"Microscopic studies of peat moss indicate a highly porous material. In view of using this natural product as an adsorbing agent for the treatment of polluted water, studies of its adsorbing power for beef extract and alkyl benzene sulphonate solution were determined. The effects of time of contact, particle size, concentration of adsorbent and concentration of pollutant were studied. In the case of beef extract, there is a COD reduction of around 27 per cent; in the case of the alkyl benzene sulphonate, the percentage reduction varied from 72 to 95 per cent. A water treatment plant based on the adsorbing power of peat moss with simultaneous recuperation of the pollutant is proposed."

Despite the importance of froth flotation to the mineral industries as a means of separating various minerals, the commercial flotation reagents used have varied little in the last twenty years. Numerous articles and books are available describing existing flotation chemistry and its application, e.g., Fuerstenau (1962), Fuerstenau (1976), Aplan (1980), Somasundaran (1980), King (1982), Leja (1982), Ackerman, et. al. (1984), Crozier (1984), Hansen and Klimpel (1985). There are many reasons for this lack of significant new reagent development including the general utility and relative cheapness of collectors, such as xanthates, and frothers, such as methyl isobutyl carbinol and the glycol ethers. Another important reason is the inherent complexity of the flotation process itself coupled with highly variable and difficult to standardize feed materials which make reliable reagent comparisons difficult and seriously limit the use of theoretically based studies to "predict" new or optimal reagents. In addition, the higher cost of "specialty flotation reagents demands that their performance attributes be significantly greater than existing general all- purpose commercial reagents – something often difficult to prove in practice. Faced with this situation, a detailed applications research pro- gram [Klimpel (1980 ab, 1982, 1984 ab), Klimpel, et. al. (1982)] was organized from 1979-1985 on mineral flotation with the following goals: 1) the development of appropriate batch laboratory flotation testing techniques sensitive enough and statistically reliable enough to identify small differences in performance between different flotation tests (i.e., between various reagents, even those with relatively minor chemical structural changes); 2) the identification of mathematical models with appropriate numbers and types of parameters that have maximum statistical power to statistically distinguish between various time-recovery profiles; 3) the generation of laboratory and corresponding plant scale data in sufficient quantity and consistency so that the highly interactive nature of the "flotation system9' of chemistry/ equipment/operating conditions could be quantified; and 4) the invention and development of really new and unique reagents for giving improved flotation performance. Electrical prospecting is the art of exploring the structure of the subsoil in regard to conductivity variations and interpreting the results of such exploration as to their geological meaning. Electrical prospecting has been applied during the last few years with outstanding success, not only to prospecting1 for ore but also to structural studies.2 Both applications have proved helpful to the geologist, and the latter application especially promises to become of still greater importance in the future. The mapping of structures is the most important function of the oil geologist. Oil is lighter than water, therefore in water-bearing beds it will migrate upward until the migration is stopped by a bed impermeable to the oil. Geologic structures such as domes, anticlines, faults and terraces, offer good prospects in the search for oil accumulations and can be traced easily by electrical prospecting, provided they are composed of a series of sedimentary layers of which at least one possesses fair electrical conductivity and follows the general trend of the structure. Conditions for Successful Mapping The first condition, fair electrical conductivity, is met in almost any oil-bearing series, because generally the electrical resistance of a sedimentary bed is identical with the resistance of the more or less saline waters, filling partly or entirely the pores of the rocks.3 Briefly, the electrical resistivity of a bed can be expressed for all practical purposes by the product R X P, where R is the specific resistance of the waters in the rock pores and P a factor depending upon the percentage of water by volume in the rock. This paper presents an engineering approach to solve a complex ground control problem at reduced cost, allowing the mine to be operated safely and economically. The mine has experienced serious and complicated cutter roof problem in the entries. This cutler roof problem has delayed the advance of the entry development considerably and cost of these entries is very high due to the requirement of very heavy artificial supports. The analysis includes assessment of the cause of cutter roof and step by step action taken to improve the entry condition through appropriate longwall panel entry design and roof support system. The approach for solving the problem was two-fold: 1) to apply yield pillar concept in order to reduce the effects of in-situ horizontal stress in the roof strata and 2) to find an effective way to reinforce the roof strata and to support the fractured roof and avoid caving.

