A recirculação interna de gases em bombas de vácuo é uma falha frequente em estações de desgaseificação de aço e está associada ao aumento dos tempos de processo, a um maior consumo energético e a não obtenção da pressão de trabalho adequada. O tratamento de tais desvios pode ser complicado pela falta de informação disponível sobre os modos de falha dos equipamentos. Este artigo descreve um método experimental para encontrar valores de referência para testes que podem ser realizados na planta para a detecção de não conformidades em bombas de vácuo constituídas de ejetores a vapor e condensadores; tal método é composto por testes lógicos, sequenciais e não intrusivos. São fornecidas tabelas com os valores esperados das grandezas testadas, assim como diversas causas de redução de desempenho e de perda de função dos componentes.

AN observation by Squires, Weiner, and phillipsl has stimulated interest in a mechanism of deformation at high temperature (above -0.5 of the absolute melting point) that is not usually thought to be involved in the creep of metals. They found precipitate-free or "denuded" zones along grain boundaries normal to the stress axis in tensile specimens of a hydrided Mg-1/2 wt pct Zr alloy after slow straining at 450° and 500°C. Their suggestion that the zones were a result of directional diffusion of magnesium atoms was supported with calculations from Harris and Jones2 which also tended to identify the process as Nabarro-Herring (N-H) creep3,4—a process that is characterized by Newtonian viscosity, with stress (o) directly proportional to strain rate (C), and one that proceeds by lattice diffusion. Material transport by diffusion along grain boundaries is an alternative basis for Newtonian viscosity, as demonstrated by Coble,5 and is favored over N-H creep for fine grain size and lower temperature.6 In either case, the strain rate sensitivity of flow stress, defined as m = d log o/d log E (which commonly appears in the empirical a = KEW), is unity. The experiments to be described here gave metallo-graphic indications of diffusional creep which were no less clear than those just cited, but the associated m (as measured by the method of Ref. 7) was much more like that of a Bingham material. For true Bingham behavior, (a — ao) E, where oo is an initial yield stress. Therefore, even if flow after yielding should occur by diffusional transport, m must increase from 0 as < is raised to reach unity only in the limit as One result is that the resistance to tensile necking conferred by Newtonian viscosity is lost, which would become increasingly apparent through the formation of more sharply defined necks as 6 is lowered. That trend appeared in these experiments. Most of the work was done on an extremely finegrained alloy of magnesium with -6 wt pct Zn and ½ wt pct Zr (Mg ZK60); the initial mean-intercept grain diameter, L, was 0.55 µ. Shown in Fig. l(a) is a germanium-shadowed carbon replica of the surface of a specimen that was coated with silicone oil,* heated to 270°C under a helium atmosphere, and then stretched locally -200 pct at an initial E = 3.3 x 10-5 sec-1. "LocationThe Strathcona mill ofFalconbridge Limited is located in Onaping, Ontario, 50 km northwest of Sudbury.GeneralOre from the Falconbridge mines in the Sudbury Basin (Strathcona, Fraser, Onaping, Craig and Thayer Lindsley mines) is processed through the Strathcona mill with 8500 t of nickel ore and 1500 t of copper ore being treated daily. Current capacity is -3 Mt of ore at 1.8% Ni, 1.9% Cu combined grade. Custom feeds are also processed. The valuable minerals in the ore are pentlandite (FeNi)9S8, chalcopyrite (CuFeS2) with some cubanite (CuFe2S3) and very minor nickel sulphides/ arsenides. Cobalt is present mainly in solid solution in pentlandite. There are small but economically important concentrations of precious metals including platinum, palladium gold, and silver. The common non-sulphide gangue minerals are feldspar, quartz, mica, talc, and chlorite while pyrrhotite (Fe7S8) is the major gangue sulphide. The pyrrhotite contains between 0.6% and 1.2% nickel in solid solution and additional nickel as exsolved pentlandite in micron sized blebs. The nickel and copper ores are batch-crushed in a two stage dry crushing plant and then ground in separate circuits. Concentration by flotation and magnetic separation produces a nickel concentrate assaying approximately 16% nickel plus copper and a copper concentrate assaying 30% copper and 0.4% nickel. The nickel concentrate is trucked as a slurry to the Falconbridge smelter while the copper concentrate is trucked as filter cake to the Kidd Division of Falcon bridge"

