During the last few years, geophysical methods have been introduced to aid mining geologists and mining engineers in locating mineral deposits. These methods have been developed as the result of investigations of various physical characters of minerals and rocks. In prospecting for ore-bodies, electrical methods have proved most successful. These methods are based on the great differences in electrical properties, and especially in conductivity, between ore minerals and rock minerals. The electrical resistance of the common minerals, rocks, and ores in ohms per cubic céntimeter is given in the following table: [ ] The first attempts at electrical prospecting were based on observing currents of polarization around certain ore bodies, which currents it was possible to measure. This method has been developed by Prof. Schlumberger and has been utilized by him successfully. He is represented on this continent by Mr. Sherwin Kelly, who has successfully operated the method here.

The pegmatites of the Black Hills of South Dakota are the coarse-grained differentiates of the Harney Peak Granite. The Harney Peak Granite was intruded into the Pre-cambrian schist and quartzites and resulted in the Black Hills uplift. In the outer adzes of the granite intrusion occur the pegmatites. In the zoned pegmatites, representing the most highly differentiated portions of the parent magma, occur most of the minerals produced from pegmatites. These are of economic importance and they are the subject of this paper. The various mineral products will be taken up separately.

According to reports received by the United States Bureau of Mines , Department of Commerce , as of January 1 , 1930 , there were 412 completed refineries in the United States with a daily crude oil capacity of 3,755,585 barrels . This compares with 413 refineries of 3,509,540 barrels capacity on January 1 , 1929 , which indicates that whereas the number of refineries was practically unchanged , the total capacity increased 8 per cent during the past year . Of the completed plants as of January 1 , 1930 , 358 plants , of 3,634,825 barrels total capacity , were operating and 54 , with a capacity of 130,760 barrels , were shut down . Compared with a year ago , this indicates a decline in the percentage of the total refinery capacity that is inoperative . There has been a decided decrease in the number of shut-down plants since 1924 and 1925 , when one plant in every three was inoperative . Many of the inoperative plants of 1924 and 1925 were constructed soon after the boom times of 1920. Some of these were operated for a time but were unable to show a profit during 1923 and 1924 , when an overproduction of crude petroleum was accompanied by demoralized markets for refined products . Prices for refined products improved in 1925 and 1926 , but only a comparatively few of the shut -down plants , then partly obsolete , were able to obtain or renew their crude connections and compete successfully with the larger , more firmly established refineries . After five years or more of continuous idleness , a refinery would be rendered practically useless through corrosion and obsolescence . Consequently , most plants now being carried as " shut -down " have operated intermittently since 1923 . struction . Current methods of inspecting wire rope for broken wires or excessive wear include visual inspection, physical measurements of rope diameter, and electromagnetic nondestructive testing (NDT). Visual inspection and physical measurement arc the least comprehensive methods. Electromagnetic NDT enables a more thorough assessment of the condition of a wire rope, but the repeatability, accuracy, and objectivity of this method can be improved. One means of achieving this goal is to use a computer to analyze the test data and determine the condition of the wire rope, including the presence of broken wires and corrosion, and the amount of wear. An off-the-shelf data acquisition and analysis system was tested in a U.S. Bureau of Mines laboratory using a continuous loop of wire rope containing fabricated flaws. The test rope was run through a commercially available NDT instrument. The output of the instrument, normally connected to a paper strip chart recorder, was digitized and analyzed with a personal computer. These initial tests were successful in showing that the use of a computer can improve current methods of NDT waveform collection and analysis.

"The technical report form provides the headings to be used and content required when a completing a technical report to be filed in accordance with NI 43-101. The technical report is meant to be a summary of the scientific and technical information on the mineral property. The Instrument (NI 43-101) requires that technical reports be filed with Canadian provincial or territorial securities regulators to support certain disclosure of mineral exploration, development and production activities and results in order to permit the public and analysts to have access to information that will assist them in making investment decisions and recommendations. FORM 43-101F1 TECHNICAL REPORT INSTRUCTIONS (1) The objective of the technical report is to provide a summary of scientific and technical information concerning mineral exploration, development and production activities on a mineral property that is material to an issuer.This Form sets out specific requirements for the preparation and contents of a technical report. (2) Terms used in this Form that are defined or interpreted in National Instrument 43-101 Standards of Disclosure for Mineral Projects (the “Instrument”) will bear that definition or interpretation. In addition, a general definitioninstrument has been adopted as National Instrument 14-101 Definitions that contains definitions of certain terms used in more than one national instrument. Flash smelting is used to smelt a large proportion of the world's copper and nickel and some lead/zinc concentrates. Understanding the factors controlling the ignition of these concentrates is an important consideration in designing burners and maximising the throughput of the flash smelting process. The literature on the subject is briefly reviewed and techniques for the measurement of ignition temperature discussed. The mineralogy of the concentrates and the role of thermodynamics and phase diagrams in interpreting and predicting ignition behaviour are emphasised and applied to interpreting results obtained on a nickel concentrate.

