Prior to 1950 Magma's ore production came from two parallel, steeply dipping, east-west striking mineralized faults, one called the Main or Magma vein and the other the Koerner vein, which lay about 1100 ft to the south. This vein system has been explored and mined over 9000 ft horizontally and 4800 ft vertically. In 1950 continued exploration led to the discovery and development of replacement orebodies in the Devonian limestone zones adjacent to the veins. These replacement deposits occur in the eastern part of the Magma mine and follow the strike and the 30º east dip of the host limestone. Strike length of the ore bodies varies from 250- 500 ft and thickness from 15-125 ft. The orebodies are large tabular masses with chalcopyrite and bornite being the dominant ore minerals. Hematite and pyrite are the most abundant gangue minerals. Incompetent limestone, shale, or a porphyry sill hanging wall is characteristic of portions of the replacement beds. In many instances the ore is blocky, badly fractured and intermixed with layers of limestone gouge, pyrite and hematite.

According to critical statistical studies, antimony is one of the rarest elements in the world, and global resources could be exhausted by 2050. In light of these observations, its extraction will be costly due to poor-quality ore, deep mining, remote locations, and high energy consumption. In the present study, an alkaline leaching process was carried out on stibnite concentrate to evaluate the effect of reaction parameters on the percentage of antimony extraction. The leaching efficiencies of different sulfur and hydroxide sources were studied and compared to one another to create a better understanding of the reaction process. Kinetic models were investigated to identify the reaction pathway and calculate the activation energy. The activation energy of the stibnite dissolution was assessed as 19.13 kJ/mol using a two-dimensional diffusion-reaction model. The value of activation energy indicates the quantity of energy necessary for a reaction to proceed. As expected, potassium hydroxide leaching was significantly more successful than was sodium hydroxide; however, in terms of economics, the use of sodium hydroxide was found to be more cost-efficient. Interestingly, this finding indicated that caustic leaching is still the most effective method for stibnite extraction.

The excavation process and equipment used for excavation join firmly each other. By changing the process or method, the construction of equipment may be altered essentially. It has been possible to develop a wholy new type of hydraulic boom for tunnelling, when only parallel drilling instead of V-cut is used. The utilization of controlled blasting has made small holes more desirable. So the controlled blasting has had an influence on the selection of drill steel equipment and in this way also influenced the construction of the equipment.

Vanadium, molybdenum, and a titanium-10 percent vanadium alloy were evaluated for their susceptibility to stress corrosion cracking in a number of corrodents. Tests were conducted utilizing conventional U-bend techniques with subsequent evaluation in a pneumatic constant-load apparatus. Vanadium and molybdenum were generally resistant to stress corrosion cracking in the media studied. U-bend specimens of vanadium showed evidence of stress corrosion cracking in 6 li hydrochloric and 18 li sulfuric acids; however, tensile stress specimens exposed to these solutions did not exhibit stress cracking. Similar results were obtained when U-bend specimens of molybdenum were immersed in 10 percent formic acid. Titanium-10 percent vanadium alloy was susceptible to stress corrosion cracking in 10-percent (2.85 li) hydrochloric acid solution. Heat treating the alloy greatly reduced its corrosion rate and its susceptibility to stress cor-rosion cracking in this medium.

The debismuthising plant, commissioned in 1980, is based on the Kroll-Betterton process for preliminary bismuth removal with subsequent antimony treatment for fine debismuthising. Bullion flowrate is continuous and the plant was designed to achieve low bismuth lead product at rates of up to 20 tonne/h.Development of the first stage of the operation has enabled reliable operations at 25 tonne/h to be achieved. Thesedevelopments also introduced the opportunity to treat higher bismuth bullion at up to 35 tonne/h when operating the first stage only to produce product lead of 0.029 per cent Bi, meeting the ASTM B29-55 Corroding Lead Standard.

Major exploration companies can have a problem with what to do with small precious metal ore bodies located through exploration programmes. Low tonnage, but high grade, ore bodies too small to justify in-house development.1.2 Ban Ban Mining is a Sunshine Coast based partnership with considerable expertise in mining and earthmoving which specializes in the mining of small/medium size ore bodies on behalf of the tenement holder on a profit sharing or royalty basis.1.3 The partnership's first successful venture has been the mining and vat leaching of a small 40,000 tonne ore body with a head grade of 5 gm/tonne gold and 32 gms/tonne silver, situated near Ban Ban Springs in southeast Queensland.1.4 This paper looks at the low cost vat leaching method of treatment, as an alternative to CIP and CIL in the processing of low tonnage/high grade precious metal ore bodies.

