavior of gold in ammoniacal solutions at temperatures above 100°C has been investigated. An electrochemical cell in an autoclave has been introduced to carry out this study. The system consists of a gold working electrode, a platinum counter electrode, and an external saturated calomel electrode (SCE) which is connected to the autoclave system through a Birch wood plug. Techniques used in this study included potentiodynamic polarization, galvanostatic polarization, cyclic voltammetry, and Tafel polarization. The electrochemical reaction mechanisms governing the dissolution process are presented.

Longwall face-to-face equipment transfers or moves are, for many companies, the largest single source of non-productive time in a longwall mining system. Detailed planning and resourceful thinking are paramount for economical, safe, and timely longwall moves. New equipment and innovative techniques are frequently tested in order to reduce overall move time. Determining the cost effectiveness of these ideas is difficult since the decision is influenced by many subjective factors. A project scheduling simulation model of the longwall move process was developed in order to analyze and assess the economic viability of innovative transfer methods and equipment. The model provides a project duration frequency distribution and lists of critically indexed activities and paths. It compares the monetary savings from reduced transfer time and capital costs for several innovative ideas.

"About 1905, a plant was constructed at C1ayburn, in the Lower Fraser valley, 4'5 miles east of Vancouver, to process shales from Sumas mountain into heavy clay products. In time, mining operations were found to be more favourable on the opposite side of the mountain, and by 1913 a plant, which soon became the centre of activities, was completed at Kilgard. Destroyed by fire in 1949, the plant was rebuilt on modern lines, and a second plant was established at Abbotsford, six miles to the west. The Company, from its beginning, has grown with development of the Province. In recent years, operations have kept abreast of latest developments, particularly in materials handling. Latest innovation has been the complete conversion of fuel from Bunker C oil to natural gas. In 1957 the Company became associated with Harbison Walker Refractories, Limited, a leader in its field in the United States, and its title was changed from Clayburn Company, Limited, to Clayburn-Harbison, Limited. Currently, the Kilgard plant produces sewer pipe, agricultural tile, and flue liner; the Abbotsford plant, refractories and facebrick. Improvement of products and development of new ones are tasks of a recently-completed testing and research laboratory.Almost all ware produced is marketed in Western Canada or Washing-ton State. The Vancouver area absorbs the bulk of structural clay products."
