Although many metallurgists know that some pearlitic special steels can be made troostitic, martensitic, and even austenitic, without quenching, and, therefore, without exposing them to the dangers of the quenching-bath, the practical significance of such possibility does not seem to have received the attention it deserves. Let us recall briefly the mechanism of the transformation alluded to. In Fig. 1 (after Guillet) is shown the constitutional diagram of nickel-steel; that is, of alloys of iron, carbon, and nickel. Any steel the composition of which falls within the area LPO is pearlitic after slow cooling; any steel the composition of which is represented by a point within the area MLO is martensitic, and any steel within the area MNO is austenitic. Starting with pearlitic steel, then by increasing the carbon-content or the nickel-content, or both, the metal becomes marten-sitic and eventually austenitic; that is, its composition crosses first the boundary-line LO and then the line MO—and it remains martensitic or austenitic after slow (air) cooling.' We have in this way imparted to the metal without quenching it the properties of hardened carbon-steel. In other words, the steel is now self-hardening; Nickel cannot be introduced into solid steel, but by the well-known process of case-hardening it

The Jiboia heavy mineral sands deposit is a new discovery associated with the São Francisco River delta on the northern coast of Sergipe state. The identified resources are part of the much larger mineralized trend. Mineralization is hosted in paleodunes deposited on Holocene marine terraces (Fig. 1). The dunes are up to 30 m above sea level, and mineralization occur from 6 m above sea level upward. The main ore minerals constitute pseudorutile, ilmenite, zircon, rutile and monazite. This work presents a thorough characterization of the mineralogy and granulometric distribution of the Jiboia orebody.

A 1,500-ft experimental well was used to study the pressure gradients occurring during continuous, vertical, two-phase flow through 1-in., 1 1/4-in. and 1 1/3-in. nominal size tubing. The test well was equipped with two gas-lijt valves and four Mathak electronic pressure transmitters as well as with instruments to measure the liquid production rate, air injection rate, temperatures and surface pressures. Tests were conducted for widely varying liquid flow, rates, gas-liquid ratios and liquid viscosities. From these data, an accucrate pressure-depth traverse was construcred for each test in each of the three tubing sizes. From the results of these tests, correlations have beer] developed which allow the accurate prediction of flowing pressure gradients for a wide variety of tubing sizes, flow conditions, and liquid properties. Also. the correlations and equations which are developed satisfy the necessary condition that they reduce to the relationships approprate to single-phase flow when the flow rate of either the gas or the liqutid phase becomes zero. All the correlations involve only dimensionless groups. which is a condition usually Sought for in similarity analysis but not always achieved. The correlations developed in this study have been used to calculate pressure gradients for pipes of larger diameter than those upon which the correlations are based. Comparisons of these calcuclaed gradients with experimetally determined gradients for the same flow conditions obtained from the literature indicate that extrapolation to these larger pipe sizes is possible with a degree of accuracy sufficient for engineering calculations. The extent of this extrapolation can only he determined with additional data from larger pipe diameters. INTRODUCTION The accurate prediction of the pressure drop expected to occur during the multiphase flow of fluids in the flow string of a well is a wideiy recognized problem in the petroleum industry. The problem has been brought even more into prominence with the advent of tubingless or slim-hole completions which use small-diameter tubing. Many of the correlations which give reasonably accurale results in the lager tubing sizes are greatly in error when applied to small-diameter conduits. Small-diameter conduits are defined as 1 1/2-in. nominal size tubing or smaller. The study of the pressure gradients which occur during multiphase flow of fluids in pipes is exceedingly complex because of the large number of variables involved. Further difficulties relate to the possibility of numerous flow regimes of widely varying geometry and mechanism and the instabilities of the fluid interfaces involved. Consequently, a solution to the problem by the approach normally used in classical fluid dynamics based on the formulation and solution of the Navier-Stokes equation has not been forthcoming. This is primarily the result of the nonlincarities involved and the difficulty of adequately describing the boundary conditions. As a result of the foregoing, most investigators have chosen semi-empirical or purely empirical approaches in an efford to obtain a practical solution to the problem. Much of the previous work in this area was done in short-tube models in the laboratory. A number of problems arise, however, when attempts are made to extrapolate these laboratory results to oilfield conditions where a much longer tube is encountered. In those few studies where data taken in long tubes were utilized, the data covered only a limited range of the variables, and as a result inaccuracies are introduced when the correlations are extended outside the range of the original data. Also, as a consequence of the limited amount of data available for these studies, the effects of several important variables were overlooked. The problem of predicting the pressure drop which occurs in multiphase flow differs from that of single-phase flow in that another source of pressure loss is introduced, namely, those pressure losses arising from slippage between the phases. This slippage is a result of the difference between the integrated average linear velocities of the two phases, which in turn is due to the physical properties of the fluids involved. In contrast to single-phase flow. the pressure losses in multiphase flow do not always increase with a decrease in the size of the conduit or an increase in production rate. This is attributed to the presence of the gas phase which tends to slip by the liquid phase without actually contributing to its lift. Many investigators have attempted to correlate both the slippage losses and the friction losses by means of a single energy-loss factor analogous to the one used in the single-phase flow problem. Newmont Gold Company, formerly Carlin Gold Mining Company, is a publicly owned corporation, 95% owned by Newmont Mining Corporation. Newmont Gold Company has operated gold recovery operations North of Carlin, Nevada, since 1965. Development of the Gold Quarry ore body, 19 kilometers south of the original mine, resulted in the decision to construct gold recovery and ancillary facilities in what is referred to as the Southern Area. Plant No. 2, located 11 kilometers North of Carlin, Nevada, was designed to treat 6350 tonnes per day of oxidized gold bearing ore assaying 2.5 grams per tonne of Au at an average recovery of 87%. Flowsheet development conducted by Newmont personnel resulted in the decision to construct a carbon-in-pulp recovery circuit preceded by two-stage grinding, Detailed engineering was done at Toronto by Bechtel of Canada beginning on January 1, 1984. Actual construction began on March 1, 1984, and was completed in June, 1985. First feed was run on June 22, 1985.

