BHP is the world's largest copper concentrate producer with production from mines at Escondida (Chile), Ok Tedi (Papua New Guinea), and Island Copper (Canada). The entire concentrate production is further processed into refined copper by third-party smelters around the world. In anticipation of an expansion in the global copper concentrate production capacity and a corresponding increase in treatment and refining charges by copper smelters, BHP has continuously evaluated various opportunities for downstream copper processing. An expansion in the Escondida mine production, combined with BHP's interest in processing some of its concentrate production on-shore in Chile, ultimately resulted in the development of the Escondida Leach Process. This process was specifically developed for higher grade concentrates, such as from Escondida. An ammoniacal lixiviant and air are used under ambient conditions to leach less than one-half of the contained copper values. After solid-liquid separation, the solution is subjected to solvent extraction regenerating the ammoniacal lixiviant and the copper loaded organic phase is stripped in spent electrolyte returned from the electrowinning plant where ultra-high quality SX-EW copper is produced. The solid leach residue can, if required, be upgraded by flotation to produce a high-grade copper concentrate with improved fuel values and a pyrite tail for disposal. After an 18-month bench and pilot plant scale program and an engineering feasibility study, Minera Escondida Limitada decided to build an 80 000 tonnes of copper per year facility near Antofagasta, Chile. The installed investment cost amounted to around $160 million. The plant went into commercial production in November 1994 and better than 99.9995 per cent Cu cathodes were produced right from the start. BHP believes that the process and the commercial plant are an excellent example of a novel approach advancing the science of copper metallurgy in harmony with present demands for environmentally sound processes and high quality products.

