This chapter summarizes data on crude nonfuel mineral production for the United States, its island possessions, and the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico. Included also are the tables that show the principal nonfuel mineral commodities exported from and imported into the United States and that compare world and U.S. mineral production. The detailed data from which these tables were derived are contained in the individual commodity chapters of volume I and in the State chapters of volume II of this edition of the Minerals Yearbook. Although crude mineral production may be measured at any of several stages of extraction and processing, the stage of measurement used in this chapter is what is ordinarily termed "mine output." It usually refers to minerals or ores in the form in which they are first extracted from the ground, but customarily includes the output from auxiliary processing at or near the mines.

To help solve problems associated with the optimization of complex coal preparation systems, a mathematical model has been assembled which can simplify calculations pertaining to the core of the plant, i.e. the coal cleaning section. It uses algebraic expressions, derived by fitting hyperbolic equations to Mayer curves, to calculate optimum settings for a specified array of coal cleaning units and feeds. This is done without search procedures, and with usually only minor iteration of a simple calculation to specify optima within 0.02% of specified product ash contents. The key to the calculation is a relationship derived via the analytical geometry of conic sections facilitating easy application of the incremental ash theory of separations. The model has been assembled in a generalised form to cater for N processes in parallel, each giving M separations to produce P final products. Examples are given involving assessment of some complex circuit options.

I DESIRE to call the attention of the Institute to two deep vertical shafts, which are now being sunk in Schuylkill County, Pennsyl¬vania, about 1 1/2 miles north of Pottsville. These shafts are of interest to the mining engineer, not only on account of the novelty of the method of sinking adopted, which promises to produce a revolution in that branch of mining engineering, but also as examples of the manner in which such work should be undertaken. GEOLOGICAL SKETCH OF THE TERRITORY TO BE WORKED BY THE SHAFTS AND REASON FOR SINKING THEM. The Mammoth or E Vein of the anthracite coal-measures in that part of the Schuylkill region near and north of the town of Pottsville lies at a great depth below the surface, and has, in consequence, never been worked in that locality.

Passage of the Public Utilities Regulatory Policy Act ("PURPA") in I 978 created an entirely new industry that is referred to today as the Independent Power Producers ("IPP"). Requirements of project owners, environmental compliance, project design, the financial community and most of all, the need to be a low-cost producer presented a unique situation for the sourcing and the utilization of fuels. Depending on the specific type of project being developed, (e.g. coal-fired, wood/biomass, natural gas, petroleum coke or a blend of several fuel types) and the type of boiler design, it is important to acquire fuels that will optimize both the project's operating efficiency and flexibility. This paper will focus on the acquisition of fuel for coal-fired projects, but will describe the necessary steps in the sourcing, contracting for, and the utilization of fuels and transportation resources in the IPP industry today.

The operation of the cyanide-sensitive Mintek/TB1 kegold electrode was studied in the laboratory, with regard to equilibration time and drift, the effects of pH, stirring, salinity, dissolved oxygen, zinc and copper(I) ions. Methods for valid calibration in the range 20-600 mg(NaCN)/L and pH values in the range 9 - 12 in the absence of copper were also studied. Increasing the salinity beyond a threshold of 40 g(NaCI)/L improves calibration and measurement. The sensitivity is 91 mV per decade change in the concentration of ionic cyanide, and output is reproducible to within 10 mV with attention to the factors listed above. However, salinity of 40 g(NaCI)/L also sensitises the electrode to interference by copper(1) ions. This copper sensitivity seems capable of saturation, suggesting a research strategy for possible remedies.

OVERWHELMING proof of the importance of oil in a modern national economy is afforded by the present European War. Treat¬ies and national boundaries have been cynically violated to secure greater supplies of the precious fuel. Petroleum substitutes have been desperately, and far from successfully, sought. The whole German military theory of the drang nach Osten, the drive to the East, is directed at cutting the British supply of oil and securing a supply for Germany. This is a war of machines, and the machines of war feed hungrily on oil. In view of this fact, it is surely comforting to know that we are living today in a nation which has surpassed all the rest of the world not merely in unearthing the raw supplies of petroleum which lie beneath its surface but also in every phase of the industry in mining, refining, processing, production, and distribution.

