"Prairie Evaporites of the Province of Saskatchewan in a deep oil-well hole. Exploitation started in 1950 under a shroud of doubt that this huge reserve could be mined. It was fraught with almost insurmountable physical problems in penetrating the Prairie Evaporites. After 12 years of experimentation and development of new shaft-sinking methods, mining equipment and processes to treat the high-grade potash ore (sylvanite), a new era of high-risk resource development dawned in Saskatchewan.The development of 10 new mines opened up the largest known mineable potash reserves in the world and Canada became the second largest. producer of potash to supply domestic (U.S.A. and Canada) and overseas markets. A monumental program in marketing-devising new transportation systems and strategically locating warehouses-was developed in order to expeditiously service domestic and overseas customers. The year 1969/70 started a period of overcapacity and the problem of prorationing. As the market strengthened in 1974, the Saskatchewan Government applied the reserve tax to the industry. Then, they announced the setting up of a Crown corporation to acquire ownership by purchase of up to fifty per cent of the industry. During this time, potash was discovered in New Brunswick within 50 to 60 miles of a seaport, where two deposits have been explored by the same pioneers who started the potash development in Saskatchewan.With this background, the paper will examine various elements of the economics and marketing of Canadian potash."

The Grootegeluk coal-processing plant treats 3 kt of raw coal per hour to produce a middlings fuel coal and a coking coal fraction with ash contents of 35 and 10 per cent respectively. The plus 0,5 mm fraction is treated by heavy-medium processes, the final top size of the coal being 15 mm. About 400 t of minus 0,5 mm coal per hour is subjected to froth flotation. The routes originally considered for the processing of this fine coal were froth flotation, shaking tables, heavy-medium cyclones, and water only cyclones in combination with froth flotation. The results from tests on the fines arising from a small-trial open-cast mine are discussed. When the froth flotation route was decided upon, further tests were conducted on the selection of the equipment most suited to the particular requirements of this coal and the rest of the plant. Tests using different types of flotation cells and dewatering equipment are discussed. During the commissioning, several operational problems were encountered, and the work done to find the best solutions is discussed.

The proposed technology of antimony calcine processing includes ferrochloride leaching of calcine, reducing solutions, hydrolysis of hydrochloride solutions with antimony oxochloride isolation, synthesis of antimony trioxide by SbOCl neutralization and its drying, regeneration of hydrolysis solutions. The optimum parameters of separate stage of process has been determined and the chemical character of process has been given. During the leaching of calcine we succeeded to transfer 92.16- 95.66% antimony to solution. On the worked out sheme we attained recovery of antimony to antimony trioxide near 90 .5% Antimony triozide contains 99.5% Sb2O3. The composition of sinter burdens for pigments preparation "Naples Yellow" different colours from brightly-yellow, yellow and lightly yellow has been proposed. Three-sulfuretted antimony-antimonic cinnabar have been prepared by precipitation of antimony solutions by potassium sulfur-bearing solution. The prepared compounds correspond to inorganic pigments for artistic paint. The amorphous antimony-ferrous black we prepared by aluminium cementation of hydrochloric antimony solutions. The ferrous black were used as artistic paints and for coating of metals by antimony.

We investigated about synthesis of Mn-Zn ferrite with spinel structure using sulfuric acid leaching solution of mixed spent zinc-carbon batteries and spent alkaline batteries. The waste batteries were prepared by physical treatment such as crushing, magnetic separation, and screening. After screening, the crushed batteries were separated to +8 mesh and -8 mesh powder. Among these, under 8 mesh powder was selected for leaching test. The leaching test was investigated at 2 M H2SO4, 4 vol.% H2O2, reaction temperature 60 ?, agitation speed 250 rpm, solid/liquid ratio 50 g/ 500 ml, reaction time 1 h. The leaching efficiency of zinc, manganese and iron were 99.0%, 98.9%, 58.5%, respectively. For co-precipitation of zinc, manganese and iron, 5M NaOH solution was used for pH control. Then in order to synthesize Mn-Zn ferrite powder, it was investigated according to reaction temperature, agitation speed and O2 partial pressure. We could synthesize about 20 nm of Mn-Zn ferrite with spinel structure.

