The interfaces between the Broken Hill ore lenses and the enclosing wallrocks are, on a broad scale, parallel to metamorphic layering in the wallrock gneisses and quartzites. In detail, however, the concordant contacts are interrupted by piercement structures, formed by plastic injection of ore into the wallrocks during metamorphism.These discordant bodies vary from minor projections measuring less than I m long, to major ore shoots ("droppers") as much as 60 m long. The intrusive bodies consist of fragmented ore and wallrock in amatrix of recrystallised sulphides. Wallrock fragments have been altered to manganese-rich and calcium-rich mineral assemblages. The injected ore is enriched in sulphides compared with the parent ore, and there has been enrichment in a number of minor elements.Piercement structures formed during the waning phase of high grade metamorphism, when incompetent ore was injected plastically under pressure into the wallrocks, particularly at fold crests. Adjacent to the "droppers", retrograde schists developed as a result of shearing along the ore-wallrock interface.

Power is furnished to the Climax Molybdenum Co. by the Public Service Co. of Colorado over two 100,000-volt lines to a bank of three 3333-kva. transformers 100/13.8 kv. These transformers are so designed that with the addition of forced cooling their capacity may be increased 331/3 Per cent at 12,000-ft. altitude. Under present conditions, these transformers are operated at 140 per cent of their rating with forced air cooling. On the secondary side of this bank there is a 15-kv., 1200-amp. Westinghouse oil circuit breaker provided with automatic reclosing relays allowing three successive short circuits before lockout. From this breaker 13.8-kv. power is transmitted to a central switching station (Fig. I) where all circuits radiate to the different operations of the property. Each circuit is protected by a 23-kv., 600-amp. oil circuit breaker with by-pass and isolating disconnecting switches.

No answer required. From the drilling equipment suppliers, but the specifications must be tailored to be project-specific. Yes, the sonic technique is very interesting as we said, and it is not so much as an issue of the magnitude of power, it's about the efficient use of the power. The efficiency of the machine is not necessarily related to size so it is best to talk to the two contractors that supply the service about that. I think it can be scaled down but it is quite a big head, so therefore there are practical limitations on the size of the door it can walk through and also the size of the casings and rods that it can use. You might defeat the economic advantages if you were to use too short casing lengths. Boart Longyear have a low head room machine that can work within an 8 foot verical clearance.

The details connected with the mining and subsequent handling of Creighton ore were fully covered in a paper presented to the Institute in 1920. The following brief notes describe certain phases of the present practice and show wherein it differs from the practice at that time. These may be summarized under the following headings. (a) Recovery of pillars. (b) Drawing the ore. (c) Change from sub-level tramming to branch-raise system. (d) Chute construction. The present stoping practice is the same as formerly, i.e., fiat-backed shrinkage stopes of 60-foot width, between rib pillars of 15-foot width, extending from the footwall to the hanging-wall. Formerly, when these stopes were completed to the stopes above, they were drawn empty of broken ore, and the 15-foot rib pillars were caved into the stopes and drawn off through the same chutes as were used to draw the ore from the stopes.

But the same engineer, placed in an organized group where modern prospecting methods are employed, is immediately put on his mettle and his chances of winning are greatly increased. Marsman Investments, Ltd., with headquarters in Manila, has at the present time, Sept. 4, 1937, six prospecting parties in the Netherland East Indies. This paper presents an iterative net present value (NPV) maximisation method to determine the optimum surface to underground transition depth for an orebody to be mined by multiple open pits and an underground mine. The determination of transition depth from open pit to underground mining is based on global production scheduling optimisation of open pit and underground mines using mixed integer linear programming. The method is applied to a case study coming from a gold mining complex with six open pits and a large underground mine using longhole open stoping. The results indicate potential improvements of the NPV of global operations when compared to the traditional techniques based on independently optimised open pit first, followed by underground mining.CITATION:Dagdelen, K and Traore, I, 2014. Alkalis in the blast furnace are removed mainly by the slag, Alkali removal by the slag was studied as a rate process of alkali vapor- ization from the slag flowing through the dropping zone in the blast furnace. The vapor-, ization rate of I:20 from CaO-Si02-A1203 IZ20 slag was- measured under various experimental conditions. An empirical formula for the vaporization rate was obtained as a function of slag basicity, temperature and surface area per unit mass of slag. A simulation model of IC20 vaporization in the dropping zone was evaluated using the rate equation when the true velocity and surface area of the slag was de- termined from a flow dynamic model of counter- current gas-liquid flow through packed beds. The influence of the dynamic conditions of flow, as well as the slag basicity and temperature, on alkali removal by the slag was estimated.

