El Salto de Miranda es una obra de gran envergadura que aumentará la producción de energía eléctrica al norte de Asturias; ya que con la industrialización, se efectúa el nacimiento de empresas gigantes como la ENSIDESA de Avilés y por ende, se requieren de grandes cantidades de fluido eléctrico. En este sentido, el presente texto describe el proceso de este recórd a través de un concurso promovido de los diversos frentes de los túneles del Salto de Miranda de la Hidroeléctrica del Cantábrico, obteniendo el récord europeo en perforación de túneles y lograr que el personal del frente "Batán B" desarrolle un avance de 25.10 m. en una sola jornada laboral dle 24 horas de trabajo.

Mineral exploration consists of the acquisition of data and their interpretation to ascertain the presence or absence of uncertain events. In general, the amount of uncertainty decreases during exploration when targets become increasingly well defined. Decisions on further exploration and whether or not mining should be commenced are based on new information using both objective facts and subjective reasoning. Computers play an important role during all stages of exploration. Three recent books (References 1-3) on decision-making in exploration and mineral-resources evaluation provide additional background supplementing the papers in this volume and articles in scientific journals or other conference proceedings (e.g., References 4 and 5) dealing with the subject. Other new developments to be considered are that microcomputers are becoming increasingly important in the earth sciences (Reference 6), and so are applications of artificial intelligence (Reference 7). Microcomputer- based technology allows rapid communication between field parties and main office. Expert systems are becoming increasingly sophisticated aids for mineral exploration an can now contain objective rules based on statistical theory (Reference 8).

In a previous paper,1 the occurrence of (0001) and (0111) twins was reported for compression tests of 60-deg-oriented sapphire rods in the temperature range from 1100° to 1300° C. Subsequent to this initial work, additional tests have been conducted, and twinning has been found to occur at temperatures as high as 1500° C. Also, the temperature and strain-rate conditions for the two types of twins and for slip have been established in more detail. The present note covers this more recent work. In opening the meeting I wish to express my greatest pleasure at being able to greet this joint session of the Mining and Electrical Engineers. As engineering develops, we find that the border lines between the different branches of engineering become more and more indistinct; the several fields overlap so much that they are three or four layers deep in places. It is only an accident that we couldn't have had the Mechanical Engineers also as a formal part of this gathering, because they are quite as much interested in this subject as the Electrical or Mining Engineers. As we all know, the electric-furnace operation consumes practically 100 pct cold steel scrap. This is in contrast to the operation of the open-hearth furnace, in which 40 pct or more of the charge may be hot metal. The problem of quality of scrap for the electric furnace is really twofold, and in the interest of simplification may be described under two headings: (I) physical specifications, (2) chemical composition. Shipment of electric-furnace scrap to meet required physical specifications is a relatively easy task. The scrap dealer is accustomed to preparing material to certain sizes and shapes. His employees readily execute orders when they are given in terms of length, width and thickness of the material to be loaded.

Mr. D. H. BRowne's paper upon " The Distribution of Phosphorus in the Ludington Mine" (Trans., xvii., 616) has interested me very much, and perhaps I cannot give a better proof of that, interest than an account of my work and observations in the same direction while chemist of the Hudson River Ore and Iron Company. The ores of this company lie in a chain of low hills running northwest and southeast, about three miles back from the eastern bank of the Hudson river, below Hudson, N. Y. They occur in thick veins, with the characteristic Hudson river slate formation as hangingrock and foot-wall, and dip about 45' east, outcropping in many places near the top of the western slopes.

Open stoping is one of the widely adopted methods in underground bulk mining. In this method, fanned or parallel holes are often drilled from a top sill down to a sublevel in the ore zone and blasted ring by ring into a stope for excavation. A mass stope blast may involve blasting rock from multi-level drift rounds and displacing the muck to specific locations in order to allow safe and easy access for ore removal. This paper presents a strategic mass stope blast that took place at a large lead and zinc underground mine in eastern Canada. The blast consisted of more than 800 holes drilled in six blocks from three different sublevels. The challenge lay in the control of ground vibration and muck movement using precise timing to complete the blasting within 6.5 seconds. During this time span, sufficient voids were created in each level to allow the muck to move from the upper to the lower levels in sequential order across the six mining blocks without bridging. This paper describes stope blast simulations using a discrete element computer code for modeling blast-induced rock displacement as well as the application of electronic detonators. These detonators provided the means to accomplish the desired firing sequence including a drop raise blast at the start of the mass blast. The modelling concept is also described in the paper.