INTRODUCTION Coal is being mined from beneath residential areas, structures, bodies of water and other surface features in the coalfields to the north, south and west of Sydney. The particular problems faced by mine operators in these areas vary considerably due to differences in the overlying strata, the variation in the depths of cover and also depend on the number of seams being mined. Detailed subsidence work first commenced in the Southern Coalfield in 1965 and is now being carried out over areas of extraction at roost collieries. The analysis of the results of the early investigations and of the work which continues in other areas has shown that there is a consistent relationship between subsidence and mine geometry and has led to a reliable empirical method for the prediction of subsidence. In addition, particular aspects of each of the studies in the Southern Coalfield results in a clearer understanding of strata movements and of the resulting subsidence. The features of a subsidence trough apply generally to all areas but the magnitudes of specific features vary according to the stratigraphy of the particular coalfield. The aim of the subsidence work is to quantify the effects of subsidence for a range of mining geometries and mining conditions to enable the maximum safe recovery of coal from beneath surface features. The importance of local subsidence investigations is becoming more evident to mine operators and to authorities or organisations with surface interests. The subsidence work also provides important information on the stabilities of pillars of coal which remain unmined between panels of extracted coal. These pillars are not extracted either because of poor mining or geological conditions, or because pillar extraction is not part of the particular mining operation. Subsidence studies over these coal pillars clearly establish whether the pillars have remained stable or have failed to support the overlying strata. With subsidence studies continuing over several years, it is possible to assess the stabilities of these pillars on a long term basis. BACKGROUND TO THE STUDY OF SUBSIDENCE Geographical setting Most of the black coal production in Australia comes from the Sydney Basin. The coal seams extend for approximately 350 km along the coast of New South Wales and inland for distances up to 150 km. The City of Sydney is located near the centre of the coastal extent of the Basin where coal has been mined at a depth of 900 m. The Sydney Basin is part of the Main Coal Province of NSW and is divided into several coal- fields. The Southern Coalfield to the south of Sydney contained 15 operating mines and produced 12.7 million tonnes of raw coal during the 12 months to June 1981. The collieries discussed later are shown in Fig. 1. The prominent topographical feature of the area is the Illawarra Escarpment which rises to 400 m above sea level, or 300 m above the coastal strip along the South Pacific Ocean. The escarpment is mainly sand- stone and the weathering of the cliff line has resulted in a covering of talus material at its base. Several collieries are located near the seams which outcrop along the escarpment. The city of Wollongong is located in a scenically attractive area on the coastal plain. The suburbs of Wollongong extend north along the coastline, south to beyond Lake Illawarra and west to the lower slopes of the escarpment. The Illawarra Escarpment forms the eastern boundary of the Woronora Plateau. On a regional scale the surface dips gently to the west and thus forms a watershed for the rivers, most of which flow in a general north westerly direction, sometimes forming steep gorges in the sandstone. These rivers join the Nepean and Hawkesbury River system and flow into the Pacific Ocean north of Sydney. Seven dam have been constructed over the Southern Coalfield (Fig. 1) and with one large dam further to the west, their stored waters provide the needs of the Cities of Sydney and Wollongong and the surrounding districts. A large part of the area affected by mining is the undeveloped bushland of the associated catchment areas. In general no special precautions have been required with respect to subsidence with the exception of the dam structures and stored waters. With the increase in coal mining activities and the expanding residential development south of the City of Campbelltown in the outer Sydney Metropolitan area, subsidence is becoming an increasingly important area of research. Structures which have been affected or considered are townships and extensive residential areas, buildings of historical importance, major tollways, and a high pressure natural gas pipeline. The subsidence effects of mining beneath natural features within national parks is coming under study as mining approaches these areas. Geological setting The coal seams of the Southern Coalfield lie within the Illawarra Coal Measures. They contain high rank coking coal used in the local steel industry and for export. The Bulli Seam is mined extensively through- out the Southern Coalfield with the lower Wongawilli Seam being second in importance with regard to coal production. Magnetic liners can improve the performance of ball mills by increasing grinding efficiency, extending service life, and reducing maintenance costs. Despite their importance, the fundamental understanding and the quantitative investigation on the effects of the magnetic liners has not been addressed in the literature. This paper addresses this gap by studying charge motion, and how the use of a magnetic liner affects the breakage mechanism of the mill, using discrete element method (DEM) modeling and the Hertz-Mindlin contact model with relative velocity dependent (RVD) rolling friction. Charge motion was modeled under different mill speeds. Compared to conventional steel and rubber liners, the charge motion in the magnetic liner mill was predominantly cascading. Quantitative analysis of the energy dissipation within the mill was conducted to investigate mill breakage. Regardless of speed, over 50% of the total energy dissipation in the magnetic liner mill was in the form of abrasion and attrition. The results highlighted the appeal of magnetic liners in secondary and regrinding application, where abrasion and attrition are considered more efficient in the fine material breakage, and where impact is ideally minimized to reduce mill wear. A number of experiments were conducted to assess the effect of different model parameters on the performance of the magnetic liner mill. The highest abrasion/attrition intensity was observed with high values of the model parameters namely the restitution coefficient, static friction coefficient, and rolling friction coefficient.