Gekko Systems Pty Ltd have developed the Python Underground Processing Plant for the concentration of gold and sulfide ores. The Python plant has an established flow sheet including fine crushing, screening, gravity separation and flotation which aims to concentrate the valuable minerals (gold/sulfides). The aim of the plant is to achieve high valuable recovery into a mass yield of 10 - 30 per cent to reduce the amount of material that is needed to be taken to downstream processing. This paper examines the test work protocol for testing an ore to assess its suitability for the Python flow sheet. This paper will discuss the test methods employed to determine crushing requirements, continuous gravity recovery and flotation performance and how the results relate to Python design for the comminution, gravity and flotation circuits. Results from past test work will be discussed.

"AEROPHINE® 3418A Promoter is a well-known and widely used collector and is an industry standard for its excellent selectivity and efficacy in the processing of complex polymetallic sulfide ores, particularly those containing silver. Until now, however, it has not found widespread use in primary nickel flotation.In an effort to increase nickel recovery without compromising selectivity over iron sulfides, Western Areas Forrestania Nickel operation trialled the use of AEROPHINE® 3418A as a secondary collector at low dosage. A series of ON/OFF trials were conducted, with the finding that a very low dose of AEROPHINE® 3418A increased nickel recovery by 0.6 per cent compared to using xanthate alone.This paper provides a brief operational history and overview of the Forrestania operations, a description of the trial and an analysis of the results.Citation:Emery, S, Flynn, M, Tan, K and Munro, C, 2016. Rare earth elements (REEs) are indispensable components in the manufacturing of high-tech devices, renewable energy technologies, and defence applications. As global demand for these elements continues to rise, there is a pressing need to optimize extraction processes for both efficiency and environmental sustainability. This study explores approaches to rare earth extraction using Ionquest® 801 and integrates a predictive modelling to enhance process understanding and optimization. We conducted a screening test varying pH process to evaluate the best extraction efficiency. Starting pregnant leach solution (PLS), solution was prepared in the lab with the following rare earth elements: La, Ce, Gd, Dy, and Υ, at 0.02 M for each element. The data obtained were used to develop empirical and mechanistic models to predict rare earth extraction yields and flowsheet. Further tests were performed by mixing specific concentrations of different extractant and/or phase modifier. Our experimental results demonstrated the effectiveness of the proposedextraction methods, highlighting improvements in both yield and selectivity. The developedmodels successfully captured the complex relationships between process parameters and extraction efficiency, providing valuable insights for process optimization.

Currently, the main carbonaceous material for Mn-alloys production is solid carbon, i.e. coke, charcoal and petroleum coke, which is produced with large CO2 emissions. Due to the simple purification, high carbon activity and low CO2 emissions, natural gas has some advantages compared with conventional reducing agents. The aim of the present project is to develop a new technology for production of Mn-alloys using natural gas as a source of carbon. Experimental results indicated that injection of CH4 gas directly into melted slag reduced slightly the MnO and SiO2. However, the metal yield was much less than the theoretical value due to a relative low residence time of CH4 in the slag. The alternative approach was to use carbon black as reductant, produced by CH4 decomposition. The preliminary experimental results showed a high reduction rate using carbon black.

To construct the accessing railroad line to the northern portal of Seikan Undersea Tunnel, nine tunnels amounting 7.4km in their total length were excavated through soft mudstones of young- er tertiary era with use of smaller-sized mechanic al excavators. Rocks were classified in four classes to which the tunnel support was designed respectively. Of several combinations of driving equipments stu- died comparatively, the method using the mechani- cal excavators was estimated to be the best choi- ce. The efficiency of the excavator was traced in every construction section and the data colle- cted was reviewed numerically. The result showed that the efficiency of the excavator dropped wh- ere the rocks were as hard as over 200kg/crif for compressive strength. And a few technigues in tunnelling i.e. contr- olling dusts in shotcreting, lattice arch, evaluati- ng measured deformations were tested and review- ed too.