Acid rock drainage is the result of exposure of sulfidic materials, such as pyrites and sulfidic ores, to air and water. The oxidation of these sulfides is catalyzed by more than a million times by the bacteria Thiobacillus jerrooxidans and close families. Inhibition of these bacteria can mitigate 98% or more of the acid loading generated. This can be achieved by the use of certain surfactants that are selectively bactericidal to the lithotropic acidophilic bacteria. Bactericides are used in two ways. As periodic or continuous treatments for prevention of acidification of material actively handled and moved, and in controlled release form for reclamation where treatment sets up a change in site microbiology to replace Thiobacillus jerrooxidans with heterotrophic bacteria and creates a stable site without need for further treatments. Use of bactericides begins with laboratory testing of the site material to qualify the site for bactericide treatment and dosage determination. Site specific treatments are designed for active sites and reclamation. Once acid production is controlled, solubilization of metals is correspondingly reduced. Results and economics of use from active and reclamation sites are presented.

"The three principal known mineral deposits of the Taku River area lie in the Tulsequah synclinorium. The axis of this north-south trending structure is along Tulsequah River valley; about 6 miles east of the eastern contact of the Coast Range batholith.The one proven mine of the area, the Polaris-Taku, is on the west side of the valley. It is a gold property, the gold occurring in fine needles of arsenopyrite disseminated in carbonatized volcanics. The mine was originally called the Whitewater, and the adjacent area the Whitewater gold belt. During the years 1937 to 1942 gold having a value of $3,284,000 was produced from 313,500 tons of ore milled."

In the forging industry, the increasing trend is to use DC cast billets as forging stock to replace extruded stock. However, there is little technical information available in open literature. In order to gain a better understanding of the behaviour of cast stock during deformation, a study was initiated to evaluate the impact of an homogenisation treatment on the billet prior to cold forging. Axisymmetric upsettings of cylindrical samples machined from DC billets were achieved in order to evaluate and compare flow stresses, crack initiation and propagation. Results show a 30% decrease in flow stress after homogenisation. Observations of the deformed samples show major cracking for the as-cast material. Optical microscopy and SEM observations have related the crack initiation to decohesion around ß -AlFeSi particles and subsequent growth along the constituent path. Homogenisation effectively breaks up and transforms the ß phase, present as platelets in the cast product, into smaller spherodised a-AlFeSi particles. This has the effect of preventing crack growth in the forged product. The homogenisation treatment also resulted in the reduction of Mg and Si in solid solution. The softer matrix generated 29% less die wear when compared to the as-cast structure. Based on the results of this study, it is thus recommended to homogenise cast billets prior to cold forging.

"IntroductionThe greater part of the iron ore industry in Canada is located along the Labrador-Quebec border on a geological formation known as the Labrador trough. The Labrador trough is a 700 · mile long geosynclinal segment composed of folded and faulted Proterozoic sediments, volcanics and intrusives, extending from Gagnon, Quebec, to the north west tip of Ungava Bay. This geosyncline can be divided into three parts (Fig. 1).The northern unmined part, extending from southern to northern Ungava Bay, is a low grade metamorphosed iron formation.The iron deposits of the central region, represented by Schefferville, are hematite-limonite ores formed by oxidation and leaching of an unmetamorphosed taconite formation. Average iron content of the ore is greater than 540Jo for direct shipping and 50% for plant feed.The deposits of the southern section (Carol Lake, Wabush, Mt. Wright, Gagnon) extend from just north of Carol Lake to Gagnon and is a metamorphosed silica-iron oxide (specular hematite and magnetite) formation averaging plus 30% iron.The mineral wealth of this area was first observed by Father Louis Babel about 1870 and again by Dr. A.P. Low of the Geological Survey of Canada in 1894. However, the remote location hindered development until after 1945. First production of direct shipping ore from Schefferville was in 1954. Production at Carol Lake commenced in 1962.This area now accounts for sixty million long tons (61 Mt) per year of processed iron ore products as follows:This chapter will concentrate on pelletizing and agglomeration as experienced at the Iron Ore Company's Carol Lake operation. However, whenever possible, reference will be made to alternate methods, procedures, equipment, etc."