The objectives of this study were to (1) document the hydrologic impacts of longwall mining on ground water, (2) identify the factors which affect the extent of dewatering, and (3) develop empirical trends to predict the extent of dewatering and recovery in advance of mining. The study was confined to three mine sites in north-central West Virginia. At each site, available ground water supplies were identified and monitored for dewatering effects and recovery. Mine A, located in Upshur County, West Virginia, has relatively thin overburden (approximately 715-280 feet). At this site domestic water supplies and specially constructed monitoring wells were monitored, continuing with an earlier study done by Cifelli arid Rauch. Most such supplies were completely dewatered over the longwall panel. Some of these wells have shown significant recovery, especially near a stream. Extensive monitoring of two nested piezometer wells revealed that dewatering generally started in advance of undermining in the lowermost monitored overburden zones first and then progressed upwards. Most dewatered wells completed in bedrock have shown no recovery, except. for valley drilled wells located within 100 feet of a Stream. Affected dug wells completed in valley alluvium rend located within 200 feet. of the nearest stream have shown significant recovery. Some wells have partially collapsed following mine subsidence. Mine B, having relatively thick overburden (approximately 585 to 900 feet), is located in Monongalia County, West Virginia. Ground water supply surveys have been conducted there in an attempt to study past dewatering effects. Owners reported Chat several wells were dewatered by longwall mining arid vertical air shafts that preceded longwall mining. Dewatered wells over longwall panels hove shown some recovery within 3 ½ years of mining. Mine C also has relatively thick overburden (approximately 585-900 feet), and is located mostly in Greene County, Pennsylvania. In addition to a survey of domestic water supplies at this site, five specially constructed monitoring wells were tested. The shallow monitoring wells suffered drops in water level due to mining but totally recovered within one day to three weeks after dewatering occurred. However, they did occasionally exhibit partial collapse during mine subsidence. Subsidence fracturing was beneficial in increasing the lateral hydraulic conductivity by a factor of about S to 22 for rock strata located within 124 feet of the surface, indicating enhanced shallow aquifer potential. One deep well suffered both partial dewatering and structural damage, with the state of water recovery bring uncertain. Also, two shallow domestic supplies out of five located over the mine were reportedly dewatered, but this claim could not, be substantiated.

