As Building Information Modeling (BIM) becomes widely adopted by the construction industry, it holds undeveloped possibilities for supporting Facility Management (FM). Some FM information systems on the market claim to address the needs for FM requirement. However, the question of whether the functionalities provided by the current BIM-based FM software companies are those actually required by the FM Professionals still need to be answered. The data is required by FM professionals in the operation and maintenance phases of facilities and type of maintainability problems that frequently occur, which can be solved early in design phase, have not yet been addressed. The aim of this paper is to clarify the frequently occurring maintainability problems and to investigate the potential areas that can use BIM technology to solve the maintenance problems in early the design phase. A survey was conducted to collect perspectives from the industry practitioners for the maintenance problems and their frequency. The survey results indicated that maintainability considerations should be taken into consideration during the facility design phase. The results also address the perceived areas by practitioners that need maintainability consideration in design phase

It has been shown that naturally hydrophobic carbonaceous materials such as coal and graphite can be selectively coagulated and separated from hydrophilic impurities without using oily agglomerants, flocculants or electrolytes. The coagulation occurs at C-potentials significantly higher than those predicted by the classical DLVO theory, suggesting that it is driven by the hydrophobic interaction. In the present work, the energy barriers for the coagulation of a hydrophobic coal sample have been calculated using the extended DLVO theory which incorporates the hydrophobic interaction energy in addition to the dispersion and the electrostatic energies. For the coagulation of minerals present in the coal, the classical DLVO theory has been used for the energy barrier calculation. The results of these calculations provide an excellent correlation with the results of a series of Selective Hydrophobic Coagulation (SHC) tests conducted with run-of-mine coal and graphite samples.

Santa Fe Pacific Gold Corporation (SFPGC) conducted pressure oxidation pilot plant studies at Hazen Research, Inc. on the Twin Creeks refractory carbonaceous gold ores during 1993 and 1994. Previous laboratory investigations demonstrated very good gold recoveries of 90 to 95%, using CIL cyanidation after batch pressure oxidation. However, results from the pilot plant showed that several ore types responded very poorly, with gold extractions of only 45 to 75%. Since these poor recoveries were unexpected, pilot plant testing was suspended for approximately four months while extensive research activities were conducted to determine the cause(s) and identify potential solutions. This paper describes the batch and pilot plant test results, the research activities that eventually identified the cause of the gold recovery problem, and the final semicontinuous and continuous pilot plant operations that confirmed possible solutions.

Five kaolin crudes from the state of Georgia in the U.S. were investigated for processability with chemically enhanced magnetic separation (CEMS) technologies developed by Cytec. The technologies used magnetic reagent alone or in conjunction with specialty chemicals to selectively agglomerate and magnetize the desired minerals (impurities) to be removed by the conventional magnetic separation equipment. All crudes indicated treatability using CEMS. Results indicated that CEMS technology could be applied to different kaolin crudes to obtain a product with titanium impurities less than 0.6% TiO2 from individual crudes. The features and benefits of the technologies were also reviewed.

Column Flotation cannot be used indiscriminately. Based on extensive pilot plant experience at Lakefield Research, a number of limiting parameters have been identified for the application of column cell flotation. Parameters of importance are the use of wash water, flotable mineral content, pulp viscosity, type of mineral selectivity being sodght and degree of mineral liberation. The paper discusses when wash water should be used and the positioning of a column within the circuit as this is important to maintain a sound water balance for the circuit and prevent excessive circulating loads. Other areas of debate are pulp chemistry, very low and high weight recovery, for which the conventional column is a poor selection of equipment, and treatment of complex ores, where the separation of valuable minerals is more difficult than non-sulphide, sulphide mineral separation. Based on these observations, the application of column flotation must be carefully considered or can be optimised.

