ABSTRACTThis paper describes the main testing procedures that should be carried out to evaluate the capacity and capability of the service brakes on the large-size diesel-electric trucks now in common use at open-pit mining operations. Brake testing programs in general are described, and then consideration is given to different techniques of service brake testing, brake performance evaluation, braking energy and typical performance characteristics.IntroductionThe first diesel-electric truck with a capacity of about 85 tons was introduced in 1963 by Unit Rig and Equipment Company of Tulsa in cooperation with General Electric Company, who successfully developed and supplied the most important component- motorized wheels. Since then, its popularity and numbers have continued to grow, and now more than 3700 such units are in operation in mines around the world. In Canada alone, their number is more than 700, including about 150 in the Province of Newfoundland and Labrador. Similarly, their size has also grown from that initial capacity of 85 tons to 350 tons.Although the introduction of the electric trucks proved to be invariably economical, their indiscriminate use was not without severe consequences. Many runaways and even fatalities occurred when the dynamic retarder failed while the truck was travelling loaded down severe grades. The service brakes in such cases proved incapable of stopping runaway trucks, mainly due to their limited capability and the fading caused by excessive heat produced during the act of braking itself. This eventually led the various governments, the open-pit operators and the manufacturers to seriously question the braking capability as well as function of both service brakes and dynamic retarders. Accurate mechanical and geological information of the roof strata is vital for roof bolting design in underground mines. In order to obtain such information in a timely manner, a research has been under way to develop a technology for mapping the roof geology using the drilling parameters acquired during the roof bolting operations. In this paper, a systematic approach has been proposed for determining the rock strengths using the acquired real-time drilling parameters. A computer simulation program based on the mathematic model has been developed to verify the approach and to study its sensitivity. The method has been used to interpret the acquired drilling data.

Recientes estudios en la ingeniería de voladura de rocas señalan herramientas modernas, como es el caso del sistema JKSimBlast, que han permitido a Shougang Hierro Perú avanzar en la ingeniería del diseño de voladura de rocas desde el diseño original hasta el actual. En ese sentido, el presente texto describe el sistema del diseño, modelamiento, simulación y administración de voladura en la integración de la empresa Shougang Hierro Perú S.A.A. El diseño consiste en modelar cálculos complejos para realizar las modificaciones apropiadas en el diseño y lograr una voladura que convierta al macizo rocoso in-situ en un muckpile de forma apropiada, suelto, con una fragmentación adecuada para los procesos subsecuentes como carguío, acarreo, chancado, molienda etc y que no cause daño por vibración e impacto por presión de onda aérea al entorno de la mina.

OBJECT THE experiments herein described were undertaken with a view to investigating thoroughly the influence of carbon on the tensile and impact physical properties of carbon steel. The original comprehensive plan included investigation of a series of steels with varying carbon contents over a wide range of heat treatments. These were to be studied as to their static tensile qualities, and also their resistance to shock as measured by the Charpy impact bending test. A thorough metallographic examination was likewise included in the schedule. The Charpy tests and the metallographic examination have not been completed to date, and are accordingly withheld for another report. All heat treatments, however, have been made, and the static tensile tests have been completed. A description of the procedure of the experiment and the results thus far obtained are therefore reported herein. CONCLUSIONS No attempt is made to draw general conclusions from these experiments, but the curves and the data are submitted as being of general importance and wide applicability.