In a recent paper1 the authors presented information on a refinement of the Rohn type of creep test with data on pure iron that exemplified the behavior of the apparatus. The present paper extends that work to nickel and cobalt and to the examination of the comparative high-temperature properties of two widely used commercial alloys. Careful attention has been given to the effect of plastic deformation in decreasing creep rate, using the elementary metals iron, nickel and cobalt for purposes of analysis. In any endeavor to develop new materials for high-temperature service one soon encounters a real problem as to the sort of test to be employed in evaluating the commercial possibilities of the alloys. At one time it was considered satisfactory to determine the tensile strengths at elevated temperatures and to use these values as a criterion for the commercial application of the alloys. More recently the proportional limit has been used as a means of classification. Data obtained from a form of bend test have also shown promise as providing a "merit index" of high-temperature serviceability.= Koerber and Pomp3 state that since the influence of testing time is small, the high-temperature yield point of steel furnishes sufficiently reliable and concordant values up to about 350" C. (and a maximum of 450" C. for alloy steels) to serve as a suitable basis for comparison evaluations of materials and for judging permissible stresses. Koerber and Pomp consider, however, that above these temperatures creep limit must be substituted for the high-temperature yield point as the all-important characteristic of the material. AS a result of recent studies, the constitution of the zirconium-uranium system has been fairly well defined. A diagram for the system is shown in Fig. 1. However, both oxygen and nitrogen are known1-3 to have a pronounced effect on the limits of both ß- and e -phase regions. It has been shown that small amounts of oxygen severely constrict the compositional limits of these phase regions in the ternary zirconium-uranium-oxygen system. A previously published tentative diagram shown in Fig. 2 illustrates the ß-phase constriction resulting from oxygen additions. Generally, iodide zirconium has been used in constitutional studies of zirconium-uranium alloys. While this is the highest purity material available, cast iodide zirconium-uranium alloys will generally average from 200 to 300 ppm 0 and from 50 to 60 ppm N. Thus, while the constitution of the zirconium-uranium system is fairly well defined, it must be realized that this definition applies to alloys containing in the vicinity of 250 ppm 0 and 50 ppm N. In recent years many roof falls have been conveniently attributed to the adverse existence of a high horizontal stress. The normal practice of not conducting a follow-up study in a roof fall investigation usually leads to a wrong conclusion. This paper describes two cases of massive oriented roof falls in two separate room and pillar mines. The investigation in each case involved the analysis of past history and current conditions from which remedial measures were recommended and implemented. A follow-up period of up to three years was performed to evaluate the effectiveness of the recommended remedial measures. In both cases, high horizontal stress was proven positively not the cause, contrary to the original conviction of mine management Rather, a weak immediate roof was the basic cause Under a weak immediate roof, a proper roof bolting plan and adequate entry width and intersection span must be strictly observed.