"The premium on gold in London, reflecting the further depreciation of the pound sterling, has risen from about 22 per cent as noted in these reports for December, to about 28%. This will enable more South African gold mines to come into the profitably ;reducing class, and will also tend to increase the gold production from that region.Figures are now at hand showing the drop that occured in the sold output in the Transvaal, South Africa, during 1919, in which year 8,330,091 ounces of gold were produced against 8,418, 292 ounces in 1918, a decrease of 88,200 ounces. Annual gold output from this, the most important gold area in the world, has dropped almost one million ounces in the past three years, as the following table shows:Although the decrease in not as marked comparatively as that of 1918 over 1917, it is a further indication of the general world-wide curtailment of gold production, and the steady decline in production everywhere that is going on and will continue until some rational means is found to stimulate production, or until conditions return to normal.The subject of relief for the gold miner has received attention in all parts of the world, particularly in the United States and South Africa in the past few years, but in spite of all the plane that have been formulated to remedy the situation none have yet been adopted anywhere, due mainly to great danger of tampering with the gold standard. In the United. States a plan has advanced by H. N. Lawrie of the American Mining Congress to tax the new gold entering into manufacture of jewelry or the arts in general, as furnishing some measure of increased compensation to unprofitable gold mining.Gold production in Australia, as indication by figures issued by the Australian Mines department, shows a marked decrease, and for the first ten months of 1919 amounted to 914,957 ounces against 1,073,317 ounces for a similar period in 1918. Western Australia produces about two thirds of all the gold rained on that continent. The total gold production of Australia for 1919 will reflect the universal decrease in output.Ever since June 7, when the embargo on the export of gold Was lifted, there has been steady and heavy outflow of gold from this country, as a consequence of which considerable gold accumulated during the war has been exported. A material balance equation was derived for calculating (1) the initial oil volume and (2) the relationship of average reservoir pressure to net gas in storage in reservoirs used for natural gas storage operations. The equation is also applicable to secondary-recovery operations where reservoirs are completely repressured and gas cycled. Using this equation minimized two probable sources of appreciable error in conventional material balance calculations: inaccurate measuring of and accounting for produced gas, and differences between true reservoir pressure and average reservoir pressures as derived from bottom-hole pressure measurements. A new procedure is presented for calculating water encroachment. By solving the conventional material balance equation and the derived equation for gas storage simultaneously, the values for initial oil in place and net water encroachment can both be determined.

Gold mineralisation at Wapolu lies within an exposed arcuate zone at the decollement contact between a basement dome of high grade metamorphics and an overlying ophiolite sequence. This contact was originally a thrust fault which has since become a decollement zone for gravity sliding in association with basement doming. Hydrothermal models for the gold mineralisation postulate an epithermal system in which fluids were channelled up the decollement with boiling of those fluids causing hydrothermal brecciation and subsequent gold deposition. The alteration assemblages, fluid inclusion data and geochemistry indicate that the upper levels of the system are exposed.

Pressure on production at New Zealand China Clays has led to the development of a dewatering control loop for fine halloysite china clay. The development was based on the analysis of data from the automation of plate and frame filter presses. The analysis of the data has led to process changes, and the ability to quickly solve dewatering problems. As a result of control in the dewatering circuit press times have reduced on average 117% and output has increased proportionally.

THE present critical state of the supply, distribution, and utilization. of coal and the necessity for pooling and zoning coals calls renewed attention to the lack of any fully adequate classification of coal. In the past coals have been classified as anthracite, semianthracite, semibituminous, bituminous, subbituminous coals, and lignite, and a few special types, such as splint coal and cannel coal. But under the term bitumi¬nous coal are included a great variety of coals differing markedly both physically and chemically. The term subbituminous coal covers as great a range of chemical differences. In order to distinguish these varieties of bituminous coals it has been customary to designate coals by names derived from the place where mined, or by the name of the bed from which it is mined. Thus, in the market reports, coals are quoted as Pocahontas coal, New River or Sewell coal, Moshannon coal, Ohio coal, Williamson County coal, Jellico coal, and so on indefinitely, no limit being set as to the boundaries of the area to which a given name is applied. Nor is there any scale by, which the coal from one place may be compared with the coal from some other district or some other bed. On the one hand, coals from the same district may be quite distinct and sell at very different prices or coal from the same bed may differ greatly in different districts; on the other hand, coals from different states may be so similar physically and chemically that one could replace the other in practical use without any appreciable difference in service.

