Production of magnesium metal in the United States during the past decade has increased from less than 600,000 lb. in 1928 to more than 4,800,000 lb. in 1938.1 The growing industry has stimulated interest in methods of production and in sources of raw material. All of the present domestic production is from brines. However, the availability of large tonnages of magnesite in the state of Washington, together with the possibility of cheap power, have created interest in the utilization of magnesite for the production of magnesium metal as well as for other purposes. Magnesite, the carbonate of magnesium (MgCO3), usually is associated with limestone (CaC03) and dolomite (MgCO3. CaC03). It occurs in crystalline and microcrystalline (sometimes termed amorphous) forms.2 The more common crystalline mineral is found in various shades of white, gray, yellow and brown, the colors being due to impurities, chiefly iron. Magnesite has a hardness of 3.5 to 4.5 and a specific gravity of 3.0 to 3.1. It forms rhombohedra1 crystals in the hexagonal system, having a vitreous, pearly luster. The quarries and mines of the Northwest Magnesite Co. near Chewelah, Wash., are large producers of magnesite for refractories. The deposits are extensive, some veins being hundreds of feet wide. The boundaries of the veins are indefinite, and the magnesite is interfingered with dolomite. Calcite, talc, serpentine, quartz and shale are disseminated through the deposits. The quality of the ore cannot be determined by appearance or by simple tests; chemical analysis is required. These features make it difficult to determine the boundaries or total quantity of workable ore.3 Only the higher-grade ores are mined, and a considerable proportion of the magnesite content is discarded by hand-sorting and log-washing methods. After calcining, the sorted product meets the specifications for usual refractory material, as it contains approximately 81 per cent MgO, 7 per cent SiO2, 6 per cent CaO and 6 per cent Fe203 + A1203. A sample of the reject material had the following analysis after calcining: 65.4 per cent MgO, 6.3 CaO, 21.1 SiO2 and 6.5 R2O3. The percentage reported as R2O3 includes compounds whose chlorides are acid-soluble but give precipitates in ammoniacal solution that are ignited and weighed. The more common constituents are Fe2O3, A1203 and TiO2. The sorted magnesite product is not the best grade. even for refractory purposes, and leaves much to be desired for a reduction process. The rejected material contains a large proportion of magnesite. It is apparent that an effective concentration method would yield a higher recovery and a better product. Electric utility response to certain amendments of the Clean Air Act has resulted in a production of several types of alkaline coal combustion byproducts. Alkaline combustion byproducts are gaining increasing usage for acid mine drainage mitigation as research leads to a better understanding of their beneficial applications. Since January of 1997, Mettiki Coal Corporation has been injecting alkaline flue gas desulfurization material from Virginia Power's Mt. Storm Unit #3 wet limestone scrubber into abandoned portions of the active Mettiki mine. This paper provides an overview of the key design, transportation, regulatory, and environmental issues faced in the project.