In preparing diamond-drill core samples for assay at the Homestake mine, Lead, S. Dak., 5-foot intervals of core are processed through three stages, crushing, grinding, and pulverizing, and portions of the core material are discarded after splitting at each stage of preparation. Then two 1-assay-ton fractions are taken from the pulverized material and assayed. This report investigates alternative methods of sample preparation. The consequences of crushing, grinding, and pulverizing all rather than part of the core are appraised through the statistical analysis of assay results from 118 5-foot intervals of core. Evidently, a substantial improvement in precision at small additional expense is obtained by grinding most or all of the core before splitting. Pulverizing all of the core would be desirable only if doing-so would cost less than assaying five random splits from each interval. Graphs and tables detail appropriate procedures to obtain specified precisions. The experimental design and methods can be applied to similar problems in preparing core and other geological samples.

Recognition of the liquefaction susceptibility of dam embankments has been heightened since the San Fernando Dam near failure incident in 1971. Both the downstream and upstream slopes of dams can be at risk for slope failure that can lead to breaching of the dam during or after a seismic event. Many dams have been remediated by various means such as the installation of stone columns or by excavation and replacement of the liquefaction susceptible material. Recent engineering and technology advances in equipment and materials has shown that construction of shear walls to the appropriate depths and at the right center to center spacing may be an economical alternative to the more traditional methods. Recently, the downstream embankments of at least 4 dams, from South Carolina to California, have been, or in the process of being remediated by the use of shear walls. The method of installation has been either multi-axis Cement Deep Soil Mixing walls or walls constructed by the use of trench excavation under self-hardening slurry. Four case histories of dam remediation are discussed, three by multi-axis paddle auger CDSM equipment one with the use of self hardening slurry trenches.

Some of the geochemical relationships that exist between subsurface fluids and the associated geologic strata in petroleum producing areas of Louisiana have been determined. Samples of petroleum-associated water were obtained from 126 wells in Louisiana that produced from sediments of three geologic ages: Tertiary, Cretaceous, and Jurassic. The samples were trans-ported to a central laboratory for analysis of chemical composition, using standard methods, to determine if the compositions varied with the geologic strata of their source and, if so, why. The dissolved constituents were com-pared with those of a brine that was concentrated by evaporation. The concentrations of bromide, calcium, and strontium were useful in distinguishing the brines produced from sediments of a late age from those of an earlier age. The concentration ratios of Mg' (total equivalent magnesium) and bromide indicated that dolomitization probably had occurred and altered the composition of the brines. A principal-components analysis of the data indicated an inverse relationship between depth and concentrations of bromide, strontium, calcium, and lithium.

