The coal industry in Alabama, centered in Birmingham, has pioneered coal-bene-ficiation practice in the United States. The nature of the coal seams and mining methods employed have necessitated use of equipment and methods best adapted to the local conditions. Although all of the 30 or more coal seams now being mined in the state receive beneficiation, only the three most important producers of coking coals, the Pratt, Mary Lee and Black Creek, are discussed in detail. Nature of the seams, washability characteristics and equipment used are given as examples of the extent of work and progress in this field. The coal seams in Alabama are relatively thin and pitching, making mining difficult and expensive. Most of them are characterized by thin partings of rock or shale in the seam itself, as well as laminations of bone and rash. Mechanical mining methods have increased the occlusions from roof and floor to such an extent that nearly all the coal mined in the state must receive some treatment before it can be put on the market. During the year ending Sept. 30, 1943,' 18,129,792 tons of coal were mined in the state and 14,364,177 tons, or 79.2 per cent, received treatment. Excluding from the total the 1,223,014 tons produced by small wagon mines and the hand-picked lump coal, the amount re- ceiving beneficiation would be more than 90.00 per cent. This is, by far, greater than in any other coal-producing state. The earliest record of coal beneficiation in Alabama was the installation in 1890 of an experimental Lurig washer by Alexander Cunningham, for the Sloss Iron and Steel Co. at its blast furnace in Birmingham.2 In 1894 the Jeffrey Manufacturing Co. introduced the English Robinson washer, a combination of a hydraulic classifier and centrifugal machine. Erskine Ramsay, who has contributed so much to the coal industry, saw its possibilities as well as its mechanical defects and soon had his inventive mind at work. He added a sludge tank of his own design, and many Robinson-Ramsay washers were installed in Alabama and other states. The Stewart jig appeared in 1900, followed by the Montgomery jig in 1910 and both have found extensive use. Increased interest in this field led to new designs, such as the American, Elmore, Burke and Faust. The first Baum-type Norton jig was operated in 1930 and within the last five years six large installations of this type have been made by the McNally-Pitts-burg, Jeffrey and Link-Belt Companies. Wet-washing tables were introduced in 1922 but not extensively used until recently. The two most popular types are the Deister-Overstrom and Deister Plat-O. The difficulty of finding new ore bodies, the complexities of patenting them when they are found, and the absence of incentive legislation for exploration have limited mining exploration in the United States mostly to the big companies. This situation, coupled with ECA spending abroad, has caused American capital to look outside our national boundaries for investment opportunities which are further made attractive by some relaxing of restrictions to gain American dollars and patronage.

The evaluation of earthquake-induced liquefaction has become a routine part of geotechnical engineering design. For a given project, if an analysis identifies a potential for liquefaction and the consequences of liquefaction are deemed unacceptable, then some form of hazard mitigation is required. Mitigation efforts may consist of removing the liquefiable soils, bypassing the liquefiable soils with deep foundations, structurally accommodating the deformations or strength loss caused by liquefaction, or preventing the onset of liquefaction through ground improvement. The fundamental ground improvement mechanisms for liquefaction mitigation include densification, drainage, and reinforcement. When evaluating, recommending and specifying various ground improvement methods for liquefaction mitigation, practitioners should understand the fundamental mechanics involved and applicability and limitations of the various methods. The DFI Ground Improvement Committee offers a review of the fundamental mechanics and commentary on the applicability and limitations of each method to provide clarity and guidance on the issues related to ground improvement for liquefaction mitigation.

