This paper presents a case study of a piling contract undertaken at Keble College in Oxford in the year 2001. Unusually, and for the first time in the United Kingdom, piles were successfully constructed containing a network of plastic pipes, which are subsequently to be connected to the heating and cooling system for the new building. The pipes cast in the piles facilitate the transfer and storage of geothermal energy between the structure and the underlying ground mass, allowing the new building to be both heated in winter and cooled in summer economically and in an environmentally friendly way. The philosophy of the geothermal pile technology is presented, together with the modified pile construction techniques employed on the site.

Laboratory test work on heavy liquid separation of sylvite from halite is reported. Numerous tests were run on sylvite ore sized in the ranges of 4x20 mesh, 10x65 mesh, 8x100 mesh, -8 mesh and -10 mesh with heavy liquids in the range of 2.05 to 2.15 sp gr. From the test results, it was concluded that, with the type of ore under study and a size in the range of -8 mesh, a recovery as high as 90% could be achieved with a product grade of 70% KCl. However, a final product at an acceptable recovery cannot be made with one pass, and the float must either be further processed with heavy liquids or dried and sent to a conventional froth flotation circuit. Potash ores occurring in this country consist essentially of sylvite and halite plus minor amounts of magnesium sulfate salts and montmoril-lonite-type clays. Recovery of potash minerals from evaporite ores in the North American potash fields is accomplished almost exclusively by use of amine flotation. European practice involves froth flotation as well as solution-crystallization processes. Laboratory and pilot plant test work has been reported in Europe and the U. S. on the application of heavy media separation to potash ore beneficiation. Work was probably discontinued because of lack of ore with the required very coarse liberation characteristics (1/8 to 1/2 in. liberation size). Sylvite, with a gravity of 1.99, and halite, with a gravity of 2.17, appear to be ideal for separation by heavy liquids, which are now available in gravities from 1.59 to 2.95. This paper reviews preliminary results obtained from laboratory test work on heavy liquid separation of sylvite from halite. TEST WORK The heavy liquids used in the tests under discussion were chlorobromethane, with a specific gravity of 1.923, and dibromethane, with a gravity of 2.490. These liquids, completely miscible, were combined in the proportions needed to give a mixture having the desired specific gravity. Feed for the laboratory tests was mine-run ore screened to the desired mesh sizes. In conducting the tests, the sample was fed at a constant rate into a stream of heavy liquid and the mixture directed into a small separatory vessel. The float overflowed into a collecting pan while the sink collected in the bottom of the separatory vessel and was removed at the end of the test. Approximately 500 g of feed constituted a charge. Pulp density of the feed was kept low to prevent particle to particle interference in separation. With feed in the range of 8x100 mesh, a pulp density of under 10% solids by weight was found advisable. With coarser feed the pulp density could be carried as high as 15% solids. Time of separation was very rapid. In the case of 4x20-mesh material, separation was effected in 15 to 30 sec; with -10-mesh feed, separation required about 1 to 2 min. SPECIAL EQUIPMENT Since heavy liquids are toxic to varying degrees, all separatory work was carried out in a standard laboratory fume hood. It was noted that complete removal of fumes was not being effected; therefore the hood construction was modified, resulting in a completely satisfactory arrangement for heavy liquid test work. In the interest of safety, details of this fume hood are reported here. Unlike most fumes, heavy liquid fumes tend to settle and flow like water, rather than to rise like a gas. Working on this assumption, a standard water drain was installed in the hood. Across the front of the hood a 1-in. barrier was constructed. In the rear of the hood a false back was installed, with an adjustable sliding door on both the bottom and top of this panel. As shown in Fig. 1, the exhaust fan pulled a vacuum behind the barrier, sucking the heavy fumes from the bottom of the hood. Another addition was the drying box, shown to the right of the hood. This is simply a box covered on top with hardware cloth and connected by a 6-in. inlet to the hood. Sample trays made of fine mesh wire filter screens were found ideal for drying samples. The Yabulu Nickel Refinery commissioned in 1974, processes lateritic ore via a modified Caron process to produce high quality nickel and cobalt products. The Greenvale orebody provided the sole source of feed to the plant until 1990 and with well-blended mineralogy, it resulted in stable and predictable plant performance, allowing the operating focus to be on reducing energy consumption and increasing ore throughput. This approach provided better economics than pursuing increased reduction efficiency. From 1990, increasing quantities of lateritic ore were imported from Indonesia, Philippines and New Caledonia. This introduced considerable variation in ore blends and instability in plant operation but also provided the opportunity to treat higher grade ore blends which yielded higher reduction efficiencies. Ore reduction is conducted using 12 Herreshoff multiple hearth reduction furnaces, using heavy fuel oil as reductant. The æROASTERÆ Project was approved in November 2000 with the primary objective of improving Nickel reduction efficiency by: Stabilising Roaster Operation via a structured program including focused maintenance efforts, capital equipment upgrades, new process measurements, process re-design and improvements to operating skills and process troubleshooting. A structured technical program including laboratory and plant studies using one plant furnace as a pilot unit to develop improved knowledge of how the reduction process proceeds in the Herreshoff furnace. Armed with this knowledge, optimised process conditions and a reduction process model were developed contributing to a significant demonstrated reduction efficiency improvement. Technical input to the project was provided by QNI with Hatch providing the engineering and project management for the $8.5 M capital work. Execution of the work included extensive consultation with the plant operators and close cooperation between the Hatch project team and QNI operations personnel ensuring installations were completed with minimal production disruption. A strong focus on safety management resulted in a number of brownfields project relevant safety initiatives being implemented resulting in project completion without a serious injury.