THE Tri-State field is now believed to be the largest zinc district in the world. It has a potential production sufficient to supply the entire zinc demands of the country. It is estimated that a train 70 miles long would be required to haul the district's 1919 output of 60 per cent. zinc concentrates. For many years,, including 1917, Missouri surpassed Oklahoma in zinc production. In 1918, however, Oklahoma led by a wide margin and, in 1919, Missouri produced less than one-sixth of the total for the three states, when Kansas replaced Missouri in second place in the production. The district is now producing one-third of the zinc of the world and twice as much as ever before at the present price.

DURING the year 1907 an investigation of the Clinton formation in New York has been carried out under the direction of the State Geologist, and a full account of the results has been prepared for publication.1 The more important economic features of the report are summarized in the present paper. Previous knowledge of this, the type, section of the Clinton has been contributed mostly by Hall and Vanuxem in their reports for the Natural History Survey of New York, which were issued in their final form in 1842-43. Brief accounts of the ore-occurrences have been given by B. T. Putnam,2 J. C. Smock,3 A. H. Chester,4 and E. C. Eckel.5 Prof. C. H. Smyth, Jr.,6has discussed the origin of the Clinton ores in two papers, which, so far as the local occurrences are concerned, have removed all doubt that may have existed on that subject. Drilling in Missouri in 1945 dropped slightly from the preceding year. The only notable development was that in the Ballard area in Bates County, where a number of farmers drilled private gas wells with an average depth of a little more than 30o feet. Table 1 gives a summary of activities by counties. The total footage drilled was 36,186 ft. of which 20,489 ft. was by cable tools and 15,697 ft. by rotary tools.

The major parameters affecting dust flow at a longwall face are dust generation rate, air velocity and quantity distribution at the face, and the characteristics of the dust such as particle size distribution, density etc. Previous studies have identified the longwall shearer as the major source of the airborne dust in the faces. In this study, the effects of dust generation rate and shearer speed on the levels of ambient dust concentration are investigated. A series of experiments were performed under controlled conditions in a full scale simulated longwall face at the Lake Lynn Laboratory mine of U.S. Bureau of Mines using characterized bituminous coal dust. A trickle-duster was moved up and down the longwall face to simulate the shearer. In each experiment, a known amount of dust was dispersed by the trickle-duster into the air and the average dust generation rate was calculated. At the same time, gravimetric respirable and total airborne dust samples were collected and air velocity measurements were made along the face. The experimental conditions, data, and results are presented and discussed in this paper. The airborne dust concentration and air velocity data indicate that the concentration increases and air velocity decreases with distance from headgate for the first half of the face. Towards the tailgate, the air velocity increases with increasing distance but the dust concentration levels off with some variations. The data show that a higher dust generation rate results in higher dust concentration levels. More importantly, the data show that the rate of increase of airborne dust concentration is higher than that of dust generation rate. For the same air velocity distribution and dust generation rate, lower speed of the dust source results in higher airborne dust levels at the face.

The Olympias arsenical pyrite concentrate assaying 25 g/t Au, 40% S, 40% Fe and 12% As is highly refractory in nature; an oxidation pretreatment step is required to liberate gold and render it amenable to cyanidation. In the present study mineralogical analysis techniques including Image Analysis, SEM, EPMA, SIMS, Mossbauer, ICP/MS, etc., have been employed in order to investigate the mode of gold occurrence within the Olympias pyrites. Bacterial oxidation was used as a case pretreatment route and bacterially leached products were examined under SEM. The mineralogical observations and the relevant metallurgical and cyanidation test data were combined to establish a correlation between the mineralogical characteristics of the raw and oxidised products and conditions prevailing over the oxidative pretreatment step and the gold liberation achieved.

