From time to time the Bureau of Mines has issued publications dealing with the various classes of explosion-proof mining machinery that have been tested and approved as permissible for use in mines having atmospheres that may become inflammable by reason of the inadvertent presence of gas or dust. These publications are confined almost entirely to description of the features contributing directly or indirectly to the prevention of explosion or shock hazards, and are intended to give inspectors, safety engineers, and others already familiar with the general safety requirements more detailed information on the safety features of the design of a particular machine. As a background for papers describing permissible machines and to avoid the necessity of duplicating descriptions of methods of conducting investigations and tests of such machinery, Bureau of Mines Bulletin 305, Inspection and Testing of Mine-Type Electrical Equipment for Permissibility, was pub¬lished in 1929. Three bulletins giving detailed descriptions of the three most numerous types of machines have been issued, viz., Bulletin 313, Permissible Storage-Battery Locomotive and Power Trucks. Bulletin 343, Permissible Coal-Handling Equipment. Bulletin 392, Permissible Coal-Cutting Equipment.

The satisfactory testing and characterisation of mineralisation amenable to heap leaching, is of prime importance to successful operation of a project. This paper outlines a methodology for assessing material suitability. A general model is used for classing material types for suitability for treatment and for economic analysis. The four levels of these are overburden, oxide, transitional and unoxidised materials. During exploration, reverse circulation (RC) drilling can be used effectively to define these zones by a combination of logging, analysis and provision of cuttings for column leach and bottle roll trials. RC cuttings can he used effectively for column leach trials, when calibrated against conventional processing-sized samples, obtained from surface. Tbis allows metallurgical testing to depth and definition of transitional ore types and the base of oxidation, accurately and economically with an acceptable density of samples. The accurate prediction of base of oxidation and variations in recovery with depth and ore types can be used to develop 'economic' pit designs with zones of variable recovery. Petrological studies of leaching results and examination of mineralisation types carried out on concentrates, provide information on gold distribution and physical and chemical constraints. The examination of concentrates can be particularly useful for types of mineralisation when overall gold content is frequently at or below one pan per million. Explanation of anomalous recovery of gold grains in dense goethite and solution-robbing by carbonaceous material can be identified by use of petrological and scanning electron microscope. An understanding of the role of the host rock in leaching characteristics can also he provided by petrology where siliceous or clayey materials can require significantly different treatment.

Mesothermal gold deposits of southern Alaska and Westland, New Zealand have both formed at the seaward edge of major collisional zones in the Pacific basin. In Alaska, production of large fluid volumes correlates in time with the addition of heat into the lower parts of the accreted terranes in the late stages of collisional orogeny. This heat was critical for driving both the metamorphic reactions that released the large volumes of fluid that carried the gold, and the contemporaneous widespread anatexis and magmatism. In Alaska's Chugach terrane, this heat was produced by subduction of a spreading ridge beneath the North America continental margin in the Eocene. The resulting products were the S-type granites and gold-bearing veins. The similar widespread S-type plutonism and gold veining in Westland's Buller terrane suggest that a similar tectonic event could have triggered ore formation along the southeastern edge of Gondwanaland. Based on the Alaskan model, a Devonian or Early Carboniferous age is favoured for high volume metamorphogenic fluid generation and gold vein formation in Westland.

In recent years, due to advances in designing of various magnet assemblies, a wide range of magnetic materials with different properties can be concentrated. Jalal Abad iron ore beneficiation plant, which is located in Iran, Kerman province, is currently producing iron ore concentrate with the capacity of 0.8 Mt/a by having medium intensity magnetic separators (MIMS) with rougher and cleaner stages that finally leads to the production of an iron concentrate with the Fe grade of about 65 per cent. In this plant, the rougher tailings directly goes to the thickener as the final tailings and cleaner tailings feeds to the ball mill for regrinding. Since some hematite particles with weak magnetic properties cannot be recovered from only these two stages of magnetic separation, the obtained tailings from this concentration plant has approximately an iron grade of 25 per cent to 27 per cent. Accordingly, laboratory processing tests were conducted on the obtained representative sample of the final tailings. Based on the experimental results performed on final tailings, a new magnetic drum separator with a specific magnetic assembly was designed that could finally lead to product with iron grade range of 58 per cent to 60 per cent with relative and total weight per cent of 8.6 per cent and 3.86 per cent. Finally, it could be concluded that feeding of magnetite particles to the existing drum separators, due to their high magnetic field intensity, cannot efficiently lead to improvement of the grade of concentrate. Therefore, pilot magnetic separation tests were done on the final concentrate for evaluation of product upgrading probability. Consequently, by increasing another stage of cleaning and by decreasing the magnetic field intensity, the final product grade could be enhanced from 65 per cent to 67 per cent.

