THERE are SO many conditions affecting blast-furnace results that it is hard to get satisfactory comparative data on the working of two furnaces, and much more difficult to get comparable results from the use of two entirely different fuels. The several advantages of charcoal over coke as a blast-furnace fuel have doubtless been apparent to many managers; but probably the conditions for comparative tests of the two were never so favorable as during the year 1905, at the works of the Algoma Steel Co., Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario, which comprise two modern blast-furnaces, well equipped, though of comparatively small capacity. For four consecutive months one of these furnaces was run with charcoal and the other with coke. Then the charcoal-furnace ran for a while with part charcoal and part coke; and, still later, with coke only. The ore-mixtures were about the same in the two furnaces, and, of course, all the climatic conditions were identical. The dimensions of the two furnaces, and their work with the different fuels, are given in Table I.

A pilot scale study was performed to evaluate the potential for gravity concentration of gold from -13 mm (-1/2"), crushed ore from Ester Dome, Alaska. 9.04 tonnes (9.94 tons) of crushed ore were sampled and processed through a Pan-American jig -Wifley table pilot plant. Plant products were sampled for assay and material balance calculations. Gold recovery through one stage of jigging and two stages of tabling was 17.4% at a concentration ratio of 615:1. Concentrate grade was 766.3 g/tonne (22.4 oz/ton). The feed grade to the plant was calculated at 1.71 g/tonne (0.050z/ton). Jig tailings, primary table tailings and secondary table tailings grades were 1.44 g/tonne (0.042), 1.30 g/tonne (0.038), and 5.47 g/tonne (0.16 oz/ton) respectively. Significant, coarse, free milling gold values were shown to remain in the jig tailings. Concentrate mineralogy is discussed.

"Tumbler Ridge, Canada's newest resource community, has been developed differently than have been other resource communities.Since its conceptualization, emphasis has been placed on the establishment of a traditional municipal government at early a stage as possible.Planning f or the community goes back to 1977. By then, extensive study by provincial agencies had shown a new resource town would be required to exploit north east coal. The Ministry of Municipal Affairs, in conjunction with a consultant named R.A. Rabnett began the extensive Tumbler Ridge conceptual plan.The results of the conceptual plan are evident in the organizational and planning goals of Tumbler Ridge. In every aspect from the election of officials to some financial matters, the town functions as a normal municipality. With the resource companies of the North East Coal Development within its municipal boundaries. Tumbler Ridge has been able to debenture its capital projects against its municipal tax base.The town's ability to function as a normal municipality is enhanced by its control over Crown land it has purchased from the province. This gives it further control over the development of the community and helps in establishing agreements with the resource companies and the provincial government to ensure that housing and service needs are met. While resource company representatives sit on certain municipal committees, their roles are advisory in nature.The community continues to move toward full municipal status and will have a fully elected Council by 1986.BackgroundPlanning for the development of northeast British Columbia coal resources began in 1976 under the aegis of the provincial Cabinet Committee on Coal Development. A series of subcommittees were established including a Townsite/Community Development subcommittee. The Ministry of Municipal Affairs chaired this subcommittee and continued as the lead agency for the provincial settlement planning effort over the period 1976 to 1981."

The N1 Porto tunnel project is a 650m segment of large-scale civil engineering plan to improve traffic flow between Porto’s downtown district, the Santo Antonio hospital district and the highway access. The tunnel is being excavated into a massive “Granito do Porto” granite structure, 4 – 20m below a highly urbanized environment of Porto, Portugal. The project was originally started in 2000 and was stopped due to the inability to mechanically excavate the granite rock. The city of Porto engineers then turned to traditional drilling and blasting techniques. The use of pyrotechnical delay detonators did not easily comply with the specified environmental and safety requirements concerning blast charging, firing and vibration control resulting in the process taking far too much time. The introduction of digital blasting was proposed to overcome these concerns.