In order to test the performance of ZrO, (CaO) and Tho,(Yz03) electrolytes in the electrochemical determination of oxygen activities in liquid metals at steel-rrzakitng temperatures , electromotive force measurements have been made with the following cells: The oxygen-- activities are calculated from the electmrnotive forces for the investigated systems. The standard free energy of- formation of MnO and the activity of manganese in Fe-Mn melts are derived. Indications are that the Zr 0z(Ca0) electrolyte exhibits little electronic conductivity at oxygen pressures as low as 10'a atnz at 1600°C; however, the partial electronic conductivity may become noticeable at lower oxygen activities. The Tho,(Yz03) electrolyte is found to be an ionic conductor at the oxygen pressure as low as that for the Mn + MnO equilibrium, but exhibits partial electronic conductivity at oxygen pressures higher than 10"1 atm (1500°C). fi. better control of oxidation and deoxidation reactions in steelmaking may be facilitated if the oxygen activity in the steel is known during various stages of the process. In the present work oxygen activities have been measured in liquid iron, manganese, and iron alloys with galvanic cells using ZrOz(CaO) and s solid electrolytes with the object of establishing the range of oxygen pressure in which these materials can be used as electrolytes at steelmaking temperatures. Calcia-stabilized zirconia and Tho2-Y203 solid solutions are oxygen ion conductors. Such electrolytes were first used by Kiukkola and Wagner1 and Peters and ~ann' in galvanic cells for the determination of thermodynamicquantities of oxide systems in the temperature range 700" to 1200°C. At these moderate temperatures calcia-stabilized zirconia has been found to exhibit predominantly ionic conductivity at oxygen pressures as low as those for the Cr + Crz03 equilibrium,394 but at lower oxygen pressures elec- tronic contribution to conductivity becomes significants4 The Th02-Y203 solid solutions are ionic conductors at oxygen pressures lower than those applicable to zirconia base electrolytes.5'6 At high oxygen pressures Thoz base electrolytes exhibit significant p-type semiconduction. At the time the present experiments were carried out several papers1'-* were published on the electrochemical determination of oxygen activities in liquid iron using the ZrOz(CaO) electrolyte. The results of different authors do not agree well. For instance, according to Fischer and ~ckermann" stabilized zirconia can be used to measure oxygen contents in liquid iron larger than 0.02 wt pct, but according to Baker and west1' ZrOz(CaO) cannot be used for the determination of oxygen content in liquid iron because of high electronic contribution to the conductivity. Fig. 1 is a schematic diagram of the apparatus used. About 500 g of liquid metal is contained in a crucible into which a stabilized zirconia or Th02(Y203) tube is immersed. A platinum contact wire is pressed (with a spring mechanism) against the inside bottom wall of the electrolyte tube. The tube is flushed continuously with a stream of air, CO-CO, (or Hz-C02) (at 0.96 atm and at a rate of about 300 cu cm per min), via an alumina tube inserted inside the electrolyte tube. This alumina tube also contains the Pt-Pt/10 pct Rh thermocouple. A capillary alumina tube shielding the other contact wire is immersed in the melt. The molybdenum contact wires were used mostly; in some cases platinum wire was employed. Molybdenum has the advantage that it dissolves more slowly in the melt than platinum. The whole cell was contained in the alumina reaction tube of a resistance furnace with molybdenum winding. The reaction tube was closed gas tight at both ends and flushed continuously with argon. Chemical composition, mineral composition, and iron occurrence state of main mineral are studied, Research of mineral processing technology is carried out according to ore features. The test results indicate, that through staged grinding-staged concentration process, the better separation index is up to 65.54%, iron preparation concentrate grade and 85.66% recovery with the fineness (-200 mesh) 45.88% in the primary grinding ore and the fineness (-200 mesh) 75.50%, in secondary grinding ore in the situation of best magnetic field intensity (roughing 0.2T and cleaning 0.15T).

In 1777, the French naturalist, Georges Louis Leclerc, Compte de Buffon developed a statistical technique to estimate the width between two parallel lines by randomly throwing a needle at the two lines and counting the number of times the needle intersected one of the two lines. By knowing the length of the needle, the distance between the parallel lines could be estimated. This analysis was named the “Buffon’s Needle Problem”.