Technol., 9: 87-99Black lung disease in coal miners induced by the formation of fine fragments of coal imposes very high human and direct costs. A fundamental understanding of the fracture processes leading to fine-fragment formation in coal by applying principles of fracture mechanics is presented. A four-step hypothesis is proposed which sequentially describes the mechanics of fine-fragment formation during a generic coal material—coal cutting tool interaction. These steps include: (1) development of a crush zone under the tool tip, (2) macrocrack propagation. (3) shear movement along macrocracks, and (4) additional fragmentation from shear. This model contains two sources of fine fragments, namely crushing under the tool tip and shearing along the macrocrack surfaces. Three critical assumptions are made that require experimentation. First, the coal material must contain flaws of sufficient density and sufficiently small size to liberate fine fragments by crushing. The following conceptual relationships are proposed between flaw size, spacing and fragmentation: first, the active flaw size must be less than the desired particle size and second, the spacing (or density) must be in the order of the particle size. The second major assumption is that a mixed mode fracture theory will describe the initiation and crack growth direction for the microscopic inherent flaws. The third assumption is that some degree of roughness damage, and interlocking exist along the newly formed macrocrack surfaces such that a small amount of shear movement along that surface leads to additional particle formation at a microscopic scale. Preliminary analysis of the mechanical regime under a cutting tool tip places order of magnitude bounds on the stresses strains, cycle time, stress rates and strain rates. Even though the tool moves and loads the coal material with considerable speed, a quasi-static stress analysis is applicable in this region.Introduction.The generation of fine fragments (respirable dust) during various coal mining processes may lead to the incidence of coal workers pneumoconiosis (black lung disease). The human and direct cost of dust-induced illnesses in coal miners is very large. By several. accounts [1,2] the Federal Government paid out about $12 billion to almost 500,000 coal miners and their beneficiaries between 1970 and 1980. In addition, several states and many coal operators have established their own compensation programs at costs ranging from a few cents to several dollars per ton of coal mined [2]. Since 1980, 'the present liability of the Federal disability trust fund has approached $20 billion and the benefit payments exceed $1 billion per year. There .are also hidden costs due to dust, in the form of increased equipment wear and decreased operator productivity, both of which are due to the poor operating environment. Quantifying these costs may be difficult; however, they may be in the same range as the present pneumoconiosis costs. These high human and direct dollar costs may be prevented or reduced through long term research efforts directed at understanding the generation and control of respirable dust and the incidence of black lung disease."

Abstract-Observations of ground behavior in mining the Choka Dulkan ore body have been described. Ore recovery was limited to approximately 60% because unconsolidated hydraulic fill did not permit either the widening of stope spans nor secondary ore recovery from pillars. Stope undercutting induced high stress concentrations. However, as extraction progressed, ground conditions improved but before extraction was complete they deteriorated again. After completion of a stope, the remnant rib and crown pillars continued to be deformed by other stresses for some time.

Acid mine drainage (AMD) research under the MEND program has been ongoing since 1988 at the Heath Steele Mines waste rock piles including sulphide material, outside Newcastle, NB. In 1989 approximately 10,000 mt of waste rock was placed on a prepared sand base with an underlying impermeable membrane. The waste rock pile was heavily instrumented for measuring oxygen concentrations and temperatures. In September 1991, a composite soil cover designed for the Heath Steele climatic conditions, using local soils, was placed over the pile, creating a totally enclosed system. Moisture content and oxygen probes were installed within the composite soil cover to monitor changes within the soils over time, while two large-size lysimeters were installed below the cover to monitor the hydraulic conductivity of the cover. The waste rock site has been monitored on a monthly basis since installation of the cover, for performance of both cover and waste rock. The monitoring shows very clearly that the placement of the composite soil cover has had a major impact on the generation of AMD. Major reductions in temperature and oxygen concentrations within the waste rock pile indicate that the cover has significantly inhibited the oxidation reaction that generates the AMD. Performance data have shown that the cover has maintained its integrity under the climatic conditions of the area.

On short term, planning techniques require more details to ensure feasibility, giving importance to operation constraints and use of available resources. In GUEMASSA (Morocco), the ore mass is mined by cut-and- fill method. Correct organization requires to forecast a few weeks ahead the schedule of blocks to be mined, in order to respect ore quantity and grade constraints. While operating constraints are tackled, feasibility is assumed with an average production capacity suggesting that resources will be available. In ST-SALVY (France), scheduling operations is not possible if not considering account resource allocation. In any stope within the vertical vein zinc deposit, the cut-and-fill method enables to mine each horizontal slice according to various strategies, de- pending how to use manpower and equipment, and selecting among predefined scenarios known as realistic. For KOFFIEFONTEIN (South Africa), the kimberlite pipe is mined by a sub-level-stoping method. To achieve the production target, precise organization over one month is obtained, using on& resources when available and respecting all mining rules. This combined operation scheduling and resource allocation is called sequencing. While following the BONANZA concept, providing a planning- retrieval process, sequencing offers more. Very detailed, it is possible to check the impact of resource parameters and mining rules. The sequencer, like a simulation platform, enables expertise. Each sequencer must be tailor-made to fit to each specific mine. The next challenge is to produce a generic environment.