CLIMAX ore is an altered and highly silicified granite, about half of the gangue being quartz. Molybdenite is the only mineral recovered and most of it is intimately associated with the quartz in fine veinlets. Other minerals are molybdite, pyrite, and chalcopyrite. Although the molybdite may be readily extracted by hydrometallurgical methods, its content is too low to make this profitable. The pyrite ranges from 2 to 5 per cent and the chalcopyrite from 0.03 to 0.05 per cent. There is not enough copper to make its recovery attractive and one of the problems is its elimination, and that of pyrite iron, from the final product. On account of the high degree of dissemination of the molybdenite and the necessity of eliminating the iron and copper, fine-grinding followed by flotation is the only known feasible method of concentration. "An electro-optical method was used to quantify superoxide (SO) release from single rat pulmonary alveolar macrophages (PAM) exposed in vitro to respirable quartz and kaolin dusts and in vivo to quartz. Release was determined by measuring the reduction of nitroblue tdrazolium (NBT) to a diformazan precipitate at 550 nm from video-recorded images of individual cells. In vitro exposure to 0.025 or 0.05 mg/ml kaolin for 40 minutes resulted in no significant differences in either the total diformazan produced (max) or the maximum rate of diformazan production (R)./n vitro exposure to 0.025 mg/ml c1uartz decreased max 38 percent while no significant change was found using 0.05 mg/ml. However, R was decreased 31 percent and 24 percent for the low and high dose, respectively. In contrast, PAM obtained from animals exposed in vivo to quartz dust for two or four weeks in inhalation chambers exhibited increased production of diformazan. However, only PAM analyzed three days post-exposure showed significant increases, while PAM from animals sacrificed ten or 31 days post-exposure were not significantly different from control. The combined in vitro and in vivo quartz results might suggest that there is an initital acute response to exposure that decreases the ability of PAM to produce SO, followed by recruitment of production of PAM with increased SO producing capability. It appears that removal of animals from the source of exposure permits PAM to return to control levels of SO production by31 days. Whether this would be true for chronic exposure remains to be elucidated.IntroductionPulmonary alveolar macrophages (PAM) protect the lungs by phagocytizing foreign debris and bacteria.(1) This process involves ingestion as well as destruction of foreign matter. Phagocytosis usually is accompanied by a respiratory burst which increases cellular oxygen consumption leading to the release of highly reactive oxygen metabolites.(2) These agents have been implicated in the killing of bacteria by phagocytes, but they have also been shown to be toxic and,have been linked to cancer, emphysema, arthritis, diabetes, and other diseases.(3) Toxic effects may be a result of 1) an abnormally low production of metabolites, resulting in damage to lung tissue by the respired bacteria and/or dusts; or 2) an abnormally high production resulting in direct damage to lung tissue by metabolites themselves."

In the present study, the size distribution, Fo(v), of organic drops produced in a continuous-mixing vessel has been determined experimentally for various conditions. The organic phase used was a 1: 1 mixture of a salicylaldoxime (LIX 860N-IC) and a ketoxime (LIX 64-IC) in an aliphatic diluent (Escaid 103). The aqueous phase was a copper sulfate solution. The results indicated that an increase in stirring speed, extractant concentration, and pH produced smaller drops. The effect of the stirring speed was the most significant, decreasing the average volume of drops by 57 % for a change from 300 to 400 rpm. On the contrary, an increase in the dispersed phase fraction, copper sulfate concentration, and retention time produced larger drops. Changes in temperature from 23 to 30°C did not affect significantly the drop sizes. In all cases, the experimental drop size distributions could be accurately represented by a lognormal distribution.

Improved models continue to be produced for the major pits which Increase confidence levels required by Gold Fields management and provide the basis for more accurate long and intermediate term mine planning. Various kriging and non-kriging estimation techniques are used at Gold Fields -Chimney Creek Mine. This paper reviews the modeling histories and, current procedures used to construct these models with particular emphasis on the North Pit deposit.