Introduction The Hollinger cyanidation mill commenced operating in June, 1912, and 49,779,978 tons of solids had been discarded by the end of 1950. The present tailing disposal plant has been in operation since 1924 and holds 39,762,250 tons. The tailing disposal plant is on the property of Kayorum Gold Mines, Limited, about a mile and a quarter south of the mill. The area available for tailing covers 640 acres and is roughly l ¼ miles long by ¾ mile wide. Tailing was first deposited on the McKay veteran claims, l mile long by 1/2 mile wide, which were later included in the Kayorum property. This site sloped from northeast to southwest, the slope amounting to 106 feet between the northeast corner and the low land to the southwest. The low land was wet and a considerable area was covered with muskeg up to 17 feet deep. It was drained by a brook running across the property in a southwesterly direction. Later, when more ground was needed, the low-lying mining claims adjacent to the south and west boundaries were acquired to allow for the extension of the plant. This entailed some extra difficulties and expense that would not have been encountered had the whole of the present site been acquired with the original purchase. At the present time, the top of the tailing deposit stands at two elevations, but eventually the tailing deposited on the extension to the original plant will be raised to the same height as the older deposit. Previous to 1924, all of the tailing was deposited on Low land and in lakes near the mil1. Between 1924 and 1926 an increasing tonnage was sent to the McKay claims until, in 1926, all of it was being sent there. In 1936, the area of the deposit was extended and shortly afterwards all of the tailing was deposited on the new site.

It is to this field that I have directed a large part of my energies. Raw Materials Basic to the Economic Process There are certain premises, frequently overlooked, which bear emphasis. As economics concerns the production, distribution, and consumption of goods, so our whole society is based on raw materials. Without the basic extractive industries of agriculture and mining, there would be no economic problems with which to deal. This principle has been expressed as: "All productivity is based on three factors: (1) natural resources, whose form, place, and condition are changed by the expenditure of (2) human energy (both muscular and mental), with the aid of (3) tools."*

THE advent of a sensitive X-ray method of analysis recently has allowed the determination of retained austenite in amounts as low as 0.3 pct.' As a result this phase has been found in quenched low carbon steels where its presence has not been generally suspected. In the course of a study of the tempering process,' retained austenite determinations were made by the X-ray method on a series of high purity Fe-C alloys and plain carbon steels. The chemical analyses of these materials and details of the hardening procedure are given in Table I. Results were obtained after quenching to 72°F (22°C) and — 321 °F (—196°C). GEO. M. MOWBRAY’S REFRIGERATOR CAR FOR THE SAFE CONVEYANCE OF EXPLOSIVES. It is a fact well known to all miners who have used nitro-glycerin, or any of its adulterations, commonly known as dynamite, rendrock, Hercules’ powder, dualin, vigorite, etc., that when congealed, these compounds cannot be exploded, and in this congealed state — say at temperatures below 40° F. — they can be handled with no more danger than a box of soap or a can of lard. If, then, the atmosphere by which this class of explosives is surrounded, during transportation, be maintained below 40° F., explosion is practically annihilated. Therefore, I constructed a refrigerator car, with cells for every box of the explosive; and two years of railroad transportation confirms our ten years’ experience in teaming in wagons, that this class of explosives can be transported in perfect safety, as above described.

In 1892 I tested an ore, which was peculiarly difficult to treat, on several concentrators then in general use, including t,he Frue-vanner, the Luhrig table and the Cornish buddle. Owing to the character of the ore it had to be crushed- to a very fine state of division, and the results obtained were far from satisfactory; a large proportion of the values was lost in the slimes, which indicated the necessity of a very careful sizing before dressing. Even after reworking some of the slime-tailings, the results, in my opinion, were not as good aa those which might be obtained on a table designed more especially for the handling of slime. Factory beet molasses media were used as cheap sources of sucrose for microbial leaching of Greek nickeliferrous laterites using strains of Penicillium and Aspergillus sp. Nickel recoveries of up to 62% and cobalt recoveries of up to 50% were obtained by leaching in a two-phase system in which bioacids were produced by fungal metabolism in molasses ferrocyanide pretreated media. The addition of potassium ferrocyanide to the molasses substrates prior to leaching was found to have a beneficial effect by increasing the level of citric acid bioproduction, thus improving the leaching efficiency of the fermentation liquid. The metals known to interfere with citric acid production (i.e., Fe, Cu, Ca and Mn) were those most efficiently precipitated. Considering the much lower commercial price of molasses in the industrial market compared to sucrose and glucose carbohydrate media, molasses could prove to be a promising alternative, despite the cost of the required pretreatment.