The Mine is an underground zinc (Zn), lead (Pb) and silver (Ag) operation in central New South Wales (NSW). Broadly speaking the Mine has two domains that require rehabilitation, the mine industrial area (MIA) and the tailings storage facility (TSF). The MIA has been used for the handling and processing of ore and contains elevated sulfate, sulfide and metals (Pb, Zn). The TSF receives the by-products of processing, that is, potentially acid forming (PAF) tailings which also contain elevate sulfate, sulfide and metals. Typically, the rehabilitation of a TSF involves two controls. Firstly, controlling the potential for PAF tailings to form acid rock drainage (ARD) by limiting interaction with oxygen. Secondly, once the tailings are unsaturated, limiting interaction with water (usually as rainfall) to reduce the potential for ARD to be transported to the receiving environment. These two controls are often employed in the form of a cover.In semi-arid environments there are many Australian examples of covers that have been built to limit interactions of mine by-products with oxygen and water. Typically, the covers contain one or more layers and are built from soil and rock which may include run-of-mine rock. The Mine however has limited supplies of stockpiled soil; and run-of-mine rock is not generated in large volumes because it is used as backfill underground. A cover design strategy was developed to cater for these limiting factors. The strategy identified soil, ore and rock accretion (the accretion) below the MIA could be a potential source of borrow material for the cover. The purpose of this paper is to describe the cover design process, the method and results of large (2 m tall) column trials that were used as a cost-effective way to trial three cover options and finally, the paper describes the water balance that was developed from the column trial results and subsequent modelling using SVFlux.CITATION:Rohde, T K and Jamson, N, 2018. "Constructed between 1939 and 1945, the Rondout-West Branch Tunnel (RWBT) portion of the Delaware Aqueduct is 45 miles (72 km) long. The New York City Department of Environmental Protection (NYCDEP) first identified suspected areas of leakage from the RWBT in the 1990s. A $1 billion project is underway to mitigate the leakage through the construction of a bypass tunnel around the area of most severe deterioration, a 2.5-mile (4 km) section located beneath the Hudson River. Two shafts, 800 and 900 feet (244 and 274 m) below the ground surface, are being sunk to support the tunnel construction. The deep shafts will be subjected to high groundwater pressures and have been designed to accommodate multiple tunnel portals. This paper discusses the engineering decisions and analyses leading up to the final design. INTRODUCTION Project Background The New York City Department of Environmental Protection (NYCDEP) provides over 1 billion gallons (3.7 billion liters) of water to over 9 million residents of the City of New York and surrounding communities each day. This water is stored in upstate reservoirs and conveyed to the City via a system of aqueducts and tunnels. Water is delivered to the City almost completely by gravity and consists of three systems: the Croton, the Catskill, and the Delaware. The Delaware System is the largest of the three and supplies between 50% and 70% of the City’s daily water supply. In the 1990s, the NYCDEP discovered leaks in the central 45-mile-long (72 km) portion of the Delaware Aqueduct known as the Rondout-West Branch Tunnel (RWBT). The leaks release between 15 and 35 million gallons per day (MGD) (132.5 million liters per day) and are concentrated in two areas near Wawarsing and Roseton, New York. As part of the Rondout-West Branch Bypass Tunnel and Wawarsing Repairs Project (Bypass Tunnel Project), the leaks in the Wawarsing area will be repaired by grouting from inside the existing RWBT, and the leaks in the Roseton area will be mitigated by constructing a bypass tunnel parallel to and 1,750 feet (533 m) north of the leaking portion of the existing RWBT. Two deep shafts will be excavated on either side of the Hudson River: Shaft 5B in Newburgh and Shaft 6B in the Town of Wappinger."

The Atlantic City district encompasses several districts and has been previously called by different names, e.g., Atlantic gold district, Atlantic City-South Pass mining district, and Sweetwater mining district. The district is located in a terrane of folded and faulted early Precambrian metamorphic rocks which lies near the south end of the Wind River Range in Fremont County, Wyoming, Historically it is a gold district of little production, but today is an iron district of considerable importance. Gold was discovered in placer deposits about 1842 and in quartz-arsenopyrite veins about 1867, after which there occurred a mining boom lasting a few years. Minor, intermittent gold production from placers and lodes has continued to date, but the total production has probably not exceeded a few millions of dollars. Past lode mining was generally shallow ( in the oxidized zone), the deepest about 3 60 feet. The deeper, less oxidized and sulfide ores on the same lodes have not been explored. They appear to hold the only hope for future gold mining. Sedimentary iron-formation, similar to the Lake Superior taconite, occurs in the northern part of the district. Locally, where the ironformation is thickened by folds and faults, sufficient tonnages are present to be minable, as at Iron Mountain, where the U.S. Steel Corporation produces about 1.3 million tons of iron-ore pellets annually. Exploration of the iron deposits began in 1954, and the first ironore pellets were shipped to Provo, Utah in August 1962. Indicated reserves of iron-formation (about 30 per cent Fe) are reported to be about 300 million tons.