The purpose of this paper is to explore relations between the distribution and composition of uranium deposits on the Colorado Plateau and mineralogic, chemical, and lithologic aspects of their host rocks. The paper also appraises the host-rock sandstones as possible sources of elements in the uranium deposits. Other possible sources of elements are not discussed. Uranium deposits on the Colorado Plateau consist largely of sandstone and small amounts of mud-stone impregnated with uranium and vanadium miner- als and a suite of minor accessory minerals containing copper, lead, zinc, silver, iron, cobalt, nickel, yttrium, molybdenum, selenium, and arsenic, in addition to other elements locally. The deposits consist of clusters of closely spaced ore bodies which commonly aggregate several thousand tons, but range in size from less than one ton to several million tons. With only rare exception, the deposits show no close relation to fractures. The ore bodies are generally tabular in layers nearly parallel to the bedding in the host rocks, or they cross bedding at large angles to form roll structures. Absence of fracture control necessitates that the ore and associated elements were transported to the deposits by way of interstitial pore spaces in the sandstones. This points to the general process of lateral secretion as a possible mechanism of ore formation, and suggests the host-rock sandstones as a possible source of the metals. Roll structures in the ore

An operational 9 meter (30-foot) high gold heap leach pile was investigated by excavating test pits up to 6 meters (20 feet) deep, obtaining bulk and relatively undisturbed thin wall drive samples, and observing the ore distribution patterns exposed in the test pit walls. The clayey ore is crushed, agglomerated with lime and cement, and deposited on the leach pads using a radial stacker. Laboratory tests performed included moisture-density, gradation, compaction, Atterberg limits, permeability (constant and falling head), and triaxial strength tests. Discussion is presented on the effects of agglomeration on the permeability and strength characteristics of the in-place ore. Also discussed is the effect of deposition of the ore using the radial stacker.

"Separation removal of fluorite and calcite from scheelite is a difficult technical operation in current industrial practice with a heating process causing large energy consumption and high production costs. In this work, the floatation separation at room temperature were carried out using two types of skarn scheelite ores. The results showed that CaO and Na203 are better than NaOH as a regulator in pH value. In the rough floatation and first cleaning floatation, CaO (500g/t), Na203 (3000g/t) were used as a pH regulator, waterglass (4000g/t) was as a gangue depressant, oleic acid or sodium oleate were used as a collector. The degree of the obtained W03 concentrate was more than 65% (commercial product).IntroductionThe mainly gangue in scheelite are quartz, calcite, barite and some rare metal ores. There are three main types of scheelite for floatation: scheelite--quartz (silicate minerals) type, scheelite-calcite/ fluorite type, scheelite--calcite/fluorite/barite type. Generally speaking, scheelite--quartz type is separated easily, and others are difficult, on the contrary. The last two kinds of scheelite are always called scheelite--calcite/fluorite (barite) type, because there are similar floatation ability and floatation process between them. Scheelite, calcite and fluorite have same cation - Ca2+, it makes them have close floatation property [1]. Separation removal of fluorite and calcite from scheelite is a difficult technical operation in current industrial practice.The traditional separation method is a heating floatation process (Petrov's process) [2]. It can deal with many kinds of scheelite, and can be obtained stable quality ofW03 concentrate. On the other hand Petrov's process causes large energy consumption, high production costs and bad operational environments. Since 1980s, scheelite ambient temperature floatation has become the mainstream of study [3]. Nowadays more and more studies on scheelite floatation focus on complex reagent system [4, 5], rigid operating rules and at the same time development new regulator [1, 5]. Some research show there are new regulators can concentrate scheelite efficiently, but it may cause high costs, potential pollution and difficulty to spread. Oleic acid and sodium oleate used as collector have high adsorption capacity to scheelite, but same to calcite and fluorite[6]. So, it would not get ideal effect for separation of scheelite. In this work, the floatation separation at room temperature were carried out using two kinds of skarn scheelite ores. Calcium oxide and sodium carbonate was used as a pH value regulator, waterglass was used as a depressant and Oleic acid/sodium oleate was used as a collector. The result of experiment showed that the degree of the obtained W03 concentrate was more than 65% by one time ambient temperature roughing floatation, several times ambient temperature cleaning process."

