An account of the operation of the Noranda smelter covering the period from December, 1927, when the smelter started, until December, 1929, was given in a paper published by the Canadian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy early in 1930.' The object of the present paper is to review matters of interest in the original paper and to describe the present construction and operation of the smelter, with particular reference to the reverberatory-furnace practice. The Noranda smelter was built by Noranda Mines, Ltd., from the designs of A. E. Wheeler, consulting metallurgist of New York, for the reduction of ores and concentrates from the Horne mine and to treat, on a custom basis, ores and concentrates from other mines in the Rouyn district. The smelter is at Noranda, about 330 miles directly north of Toronto. Construction work was started in June, 1926, and copper was first produced in December, 1927. The smelter was built throughout as two duplicate units, each with a rated capacity of 500 tons of ore per day. Operations were started with one unit and after several months it was found that one unit alone could smelt 1000 tons of ore a day. At that time there was only one hoisting shaft, No. 3, and its hoisting capacity and the capacity of the original crushing plant were insufficient to supply ore for the two units at the increased tonnage. Accordingly No. 4 shaft was sunk and a new crushing plant provided to handle the ore hoisted there. Operating two units at capacity also required the installation of two more converters to treat the additional quantity of matte produced. This work was completed in the latter part of November, 1929, and since then both smelter units have been operating continuously. In 1928, a mill to treat 500 tons a day of concentrating ore was completed. Since then the concentrator capacity has been increased twice, and at present 2000 tons a day of ore are being concentrated. The layout of the surface plant of the mine, concentrator and smelter is shown in Fig. 1 and the general plan in Fig. 2. The smelter is shown in more detail in Fig. 3. Amandelbult Mine is currently undertaking a trial to mechanise the mining of the UG2 reef through the introduction of room and pillar mining. As part of the trial, a system of managing the control of the hanging wall has been introduced, based on systems and technology that are proving successful in the nearby coal mining industry. The principal features are the use of a high bond strength, stiff bolting system which can be easily installed to a high standard, and a range of in situ tests and measurements to optimise the level of support installed to control the movement of the hanging wall. The rock bolt system and the measurements and tests described are new to the platinum mining industry. The paper describes these systems and their adaptation and application to hard rock mining. La Mine d’Amandelbult est actuellement dans des essais en vue de mécaniser l’extraction dans la veine UG2 grâce à l’introduction d’une exploitation par chambres et piliers. Dans le cadre de ces essais, un système de gestion de la paroi suspendue a été introduit, base sur des systèmes et une technologie qui prouvent donner de bons résultats dans l’industrie voisine d’extraction de la houille. Les caractéristiques principales sont l’utilisation d’un système de verrouillage raide et à forte adhérence qui peut être installé à un haut niveau de qualité et une gamme d’essais et de mesures in situ pour optimiser le niveau de soutien installé pour contrôler le mouvement de la paroi suspendue. As part of a program of investigation of the properties of electric arc welds carried out in the laboratories of the A. 0. Smith Corporation, considerable work has been done on the determination of the oxygen, nitrogen and hydrogen content of different types of weld metal, employing for this purpose the so-called "vacuum fusion method." It is the purpose of this paper to describe certain improvements that have been introduced in this method of determining the gas content of metals, with particular references to the steel specimens examined in this investigation. The method and apparatus used at the beginning of the investigation were essentially those of the Bureau of Standards as described by Vacher and Jordan.' Later a number of changes were introduced which resulted in more rapid evacuation of the graphite crucibles employed and which enabled larger volumes of gas to be dealt with than could be handled conveniently in the Bureau of Standards equipment. In addition, the analyzing of the gases evolved from a melt in the same apparatus as collected was abandoned in favor of analysis outside the equipment using standard methods of gas analysis. The time required for gas analysis in the apparatus itself, as described by the Bureau of Standards, was found to be considerable, and during this time the rest of the equipment was tied up, preventing its use for the analysis of further steel samples. As a result of the modifications introduced, the time required for the analysis of a steel sample for gas content was reduced from about 8 hours to less than 3 hours. Subsequently, the whole procedure of melting the sample and collecting the gases evolved was modified so as to enable a distinction to be drawn between the easily reducible oxides such as iron oxide and the more stable oxides such as silica and alumina. At the same time evidence was obtained indicating the probable existence in the steels of other nitrides than those of iron alone and making possible their quantitative etermination.