The main objectives of the Mine Mechanisation and Automation program (MMAP) are to enhance health and safety in underground mining operations, facilitate mechanization and automation in narrow- vein and deep mines, provide sound science to regulatory agencies and improve mine profitability. The program, which has a unique underground and surface industrial scale facility, is involved in many multi-partner projects, like hydrogen fuel cell applications, electrification and hydraulification of underground mines, reduction of noise and vibration, miner location device, explosive-free blasting and hoisting. The paper presents an overview of the Mine Mechanisation and Automation Program of Natural Resources Canada and some of the main projects.

However, the increased use of diesel equipment has exacerbated the pollutant load (including heat, humidity, exhaust gases and particulates) placed upon the environmental systems of many underground operations. This expansion in the use of diesel equipment has prom pted researchers to evaluate m easure ment and control technology. This paper reviews the recent research conducted in various countries.

Steel production process generates waste, among which is the electric arc furnace dust (EAFD). This waste has varying amounts of zinc, which is principally contained in the minerals zincite (ZnO) and franklinite (Fe2ZnO4). The presence of Zn is capable of economically motivating the recycling of this residue and facilitating the co-processing of the remaining material. The zinc content in EAFD and the presence of zincite, however, have significant influence on the application of hydrometallurgical recovery processes (economic alternatives to the Waelz process). In this study, based on the computational thermodynamic tool FactSage, theoretical considerations are made on the conditions for the formation of zinc-containing minerals found in EAFD. Through thermodynamic analysis, the best conditions for obtaining a high fraction of ZnO were analyzed, which favor the hydrometallurgical processes for EAFD treatment. A classification of dust depending on the phases present in the EAFD is suggested as a guide for the feasibility analysis for the use of a hydrometallurgical process.

The explosive-expansion center-hole anchor was designed and developed for the specific purpose of use as a component of an instrument system that measures differential ground movement within a small drill hole in rock. Such anchors should have an unobstructed center hole, should be installed without a twisting action which could tangle connecting wires, and should be capable of being installed at depths in excess of 100 feet. The anchor has a thick-walled center tube and a thin-walled outer tube. Low-energy detonating cord, wrapped around the center tube and detonated with a mild end primer, expands the outer tube to produce anchorage. The explosive-expansion center-hole anchor can be installed easily in drill holes of any inclination but cannot be installed under water. Centering of the anchor is critical with regard to its subsequent holding power. The anchor is safe to make and handle.

Introduction Classified equipment originally installed in 1923 in the Britannia mill consisted of eighteen Model C Dorr Simplex classifiers, each in closed circuit with a pebble-mill. These machines were only three feet wide and of light construction, so that their raking capacities were necessarily limited, the maximum being about 20 tons per hour for each classifier. On conversion from pebble-mills to ball-mills, in 1924, attempts to increase circulating loads with higher rake speeds resulted only in overflowing a coarser product to the flotation cells. The elevator type of classifier was developed locally in 1935 and during that year two units, each having a sand carrying capacity of from 30 to 40 tons per hour, were installed. With such loads, a material increase in the grinding capacities of the ball-mills was noticed, and, after further development work on the elevator classifier, fifteen of the small Dorr classifiers were replaced by units of this type, capable of handling approximately 75 tons of sand per hour, with later alterations increasing this capacity to well over 100 tons per hour. In the meantime, the three remaining ball-mills had been placed in circuit with Dorr FX classifiers, one of which was six feet wide and the others five feet wide. Impartial and exhaustive tests conducted on the Dorr FX versus the elevator classifier showed the average results on these machines at Britannia to be substantially the same. A large amount of testing was carried on to determine the effect of circulating load on the output of the grinding units. This work indicated a rapid increase in the grinding rate as the ball-mill feed increased up to about 60 tons per hour, after which a relatively slow increase took place up to 100 tons per hour. No benefits were derived from higher circulating loads. A 300 to 500 per cent circulating load, depending on the nature of the ore treated, is considered to be within the economical range for the grinding of Britannia ores.

[A great number of papers have been presented at various Engineering Society meetings on the Unit Train subject. Moat are descriptions of facilities that have been constructed or are abort to be built. Many describe the facility as being the World's fastest, newest, largest, incorporating the latest technology and so forth, Many are duplications of installations that have been recently constructed, sort of carbon copies but perhaps arranged differently. The trend has been to incorporate loop tracks, rotary dumpers, indexers and, of course, the snivel coupler equipped unit train. How that the energy crisis has increased the use of coal, there has been a tremendous Increase in applications for permits to construct rail to river coal loading facilities. This paper is different. It does not describe any single existing facility, but is given to alert prospective terminal owners and engineers that there are items that require considerable study and evaluation beside merely selecting an indexer, car dumper, stacker, ship or berg loader and so on. An important item is the selection of the railway car which in turn can affect the selection of the method of loading and unloading. Let us list a few of the items that should be considered and discuss the areas that require examination:]