Many thickener operations continue to be constrained by their ability to process consolidated underflows with high yield stress and associated rheological characteristics. To maximise separation efficiencies within a thickener operation the use of both engineering and reagents are always considered. BASF is developing a Novel Flocculant Technology (NFT), which combines both of these aspects to enhance the performance of the thickener operation, improving the areas of pumping efficiency, underflow density and throughput. The development progression through stages of laboratory scale batch test work to pilot scale dynamic testing has demonstrated the ability of BASF NFT to maintain effective flocculation performance whilst increasing the rate of underflow consolidation, and significantly reducing the associated underflow yield stress of the treated material. This paper will present application data through full scale dynamic testing conducted on a granite washing circuit to demonstrate the performance benefits that NFT offers to a thickener operation. Compared to the conventional flocculant treatment, within the operation parameters and conditions employed during the full scale trials, the NFT produced a reduction in underflow rheology (yield stress) of around 45 % relative to a given solids and improved the underflow consolidation by providing at least 20% relative higher underflow solids loading than the upper limit of the given typical thickener operation. "Copper anode slime is a precious secondary source for the recovery of silver. However, current recovery process are constrained by either sever pollution or high cost. To cover the drawbacks of current process, this research employed a novel strategy by using the manganese dioxide as the oxidant in acid solution, which avoided the generation of sulfur dioxide while high silver extraction rate was achieved. The effects of manganese dioxide, sulfur acid concentration, stirring speed, temperature and leaching time on silver extraction rate were investigated. The silver recovery reached to 91.68% under the conditions of 1.2 g manganese, 2.0 mol/L H2SO4, 300 rpm, 80 °C and 6 h. INTRODUCTION Copper anode slime is generated from the electrolysis refining of copper and is extremely precious for its containing noble metal such as silver (Chatterjee, 1996; Amer, 2003; Yldrm et al., 2014; Syed, 2016; Wang et al., 2017). Therefore it is of great significance to extract silver from anode slime for the full utilization of resource. Pyrometallurgy is the most mature process for the extraction of silver because of its stability and adaptability (Hait et al., 2009; Zhao et al., 2010; Gao et al., 2017). However, it also suffers the drawbacks of high operating cost, low extraction rate of silver and severe pollution of smoke dust (usually containing lead and arsenic) (Ludvigsson and Larsson, 2003). To cover the drawbacks of pyrometallurgy process, more and more attentions are giving to the semi-hydrometallurgy process which usually includes a pretreatment process of sulphatising roast or low temperature oxidizing roasting (Tishchenko, 1964). After pretreatment, the refractory silver bearing phases (silver selenide, silver sulfide and silver) are converted into readily leached forms which are often extracted by ammonia, sodium sulfite in alkaline solution (Valiuniene et al., 2010; Wojciech, and Kitka, 2017). Despite its relatively high extraction rate and low investment, it still has the disadvantages of releasing harmful gases since the sulfur dioxide are generally generated in the pretreatment process. In addition, the use of ammonia can easily lead to a leaking into the atmosphere once not carefully dealt with (Aylmore and Muir, 2001). As for silver recovery by sulfite leaching, the consumption of sodium sulfite is rather high which often results in a pipe blocked (Yang et al., 2006)."