Many persons hold the opinion that the metal indus- ries are fortuitous and that the occupation is one of sordid toil, and altogether a kind of business requir- ing not so much skill as labour. But as for myself, when I reflect carefully upon its special points one by one, it appears to be far otherwise. So wrote Georgius Agricola in 1556. He could have been espousing the sentiments of an indus- trial archaeologist investigating mining sites in 1986. South Australia has a very rich legacy from its industrial past-especially in the area of its mining history. Industrial archaeology, which is part of the broad field of archaeology, is concerned with the material and documentary remains of this industrial past. This includes the products and processes of manufacturing, industrial, technolog- ical and engineering activity and their relation- ships to people and the environment. `Archaeology' immediately conjures up the image of excavations in Greece or Eygpt. Excavation however is only a part of archaeological methodology. Industrial archaeology utilizes documentary historical rec- ords combined with field survey techniques (both above and below ground) to create a composite picture of the past. Interest in our recent past has burgeoned in Australia in the last few years. This interest manifests itself in many ways-the unprecedented popularity of Australiana and col- lecting, the plethora of Australian historic films, the growth of the National Trust, local historical societies and genealogical research. Fortunately these trends have been reflected in academic and legislative circles. Various univers- ities, institutes of technology and colleges of advanced education run courses in aspects of cul- tural resource management and conservation of the historic environment. These courses are com- prised of archaeology, architecture, geography, his- tory, materials conservation, museum studies, and national parks management and planning.

The Mt Muro gold and silver deposit in Central Kalimantan has been in production since December 1994. The geology is characterised by narrow high-grade lodes containing gold and significant amounts of silver. From a largely untrained workforce in the grade control department, production per crew and per geologist has tripled during the three years of production. Grade control drilling evolved from blast hole sampling to reverse circulation sampling. National geologists are trained in basic modeling procedures. A fully integrated reporting and reconciliation system was programed and implemented.

FIFTEEN thousand barrels of oil daily, the production of the United States 75 years ago, amounted to more than 90 per cent of world supply. Russia and Romania, neither of which produced as much as one thousand barrels daily, were the only other suppliers in substantial quantity. The adolescent oil industry of the United States, a dozen years old in 1871, was still confined to the Appalachian region. Wells were drilled by cable tools; many of them were "kicked down" by manpower with a spring pole; and depths were measured in hundreds rather than thousands of feet-a 1000-foot well was a deep well. Casing was an innovation, come into general use only a few years previously and still so new as to be subject to bitter patent litigation. Crude oil was packaged in wooden barrels and shipped by flat boat and barge on the creeks and rivers and by railroad. Such pipe lines as existed were only a few miles long. There were many refineries. Pittsburgh, Cleveland and the Atlantic seaboard were refining centers. Refineries were very small, however, and their operations consisted essentially in simple fractionation by distillation and treating for quality. The products in demand were burning oil or kerosene and lubricating oils. Oil was not yet used as fuel and gasoline was a nuisance to the refiner.

The type and severity of coal mine entry failures are affected by the strength and stiffness properties of the roof, floor, end coal. Knowledge of the mine-wide trends of these properties Is valuable in developing effective ground control plans. Within the context of a larger effort to Improve entry stability In high horizontal stress fields, the U.S. Department of the Interior, Bureau of Mines, has evaluated three portable, on-site test devices to determine their suitability for identifying mine-wide physical property trends. The devices evaluated were the borehole shear tester, the Schmidt harmer, and the point load tester. Despite the lack of standardized data Interpretation procedures, each device provided useful on-site physical property data. The Schmidt homer was preferred for trend identification because of Its speed and simplicity. Schmidt hammer data were collected over a large area of an underground coal mine to compare calculated roof strength trends with a known geologic feature.