The Bond and the Hardgrove methods are widely used for the determination of the material?s grindability. Generally, the determination of the Bond work index of inhomogeneous materials can be carried out with high deviation using the conventional apparatuses and methods, because of the highly different grindability of components. This is more significant when the composite cement?s grindability is measured, which highly affects the design and operation of cement grinding mills. A possible solution can be the combined application of the Bond-method with the determination of the component?s weight ratio in the product and perform the Bond measurement until the steady state conditions of grindability coefficient (G) and chemical composition of the components are reached. To prove the applicability of the above mentioned idea systematic Bond and Hardgrove grindability tests were carried out of two phase composite materials. The experimental results showed that the application of the combined procedure is proven in order to have a more accurate and reliable calculation of the Bond work index of composite materials, especially when the components have significant difference in the grindability and concentration. The measurements also showed the possibilities and limits of the grindability test methods.

A NOTABLE amount of fossil resin exists in many of the bituminous coal beds of Utah. The upper part of these show a marked concentration of resin, which occurs primarily in the fracture seams. In general, these seams are less than 1/8 in. thick, but it is not uncommon to find coal with areas as thick as 3/8inches. The resin is of the hard kauri variety, with coloration varying from deep blood red to lemon yellow and almost colorless. There is also an almost black variety, which is not readily soluble in the same solvents as the lighter colored resins. These resins are valuable for many industrial purposes. When refined, they are suitable for uses similar to those for which lac resins are usually employed. They are particularly desirable for preparing dielectric varnishes. They are also desirable in preparing printing inks, waterproofing agents, special synthetic rubbers and rubber cements. They are especially suitable as an admixture in synthetic rubbers and cements, as they supply the essential tackiness the synthetics lack. Completely soluble in aliphatic and aromatic hydrocarbons. Insoluble in alcohols, ethyl acetate and other commonly used alcohols and esters. Compatible with natural and synthetic rubbers, chlorinated and cyclized rubbers, waxes, vegetable oils, mineral oils, rosin, ester gum, phenolic and modified phenolic resins and other natural and synthetic resins of like solvent solubility. The recovery and refining of these fossil resins has been the subject of much research work and has intrigued many investigators. Broadly speaking, the problem involves separation of the resin from the coal into a very high-grade concentrate, and subsequent treatment of this concentrate to produce an acceptable refined resin for its various usages. Several strip mine spoils are being examined to better understand their physical nature. The spoils were core drilled and each hole was logged using a nuclear geophysical tool to obtain bulk density data. Bulk density is an important property which provides insights into spoil porosity as well as other characteristics. The holes were drilled in spoils representing a variety of overburden removal methods, spoil ages, spoil depths, and area lithology. The relationship between bulk spoil density and mining method, spoil age, spoil depth, particle size, and lithotype is presented.

Potash is one of the essential chemicals used in fertilizing soil deficient in natural minerals . Europe uses a large tonnage of potash in the form of easily soluble salts , and this is particularly true of those countries where the natural minerals in the soil have been exhausted owing to intensive cropping of the land . The application of potash to the soil in these countries is essential if normal crops are to be obtained ; during the war , some European countries were unable to obtain sufficient potash , and productivity of the farming areas declined seriously . • The largest -known deposits of potash in the world ; with the possible. exception of Russia , occur in Germany , and the German output of processed salts constituted about 65 percent of world production prior to the war . The German potash-plant installations are large , modern , brick and steel construction and apparently built for a planned operation of many years . Two districts produced approximately 80 percent of the German potash; the Werra -Fulda district , near Vacha , had the largest production , and the Sudharz district , near Nordhausen and Sonderhausen , was second . (Fig . 1. ) Hannover and Stassfurt were two smaller producers . Potash fertilizers are rated in terms of potassium oxide (K20 ) . The usual basis for calculation of production or application of the salt is to reduce the potash content to 40 percent K₂0 .

Mitsubishi continuous process employs an electric furnace for settling matte from slag. Electrodes are immersed into the slag layer in the slag-cleaning furnace and the temperature of the melt is maintained at a predetermined level by Joule's heat. Electrodes are immersed to the depth where the current of each electrode is kept at a set value, and they are raised or lowered automatically to compensate for the deviation from it. Because electric resistance of the bath is varied with the matte level in the furnace and the composition and temperature of the slag, the immersion depth of the electrodes is affected by them. Therefore by monitoring the immersion depth and its change with time, abnormal situations in the furnace, such a~ rise of matte level or local abnormal state of melt, can be detected. In this paper, relations between state of the furnace and electrode behavior are discussed based on the plant data, and then a new and simple monitoring method of the condition of the furnace is proposed.