The Morobe Province of central Papua New Guinea (PNG) has been mined for gold for nearly a century, although it is only in the past decade that large-scale modern mining commenced. The Hidden Valley gold-silver project began construction in mid-2006 and production by August 2009, and is located in the mountains above Wau in the headwaters of the Watut River. The mine is owned and operated by the Morobe Mining Joint Venture (MMJV), which also owns the Wafi-Golpu project, comprising the Wafi gold deposit and Golpu copper-gold deposit, situated in the Watut River Valley. Together they represent a potential mine of the scale of Ok Tedi or Bougainville or bigger. The MMJV is owned in equal shares by Newcrest Mining from Australia and Harmony Gold from South Africa. Although Hidden Valley was the first large-scale mine in PNG to engineer and build a tailings storage facility, poor environmental management during construction and early operations led to significant erosion of waste rock and sedimentation impacts throughout the ~200 km length of the Watut River. Since then, substantial efforts have been made to improve environmental management, especially waste rock placement and storage and water quality management. While the impacts from the Hidden Valley project appear to be reducing, the saga has heightened concerns by many along the Watut River and across PNG about ongoing impacts from mining.This paper presents the results of an ongoing project in the Morobe Province conducted by the Mineral Policy Institute examining the historical, current and future impacts of mining, including community views, social and environmental impacts and the monitoring and regulation of mining. Overall, there is a clear need to more fully integrate social and environmental issues into life-of-mine planning and go above and beyond regulatory requirements. In this way, some of the lessons learnt – by the community, MMJV and government – can be incorporated before, during and long after mining.CITATION:Mudd, G M and Roche, C, ?2014. Universities have education as their primary purpose. This appears to be an innocuous statement with simple meaning. In an age of conflicting semantics, however, cords and meanings are often lost or changed. The term education is often broadly expanded to encompass any form of learning process, or the accumulation of knowledge, and even to the beneficial application of knowledge to man's problems, hence one find that education in universities is not solely the formal process of texts, lectures, recitations, and testing by a batch process known as class room teaching. Despite critics of education batch is spelled with an "a", instead of an "o" - at least we hope so If one defines teaching as causing to learn, then the learning objectives may necessitate a variety of approaches within the teaching concept and research is among those favored at the graduate and some undergraduate levels. Research has been among the glamour words and certain fields such as oceanography and space science have had more than their share of glamour. Unfortunately, industrial mineral research has not had the competitive drawing power of enamoring students of the "note" generation in terms of glamorous accomplishment. Research today usually requires sophisticated equipment and such equipment is expensive, both for initial purchase and operation. Metallographic studies of the segregation of solute in and near the surfaces of chill-cast alloys have shown that, under sufficiently severe conditions, nucleation on the cold mold surface is followed by the formation of a disc of solid of the same composition as the liquid. This disc is surrounded by two concentric rings in which the concentration first decreases and then increases. The discs and rings are surrounded by a region in which arms of low solute concentration separate regions of high concentration. These arms start at the periphery of the outer ring and are initially radial; they make a gradual curved transition from the radial direction to a crystallographic direction. A normal dendritic substrcture is established beyond the position at which the arms have become crystallographically aligned. When the cooling is less severe, the disc becomes less irregular in shape and has a concentration minimum at the center. The term "Predendritic" is proposed for these transitions. A qualitative explanation is outlined for the phenomena observed at the surface and in the equiaxed region of the ingots. It is well-established1-' that the normal mode of solidification for alloys under most conditions is dendritic. A characteristic of dendritic solidification is the growth of rods or plates in specific crys-tallographic directions. The remaining liquid solidifies later, usually with a higher concentration of solute than the original liquid. Very little is known, however, about the transition from a crystal nucleus until the dendritic pattern is established. It is clear that there must be a transition because the nucleus is much smaller than the characteristic spacings found in the "steady-state" structure. And it also seems clear that the initial conditions must be important since the undercooling existing during the nucleation of the grains has a remarkable influence upon the grain size4 and the segregation pattern. The present paper reports a study of the micro-segregation in regions where crystals have nucleated, and the conclusions that can be drawn regarding the early stages of growth, in connection with the details of the solidification process. Aluminum of 99.993 purity, A1-Cu alloys containing 0.5 to 20 wt pct Cu, and Pb-Sn alloys with 5 wt pct Sn were cast and examined metallographically at the as-cast surface, close to the surface, and in the interior after casting. The alloys were cast from controlled temperatures against surfaces at different temperatures ranging from room temperature to approximately the liquidus temperature of the alloy. The surfaces were, in various experiments, graphite, stainless steel, copper, and aluminum. The methods used for metallographic examination were as follows. 1) The Nomarski phase contrast interferometer6 was used to obtain information on the topography of the as-cast surface. 2) The distribution of any solute present in A1 99.993 pct and copper in the A1-Cu alloys was studied by the anodic film technique originated by Lacombe and Mouflard7 and previously applied in the study of the solidification of aluminum by Biloni.8 The electropolished surface of the specimen is anodized under controlled conditions so that the thickness of the oxide film and therefore the interference colors under white light are sensitive to the local composition. This technique was applied to the as-cast surfaces and to metallographically prepared surfaces from the interior. 3) If in Al-Cu alloys, the surface is anodically oxidized for several minutes, instead of seconds as in the color-film technique, the copper segregation is outlined by a different level with respect to the matrix. This method is less sensitive but complementary to that for the color films. 4) The distribution of copper revealed and mapped by the metallographic techniques was confirmed by electron probe. 5) In samples with high concentration of copper, evidence for the copper distribution could be seen optically after electropolishing.