"A joint federal/provincial/industry subcommittee of the Intergovernmental Working Group on the Mineral Industry (IOWG) has published an informative and readable report on taxation matters concerning Canada's mining industry. The report, which was presented to the federal and provincial mines ministers in September 1986, identifies and discusses key tax issues relating to this industry. The report is mandatory reading for anybody with an interest in mineral exploration or production in Canada.IntroductionIn 1986, Canada's federal and provincial mines ministers were presented with an important report concerning the taxation of this country's mining industry. This document is important for a number of reasons, two of the reasons being: first, the report contains an objective analysis of the key mineral taxation issues of the day; and, second, the report is the product of a cooperative exercise involving representatives of various facets of the industry and government. The report should be regarded as compulsory reading for anybody who has an interest in fiscal matters affecting mineral exploration and production.The ""Report on Fiscal Proposals"" was prepared by a subcommittee of the Intergovernmental Working Group on the Mineral Industry (IOWO). The Bureau of Mines assisted the Rocky Mountain Energy Co. in a pilot-scale in situ leaching experiment at Casper, Wyo., to determine if sulfuric acid can be used as a cost-effective alternative lixiviant (leachant) for uranium in situ leaching. This experiment, which lasted more than 2 years, is the first fully documented pilot-scale operation in which the leaching-restoration cycle was completed using sulfuric acid instead of the more common carbonate-bicarbonate leachant This report describes activities at the experimental site, presents extensive geochemical data from startup to site restoration, compares laboratory and field experiments, and discusses the environmental aspects of acid leaching. The data showed that sulfuric acid is apparently an effective leaching solution. Three to five grams of acid per liter of ground water resulted in a production solution grade of 80 to 100 ppm uranium. Restoration was successful, but required extended flushing. The pH was the last chemical parameterto return to baseline, requiring about 350 days. This was longer than was predicted in laboratory simulations. The data also showed that mobilization of toxic elements such as selenium, arsenic, radium, thorium, and molybdenum stayed within reasonable limits and quickly fell back to preleach concentrations during restoration.

In this paper a new technology for a compact iron ore sintering machine is analyzed. The compact sintering process is based on the massive injection of gaseous fuels and the solid fuel is only agglomerated fine charcoal obtained by biomass. The solid fuel used in this study is obtained by agglomeration of fine charcoal produced from elephant glass which has very short period for production and CO2 capture(less than 6 months in tropical climate). To overcome the lower heat supply into the combustion front of the sintering process the simultaneous injection of oxygen and gaseous fuel is proposed. The proposed methodology is to combine the solid fuel (agglomerated fines charcoal) and steelworks gases in a compact machine to enhance heat and mass transfer with high productivity (about 5 times the conventional large machine). A multiphase mathematical model based on transport equations of momentum, energy and chemical species coupled with chemical reaction rates and phase transformations is used to analyze the inner process parameters. A base case representing a possible actual industrial operation of the sintering machine is used in order to compare different scenarios of practicable operations which represents advanced operations techniques. The model was used to predict six cases of combined operation with biomass and fuel gas utilization with oxygen support.

Este estudo tem como objetivo apresentar as etapas, os desafios e melhorias na implantação da área da logística da Companhia Siderúrgica do Pecém (CSP) na primeira Zona de Processamento de Exportação (ZPE) do país que está localizada no estado do Ceará e tem a siderúrgica CSP como a primeira empresa a se instalar nessa área de livre comércio com o exterior. Nesse contexto a logística tem um papel importante e fundamental no planejamento e controle minucioso dos fluxos de entrada e saída de materiais e produtos cumprindo todas as legislações federais e estaduais de uma ZPE. O estudo é realizado através da análise dos conceitos logísticos de uma siderúrgica e das normas e portarias que regem uma ZPE. Os resultados alcançados estão pautados nas sugestões e alterações das disposições legais e na integração entre os sistemas controlados pela Receita Federal com o sistema da CSP. O estudo tem como conclusão que todas as melhorias que foram propostas e alcançadas nessa implantação pioneira, proporcionaram maior eficiência e agilidade nos processos de controle aduaneiro da ZPE voltados para uma siderúrgica, mantendo continuamente a interação entre todas as entidades legais sem impactar a dinâmica operacional da siderúrgica, agregando grande valor para a CSP.

Em muitas situações, o tempo de resposta de uma empresa para adaptar-se a uma nova necessidade, estratégia ou tecnologia determina o sucesso ou fracasso da iniciativa. As soluções MOM, como responsáveis pelo gerenciamento da produção, possuem um papel fundamental no intuito de facilitar a adaptação da empresa a uma nova realidade. Nesse contexto, a adaptabilidade e a flexibilidade das ferramentas MOM tornam-se fatores extremamente relevantes no momento de definição de um produto ou concepção de uma solução. Este trabalho tem como objetivo refletir sobre o papel das soluções MOM como acelerador de mudanças dentro das indústrias. Serão apresentadas as características principais de um sistema MOM preparado para o cenário dinâmico atual, bem como alguns critérios para avaliação da adaptabilidade e flexibilidade de uma solução MOM.

