ALTHOUGH statistical data are not at hand to justify definite statements as to progress in health, and safety in the mining and allied industries during 1935, it now appears probable that in both coal mining and in metal- mining the rate of accident occurrence as well as the absolute number of accidents will show slight increases for the year. Much: of the responsibility for this increase lies with the large number of relatively. small mines that have more or less recently come into existence, partly because of 'the lack of opportunity for work in the larger mines for large numbers of unemployed miners, and partly due to increased prices for some of the mineral products, especially gold. In general, the larger long-established nines show downward accident trends and this is decidedly encouraging as it shows that where mines are operated with real efficiency, mining can be done in relative safety.

Teeter-bed (i.e., hindered-bed) separators are used throughout the mineral processing industry for both classification and density separation. The high capacity and sizing characteristics of these units make them ideal for feed preparation prior to coarse flotation (+0.100 mm) circuits. Teeter-bed separators are typically easy to control with two basic operating parameters including fluidization water rate and bed level. However, data show that these two parameters greatly interact with one another. Given this finding, a high-level automatic control scheme was developed and implemented on a full-scale separator. In addition, dialogue with plant operators has led to several simple changes to an already established design that improves operational and maintenance characteristics.

With the advent of new high-strength magnetic materials, rare-earth magnetic separators have become more common place for processing heavy mineral sands. In many instances, rare-earth magnets have replaced conventional separators such as electromagnetic cross-belt and induced-roll type machines. This paper will present the results from a detailed test program developed to evaluate the performance of rare-earth drum and roll separators for processing heavy mineral sands. The effect of machine design parameters, such as magnetic element configuration and separator diameter, will be reviewed in light of these test results. The impact of basic operating parameters (i.e. feed rate and roll speed) on separation efficiency will also be presented.

The glass insert stressmeter, or photoelastic stressmeter, is an instrument designed to determine stress changes occurring in rocks. It has several potential advantages over other such devices in that it is a biaxial device, it is simple and it is cheap to make. The object of this study was to assess the behaviour of the meter under biaxial loads and to examine some of the problems associated with measurement and interpretation of the fringe pattern. This assessment has been carried out by comparing theoretical and laboratory behaviour of the meter. It has been shown that: a) There are certain optimum measuring points in the meter at which measurements should be made for best accuracy. The position of the points depends on the ratio, n, of the biaxial stresses. b) The meter&apos;s sensitivity can be assumed to be independent of the rock modulus E provided that the rock modulus is < 2.5 x 106 psi and not, as previous workers have assumed, if E < 5 x 106 psi. c) There are several methods of separating the principal stresses; some of these are unsatisfactory. A new method is proposed and discussed. d) The meter sensitivity decreases as the ratio of the biaxial stresses approaches unity; the accuracy thus also decreases. e) The axes of symmetry of the fringe pattern give an excellent indication of applied stress direction. f) Laboratory calibrations are in good agreement with theory. The glass insert or photoelastic stressmeter is an instrument designed to determine stress changes occurring in rocks. This stressmeter has been described in detail.l,2 Basically it is a hollow glass cylinder that has at one end a light source and filters producing circularly polarized light. The glass cylinder and source are grouted into a borehole in rock and the face of the cylinder is viewed through a quarter wave plate and an analyser. If, after installation, a stress change occurs in the rock, then a distinct colored isochro-matic fringe pattern is seen in the meter. The fringe order at any point in the meter can be determined by counting the fringes and measuring the fractional fringe orders by the Tardy compensation method. The relation between the fringe order at any point and the applied stress change can be determined either by calculation or by calibration. The object of this study was to assess the behavior of this stressmeter under biaxial loading conditions and to examine some of the problems of interpretation of the fringe pattern. THEORY Hiramatsu et a14 have determined the stress distribution in a hollow cylindrical inclusion in an elastic host material when subject to uniaxial stress. Using this solution, the biaxial case of stress p in the x direction and stress q in the y direction (Fig. 1) can be solved by superposition. This has been done in Appendix 1. Blasting powder is a slow-acting, black, granular explosive made of sulphur, charcoal and either potassium nitrate (saltpetre) or sodium nitrate. The blasting powder containing potassium nitrate is known as “A” blasting powder; that containing sodium nitrate, as “B” blasting powder. “A” blasting powder is a little denser, a little stronger and a little less hygroscopic than “B” blasting powder.