The paper describes the results of a series of full-scale boiler tests run to determine the ash fouling characteristics of a North Dakota lignite as a function of sodium content of the coal. Four levels of sodium were investigated and rate of fouling was determined both by boiler performance and by specially constructed probe equipment. Discussed is information on chemical and physical properties of the ash deposits. The vast lignite deposits in North Dakota are becoming increasingly important as a source of low-cost fuel for power generation. A new 200-megawatt lignite-burning plant located near Stanton, N.D., was placed in operation early in 1966. Another 172-mega-watt unit in the same area is scheduled for operation late in 1966, and plans have recently been announced for a 212-megawatt unit to be in operation by 1970. If these plants show good performance, western North Dakota could become a major power production center for a large geographic area in the upper midwest. One of the problems associated with the use of lignite in power boilers is its tendency to form troublesome ash deposits on boiler tube surfaces. This problem varies considerably from one lignite-fired boiler to another and is dependent upon such factors as source of lignite, boiler design, load factor, tube metal temperatures, and soot-blowing practices. This report presents data on sodium content* variation in a North Dakota mine, describes the results of a series of tests performed to determine the relationship between ash fouling tendencies and the sodium content, and tells how the mining company and electric utility have coordinated their operations to reduce the ash fouling problem. GENERAL BACKGROUND Until recent years it was generally assumed that North Dakota lignite from a given mine had qualities peculiar to that mine, but that within the mine, the lignite was quite uniform. In 1959, the Otter Tail Power Co. installed a 53.5-megawatt lignite-burning unit at its Hoot Lake plant, Fergus Falls, Minn. Shortly after the unit was put into operation, it was noted that at certain times under high load conditions, ash fouling problems were quite severe, but not consistent or predictable. Each time fouling occurred in the unit the position of the loading shovel at the mine was noted. Within two years it became apparent that there were certain areas in the Knife River Coal Mining Co. mine at Beulah, N.D., where the lignite apparently had a high fouling tendency for the Hoot Lake unit. Results from analyses of the coal did not show large differences in moisture percentage, ash percentage, heating value, or ash fusion temperature between the highly troublesome and less troublesome coals. After three years of operation, the troublesome areas had been quite well defined and the mining company started a procedure of bypassing these areas when load conditions at the plant were high and then returning to the troublesome areas to load the lignite during the summer months when peak loads were lower. It was noted that the lignite from the areas which caused severe fouling under high load conditions produced much less fouling at the lower summer loads. However, bypassing certain areas in the strip pit caused the mining company to disrupt their continuous loading schedule, which in turn upset their continuous stripping schedule and made for less efficient mining operation. Meanwhile, at the Hoot Lake plant, the number of soot blowers on No. 2 boiler had been increased from 30 to 55, and a very rigorous blowing schedule had been adopted resulting in soot blowers operating at least some part of 21 hrs per day. Fouling problems continued, with a resulting reduction in plant economy and reliability. During this period the Federal Bureau of Mines Coal Research Laboratory at Grand Forks, N.D., had initiated various research programs relating to the study of lignite ash and ash fouling problems. Staged and continuous steelmaking are considered in the light of new technologies. The future opportunities for oxygen steelmaking processes are overviewed. IntroductionThe use of oxygen in steelmaking was originally brought on the scene by the development of pneumatic steelmaking. Sir Henry Bessemer in England originally conceptualized the use of gaseous oxygen in steelmaking, and then he and William Kelly in Eddyville, Kentucky independently developed the original pneumatic process which involved blowing air through a bath of molten pig iron to oxidize the carbon and silicon and produce steel. This process and many following processes, including those which would use pure oxygen gas, have been proposed.Beginning with the first commercial oxygen steelmaking vessels at Linz, Austria in 1952, the world steelmaking industry has adopted this style of processing. In general, the process has involved the use of steel scrap in amounts from 20 to 35% of the metallic charge with molten pig iron produced in blast furnaces making up the remainder. The impurities in the charge are oxidized through the use of oxygen gas injected into the steelmaking vessel.However, currently being adopted into commerical practice and on the horizon are a number of advances in this process which include the use of iron ores as a source of iron and oxygen, the use of an all scrap charge, incorporation of pre-reduced iron, the use of auxillary fuels to change the balance of cold and liquid iron-base charge materials and numerous refining techniques."

