IN recent years, there have been many changes in mining operations in the Lake Superior district. To follow these trends on the Menominee Range of Michigan, information has been assembled from all of the iron informatior]mining operations in the area. There are 15 operating underground mines in the Iron River-Crystal Falls area of the Menominee Range. Within the past two years, two idle properties were reopened pasttwoyears,and are now producing, and a third and fourth are being reopened. Also, there are two siliceous openpits operated by independent companies outside this immediate area. Six companies operate the underground mines, employing some 1850 employees. Table I shows pertinent facts about these properties. During 1949, the largest mine in Iron County shipped 571,287 tons, and one of the newer mines shipped 39,378 tons, with a range total to 3,535,-373 tons. Since the Menominee Range was opened in the 1870's, the mines in Iron County have shipped 85,890,922 tons. From an operator's viewpoint rather than a geologist's, the ore is' classified as semi-hard, composed of hematite and limonite. It is not as soft as the ores of the Marquette Range nor is it as hard as the hard ores of the Marquette and Vermillion Ranges. The ore bodies have slate hanging walls and slate footwalls. In most cases the hanging walls and footwalls are soft and high in sulphur. The sulphur comes from pyrite, and these slates will ignite when piled more than 6 to 8 ft high. Ore is mined on this range by: 1—Sub-level stop-ing; 2—Shrinkage stoping; 3—Sub-level caving; 4— Block caving; 5—Top slicing. The predominance of these methods is in the order named. Underground drilling is important in the mining cycle. Some changes made and trends toward future changes fall into four categories: Drill bits, drill steel, drill machines, and compressed air pressures. Several types of bits have been tried and are in use. They include the detachable tungsten carbide, insert bit; the intraset steel bit, which is a conventional steel rod with tungsten carbide insert; the one-use bit; and the multiple-use bit. For many years, detachable multiple-use bits have been standard. In tests conducted recently to im- prove drilling efficiency, this bit was used as the basis for comparison. Under existing conditions, a multiple-use bit can be resharpened about three times before it is discarded. A thorough test of 2-in. tungsten carbide threaded bits was conducted under various ground conditions. 1—The drilled footage ranged from 48 to 600 ft per bit; averaging 357 ft per bit. Under these same conditions, a multiple-use bit ranged from 8 to 80 ft per bit. 2—The bit cost was greater for the insert bit in each case. 3—The average drilling speed for the insert bit was 12 in. in 62 sec and for the multiple-use bit was 12 in. in 64 sec. In a second test, 2V4 -in. tungsten carbide bits with the large 1 3/16-in. thread were used in moderately soft ground on a 152-lb drifting drill on a long feed jumbo. 1—The drilled footage ranged from 450 to 5000 ft per bit, averaging 1810 ft per bit. Under these same conditions, a multiple-use bit averaged 64 ft per bit. 2—The bit cost was reduced by the use of the insert bit. 3—No increase in drilling speed was recorded. 4—Minimum footage obtained was caused by thread failure. To improve the thread life, thread size on the rod was increased and the bit was attached to the rod with a pipe wrench. After this, bits failed in equal proportions because of cracked skirts, broken inserts, and gage loss. Tungsten carbide bits are now used in the operation where this second test was conducted because labor costs were lowered as a result of reducing the number of bits being changed by the miners. At the same operation and under the same conditions as the second test, 1Y4-in. insert bits with standard 1-in. threads were used. These bits did not drill much more than 300 ft before thread failure and were then welded to the rods and used until total failure. Sometimes this footage was considerable, sometimes it was not. Carbon monoxide (CO) sensors are used in mine fire early-warning systems. Experiments were conducted by the U.S. Bureau of Mines with six diffusion-type CO sensors to determine their response to a reference CO concentration under both static and dynamic flow conditions. Static experiments were conducted with 0.5 L/min flow of 16 ppm CO in N2 through 8-and 12-L chambers. Dynamic flow experiments were conducted in two environmental chambers: One had directional flow capability of 1 m/s, and the second provided moderately nondirectional flow as high as 1.8 m/s. Reference CO concentrations of 13.5 to 19 ppm in air were used for the dynamic experiments. The results of the static experiments demonstrated that the sensors consistently underestimated the reference gas concentration. The dynamic experiment results showed the sensors provided reasonable agreement with the reference gas concentration when directional flow effects were not considered. Directional flow effects were evaluated for two sensors. One of the sensors showed a strong dependence upon the relative orientation of the diffusion tube with respect to flow direction. The second sensor did not show a dependence upon flow direction. The sensors' directional flow effect is significant for their proper in-mine utilization.