Today's coal mines are turning more and more to belt haulage as the key system to transport coal out of the mine. The advantages of using belt for both intermediate and main haulage are numerous. Belts are reliable high capacity haulage mediums that can be utilized at low operating costs. They are adaptable to rolls in the coal seam and can handle relatively steep grades. They are not noisy, operate with a minimum amount of labor, and are easily extended and retracted. Belts require the least power of any haulage medium, are easily controlled by push- buttons and interlocks, and present low fire and safety hazards. Belt haulage can also be the largest source of operational problems for mine management when not installed correctly. This chapter and Chap. 6 concentrate on proper installation of both the static and dynamic components of efficient belt haulage. This chapter looks at the static system component, composed of the belt drive, its installation and operation, as well as belt takeup and transfer point construction. These components do not change readily over the life of the installation, hence the term static system. Chap. 6 discusses the dynamic system of belt line construction, which includes belt splicing, breaking down and reanchoring the tailpiece, and extending the belt line, plus operational and maintenance items for belt operation. This chapter is divided into three major topics. The first is a general discussion covering the points necessary for designing an efficient haulage system; the second looks at installing belt drives, head rollers, and takeups, and the third discussion centers on installing efficient and effective transfer points along the haulage system. Each will address the design and construction issues facing the engineer or construction supervisor in charge of installing the system. Before looking at the static system, it may be useful to review some of the basic design factors and considerations of all belt haulage systems. The material usually carried on an underground belt is a mixture of raw coal and rock, commonly known as run-of-mine (ROM) coal. This mixture has certain material characteristics that guide the mining engineer to the final and proper belt selection. The characteristics looked at most frequently are: 1) Angle of Repose is the angle at which the material will freely make a pile. Most ROM coal averages a 35"-39" angle of repose. 2) Angle of Surcharge is the angle a pile will assume on a moving conveyor. This ranges from 5" to 15" less than the angle of repose in most materials. For ROM coals, 25" is the average angle of surcharge. 3) Flowability, which determines the maxi- mum cross-sectional area needed to carry any given material on a belt. It is measured by the angles of repose and surcharge of a material and also serves as an index of the safe incline angle for the belt line. These characteristics, plus practical engineering research and development work are defined by an organization called the Conveyor Equipment Manufacturers Association (CEMA) for most bulk materials. CEMA also provides a code for each classified material depending on the characteristics above and the subjective considerations of the average size to be encountered, the abrasiveness of the material, and any miscellaneous characteristics (oil resistive, corrosive, etc.) which may be important. To gain some idea of the progress recently made in the measurement of high temperatures, we must review the temperature-measuring devices of the past. As far back as 1782, Wedgewood, a famous potter in England, attempted to measure his, kiln temperatures by means of clay trials, or test pieces, that indicated the expansion or contraction that occurred with certain changes in temperature. He also produced cones off clay, formed of various mixes, to form a whole series for the range of temperature met with, in firing clay products. These cones are still extensively used to measure kiln temperatures in the pottery industry. Cones are affected not only by time but by temperature and the rate, of firing, consequently, they are not an accurate measure of temperature. In addition it has been common practice for years to attempt to measure temperatures with fusible salts. Capsules of these are inserted in the furnace and indicate, by melting; when a certain temperature, has been attained. While' such salts cannot be considered a precision form of temperature-measuring device, they have proved reasonably accurate in checking temperature.