Thirty years ago, the U.S. gold mining industry was hanging on by its fingernails. Save for one great mine, the Homestake, most production was coming from copper smelters such as Kennecott and Magma. Even Homestake itself was under great pressure from rising costs and a fixed price for gold. The outlook was dim, to say the least. Today, as it has for most of the past decade, the American gold mining industry stands among the world leaders in production, and in the development of mining and mineral processing technology. What caused this dramatic change? Obviously, the freeing of the gold price was a major factor, as was the decline in South African production, but these events alone could not have created the U.S. strength we see today. It was technology, investment, and the determination of miners to build an entirely new industry that were the indispensable ingredients. The U.S. Bureau of Mines, with great foresight, had begun the research that led to heap leaching before the gold price began to rise, and Newmont had committed to build a small mill at Carlin, a move then considered quite risky. From that point, the U.S. gold mining industry was placed on lower-grade ores then being found in Nevada and elsewhere, but it was soon apparent that we would have to develop new technologies to deal with more refractory ores, carbonaceous as well as sulfide-bearing. This is now being done with considerable success. Despite its success, or perhaps because of it, the gold mining industry has come under pressure from various groups who characterize their activities as motivated by "public interest." The public interest they refer to properly include the health and safety workers and impacted communities, as well as protection of the environment, and with these concerns we miners have relatively little argument. In fact, we consider health, safety and the environment among our highest priorities, and not just because regulations may require us to do so. The argument, however, is not about the regulation of a viable mining industry, it is about a well-organized movement to attack and condemn mining in the media and to misrepresent its importance to the Nation and its willingness to accept responsible regulation. Once largely local or regional, the interest groups to which I refer are now quite large, national in scope, and even becoming international. This trend, taken together with finances raised from their dues and contributions, would make the interest groups formidable adversaries for mining, but their grip on the media enormously magnifies their influence. Unfortunately, it also makes possible the wide dissemination of incomplete, incorrect or slanted information. I am not here to "bash" the interest groups. On the whole, I believe that many of them have made positive contributions to society. As conservationists, however, I question their authority to make, or foster, decisions about which American industries and communities live and which die. To illustrate, I would like to present for your consideration the problem of cyanide, one of the issues over which the gold mining industry is most threatened. CYANIDE-POISON OR MIRACLE SOLVENT? Let me get this out of the way right up front: cyanide in most of its chemical forms is toxic. In some forms it is also listed as a carcinogen. These are adverse characteristics cyanide shares with a considerable number of industrial chemicals, including some that are widely used without the stringent regulations already in place for the mining uses of cyanide. In these uses, by the way, the risk to humans comes from direct ingestion of cyanide or cyanide-bearing solutions, or from the accidental acidification of solutions leading to release of hydrocyanic acid gas. That these risks are under control in mining can be seen from the fact that, in modern U.S. practice, there has never been a documented fatality attributed to cyanide! Because of its toxicity, cyanide cannot enter and be accumulated in the food chain. It can, however, be a threat to birds and animals that ingest cyanide-bearing solutions. Protection against this is, quite properly, a responsibility of individual mining operations, and considerable sums are spent each year to prevent or reduce bird and animal exposures. It should be evident, though, that many human activities, including highway traffic, windmills, use of pesticides and the like, result in bird and animal losses. Mining's use of cyanide, and the measures taken to protect birds and animals, should be considered in context. Cyanide must be kept out of surface streams and groundwater, and existing regulations mandate this. Any cyanide residues left in leach heaps, waste dumps and disused facilities must be eliminated, and we have proven technologies to do this now, just as we have means to detoxify tailings prior to disposal. The gold mining industry decries those rare instances when irresponsible operators fail to deal with contamination, and agrees that they should be held responsible. We do not agree, however, that the great majority of responsible companies should be punished, in advance, for accidents that have never happened. So much for the poison, what about the "miracle solvent?" Is that an overstatement? Well, consider the fact that gold has been called "noble" from earliest times, because it does not oxidize under atmospheric exposure, and that it appeared to the ancients to be utterly insoluble. Later generations of scientists did discover that it could be dissolved, but only by a combination of acids so potent that it became known as aqua Regia. Later still, it was found that chlorine would also dissolve gold, and attempts were made to base commercial processes on this, without a great deal of success. It remained