An investigation has been conducted to compare short transverse and longitudinal fatigue and fracture properties in 4.25-in.-thick, high strength aluminum alloy plates. One plate was produced using standard rolling techniques while the other was pre.forged before rolling. Little difference was shown in fatigue strength of longitudinal specimens taken from mid-thickness of the plate. Howeuer, in the short transverse orientation fatigue strengths at 107 cycles were about 25 and 50 pct less, respectively, for the preforged and standard rolled plate. Differences in fatigue strengths were attributed to grain size and shape as well US orientation of constituents. Fatigue crack propagation rates and fracture toughness were compared at three different stress intensity (K) levels, using a constant compliance, double cantilever, wedge-shaped specimen. In a given plate, comparable fatigue crack Propagation rates were observed in the longitudinal (i9W) and short transverse (TW) orientations. Somezuhat gveater rates were observed in the short transzerse (TR) orientation. The preforged plute gave a lower rate for all three directions. Considerable secondary cracking developed, at times, over portions of the fatigue crack in both plates, particularly at the lower stress intensity levels in the short transverse specimens. Micro structure revealed constituent stringers as possible causes of the crack branching. Fracture toughness was considerably less in both plates in the short transuerse orientation. It is concluded that preforging not only improved directional tensile properties but also the fatigue and fracture properties in general. On occasion, aluminum plates have been milled away for hinges or bolted connections and stressed through the thickness or short transverse direction. Little or no information is available concerning fatigue characteristics or fracture toughness in this loading orientation in aluminum plate, or of the effect of fabrication on these properties. It was the intent of this project to examine, develop, and apply a unique specimen that has been advocated by others to study the fatigue characteristics and fracture toughness of two differently fabricated high strength aluminum plates. Linear elastic fracture mechanics criteria may be applied to the specimen so that the fatigue crack propagation rate and fracture toughness data may be of use for design or inspection applications. Fatigue characteristics are generally measured in the longtudinal or long transverse direction, where fairly large specimens such as center notched panels,&apos; are usually employed. Limitations are evident due to plate thickness, however, in the type and size of specimen that may be tested in the short transverse direction without extensions. Therefore, a specimen that is to be loaded in this direction should, for convenience, be compact. The general type of fatigue crack propagation specimens discussed and employed herein meet this requirement. These specimens are commonly called double cantilever beam specimens and lately "crackline-loaded edge-crack specimens".2 They may vary from a slope of zero (parallel-sides) to a wedge shape, the type employed herein. In general for most specimens the stress intensity KI at the tip of a crack is a function of the load, P and crack length, a. Some varieties of the wedge shaped specimen, however, give essentially a constant stress intensity KI over a considerable range of crack length.&apos; This feature can be a valuable asset in fatigue crack propagation experiments because the stress-intensity can be controlled simply by controlling the load without regard to crack length. MATERIAL AND METHODS Material. A standard rolled (light pass reduction) and a ~reforged and rolled (heavy pass reduction) plate of 7179-T651 material were used for the evaluation. The chemistry, processing history and average tensile properties are shown in Table I. Specimen Selection and Preparation. The specimen selected for the generation of fatigue initiation or S-N data was an axial tension type and is shown in Fig. 1. Specimens were taken from mid-thickness in the longitudinal and short transverse directions from both plates. Specimens were polished with 500 grit paper in a direction parallel to the loading axis. For the fatigue crack propagation tests, the specimen shown in Fig. 2 was used. This is similar to a specimen that has been employed by Mostovoy3 for fracture toughness studies on 7075-T6 aluminum alloy. It also fortuitiously agrees quite well with the dimensions of a specimen for which Srawley and Gross2

Solid-liquid interfaces as well as defect formation processes during crystallization of melted silicon (Si) have been examined by using molecular-dynamics (MD) simulations. The ordinary Langevin equation employing the Tersoff interatomic potential was used for the calculation of the atomic trajectories. A solid-melt interface has a tendency to form {]] I} microfacets during the crystal growth in the [001] direction, while it is essentially flat during the (Ill) crystallization. Because of the difference of the interfacial structures, the structures of grown-in defects and defect evolution depend strongly on the growth direction. We discuss defect structures and their formation processes within the context of our results as well as previous experimental observations.

An investigation was begun by the Bureau of Mines in 1948 to determine the preparation characteristics of American coals. Results of the investigation were planned to be reported on a county basis and, from the data developed, to determine: I. Which coals either as mined or after beneficiation by conventional preparation are chemically suitable under present standards for producing metallurgical coke. 2. Which coals require special and more intensive treatment in preparation than is now practiced. 3. Which coals cannot be considered potential sources of metallurgical coke, regardless of preparation by present-day methods. This report is one in the county series that describes the preparation characteristics of the coals of Bell County, Ky.

Dual energy X-ray transmission imaging is extensively applied for safety luggage inspection. Its advantages are its rapid scanning rate (25 to 100 cm/sec) at approximately I mm resolution and simultaneous thickness independent metal identification. This is especially advantageous for secondary scrap metal inspection and automatic sorting. Other applications include metal product inspection, bale control, and waste processing. Recent progress in development of an automatic on-line sorter for bulk solids is presented and discussed. Besides various non-metal applications (solid fuels, wastes etc.) it appeared particularly effective in light metal sorting. As inspection tool better control of difficult to monitor solid bulk streams, batteries, bales and other related metals becomes possible.

