Casting is the most economical route to transfer raw materials into readily usable components. The economics of casting would be more pronounced and better realized, if there are no or limited necessary post fabrication treatments. Therefore, there is an urge towards near or net-shaped casting as there are significant advantages over conventional casting including reduction of component weight, excellent surface finish, higher strength and integrity of the as-cast parts, closer tolerance, and the ability to produce pore-free parts by controlling the solidification shrinkage. The concept of near or net-shaped casting is currently employed for both semi-finished products such as strip-casting and finished shaped casting, as in case of high pressure die casting or squeeze casting. The full potential of this process yet to be explored and is expected to be realized within the next 10 years, especially in case of strip casting. The current article discusses different near or net-shaped casting routes currently employed for fabrication of high integrity finished products with main emphasis on aluminum-silicon alloys. In this regard, attempts will be made to identify the key parameters during fabrication and highlight the importance of process control and optimization in fabricating premium quality cast products. Researchers at the U.S. Bureau of Mines collected and analyzed overcore measurements and other indicators of in situ stress characteristics at the Lucky Friday Mine, Mullan, ID. An analysis of these data revealed that significant local variations in in situ stress are present in this mine and that these variations existed prior to mining. High stresses were found to be associated with the most competent strata and a locked section of a fault. An estimate of the predominant stress field was developed for mine-wide modeling. The estimate shows that the greatest principal stress was oriented north of northwest. This information should provide a basis for mine-wide structural modeling of the Lucky Friday Mine and should generate important insights into localized stress conditions, which may significantly affect both local and mine-to-mine variations in seismicity induced by excavation.

"The Agnew nickel deposit occurs in a major linear greenstone belt in the Archaean Eastern Goldfields Province of Western Australia, and has been subjected to mid-amphibolite facies nietamorphism of dynamic style. The largest dunitic ultramafic body in the Perseverance Block is host to the bulk of the nickel mineralization. The Perseverance Ultramafic is mineralogically zoned and has an embayed western margin against a mixed metasedimentarv-metavolcanic wallrock sequence.Three categories of nickel sulphide mineralization are concentrated on this western margin at the thickest part of the ultramafic exposure. Massive sulphides characteristically occur as contact mineralization, internal mineralization and as remobilized concentrations in vein form structures. Disseminated ore constitutes the largest volume of mineralized materials in the deposit and occurs in three separate shoots in en-echelon relation. Weakly mineralized 'cloud sulphide' zones surround and envelop the shoots and persist much further along strike. In the upper mine levels the shoots are truncated by a shear or crush zone, which inhibits geological knowledge to the south but marks a major fundamental structural break.Most of the ore types have suffered supergene alteration and there is a complex variable distribution of the mineralogical facies. The ore types have been metamorphically retextured, but the oreshoots can be characterized by their Ni tenor and some chemical ratios. S/Se values, PGF. and precious metal values are distinctly different from those of other nickel sulphide ores extracted.Despite intense structural and metamorphic modification of the mineralizations, some features support an original magmatic derivation for the sulphides. These include the localization of massive sulphide ore types on one marginal contact within an emhayment structure, the general distribution of disseminated mineralizations located immediately above the massive sulphides and the Ni/Cu, Ni/Co, Fe/Ni ratios of the oreshoots being similar to those of deposits that typify the intrusive dunite- associated class of nickel sulphide deposit. Varying S/Ni ratios between different shoots suggest a revision of the single magmatic intrusion model in favour of a changing composition between successive magmatic episodes."

The U.S. Bureau of Mines, in cooperation with the Homestake Mining Co., and the University of Utah, is conducting a field demonstration to evaluate the behavior of rock masses supported with cable bolts. One of two rock masses being studied is supported with both conventional and birdcage cables. This rock mass is located between the 6500 and 6650 levels of the 45-4BN stope. 21 ledge. The second rock mass is the hanging wall of the D-limb stope between the 3500 and 3650 levels near the Ross Shaft and is supported with conventional cables. The primary objectives of the project are to monitor the behavior of the two rock masses during mining using extensometers and cable support strain gauges, after which the rock will be modeled using the finite-element code UTAH III. Field data will be used to verify the modeling. In addition. a comparison between the effectiveness of conventional and birdcage cables will be made.