This report discusses the nonfuel critical minerals position of the United States-both current and future (to the year 2000). We have assumed that there will be no major global disturbances-military, political, or economic-during the rest of this century. However, international relationships, strategies, and conditions that affect the supply of minerals are very tenuous, normal trading patterns can be easily upset, and national and ideological objectives can and do interfere with "normal" free market conditions. For example, the Department of Defense has reported that the Soviet Union is engaged in a strategy designed to reduce the availability of strategic minerals, through either physical disruption, market manipulation, or domination of producing or neighboring states. Although such a strategy poses serious concerns for the United States and the free world, the impacts of disruptions are not covered in this publication. Historical Perspective The modern industrial economy of the United States is founded on the production and use of minerals.* Two hundred years ago our forebears began taming a raw continent, developing a base for agriculture and a rudimentary minerals producing system. In the 19th century, with the aid of imported labor and capital, the development of America's vast natural resources was undertaken, and the transition from an agricultural to industrial society was underway. By the century's close, the United States had emerged as a great industrial power, partly through the development of such mineral resources as iron in Minnesota and coal in Pennsylvania.

In this review paper the effect of composition and temperature on electrical conductivity and viscosity of the slags encountered in electric smelting of PGM-containing sulfide concentrates is described along with their liquidus temperatures. Optimization of slag composition is attempted on the basis of opposite trends of viscosity and electrical conductivity. Metal losses to slag, matte-slag separation and matte settling are also discussed in conjunction with interfacial and surface tension concepts. The electrode immersed in the slag phase is the main factor in the design and operation of the furnace. The most important electrode parameters are the size and the positioning in the slag phase which are determined by the slag resistivity, furnace resistance, cell constant and power input. The flow of heat generated by the electrode current determines the energy distribution and furnace dimensions creating viscosity profiles within the slag phase which in turn affects the flow conditions. Thus the flow of slag is discussed together with furnace geometry, stirring action, buoyancy and electromagnetic effects and the action of the electric furnace as a settler is emphasized. A discussion on the design d production capacity of the furnace is provided which are based on considerations derived mainly from slag properties.

"The present study is concerned with investigating the effect of chemical treatment on enhancing the HCl absorption capacities of coal burnt ash and slag. It was found that the HCl absorption capacity of coal burnt ash discharged from fluidized bed combustor was improved by hydration with water and 5% polyethylene glycol solution. This phenomenon was based on an increase of the specific surface area of treated coal burnt ash. The HCl absorption capacity of hydrated ash with polyethylene glycol solution was almost equivalent to that of standard CaO and Ca(OH)2. In particular, the specific surface area of hydrated ash with polyethylene glycol solution was found to be 19 m2/g, which was more than over eight times larger than that of raw sample. Hydrated slag treated with lON sodium hydroxide solution also showed high HCl absorption capacity, with highly improved surface area. It was found that the absorption capacity of slag for HCl depended on the treatment time, showing the maximum absorption capacity for 12 hours of hydration treatment.IntroductionA large amount of coal burnt ash, slag and dust are discharged from such industrial processes as coal combustion and metal refinery etc., and it becomes an serious problem to recover and diminish these solid wastes because of the shortage of dump sites and subsequent metal elution to the environment. Figure 1 shows the present situation of reutilization of coal burnt ash and slag in Japan [1,2]. It is shown in this figure that these solid wastes are recycled as materials in the fields of earthwork, agriculture and forestry etc. A part of these solid wastes, however, is still dumped to landfill. To decrease this dumped amount, the development of environmentally friendly reutilization technique for these solid wastes is of great importance."

The Boddington Gold Mine, operated by Worsley Alumina Pty Ltd, is located about 100 km south of Perth and is one of the largest-producing gold mines in Australia.Multiple open pits are planned and several extend below the water table, through the deeply weathered lateritic profile and into the underlying Archean bedrock. Groundwater related mining problems, such as poor trafficability, wet floor conditions and slope instability began to occur early in 1990.The mine is located within Archean greenstones which are steeply dipping and faulted. Rock types include mafic to felsic volcanics, pyroclastics and sediments. These rocks have been regionally deformed and metamorphosed and are intruded by quartz micro-diorites and post-mineralisation dolerite dykes. Deep weathering has produced a typical oxide profile consisting of laterite, clay and saprolite zones underlain by weathered to fresh bedrock.