This U.S. Bureau of Mines (USBM) report conveys the results of an economic analysis of minerals in the West Mojave Management Area (WMMA), including the Desert Tortoise Priority Habitat (DTPH), a proposed special land management area. Undiscovered mineral resources were estimated for the entire WMMA, which totals 8.7 million acres. Known mineral resources were studied for the DTPH, which is an area of 1.2 million acres contained within the WMMA. Federal lands within the WMMA are managed by the Bureau of Land Management (BLM). The WMMA includes Federal, State, and private lands in the western portion of San Bernardino County and the eastern portion of Kern County. The center of the study area is 20 miles northwest of Barstow, California (Figures 1 and 2).

TAXES in general are onerous and are not a pleas- ant subject for discourse. There are, however, some very cogent reasons why we should dedicate a part of our thoughts and services to the solution of our taxation problems: The happiness of every individual in the United States depends on the maintenance of a stable government. The collection of taxes is an indispensable function of a stable government, and the power to collect taxes depends in part on the question whether taxes are fair and equitable. As representatives of the mining industry it is our duty to .protect it from tax burdens that are discriminatory or- unjust, As citizens we find that taxation is incessantly endeavouring to unravel the knots in our purse-strings. Many members of the Institute may be consulted .by clients on taxation problems, especially the phases which re- late to depletion and valuation. It is the hope of the writer that the discussion of some of the current depletion and valuation problems will stimulate interest in the problems, and as a consequence of this new interest facts will be ventilated, opinions rendered and services performed, which will be a means of solving the problems to the satisfaction of all parties interested.

Discovered in 1954 and mined since 1966, the X41 copper orebodies have produced over 143 Mt @ 3.3 per cent copper. By June 2002 the production from these orebodies had depleted the Mineral Resource to 36.6 Mt @ 2.8 per cent Cu (including 31.5 Mt @ 2.5 per cent Cu combined 2002 Ore Reserve). Mine production will ramp down to cessation beyond ten years. The 2002 Copper Business Study was commissioned to review the status of the Mount Isa copper business and to optimise the long-term strategy of the operations. The study resulted in a vastly improved geological and geostatistical model, and financial studies led to the optimisation of mine cut-off grades. Utilising these new models, a near-mine target generation workshop was conducted by the copper stream geology team. The workshop focussed on exploration for new ore sources and the extension of existing orebodies to supplement the Mineral Resource inventory for future conversion to Ore Reserves. Several prospective targets were identified and the Conceptual Northern 1100 Drilling program was subsequently designed. This paper shall discuss the practicalities of near-mine target generation in Mount Isa, the issues faced when locating and preparing drill sites in a mature mine environment, and the preliminary results of the drilling program so far.

A Large Earth Cum Rock Fill, ECRF Dam is under construction at Polavaram in the state of Andhra Pradesh in India as part of an irrigation project. The Embankment crest width of the dam is 12.5m and base width is of approximately 136.75m with a stepped sloping height of 27m on both upstream/downstream sides. Once the 1.2m Thick Plastic concrete cut-off wall is constructed below the dam along the longitudinal central axis to avoid seepage, this magnificent structure will be supported on a series of Deep Mixing Columns and Stone Columns that are evenly arranged under the footprint of ECRF Dam forming a smooth transition of gradually reducing stiffness moduli of treated ground from the center of the embankment, where the foundation stresses are high, towards the edges in order to be able to progressively limit the settlements under the dam to a specified allowable limit. As such the required post treatment stiffness in case of stone columns is 2 times of the in-situ stiffness of foundation soil, whereas it is expected to be 5 times improvement for Deep Mixing as per project specifications. Laboratory testing and Field Trials undertaken successfully to verify the design.

