The presentation describes the operation and field test results of a seafloor massive sulphide prospecting system. The prospecting system is deployed from a work-class ROV, and it features a new and innovative electromagnetic ocean floor conductivity sensor. It also includes magnetometers, a multibeam sonar, and subsea cameras. The prospecting system has been used in two exploration campaigns - one in the territorial waters of Papua New Guinea (PNG) in 2007 and again in 2008 in both PNG and Tonga waters. The 2007 campaign used the prototype sensor, and the 2008 campaign used a Mark II version. Correlations between drill core samples and EM conductivity results are excellent. New prospecting system data will be used to help plan future core drilling locations. The presentation discusses the principle of operation of the EM conductivity sensor, discusses improvements made in the EM sensor and the overall prospecting system, and shows exploration results. "The demand for fine and ultra-fine grinding associated with the processing of more challenging, finer grained orebodies and the global driver of minimising energy consumption has been an increased focus in our industry. Outotec’s stirred milling technology, the high intensity grinding mill (HIGmill™), was launched in 2012 in response to this industry need. First Quantum Minerals Ltd selected HIGmill™ technology for its Kevitsa mine in Northern Finland. The 700 kW mill is grinding copper rougher concentrate to improve copper/nickel separation and copper recovery. Selection of the HIGmill™ followed mineralogy analysis and laboratory and pilot testing for HIG milling in parallel with flotation tests to determine optimum grind size and energy input.The paper discusses the challenges and successes of the test work, manufacture, installation, commissioning and subsequent operation of the mill. Grinding performance is presented and a comparison between predicted and operating energy efficiency is made. Resin-grouted bolts serve as a crucial means of stabilizing yielded coal ribs in underground coal mines. A comprehensive investigation into their efficacy was undertaken by a collaborative effort between the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) and Missouri University of Science and Technology (MST). This study involved pull-out tests in multiple locations, including six coal mines and the NIOSH research mine. A total of seventy-three (73) tests were conducted, of wide range of anchorage lengths, ranging from a short encapsulation length of 0.305 m to a fully grouted encapsulation length of 1.524 m. The test findings indicate that when short encapsulation bolts are installed at high rotation speeds, their anchorage capacity is significantly reduced, leading to failure at the bolt-grout interface. Conversely, when these bolts are installed at lower rotation speeds, they exhibit greater capacity, with failure occurring at a higher anchorage load equivalent to the yield load of steel rebar. No matter what the rotational speeds were used during bolt installation in this study, the fully grouted bolts consistently experienced failure at the ultimate load of the steel rebar. Most of the tests carried out on partially grouted bolts with anchorage lengths of 0.610 - 0.914 m have shown behavior patterns like the fully grouted bolts, although exhibiting reduced stiffness. The outcomes of this research offer a profound insight into the ways in which resin-grouted bolts enhance the stability of coal mine ribs.

Nevertheless, the selection of R&D projects is complex, often influenced by subjective judgments and uncertainties. This paper explores the application of the Multicriteria Decision Analysis (MCDA) as a structured approach to evaluate and prioritize innovation projects based on various criteria such as safety, cost, environmental impact, and social acceptability. By assigning weights and quantifying criteria, MCDA enhances decision-making transparency and objectivity. This study aims to show a method that facilitates strategic thinking, resource optimization, and stakeholder engagement, ensuring that selected innovations align with the company’s long-term objectives and commitment to responsible mining practices.

Bougainville Copper Limited (BCL) ships about 600,000 dry tonnes of copper concentrate per annum to Japan, Germany and Spain, with some spot sales to other countries. Concentrate sales value for 1984 was 335 million US$, representing almost half of PNG exports. Contained metal determination is based on physical and chemical measurements on representative samples. The entire procedure is subject to statistical uncertainties and possible systematic errors; losses as high as several percent of contained copper or gold are common and frequently are regarded as unavoidable. In this context, the function of the chemical laboratory is to identify and eliminate such errors and recommend correct technical procedures for possible inclusion in sales contracts. BCL's marketing management has encouraged this approach and the close buyer versus seller agreement is beneficial for all parties involved. BCL participates in the respective technical committees of the Standards Association of Australia (SAA) and the International Standards Organisation (ISO). Standard methods for sampling and analysis of copper, lead and zinc ores and concentrates are in course of preparation, some being due for publication shortly.