"Sensor based automatic ore sorting technologies are used in the minerals industries to efficiently remove waste and submarginal grade material from crushed and screened run-of-mine (ROM) ore, producing a coarse (typically >10 mm) upgraded preconcentrate at an early stage in the mineral processing circuit. This avoids additional energy intensive downstream processing of this rejected component of the ROM feed, leading to lower unit operating costs and reduced tailings disposal volumes.Test work on bulk low-grade gold ore stockpile samples from Central Norseman Gold Proprietary Limited has been conducted, indicating high gold recoveries as well as high material rejection rates. A financial model, based on these results, evaluates grade sensitivity and identifies a minimum stockpile grade for adequate financial returns. The base case modelling estimates that the ex-stockpile grade (including the fines bypassed fraction) can be more than doubled through ore sorting and that the project will be highly viable with strong cash flow generation at stockpile grades as low as 0.7 g/t gold. The modelling will enable the company to benchmark ore sorting options against stockpile reclaim and screening operations currently employed. Citation:Parry, A N and van Wyk, G, 2016. A major limitation to maximising the rate of gold extraction in commercial operations occurs as a consequence of the limited solubility of oxygen in cyanide liquors. The use of additions of solid inorganic peroxides as an in-situ supply of oxygen to the lixiviant has been studied, in particular in its application to heap leaching. Experimental studies showed-that the release of oxygen into solution from these peroxides is very sensitive to solution pH. Agitated leaching tests showed that, when either Ba, Ca or Sr peroxides were used as the-sole source of oxygen, both the rate and extent of gold extraccion was enhanced. Column leach tests were used to simulate heap leach conditions. These showed that significant increases in the rate of gold extraction could be achieved by additions of calcium peroxide, made to the ore, prior to it being loaded into the columns.

Projections of coal reserves in Central Appalachia are essential for long-term planning in the region. Annual production is declining in some states, such as Virginia, and mineable reserves for the Central Appalachian Coalfield are challenged by difficult geological, mining, and market conditions. In order to project coal mining longevity in this region, interviews with mining companies were conducted to assist in the determination and assessment of technical and economic factors that impact coal seam mineability. This information was applied to seam and coal reserve data developed by state and federal governments. The results were carefully analyzed to determine the effects of various factors on the overall mineable coal reserve base.

An investigation of several trace elements distributed among sulfide minerals from deposits located in the southeastern United States was conducted. The deposits investigated are distributed within both the Blue Ridge Province and the Piedmont Province, which are contiguous geographic provinces. Twenty five deposits were examined;' eleven in the Blue Ridge Province and fourteen in the Piedmont Province. Figure 1 shows the locations of deposits investigated. In the deposits investigated, the mineral phases examined were pyrite, pyrrhotite, chalcopyrite, and sphalerite. These phases were chosen because of their relatively widespread occurrence, although no pyrrhotite was seen in the Piedmont Province. A total of 116 polished surfaces of ores were prepared, and mineral phases were collected from these surfaces for analysis. Samples were analyzed for cobalt, nickel, manganese, lead, tin, chromium, molybdenum, and gold. A total of 372 analyses were made. Trace elements were determined by atomic absorption spectrophotometry following standard procedures. In this study, trace elements are defined as those elements which are present in the mineral but which do not affect the chemical formula for that mineral. Lead is considered as a trace element only in ores where little or no lead sulfide could be identified as a distinct mineral phase.

A new innovative process for one-step and cleaner extraction of lead from spent lead-acid battery by reductive sulfur-fixing smelting was presented. This paper summarized and discussed several potential sulfur-fixing agents and molten salts which can be used in this new technique. Thermodynamic analysis involving reaction mechanism, ΔGT and predominance-area diagrams of different smelting systems were performed, respectively. The results proved the technical feasibility and high-efficiency of this process. Copper oxide ash (CuO), zinc oxide ash (ZnO) and iron oxide bearing residues (FexOy) can be used as sulfur-fixing agent to extract lead through exchange reactions. Sulfur-fixed efficiency of CuO, ZnO and FeO decrease slightly in turn. Sulfur contained in PbSO4 is fixed in form of Cu2S, ZnS and FeS respectively which avoids SO2 emission. The addition of molten salt can significantly decrease temperature of reductive sulfur-fixing reactions. Molten salt can be regenerated and recycled in smelting system after filtering solid residues.