The Homes take Mining Company at Lead, South Dakota has a yearly production of 1,868,741 tons of ore produced from horizontal cut-and-fill stopes and timber cut-and-fill stopes. This production, in addition to the necessary development (drifts and raises), requires 5,168,271 feet of drilling annually. The rock for the most part consists of quartz; mica schist; and cummingtonite schist; and must be considered as relatively hard. Penetration rates average about 15 inches per minute using an operating air pressure of 100 psi. The rock is tough, rather than brittle, and dulling occurs quite rapidly. The average regrind period is approximately 19 feet per regrind using a 1-7/16 inch carbide bit. At the present time, all drilling is accomplished with 2-5/8 inch bore airleg mounted drills, and 2-3/4 inch and 3-inch diameter bore -stopers (raising only). These machines are all direct striking, with 4-1/4 inch chucks. 7/8-inch hexagonal carbon drill steel with forged collars are used in conjunction with 1-7/16 inch multi-use, threaded, carbide bits. 62,793 rods, and 16,234 bits are used to maintain the yearly production. The number of rods noted are the rods that were sent: underground, both new and reconditioned.

The objective of the paper is to develop a material balance calculation procedure for a production unit involving two plants separated by a pipeline. The case study is taken from the oil sands industry. The raw sands are first mixed with water in a conditioning plant, then transported through a pipeline to an oil extraction plant. The combination of pipeline dimensions and nominal throughput creates a significant variable time lag between the two plants. As usual, mass balance calculations required for the evaluation of plant performance indicators, such as bitumen recovery, are inaccurate due to measurement errors. In addition, in the present case study, the time lag of the pipe creates an additional source of uncertainty, which may lead to misinterpretations and wrong decisions. Raw data are usually reconciled through steady-state mass balancing, to correct for measurement errors. However, because of the significant pipeline dynamic lag, standard steady-state daily mass balance may fail at giving an appropriate picture of the operations. The proposed solution to the data reconciliation problem includes the use of a pipeline plug-flow model in the mass balance calculation. To fulfil the industrial constraint that current data reconciliation must not modify past reconciled values, while still satisfying dynamic constraints, a daily one-step method, i.e. a unitary filter-ing horizon, is recommended. The method is illustrated with simulation data, and the results com-pared to those of standard data reconciliation methods.

CERN, the European Laboratory for Particle Physics, are upgrading their existing particle accelerator for the next generation of experiments and have three major packages of underground construction work in progress. Each package involves the construction of shafts, cavern, tunnels and surface buildings. This paper gives an overview of CERN, the LHC Project and a more detailed discussion of design process, design review and construction works of Experimental Point 5. The LHC works at Point 5 include two large shafts, two major parallel caverns with a total span of 50 m, which are separated by a 7 m wide and 28 m high concrete pillar, and a system of secondary tunnels and caverns. The overburden ground consists of around 50 m of water bearing moraine (silty, clayey gravels and sands) overlying 20 mof molasse, which consists of horizontally bedded marls and sandstones. The shaft shave been constructed with ground freezing, primary concrete lining, membrane and secondary slip formed concrete lining. The concrete pillar was then excavated and concreted in advance of excavation of the two caverns. Cavern construction includes primary support of shotcrete lining and rock bolts, followed by waterproof membrane and primary support of shotcrete lining and rock bolts, followed by water proof membrane and insitu concrete secondary lining.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines estimates the identified helium resources of the United States at 630 Bcf as of December 31, 1990. This includes 295 Bcf of demonstrated reserves, 87 Bcf of demonstrated marginal reserves, and 42 Bcf of demonstrated subeconomic resources. The identified resources include 161 Bcf of helium in inferred and marginal reserves and 45 Bcf in inferred subeconomic resources. The identified helium resources contained on Federal lands are approximately 170 Bcf, including 32 Bcf in underground storage in the Cliffside Gasfield near Amarillo, TX. In addition to the identified helium resources, undiscovered helium resources in the United States are estimated at a most likely volume of 103 Bcf, with a maximum volume of 259 Bcf and a minimum volume of 41 Bcf. Also reported are 43 Bcf of helium in nonconventional and low-helium-content natural gases. Current extraction of helium in the United States occurs mostly from natural gases produced from the Hugoton gas area in Kansas, Oklahoma, and Texas, and the Riley Ridge area in southwest Wyoming. Helium extracted from natural gas in the United States in 1990 was 2.5 Bef. If current trends continue, some shortfalls in helium supply may occur in about 5 to 10 years.