"The interaction of amorphous 1ilica particles with several hydrogen bonding agents (H2O, C2H5OH, C7H2NO) was investigated by monitoring the changes in the bulk and surface IR vibrational modes of silica using photoacoustic spectroscopy. It is argued that the intensity of the silanol band at 3747 cm-1 provides (an inverse) quantitative measure of the interaction or surface groups, along with the shift in the broad hydroxyl band, the interaction following the order C7H2NO > C2H5OH > H2O. Index Headings: Silica; Surface vibrational modes; Photoacoustic spectroscopy; Hydrogen bonding agents.INTRODUCTIONThe use of m spectroscopy to study the adsorption on solid surfaces is well documented in the literature.1 2 For example, hydroxylation of a clean silica surface results in the formation of the free silanol group Si-OH, with a sharp IR band near 3747 cm-1• Further hydroxylation produces a broad band near 3500 cm-1, which is believed to result from various hydrogen-bonded silanol bands leading to a multilayered surface structure of few nm.3-5 Earlier studies had indicated a relationship between the surface silanol band and various chemical activities of silica such as cytotoxicity, 7- 9 catalysis, 10-12 and others.13 Recent studies from our group14-in which the intensity of the silanol band and cytotoxicity of silica, heat-treated at various temperatures up to 1095°C, were investigated have provided a strong correlation between cytotoxicity and intensity of the silanol band.Coating of silica by PVPNO (polyvinyl-2-pyridine N-oxide with the empirical formula C7H8NO), a strong hydrogen bonding agent, is known to reduce the cytotoxicity of silica, presumably by chemically blocking the silanol groups from phospholipids.15 This interaction of the hydrogen bonding agents with the silica can be studied by m spectroscopy, and Knozinger16 and Rouxlet and Semples11 have used transmission m spectroscopy to study the effect of various chemicals on the surface IR modes of silica. However, one of the major disadvantages of transmission IR spectroscopy is that the sample preparation (grinding and mixing with KBr and pelletizing) usually distorts the surface modes (see, e.g., Ref. 14) and there is always a doubt about the effect of the sample preparation on the measured properties. In recent years, photoacoustic (PA) spectroscopy has become the technique of choice for studying the IR spectra of samples in their natural state, since no sample preparation is necessary.18•19 Moreover, according to a recent paper, 20 the relative intensity of the surface modes in PA spectroscopy of silica particles is much higher than that in transmission FT-IR spectroscopy. Consequently PA spectroscopy is ideal for studying the surface chemistry. In this work, we have used PA spectroscopy to investigate the interaction of three hydrogen bonding agents (C7H8NO, C2H50H, and H20) with the silica surface by monitoring changes in the surface m modes. Our results show that the surface IR modes get perturbed to a larger extent than the bulk IR modes in interaction with the hydrogen bonding agents. Moreover, whereas in the earlier studies, the shift of the broad silanol band near 3500 cm-1 was used as a measure of the interaction with hydrogen bonding agents,16•17 here we show that the relative decrease in the intensity of the sharp silanol band near 3747 cm-1 also serves as a quantitative parameter for the relative surface coverage and surface modification. The temperature of a material may be ascertained by measurement of the intensity of the radiant energy it emits. This measurement may refer to the radiation of all wave lengths emitted by the material, or, if the material is glowing, the measurement may refer to the visible light emitted, or to the radiation in n very restricted portion of the visible spectrum. In general, the intensity of radiation depends not alone upon the temperature of the source, but, also upon its nature. Thus, glowing carbon appears to the eye about three times as bright as glowing platinum, at the same temperature. This is technically expressed by saying that the emissive power or emissivity of carbon is about three times that of platinum. A material having the highest theoretically possible emissivity is known as a "black body;" it is customary to assign a numerical value of 1 to the emissivity of a black body. A black body is experimentally realized by uniformly heating a hollow enclosure and observing the radiation coming from a small opening in the wall. The intensity of radiation emitted from this opening depends only on the temperature of the walls, and not on the material of which they are constructed. If E is the emissivity of any non-transparent material and R is its reflection coefficient, it can be shown that E + R, = 1. If a material having an emissivity of, say, 0.40, and hence a reflection coefficient of 0.60, is placed inside a black body it becomes indistinguishable from its Surroundings, because the total intensity of radiation leaving the material is the same as that emitted by the black body. While the material actually emits only 40 per cent of the intensity of a black body at the same temperature, 60 per cent. of the radiation falling upon it from the walls of the enclosure is reflected. However, if the material is removed from the black body and placed in the open air, the reflected intensity is no longer present and the object appears but 40 per cent. as bright as a black body at the same temperature.

The following paper is based chiefly on work done for the North Carolina Geological Survey, and is presented here by permission of Professor J. A. Holmes, State Geologist. It represents, in a very general way, the field-results obtained during the summer months of 1893, and 1894, and part of 1895; and the portions pertaining to North Carolina are, to a certain extent, abstracts of a report shortly to be published as Bulletin No. 11 of the State Survey. Less emphasis, however, is here laid on the petrographic descriptions of the peridotites, and more detailed treatment is given to subjects pertaining to methods of mining, cleaning, and utilization of the commercial product, corundum. Some of the most extensive fields for investigation which this subject presents have been scarcely more than suggested.