"Rare earth intermetallic compounds are utilized commercially as magnetic and battery materials, electron gun electrodes, etc. Several of these intermetallics will be briefly discussed. There are many other rare earth intermetallic compounds which are not utilized industrially but have unusual properties which are of fundamental interest and may have future technological applications. Several of these materials are discussed as well.INTRODUCTIONTens of thousands of rare earth intermetallic compounds exist, but physical properties (primarily their magnetic behaviors), other than their crystal structures have been measured for only a small percentage of these materials. Among these are the commercially important compounds: Nd2Fe14B, and the SmCo5 – Sm2Co17 family – well known high strength permanent magnets; (Tb0.3Dy0.7)Fe2, Terfenol-D, a giant magnetostrictive material; LaNi5Hx a critical component of the rechargeable Ni metal hydride batteries; and LaB6 an electron emitter. There are, however, many other intermetallic compounds which are not utilized industrially, but none-the-less, exhibit interesting, and sometimes, exotic physical properties which are of fundamental interest and may have some future technological significance. These include: the giant magnetocaloric effect compounds Gd5Si2Ge2 and La(Fe13-xSix)Hy; the RCu and RAg families of ductile intermetallics; the mixed intra-lanthanide (R,R')Al2 compounds in which magnetic transitions disappear and reappear as one R is substituted for by R'; and GdNi which exhibits large dilations along two crystallographic directions and a larger contraction in the third direction at the Curie temperature resulting in zero volume change as GdNi orders magnetically via a second order phase transition.COMMERCIALLY IMPORTANT INTERMETALLICSNdFeB Permanent MagnetsThe Nd2Fe14B permanent magnets were discovered in 1984 independently in the USA and Japan. It is a ferromagnet and with proper heat treatment and processing Nd2Fe14B is the strongest near room temperature permanent magnetic material known today. This intermetallic compound is utilized as a permanent magnet in many applications, such as electric motors (e.g. the modern automobile contains up to 35 electric motors), spindles for computer hard disc drives, microphones and speaker magnets for cell phones and other audio equipment, direct drive wind turbines, actuators, and Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) units. There are two kinds of NdFeB permanent magnets – bonded and sintered. The bonded magnets have a lower magnetic strength than the sintered magnet. The highest strength magnets are obtained by small substitutions of Dy (up to a maximum of 10%) for Nd, because Dy can significantly increase the coercivity and thus the energy product (a measure of the magnetic strength or hardness). The bonded magnets account for about 12% of the NdFeB market (~82 metric kt per year, containing ~20 kt/a of Nd). The NdFeB permanent magnet market is growing at a rate of about 15% per year. It has long been recognized that the driving force in an isothermal diffusion process may be regarded as the negative gradient of the chemical potential (partial molal free energy) of the diffusing substance. This equivalence is exactly analogous to the fact that a mechanical force is the negative gradient of the potential energy. Nernstl in 1888 expressed these driving forces in terms of osmotic pressure, which is directly related to the chemical potential and free energy. The relationship between the diffusivity, mobility and activity coefficient of electrolytes in aqueous solution has been developed in great detail by Onsager and FuossZ with results which have recently been confirmed experimentally by Harned and Nuttall. This interpretation of the driving force in isothermal diffusion has been discussed earlier by the author,4,5 who pointed out4 that "for a system of more than two components it.is no longer necessarily true that a given element tends to diffuse toward a region of lower concentration even within a single phase region"; departure from the behavior of an ideal solution may be so great that the concentration gradient and the chemical potential gradient, or activity gradient, may be of different sign, thus giving rise to "up hill" diffusion. Since, in the discussion of that paper,4 some skepti- cism as to the validity of this conclusion was expressed, it seemed desirable to adduce experimental evidence to support it. Evidence of such diffusion in nonmetallic systems has already been reported. For example, it was observed by Hartley" in a series of experiments in which sodium chloride diffused from a saturated solution in about 5 pct acetone in water into a solution virtually free of salt but with essentially the same acetone concentration. Specifically, a wine glass containing crystalline salt and saturated solution was totally immersed in a large glass cylinder containing the acetone-water solution without salt; the difference in specific gravity was such as to prevent convection. Diffusion of salt was accompanied by a marked depletion of acetone in the wine glass; after 3 days the acetone concentration decreased from 5.37 pct at the top of the glass, where the salt concentration was low (0.93 pct), to 1.84 pct at the bottom where the salt concentration was high (21.64 pct). This "uphill" diffusion was found to be such that the partial pressure (activity) of acetone was essentially equalized throughout the system when a steady state gradient of sodium chloride was maintained. In order to demonstrate the existence of such diffusion in metals, a series of four weld-diffusion experiments was made. In these measurements pairs of steel of virtually the same carbon content, but differing markedly in alloy content, were welded at the end and held at 10500 C for about two weeks. Subsequent analysis showed that carbon had diffused so as to produce an inequality