Lightweight magnesium alloys are gaining in popularity for applications in the automotive and aerospace industries, Their use, however, remains limited due to their relatively low strength and creep properties. Lost Foam Casting (LFC) is a new casting process and the strength of foam cast magnesium alloys has not been investigated in great detail thus far, In this research, magnesium alloy AZ91 E and three new alloys were cast by the LFC process to study the effect of varying aluminum and manganese content on the alloy's tensile properties, The study reveals, that the tensile strength of the magnesium alloy is closely related to the relative amount of aluminum in the system. Formation of ß-Mg17Al12 phase was seen to significantly affect the yield strength and ductility of the alloy, Furthermore, formation of manganese intermetallic compounds was seen to effectively increase yield strength of the base alloy, Individual alloy morphologies were analyzed via optical and SEM techniques.

The Bureau of Mines is currently engaged in a continuing investigation of the thermodynamic properties of certain inorganic compounds. As a part of this investigation, the heat contents of bismuth and cerous chlorides were measured throughout the temperature ranges of 370° to 630° K. and 370° to 1,200° K., respectively. Equations representing heat contents as a function of temperature were derived from the data by the method of least squares. These equations were used to calculate heat contents at selected temperature intervals ranging from the ice point to 650° K. for bismuth chloride and to 1,200° K. for cerous chloride; also, the heats of fusion of both compounds were calculated at their respective melting points. EXPERIMENTAL Materials The cerous chloride used in this investigation was supplied by the National Carbon Company of Cleveland, Ohio. A chemical analysis indicated Ce 56.57 percent and Cl 43.39 percent. No attempt was made to purify the compound or identify impurities since the analysis showed only about 0.04 percent total impurities. Reagent grade bismuth chloride was used without additional purification.

"Inhalation of certain forms of silica, asbestos and some other respirable dusts can result in pulmonary fibrosis, characterized by destruction of the surfaces of alveoli and respiratory bronchioles. Fibrous thickening of the alveolar septa decreases the lung's capacity for gas exchange.Pulmonary macrophage damage by respired dust may initiate the fibrotic response.In one proposed mechanism, dust particles interact with the plasma membrane of a macrophage. This damages the cell or induces some hyperactivity of the cell, resulting in excessive release of lysosomal enzymes and reactive forms of oxygen (1). These reactive enzymes or radicals then damage the alveolar surface epithelial cells. A second mechanism has also been pro¬posed (2,3) in which dust damage to the macrophage causes the release of mediator substances which induce pulmonary fibroblast cell proliferation and increased collagen synthesis. This produces fibrous tissue in the terminal air spaces (4,5).Mineral surface interactions with plasma membrane lipoproteins have been proposed as a mechanism of lytic damage of pulmonary cells by silica dust in numerous models (6,7). The significance of dust surface proper¬ties has been further revealed in studies showing significant changes in dust induced cytotoxicity as a function of dust surface crystallinity and organic or inorganic contamination or coating of mineral surfaces (8,9). Such modification of the mineral surface might interfere with surface sites responsible for the toxicity of dusts for pulmonary macrophages, thus interrupting the early stages of the process of fibrosis.In vitro cellular assay systems using erythrocyte hemolysis or the release of macrophage cytosolic or lysosomal enzymes following dust challenge, have been used to analyze the initial mechanism of dust damage to cells. However the ability of these assays to predict the pulmonary disease producing potential of various dusts is imperfect owing to some ""false positive"" results. These assays as performed are therefore questionable models for the initial lesion in pneumoconiosis or silicosis. In particular, kaolin frequently is found to have comparable biological activity to silica quartz in these assays (10,11).Silica and kaolin have distinctly different fibrogenic potentials. Silica is highly fibrogenic, resulting in both acute and chronic silicosis (12). Some epidemiological data and animal experimentation data have indicated that long term exposure to kaolin can result in pneumoconiosis; however, kaolin is relatively benign as compared to silica (13-18). Kaolin is also of interest because it is one of the major mineral inclusions in Eastern U.S. bituminous coals. We have observed that exposing respirable sized native silica or kaolin for two hours to pulmonary macrophages results in a greater enzyme release for kaolin exposures, on a dust mass basis. Exposure of erythrocytes to the dusts also results in greater levels of hemolysis by kaolin for equal mass respirable dust doses. Therefore, these results do not correlate positively with known disease inducing potentials of the two dusts.Characterization of physical and chemical surface properties of dusts involved in occupational exposures, and characterization of the alteration of those surface properties which are likely to occur upon deposition of the dust in the lung, should improve the identification of respiratory disease hazards.Inhaled dust particles deposited in the lower respiratory tract will come in contact with pulmonary surfactant. This surfactant forms a surface film on and emulsion in the liquid hypophase coating of the alveoli and respiratory bronchioles. The primary constituent of this pulmonary surfactant is the lipid diacyl glycerophosphorylcholine, lecithin (19). Because this lipid is also a major component of cell membranes, it is possible that surfactant can interact with mineral dust to alter its Interaction with macrophages and other pulmonary cells and, thus, it"