he removal of oxygen from titanium and zirconium is important for use in application because it significantly affects the mechanical and physical properties such as ductility and toughness. However, thermodynamic properties of oxygen in molten titanium and zirconium have not been clarified and the effective deoxidation process of molten titanium and zirconium has not been established. In this study, the standard Gibbs energy of reaction of oxygen and yttrium in molten titanium and zirconium have been measured by a chemical equilibrium technique. Molten titanium, zirconium, and their alloys with aluminum were equilibrated with a Y2O3, A12O3, or Zr02 pellet in a cold crucible. The results are summarized as follows:

A novel electrically-enhanced metal purification using slag has been developed. This was achieved by applying DC potential between liquid metal and slag phases. The concept was demonstrated through small-scale experiments at temperatures of 1500-1600oC for the removal of boron from Si-B melt using CaO-SiO2-16wt%Al2O3. Silicon (containing B) and slag were reacted in an alumina crucible in a resistance tube furnace. A circuit was produced by immersing graphite rods into the silicon bath and the slag layer. Electrical potential differences of up to 3.5 V were applied during the reactions. The reaction rates, the opencircuit voltages and short-circuit currents (in the case when the potential was applied) were then measured and determined for various slag to silicon ratio. It has been shown from this study that both the apparent rate and the boron partition ratio were increased by a factor of approximately 1.6.

"Mine tunneling applications are sensitive to the leakage and friction performance of ducting systems. Improvements in performance can help project economics through reduction in drift height, booster fan spacing, fan electrical power requirement, and deferral of ventilation raise construction. Semirigid plastic ducting has enjoyed significant adoption in mine tunneling in recent years. This paper explores technical properties and performance aspects of this relatively new material application.INTRODUCTIONUnderground mining projects are sensitive to mine development cost and schedule to meet first production—both of which are defined to a substantial extent by mine access construction. The very nature of mine access development requires driving accesses into new areas and even mechanized and automated tunneling methods require ventilation. Until underground airways are connected, allowing a flow-through circuit, ducted ventilation is required to establish ventilation within any single-access (i.e.: dead-end) heading. See Figure 1 as an example of ducted ventilation. Improving performance of ducted ventilation systems impacts project cost and schedule in several ways:For drifts whose height is defined by overhead clearance above haul trucks or tall equipment, smaller diameter ducting will decrease heading size.With higher ventilation flows, activities can be less ventilation-constricted; secondary headings can be worked without restriction, which improves schedule.Given the ability to provide more air for a given fan power, blasting gasses can clear the face and mine more quickly so crews can return to work more quickly - allowing higher advance rates.Lower electrical costs – both due to lower power consumed by fans and with the requirement for fewer electrical stations to power booster fans."

Rock strata, natural and mining-induced stresses, and structural features can combine to create dangerous instabilities in or around longwall panels. Rock noises and properties variations associated with local stress systems can be used to characterize developing instabilities. Through a learning process at a particular mine, guidelines can be developed to allow the determination of relative risk and timing of a potentially disastrous instability. Once a dangerous instability has been identified, operational modifications can be employed to get through the instability, or active measures such as destressing can be used to mitigate the instability. This paper will discuss how an integrated monitoring system and associated data processing can be used to develop a hazard prediction capability for a longwall mine.

Mechanical separation systems are widely used nowadays for scrap metal processing, but they have natural limitations in product quality. The quality of the final product is considerably improved when sensors are used in the separation process. This paper describes new methods using sensors for scrap metal sorting and quality control. An example is the electromagnetic sensor, which uses the electrical and magnetic properties of materials to distinguish between different non-ferrous metals. The measurement results of two prototypes are reported. The benefits and the possibility to integrate such systems into practical applications regarding the processing of secondary raw materials are also described.