The Pinto Valley, Arizona, plant of Cities Service Company is one of the newest copper producers in the United States, having started production in 1975. It is located a few miles west of Miami, Arizona, on the site of the Castle Dome Mine, a World War II operation which was shut down and its mill later moved and renamed the Copper Cities plant. The Pinto Valley concentrator uses six 18 ft (5. 5 m) diameter by 21 ft (6.4 m) long, 4000 hp, single-stage ball mills, taking crushed ore from four 7 ft (2. 13 m) standard and eight 7 ft shorthead crushers. It has a design capacity of 40,000 stpd but has higher tonnage capability for an expanded concentrator. The copper porphyry-ore is mined by two 15 yd and one 20 yd shovels (11.5 and 15.3 cu m) and is transported to the primary crusher by 150-ton trucks. The dump pocket is relatively shallow (14 ft or 4. 27 m deep); and because of the width necessary for the 150-ton trucks, it was designed to use the ore itself instead of manganese steel as an abrasion- resistant lining, although a heavy steel cap protects the dump pocket top edge. The pocket has a capacity of 300 tons of ore. Water sprays under the dumping positions direct a fog toward the truck being dumped for excellent dust control. Breaking of oversize is done by a hydraulic impact breaker mounted on a hydraulically operated articulated arm situated at the side of the dump pocket. Again because of the shallow pocket, no splitter is used to protect the spider of the 60 in. by 89 in. Traylor gyratory crusher, which is equipped with a hydroset mechanism. Crushed ore at 8 in. (203 mm) drops into the 360 st surge chamber lined with AR plate and then is fed directly to the 60 in. (1.52 m) stock- pile conveyor by an 84 in. by 20 ft (2. 13 m by 6.1 m) four-speed apron feeder at a rate of up to 4000 stph. Early in 1977, Cities Service will replace the four -speed electric drive with a hydraulic pump and motor with infinitely variable speed. They are also studying the replacement of the apron feeder with an 8 ft wide (2.44 m) belt feeder similar to those at Similkameen and Palabora. Peak crushing capacity would then be increased to 5000 stph. The AR plate in the crushed ore pocket was installed in large, rectangular sheets which required much less embedded metal to hold it in place than would the more conventional, smaller arid square pieces of cast manganese steel. For duty in the crushed ore pocket, where wear is not severe, the AR plate is a satisfactory material. The new Palabora Figure-8 crusher also uses this design.

The 2101 lean duplex stainless steel has wide potential application in storage, heat exchangers, and in the oil and gas industries. This work investigates the electrochemical behaviour of 2101 duplex stainless steel with an addition of 0.15 wt% ruthenium, using potentiodynamic techniques in 1M H2SO4 at 25º, 40º, 60º, and 80ºC. The microstructures of samples were characterized using optical metallography and scanning electron microscopy. The results showed that the ruthenium addition moved the corrosion potential of alloy 2101 to a more positive potential. All samples containing ruthenium displayed longer passive regions at 25°C and 80°C compared to those without ruthenium. Alloys without ruthenium had higher critical current density (icrit) values when compared to the alloys with ruthenium. Ruthenium additions decreased the passive current densities and inhibited anodic dissolution. At room temperature the corrosion rate of alloys with ruthenium was lower than these without ruthenium.

Pittsburgh #8 coal cleaned by the conventional froth flotation was oxidized in a 2-liter Parr Stirred Top Bench Reactor. The oxidation time was varied up to 5 hours; the temperature, from 150 to 225°C, the oxygen pressure, from 15 to 500 psi; and coal dosage, from 15 to 60 grams in 600 ml of distilled water. The oxidation of coal was evaluated by measuring total acidic group formed on the coal surface as well as by measuring the adsorption of calcium ion from a solution under standard conditions. It was found that the oxidation increased with increasing oxygen pressure without much leveling-off effect. However, the oxidation of coal increased sharply from 150°C to 175°C and then tended to level off above 175°C. The adsorption of calcium was reached more than 3% on the coal oxidized under favorable conditions. The adsorption of calcium on coal increased sharply with increasing equilibrium pH. The BTU loss was sensitive to oxidation temperature. This study concludes that the optimum oxidation of coal should be conducted at high oxygen pressures around (e.g. 500 psi) 170°C for 3 hours. This study also concludes that the oxidation in an autoclave is far superior to that in a fluidized bed in terms of calcium adsorption, BTU loss and reaction time.