Straw char exhibited considerably faster burning speed than coke breeze for its porosity, which significantly degraded sinter quality when it replacing coke breeze as sintering fuel. In this investigation, preforming technology has been employed to densify raw straw. The properties of straw char preformed show that its density was increased, and the structure was also densified, which made the difference of combustibility between the straw char and coke breeze smaller. The proper preforming temperature, residence time and pressure were 200℃, 1min and 120MPa respectively. Sinter pot trials show that the product carbonized from preformed straw made the proper replacement ratio to coke breeze increase from 20% to 40%, and the emission reduction of SOx, NOx in flue gas increase from 11.50%, 14.15% to 37.85%, 23.60% respectively, compared with non-preformed straw char.

"The Sydvaranger magnetite mine closed in 1996 due to low iron ore prices and was reopened in 2009. The flowsheet has remained more or less as in the old plant, based upon two grinding steps followed by magnetic separation. The magnetite is free of harmful elements and should be attractive on the high quality market. This requires a concentrate containing less than 2% SiO2, which previously was achieved by amine flotation. Amine was preferred because it could be used with sea water. The use of amine is now restricted by the Norwegian Climate and Pollution Agency. Therefore, testwork to replace cationic with anionic flotation was done. Activation of quartz with Ca or Mg ions prior to anionic flotation was shown by research from 1960 to 1980 to be effective under laboratory conditions. The old research results have been followed up in order to make a commercial process for Sydvaranger. Calcium activation works excellently with all Sydvaranger ores, including the ones containing amphibole minerals, but Ca activation requires the high and not environmentally friendly pH of 12.4. Magnesium activation at pH 10.5 is a little more challenging, because the maximum concentration of MgOH+ is about 100 times lower than that of CaOH+. Fortunately, the major impurity in the main Bjornevatn orebody is quartz, which responds well to Mg activation. The process does not appear to depend much upon water quality, as the silicates may already be activated during grinding and magnetic separation in recycled water. The new process is environmentally friendly, as only well-known household reagents are used; oleic acid or tall oil, dextrin, sodium hydroxide and magnesium chloride at pH 10.5.IntroductionThe processing plant of Sydvaranger Gruve AS (SVG) is located in the port town of Kirkenes in the northernmost part of Norway, 10 km by rail from the high-grade deposit of Bjornevatn. This plant has been able to beneficiate magnetite ore to up to 99.5% purity, as described by Sandvik and Malvik (2001). Using the magnetic properties of the ore and making the most out of its enviable liberation characteristics, the original plant consisted of ball mills and 600-mm magnetic separators. The plant was shut down due to market conditions in 1996 but reopened in 2009."

"Numerical modelling is becoming universal in rock engineering practice. Most applications focus on the prediction of failure loads of 2D problems, where the numerical models are useful extensions to analytical methods and experience-based design criteria. For 3D problems and problems where the assessment of serviceability indicators – displacements, ground-structure response, etc. – are of importance, the selection of the constitutive models themselves and the implications of the selection of material parameters may have a very heavy impact on the reliability of the model outcome and its predictive capability.This paper overviews basic common aspects of constitutive equations used in practical rock engineering and summarizes some challenges that are frequently observed when reviewing numerical models performed for routine problems in rock engineering. INTRODUCTIONNumerical methodsFrom a philosophical perspective models, either analytical or numerical, are idealizations of a perceived reality. For us engineers, models are just tools we use to guide our judgement and understanding of the problem in hand. When dealing with problems in rock engineering, we resort to a wide range of techniques:1. Closed form solutions like confinement-convergence methods for circular tunnels: these methods satisfy equilibrium and compatibility requirements at the cost of a crude simplification of the material behavior and geometry;2. Limit analysis methods, like bearing capacity formulas: lower bound methods satisfy equilibrium but sacrifice compatibility, and upper bound methods do the opposite. Material behavior must be simple, geometry admits limited freedom;3. Limit equilibrium methods, like method of slices for slope stability: they satisfy restricted forms of equilibrium, do not satisfy compatibility requirements, require simple material behavior but have a much greater flexibility on geometry;4. Numerical methods, where a mesh is employed to discretize the problem geometry: when properly formulated, these methods satisfy equilibrium and compatibility requirements and give reasonable approximations to the behavior of very complex geometries and construction sequences. Very little restrictions remain on geometry and material behavior, but the cost of calibrating the material parameters can be very high."