Foram realizados testes completos de pelotamento para avaliar os efeitos da adição de uma solução de cal hidratada ao pellet feed na etapa de pelotamento. Foram preparadas soluções com diferentes concentrações de cal hidratada e após a mistura das mesmas no pellet feed foram realizados testes de pelotamento onde os principais parâmetros de qualidade das pelotas cruas geradas foram avaliados. O diâmetro médio final das pelotas foi o principal parâmetro influenciado pela adição de cal hidratada. A presença dos íons Ca2+ e CaOH+, em função da dosagem de cal, altera o estado de dispersão do minério de ferro, afetando assim o processo de formação das pelotas. Ainda, os cátions Ca2+ presentes no pellet feed interagem com o aglomerante orgânico e com a bentonita, reduzindo a capacidade desses agentes em controlar o crescimento das pelotas.

THE Kinta valley in the State of Perak, one of the largest of the Federated Malay States, is probably at the present time the richest alluvial tin-district in the world, Perak producing from 20,000 to 25,000 tons of tin annually, and the Kiuta valley being the chief producer. The valley runs approximately north and south, and is 30 miles long by 12 wide. It is very flat, the mountain-ranges on either side rising abruptly from the plain, that on the east being the great Central range of the peninsula, and that on the west a subsidiary range marked " Kledang " on the map, Fig. 1. The valley is drained by the Kinta river, which rises in the eastern mountain range and flows south to join the Perak river, being joined by numerous streams from both mountain-ranges. The rain-fall is heavy, averaging annually about 90 in. The whole country is covered with dense jungle, except where it has been cleared for mining-operations and a small amount of cultivation. Mining villages are scattered throughout the valley, the chief towns being Kampar, Batu Gajah, Lahat and Ipoh, the latter being the center of the mining-operations. An ideal section of the main geological features of the Kinta valley is given in Fig. 2. The valley is composed of a highly crystalline limestone, usually white in color, sometimes gray; in fact, it may be called marble. It is always highly inclined and often contorted, and in some places is interbedded with shale. On the east side of the valley, near its contact with the granite, it forms a remarkable series of limestone cliffs, which rise in some cases as high as 2,000 ft. above the level of the limestone in the valley. "NIOSH recently completed a 15-month study at an underground limestone mine crusher booth which evaluated three research parameters: (1) the effectiveness of a single-filter filtration and pressurization system for improving the air quality inside the operator booth, (2) comparing the effectiveness of ? > 99 and ? > 95 experimental prototype filters in the system, and (3) evaluating the use of three different pressure monitoring devices to determine the performance of the filtration and pressurization system over time. The protection factor was quantified monthly using particle counters in the respirable dust range (0.3–10 µm), and gravimetric dust samples were gathered at the beginning and end of the overall study. Under static conditions and after outlier removal, the single-filter filtration unit installed offered a protection factor between 8 and 216, depending on the filter type and loading condition. The particle counting analysis shows that the ? > 95 filter offers a protection factor greater than 4-times that of the ? > 99 filter when evaluated over 60 minutes. The booth pressure monitors provided data that proved to be a valid indicator of system performance over time. INTRODUCTION Designed and installed correctly, enclosed cabs, operator booths and control rooms offer mine workers protection from physical hazards, such as flying rock, debris, and noise, as well as a more comfortable environment in regards to temperature and humidity [1]. But while it may be easier to quantify whether the A/C unit is working (measuring the temperature) or observe whether the cab offers protection from flying debris, it can be somewhat more difficult to quantify its performance in reducing respirable dust hazards. For over 15 years, NIOSH has been conducting applied research to improve the air quality inside of enclosed cabs of mobile equipment [2-5]. This work has led to the identification and mathematical modeling of enclosed cab filtration systems [6]. The same principles that govern the performance of filtration systems on mobile equipment are applicable to stationary enclosures such as operator booths and control rooms [1, 7]. Stationary enclosures are similar to enclosed cabs; however, the volume of the work area can be significantly larger. In addition, workers who perform their duties in stationary enclosures tend to stay within the room for a greater percentage of the day, as opposed to workers on mobile equipment who may enter and exit frequently. Structural integrity can be easier to maintain as well, as there is typically less vibration and stress placed on these compartments as compared to mobile equipment. In addition to offering protection from dust and flying debris, enclosures must ensure that workers have a healthy supply of fresh air to avoid elevated levels of CO2, which are known to cause headache and dizziness, impairing cognitive function. The American Society of Heating, Refrigerating and Air-Conditioning Engineers (ASHRAE) states that enclosures should have no more than 1,100 ppm of CO2 when outside levels are 400 ppm [8]. In addition, the American Society of Agricultural and Biological Engineering (ASABE) recommends a minimum airflow for enclosed cabs of at least 42.5 m3/hr (25.0 cfm) per person [9] to ensure an acceptable level of CO2."