"PURPOSE OF TESTSThe propulsive strength4 developed by the Cardox blasting device depends on the thickness of disk, weight of heater element, and weight of carbon dioxide charge. It might be supposed that the maximum weight of carbon dioxide that can be charged into the shell should give the greatest strength. However, according to the ballistic pendulum, the maximum weight of carbon dioxide with certain conditions of heater and disk has less propulsive strength than a smaller charge; in one condition of test a loss of 39 per cent in propulsive strength was noted. It is therefore of interest to study the effect of the variables that determine the strength of Cardox.ACKNOWLEDGMENTGrateful acknowledgment is made to A. B. The shell is prepared for use by inserting a heater element, closing the open end with a shearing disk, and screwing in place the discharge cap. The charge of carbon dioxide enters the shell through the electrode.The heater element is fired by an electric igniter of the match—head type. The heat released by the heater element completely gasifies the carbon dioxide and raises the pressure of the gas until it is enough to shear the disk."

"Airborne electromagnetic surveys were flown during 1965 in the Moose River area of Ontario. The systems used were INPUT Mark II and the Canadian Aero Otter. Anomalies indicated by both systems were located on the ground with vertical-loop EM. Two such anomalies were drilled, with no explanation being found in the bedrock geology. Subsequent seismic, resistivity and gravity surveys indicated that the sources of these anomalies lay in the overburden. Current work in the similar geological environment of the Winisk River area has shown that comparable AEM anomalies can still be misleading. The lesson to be, learned from these experiences is that additional geophysical work can help to resolve doubtful cases before drilling decisions are made."

"INTRODUCTION This past year commodity prices continued their dip with increased volatility causing market values to slide another 16% putting increased pressure on even the largest companies to improve their free cash flow.[1] Without a recovery in commodity prices in sight, companies must find a sustainable method to improve returns in the current economic climate. In an effort to improve plant sustainability, the mineral processing industry is investing in advanced automation technologies and innovative processing methods that are both more reliable and more efficient than ever before. One such breakthrough technology is Heap Leaching (HL). This method of extraction has certain advantages over traditional metallurgical methods making previously unsustainable operations economically feasible. While HL is already seeing use in the gold and copper industries among others, recent developments may allow for the use of HL to process primary sulfide ores which make up about 80% of today’s ores.[2] For this reason, this emerging technology is poised for exciting growth. Unfortunately, as with any process change, the implementation of HL projects requires significant training on both the control system as well as the underlying process, and further, due to the complex nature of the HL process, this can be a particularly difficult task. DEMOGRAPHIC TIME BOMB Even before the implementation of these new technologies, the availability of the skilled workforce has already become a significant problem for the mining and mineral processing industries. From a survey of 912 mining professionals, Stratum International found that a mere 0.4% of senior level candidates were between the ages of 25 and 34 and a similar proportion aged over 75 years.[3] This indicates that there is both a deficiency of young skilled workers and a skilled workforce that is retiring earlier than the previous generation. Combined with data published by the US Department of Labor stating that the median age of the mining workforce is approaching 50 years old, research suggests that up to 50% of skilled mining and mineral process professionals are expected to retire in the next 5 years, leaving with their irreplaceable knowledge and experience.[4] While it is projected that the labor pool will be sufficient to fill open positions, the real question is if this young workforce will have necessary skill sets and experiences. In addition to a rapidly aging workforce and an inexperienced labor pool, a study done by the Oil and Gas Journal showed that it takes about 7 years, on average, for new workers to achieve a level of competency that permits them to assess risks and appropriately make decisions.[5] Not only is this figure is in direct conflict with the typical tenure of 5 years in one position meaning that the thinly spread skilled labor will be required to become senior staff before they are able to achieve competency in their current role, this also means that these millennials are not given the opportunity to become competent in their role before the retirement of the more experienced workforce."