The Samarco pipeline, the longest in the world for iron ore slurry transportation, started operation in 1977 to transport concentrate from the Germano facilities, in the state of Minas Gerais, to the pelletizing plant, located 396 km away, in the state of Espirito Santo, on the south-east coast of Brazil. Designed for a nominal capacity of 12 million tons per year, the pipeline reached 15.5 million/year due to operational improvement and, in late 2005, it was resized to transport 16.5 million tons per year, with the installation of a booster station. In order to ensure the accurate performance of the system, a pipeline cleaning programme was carried out and, since it has been29 years from the operation start-up, precise knowledge of the pipe condition would be fundamental to guarantee the success of the project. The cleaning programme demonstrated the potential of operational gains from this initiative, and its effect on the corrosion control and future measures, which should be permanently adopted to maintain the improved capacity. The intelligent pig runs provided essential data used to establish a pipeline integrity programme that allowed Samarco to develop a pipe repair plan based on the severity and significance of the features and to implement a future pipe replacement plan.

5.1 Incorporation with the Master Design Simulator Figure 1 diagrammatically illustrates the interaction between the various sub-systems that go to make up the total Master Design Simulator. As a total system, all sub-systems will be scheduled as needed by the controlling program. The data require¬ments for each will be made available either by providing common storage in core or by outputting data to external storage devices such as magnetic tape, disk, drum, etc. The incorporation of the Geology and Reserves sub-system into the total system involves the establishment of an interface through which data may be readily dissemminated in either direction. This interface will be provided by a geological data library in which all information available from the sub-system is stored and can be readily accessed by the main program and/or other sub-systems. In Figure 7, the information flow between the Geology and Reserves sub¬system and other sub-systems is shown. 5.2 Independent Function Geology and Reserves sub-system is capable of functioning as an independent unit or in direct communication with another sub¬system. This is possible by either continued use of the data library or by redirecting output to other peripheral devices separate from the total system libraries. (Figure 8).

Polymetallic nodules are a widespread resource in the Pacific Ocean, particularly in the areas of Clarion-Clipperton (Cronan, 2000). The most abundant mineral phases are formed by iron and manganese oxides, with minor elements such as nickel, copper, cobalt, molybdenum and rare earths elements (Cronan, 1977; Cronan and Moorby, 1981; Iyer and Sharma, 1990; Mangini et al. 1990; Banerjee et al. 1991). In the Clarion-Clipperton Zone (CCZ), several authors mention that there are three main mineral species of manganese oxides, which have been recognized and which are associated with different processes of formation: todorokita (Mn2+, Ca, Mg) Mn34+ O7. H2), vernadite dMnO and birnessite enriched in Fe and (Na, Ca) 0.5 (Mn4+, Mn3+) 2O4. 1.5 H2O. In nodules of hydrothermal origin have been found todorokite, birnessite, vernadite, goethite and pyrolusite. Although there are many oxides and hydroxides of manganese and iron in amorphous and microcrystalline phases that make up the bulk of the nodule (Frondel et al. 1960; Cronan 1977; Dymond 1981; Calvert and Piper, 1984; Aplin and Cronan, 1985; Martin and Lallier, 1993; Achurra et al. 2009), identifying specific mineral phases is difficult due to the intergrowth of different phases and associated detrital material.