The effects of covering materials on radon emanations from uranium mine mill tailings were investigated. Granular materials with air in the spaces allow radon to pass freely. Moist covers of compost or soil decrease radon emanation from tailings. Water-saturated covers were more effective, and freezing the tailings with these covers further decreased radon escape. Water itself is a poor radon barrier probably due to circulation. Plants had no effect on radon emanation through soil. Although radon diffusion through water-saturated powders appears to be very slow and inefficient, about 25% of the radon escaping from the grains in water-saturated tailings diffuse to the surface and emanate when no cover is present. The radon escaping from tailings through covers of water-saturated compost or soil is no more than could be accounted for by radon produced in the covers themselves.

The ore reserve modelling of stratiform uranium deposits to be mined by selective underground mining methods must be done with consideration of the erratic nature of the ore-forming processes that produced the mineralization. Estimation methods that model the uranium grade as a smooth transition between high-grade and low-grade drill hole intercepts tend to greatly overestimate the ore tonnage. Care must be taken to first establish realtistic ore pod geometries and then estimate the grade of the reserve units within the pods.

Copper smelters of various kinds have operated in the Morenci district since 1872, but all have been abandoned with the exception of the present Morenci Smelter of Phelps Dodge Corporation, which was completed in 1942. During the five-year period starting in 1937, the Morenci ore body was prepared for open pit mining, pilot mill test work was carried out, and a complete reduction works, of which the Smelter is a part, was designed and erected. Actual construction work on the Morenci Smelter was started in the fall of 1940, and warming up of the units began on April 1, 1942. Charging of the reverberatory furnaces commenced on April 18, 1942, and the first anode copper was produced on April 26, 1942. The smelter was originally designed to handle the production of the Morenci Concentrator on a 25,000 ton per day program, but by the time the smelter was in operation, plans were already underway to increase the smelter capacity to handle the production of the concentrator which was being enlarged to 45,000 tons a day capacity as a war-time necessity. This extension to the smelter was completed and the new units were put in operation toward the beginning of 1944. The original smelter consisted of a smelter crushing plant, bedding plant, two direct-smelting reverberatory furnaces with two waste-heat boilers on each furnace, three converters, an anode department, a stack, and all of the usual accessory smelting equipment. The extension consisted of increasing the bedding plant from three to five beds, the reverberatory department from two to four furnaces, and from four to eight waste-heat boilers, and the converter department from three to six converters. A third converter aisle crane was added and additions were made to the flue systems and conveyor systems throughout the smelter; but no change was made in the smelter crushing plant or the anode department, and the same stack was used for all additional Smelter units. A blister casting machine was installed at that time in the south end of the converter aisle to handle excess and emergency production above the capacity of the anode department and in 1947 a converter aisle skull breaker and a lime burning plant were added as the final units for a complete plant. The choice of direct smelting over calcine smelting for the Morenci Smelter was made after careful study by members of the Western organization of Phelps Dodge Corporation and after test runs on direct smelting of Morenci concentrate had been made at the Douglas Smelter of Phelps Dodge Corporation. The Morenci furnace charge is made up of comparatively high grade concentrate with no ores of smelting grade available and with only flux, a small amount of copper precipitate and the usual amount of smelter secondaries to be smelted with the concentrate. The simplicity of direct smelting for this charge and the large amount of waste-heat steam available from direct smelting operations were factors influencing the decision to adopt direct smelting for Morenci. The design of the Morenci Smelter and the type of units selected followed best experience at the Douglas Smelter of Phelps Dodge Corporation. A description of the original smelter before operations started was given in an article in the May 1942 issue of Mining and Metallurgy. The purpose of the present article is to describe the enlarged Morenci Smelter, with a discussion of metallurgy and operating practice and to show tabulations of operating and metallurgical results obtained. Because of beginning operations during the early years of World War 11, many problems caused by labor shortage were encountered, but no major difficulties developed in starting the new plant. However, because of labor shortage, full scale Smelter production was not reached until the fall of 1946. Fig 1 shows a general plan of the Morenci Reduction Works. The arrangement of the smelter equipment is shown in Fig 2, a sectional view of the smelter is shown in Fig 3, and the smelter flow sheet is shown in Fig 4. Metallurgy The metallurgy of direct smelting, being more or less fixed by the character of the charge, is not subject to the control available in calcine smelting. Slags may be modified by the addition of suitable fluxes, but the grade of the matte is determined almost entirely by the iron:copper ratio of the concentrate. The direct smelting operation involves distributing the wet concentrate along the sidewalls and in the bath of a reverberatory furnace by means of some suitable feeding device and raising the temperature of the charge so that first the moisture is driven off, then the first-atom sulphur is eliminated, and finally the sulphide portion of the charge melts and runs into the bath, carrying with it the non-sulphide portion which has been partially fluxed to form a suitable slag. The fusion of the non-sulphide portion is completed by contact with the irony converter slag which is regularly being poured into the reverberatory furnace. The smelting rate of the charge is influenced by the mineralogi-cal composition of the sulphide portion of the concentrate and by the composition and amount of the non-sulphide portion including the fluxes added. The copper in Morenci concentrate is chiefly in the form of chalcocite, intimately associated with pyrite, and non-sulphide content is very low so that