Adsorption of cyanide complexes of gold, silver, copper, mercury, nickel, cobalt, iron, zinc and cadmium has been studied. Adsorption isotherms of the mentioned metals from individual solutions for different free cyanide concentrations have been obtained. Values of the constants of Freundlich isotherm equation have been calculated. Metal cyanide complexes affinity to activated carbon was determined.

The amount of coal used in the Colonies before the Revolutionary War was very small, and few records of it can be found, these all being in the Public Records Office in London. The exports and imports for the years 1768 to 1772, inclusive, are shown in Table 3, which apparently do not include the early shipments from the Virginia field. For the three years 1769 to 1771, the imports from Great Britain-their only source-totalled 17,943 tons, or an average of 5,981 tons per year. If the shipments from Richmond for the same period were available, this average would probably not exceed 6,800 tons per year. In Table 4 the shipments of coal from the James River ports for the period 1758 to 1769 are shown. A few of them are re-exports of coal brought from England, but the great majority are undoubtedly of coal produced in Virginia, and the movement was partly to West Indian ports but mainly to Atlantic ports from Baltimore to Portsmouth, N. H. (Piscataway). In Table 5 the data in Tables 3 and 4 are combined, the exports being deducted, and this summarizes all the available data on the amount of coal consumed in the Colonies before the separation from England. As has already been stated there has been a tremendous amount of work done in the Richmond field over a long period of time, many mines were opened and in some cases operated for years, and practically no accurate data remain or have been published to show what was done. There are undoubtedly manuscripts still remaining that will contribute to much of the knowledge of this field, and it is well worth the while of the proper state authorities to collect all the information that can be found anywhere, to enable the future development of these coal deposits to benefit by the record of what was done in the past. Table 22 shows all the methods of shipment from this field, and all of the data available about tonnages moved over each of them. The shipments by the Chesterfield and Clover Hill Railroads are largely duplicated in some of the other columns, but allowance has been made for this in the estimated totals. In addition to the difficulties experienced with similar data for the other states, these Virginia records have one peculiarly their own; it was the custom to allow 5 pecks to the bushel of coal at the pit and only 4 pecks at the docks or at vessel side. In most of the figures it is not stated to which point they apply, and a considerable error may exist due to this cause, although certainly it does not apply to all of them. The notes show the sources of the figures used, and while it is probable that the totals are lower than the actual amounts produced, the data given are the most complete that can now be assembled.