The problems presented by old mine workings affect both present day mining and land development. An automated method of locating these old mines from the surface using electrical resistivity techniques was de-veloped earlier under a Bureau of Mines contract. Subsequent Bureau research has refined the techniques and expanded the area of study to a variety of geologic provinces. During this research, six mining areas in the United States were in-vestigated with the Bureau's automated resistivity method. This report describes the mining areas involved and the results of the resistivity investigations, which showed a high rate of success in detecting old mines. It also describes the field measurement techniques and data analysis procedures.

OF all the zinc that the world consumed in 1936-'38 the United States took about 31 per cent, and almost 14 per cent of the world's zinc supply in that period was used for galvanizing purposes in the United States. Further examination of the statistics shows that about 71/2 per cent (147,500 tons in 1939) of the world zinc consumption goes into the galvanizing of sheets in the United States, which is what I am going to talk about in this paper. There is nothing especially new about galvanizing; in every year since 1921 somewhere between 41 and 49 per cent of the country's zinc consumption has been used for this purpose, and yet few people not specialists in its manufacture know much about how it is made. You take an iron or steel sheet and dip it in molten zinc and there you have a galvanized sheet-that about epitomizes popular knowledge of the subject even among engineers.

Lake Dufault Mines, Limited, is located ten miles north of Noranda, Quebec, Canada. Following discovery of a copper-zinc orebody late in 1961, metallurgical investigations of diamond drill core were conducted by Lakefield Research Limited during 1962 and 1963. These were followed by pilot-plant tests in May and June of 1964, utilizing underground development ore. Milling operations commenced on August 16, 1964, and reached rated capacity of 1300 tpd by October 1, 1964. Since that time, tonnage was gradually increased to a maximum of 1400 tpd and since January 1, 1968, gradually decreased to the present rate of 1100 tpd due to an increase in the hardness of the ore. The ore milled from start-up until January 1968, was mainly massive sulfides, consisting of a complex mixture of iron, Copper, zinc, and minor amounts of lead sulfides with important associated values in gold, silver and cadmium (average specific gravity of 3-8). From January 1968 until the present, the ore being processed is described geologically as a boxwork of sulfide stringers of chalcopyrite, pyrite, and pyrrhotite with some local dissemination in siliceous rhyolite (average specific gravity 2.9) supplemented by the massive copper-zinc ore. The following notes have been compiled more for the reason that the district is little known to the outside world for its gold production, than for the hope of giving valuable information. The district of Canutillo lies about 15 miles south of the city of Freirina (1at. 28' 50' S. long. 70" 75' W.), and contains nine principal veins, all within a radius of a mile; 50 or more claims have been located on these veins, and this paper refers chiefly to those belonging to the Anglo-Chilean Exploration Go., Ltd., on which the greater part of the development work has been done. In all probability the mines were first worked by the Incas, who, under Tupac Yupangui, captured the country as far south as the Mauli river, between the years 1430 and 1470, and imposed a yearly tribut,e of gold and copper, which was forwarded by carriers on foot to Cuzco, the Inca capital in Peru. In the year 1535, soon after the time of the Spanish conquest, the stories of these consignments, together with those of supposed precious stones, led Diego de Almargro with a band of 400 soldiers to explore as far south as the Incas had gone, in the hope of finding the source of the precious metal, which he believed to have come from some definite point instead of being, as was afterwards proved, the collection of innumerable districts scattered over the entire length of the country. The method of winning the gold used by the Incas or by the natives whom they forced to work seems to have consisted in removing the ore by hard-wood wedges driven by stone-hammers, while a human shoulder-blade worn along its rounded edge, found in one of the mines, had evidently done duty to its second owner as a scraper or shovel. The stored