Without blasting there can be no roads, no hospitals, no factories, not even foundations for homes. Yet in 1960 the only way to design a blast was by trial/error. By comparison, bridges were already designed by calculations before being actually built. This was possible because equations based on the fundamental principles of science existed with which all the stresses in the bridge could be calculated. In 1960 no equations based on the fundamental principles of science existed with which the mechanisms that take place inside the rock mass during a blast could be calculated. Since then the main author made it the objective of his research to seek such equations, and to validate that they gave accurate answers by means of experiments in the field, experiments made in co-operation with mines, quarries and the explosives industry; results have been reported in some 90 publications.These equations now deal with essentially all aspects of a bench blast: the intensity of the shock wave and the fragmentation size distribution throughout the rock mass; the movement of all the fragments into the muck pile; the fly rock and vibrations from the blast; etc.; are presented examples of such equations. They are now assembled into a computer simulator called Blaspa accessible on the Web, with which one can design a blast just as a bridge is designed. An example is presented. The reason to design a blast by simulations rather than solely by trial/error is that if it leads to damage, it is only after the actual blast that the blast design is realized to cause damage. If however the blast design had been simulated before the blast, then the risk of damage is identified before the blast and is prevented by redesigning the blast. Examples of such situations are presented. The need to a void damage is very necessary because the public is becoming opposed to blasting. When a blast does cause damage, and people learn that the blast was designed solely by trial/error even though simulation was available and would have prevented damage, they become even more strongly against blasting; they may succeed in getting a quarry closed. Their objections to unchecked blasting are not unreasonable, especially as simulating a blast with Blaspa on the Web is a very simple procedure.

THE Buchans ore bodies are located in central Newfoundland, three miles north of Red Indian lake. The townsite of Buchans was named after a Royal Navy Captain who, while attempting to make contact with the Beothuck Indians, camped in the area in 1820. Ore was first found at Buchans by a Mic Mac Indian, Matty Mitchell, who discovered one of the three small orebodies in the bed of the Buchans river. The Anglo-Newfoundland Development Company, which holds mineral rights in the area, developed the orebody, but was forced to give up the venture because of difficulties encountered in separating the various sulphides. The American Smelting and Re-fining Company developed a flotation process which was capable of economically separating and concentrating the various sulphides, and, in 1926, they took a long-term lease on the property.

Soil erosion is strongly related to soil hydraulic properties. Understanding how surface coal mining affects these properties is therefore important in developing effective management practices to control erosion during reclamation. To determine the impact of mining activities on soil hydraulic properties, soils from undisturbed areas, areas of roughly graded mine spoil, areas with replaced topsoil before seeding, and revegetated areas at the Rosebud Mine in Eastern Montana were evaluated. Field and laboratory studies were conducted to determine the soil hydraulic properties of the four representative areas, including particle-size distribution, organic matter content and saturated hydraulic conductivity. Using this data, Water Erosion Prediction Project (WEPP) simulations and risk analyses were performed to investigate mining’s effects on changes in soil erosion potential. Significant differences were seen in the hydraulic properties of the soils in the representative areas due to the mining and reclamation practices at the mine. The WEPP simulations show that the potential for soil erosion increases as a result of mining activities disturbing the soil. The simulations also indicate that the erosion potential may return to pre-mining levels over time with effective revegetation practices.