In December 1994, Polaris decided to investigate the use of cemented rockfill (CRF) to supplement the existing frozen rockfill system. Extraction plans for the remaining ore reserves required a backfill with superior stiffness proper-ties and capable of developing high early strengths. Although CRF has been used success-fully at several mining operations, there was the additional challenge of making a reliable cemented product in permafrost conditions. There was also the challenge of procuring and storing one year’s supply (13 000 tonnes) of bulk cement. By the spring of 1995, following three months of research, test work and process design, the decision was made to proceed with the procurement and construction of a 3000 tpd batch plant. An ambitious completion date of December 1995 was set. Team Manufacturing of Langley, British Columbia was awarded the contract, complete with the considerable task of having the batch plant fabricated and ready for sea lift shipment by August, 1995.

A considerable range of composition exists in rocks that have been described as chert, jasper, or flint. Their composition may be opaline, chalcedonic, quartzose, or mixed. Certain cherts, when incorporated in concrete, are known to possess nondesirable thermal and chemical properties. The inability of chert to withstand thermal shock above the freezing temperature of water is an example of such a property. Cryothermal reactions may cause disintegration of concrete, due to repeated cycles of freeze and thaw. Thermal properties are significant because small temperature changes may cause inordinate expansion and resultant fissuring of concrete. Freezing of entrained water in chert may cause excessive physical failure in concrete. Some cherts react chemically with alkalies liberated during the hydration of the cement, with resultant cracking and deterioration. Sources of concrete aggregate in Ohio have been viewed with suspicion because they contain considerable chert derived from Middle Devonian and Pennsylvanian carbonate rocks. Light-colored porous cherts from the Middle-Devonian Colum- bus Limestone exhibit the least freeze-thaw durability of the samples studied. Denser cherts may also yield to freeze-thaw stresses, but tend to be more susceptible to thermal shock. Cherts rich in opaline and chalcedonic silica usually exhibit alkali-aggregate reactivity.

The Pinto Valley concentrator of BHP Copper Inc. restarted its sulfide mining operations in September 2007 to produce copper and molybdenum concentrates. During the plant production ramp up, the copper/molybdenum circuit quickly reached the copper grade and recovery targets, but the production and quality of the molybdenum concentrate continued to be a challenge. Even though several improvements in the molybdenum circuit were completed, the final molybdenum concentrate did not meet contractual specifications. After reviewing several options to improve grade and reduce contaminants, the installation of three flotation columns were chosen. The column design and construction were done using in-house craftsmen and engineers. Ten days after commissioning, the columns successfully reached a steady operation and began producing molybdenum concentrate to the required specifications, that is, high molybdenum tenors and low copper and iron content. The Pinto Valley operations, are comprised of the Pinto Valley concentrator, the Pinto Valley dump leaching and a solvent extraction/electrowinning (SX/EW) plant. The concentrator operated from 1972 to 1998 when mining and milling operations were curtailed for economic reasons. The SX/EW plant continued operations for copper cathode production. After a cessation of mining operations of almost 10 years, Pinto Valley operations began a restart project in January 2007, to bring the mine and the concentrator back into production. Copper concentrate production started in October 2007 after refurbishing and upgrading the facilities with a new DCS system and filter plant. The daily targets of the concentrator were to treat 56.7 kt (62,500 st) of ore, produce 762 t (840 st) of copper concentrate containing 27.5 percent copper at recoveries of 86 percent and produce 2.2 t (2.5 st) of molybdenum concentrate containing more than 80 percent MoS2.

Over the last four years, a major collaboration between CSIRO-MIS, UCT and JKMRC has produced two significant advances in the modelling of comminution. The Universal Comminution Model (UCM) uses parametric SPH/DEM studies of comminution and separation devices to calibrate mathematical models which are suitable for industrial use. The Virtual Comminution Machine (VCM) uses the same computationally intensive techniques based on discrete element modelling (DEM) and smoothed particle hydrodynamics (SPH) to directly model any comminution device by combining a CAD file describing the machine design, sophisticated ore characterisation methods and advanced particle scale flow and breakage simulation. The UCM should be useful for process analysis and optimisation of existing equipment and circuits while the VCM should make a major contribution to the evaluation and development of new machines. Progress to date is encouraging with several processes now well described using DEM. This paper also reports on progress towards combining DEM for particles with a realistic slurry model based on SPH for different types of comminution devices. In due course, this combination should allow accurate modelling of particle transport in wet mills to be combined with DEM models.