IN order that the conditions which obtain in an oil well may be readily understood, a brief description of a typical California well and. a number of the phenomena accompanying same will be given. That the necessity for the exclusion of water be realized, the effects of water intrusion, a description of methods of prevention, and a discussion of causes of failure will be presented, followed by a summary and recommendations. Fig. 1 shows a section of a typical well which illustrates the relation of oil sands to overlying strata. It indicates a deep water sand separated from the oil sand by shale, and the proper place for the final shutting off of water. In this well a comparatively thick stratum of compact shale protected the oil from overlying water so that the operation of landing the water string was a simple matter. In some wells the protecting stratum may be only from 3 to 5 ft. thick and very careful operation is necessary in order to land the water string of casing properly and not puncture through to the oil sand. The cases just cited are common, but occasionally, after excluding overlying water, productive oil sands are drilled through in the expectation of finding more productive underlying sand, and a water-bearing stratum is tapped. In this case the problem is the reverse of the normal; water must be prevented from ascending rather than descending. A discussion of well-drilling methods is not within the scope of this paper, except such operations as pertain to shutting off of water. A brief outline of the several conditions which may accompany drilling follows. Some or all may be present in any particular case. The direct relation of these to prevention of intrusion will he discussed in detail further on. In drilling, the hole. becomes more or less irregular in shape, and rough, and as the casing follows the bit into the well it does not fit snugly against the walls. As a result, water may descend between the casing and walls of the well. If a circulation pump is not used during drilling, the hole is simply punched through and the pulverized material removed from the well by means of a bailer. If circulation is maintained there is a continual flow of water down inside the casing and up around the outside between the pipe and the walls of hole. This keeps an open. space around the pipe.

A RAPID glance over the history of The Mining Society of Nova Scotia shows that in its fifty years of service, which it is now rounding out, the Society has had an honourable career, rendered signal service to the mining industry of the Province, and helped to shape and improve legislation bearing on our mines and minerals, besicles publishing very many excellent papers and subsequent discussions thereon dealing with all subjects in its field of activity. THE GOLD MINERS? CLUB OF NOVA SCOTIA: The Society has the distinction of being generally regarded as the oldest mining fraternity in Canada ( 1). Iris the direct outgrowth or reorganization of The Gold Miners' Club of Nova Scotia, which was organized in March, 1887, at a period when the gold mining industry was very prominent in the Province. Mr. Geo. W. Stuart, who, in 1934, was the only living member of the parent association, informed me that the seventeen Charter Members of The Gold Miners' Club were John H. Anderson, Charles F. Andrews, A. B. Cox, Clarence H. Dimock, George E. Francklyn, L. W. Getchell, John E. Hardman, Alonzo A. Hayward, Major R. G. Leckie, W. L. Libbey, Edward M. McDonald, G. F. McNaughton, George A. Pyke, H. A. Sanders, C. E. Willis, Benjamin C. Wilson, and George W. Stuart. Others joined later in the same year.

Ventilation-air-heating plants are in use at several iron mines on the Menominee Iron Range, Iron River, Mich. Many of the mines are exceptionally wet; during winter months, when fresh air is forced down the wet air shafts into the mine, it is usually necessary to heat the fresh air to above freezing so that the openings will not be closed by ice. The problem of ice closing air shafts has been solved by the practice of reversing the air current before the openings have become completely closed. This procedure involves drawing warm air from the mine up the usual down-draft air shaft. The M. A. Hanna Co. has found, at some of their mines on the Menominee Range, that it is more convenient to heat the below-freezing air rather than reverse the air current. Intermittent freezing and thawing of ice that has formed in the air shaft tends to loosen the wall rock, requiring major shaft repairs. The openings are kept free of ice the year around by heating the fresh air during periods of below-freezing weather. Table 1 shows the monthly minimum moan, maximum mean, and mean temperatures for the Iron River area. Under normal conditions of temperature, the furnaces are fired in November and usually are not allowed to go out until April of the following year.

A total of 260 micropiles were installed as part of a retrofit effort for two existing bridges. The micropiles consisted of hollow core bars installed under limited headroom conditions. Of the total number of micropiles, 180 were installed in submerged sand and 80 were installed in stiff, silty clay. The micropiles were drilled using a lean cement grout which was re-circulated for de-sanding and re-use. Final grout was injected upon completion of drilling to the design tip elevation. The micropiles were subject to a rigorous quality control that included grout quality testing and proof-testing of each production micropile. This paper presents a description of the procedure for installation and quality control of the micropiles. The successful proof-testing of all the production micropiles showed that hollow core bar micropiles can be used effectively in granular and fine-grained soils. Hollow core bar micropiles offer particular advantages when installed in submerged sand formations with respect to other traditional micropile types. The results of the proof load tests are presented in a companion paper.