INTRODUCTION MINERAL deposits of Salmo map-area (Figure 1) have aroused the interest of prospectors for more than a half-century. Properties within the map-area have produced lead, zinc, silver, tungsten, and gold. Sheep Creek mining camp ranks fifth in the Province in the total production of gold, but during recent years interest has been concentrated upon base metals, and meticulous prospecting and exploration have resulted in the discovery of many large zinc-lead orebodies. PREVIOUS WORK Geological investigations of the region were begun long ago, and it is interesting to trace the development of ideas with our increasing knowledge of the geology of this complex area. The first geological examination of the rocks of Salmo map-area was made in 1859-60 by H. Bauerman (1), who was employed as geologist accompanying the first international Boundary Survey. Bauerman examined the rocks exposed along Pend d'Oreille river and published a section indicating that the sedimentary rocks are probably of Palaeozoic age, and are intruded by granite of unknown age. McConnell and Brock(2), in 1894 - 1900, carried out the reconnaissance mapping of the West Kootenay Sheet, on which they outlined the Mesozoic rocks of the Rossland Beaver Mountain volcanic groups that they believed rested unconformably upon the sedimentary rocks to the southeast, which they regarded as of Palaeozoic age.

Producing robust agglomerates with desirable structural properties is the key to success of the heap leaching of complex, low-grade nickel laterite ores. Mechanically strong but porous agglomerates with narrow size distribution (e.g., 5 ? 40 mm) are required to build permeable and perennially stable heaps of 4 ? 10 m height. The characterization of granules? microstructure is essential for greater understanding and correlation with the concomitant mechanical properties and robustness. In this study, we used non-destructive, computed X-Ray tomography analyses and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) in tandem with conventional compressive strength,and integrity/stability tests to draw links between nickel (Ni) laterite agglomerate strength/stability, internal microstructure (e.g.,porosity, inter-particle bridges) and binder type. It is shown that binder composition (e.g., tap water vs. 30% w/w H2SO4) and post-agglomeration drying both significantly impact on granules? physicochemical and microstructural properties. Acidic binder, in contrast with tap water, leads to significant incongruent leaching of different species from particles during ore-binder mixing and agglomeration. Upon wet agglomerate curing, solidified/recrystallized leached species form strong intra-granular solid bridges which, lead to greater compressive strength of dry agglomerates. Structural stability/integrity of cured agglomerates in acidic solution, however, decreases dramatically due to greater porosity and acid solubility of intra-granular solid bridges. These findings are useful in shedding more light on agglomerate structure characteristics and their optimization for enhanced column and heap leaching with concentrated sulphuric acid.

A series of geological surveys were completed in six coal mines in connection with a Bureau of Mines research program on methane control. The aim of these surveys was twofold: First, to study the overall geology of the coalbed, and second to use the resulting data to evaluate the influence of the geological characteristics of the coalbed on safe and efficient coal extraction. This report explains the advantages of geologic maps and fence diagrams in coal mining, and how the knowledge gained from such geologic investigations of mines can help control many underground problems.

Constructing new infrastructure in urban areas increasingly entails the use of sophisticated techniques for soil improvement in order to minimize surface disturbances in adjacent areas and damage to existing structures. In Naples, at the new Piazza Garibaldi subway station, TREVI built a 45 m deep shaft using a hydromill, and utilized soil freezing for the excavation of the four station's tunnels, fifty meter long, located approximately 30 meters below the water table. An innovative use of directional drilling was specially developed by TREVI to successfully complete this challenging job.