ADDRESSING the Ohio Section at a recent meeting in Columbus, Ohio, R. C. Allen, executive vice-president for Oglebay, Norton & Co., Cleveland, spoke on "The Iron-Ore Industry of the Lake Superior Region in Prosperity and Depression." The speaker considered this region in connection with the problem of national security. This is the age of minerals; progress depends on them; and next to agriculture, the mineral industry is of prime importance. The United States has no shortage of minerals rather an over-supply; but many mines have been and are being exhausted. The shifting of the sources of supplies of minerals so important as copper, petroleum, and iron to other countries would create internal strains and affect international relations. There will be no early decline of ore mining in the Lake Superior region unless it is forced by unwise public policies. Iron ore is industrial strength and self-sufficiency. A study of economic geography is important for statesmen and mining men, because the minerals essential for peace and war are haphazardly or irregularly distributed throughout the world. Of these minerals, 75 per cent are owned by 10 per cent of the population, mainly peoples of Anglo-Saxon origin.

The knowledge of 3D velocity distribution of P- and S-waves in rocks is very important parameter for interpretation and understanding the nature of seismic anisotropy observed in the earth’s crust and upper mantle. A new high-pressure measuring head was designed and constructed to enable ultrasonic sounding of spherical rock samples in 132 independent directions under up to 60 MPa of acting hydrostatic pressure by means of simultaneous longitudinal and transversal sounding. New measuring system enables ultrasonic sounding of spherical rock samples by using a pair of P-wave sensors and two pairs of perpendicularly polarized S-wave sensors (TV and TH) see Fig.1. Shear wave sensors polarization is oriented according to rotation axis of the sample. Special shear wave gel was used to transfer shear waves between the sample and sensors under acting hydrostatic pressure. An isotropic glass sphere was used to check and calibrate the new measuring setup. A spherical sample of a biotite gneiss from the Outokumpu scientific drill hole was used for testing measurement. There is shown that both, P- and S-wave velocities, can be measured simultaneously up to 70 MPa, respectively. We report data of the 3D velocity distribution of P- and Swaves measured for the first time on a sample sphere of biotite gneiss. We rely, in particular, on the directional dependence of compressional and shear wave propagation and their relationship to the crystallographic (CPO) and shape preferred orientation (SPO) of major rock-forming minerals. The 3D seismic measurements revealed a strong foliation-related directional dependence (anisotropy) of P- and Swave velocities. Ultrasonic measurements were compared with 3D velocity calculations based on neutron diffraction measurements of crystallographic preferred orientation (CPO) of major minerals. Comparison of 3-D velocity distribution (P, S1, S2 and S1-S2) determined by two completely different methods ultrasonic sounding and neutron diffraction is presented. Measurements showed that the intrinsic bulk anisotropy is basically caused by the CPO of biotite constituting about 23 vol.% of the rock.

This is the first of two papers concerned with rock stress inputs to various mine design issues at the large Ok Tedi open pit mine in Papua New Guinea. The companion paper (also published at this conference) is ‘The Application of Rock Stress Inputs to Stability Assessments at Ok Tedi Mine, Papua New Guinea’ (de Bruyn et al, 2014).Stresses are a required input for numerical modelling of mine design issues. However, for some operations, like the very large Ok Tedi open pit mine in remote rugged mountainous terrain, direct and representative measurement of rock stresses can be technically difficult and expensive. In such situations, development of an appropriate and sufficient understanding of rock stresses can be challenging.This was addressed for Ok Tedi by considering the following:The tectonic and regional geologic setting of the mine.Results from three different programs of rock stress measurement over 19 years, including hydraulic fracturing (1991), acoustic emission (2007) and overcoring (2010). Some interesting results of the overcoring work are discussed. It was done in a 4 km long drainage tunnel, which intersected a thick monzodiorite intrusive that has metamorphosed contacts to host contact Ieru Formation siltstones; anomalously low horizontal stresses were measured within the monzodiorite.Compilation of rock stress measurements from other New Guinea mines and prospects, both in Papua New Guinea and Indonesian West Papua.Comparisons between the variable Ok Tedi rock stresses and similar data from other porphyry copper deposits.CITATION:Lee, M F, Baczynski, N R P, Mills, K W, de Bruyn, I A and Mollison, L, 2014. En ese sentido, el presente texto señala el diseño de explotación a cielo abierto, -en tanto los cálculos mostraron que la mayor parte de las reservas pueden beneficiarse por medio de este tipo de explotación. Asimismo, sus límites se determinaron por el factor límite de estériles. Para averiguar la firmeza de los taludes de la explotación a cielo abierto, una agencia competente hizo pruebas con muestras de la roca y del mineral, así como para verificar el ángulo de inclinación más apropiado de los taludes.