The Bureau of Mines has developed a systematic procedure for separation, characterization, and semiquantitative analysis of high-boiling (350° to 550° C) distillates of crude oils. Isothermal and molecular distillation were used to prepare the 370° to 530° C distillate of Recluse, Wyo., crude oil. The distillate was separated into fractions by chemical treatment, silica-alumina gel adsorption, and gel permeation chromatography (GPC). The fractions were analyzed by use of GPC correlations and mass and nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectrometry. The increased knowledge of petroleum composition obtained from the data will contribute to improved petroleum processing and utilization and energy conservation.

Este trabalho propõe avaliar a atuação do polietileno tereftalato (PET) como um agregado substituto na fabricação de concreto para pavers, pavimento intertravado com peças de concreto, a fim de minimizar os efeitos colaterais da construção civil. PET triturado substituiu o agregado natural, pó de pedra, nas porcentagens de 10%, 15% e 20% em massa. Os testes mecânicos de resistência à compressão realizado aos 28 dias mostraram que os corpos de prova moldados a partir dos traços substituídos apresentaram significativa melhora da resistência à compressão, que a substituição parcial de 10% em massa de PET atende ao recomendado pela NBR 9781 (2013) para concreto para pavimentação e que todos os concretos produzidos atendem a resistência mínima a compressão de 20 MPa, recomendado pela NBR 6118 (2003) para concreto estrutural.

The development of separation process for the wastewater treatment in distinct industrial process have been applied for recover water and inputs. Electrodialysis is an example of separation process that have been studied for electroplating wastewater treatment. The use of ion-exchange membranes and an electric energy allows the selectivity separation of ions in a solution. The 1-hydroxyethane-1,1diphosphonic acid HEDP is an organic acid that is has been applied for the cyanide substitution in electroplating baths, and in this condition the electrodialysis has showed recover potential. The ion-exchange membrane used in an electrodialysis process contain organic sample are exposed for extreme conditions. These conditions can provide degradation structure and loss of permselectivity, which causes unusual membrane properties. The aim of this study is evaluate the influence of CuHEDP complexes in synthetic ion-exchange membranes using electrochemical test.

O uso do nitrogênio como gás de injeção através de plug poroso no forno panela pode ser importante do ponto de vista econômico, no entanto pode provocar pick-up excessivo de nitrogênio caso seja realizado de forma inadequada. No presente trabalho, são apresentados os resultados de testes de injeção de nitrogênio e nitrogênio seguido de argônio em aços para produtos longos. Visando compreender os processos de absorção e sua cinética, um modelo cinético é formulado e ajustado aos dados experimentais. O modelo cinético clássico descreve bem os resultados experimentais e permite o uso para previsões do efeito da injeção de nitrogênio sobre o teor de nitrogênio no aço. Observa-se que a cinética de absorção é controlada pela agitação da panela e pela presença de elementos tenso-ativos, notadamente o oxigênio, como esperado, de acordo com os modelos clássicos do fenômeno. A técnica da injeção de nitrogênio seguida de argônio é bem-sucedida economicamente e o modelo permite a previsão e o controle da absorção de nitrogênio pelo aço.