energy of cold work was investigated in drawn gold-silver wires by tin-solution calorimetry as a function of strain, strain rate, initial grain size, and temperature of defornation. The energy expended in the deformation process was measured. Hardness was also measured and was correlated with the stored energy as a function of strain and strain rate. Mechanisms of energy storage are discussed. THE variables which determine the amount of energy stored in a metal during cold work are of two kinds: those involving the metal and its condition and those involving the process of deformation. For example, the stored energy differs between one metal and another and between different degrees of purity of a single metal. It also depends on the nature of the deformation process and particularly the extent, rate, and temperature of deformation. Most investigators have reported the stored energy as a function of strain (or some similar geometric parameter) or of the energy expended during deformation. In general the stored energy increases with strain, rapidly at first, but more slowly at large strains until a saturation level is reached. Manganese nodule projects were quite fashionable during the 1970s. At the beginning of the 1980s, low metal prices led to an almost complete reduction of such activities; however, the Law of the Sea incited the countries that signed it to build a strategy for this ocean resource. Gemonod was created in France in 1984 with a four-year mission. This paper presents the results of its program devoted to the technical and economic studies of nodule exploitation. A commercial mining system is presented. The nodules would be collected by a self-propelled miner and lifted hydraulically through a rigid pipestring. A complete optimized scenario has been built taking into account offshore mining, ore transfer at sea, transportation and processing to analyze the profitability of the project. Considering an average conservative basis for metal prices, after a deep analysis of the market, the return rate of investment of the project appears fairly interesting. These results are new and are explained in comparison with previous foreign studies. These results must not hide the innovative nature of the project nor the associated risks. This is why a mining pilot is required and has been specified by Gemonod.

Considerable success has been achieved in recent years in reducing concentrations of respirable dust in UK coalmines; thankfully this has been reflected in significant improvements in pneumoconiosis statistics. However, continuous increases in mechanisation and in rates of working, accompanied by more stringent dust regulations, necessitate the introduction of improved and often more sophisticated methods of dust control. The increased application of exhaust ventilation and air cleaning techniques seems likely to be the most important step forward in dust control in coalmining during the next few years. A typical drivage in a UK mine is not more than 16 ft (5 m) wide and is supported by steel arches. In the past the majority of such roadways were driven by the conventional means of blasting and loading. Since the main purpose of ventilation was to clear blasting fumes and to provide adequate scouring of firedamp, not surprisingly it was usual to have 'forcing' ventilation. Present systems of operation are making increasing use of heading machines and it is not surprising that well over half of all drivages are now ventilated by exhausting methods. (1) The great majority of coal getting in the UK is from longwall faces, usually in seams of less than 6 ft (1.8 m) thickness. Although this method of min¬ing has many advantages in terms of safety and productivity, dust control is made more difficult because of the need for men and machines to work in the same ventilation stream. Much emphasis has been placed on improving the design and methods of opera¬tion of longwall machines to reduce dust production, and improved ventilation has provided greater dilution, and in consequence, reductions in dust concentration. On all machines water is now fed through internal galleries to the cutting elements. Unfortunately, one of the difficulties associated with mining thin seams is that there is some unavoidable cutting in the roof or floor and in many seams there are faults to be traversed and dirt bands which must be removed with the coal. Under these conditions it appears that the use of exhaust ventilation and air cleaning offers the most promising way of achieving satisfactory dust conditions.