The intent was coequality among three, (studies of mankind, of science, and of technological empirics). Thirty-three pct for "man" studies is a pretty big bite for engineering schoolmen; 50 pct they won't even examine, let alone nibble at. Arthur F. IN THE FIELD of track haulage, interest has seemed to center on the question of larger mine cars both for handling material from loading point to shaft bottom or surface, and for shuttle service. Saving of time in car changing is obvious if larger cars are used. In addition, shorter trips result where car transportation is from face to opening without transfer. This also brings about side-track and equipment savings. Track shuttle service, using large automatic-dump cars (10 tons) between loading machines and trip loading point, has been a satisfactory solution for the operator who mechanizes a working mine regularly equipped with a large number of small mine cars. This development in track shuttle haulage, has made track installation and maintenance increasingly important, requiring closer supervision.

The dissolution behavior of palladium powder in thiourea solutions has been studied. The variables studied included temperature, stirring speed, and concentrations of thiourea, acid and ferric ion. Palladium was found to be soluble in thiourea solutions in the presence of an oxidant such as ferric ion. The dissolution of palladium in thiourea solutions was found to be chemical reaction controlled with an apparent activation energy of about 2S.3 kJ/mol.

"Electrodeposition behavior of Zn-Cr alloys from the methanol baths was investigated. In the methanol baths of low Cr3+ concentration, Cr (III) compound was incorporated in the deposits and no lusfrous Zn-Cr alloys was deposited. However, Cr was existed as metallic state in the deposits obtained from the baths of higher Cr3+ concentration. With an increase in water content in the baths, the chemical state of Cr in the deposits changed from metallic to trivalent state. Under the condition that metallic Cr can be electrodeposited, Zn deposition was significantly polarized to the potential of Cr deposition.INTRODUCTIONAn attention has been paid to Zn-Cr alloy plated steel sheet because of its excellent properties for body panels of automobile and electrical appliances [1]-[4]. This plating process can be operated using the sulfate solutions containing Cr3+ ion [1] - [6].In decorative single Cr plating, on the other hand, many attempts have been made to electroplate Cr from trivalent electrolytes, which is motived by environmental deficiencies of the presently used hexavalent process [7]. [8]. However, it has been reported that in the aqueous solutions the behavior of the electroreduction of 0 3+ is atypical due to the complicated nature of the chemistry and electrochemistry of cr3+ species [9]-[11]. Even in Zn-Cr alloy plating, it is difficult to codeposit metallic Cr with Zn in simple sulfate electrolytes [l]-[4], [12]. Therefore, it can be expected that the electrodeposition behaviors of Zn-Cr alloys as well as Cr are significantly changed when the electrodeposition is conducted in non-aqueous plating solutions.In this study, the electrodeposition of Zn-Cr alloy was conducted from methanol solutions to clarify the electroreduction mechanism of Cr3·-Cr0 in the alloy deposition process."

The mine site is situated south east of Port Hedland in the Pilbara region of Western Australia. A detailed engineering design was undertaken for six irregularly shaped waste rock dumps at the site. The design was undertaken to ensure long-term stability of the dumps and optimise material movements for closure construction. The Watershed Erosion Prediction Program (WEPP) and SIBERIA landscape evolution modelling was undertaken for the landforms using regional and site-specific material characteristics to provide an indication of the maximum allowable slopes and corresponding slope lengths for long-term stability.The majority of the waste materials present in the waste rock dumps are considered likely to be subgrade banded iron formation (BIF) and chert, which is generally competent material. The presence of a large number of dolerite dyke swarms indicates appreciable volumes of dolerite were produced as waste from the pits. Geological records also indicate that the dolerite is logged as being heavily kaolinised in the geological logging, hence kaolinite is very likely to be present within the waste dumps on-site. This material has an elevated risk of being highly erodible/dispersive. Clays and shales are also likely to be present in the dumps and are considered to be less competent material (relative to the BIF/chert).The final design configuration of the largest existing ‘unplanned’ waste rock stockpile is compared to a hypothetical continuous ten degree outer embankment alternative. This paper will present a brief description of the alternatives for closure of three waste dumps in close proximity to each other and how the detailed design based on site-specific materials and conditions compare to an alternative approach blankly assuming that most materials will be erosionally stable at less than ten degrees.CITATION:Kemp, A, Taylor, I?and Hancock,?G,?2014.