Mining and Metallurgy of Lead and Zinc, AIME Vol. 121, edited by Dr. C. R. Hayward in 1936, remains a document of importance today even though 34 years have passed in the meantime. Since nothing in this world seems to be permanent, however, and progress brings new and better ways to do things, a two-volume set has just been published to bring the state of the art of 1936 up to date. This two-volume set, Mining and Concentrating of Lead and Zinc and Extractive Metallurgy of Lead and zinc, incorporates the papers to be presented during the Proceedings of the 1970 World Symposium on the Mining and Metallurgy of Lead and Zinc. The Symposium is being held October 20-24, 1970, in St. Louis, a site near to the famous Lead Belt of southeast Missouri. Some eighty papers are bound in these two volumes covering exploration, geology, mining, concentrating, roasting, smelting, electrolytic processing, residue fuming, refining, etc. All of this is laced with data on tonnages, processes, assays and efficiencies obtained, and the man-hours and equipment needed to achieve these performances.

THE increase in the number of coal-cleaning plants employing dense-medium processes occurring since 1946 is especially interesting when viewed historically. Both sand and magnetite were introduced as material for heavy mediums at about the same time, sand in the Chance process in 1921 and magnetite in the Conklin process in 1922, but from that point on their records diverge. The Chance process enjoyed a steady growth from its inception, whereas no additional magnetite plants were built in the United States for over 20 years. Then, following the close of the World War 11, magnetite was again introduced, this time with marked success. During the following years some 47 plants employing magnetite medium were built. This rapid growth of dense-medium cleaning has been concurrent with widespread adoption of full-seam mining on one hand and a return to a more competitive market on the other. At a time when changing mining practice has provided cleaning plants with dirtier coal and changing market conditions have simultaneously demanded a cleaner product, the industry has through necessity turned to improved preparation. The inherently greater sharpness with which dense-medium processes can separate coal from impurity is thus helping to hold the line against ever-increasing mining costs and at the same time assisting materially in retaining badly needed markets. Although dense-medium cleaning unquestionably offers a distinct advantage when the washing problem is difficult, other methods can provide almost equally high efficiency when the coal is easy to wash. Moreover, fine coal cannot yet be treated by heavy medium in a proved process, although the Driessen cyclone is in the pilot-plant stage. Most of the present types of dense-medium equipment have been in use only a few years, and the dearth of information in the literature concerning their performance characteristics is entirely understandable, Nevertheless this information is necessary if the process is to be intelligently applied to individual cleaning problems. Without data on the efficiency of a process in a particular type of separation, it is difficult to assess the advantage to be expected from it. Similarly, the role of particle size in heavy-medium separation is important in some cases, yet there is little published information on this aspect. To mention only one more of the numerous points on which essential information is lacking, the bearing of medium characteristics on performance has been discussed only in qualitative terms. It was with the hope of providing information on some of these points that the Bureau of Mines built a dense-medium pilot plant for cleaning coal at its Northwest Experiment Station in Seattle in 1950. The plant has been operated continuously since that time, and over 50 runs have been made on 7 coals exhibiting a wide range of washability characteristics. An idea of the magnitude of this work will be gained from the fact that examination of the plant products has involved some 600 float-and-sink separations and about 2500 ash determinations. A laboratory pilot plant is especially well adapted to investigate many aspects of performance because close control over test conditions can be exercised and because a large number of tests can be made rapidly. On the other hand, factors such as consumption of medium and other cost items can be investigated satisfactorily only in a commercial plant. Actually, the two forms of investigation should be complementary, with the laboratory work pointing the way for confirming tests in commercial units. Pilot Plant The dense-medium pilot plant employed for this work comprises a 24x30-in. drum-type separating vessel, a 12-in. densifier, a 12-in. magnetic separator, a 26-in. x 9-ft vibrating screen, and the necessary pumps and conveyors for handling materials. Arrangement of these units corresponds with the flowsheet used in most commercial plants, except that a thickener is not provided for the feed to the magnetic separator. Coal and refuse discharge from the separating drum to the vibrator, which is divided longitudinally down the center. Medium draining through the first 3 ft of the screen is recirculated directly to the drum. Sprays on the middle 3 ft of the screen rinse medium from the products, and the last 3-ft section is for dewatering. Dilute medium from the rinsing and dewatering sections is pumped to the magnetic separator, where magnetic solids are recovered. These are pumped to the densifier, from which they return to the medium-drainage sump by gravity through a demagnetizing coil. The drum-type separating vessel is a scale model of a commercial unit. Feed enters axially at one end of the drum just below the surface of the bath, and float material overflows through a circular opening at the other end. Particles sinking to the bottom of the bath are picked up by lifting flights bolted to the inner wall of the drum, elevated out of the bath, and sluiced to the vibrating screen. Baffles suspended in the bath prevent float material from entering the sink-lifting flights. About 8 gpm of medium is used to sluice the feed into the drum. An additional 15 to 24 gpm, depending upon operating conditions, is added through two pipes dipping into the bath behind the baffle on the side where the sink-lifting flights enter the bath. The bath available for separation is 2 ft long and 13 in. wide, giving an area of 2.08 sq ft. Depth of bath from the surface to the top of the sink-lifting flights, measured vertically below the axis, is 6 in.