One of the difficulties encountered in the preparation of titanium specimens for transmission electron microscopy is the formation of a surface hydride phase during the thinning operation at ambient temperatures. This necessarily destroys contrast, obscures features of interest, and often leads to misleading results. By cooling the polishing solution to temperatures below 0°C this problem has been overcome in the past.' However, since the cooling procedure is somewhat inconvenient, a technique was developed at this laboratory for thinning titanium at room temperature. The material examined was A-70 grade commercial-purity titanium purchased from the Crucible Steel Co. of America. The mechanical and thermal treatments, described elsewhere,* yielded a recrystallized grain size of 4 to 5 p. A slice, 0.5 mm thick and 1.5 mm wide, was cut from a bulk specimen2 using a diamond cut-off wheel. The sample was then coated with paraffin wax. Two concentric holes, about 0.03 in. in diam, one at each broad face, were scribed through the wax to the surface of the metal. Subsequent polishing for several minutes resulted in a preferentially thinned or "dimpled" region. Thereafter, the wax was removed and the entire specimen polished to the point of breakthrough at the base of the dimple. Polishing was effected chemically in a solution comprised of 30 pct HF and 70 pct HN03 by volume, kept at room temperature (20" to 25OC). The specimens were mounted in a stereo holder and examined at 100 kv in a Philips l00 B Electron Microscope. A micrograph from a foil prepared in this way is shown in Fig. 1. Several points are noteworthy. This electron micrograph shows neither evidence for the formation of a hydride phase due to specimen preparation nor, moreover, any obvious surface contamination in electron-transparent areas of a freshly prepared foil. Localized variations in foil thickness observed in some specimens seem to be a characteristic of this chemical polish but do not seriously detract from foil quality. With care, the lifetime of a good specimen exceeded 2 hr in the beam. On the other hand, the exposure of a sample to air at atmospheric pressure, when still warm from the beam, clearly resulted in the deterioration of a formerly clean area just previously in the field of view. An example in Fig. 2 of a contaminated region reveals features, and "spots", not unlike those observed in much purer material by Yamane and Ueda. Consequently, one can conclude that: 1) titanium can be thinned satisfactorily in a solution at room temperature for transmission electron microscopy; 2) large-scale precipitates, >50A in diam, are absent in commercial-purity, recrystallized, furnace-cooled, A-70 titanium containing about 3800 wt ppm interstitials and the same amount of iron; 3) care must be taken not to attribute surface contaminants to precipitates. "Abstract-The Amalgamated Kirkland gold deposit is located at Kirkland Lake, Ontario, within the Archean Abitibi Greenstone belt of the Canadian Shield. It lies on a fault or "break", termed the Cyprus Break, which is a splay off a regional structure termed the Cyprus-Battle Mountain Break. The Cyprus Break merges with the Cyprus - Battle Mountain Break above the -250 m level, as it was not encountered in shallow drilling or surface exploration. These structures lie 1.5 km south of the 727 000 kg (23 million ounce) Kirkland Lake Main Break and 0.5 km north of the 872 000 kg (30 million ounce) Larder Lake Break.The deposit is hosted by alkalic Timiskaming Group volcanic and sedimentary rocks which are overthrust by older Larder Lake Group tholeiitic and komatiitic flows along the Larder Lake Break. Timiskaming syenitic intrusives, similar to the host rocks for the Kirkland Lake Main Break gold deposit, intrude both suites.The Amalgamated Kirkland deposit consists of lode-style gold mineralization which is mainly hosted by altered and pyritized Timiskaming trachytic volcanics which wedge out or thin at depth, between two sedimentary units. The intersection of the Cyprus - Battle Mountain and Cyprus Breaks, in conjunction with the westward plunge of the volcanic wedge, appears to control the westerly plunge of the Amalgamated Kirkland deposit at approximately 50º.Mineralization is characterized by blue-gray brecciated and "wormy" quartz-ankerite veins which contain up to 10% fine-grained pyrite and, in decreasing order of abundance, minor galena, chalcopyrite, sphalerite, molybdenite and visible gold. The sulfides and gold commonly occur along fractures and wallrock inclusions within the veins. Native gold occurs as fine pinpoints distributed in 1-mm to 5-mm size clusters of up to ten or more grains.The auriferous veins occur within a quartz-ankerite-sericite-pyrite alteration assemblage which is enveloped by a broader zone of ankerite-sericite±hematite±quartz-pyrite alteration up to 60 m wide. This latter assemblage overprints the regional greenschist-facies chlorite-calcite assemblage.The Amalgamated Kirkland property has had a long history of exploration activity beginning with the first discovery of mineralization in 1911 on the Hunton Shaft claim located in the northeast corner of the property. Since that time various prospecting, mapping, trenching, geophysical surveys and diamond drilling programs have concentrated on either carbonate zones along the Larder Lake Break or quartz veins along the northern side of the property in association with complex trachyte flows and syenite dikes.Battle Mountain Canada Inc. located the Cyprus - Battle Mountain Break through a prospecting, trenching and geophysical program in 1989. Drilling by Battle Mountain and Cyprus Canada under the surface showing, coupled with several revisions to the structural interpretation of the Cyprus - Battle Mountain and Cyprus Breaks, resulted in delineation of the Amalgamated Kirkland deposit. Location of an auriferous structure through basic surface exploration within 1 km of a world-class orebody demonstrates both the subtle nature of Archean gold deposits and the potential for finding new mineralization in heavily prospected camps."