THIS paper is not a treatise on the theory and practice of magnetic surveying. It merely presents a diagram upon which have been plotted observations taken with the simplest form of magnetic instrument, the lowly dip needle, over a large area astride the Lake Superior syncline of northern Wisconsin. The exposures of the underlying formations are not sufficiently great in number nor fortunate in distribution to have provided the fuller understanding of the geology which has been secured by the use of the magnetic observations as an auxiliary tool or accessory in the hands of the geologist. The diagram (Fig. 2) in large part speaks for itself if studied in connection with the geological map (Fig. 1) for which it is the main control. It is presented to demonstrate the extent to which the use of such methods may aid in the solution of geological problems in a covered country. The diagram is probably unique in assembling the expression of such a wide range of formations, affected by so wide a range of secondary processes, and deformed by so many different structures in terms of magnetic variation. Few geologists outside of the Lake Superior country have had any first-hand experience in the taking of magnetic observations and the interpretations of the results in terms of geological conditions; nor have the Lake Superior men gone with the methods far afield from the mere tracing of iron formations. In more recent years the oil companies have gone heavily into investments in magnetometers, balances, and dip needles in the quest of concealed structural anomalies which are the favorable loci of petroleum accumulation. But these geophysicists come back from the fields with their collections of observations facing the question of interpreting the geological meaning of their magnetic anomalies.

This discussion of accounting will describe the statements and the information that the accounting system produces, from the point of view of those who use such systems rather than of those who prepare them and who do the detail and technical accounting work. In any well organized mine, quarry, or other enterprise exploiting a mineral deposit, no matter how small, some clerical and accounting work must be done. Miners and other employes must be paid, supplies must be purchased and issued, and various tax and information returns, which even the smallest enterprise must file, have to be prepared. In this chapter it is assumed that the enterprise has employes of this type and that they understand the fundamentals of record keeping and accounting. It would be impossible here to give sufficiently full explanations to enable a man with no previous clerical and accounting training to set up and operate an accounting and cost system for even the simplest extractive operation. Rather, we shall hope first, to tell the investor and the operator, from the chief engineer or president down to a subforeman, what to expect from the accounting statements and records and how to use this information in his daily work; and second, that it will enable the man with some knowledge of accounting or bookkeeping, but with little or no experience in any extractive industry, to set up and operate a satisfactory system for a mine or other extractive enterprise. For readers who wish to go further, the bibliography at the end of this chapter contains many references. The emphasis has, therefore, been placed on the statements to be produced and the purposes for which they are to be used rather than the underlying books and records. These are, with a few exceptions which will be described later, essentially what might be found in any industrial enterprise and would probably, in the extremely small enterprise, consist of handwritten journals, ledgers, analysis books, payroll books, and stores ledgers. In the larger enterprise, various types of mechanical accounting would be introduced in proportion to the complexity of the operation.

The vast coal resources of North Slope, Alaska, can be expected to attract substantial interest because the nearly flat-lying coal beds of the coastal plain are specially amenable to surface mining. Mining on a scale large enough to justify coal development in this area could have severe environmental effects. The mitigation would be uncertain because large-scale coal mining and reclamation operations have not been carried out in the arctic. The deficiency of the scientific data base is another factor that requires consideration if coal mining has to develop in accordance with the objectives of PL 95-87. The objective of this paper is to establish the inter-relationship between the problems due to permafrost and factors in reclamation of post-mining land in order to find ways to transform nature in a rational and purposeful manner and to suggest specific reclamation approaches that may be appropriate in this region.