THE purpose of this paper is to present the results of the application of the earth-resistivity method of subsurface investigation to the problem of locating seams of anthracite coal beneath a mantle of soil and subsoil. Details are given of the successful use of this method in locating the outcrops of anthracite seams in actual prospecting. The presence of the outcrop of an anthracite seam is indicated at points where electrical resistivity tests showed relatively low readings. The reason for this is that in some localities the resistivity of anthracite was found to be about 0.0001 megohm-cm. compared to 1 to 200 megohm-cm. for shales and sandstones. For two reasons it is believed that the data sum-marized in this paper should be of particular interest. In the first place, most of the interpretations of the resistivity survey have been checked by subsequent drilling and some by the removal of the overburden and the exposing of the anthracite seams. It is infrequent that the oppor-tunity for checking results so thoroughly is given. In the second place, the fact that recent commentators1,2,3 on the application of geophysical methods to mining have concluded that direct prospecting for anthracite and other types of coal is not promising makes the good results obtained more significant. So far as the authors can learn, the only previous experiment with electrical methods in the Pennsylvania anthracite field was one made by Sherwin F. Kelly in 1922, when he used the self-potential method at Wilkes-Barre4. The profile he made does not show a very marked correlation with the geologic cross section. Kelly points out that stray currents from electric motors in the mines undoubtedly affected his results, but the experience of the present authors with stray currents from mining machinery suggests the possibility that the potentials measured by Kelly were due almost entirely to this effect.

There is an increasing awareness on an international level of the potential for utilizing many wastes and by-products as construction materials. This has resulted in recent major reviews by OECD and RILEM to supplement national activities by agencies such as CANMET, USBM, BRE and LCPC. Much of this international and national work was reported during an International Conference on the use of by-products and wastes in civil engineering held in November 1978 in Paris. Based on participation in the OECD and RILEM reviews, and the Paris conference, developments in waste and byproduct utilization of particular concern to Canada are described. The major technical and economic constraints involved are also reviewed, so that the over-all evaluation reflects important factors such as inherent variability and transport logistics. Areas requiring further research and development are also identified. Particular emphasis is placed on slags, salvaged asphaltic concrete and surplus sulphur. "Due to the rapid development of China's industry, more than a hundred million tons of industrial wastes are generated annually, which occupy lots of land for storing, bring about environmental pollution, obstruct industrial and agricultural production and cause harm to people 's living. Therefore we must utilize them effectively to create wealth for our country. "