The Monsanto Company's Henry Mine is located 17 miles northeast of Soda Springs, in the southeast corner of Idaho. Ore being mined is phosphate rock which lies in the Permian Phosphoria formation. The ore is the raw material for Monsanto's three furnace elemental "P" plant near Soda Springs. The finished product from the furnaces is elemental phosphorus which is subsequently used in the manufacture of detergents, food preservatives, fire retardants and other consumer items. Mining is by open pit methods using 0-9 crawler tractors to rip and push-load rubber tired scrapers in stripping and mining operations. The equipment spread consists of six D-9G crawler tractors, four Caterpillar 6578 scrapers, eight Euclid S-24 scrapers, one Reich T750 drill and one Caterpillar No. 16 patrol plus various support equipment. Stripping is performed on a 12-month basis, two shifts per day. Mining is performed mainly in the summer months on a one shift basis. The hauling season begins May 15 and ends November 1 due to freezing weather and snow conditions. Annual production is 1,000,000 tons of phosphate rock and 2,500,000 to 3,000,000 yards of stripping. Stripping, mining and hauling is performed for Monsanto by Dravo-Soda Springs, a mining contractor. Dravo-Soda Springs owns, operates and maintains all equipment used in stripping, mining and hauling. The contractor is paid for stripping by the bank yard and for ore mined and hauled on a tonnage basis. The Monsanto elemental phosphorus plant began production in 1952 with ore being trucked to the plant from the Ballard Mine. Haulage was over public roads in 15, 24-ton semitrucks. A private haul road was constructed from the Ballard Mine to the Monsanto Plant in 1958 and 1959 to accommodate trucks with two twenty-yard trailers. This 11/ mile road was first used in the 1959 hauling season. In 1965, five new Kenworth tractors with two, 'forty yard trailers were introduced into the haulage system. The authors are to be congratulated for their interesting article, which thoroughly illustrates the variables inherent in filtration of taconite concentrate. The work and the conclusions based thereon largely parallel the test work done by the writer at the Pilotac plant* and the experience gained with a commercial size agitating disk filter in the same plant. At Pilotac, however, a thorough study was also made of the effect of depolarizing (demagnetizing) the filter feed, and it is the purpose of this discussion to comment on the merits of depolarization of the magnetite concentrate prior to filtering. The work at Pilotac was done in three phases: 1) preliminary laboratory testing with a circular filter leaf of 0.047 sq ft, followed by 2) plant testing using a 4-ft diam, single-disk agitating filter that was purchased on the basis of the pilot tests on the 4-ft model. In the laboratory tests depolarization was achieved by slowly withdrawin4 batches of thickened concentrate from a coil producing an alternating field of about 300 oersteds. In plant tests the standard Pilotac procedure1 was employed, wherein the pulp falls freely through the depolarizing coil.

Excavation in underground jointed rock masses creates cavities into which the surrounding rock mass deforms. Deformations, besides intact rock deformation, include mechanistic deformations such as slip and rotation. In this paper deformational moduli were measured for prototype and blocky (jointed) models using elastic analogue methods for stopes from MIM LimitedÆs Lead Mine. The blocks for the models were defined in terms of the prototypeÆs joint sets, their spatial separations, orientations and average friction characteristics. From dimensional analyses, a relationship between prototype and model deformations was used to predict stope mid-span deformations. The results of this physical modelling work, conducted in the 1970s, motivated an investigation into the electro-treatment of tailings backfill to achieve improved strength and stiffness characteristics. Tailings backfill containing fines and having a high clay content can be electrically dewatered, and at times grouted, cemented, ion exchanged or agglutinated, to achieve relatively high magnitudes of strength and stiffness. These treated tailings stiffnesses can reduce the deformation magnitudes within a rock mass and, in doing so, reduce problems encountered in mine pillar extraction. The application of these tailings modification techniques is examined in relation to the elastic analogue methods.