Top-down constructed large-diameter (up to 90 m or 300 ft) shaft design and constructability issues present an interesting suite of challenges and opportunities highlighted in this paper. The study covers 2D and 3D finite element models used to analyze various failure modes, evaluate the shaft liner and internal structures&apos; response to seismic loading, assist in segment design and assess final structural design tradeoffs. Efforts to achieve economic advantage over conventional heavy civil practices have prompted innovative solutions for ring and segment design, ring build assembly and annulus backfill grouting. The additives polyacrylamide, 1-Butyl-3-methylimidazolium chloride, Tetra-butylammonium bromide, Benzalkonium chloride and chitin are evaluated during zinc electrolysis from synthetic acidic sulphate electrolyte containing Mn2+ ions, in absence and in presence of 0.0055 mg dm-3 of Sb3+ ions. Galvanostatic polarization tests for 2 hours at 50 mA cm-2 and 38oC were carried out to determine the cathodic and anodic potentials, and current efficiency of the deposited zinc. Potentiodynamic polarization and cyclic voltammetry tests have also been employed to study the electrochemical behavior of each additive on the zinc deposit on aluminum electrode. Results showed that, in presence of Sb3+, adding 1 to 3 mg of 1-Butyl-3-methylimidazolium chloride increases the cell voltage by ˜0-7 mV. Current efficiency is increased by ˜4.90-6.40%; power consumption is reduced by ˜147-173 kWh t-1 by adding 1-3 mg, respectively. However, in absence of Sb3+, cell voltage is decreased by ˜7-28 mV, current efficiency is increased by ˜0.70-1.50%; power consumption is reduced by ˜41-47 kWh t-1 by adding 1-3 mg. The effect of the other additives on cell voltage, current efficiency, lead content and morphology of zinc deposit has also been examined. Surface morphology and crystallographic orientation of the deposit was studied using scanning electron microscopic (SEM) and X-ray diffraction (XRD), respectively. The content of lead in the deposit has also been measured using inductively coupled plasma spectroscopy (ICP).

This paper provides a determination of the equivalent level of protection of the international standards relative to similar criteria used by the U.S. Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) to approve two-fault intrinsically safe (IS) stand-alone equipment. U.S. mining law requires such a determination for MSHA to use alternatives to existing standards. The primary issue is to demonstrate that the international standards for equipment evaluation will provide at least the same level of protection for miners as the document currently used by MSHA.

ABSTRACT Stope backfilling is a common operation in many underground mines, which requires a barricade at the base of the stope near the drift entrance to retain the backfill in place. In this paper, the distribution of pore-water pressure in barricades made of waste rock is analyzed. An analytical solution is introduced and applied to estimate the pore-water pressure along the base and full height of the barricade. Results show that the analytical solution generally accurately predicts the distribution of pore-water pressure obtained from the numerical calculations, especially in the upstream part of the barricade, where it is most critical.

For an advanced mineral exploration project that has a ?nugget? issue making the assessment of the deposit grade difficult, a bulk sampling program using a sample tower can provide information that is otherwise not obtainable prior to actual production. This information includes the verification of predicted resource grades for the bulk sample tonnage (and, indirectly, of the methods and parameters used for the grade estimate), confirmation of the physical and grade continuity of the mineralization, and geotechnical data for a future mining operation. The information gathered will improve the input of a feasibility study, particularly with respect to expected mining grades, which are the key economic parameter for most mining projects. The bulk sample rejects can be used for pilotscale metallurgical testwork. Bulk sampling is also useful in cases of potentially biased drill-hole assay results and in the reliable determination of ore grade before shipment of ore from production or development operations to an external beneficiation plant. This paper presents a practical bulk sampling and sample preparation protocol, lists design features for the sample tower, examines the sampling errors that will be encountered, provides information on quality control procedures, and looks at the costs and benefits of such a program, based on the experience of undertaking bulk sampling programs during the period of 1985 to 2008.

RÉSUMÉ L’estimation la plus précise possible des coûts de minage est d’extrême importance pour les études de préfaisabilité afin de diminuer les risques financiers des projets miniers. Les méthodologies existantes d’évaluation des coûts de minage ne permettent pas de les évaluer avec des marges d’erreur acceptables tout au long de l’évolution des projets miniers. Elles visent à évaluer les coûts unitaires de minage des études préliminaires de faisabilité, pour les principales méthodes d’exploitation, en prenant pour l’hypothèse que ces coûts dépendent principalement du taux d’extraction journalière. Si cette hypothèse peut être justifiée pour l’évaluation du coût d’opération, elle est fort discutable pour l’évaluation des coûts de minage. Pour démontrer que cette hypothèse est inadéquate nous avons analysé la méthode d’exploitation la plus populaire sur le continent nord-américain c’est à dire celle par chambres vides avec retrait horizontal (Hr – Horizontal retreat), ou « Longhole » et celle avec retrait vertical (VCr - Vertical Crater retreat). Il ressort de cette analyse que les coûts unitaires de minage dépendent principalement des conditions géotechniques du massif rocheux et de la largeur du gisement et non pas du taux d’extraction journalière du minerai.