This paper presents an application of computer simulation methods to the modeling and forecasting of the United States coal market. The computer methods employed as well as the model constructed are based on economic and econometric theory. The contents of the paper include a description of the coal market, the corresponding computer model, tests of model validation, computer generated scenarios for the period 1980-1985, and comparisons of the scenarios generated with that of other major coal forecasts.

Different gas purging methods to metallurgical baths have been applied to date, among which are top lancing and bottom blowing through tuyeres or porous plugs. Among these, the porous plug bottom blowing technique has shown higher efficiency in gas utilization than tuyeres and top blowing, due to smaller bubble size and lower liquid velocity. However, the studies related to bottom stirring of metallurgical baths are limited to slag-less or thin slag-covered melts. In particular, there is no examination of stirring ability in conditions similar to Falconbridge's Slag Make Converter, where the bath is covered with a thick slag layer and a stream of solids is charged on the bath from top. This study was undertaken to investigate the application of gas purging through a porous plug in stirring in and melting of the solid feeds. The spreading behaviour and melting time of a solid layer forming on a plume created by stirring were calculated using the existing models. The results show that formation of a thick solid layer, specifically in areas beyond the plume region is very likely. Nevertheless, the thickness of the layer and melting time do not appear unreasonably high. It is predicted that by proper controlling of gas flowrate and plug configurations, successful solid charging through the mouth can be practiced.

Thermal treatment can significantly improve industrial comminution operations by reducing energy requirements and increasing mineral liberation. The assistance of thermal pretreatment prior to grinding by microwave heating is scrutinized in this study. For this purpose three copper ore samples with different chemical composition were used. To see the effect of microwave heating on ore; work index, breakage rate and breakage distribution functions of original and heat treated samples were examined. The results obtained in this study did not show significant improvement in the grindability characteristics of the studied ores with microwave heat treatment. The inadequate amount of microwave transparent matrix was the main reason for the absence of cracks and micro-fractures in the microwave heated copper samples.

Laronde Mine has been working for a number of years to identify substances that could contribute to process water toxicity and to find an effective way of removing these contaminants from the water. Initial studies have identified ammonia, nitrite, cyanide, thiocyanate, cyanate, dissolved organic carbon, copper and zinc as potential toxicants. Bench-scale tests were carried out with Lakefield Research to find a water treatment process that could effectively remove the suspected toxicants. Nine treatment processes were evaluated: 1) granular activated carbon (GAC) filtration followed by zeolite, 2) zeolite filtration followed by GAC filtration, 3) aeration followed by GAC filtration, 4) multi-stage GAC filtration, 5) chlorination followed by dechlorination, 6) addition of clay based polymer, 7) treatment with peroxide and ultra-violet light, 8) bulk addition of GAC and zeolite powder, 9) treatment with bacteria. This article presents a summary of the test results and of the problems associated with the evaluation of technologies for the treatment of toxicity.

This report presents the findings of a study of a portion of the Clover-Rush Run oilfield located in Roane County, W. Va. The study was made to investigate the possibilities of secondary oil recovery in the Big Injun sandstone underlying the William Kaufman lease. Reservoir properties, original reserves, and primary oil recovery are also presented. The investigation is based on a core analysis and related laboratory tests, well records, field production data, and subsurface information from the Kaufman property. A theoretical primary oil recovery of 9.7 percent of original oil in place is predicted for the reservoir. A waterflood performance prediction of a hypothetical pilot area was made by use of a computer. The prediction showed that, based on laboratory oil water relative permeability curves, the water-injection time needed to initiate oil production is excessive and that the stabilized water-injection and corresponding oil-production rates are very low. This precludes waterflooding the reservoir on an economic basis. A prediction for secondary oil recovery by gas injection was attempted but could not be completed because essential reservoir data were not available. In July 1965, the lease operator initiated, and is currently conducting, a gas-injection program, but there had been no increase in oil production up to November 1966.