The textures which are produced by simple shear in poly crystalline samples of copper, brass, aluminum, iron, and zirconium have been determined. For the fcc materials, there are two major textures, both of which are oriented for slip on the usual slip systems. It is shown that each grain will, in general, give rise to both orientations through the production of deformation bands. This is considered a clear demonstration that such bands aye produced by the heterogeneous deformation which takes place instead of the five-slip-system model considered by Taylor. The results on iron and zirconium are more limited but would appear to exhibit certain additional complexities. It is suspected, however, that the general consideration of deformation bands may apply here also. One finds some correlation between the textures produced by this single shear and the conventional textures although it would appear- that additional data and analysis are requived to produce a strong correlation. It is somewhat remarkable that of all the texture investigations only a very few have been concerned with the action of simple shear on polycrystalline aggregates. Of these limited investigations, all used torsional strains and only in Backofen's' and Backofen and Hundy's "ork was sampling carried out so as to derive a texture in terms of the shear direction. Some rather remarkable conclusions re- sulted from Backofens'1,2work: 1) the rate of texture formation in copper is high, being almost complete at a shear strain of unity; 2) the texture does not change if the sample is sheared back, although the surface grains return to their original shape; and 3) the texture is complex in that it has four components, three of which have [110] as a shear direction. These conclusions were based on both qualitative and quantitative data. Shear deformation is intermediate in complexity between simple shear of single crystals and the usual deformation of polycrystals; hence, one might expect to learn considerable from the extension of this work. CONVENTION Deformation in simple shear has the lowest possible symmetr3, less than the other simple modes of deformation (rolling, drawing, and compression); hence, one cannot necessarily expect the textures to have the same degree of symmetry. The geometry of the process is represented by Fig. 1 along with its sltereographic projection. One has the shear plane, the shear direction, the mirror plane normal to the shear plane and containing the shear direction, and a neutral plane normal to both the shear plane and mirror plane. These planes divide the projection into four quadrants. These quadrants are not, however, identical, since all directions within the upper left and lower right are being shortened by the shear process, and the other directions are being lengthened. The first kind are called compression quadrants and the direction of greatest contraction rate, at 45 deg, is labeled with a minus sign; the corresponding direction of greatest extension rate

The Y-Al- C ternary phase diagram for the com -position range from 55 to 100 at. pct Y and for a temperature of 950°C has been constructed from metallographic and X-ray diffraction data. The significant features of the isothermal section which is presented are the small solubility of aluminum in the binary Y3C phase and the presence of a ternary carbide phase with a small homogeneity range around the composition Y3AlC. The similarity in structure and composition between these two carbide phases is discussed in the light of the misci-bility gap which exists between room temperature and 1300°C, which was the temperature range studied. THE occurrence and stability criteria of ternary T3BC, carbide phases having the L'12 structure and the general formula T3BCx have been discussed in detail by stadelmaier1 and more recently by the present authors., Stadelmaier found many representatives of these phases formed between the T metals Mn, Fe, Co, and Ni and the B metals Mg, Al, Zn, Ca, Ge, Cd, In, Sn, Hg, T1, and Pb. The present authors reported on a new series of iso-structural carbide phases formed between the T metals of the Sc group and the B metal, aluminum. These new phases are unique in that many of the Sc group elements form stable binary carbide phases which occur about the composition T3C and which crystallize with a structure similar to that of the T9BCx ternary carbide phases. Furthermore, these binary and ternary phases are found to coexist in equilibrium with each other. The similarity in structure and composition between, for example, Y3C and Y3AlC in the light of the mis-cibility gap which had been found to exist between these two phases indicated a need for a more thorough knowledge of the phase relations which occur in alloys based upon these compositions. Consequently, an investigation of the phase equilibria in the yttrium-rich portion of the Y-A1-C phase diagram was undertaken. The limiting Y-A1 binary diagram determined by Lundin and Klodt3 and the results of Spedding et al.4 governing the Y3C phase were used as guides in , constructing the diagram. EXPERIMENTAL Alloys weighing about 10 g were prepared by arc-melting powder compacts made from the various components on a water-cooled copper hearth using a tungsten electrode in a gettered argon atmosphere. Good homogeneity was obtained by melting the alloys three times. The purity of the yttrium used was 99.9 pct (0.07 pct rare earths). The purity of the aluminum and the carbon was 99.99 pct. The results of chemical analysis on five representative alloys showed that losses during the alloying process were predominantly carbon losses and that in no instance did the measured concentration of this component differ by more than 3 at. pct from the intended composition. For this reason the alloy compositions which are reported are those of the charges prepared for melting. Three alloys which were analyzed for copper, tungsten, nitrogen, and oxygen compositions showed that no contamination had occurred either during casting or during the subsequent annealing treatments. ECONOMICAL handling of a minimum of 25,000 tons of minus 3/4-in. ore per day, grinding it to 2 per cent on 65 mesh, and effecting a high recovery of the copper at the lowest possible cost were the principal aims in the design of the new Morenci concentrating plant. Dealing with a tonnage of this magnitude, it is obvious that lost motion cannot be tolerated. When ore is carried on a conveyor an unnecessarily long distance or elevated to a greater height than necessary, or when pulp flows in a launder by a circuitous route thereby losing elevation and distance, we have lost motion which is always costly both from the standpoint of construction and operation. In addition to the 25,000 tons of ore which must be handled, 100,000 tons of water per day has to be carried through the plant in the treatment of the ore. Though water is not so difficult to handle as the ore, the combined tonnage represents a figure which could easily run into a considerable monetary loss per day if all phases of the design were not carefully followed with the idea of eliminating any unnessary handing of materials.