The Moab Khotsong Metallurgical Complex comprises a gold recovery circuit (Noligwa Gold Plant) and a uranium recovery circuit (South Uranium Plant). The metallurgical complex employs the reverse leach technology for the recovery of uranium; specifically, uranium extraction prior to gold using acid leaching processing. The inherent uranium species in the ore are uraninite, coffinite and brannerite. The slurry that has been subjected to the uranium leach is further subjected to solid-liquid separation to separate the uranium in a solution through counter-current decantation and the solids (solids carrying all the gold), which are repulped and returned to the gold plant for gold processing. The uranium leaching process is critical to the uranium playing a pivotal role as a value adding by-product to the gold operation. The benefit of adopting this reverse leach process, for improved gold recovery, is that it exposes gold particles occluded within the uranium matrices and avails them for cyanidation. However, the drive for operational efficiency in uranium extraction must be weighed against the incremental operating cost against the backdrop of depressed spot uranium market prices. Over the years, efforts were directed at maintaining the benefit of extracting uranium to enhance gold recovery and simultaneously, optimising the operating cost model for the uranium operation to remain relevant to the gold operation. The aim of this paper and the corresponding presentation is to give an account of the uranium processing optimisation journey embarked on over the years; namely, the operational tradeoffs made in the process of ensuring that uranium continues to add value to the gold operation. These challenges were faced while striking a fine balance between processing cost and operational efficiencies against the prevailing depressed uranium spot market prices. Mineralogical- and laboratory tests conducted form the support basis for the results and observations articulated in the paper. BY the term making an "electrical log" the authors designate an operation conceived for the purpose of determining electrically the characters of formations traversed in drilling, the determination being carried out by means of measuring the electrical resistivities of the rocks along the uncased portions of drill-holes. As in the case of an ordinary core record, this process connotes a geological studs of the strata, and for that reason it is given a similar designation. The paper is divided into three parts, of which the first deals with the resistivities of rocks in general, since it is through this electrical parameter that they are to be characterized. The second deals with the technique, and the third with the description of practical applications of the electrical logs.

The recent surge in demand for uranium in the United States, accompanied by a significant increase in price, has resulted in exploration, mining, and milling of lower grade ores than have been exploited in the past. To sustain production levels of uranium with lower grades of feed requires larger tonnage mill operations. Also, because of recent environmental regulations, mill operations must be prepared to properly contain large tonnages of tailings, and recycle, treat and discharge, or evaporate mill effluents. Thus, the advent of lower grade ores, larger tonnage mills, and environmental considerations has made the cost of milling a critical factor in today's uranium production economics in the United States. Three basic milling methods are employed for extracting uranium from ores: 1. Acid leach, countercurrent decantation, and solvent extraction. 2. Acid leach, resin-in-pulp, and Eluex. 3. Alkaline leach, solid-liquor separation, and precipitation. Vanadium often occurs as a valuable by-product in ore deposits located in the Uravan mineral belt in Western Colorado. Also, lesser amounts of vanadium may occur in ores from South Dakota, New Mexico, and Utah. Vanadium is usually extracted in the acid leach solution with uranium and recovered by solvent extraction after recovery of the uranium. By-product recovery of uranium from phosphoric acid and porphyry copper dump leach solutions is now receiving considerable attention. Pilot plant studies are under way and construction of commercial plants is in progress.

The Dwight-Lloyd sintering machine was the answer to the flue-dust problem of the copper blast-furnace smelter. Then came concentration by flotation, which threatened to eliminate the blast furnace from the smelting field altogether, and again the sintering process solved the problem. As is well known, the sintering process is dual in its function; it expels sulphur from the charge and it converts a powdery material into nodules or chunks that hold together. The charge is ignited on top just as it passes over the edge of the first suction box, and the oxygen of the air that is drawn downward through the charge breaks up the sulphide and oxidizes about fifty percent of the sulphur. The heat produced by this reaction in the upper stratum of the charge ignites that lying immediately below, and, when the pallett has travelled the full length of the machine, the tire has reached the graces and the fine concentrate has changed its characteristics by being partially fused and has become a more or less solid mass. When the Granby Company was smelting its ore as mined, one small D-L machine was adequate for the treatment of the flue dust, but as soon as the policy of smelting the concentrate was adopted, it became necessary to add two large machines to the sintering plant. The three sintering units, of which two are 42 in. by 396 in. and the other 42 in . by 264 in. in hearth area, have a combined capacity of from 370 to 450 tons (dry) of charge per day. The capacity varies directly as the hearth area. The sinter produced is about 88 per cent of the dry charge, or 325 to 400 tons per day. The sintered fines returned for resintering average between 30 and 35 per cent of the charge, but this is not as great a disadvantage as might appear, since the addition of hot fines improves the burning qualities of the mixture. From 50 to 54 per cent of the sulphur is eliminated in the sintering operation.