Dump trucks are the main mean for hauling earth material within and outside of the construction and open-pit mining jobsites. The real-time monitoring of the material transportation trips is beneficial for proactive equipment management, volume estimation, and productivity measurement. The traditional manual observation is tedious, non-real-time, and expensive; therefore remote sensing technologies, namely GPS and RFID, have been employed for this reason. Ordinary construction videos are another costeffective alternative to monitor dirt loading and hauling operations in real-time. A vision-based system has been developed to recognize and count hauling trips. This system has three modules including object detection, tracking, and action recognition. This system processes videos taken from access roads in which it recognizes dump trucks and then tracks them throughout the viewfinder. The action recognition module is designed to reject false alarms and also terminate tracking. This way, the system is able to count the number of hauling trips and also record the time between each trip. Several state of the art computer vision algorithms were employed to develop this system. Some of these algorithms were modified using spatiotemporal information to minimize the inherent errors of the vision-based methods. The experimental results showed considerable performance of the system for practical application in the construction and mining sectors.

The FMC Westvaco Trona Mine is located near Green River, Wyoming and has an annual production of 4.5M tons. Trona is an evaporite mineral that is processed into several products, mostly soda ash. The underground mine has two active development panels and one longwall (LW) panel. The mining horizon is about 500m below surface and the surrounding strata liberates methane. Three surface-based, blowing fans provide ventilation air as a positive pressure system. The mine operates a 225m long LW face, built by Joy Mining Machinery. Headgate and Tailgate developments are driven with four entries. The recovery room, at the end of each panel, is 8m wide with three access chutes. Additional recovery room support comes for concrete blocks used with a center to center spacing of 1.5m. As the LW enters this pre-driven recovery room there are notable responses and shifting ground stresses. This study was undertaken to measure the ground response using seven vibrating wire displacement transducers. These devices were used to monitor the convergence as the LW approached the recovery room. The methane concentration in the air ventilating the recovery room was also monitored. The correlation between convergence and gas liberation was then studied. The results show that the convergence varies from 0.1m to 0.25m along the length of the recovery room. Ventilating the recovery room becomes critical as methane is liberated from oil shale as the more plastic floor material is disrupted. Appropriate methods are employed to ventilate the recovery room.

O objetivo deste artigo é analisar a influência das fases presentes nas misturas iniciais e finais na eficiência de desfosforação do ferro-gusa. Foram realizados 8 experimentos no forno de resistência, na temperatura de 1400°C, e além disso foram feitas simulações no software FactSage 6.4. Como resultado, obteu-se que as misturas DP3 e DP4 são as mais eficientes, possuindo tanto na mistura inicial quanto na final saturação em CaO, ou seja, atividade do CaO igual a 1; atividade de FeO maior possível e maior quantidade de fase líquida possível. As misturas com fases sólidas DP5 a DP8 apresentaram menor eficiência de desfosforação, pode-se concluir então que as fases sólidas diminuem a eficiência de desfosforação em processos reais, apesar de reterem mais fósforo no equilíbrio.

This short paper outlines the authorÆs views regarding the progress we have made as an industry in managing mining assets over the past 500 years. It represents a personal view û but one founded in fact-based observations of mining companies and of the mining industry in general. There is no doubt that AgricolaÆs views as expressed in De Re Metallica (1556) were visionary. There is also little doubt regarding another issue û that whilst a great deal has been learnt about the management of mines since AgricolaÆs time, observations suggest that best practice management is the exception rather than the rule across our industry. Although insights regarding the successful management of mines have become apparent, we still witness unnecessary errors in our industry that lead to the loss of shareholdersÆ funds. By highlighting some aspects of current best practice, particularly in the arena of operations management, it is hoped that this short paper contributes a small step along the next 500-year-long learning curve. The paper concludes with a brief description of the progress and impact of continuous improvement initiatives at Kalgoorlie Consolidated Gold Mines (KCGM). Located in the Kalgoorlie Goldfields, KCGM is currently AustraliaÆs largest gold mine producing over 800 000 ounces of gold per annum. Improvement initiatives at KCGM look set to deliver some $100 million in value over life-of-mine.