THE war, like all destructive agencies, has focused attention on salvage and conservation, and to such an extent that a decade of normal progress has been crowded into a few months. This is particularly true as regards the repair of cutting tools. As a consequence, there has arisen a wide demand for comparable data by those engaged in such work, and for basic information by others who wish to repair tools. These repairs may be grouped in three classes: (1) The repair of broken tools of relatively slender cross-section, such as broaches, reamers, drills, etc., of a type that could be returned to service if a means to join the broken surfaces were available, as fortunately it is in the low-temperature silver solder process; (2) the repair of tools that possess shanks, tangs, and other non-cutting portions that may be broken or damaged to the extent that only the addition of metal will permit their return to service; and (3) the repair of special rotating tools, such as end-mills and milling cutters, that may have portions broken from the cutting edges or have their edges so worn in service as to require building up.

Some important mineral fields are referred to in discussing the formation of placer deposits in Australia. Testing methods include boring hand, with percussion rigs; with auger and pit digging drills; and l by vibro drilling. Sampling errors are minimized by the use of correct techniques and equipment for boring, sampling, and sample dressing, A hypothetical set of data is used to demonstrate the final process of evaluation, and some relevant taxation provisions are discussed.

The Hermit Islands are situated at 145¦ E 1 30'S in the Bismarck Sea approximately 200km WNW of Manus Island. They are dominated by basalt flows, one of which yielded a K/Ar isotopic date of 3.4 + 0.05Ma. All basalts examined were olivine-bearing, but one sample also contained hornblende. Although many outcrops were weathered, no evidence of pervasive hydrothermal alteration was observed on any islands and non-weathered rocks are petrographically fresh and many retain glass.

BNINGESSNER et al.1 have shown that the solidification substructure in dilute cadmium alloys persisted after repeated deformation, recrystallization, and annealing treatments. On the basis of this and similar evidence, Whelan has suggested in a recent publication' that the solidification structure might affect the mobility of grain boundaries even after primary re-crystallization. This suggestion is important, since the technique used by previous investigators3-5 to fabricate grain growth specimens consisted only of casting, deforming, and recrystallizing prior to the grain growth anneal. Usually no attempt was made to homogenize samples with prolonged annealing. Experiments. To test the Whelan hypothesis, grain growth experiments were performed with samples in which the degree of solute segregation was altered by controlling the solidification rate of the alloys. The initial experiments were performed on the Pb-Ag system. Alloys containing 0.01 at. pct Ag were produced from 99.9999 pct Pb and 99.999 pct Ag. Cylindrical samples, 40 cm long and 12 mm in diam, were solidified in graphite-coated Vycor tubes by lowering them through a vertical furnace at varying rates with the furnace power settings constant. Six-centimeter sections were discarded from each end, and the 28-cm section from the center was cut into sections 25 mm long for grain growth experiments. These samples were deformed with the aid of a drophammer to a uniform thickness of 5.7 mm. After almost instantaneous recrystallization, the samples were given a grain growth anneal for various times at 260°C in a salt bath. Experimental results are shown

The Jewett Mine is located in two East Central Texas Counties, Leon County and Freestone County. The area is primarily suited for agriculture with approximately 90% of its agricultural income coming from beef cattle and hogs. In addition to livestock both of these counties produce hay, oats for grazing, pecans and corn. There are 1,101 farms and/or ranches in Freestone County consisting of 381,248 acres. Less than 15% of this acreage is harvested croplands. Leon County has 1,227 farms and/or ranches for a total of 442,387 acres, of which less than 13% is harvested cropland. Total annual agricultural sales for Leon County are approximately $36 million and Freestone County has approximately $21 million. Ninety percent of the annual agricultural sales derive from livestock.