Stacking fault energies and annealing twin frequencies have been measured for austenitic stainless steels having a) constant 20 wt pct Cr and varying nickel contents, and b) constant 20 wt pct Ni and varying chromium contents. The effect of nitrogen has also been studied and, to a lesser extent, so has the effect of carbon. All measured stacking fault energies plot linearly against the corresponding annealing twin frequencies, suggesting that, for constant prior deformation and grain size, twinning frequency can be used to estimate stacking fault energy. Compositions low in nickel possess the lowest fault energy, while the maximum fault energy within the investigated composition range occurs mound 20 pct Cr-20 pct Ni. Nitrogen has practically no effect on stacking fault energy when increased from 0.005 to 0.05 wt pct, although Planar dislocation glide is associated with higher nitrogen contents; this may be a short-range order effect. Carbon may raise the stacking fault energy a little, and causes pronounced dislocation tangling in deformed alloys. The basically different dislocation structures promoted by nitrogen and carbon, respectively, are not associated with large variations in stacking fault energy, and the reason for the difference remains unknown. INTEREST in the dislocation configurations developed in plastically deformed alloys arises principally from a desire for an understanding of mechanisms of plastic deformation and fracture. Comparatively little basic work has been concerned with austenitic stainless steels, although considerable interest has developed in the fundamental aspects of deformation of these alloys since the suggestion that those compositions deforming essentially by planar glide are particularly prone to transgranular stress corrosion cracking.' Certain facts are well-established. An 18 Cr-8 Ni steel (type 304) has a low stacking fault energy which is increased by higher nickel contents, and the structure of these steels when moderately plastically deformed changes concomitantly from planar to less planar to distinctly tangled dislocation configurations. These changes are thought to relate to changes in stacking fault energy, and considerable effort has been expended in measuring stacking fault energies of austenitic stainless steels through the determination of node curvatures2"4 even though the method has limitations due to formula approximations,5 an upper limit of measurement of 50 erg cm-2 at the most,5 and the necessity of an extremely meticulous experimental technique. Therefore, it is not surprising that only qualitative agreement between different investigators is generally to be found.'-' At high energies where node radius measurements are inappropriate, some use has been made of annealing twin frequencies to estimate relative stacking fault energies, although a recent critical evaluation of the method suggests that it should be used cautionsly with due regard to effects of grain size and prior deformation.6 Finally, there is a question as to whether the structures of some deformed steels are due to ordering effects. In particular, the role of nitrogen in promoting planar dislocation motion has been suggested to be due to ordering,' but similar suggestions have been made for steels having low interstitial contents.4 EXPERIMENTAL Small ingots of austenitic stainless steels (-50 g) were prepared from components exceeding 99.99 pct purity, the nickel and chromium being Johnson Matthey "Specpure" metals. Carbon was added as pure graphite, and nitrogen as CrN. The components were accurately weighed, and it was assumed that the final composition was the same as the nominal composition

THE Hazleton district of the Pennsylvania Anthracite Region will be the scene Oct. 14 and 15 of the fall meeting of the Coal Division and the Pennsylvania Anthracite Section. Here, coal mining has been active for more than 100 years and hereabouts industrial necessity inspired the numerous inventions of the Pardees, Eckley B. Coxe, a former A.I.M.E. president, and the Marltles, who contributed much to the success of the Institute in its early days, as well as to the upbuilding of modern methods in the anthracite and bituminous industries. Headquarters will be the Altamont Hotel, Hazleton, Pa. There will be two technical sessions Friday, registration preceding the first which is scheduled for 11 a.m. to 1 p. m. The second will be called at 2:30 p.m. Saturday is reserved for mine and plant visits, with golf and tennis after luncheon for those so inclined. The ladies are cordially invited to the meeting and arrangements have been made for their participation in much of the program. The chairmen of the committees preparing for the meeting are: Donald Markle, president, Jeddo-Highland Coal Co., General Committee; R. E. Hobart, mechanical superintendent, Lehigh Navigation Coal. The problem of sulfur control is important in all blast-furnace operations but particularly for certain grades of steel because of the rigorous specifications. During the past decade the tendency has been to produce pig iron and hot metal of lower sulfur content. As most of the sulfur in the iron originates in the fuel, the use of high-sulfur coke demands modifications in practice to meet sulfur specifications. While it is generally known that high temperatures and more basic slags favor desulfurization, operators as a rule produce the most acid slag that will permit proper desulfurization. The viscosity of blastfurnace slag has been thought to be related to desulfurization and has been investigated by Feild and Roysterl, also McCaffery and his associates*, but apparently no systematic effort has been made to determine the relative desulfurizing powers of slags over the range of composition encountered in practice. Development of Testing Method Because slag and metallic iron are immiscible, the desulfurization reaction is heterogeneous, occurring only at the interfaces between slag and metal bodies. In the blast furnace the newly reduced iron, containing FeS, descends through the slag bath probably either as small drops or streams, at the interfaces of which desulfurization occurs. After its descent through the slag the iron collects to form a bath of metal, at the top surface of which desulfurization reaction probably occurs. These two steps have been thought to account for all desulfurization in the blast furnace. Kinney3 found that metal removed from the blast furnace just above the tuyeres contained three to four times as much sulfur as the iron at cast. Gas drainage through surface bore¬holes has been the conventional means of methane control for U.S. longwall gobs. However, these vertical boreholes are becoming so costly, and the surface rights so difficult to obtain, that the Bureau of Mines is developing underground gob gas drainage as an alternate means of methane control for U.S. longwal..ls. Holes are drilled into the roof over the panel and on retreating longwalls, towards the working face from a location inby the face. As the longwall retreats, an increasing portion of the hole inter¬cepts the fracture system over the caved gob. A surface exhauster maintains a vacuum on a pipeline parelleling the panel and draws the methane mixture out of the mine. Auxiliary systems of gob gas drain¬age during longwall mining will be essen¬tial for an increasing number of coal mines. Deep and gassy mines often find ventilation insufficient for adequate dilution of methane in bleeder entries. Although this cross-measure method of degasification has been used successfully in Europe, some of the European tech¬niques cannot be directly applied to U.S. mines. This is the first study of its kind in this country.