Neste trabalho é estudado o efeito do ferro no tamanho de grão e nas propriedades mecânicas do latão UNS C26000, também comercialmente conhecido como latão 70/30. Foram avaliados dois teores residuais: 0,0069% e 0,0592%. As amostras foram inicialmente laminadas até a espessura de 2,30 mm, submetidas a tratamento térmico de recozimento objetivando tamanho de grão de 0,030 mm. Posteriormente as amostras foram laminadas para outras três espessuras e submetidas a um novo recozimento. As amostras recozidas passaram por análise de tamanho de grão e foram submetidas a ensaios de tração, sendo obtidos resultados de limite de resistência à tração. Os comportamentos apresentados pelos materiais foram distintos entre si, sendo que o material com maior teor de ferro apresentou aumento das propriedades mecânicas em função do aumento da redução de espessura e o material com menor teor ferro apresentou redução do limite de resistência à tração. Quanto ao tamanho de grão, o material com menor teor de ferro apresentou pequena variação de tamanho de grão após o recozimento, enquanto o material com maior teor de ferro apresentou redução do tamanho de grão em função do aumento da redução de espessura, demonstrando inibição do crescimento de grão e estrutura heterogênea.

"The size distribution of coal mine dust is one of its most important characteristics because the particle size is known to govern the region of deposition of dust within the human respiratory tract. In addition, dust characteristics, particle settling rate, transportability of the dust and the efficiency of dust control measures are all affected by the particle size. As a result, particle size distribution of the airborne dust in a coal mine is a fundamental property that impacts on the health of underground workers.This paper deals with some basic findings on the size distribution of cool mine dust based upon the results of data collection in six underground coal mines using continuous miners. All airborne dust sampling was performed on development sections using eight stage cascade impactors and permissible 2. O l / min pumps. Samplers locations were fixed in the sections with respect to the continuous miner and roofbolter or with respect to the intake and return airways • Sampling times varied from 45 minutes to 6 hours , depending upon the dust concentration. The first topic of analysis was the test to determine whether the commonly used lognonnal distribution is valid when applied to airborne coal mine dust. Secondly, the conventional method of representing the· distribution using two parameters, the geometric mean and the geometric standard deviation, is questioned. Since almost all size data were found to show some degree of bimodality, the two parameter lognonnal distribution may not represent the total airborne coal mine dust size , quite adequately. Bimodal lognonnal distribution was tested to be a good approximation in the case with two modes in the size distribution.The final topic discussed in this paper is the 'locational variation of the airborne dust size distributions within the continuous mining section. The size distributions varied considerably at the different sampling locations with the continuous miner and roofbolter producing the coarser distributions. Fine size modes in the range of 2 to 4µ m including mostly respirable dust particles were present in almost all samples • Second dust generating sources such as the shuttle car movement were found to be major causes of high respirable dust concentrations in some cases ."

"The object of this paper is to outline a computerized net cash flow approach for practical cutoff grade determinations. A cutoff grade carries not only geological but also economic value, in which costs are balanced against revenues. For different situations, cutoff grades are a 'standard of value' that are determined for the purpose of classifying economic or uneconomic mineral reserves in a specified time frame. In a constantly changing technical and economic environment, the decision to develop or maintain a mining operation at its best economic potential, requires an appropriate cutoff grade strategy, a strategy consistent with short- and long-term operational and corporate objectives and one based on realistic marketing and metal prices forecasts. The use of a project evaluation computer program, in combination with specific corporate net cash flow requirements, shows the most promising and flexible team approach for cutoff grade optimization.IntroductionThe recent recession has had a devastating effect on the Canadian mining industry. Exploration and mining R&D expenditures have been critically reduced and now are believed to be below healthy levels. Ore reserves, mine life and cutoff grades are careening in several directions because of low base metal prices, relatively high costs and sensitive precious metal prices.These conditions demand an improved understanding of the terms ""ore"" and ""cutoff grades"" as they are applied to the planning process and day-to-day operations. ""Ore"" or 'ore reserves"" is a dynamic concept, reflecting a cumulative effect of changes in geological, technical and economic conditions in terms of material which can be mined at a potential profit. By contrast, if economics are not the primary consideration, the term ""mineral reserve"" or ""mineral inventory"" should be used to describe the mineral deposit. For different situations, cutoff grade is ""a standard of value"" determined for the purpose of classifying mineral reserves as economic or uneconomic in a specified time frame. The question of mining at average reserve grade or low-grade material during high metal prices is of paramount importance for cutoff grade strategy."