In this study, a MSWI bottom ash sample was assessed to evaluate the feasibility of various physical beneficiation processes in concentrating valuable elements prior to chemical leaching. The raw sample was initially assayed to determine the content and economic value of various metals present in the material. The potential recoverable value (PRV) of the sample was calculated, and the result showed that the total PRV of the sample was 483 $/ton, with Ti, Sc, Fe, Cu, and Zn being the most valuable metals. Next, various physical separation processes, including size fractionation, froth flotation, magnetic separation, and gravity separation, were conducted to determine the extent to which the valuable elements can be concentrated. The results were compiled into an element-by-beneficiation enrichment ratio (er) matrix that was used to develop suitable beneficiation flowsheets for further consideration. The result clearly show delineation of four products, including a Fe-rich product that can be isolated by magnetic separation (er = 5.0), a Cu/Zn-rich product that can be isolated by flotation (er = 5.3 to 9.4), a Sc-rich product that can be isolated by gravity separation (er = 0.6), and a Ti–rich product that is produced in the residue. Lastly, the leachability of valuable elements from the bottom ash sample was determined by acid leaching tests. The results indicated that it is viable to employ hydrometallurgical methods to recover and purify the valuable metals. This work provides a reference for the recovery of valuable metals from MSWI bottom ash from both the technical and economic aspects.

FEW men reach middle life without having had the experience of failure in one or more undertakings; and most of us can look back with gratitude to help or advice given us by friends at critical periods of our lives. If, as men, we ask and take the benefit of such aid, why should we expect our sons to be stronger? A parent can make no greater mistake than to send a boy, however steady and intelligent he may be, off' to school or college, and expect the boy always to cope successfully with all the new conditions and new difficulties that may confront him. This is undoubtedly more the case with a freshman, in his first year at college, than in later years, or than it is with a boy at day- or boarding-school, where the boy receives a greater degree of care and oversight than can be given to the young man entering college; of all periods in life, the youth in his freshman year-fresh from the overshadowing care of home and school-may need judicious advice and timely aid. The change from the restraint of home and school to the freedom of college life is sudden and marked, and it is in this the first year of the boy or young man of 17, 18, or 19 years of age, that some tactful, judicious aid should be near him in his work and course. Some boys go to college so well prepared that they become careless and finally fall behind in their work from over-confidence. Others meet trouble from ambitiously trying to do more than their previous preparation, or physical or mental strength, can sustain. Others fall behind from illness-from injuries-from natural inability to grasp at first, without more aid than comes to them in the regular course of instruction, the higher mathematics-or mayhap the modern languages, or other subjects presented by the advanced curriculum of the present day. Radiometric surveys of the beach and nearshore zone of the Dutch Frisian Islands have identified sands enriched in heavy minerals. The areas of heavy mineral concentration have been mapped in detail using a state of the art towed gamma-ray detector, which gives improved sensitivity through the use of new detector materials and improved data processing techniques. The detector provides continuous measurement of sea floor radioactivity (and of a number of other parameters) and can be used simultaneously with other survey techniques, such as echo sounding, sidescan sonar and shallow seismic profiling. It enables a rapid, and cost effective, assessment of the surface distribution of heavy minerals to be made. The heavy mineral suite includes magnetite, ilmenite, garnet, rutile and zircon. These minerals contain 1-3 orders of magnitude more U and Th, in terms of their activity concentrations, than the accompanying light minerals (mainly quartz). Since the heavy mineral composition of the sands appears to be relatively constant along the Dutch Frisian Island chain, the U and Th concentrations can be used to provide a quick estimate of the heavy mineral content. The sea floor radiometric measurements allow sediment sampling for more detailed analysis to be highly targetted. The zones of heavy mineral enrichment are generally sub-parallel to the coast and are usually confined to water depths of 5-10 m. There is a close correlation with sand bars on the shoreface, the highest radioactivity typically occurring just seaward of the crest of these features. As well as being used for heavy mineral exploration, similar radiometric methods can be applied to mineral processing. Gamma-ray detection systems can be used to provide rapid analysis in the process stream enabling on-line grade control and optimisation of processing, from excavation of mineral sands to the final products.