Pittini Group has contracted Danieli in 2011 for the supply and replacement of the existing EAF at Ferriere Nord Plant in Osoppo. This was a very challenging project: giving the fact that the Meltshop was operating already under very high performance level, there were many elements involved for the project to improve (reduce the amount of charges, promote highest possible chemical energy utilization, allow best optimization on existing transformer power, modification on Drop Out box and Water Cooled Duct, Hydraulic System for EAF, Scrap Bucket design to fit to new EAF with existing loading and transport system, Automation System Review and Upgrade) as well as limitations of the existing installation (limited space, lifting capacity building and cranes and the required solutions for fast shell and roof exchange). All furnace parts, as well as installation engineering, were developed and discussed carefully with the Customer to either provide proven and reliable concepts, but also to define solutions for fast installation/maintenance access and quick exchange for offline turnaround. In the end, from disassembly of existing equipment up to the first heat of the new furnace, only 38 days were necessary. First heat was made on January 24th 2013, on the 6th production day 32 heats where produced at nominal design capacity and 28 days after start up 100,000 t liquid steel have already been produced.

The use of thermal integrity testing to verify the quality of deep foundations has increased significantly in the UK and other world markets over the last 5 years. The introduction of distributed fibre optic sensing to this field has broadened the range of applications in which it can be deployed and the types of foundations which can be tested. This paper presents how fibre optic sensing technology can be successfully deployed in the construction environment the range of foundation techniques to which it can be applied. Alongside developments in the practical aspects of thermal testing, progress has been made in establishing assessment criteria which can be used to evaluate the results. This paper presents recent examples of comparative studies on foundations which include both thermal integrity testing, cross hole sonic logging and intrusive coring. The use of distributed strain measurement during pile load testing presents an alternative means to verify the assessment criteria used for integrity testing. This new approach can achieve comparable results to foundation exhumation or intrusive investigation and at a fraction of the cost. This paper presents the findings of several such studies, highlighting the benefits and opportunities for future improvement of the method.

FOR more than 25 years a few business men who represent virile private enterprise in the Pacific Northwest have been trying to awaken the community to the potential benefits of an open Columbia River. No threat of government com- petition then hung over the industry, which was adjusted to state regulation. Numerous sites were engineered and the findings were laid before the operators of heavy industry in the East, Middle West, and South -even of Europe. These engineering data became, if not the basis, the inspiration upon which the U. S. Army Engineers eventually were to "build the Columbia River Bible" - their great document known as House Document 103, the report on the Columbia River and minor tributaries.