O fluxo simétrico e distribuição de temperatura uniforme são de grande importância no processo de Lingotamento Contínuo de Beam Blank, porém a utilização de duas válvulas para alimentação do molde traz dificuldades operacionais relacionadas ao posicionamento das válvulas e controle de vazão. Neste sentido é interessante trabalhar com apenas uma válvula. Neste trabalho técnicas de modelagem física e matemática foram utilizadas para avaliar o fluxo de fluido no molde, comparando-se o caso em que se empregam duas válvulas tubulares, com aquele em que se utiliza apenas uma válvula. Verificou-se que esta última configuração resultou em uma mudança no comportamento do fluxo, aumento na profundidade de impacto, porém a velocidade na região do menisco não teve variação significativa em comparação com a utilização de duas válvulas tubulares.

Investing in a mining venture can be risky and stakeholders need transparent, unbiased reports to understand the Mineral Resources and Mineral Reserves a mining company holds. Readability and textual choice can be used consciously to manipulate perceptions, or it can be done unconsciously. This exploratory study investigates the readability and textual choice of supplementary Mineral Resources and Mineral Reserves Reports of companies listed on the Johannesburg Stock Exchange. The results indicate that narrative manipulation occurs in these reports through word choices that make the reports difficult to read, as well as specific narrative selections. This reduces the informational value of the reports. The results of the study will be useful to various stakeholders, such as mining company management, investors, investment specialists, financial analysts, and even employees and the general community, who all use these reports to make important decisions. It is also useful for the preparers of the Mineral Resources and Mineral Reserves Reports, Competent Persons, and other technical specialists to be aware of readability and that certain textual choices can affect the interpretation of these reports. It is recommended that bodies such as the JSE and the SAMREC and SAMVAL Code committees consider adding a plain language requirement to regulations, guidelines, and codes to ensure transparent, unbiased, and objective reports.

The Bureau of Mines conducted research to obtain comparative data on the extent of reduction of galena and sphalerite with molecular hydrogen and with hydrogen from the thermal cracking of ammonia and methane at various time intervals. Galena reductions of 95 to 99 percent were obtained with H2 and with decomposed NH3 while reductions of 70 to 80 percent were obtained with cracked CH4? Sphalerite reductions of 99 percent were obtained at 1,000° C with Hz and with decomposed NBs; however, complete volatilization of the free zinc from the remaining concentrate and the subsequent recombination of zinc and sulfur vapors resulted. A promoted iron catalyst brought about a decrease of 100° C in the temperature required for complete decomposition of ammonia. It was found that H2S retards NB3 decomposition and that nitrogen retards the reduction of galena by H2? A mixture of N2 and He in about the same ratio as that obtained by the thermal cracking of NBs gave about 15 percent less reduction of galena than was obtained with decomposed NB3; this indicates that a portion of the hydrogen obtained by NBs decomposition is in an active form.

"The most commonly used method of thick coal seam extraction in Polish deep mines is multislice longwall (MSL). In MSL stability of goaf in the roof as a result of previous extraction in upper slice is a major geotechnical consideration that must be managed.This paper outlines the results of a wide range of investigations carried out in three longwalls that were in operation in a multislice system using caving with additional fly ash goaf stowing. The longwalls were operated by Katowicki Holding Weglowy SA (KHWSA) in the Upper Silesian Coal Basin of Poland.Examinations were completed on the properties of goaf at the roof of longwalls ie measurements of strength parameters of the goaf material by means of a borehole hydraulic penetrometer, determination of the goaf condition by means of a borehole endoscope and laboratory testing of the caved rock. Uranium occurs in a variety of minerals, the more common primary ones of which are uraninite-pitchblende, coffinite and a group known as the complex multiple oxides. Identification and description of the uranium-bearing and associated minerals in ore samples may give a preliminary indication of the potential economic importance of the deposit and may also suggest initial approaches to metal extraction. The present paper reviews the common uranium minerals, describes their manner of occurrence and compares the types of deposits with which they are associated. Methods and techniques for their identification are described and their leaching characteristics discussed.