Data from about 3200 drill holes in the offshore area at Nome, Alaska was digitized and processed. Most drill hole files have associated lithology, gold value, and blow count descriptions for each drill hole. The gold intensity was used to present the potential gold resource in the study area on the world wide web. A web page was created that gives background information on the project, descriptions about the Nome area, maps of the claim blocks that include all the normalized slices of gold deposits, and links to other relevant sites on the web. An experimental investigation of miscible fluid displacement has been made in linear porous media under highly adverse mobility ratio conditions. Various refined oils were displaced at field rates by liquid propane in both horizontal and vertical models 9 to 36 ft in length. In horizontal tests, mixed zones or transition zones form between the two liquids early in the displace-lents. Initially, the zones grow rapidly. III 2-in. diameter models, the mixed regions become nearly stable zones from 6- to 20-ft long. From then on these quasi-stable zones apparently grow only by molecular diffusion. The lenghts of the quasi-stable zones appear to be almost independent of the core material in which displacement;; are made and increase with increasing rates of injection and oil/solvent viscosity ratios. The lengths of the quasi-stable zones. measured in 2-in. diameter models at viscosity ratios and injection rates anticipated in the field indicate that essentially piston-like displacements of oil by solvent would occur. However, the mixed zone lengths increase markedly as the model diameter increases. In vertical displacements controlled by gravity drainage, only short trans-sition zones form. The entire lenghts of these zones can be accounted for by molecular diffusion. Therefore, in reservoirs having characteristics allowing a high degree of gravity drainage, nearly complete oil recovery should be attainable by miscible fluid displacement. INTRODUCTION The oil industry is faced with an ever increasing cost for finding new oil reservoirs. This, coupled with the fact that conventional methods of oil recovery usually leave from 1 to 3 bbl of oil in the ground for every barrel produced, has aroused considerable interest in developing more efficient methods. An integral part of the mechanism of many of these new methods of recovery is a miscible fluid displacement in which oil is displaced by a much less viscous materiai such as liquid propane. A numher of irlvestigators have explored the mechanics of miscible fluid displace-ment,'.2.1.'."." but in the experiments reported many of the important factors have been varied only over a limited range far removed from norma1 oilfield values. This paper presents the results of an experimental study of oil displacement by liquid propane at field rates from linear, natural-sandstone models of various sizes. Both horizontal and vertical flow tests were made. EXPERIMENTAL APPARATUS AND PROCEDURE Refined oils with viscosities varying over a wide range were displaced at several rates by liquid Propane from both horizontal and vertical flow systems. The behavior of the displacement was observed by propane-oil analyses of the effluent and, when possible, by differential pressure measurements along the cores. A schematic flow diagram of the apParatus used to conduct the experirents is shown in Fig. 1. The cores used in the tests were 9-ft lengths cut from natural consolidated sandstone and turned to the desired diameter. These were cast in steel tubing with a low melting point (160°F) alloy which expands on solidification. Flanges welded to the ends of the steel pipes permitted sealing the ends or butting one core to another. Pressure seals were maintained with O-rings. The cores were cleaned by flushing