Mercury is one of the strategic metals the supply of which has been raised from critical uncertainty to more than enough for essential demands. Work by the Bureau of Mines has contributes substantially to increased production of mercury in the United States and to consequent accumulation of Governments stock. Other contributing factors were higher prices for mercury and Government loans to operators. The Bureau has undertaken 15 exploration projects, 13 of which have been completed. This work comprised 40,307 feet of drilling arid 35,082 linear feet of sure ace trenching and has indicated commercial ore containing 37,400 flasks of mercury and marginal ore contain¬ing 29,200 flasks - a total of 66,600 flask , equivalent, respectively, to domestic production at 50,000 flasks per year for 9 months , 7 months, and 16 months. Early in 1944, as Government stocks had become adequate, domestic production was gradually curtailed cancellation of Government contracts for the purchase of mercury and Government control of labor and operating supplies.

The increasing scale of mining operations over the past decade, particularly in connection with the exploitation of large bodies of comparatively low-grade copper ores, has made necessary the study of the behavior of rock under failure. When extractions of as high as 40,000 tons a day are reached in steam-shovel operations and as high as 20,000 tons per day in underground mining operations, it is evident that excavations soon become of such size that the behavior of the rock will often be dependent on fundamental principles applicable to more or less homogeneous materials under stress, rather than on weathering or local planes of weakness. In the ordinary rock excavations encountered in civil-engineering practice, such as excavations for subways, highways, railroads, etc., rock faces are not carried to depths sufficient to develop any pressures, or consequently any failures, except those due to loose masses resulting from local planes of weakness. When, however, orebodies whose tonnage is measured by hundreds of thousands are to be extracted by steam-shovel operations in open pits, it is necessary to determine if possible in advance the slopes that the sides of the pits will assume, for these slopes influence the shape of the excavations and thereby the amount of ore that may be extracted by the open-pit method. When large orebodies are mined underground at depths of 300 to 500 ft. (91 to 152 m.) by caving methods, the surface subsiding as the ore is withdrawn, it is necessary to determine in advance the outermost limits of fracture in the subsiding surface, for on the delineation of these limits depends the location of surface improvements, mills, smelters, etc. and also the location of development work, such as hoisting shafts, main haulage levels, and all other underground openings that must remain undisturbed during the period of ore extraction. Heretofore, in civil-engineering practice, it has been assumed that earth and rock behave differently in failure. For the calculation of earth pressures, formulas are used in which the assumption is made that earth banks fail by sliding along the slope determined by the frictional resistance of the material. Magnesium-rich olivine is used as an additive in LKABÆs iron ore pellets in order to improve the high-temperature properties of the finished products. Olivine is only added to the pellets that are manufactured for ironmaking in the blast furnace process. The olivine comes from Minelco/LKABÆs mine at Seqi in Greenland. This dunite complex of Archean age contains about 95 - 98 per cent olivine. The grain size is typically 1 - 3 mm but much larger euhedral olivine crystals are common in the porphyritic type. The serpentinisation is absent or weak. The most common minor minerals are chromite, chlorite, talc, phlogopite, amphibole and pyroxene. The crushed olivine is transported to LKABÆs pelletising plants in Northern Sweden. After grinding, small amounts of olivine are mixed with the magnetite concentrate. The concentrate is rolled into green balls, about 10 - 14 mm in diameter. The moist green balls are transferred into the pelletising machine where the maximum temperature is about 1250¦C. The residence time in the pelletising machine is about one hour. Olivine is used in order to get pellets with better high-temperature properties. This paper deals with the olivine alteration during the pelletising process and the behaviour of magnesium following the decomposition of magnetite. The reactions are quite complex in the pellets because the physico-chemical conditions vary considerably in the process from one process step to another, and in the pellet bed from the top to the bottom. Some olivine particles in the finished product show very slight alteration, some particles are completely decomposed. The formation of the iron-rich coronas around the olivine particles is the most typical alteration. In the finished pellets the magnesium is mainly distributed between the following phases: unaltered olivine, coronas, Mg/Fe-ferrite and silicate slag.