RECENTLY the producing branch of the petroleum industry has shown a considerable and growing interest in the quantitative determination of the water, oil, and gas content of cores as it relates to estimation of reserves, to providing a, basis for judging as to the feasibility of applying various secondary-recovery and pressure-maintenance processes, and in general to the operation of producing properties. For years it has been known that oil, gas and water coexisted in the pores of many semidepleted oil measures. It is now generally believed that oil-bearing beds contain connate water in amounts varying up to 50 per cent of the pore space. However, only lately has reliable direct evidence of the extensive occur-rence of connate water in oil sands been published. Very little work has been done to ascertain the effect of this water on the productivity and ultimate recovery of oil from wells. It was the intent of this research to study the influence of this indigenous water on the flow of oil through unconsolidated sands, with the hope that the results could be applied qualitatively to the flow of oil in underground reservoirs partly saturated with water. Obviously, ultimate recovery estimates based on the void volume of the reservoir will be in error unless a, conscious or unconscious correction is made for the volume of water occupying a portion of the effective pore volume of the reservoir- Evaluation engineers in the past have applied arbitrary saturation and recovery factors that may inadverently have compensated for the failure to consider specifically the water content. Nevertheless, the evidence available indicates that these factors need revising if each is to be independently correct and truly representative. Although the mere fact that the connate water renders part of the pore volume of the reservoir incapable of containing oil is of primary importance to the operator, it is also of interest to know whether and to what extent the presence of varying amounts of interstitial water influ-ences the permeability of the sand to oil.

(Pittsburg Meeting, March, 1910.) IN the copper-mining district of northern Michigan a fair-sized mine usually operates two or more shafts along the strike of the lode, these shafts being usually at least 1,000 ft. apart. The tonnage to be hoisted from each shaft is large-from 13,000 to 25,000 tons per month. The hoisting-engines used are generally steam-driven, non-condensing, duplex engines with Corliss valves, supplied by steam from separate boiler-plants where the distance between shafts is great. In an attempt to centralize power-plants and secure central-station economies, the Winona Copper Co. installed an electric hoist of the Ilgner type, with Ward Leonard control. A brief description of this plant has already been published.1 The only point of variation from the simple Ilgner set lies in the connection of two generators to a single induction-motor by flexible couplings. These generators serve motors which operate hoisting-drums at separate shafts, viz., No. 4 shaft, Winona, and No. 1 shaft, King Philip. , The hoist for No. 4 shaft, is about 1,700 ft. from the power-plant, and in this building the motor-generator set is placed. No. 1 King Philip hoist is 1,500 ft. from the motor-generator set. The equipment of the motor-generator set is as follows: In the middle of the set is a 12-pole, 450-h-p., 600-rev. per min., 2,080-volt, three-phase, 60-cycle, variable-speed induction-motor, connected on each side to a 20-ton fly-wheel which is 10 ft. in diameter, and to a 6-pole, 170-kw, 575-volt, interpole, direct-current generator. On each side of the shaft is placed a separate exciter, which delivers current at 125 volts. India does not possess any soluble potash reserves and depends completely on imports. In this study, an attempt has been made to recover potash (K) values from the mica sample employing thermal and mechanical routes followed by leaching. Direct leaching of mica in different lixiviants is found to be ineffective with very low K-dissolution (1–5%). Heat treatment with different fluxes, such as NaCl, NaOH, and CaCl2, is carried out and almost 85% K-values are recovered. Mechanical activation of mica and with different calcium additives is carried out to recover potash values. K is recovered in leach solution in the form of soluble salts, such as K2CO3, K2SO4, and KOH, and leach residue consists mainly of calcium-alumino-silicates. Using mechanical activation with flux, it is possible to recover >95% K-values from mica sample. Mechanical activation with calcium-based flux is found sustainable in the recovery of K-values from mica.