"As sulfide zinc ore deposits become exhausted, nonsulfide zinc ore deposits become the other resource for zinc production. However, flotation for zinc recovery from nonsulfide deposits is much more difficult than the flotation of sphalerite from sulfide deposits and may become an option for zinc production only if a suitable processing technology is developed. In this regard, research efforts are being devoted to the flotation of nonsulfide zinc oxide minerals. Some common methods which have been used for the flotation of zinc oxide minerals include sulfidization-flotation, activation, and direct flotation with anionic and cationic collectors. The traditional flotation techniques have low efficiency and difficulty in separation and recovery of the zinc minerals from gangue minerals, for example, smithsonite (ZnCO3) from other carbonate gangue minerals and hemimorphite (Zn4Si2O7 (OH)2·H2O) from silicate gangue minerals. In this study potassium lauryl phosphate was evaluated as a collector for the flotation of nonsulfide zinc minerals. Results from contact angle and microflotation experiments at pH 6–9 show that hemimorphite (Zn4Si2O7 (OH)2·H2O) can be floated from quartz and that smithsonite (ZnCO3) can be floated from calcite. However, when dodecylamine, which is a common collector reported in literature for the flotation of nonsulfide zinc minerals, was used as collector, no significant difference between nonsulfide zinc minerals and gangue minerals was observed at any pH value. Initial evaluation suggests that potassium lauryl phosphate is effective at low concentration and may be a promising collector for zinc oxide mineral flotation.INTRODUCTIONBefore the twentieth century, zinc was mainly produced from nonsulfide ores (Large, 2001; Gilg, Boni, & Cook, 2008). With the development of differential flotation processes in the late 19th century major production switched from nonsulfide zinc sources to sulfide zinc ores (Hitzman, Reynolds, Sangster, Allen, & Carman, 2003; Gilg et al., 2008). However, as it is becoming more difficult to find new sulfide ores, recovery from nonsulfide deposits is being considered. Nonsulfide flotation for zinc recovery is much more difficult than the flotation recovery of sphalerite from sulfide deposits and may become an option for zinc production if a suitable technology is developed. Zinc and lead oxide ores are difficult to beneficiate ores due to their similar floatability with gangue, high solubility in water, and the influence of slimes (Fa, Miller, Tao, & Li, 2005). In order to improve the performance of oxidized minerals, lots of effort is being devoted to this field of study (Ejtemaei & Mahdi, 2014)."

ALL live producers and manufacturers of metals and alloys are investigating new uses for their products. The tin and tin-plate industry is no exception. One-third of all the new tin mined and refined is consumed in making tin plate. Several billions of cans are each year made from tin plate for the preservation of nearly 200 kinds of food. There are more than 500 tin-plate mills or individual stacks in the United States, which country makes more tin plate than all other countries combined and exports large quantities. As much as 1,800,000 tons of till plate has been made in a year in this country, and 28.000 tons of tin has been used in this period for this purpose. In sonic years a third of the till is so consumed; in 1933 it was half of the supply.

In 1956 the Legislature of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania created a "Coal Research Board" in the Department of Mines and Mineral Industries. Over the years through amendments to the original legislation, the scope of authority for research has been expanded from the narrow area of improving and increasing the utilization of coal to covering all aspects of coal technology and any other area of interest which would be of value to the coal industry. In January of 1964, the Board commenced a vigorous program using appropriated funds and funds donated by the coal industry to finance a research program devoted to seeking solutions to the mine drainage problem. A review of published literature on the treatment of mine drainage indicated that much work done up to that point in time concerned only the mechanism of mine drainage formation and theoretical chemistry. Very few applied, developmental, or engineering studies had been devoted to finding practical solutions to the problem of polluted waters being discharged from active or abandoned mines. Projects were therefore undertaken on a wide variety of more utilitarian approaches. This paper will discuss briefly some of the pollution abatement approaches which have been funded by the Coal Research Board of this State, and will describe in some detail a multistage flash evaporator treatment plant now under construction.