Abstract This paper is an account of an investigation made by the Dominion Observatory with a gravity meter and magnetometer over sulphide concentrations at East Sullivan, Val d'Or, Que., in June, 1947. The topographic relief over the area does not exceed 20 feet. The overburden varies from 0 co 50 feet. The west orebody had been outlined by extensive drilling. The average density contrast between the sulphide body and surrounding rocks is 0.5. Two hundred and sixty gravity and one hundred and ninety magnetic stations were observed. The results are shown on contour sketches. A derailed account is given of the methods employed to reduce the gravity observations. The survey shows that both gravimetric and magnetic methods are useful in delineating sulphide deposits under the conditions in which they occur at East Sullivan. The results indicate that the buried contact of the syenite intrusive southeast of the orebody could be traced with the gravimeter and chat the magnetometer was of little value for that purpose. Gravity anomalies due to the varying depths of overburden are negligible as compared to the magnitude of the total anomalies. Introduction The project was first suggested at a meeting of the Associate Committee on Geophysics of the National Research Council in September, 1946. At that time it was pointed out that the accuracy and speed of operation of the new gravity meters made them of special importance for geophysical prospecting and it was highly desirable to have an objective test of the performance of an instrument of this kind in delineating an orebody of known dimensions and density characteristics. Several years ago, a private company did some work with a gravimeter over the Amulet deposits, near Noranda. Unfortunately, the topography there is rather rugged, with hills and ravines exceeding 100 feet, so that the topographical effects rendered it impracticable to distinguish between anomalies due to the sulphides and those due to surface irregularities. An orebody of a typical nature, where the disturbing topographical corrections were not excessive, was therefore sought.

The selectivity in flotation columns involving the separation of particles of varying degrees of floatability is based on differential flotation rates in the collection zone, reflux action between the froth and collection zones, and differential detachment rates in the froth zone. Using well known theoretical models describing the separation process and experimental data, froth zone and overall flotation recovery values were quantified for particles in an anthracite coal that have a wide range of floatability potential. For highly floatable particles, froth recovery had a very minimal impact on overall recovery while the recovery of weakly floatable material was decreased substantially by reductions in froth recovery values. In addition, under carrying-capacity limiting conditions, selectivity was enhanced by the preferential detachment of the weakly floatable material. Based on this concept, highly floatable material was added directly into the froth zone when treating the anthracite coal. The enriched froth phase reduced the product ash content of the anthracite product by five absolute percentage points while maintaining a constant recovery value.

An interesting program of technical sessions and excursions is now being prepared by the Local Committee. At the time of going to press the program had not been completed in sufficient detail to permit its being pub¬lished in this number. The detailed program will be published in the September MINING AND METALLURGY, which will be printed in time to be distributed before the Wilkes-Barre Meeting. It may be said in advance, however, that the Com¬mittee has progressed so far in its work that we are assured of one of the -most notable meetings the Insti¬tute has held and that members will miss a rare .treat if they do not attend. The many trips and excursions, as well as the banquet, will be -given to the members as a compliment from the members of the Local Com¬mittee. . . The paper by Howard Eavenson on the Lynch Plant of -the United States Coal and Coke Co. will be illustrated by lantern slides and moving pictures. One of the most appropriate discussions will be that opened by Prof. J. F. Kemp on the Stratigraphy of the Anthracite Region; this also will be amply illustrated.

Ligas amorfas e nanocristalinas à base de ferro apresentam propriedades excepcionais, como alta dureza e resistência ao desgaste com taxa de resfriamento entre 103 e 105 K/s. Assim, este trabalho objetiva a solidificação rápida (SR) da liga à base de ferro fundido (FoFo) com adições de Boro e Nióbio, resultando na composição química (Fe65Cr17Mo2C14Si2)88B8Nb4 (%at.). A liga foi processada através de melt-spinning, no forno Discovery® Plasma e Conformação por Spray (CS) e caracterizada por: DSC, DRX, MEV e microdureza Vickers. Foram obtidos: fitas amorfas (40 µm) através de melt-spinning, chapas (1,0 e 2,0 mm) por (SR) e CS da liga (Fe65Cr17Mo2C14Si2)88B8Nb4, com depósito (1,0 e 2,0 mm) e pós overspray (20 até 180 µm). A caracterização mostrou fitas amorfas, pós overspray nanocristalinos e chapas (SR) e depósito (CS) cristalinos com as fases: Fe-a, Fe-?, Cr7C3, FeNbB e Fe2B, com respectivas microdureza Vickers de 1044 ± 102 (HV1) para o depósito CS e 1480 HV para a chapa de 2,0 mm, mostrando alta dureza.