Newmont Akyem mine in Ghana is committed with continuous improving results. A new environment where the price varies rapidly requires of better understanding of the deposits and the gold contained in the ore. This better understanding allows the mine planners to quick adjust and fast response to economic changes for gold price. Newmont Akyem Mine has approximately 9.4 million tons of ore in the stockpiles. Mine planers are still using average grade in all stockpiles to do a mine plan. The re-handled material is blended with the prime material coming from the mine.

Situations where in-pit bench stripping methods are favourable are introduced. Examples from Peak Downs Mine are used as a guide to the range of methods available.A number of geological and geotechnical conditions adverse to successful in-pit bench stripping are described. In all cases bench, floor, and/or final lowwall instability can develop and compromise the economics of extraction.

Conventionally, a combined system consist- ing of a dry or wet pulverizer and kneading mac- hine is applied to the pretreatment of fine mat- erials for agglomeration, especially for pellet- izing. However, treatment cannot be expected to be satisfactory owing to the complexities of the process. A new process was developed to over- come the defects inherent in the conventional process. This new process treats certain fine materials having a moisture content somewhat lower than that suitable for pelletizing in a ball or rod mill. The mill is of special de- sign in which grinding and strong kneading are performed to give an extremely homogeneous ball- ing material with appropriate size distribution and pelletizing characteristics. The most serious problem in this process is the choking of sticky materials in the mill. A specially designed rubber lining was installed in the mill to overcome this trouble. This paper presents actual results from our iron ore pelletizing plant relating to the pelletization of other fine materials.

FROM earliest recorded times, limestone has been employed in the industrial life of peoples of all sections of the world where it exists. It is widely distributed and therefore has been available in almost every country and has been employed for a variety of purposes. Its earliest use was for buildings, since it is more easily quarried and dressed than most other kinds of rocks and so could be utilized by early inhabitants, poorly equipped with tools. The next use was in the manufacture of lime, which was employed by the ancients in mortar. These two uses of limestone are still all important, but they have been overshadowed in scores of regions by literally hundreds of new applications for raw lime-stone or products made from it. Anyone familiar with modern manufacturing processes can quickly call to mind many industries in which limestones are essential, and new uses are continually coming to notice. Any enumeration would probably be incomplete and soon out of date.

High pressure abrasive water jets have been shown capable of cutting a wide range of materials including steel, stone, rock and concrete. Acceptable performance can be achieved using relatively low pressures and expendable abrasives. The cutting head can be made small and abrasive feed systems have been developed that allow reliable pumping of slurries over long distances to supply such cutting heads. These features make abrasive water jets ideally suited to automated control in remote areas.Another major advantage of abrasive entraining water jet cutting heads is that they may be operated safely in potentially explosive environments due to their cold cutting ability. Therefore there are many possible applications for such equipment in mining.This paper gives an introduction to the abrasive water jet process and includes results of trials carried out at BHRA on a range of hard materials. Work is also described which investigated the operational safety of abrasive water jets in explosive environ-ments. In a special environmental chamber, cuts were made on steel and sandstone with atmospheres of methane/air and hydrogen/air, without caypsing ignition.

REFRACTORY clay, one of Pennsylvania's important nonmetallic mineral resources, occurs at several horizons in beds of Pennsylvanian age. The Mercer fireclay, of Pottsville age (Table 1), is the most important of these clays. A study of this fireclay has been conducted by the Pennsylvania Geologic Survey discontinuously over a period of seven years. The work has included field mapping of a rather large area, as well as petrographic, differen¬tial thermal, and X-ray studies of the fireclay. A comprehensive report on the project is now in preparation.