"The Kemess porphyry copper-molybdenum deposit occurs in the Intermontane Belt of north-central British Columbia. The deposit is in andesitic to basaltic flows and tuffs which may be correlated with the Savage Mountain Formation of the Upper Triassic Takla Group. Most known chalcopyrite and molybdenite is associated closely with a 500-m-diameter zone of intense quartz-sericite-pyrite alteration. A zone of supergene enrichment, up to 30 m thick, underlies a leached capping about 20 m thick. The age of mineralization and the surrounding granodiorite and quartz monzonite pluton is Early Jurassic. K-Ar and Rb-Sr analyses indicate that the mineralization and alteration is slightly younger (l82±6 Ma) than the granitic intrusion (KAr: about 205±6 Ma; Rb-Sr: 190±4 Ma). The low 87Sr/J6Sr initial ratio for the granodiorite is typical of plutons in the Intermontane Belt.IntroductionKemess is a medium to small porphyry copper-molybdenum deposit with significant gold and silver values (Pilcher and McDougall, 1976). This paper describes the lithologies and alteration at this property; geochronology by Rb-Sr and K-Ar methods defines the ages of mineralization and surrounding plutons to be Early Jurassic.The property, located in the Thutade Lake area of northcentral British Columbia (NTS Map 94E; lat. 57°04'N; long. 126°44'W), is about 425 km northwest of Prince George (Fig. 1). Closest road access is 35 km southeast of Kemess. Final access must be by float plane or helicopter. The British Columbia Railway right of way passes 70 km to the southwest of theproperty.A prominent gossan zone at Kemess was staked in 1967 by Kennco Explorations (Western) Ltd. following detection of geochemical anomalies during stream sampling the previous year. During 1968, 1969and 1971, Kennco completed 232 m of X-ray diamond drilling, conducted geological mapping and carried out geochemical sampling of silts and soils (Stevenson, 1969; B.C. Ministry of Energy, Mines and Petroleum Resources, G.E .M., 1969 and 1971). Getty Mines Ltd. optioned Kemess in 1975and 1976. They remapped the area and diamond drilled 12 BQ and NQ holes, totalling 2065 m (B.C. Ministry of Energy, Mines and Petroleum Resources, Expl. B.C., 1975)."

"Graphite is one of the most versatile of non-metallic minerals because of its diversified properties, for example: it is unctuous; it marks readily; burns slowly; is almost chemically inert; is flexible over a large temperature range; is a good conductor of heat and electricity; is hydrophobic; has a negative temperature coefficient of resistivity; has excellent weathering properties; tends to emulsify with water-in-oil; is readily soluble in iron; and after oxidative treatment, can exfoliate like vermiculite. These properties give rise to its major uses in lubrication, refractories, marking instruments, electrical products and paints.Flake graphite is the variety which commonly occurs in Canada; the provinces of Ontario and Quebec contain the deposits of economic significance, although graphite occurs in other provinces. The beneficiation of graphite has been the subject of many investigations at CANMET, thus reflecting graphite 's importance as an industrial mineral. Thirty-eight studies relating to various aspects of beneficiation were conducted between 1918and 1989anda review of some of the more important studies is presented. The information includes mineralogy, beneficiation methods and results; flotation parameters and reagent concentration data are presented in tabular form. By so arranging the principal data, the research worker and production metallurgist will be assisted in the evaluation of graphite ores from a variety of origins."

The physical properties and clay mineral content of the major oil-producing formations in the Powder River Basin of Wyoming were determined by analyses of cores from 100 wells. Interrelationships were established among permeability, restored water saturation, clay content, and bulk swelling capacity of the crushed sample and used to estimate the susceptibility of the formations to water damage. The ratio of water permeability to gas permeability (kw/ki) offers a convenient scale for semiquantitatively estimating the water sensitivity of sands. The irreducible water saturation was also found to have a similar relationship to the clay mineral content and the water sensitivity of the sands. The average relation of water permeability to gas permeability is different for each sand, as shown by the curves, and the relative positions of the curves indicate the degree of water sensitivity of each sand from which the susceptibility to water damage may be estimated. How accurately these estimates show formation behavior under field operations will not be known until studies of field performance can be made. The water permeabilities of the Muddy, Minnelusa, and Tensleep sands average about the same as the gas permeabilities, and these sands are classified as insensitive. The water permeabilities of the Sussex and Shannon sands, at the other extreme, are much less than the gas permabilities [when average ki is 30 millidarcys (md), kw is 6.1 md], and these sands are classified as highly water sensitive. The sensitivities of the five other sands are between these extremes.