A REVIEW of the progress in applied geophysics during the recent depression years reveals marked advances "over the methods employed several years ago. Of late, geophysical work has been curtailed to a con-siderable extent in the fields of oil and base-metal exploration, its especial domains a few years ago. Greater attention has been directed toward the use of geophysical technique in other engineering problems. Constantly maintained research programs have developed new instruments and per-fected better field, laboratory and interpretation techniques based on experience and skill acquired from years of application in the older geophysical field. During the past two years, geophysical methods have been employed in problems that required information on thickness of fill materials and subsurface bedrock contours. Considerable success has been attained, with subsequent drilling checking the predicted depths within one to five per cent. In general, these problems were similar as far as the fundamen-tal physical and geological conditions were concerned, but they have varied widely in specific detail and in engineering aspects. Character-istic of the different problems are: (1) yardage and bedrock profile in gold-placer mining; (2) water supply, involving underground drainage and storage conditions; (3) bedrock contours in dam-site and other structural investigations; (4) gravel and fill yardage, and other structural features along rights of way and in rock and gravel quarrying. Of particular interest, perhaps, to mining men are the problems of gold placer deposits and water supply. Geophysical work on gold placers is of especial interest because of the present expanded activity in all phases of gold mining. The development of a suitable water supply at, an economical cost is often of prime importance in insuring a successful mining venture. Particularly is this true in the arid Southwest. How-ever, the use of geophysical work in water supply is not confined to the needs of mining development.

The Tropicana Gold Mine, owned by AngloGold Ashanti Australia Ltd (70% owned and managed) and Independence Group NL (30%) is located 330 kilometres east-northeast of Kalgoorlie, Australia, in the newly developed Albany-Fraser Orogen. Following extensive feasibility studies, a high pressure grinding roll (HPGR)-ball milling circuit was selected based on the reduced power requirements and thus reduced operating expenses. The HPGR-ball mill circuit was estimated to require 75% of the energy of a standard semi-autogenous grinding (SAG) mill circuit. Even with an anticipated greater capital cost, the HPGR-ball mill circuit was found to give significantly better financial returns in all cases investigated in the feasibility study. A comparison between the specific energy requirements of the HPGR, crush and SAG based circuits (SABC) from the feasibility work was conducted and the HPGR circuit was found to be considerably more energy efficient. A survey was conducted and the efficiency of the HPGR was similar to both the overall circuit design and the HPGR laboratory results, reflecting the accuracy that is possible for design and operation of HPGR circuits.Between 2015 to 2016, the Tropicana circuit has achieved a 20% increase in throughput from 780 to 930 t/h, and this increase has been maintained in 2017. This improvement can largely be attributed to upgrades to material handling processes, increased HPGR speed and smaller HPGR screen apertures. The complicated nature of the property changes that accompany age-hardening has made it necessary to reconsider and to elaborate the simple dispersion theory.l It has been apparent for some time that more direct information is needed concerning the atomic mechanism of precipitation from solid solution if the theory of age-hardening is to be developed past a purely qualitative stage.‡ Fortunately, in recent years information has been developed which allows us to trace in detail the lattice changes accompanying the process of precipitation from solid solution. This information relates chiefly to the sequence of the several stages of lattice alteration by which the matrix lattice is transformed to the equilibrium precipitate lattice, and permits reasonable inferences to he drawn concerning the states of internal strain that accompany these stages. This information is most complete for the solid solution of copper in aluminum. The equilibrium precipitate is the 0 phase, "CuAl2." This forms in plates, parallel to the {100} matrix planes. The atom pattern and atom spacing on the plane in 0 lying parallel to this plane are roughly similar to those opposite it in the matrix.3 The formation of 0, however, is preceded by the formation of a transition lattice 0': which again lies parallel to the matrix {100} plane, but in this case the matching of atom pattern and spacing across the matrix-precipitate interface is nearly periect; thus there is lattice coherency across the interface and the interface is a plane of separation in only a very limited sense.'8 Particles of 0' may be recognized microscopically and form a well-defined Wid-manstatten figure.* The 0' lattice is recognized by the occurrence of diffraction lines on powder photo-grams or of spots on Laue photograms which may be analyzed in the usual ways to determine the lattice type and the lattice spacings. Very recent research 6, 7, 1 has shown, however, that streaks occur on the Laue photogram at an earlier point in time during the aging process. These streaks have been attributed to a preferential clustering of copper atoms into small platelike elements of only a few atoms in thickness and a lew hundred atoms in diameter, probably of the composition of " CuA12," which may be designated as Guinier-Preston zones or aggregates.1 It is difficult if not impossible to determine the lattice type and lattice spacing in these aggregates. It is possible1 that these aggregates are in fact ?' in a high State of dispersion; the inclination to argue this is strong, as we shall see later. Never-