El presente trabajo describe la geoquímica y microtermometría de las inclusiones fluídas (IF) de la Mina Chonta, Veta Rublo (VR), ubicada en Huancavelica, Perú, con el objetivo de determinar qué tipos de fluidos se presentan en el yacimiento y, si existieran dos o más, establecer cuál de ellos es el relacionado con la mineralización. En ese sentido, la veta Rublo, está emplazada en rocas volcánicas cenozoicas de la formación “Domos de Lava”, de 8 a 10 ma. de edad (Noble, 1973); su rumbo promedio es N 58º-80ºE y buzamiento 60º-70º SE. Los minerales presentes son: esfalerita, galena, cuarzo, marcasita, pirita, tetraedrita tennantita, calcopirita, guettardita, veenita y bournonita. Estos minerales ocurren en texturas de relleno hidrotermal (crustiforme, brechoide, reemplazamiento y relleno de fracturas) y las alteraciones hidrotermales observadas son: argilización, silicificación y sericitización. Con respecto al origen de los fluídos, existe una mayor salinidad donde la temperatura de ebullición se eleva y con respecto a la salinidad baja, no se indica zonas superficiales con temperaturas bajas ni aguas salobres de origen meteórico.

This study proposes a new approach to reduce the environmental impact during surface mining by improving environmental factors through the incorporation of carbon footprint into strategic mine planning. Two key variables were analysed by contrasting and comparing the baseline and optimised models generated. These variables include net present value, which helps determine the financial feasibility of the mining models and their carbon emissions. The variables were analysed by using linear regression, Spearman’s correlation, a P-value hypothesis, and an exponential decay test. Results show that at Mine A the projected net present value was 62% higher than when running a baseline model. Furthermore, the net present value from the baseline model portrayed a high rate of decay at 0.667 versus 0.118 from the optimised model. This indicates the baseline model’s sensitivity to long-term project timelines and fluctuating markets. The optimised method presents an opportunity to manage emissions during the high operational costs phases. It is represented by a 31% improvement in carbon emissions during the periods of high operational costs, whilst maintaining a positive net present value when compared with the baseline model. It was shown that the optimised model presents a better chance of achieving financial feasibility and balancing environmental impact, thereby ensuring that Mine A can align with the environmental aspect of economic, social, and governance principles through lowering the carbon footprint resulting from its hauling operations.

"The Port Radium mine of Eldorado Mining and Refining Limited lies on the western tip of a large peninsula midway up the east shore of McTavish Arm, Great Bear Lake, about 30 miles south of the Arctic Circle. The mine is serviced by air, 950 miles from Edmonton, and by water, 1,380 miles from Waterways, Alberta.The veins were found, and the copper and cobalt minerals in them reported, by J. MacJntosh Bell of the Geological Survey of Canada in 1899. The veins were investigated by Gilbert Labine and E. C. St. Paul in 1930, and as a result of their work the Eldorado mine was brought into production in 1934. It produced silver and radium ores until 1940, at which time, as the silver orebodies had been mined out and the market for radium was negligible, it closed down. Early in World War II the need for uranium for the Manhattan Project was emphasized, and the mine was reopened in 1942. As a security measure Eldorado Mining and Refining was created a Crown company in 1944. The Port Radium mine has continued to be one of Canada's principal producers of pitchblende concentrates, and to date has about 25 miles of underground workings developed on fourteen levels.Regional GeologyThe general geology of the McTavish Arm area was mapped by D. F. Kidd in 1932 on a scale of one inch to four miles. A great deal of more detailed work has since been done by geologists of the Geological Survey and of Eldorado. The entire area at the end of McTavish Arm lies within the Precambrian Shield immediately east of its western margin. Most of the area is underlain by granitic masses which have intruded a sequence of late Precambrian sediments, volcanics, and hypabyssal intrusives. The pre-granite rocks now occur in extensive, irregular patches and pendants within the granite. Pitchblende deposits have been found in the district in all rock types, but the most favourable host rocks are the cherty sediments of the lower Echo Bay group."