WHEN there is occasion to make structural use of metals at temperatures above 900°C (1652°F), the choice of alloys is severely limited, and those materials which meet special requirements as to density, strength, toughness, and resistance to creep, oxidation, or fatigue at such temperatures are at a premium. Any new type of high temperature alloy which is found to be outstanding with respect to several of these properties is therefore likely to find special applications for which it is uniquely advantageous as compared to other alloys. Such is the case with the 7 titanium-aluminum alloys. This y phase is an intermediate phase based on the composition TiAl, and extends from about 35.5 to 44.5 wt pct Al at temperatures up to 1000°C, above which the field broadens to include 60 pct A1 at 1340°C.' The alloys of principal interest have a narrow melting range, with 7 forming by the peri-tectic reaction, melt + ß=y at about 1460°C. Unlike most intermediate phases, the binary alloys containing titanium and aluminum in approximately equiatomic proportion possess low room temperature hardness,' in addition to which they have low density, good resistance to oxidation, and relatively high modulus of elasticity.' The Kayford, Boone and Nicholas Division of Bethlehem Mines Corporation operates a modern coal preparation plant in Van, West Virginia. Since the start-up of the Van Plant in 1976 until the summer of 1980, the refuse handling system proved to be a costly maintenance problem and a material handling bottleneck. During the 1980 two-week miner's vacation the original system, which included two screw conveyors and a drag conveyor, was replaced by an installation utilizing two Flexowall steep angle belt conveyors. This paper describes the technical and economic analysis that led to the new installation and reviews its first year operating performance. The Van facility is a heavy media plant designed to handle 127 mm x 0 raw metallurgical quality coal from the Powellton seam at a maximum feed rate of 590 TPH (metric tons per hour). Depending on mining conditions, the clean coal recovery rate averages between 50 and 65%. The plant is set up with three types of cleaning circuits. Coarse material (127 mm x 12 mm) is cleaned in heavy media baths. Intermediate size material (12 mm x .5 mm) is cleaned in heavy media cyclones. Fine coal (.5 mm x 0) is cleaned in a hydrocyclone1 froth flotation circuit.

The Ce-Cu phase diagram was investigated by differential thermal analysis and rnetallography. Two congruent melting compounds, CeCu2 (817°C) and CeCua (938°C), and three incongruent cornpounds, CeCu (516°C), CeCu, (796°C), and CeCu, CERIUM and copper have been suggested as possible diluents in a liquid-plutonium fueled reactor. As part of the determination of the Ce-Cu-Pu ternary phase diagram, a review Of the Ce-Cu system (798°C), are present in this system. Eutectics exist at 28 at. pct Cu (424°C), 74 at. pct Cu (756°C), and 91 at. pct Cu (876°C). The purity of the cerium used has an important effect on the results obtained by differential thermal analysis. was considered necessary. Previous work by Hanaman was conducted with relatively impure metal: 96.7 pct Ce with 2.5 pct other rare earths and 0.5 pct Fe as major impurities. The metal had a melting point of 715°C as compared to the melting point for pure cerium of 804°C as reported by Spedding and Daane.2 Results presented in this work were obtained primarily by differential thermal analysis (DTA) and metallographic examination of slow-cooled or quenched samples.

Ferrous fractions recovered from urban refuse were tested by the U.S. Bureau of Mines, U.S. Department of the Interior, to assess their character, composition, and response to detinning. This research was conducted as part of the Bureau's efforts to conserve mineral resources through recycling. Results from laboratory and pilot tests established the technical feasibility of detinning scrap recovered from household refuse. Detinned products containing less than 0.03 percent residual tin were produced. Concentrations of other residual elements were determined and compared with those in existing commercial scrap and with proposed specifications. Studies were extended to include evaluations under commercial conditions. Preliminary tests on 5-1/2 short tons of ferrous fractions revealed the need for adequate shredding to assure optimum metal-caustic contact and minimize retention of tin-bearing rinse solution in the final baled product. The washed metal product contained 0.06 percent residual tin. Subsequent melt tests showed a yield of 91.4 percent. Based on these studies, full-scale commercial demonstrations showed that detinned bales equivalent to No. 1 bundle quality could be produced in carload quantities. Up to 5 pounds of tin per gross ton of scrap is con-currently recovered during the detinning process.

In June of 2002 Hilti North America received the first MSHA permissible approval for usage of a powder actuated tool device in a gassy mine atmosphere. The purpose of this paper is to discuss the implementation of this commonly utilized tool technology in the construction industry, to the underground gassy mining industry over the course of the last 5 years. Prior to June of 2002, underground gassy mining industry had attached materials such as ventilation curtains, power cables, communication cables, signage, and other materials by either manually driving individual spads or nails into the mine roof or rib or by attachment to existing roof bolt bearing plates. The Hilti DX 460 powder actuated tool is portable, durable, and lightweight (4.5 pounds). The Hilti DX 460 powder actuated tool system is powered by Hilti .27 caliber permissible explosive boosters. The energy force of the Hilti .27 booster?s acts on a captive piston principle in the Hilti DX 460 powder actuated tool, that applies the setting force for the direct fastening to the individual fastener chosen for the application by the end user. Each year Hilti can be called upon by MSHA to provide booster materials for re-testing per our Hilti DX PAD 1/00 approval.