Despite the ubiquity of applications for germanium, there is a lack of practically useful solubility data in acidic solutions. Previous studies were done at ambient temperature and only for commonly used acids (H2SO4, HCl). Hence, an investigation of the solubility of GeO2 in different acids was undertaken. Several inorganic and organic acids were studied in the concentration range of 1–11 mol/L and at 23, 40, and 60 °C. In the case of H2SO4 and HCl previous data was confirmed. Lower acidity resulted in a higher solubility for Ge at all tested temperatures. Tests done at 40 and 60 °C and low to moderate acidity levels, gave slightly increased solubility values at higher temperatures compared to 23 °C. This wasn’t the case at higher acidity levels, i.e., the solubility curves at different temperatures converge at high acidity. Lastly, a relationship of water activity and GeO2 solubility in different acid media was established.

"A drilled pier foundation was originally designed to support the proposed G. Wayne Clough Undergraduate Learning Commons on the campus of Georgia Tech in Atlanta, GA. Reflective of the site geology, the original drilled pier foundation was divided into a Northern and Southern portion with an allowable end bearing capacity of 60 ksf and 100 ksf, respectively. After initial pricing on the original design, several value engineering options were submitted that featured changes to the original design capacity and construction method. The project team selected the value engineering option that involved conducting an Osterberg Load Cell test to assess end bearing of the site bedrock and skin friction. Results of the Osterberg Load Cell test justified increasing the allowable end bearing capacity of the site bedrock to 100 ksf in the Northern portion and 125 ksf in the Southern portion. Considering the final foundation design and Osterberg Load Cell test program, a net savings of approximately $259,000, or approximately 34%, was obtained over the original design.Project BackgroundThe G. Wayne Clough Undergraduate Learning Commons (CULC) is a 5-story academic building on the Georgia Tech campus in Atlanta, Georgia. The CULC was completed in 2011 and consists of a concrete frame structure supported on a drilled pier foundation.After pricing of the original drilled pier foundation design, several value engineering (VE) analyses were performed by the foundation contractor in an effort to demonstrate the potential for a reduced foundation cost. The VE analyses focused on variations in design assumptions, as well as construction techniques. This paper presents a case study that demonstrates how the value engineering process can be used to reduce foundation costs.Site Investigation and Subsurface ConditionsThe CULC building site is located within the Southern Piedmont Physiographic Province, an area underlain by metamorphic and igneous rocks. McConnell and Abrams (1984) indicate that the site is located at the boundary between two distinct geologic formations. The Northern portion of the site is underlain by the Wahoo Creek Formation while the Southern portion of the site is underlain by the Stonewall Formation. The United States is the world's leading producer of phosphate rock. In 1975 according to the US Bureau of Mines' statistics, 44.3 million tonnes (48.8 million st) of phosphate rock were produced in the United States, l which is 40.6% of the world's production.2 The major phosphate producing areas of the United States are located in [Fig. 1] and the production for 1975 is listed as follows: [ ] All of these areas produce phosphate from deposits which are of marine sedimentary origin. Occurrences of phosphate exist throughout the United States in numerous locations that are of both igneous and sedimentary origins. However, these other phosphate occurrences vary greatly in extent and economic significance. Georgia, South Carolina, California, Texas, Arkansas, Kansas, Iowa, Alabama, Kentucky, and Virginia are but a few of the states in which phosphate is thought or known to exist. The near future expansion will probably continue to be in, or near, existing producing areas, (i.e., Florida and North Carolina).

SINCE my earliest recollection, the coal business has been in a state of unrest. It has always been a matter of bewilderment to the serious thinking, the instability of this most important industry; second only to agriculture in its effect on the great development of this country, and even more important in certain aspects, because without fuel railroads could not run, agriculture could not get its products to market, nor would the great manufacturing enterprises have been possible. I will not attempt to discuss the present serious -labor dispute or similar disagreements of the past; in the settlement of which more or less successful attempts have been made to equalize, temporarily at least, natural conditions through "joint agreement" as to prices paid labor; but will confine my views to the general underlying conditions of which the disputes are symptoms, and try to show how these must be remedied before there can be any hope of stabilizing conditions.

Back-analysis of two mining-induced tremors in 2011 was used to determine a modelling criterion for the entire Klerksdorp Goldfield (i.e., Vaal Reefs region). At that time, most mining operations in the region were owned by AngloGold Ashanti (AGA) and shared many geotechnical similarities. By 2018 AGA had sold off all its Klerksdorp operations to different mining companies, which continued applying the 2011 modelling criterion. As mining activities became more remote, scattered, and isolated, the extraction of isolated blocks of ground and remnants became increasingly necessary. However, the inherited criterion allowed only minimal or no mining activities at these areas. Keeping in mind that safety is the overriding consideration, an innovative numerical modelling approach, which includes the application of peak particle velocity designs, was developed to provide practitioners in the Klerksdorp Goldfield with a suitable criterion to justifiably and safely mine isolated blocks of ground and remnants. This would not always be possible if a conformist approach was used.