10.5-1. Introduction. In the not-too-distant past, maintenance and the facilities for maintenance were considered a necessary evil to be given only secondary consideration in the development and planning of a surface mine operation. With the increasing sophistication of mining equipment and machinery, this concept has been replaced; and today's mine managers recognize that planning for adequate maintenance facilities is as important to a successful operation as a sound mining plan. This chapter will present the basic maintenance facilities and the fundamental considerations necessary to meet the varied requirements of surface mining. 10.5-2. Determination of Shop Facilities. The size, shape, and extent of maintenance facilities are contingent on the general mining plan, the location relative to outside facilities, and to the available capital. The type of construction employed is dependent on climatic conditions and preference. HAULAGE SYSTEMS. The type of haulage equipment used will dictate the kind of shops needed. Truck haulage requires entirely different facilities than rail haulage. Some mines will employ both systems, and can include hoists, skips, or conveyor belts in combination with locomotives or trucks. The requirements of each type will be discussed. MAINTENANCE ORGANIZATION. The pre-planning decision as to centralized maintenance vs. area maintenance, or a combination of both, will greatly affect the maintenance facilities required. Cast-in-place concrete piles socketed in rock are a commonly used foundation solution in the province of Ontario. Although cast-in-place concrete piles are common, limited pile load testing has been undertaken on these foundations to confirm shaft friction (side shear) and end bearing parameters. Particularly, the large diameter piles bearing on rock makes conventional pile loads tests impractical and costly due to large capacities that need to be mobilized during testing. Performance of piles loads test come with the advantage of confirming the assumed geotechnical design parameters and permitting the use the larger strength reduction factor as per LRFD design. This paper presents the preparation, execution, and result interpretation of a pile load test carried out on two Cast-in-place concrete piles with diameters of 1.5m and 1.8m for Garden City Skyway Project in the City of St Catherines Ontario, Canada. The 1.5m and 1.8m diameter test piles were socketed 4m and 6m into shale bedrock. Osterberg cells were used in both load tests to provide end bearing and shaft friction parameters for the shale bedrock as well as overlying layers of till and soft clay. The results of the load test provided valuable insight into the load settlement performance exhibited by these piles. The results are also compared with the analytical estimates of the pile capacities presented in geotechnical report as well as the results of a number of other analytical socket design approaches.

For the last decade, we have read about the great technical innovation that is coming to the mining industry that will increase safety and productivity. There is consensus that it will be a technical innovation that will produce a step change in mining costs and outputs (as opposed to bigger machines or less people); however, this innovation (while freely available) has not taken hold in the industry. While there are a few mines that have embraced technology, the majority of underground mines simply do not have the expertise or technical capability to implement innovation and automation.With unexploited mineral deposits becoming deeper and more remote, and thus more hazardous to mine, telepresence offers the ability to remotely execute production tasks while separating personnel from hazards. As the technologies required to deliver telepresence mature, the potential for there to be no personnel underground during production activities is becoming a reality (the ‘dark factory’). So significant is the capacity of telepresence to mitigate risk, it is proposed that it be included as a separate entry in the hierarchy of hazard mitigation controls.Technical innovation such as the optimised short-term interval control of the production process and the automation of underground mobile fleets offer significant increases in production along with lower operating costs. This paper explores the most critical components for the successful implementation of technology in underground mining; redundant, robust and high-bandwidth communications networks to carry data from distributed networks of smart sensors and to convey teleoperation commands; and high-definition video to provide operators with detailed, real-time data. The days of analogue ‘leaky feeder’ as a base case for communications are over. The human resources required to support the expected wave of innovation are significant and will be difficult to maintain in remote areas as the same skills and expertise are in demand in other industries.The paper highlights barriers to innovation in the mining industry, and a lack of technical and scientific expertise within the industry to be able to identify, implement and manage technologies that can increase safety and productivity. As well, an over-reliance on basic net present value (NPV) financial analysis that is used in the industry punishes investment in technology (capital expenditure; CAPEX) and accepts higher operating expenditure (OPEX) due to the discounting of future savings in operating costs.CITATION:Cronin, J, 2017. O refino primário através dos convertedores BOF representa uma etapa fundamental na fabricação do aço. Em meio a um mercado desafiador e competitivo, estabilidade operacional e inovações são necessárias para alcançar qualidade e preços razoáveis. Com o intuito de estudar o sopro combinado através de um modelo físico, similar com convertedor da thyssenkruppCSA 330t, foi utilizada uma análise visual associada a métodos colorimétricos para mensurar a penetração do jato e a melhor configuração de ventaneiras. Com base nesses métodos, encontrou-se a distância banho-lança que reduz o tempo de mistura com menor probabilidade de slopping. A partir dos resultados obtidos no modelo a frio, os parâmetros foram recalculados para a prática industrial.