The quality of sheet and strip products made of rimming steel is closely related to the structure and chemistry of the ingots. The variation in composition throughout the ingot, as affected by segregation, is of great importance, as are also the form and distribution of the voids that result from the gases evolved. It is because of this importance that the considerable literature in this field has accumulated. No attempt is made in the present paper to compile a bibliography of the excellent work that has already been done, as this has been adequately covered in the many excellent reports on the heterogeneity of steel ingots prepared by a joint committee and published by the Iron and Steel Institute.' From time to time, in any field of investigation new tools and new technique are developed, which make further progress possible. In the field with which this paper is concerned, this is true. The development of the vacuum-fusion method as a means of following oxygen segregation, and a technique for obtaining the volume and composition of the gases evolved during solidification, have opened the way to obtaining data by means of which some considerable progress has been realized in developing more of the detailed mechanisms of solidification and segregation in rimming-steel ingots. General Theory of Segregation The basic cause of segregation lies in the fact that the impurities are less soluble in solid than in liquid iron. The solid that forms from the impure liquid is more nearly pure than the liquid itself. If solidification proceeds slowly enough, or if the liquid and solid phases are maintained in contact with one another for a sufficient time, a condition of equilibrium is set up, which may be represented by a phase diagram. ADAPTATION to mining needs of the rich store of geologic knowledge concerning mineral deposits and the application of principles of the science to specific problems in the finding, development and stoping of particular ore bodies are the major tasks of the mining geologist. On him to an increasing degree is placed responsibility for estimation of ore and appraisal of mineralized ground, for explicit guidance of exploration and development, and for reliable advice with regard to the many geologic conditions that influence mining operations. In the long continued and steady efforts to meet these requirements, a special skill in close observation, recording, and quantitative interpretation has been developed, particularly by geologists on staffs of mining companies, which in many districts has proved to be effective, not only for technical ends, but also for advancement of scientific understanding. The foundations for mining geologic work were laid in most districts of the West by investigations of the United States Geological Survey. For years they have provided a reliable basis for geologic thought with regard to ore deposits, and later studies have enriched and supplemented rather than superseded them. In very few districts have the geologic relations stated in the earlier papers needed serious modification or revision, in spite of new evidence subsequently made available in abundance by mining exposures. Indeed, one of the chief satisfactions derived from success in mining geologic work is the assurance that it gives of the correctness bf the major concepts of the science of ore formation, established to so large an extent by the leaders of this notable group among whom Lindgren has been so eminent a figure. The geologists of the Survey have given and are continuing to give the service which can properly be expected of the Federal government. Their work, however, though of the greatest value in establishing the broad geological setting,

Marine design and construction methods are presented on the caisson foundations for the tower piers at the Brooklyn, Ben Franklin, Delaware Memorial 1st, Tappan Zee, Walt Whitman, Throgs Neck, Verrazano Narrows, Delaware Memorial 2nd, and Newport Bridges. All of the bridges are founded on caissons, bearing on bedrock, soil, or piling. Caissons at the Tappan Zee Bridge are partially supported by piling and partially by buoyant forces. General subsurface conditions for each are provided. The purpose of this paper is inform engineers how bridge foundations using caissons were built over major waterways in the Northeastern USA in the past, anticipating a surge of new bridge construction in the near future.

In order to maximize the extraction of high grade pillars at The Doe Run Company, artificial pillars are created using cemented rock fill (CRF). CRF pillars aid extraction of pillars in two ways. One is to offer back support for the immediate area where pillars are being extracted. The second is to increase the post failure residual strength of pillars surrounded by backfill. The CRF is produced using a combination of minus 1.0 m run of mine (ROM) rock and minus 5 cm crushed rock. Depending on the operation the CRF slurry is either produced in an underground or a surface batch plant. The slurry and rock are transported to the fill area by truck where they are mixed and placed in 1 m lifts. To reduce the amount of CRF needed, fill fences are constructed around the perimeter of the CRF pillar. Within these fences ROM CRF is placed in lifts until within 0.6 m of the back after which minus five centimeter CRF is slung tight to the back utilizing slinger trucks. In constructing these artificial pillars a number of set procedures have been established to ensure that the work is done both properly and safely.