"The Amalgamated Kirkland gold deposit is located at Kirkland Lake, Ontario, within the Archean Abitibi Greenstone belt of the Canadian Shield. It lies on a fault or “break”, termed the Cyprus Break, which is a splay off a regional structure termed the Cyprus-Battle Mountain Break. The Cyprus Break merges with the Cyprus – Battle Mountain Break above the -250 m level, as it was not encountered in shallow drilling or surface exploration. These structures lie 1.5 km south of the 727 000 kg (23 million ounce) Kirkland Lake Main Break and 0.5 km north of the 872 000 kg(30 million ounce) Larder Lake Break.The deposit is hosted by alkalic Timiskaming Group volcanic and sedimentary rocks which are overthrust by older Larder Lake Group tholeiitic and komatiitic fows along the Larder Lake Break. The U.S. Bureau of Mines pioneered the use of borehole deformation gauges and overcoring techniques to measure in situ stress. These measurements provide input to structural mine design and support selection for specific geologic conditions. This paper presents recent stress measurements in a western U.S. coal mine where the orientation of the stress field remained relatively unchanged over distances of several kilometers. The horizontal stress magnitude increased with depth of cover and in relation to major geologic structures. Local variations in roof stress profiles were used to develop generic models relating stress arching to strata stiffness and the inelastic behavior of mine roof.

The basic mining law of Esthonia is the law that was passed by the Parliament (Riigikogu), or State Assembly, on March 17, 1927 (effective Avril 1, 1927), superseding the Russian Mining Law Book VII of the Code) issued in 1912. References in this digest are only to articles of the Law of Merch 17, 1927. However, the law concerning all industrial enterprises (Riigi Teataja No. 28, 1920, Law No. 106) governs not only mills and refineries but also mining operations themselves (arts. 2 and 3). No access was ad to that law. Esthonia is not well supplied with minerals; its industries are primari- ly agriculture and dairy farming. Natural gas, prites, lead, zinc, iron ore, salt, and mineral waters have been found but never as yet in deposits of commer cial size. The production of oil shale is of some importance; and peat, which covers as much as 5 per cent of the total area of the country, is mined in sub- stantial quantities. Cement rock, gypsum, fire clay, and phosphate rock likewise are produced, though only on a small scale.

Coal washery wastes comprise tailings, finer than 0.5 to 0.1 inn depending on the sophistication of the washery, and coarse reject, typically finer than 50 mm. Subaerial disposal of coal tailings slurry at about 30 per cent solids by mass results in the formation of a delta with an average slope of about 1 in 100, representing one extreme. The ravelling of coarse reject on loose-dumping, results in an angle of repose slope with an angle of about 37" (1 in 1.3), representing the other extreme. The pumped co-disposal of coal tailings and coarse reject results in the formation of an upper delta with an average slope of about to one in ten, between the two extremes. The depositional behaviour of these three waste streams is discussed and compared in this paper. The important depositional and material parameters, and a theoretical description of the processes involved, are also presented. Comparisons are made between the depositional behaviour of the various coal washery waste streams, and natural depositional systems, such as rivers, alluvial fans, and scree slopes.

The term "block caving" as used in this text includes panel caving and mass caving as described by Julin and Tobie (1973). This method reportedly was conceived in 1895 when a block of ore ranging up to 200 ft (61 m) in width was undercut at the Pewabic Mine on the Menominee Range in Michigan (Bucky, 1956). Over the years this method has evolved largely as a consequence of trial and error in which operators became acutely aware of what nature would allow and what it would not. Today block caving remains somewhat of an art rather than a science where experience often dictates what needs to be done. With the plunging prices of base and specialty metals in the early 1980s caving mines sought to reduce operating and development costs in order to return to profitability. For some this became an impossible task given the design, grade and operating costs of the day and closure became the only alternative. One lesson learned from the experiences of the 80s is that survivability depends on cost competitiveness and this implies the efficient use of resources and technology. To this end applied rock mechanics serves as a useful tool. The purpose of this paper is to show how Geomechanics can be used? in block caving to facilitate sound decision making and how this equates to dollars saved. Features of mining method selection, design and operation are discussed as related to this theme.