The Mine Accident, Injury, Illness and Employment Database at the Mine Safety and Health Administration's Health and Safety Analysis Center is a computerized system that stores accident, injury, illness and employment data about all coal and metal/nonmetal mines in the United States. The paper discusses the system for collecting, storing, analyzing, and reporting this information and how these data are used in the ongoing effort to increase the health and safety in this nation's mines.

Magnetic data was collected from the Yeoju historical sites using the fluxgate gradiometer through six sites & several grids. We measured the vertical gradient by the FM256 Fluxgate gradiometer. The readings were logged every half meter. The obtained data were processed and treated to introduce a high quality magnetic image. The gradiometer results defined various positive and negative magnetic anomalies, which revealed the existence of several archaeological features of different shapes and sizes. The study of the process magnetic images give us a concept that the subsurface features are caved shape stone chamber tombs, burial mounds, deep room structure, Yeoju mausoleum, pagoda?s square foundation stones, walls etc. All these are superior work of early Goguryeo inheriting orthodox Silla style. So, the study area may have great archeological interest.

In 1988, at the request of members of the Society for Mining, Metallurgy, and Exploration (SME) Inc., the president of SME formed Working Party No. 79, Ore Reserve Definition. Its mission was to develop guidelines for the public reporting of exploration information, resources and reserves. These guidelines were published in the April 1991 issue of Mining Engineering,(pp. 379-384), and as a document entitled "A Guide for Reporting Exploration Information, continued on an ad-hoc basis until 1996. Although the Stamler feeder/breaker has been used for coal crushing in underground mines for many years, it has only recently been applied to other crushing operations. Two companies presently using Stamler feeder/breakers for rock crushing were contacted regarding their experiences with the units in actual field use. In both cases information was obtained directly from the individuals responsible for field operation and maintenance of the units. White Pine Copper Co. has been using Stamler feeder/breakers for over two years to crush copper ore. They now have fourteen 450-ton-per-hour units on line. The ore has a compressive strength of from 18,000 to 28,000 psi and is extremely abrasive. Maintenance is performed on a tonnage basis. The breaker shaft is replaced every 250,000 tons (requiring about 4 hrs) and picks are replaced about every 1500 tons by the operator (requiring about 2 min per pick). Very little unscheduled maintenance has been required. Crushing costs are fairly high (estimated at 13 to 15t per ton including maintenance and operation) because of tale extreme abrasiveness of the material. A new Stamler feeder/breaker with Ultramet wear surfaces was put or line in June 1976. Ultramet was found to increase the life of belt transfer station surfaces by up to 400 percent and it is hoped that it will do the same for the feeder/breaker. At this time it is still too early to evaluate the performance of the Ultramet unit. If it does improve abrasion resistance, crushing costs could be greatly reduced. White Pine is very pleased with the units and the service provided by Stamler.

The magneto-hydrostatic method can be used today to separate slightly magnetic or non-magnetic particles according to differences in their specific gravities and magnetic susceptibilities. The classical approach is to effect stratification prior to separation. This paper discusses some of the significant parameters which bear on the design and pattern of the expected stratification in the separation cell. As the characteristics of the magnetic field, and consequently those of the magnetic forces, are determined by the geometry of the poles, this subject is treated first. In this context a new approach, whereby the range of stratification is extended, using positive as well as negative gradients, is presented. Finally, the effect of the relative size and shape of the particles on stratification is discussed.

GENERAL Broken Hill lies at latitude 31º58'S longitude 141º27'E on the semi-arid western plains of New South Wales. From discovery in 1883 until the end of 1969 the lead-silver-zinc orebody has yielded 107,570,000 tons of ore for an overall grade of 13.1% Pb, 6.9 oz Ag/ton and 9.4% Zn.* The orebody currently supports the activities of four mines which are, from north to south, North Broken Hill Limited, Broken Hill South Limited, The Zinc Corporation, Limited and New Broken Hill Consolidated Limited. It is estimated that in 1969 these mines produced about 8 ½ % of world lead production and about 6% of world zinc production. In 1905 The Zinc Corporation, Limited was founded to recover zinc from tailings dumps and moved into mining in 1911 on leases purchased from Broken Hill South Limited at the then southern extremity of the "line of lode". New Broken Hill Consolidated Limited was formed in 1936 to explore and mine for deep ore in the leases to the south of The Zinc Corporation which were purchased from Barrier South Limited. The Zinc Corporation, Limited and New Broken Hill Consolidated Limited mines are both managed by Conzinc Riotinto of Australia Limited, which wholly owns The Zinc Corporation, Limited and has a 32% interest in New Broken Hill Consolidated Limited. * Throughout this paper tons referred to are long tons of 2,240 lbs.