The conventional short-time tensile test provides a reliable means of predicting the sustained load-carrying capacity of steels only when the temperature is such that continuous plastic flow does not occur. At elevated temperatures, stresses considerably less than the short-time rupture value may produce continuous flow, with fracture occurring only after long periods of time. The amount of flow or creep accompanying failure varies for different steels, and depends, to a large extent, on the temperature and the duration of the test. Service records of cracking stills, steam superheaters and high-temperature boilers have shown that brittle fractures sometimes occur with little or no warning. In installations of this type, localized stresses are often encountered, and steels must be capable of withstanding a certain amount of deformation without fracture. The sustained-load rupture test determines the expected life and corresponding ductility of steels at various stresses and temperatures. It also yields additional information regarding the effect of micro-structure and metallurgical stability on the high-temperature properties. Present Status of Sustained-load Rupture Test The sustained-load rupture test conducted at elevated temperatures is not entirely new. Dr. Zay Jeffriesl presented in 1919 the results of a large number of rupture tests made on copper, iron and tungsten. These tests were made with various strain rates and at temperatures ranging from the boiling point of liquid air to 1000° C. At that time he observed the interesting phenomenon characteristic of metals, that a temperature exists below which a metal is ductile and breaks with a transcrystalline fracture (through the grain) and above which the metal is brittle and breaks with an intergranular fracture (through the grain boundaries). The conventional short-time tensile test provides a reliable means of predicting the sustained load-carrying capacity of steels only when the temperature is such that continuous plastic flow does not occur. At elevated temperatures, stresses considerably less than the short-time rupture value may produce continuous flow, with fracture occurring only after long periods of time. The amount of flow or creep accompanying failure varies for different steels, and depends, to a large extent, on the temperature and the duration of the test. Service records of cracking stills, steam superheaters and high-temperature boilers have shown that brittle fractures sometimes occur with little or no warning. In installations of this type, localized stresses are often encountered, and steels must be capable of withstanding a certain amount of deformation without fracture. The sustained-load rupture test determines the expected life and corresponding ductility of steels at various stresses and temperatures. It also yields additional information regarding the effect of micro-structure and metallurgical stability on the high-temperature properties. Present Status of Sustained-load Rupture Test The sustained-load rupture test conducted at elevated temperatures is not entirely new. Dr. Zay Jeffriesl presented in 1919 the results of a large number of rupture tests made on copper, iron and tungsten. These tests were made with various strain rates and at temperatures ranging from the boiling point of liquid air to 1000° C. At that time he observed the interesting phenomenon characteristic of metals, that a temperature exists below which a metal is ductile and breaks with a transcrystalline fracture (through the grain) and above which the metal is brittle and breaks with an intergranular fracture (through the grain boundaries). Located south of downtown Seattle, the Beacon Hill Station & Tunnels is the key section of the southern segment of Sound Transit’s proposed new LINK light rail system. This paper presents an overview of the design, which includes 4,300 ft of segmentally-lined bore twin tunnels and a deep mined station. With platforms located156 feet below grade, the station itself is only the second large-scale mined station in soil the US. Its complex geometry combined with variable soil conditions—sands, silt sand clays with slickensides—challenged the designer’s to come up with a SEM-based design that addresses the owner’s risk, cost and schedule concerns.

THE native copper of Lake Superior occurs in the form of fine grains and scales, disseminated in small percentage through the copper-bearing rock ; and in large and small masses, from a few pounds to several hundred tons in weight. Formerly the bulk of the copper came from the mines of Ontonagon and Keweenaw counties, producing mass copper. At present these mines furnish less than one-tenth of the total product, and fully one-half of this is from a single mine. The masses are usually found irregularly distributed in nearly vertical fissure veins, and require much dead work in sinking, drifting, and stoping for their development. The risk and expense attending the working of these mines have made them, with few exceptions, anything but profitable. * Read at the Montreal meeting, September, 1880.