This paper gives an estimation of the future requirements of the western world in relation to energy re-sources. It then goes on to outline the role that atomic power -with its basic raw material, uranium -will play in supplying these energy requirements. Canada's position in this picture is covered, and some interesting forecasts are made. Introduction I T is possible that the following remarks will appear to have more to do with power than uranium. However, to fully comprehend what is in store for the Canadian uranium mining industry, we must be able to estimate the potential requirement, and, to do this satisfactorily, a thorough understanding of the circumstances that will give rise to that demand is necessary. The growing need for electrical energy will play by far the major role, as large tonnages of uranium will be required for its generation. The nuclear weapon has, up to the present, comprised the major market for uranium.

Every year the United States consumes millions of dollars worth of abrasive materials as blasting media. Entrained in either a gas or liquid stream or propelled by paddles or wheels, they are directed onto the surface of another material to modify that surface. The modifications to impacted surfaces include cleaning, cutting, deburring, etching, finishing, and peening. Blasting media can be either organic or mineral abrasive materials. Information and data presented are for only a portion of the mineral abrasives, they are; fused aluminum oxide, coal slag, copper slag, garnet, metallic shot and grit, nickel slag, olivine, silica sand, silicon carbide, and staurolite.

This paper proposes a simple two-parameter model for the typical inverse relationship between recovery and flotation concentrate grade. The model is based on the mineralogical limitations imposed by the material properties. One parameter (R*) describes the proportion of metal content which is floatable, and the other (b) is the rate at which the fastest floating particles are being contaminated by the other less valuable particles present in the mineral system. One significant feature of the recovery-grade curve is that initial recovery (i. e. R ? 0) is at the purest attainable mineral grade, (but as recovery rises the cumulative grade of the concentrate tends to the feed grade. The ideal recovery-grade curve for a particular mineralogical system can be obtained by release analysis: the release analysis curve determines the maximum or limiting separation efficiency. The model proposed in this work is similar to the linear recovery - cut-off grade model of Dell (1), but has the advantage of describing the whole curve.

DURING the heat-treatment of silver specimens for tensile tests it was observed that the bars blistered and became brittle when heated in a hydrogen atmosphere. The gradual reduction of the sinter feed size has been a complicating factor in the maintenance of sintering productivity. In addition, pellet feeds have been used for chemical correction. Because of this, it is necessary an effective cold agglomeration step in sintering to keep the ironmaking competitiveness. Thus, in the present paper, four different technological routes for cold agglomeration with sinter feeds (drum mixer, intensive mixer + drum, double drum and HPS - Hybrid Pelletized Sinter) were evaluated in pilot scale and their impacts on the indicators of the sintering and the sinter quality was obtained. It was found that the best results on granulation index and, consequently, productivity were obtained in the route using HPS. However, the sinter from this process was the most fragile among the analyzed ones. The performance of the double drum process was superior to the intensive mixer from the point of view of productivity and sinter quality.

In the fall of 1961, Cominco dis-carded its long-established system of feeding the lead blast furnaces by narrow-gauge tram and V-cars, and installed an elevated monorail bucket system. This system automatically loads buckets of sinter, along with the correct proportion of coke, and delivers them to any of several designated furnaces. Direct labour usage has been reduced by nine men per day; improved coke proportioning has been achieved; and a major safety hazard has been eliminated. Introduction I N THE fall months of l 961. the system of feeding the lead blast furnaces at the Trail, B.C., smelter of The Consolidated Mining and Smelting Company of Canada Limited was altered from the tradition-al narrow-gauge railway and V-car method to one employing mono-rail carriers. This paper relates some of the experiences, good and bad, of blasting adjacent to residences of the primary author during his 15+ years of field blasting in the Northern Great Plains region. During this highly-rewarding blasting career, the author has become aware of two major issues in residential blasting: 1) What we call “Risk/Reward Ratio.”Some questions that must be asked by the blaster prior to taking on any blasting job include: - Can we eliminate or minimize the risk? - Is the reward worth the risk? - Do I have a measure of “nervous confidence” about the shot? 2) Public Relations. Two key elements to public relations are: - Notification - Education All the education in the world to the adjacent populous of what’s happening, of blasting in general, or of what to expect from the blasting does little good without notification. Good public relations is a key to controlling the cost of liability in a litigious society.

A WIDE variety of metalliferous deposits in Peru shows a close and consistent relationship to intrusive and extrusive igneous rdcks. This relationship furnishes a clue to the comp(osition of ore-bearing fluids and to the timing in separation of these fluids from differentiation magma Conclusions presented here are based on ten years' study of a large number of metalliferous deposits in Peru.