YALE UNIVERSITY looked like a top-notch school to "Bert" Phillips in spite of the belief that the college in the home town sometimes looks less attractive than a more distant campus. So Bert, a native of New Haven, earned his B.S., M.S., and Ph.D. degrees from Yale. Immediately after Yale days lie served as metallurgist of the Scovill Manufacturing Co., Waterbury, and then went to the Central Research Laboratories of the American Smelting and Refining Co. at Maurer, N. J., where since 1931 he has been superintendent of research. Bert has contributed to metallurgical literature many reports of studies on the constitution and the physical, metallurgy of copper and copper alloys as well as papers on general nonferrous physical metallurgy.

Methods of treatment of pyrite concentrates differ, depending on the content of pyrite and non-ferrous metals: oxidation roasting, sulphatization roasting, smelting, direct hydrometallurgical treatment and so on. Existing technologies do not provide for high recovery of metals, expenses associated with existing technologies are high, and environmental issues, associated with the existing technologies need serious attention. We have developed universal technology of the activating-dissociating autogenous roasting of pyrite concentrates using air based, or air, enriched with oxygen, blow. The basic process is taking place in accordance with the following reaction: (1-x)FeS2 + (1-2x)O2 = Fe1-xS + (1-2x)SO2 +Q The products of this reaction are pyrrhotinized cinder and roasting gases, rich in SO2 (up to 18 % in case of air blow) and poor in SO3, that contain up to 1 % of elemental sulphur. Cinder contains different forms of pyrrhotite. These forms of pyrrhotite differ by its content (from Fe0.843S to Fe0.945S), thermodynamic, magnetic (from 4.10-1 to 3.6 SI units), flotation properties (with pyrite dissociation the ?-potential of the product is moving towards more electrically positive charge, from 0.95 for pyrite to 0.2 for dissociation products) and other properties that depend on the conditions of roasting. The combination of pyrrhotizing roasting with different methods of cinder treatment allows to increase the level of sulphatization of non-ferrous metals during the roasting; reduce the amount of blow used during the processing; reduce dust losses to the gas phase; reduce the capacity of gas cleaning system and increase resistance to corrosion of the gas-treatment system, used for the production of sulfuric acid from pyrites. This combination of treatments also allows to use magnetic separation and flotation for separation of ferrous and non-ferrous metal compounds during cinder treatment; perform de-arsenation of arsenic containing concentrates and by-products. Pyrrhotinized cinder may be treated by oxidizing and non-oxidizing hydrometallurgical methods. Engineering research consists, broadly speaking, in the investigation of the effect of the variations in a number of factors on some property of a product or characteristic of a process. The unambiguous description of the product or process requires that the property or characteristic be expressible in quantitative terms. For the purpose of practical control, it is likewise desirable that the independently variable factors governing the product or process be quantities, although this ideal goal is not always attained. Maximum efficiency—i.e., the attain- ment of the maximum amount of reliable, useful information relating to the influence of, the factors on the property of the product or characteristic of the process, for the least expense—is an important requirement for the satisfactory operation of a research organization. Obviously, a necessary condition for the attainment of maximum efficiency is an adequate knowledge of the specialized field in which the experimental research lies. While necessary, this condition is not sufficient. Proper attention must also be given to the general principles of experimental design together with the modern methods for the analysis and evaluation of experimental data. The Present discussion is confined to a single design, the so-called "factorial" design. This design is of special interest in that it attains its goal, maximum efficiency, by directly departing from the

With profitability pressures in heavy industry increasing, many producers are turning to predictive maintenance as a means of harvesting untapped value from their production assets. Corporations are losing their maintenance and processing core competencies through attrition. As capital budgets are being trimmed, manufacturers are consolidating operating units into fewer, more profitable routes. Maintenance functions, however, typically receive low priority when investment is made, since many companies consider maintenance costs as ?overhead?. Condition-based monitoring, integrated to Level I and Level II process inputs, is seen as the most cost-effective solution to the implementation of predictive maintenance strategies. This paper will review the evolution of preventive and predictive maintenance programs, highlighting examples of successful application of integrated condition monitoring.

Published investigations show that many different chemical reagents have been used in determining the constitution of coals , but only a few studies have been applied directly in evaluating the effects of such reagents on the carbonization products of coal , Most of the treatments have been so drastic that any permissible conclusions that may be drawn are inferential in respect to any favorable effects on the yields and composition of the usual carbonization products .

This paper presents preliminary resu]ts from field studies which were conducted to establish, among other things. the influence of medium viscosity on the partitioning behaviour of dense medium cyclones and drums in mineral applications, using frrrosilicon- ba_sed media. The medium vicoosit.y- was measured on-line, and partitioning behaviour was determined using ore sampling and density t r acers . The results demonstrate that viscosity is an important. operating variable, influencing ,eparat.ing density and efficiency under certain conditions. The implication is that metallurgical performance can be optimised by manipulating viscosity, either by appropriate selection of medium&apos; characteristics or by automatic alarming and/or "ontroi using signals from the on- 1. i ne viscometer.

(Matt. 23:23). I want to talk about "The Weightier Matters of Law." In a situation where big government is trying to have an effect on even small details of a work activity, otherwise simple situations become complex. Regulations are written to such detail that constant compliance with strict interpretations can be a nightmare--not to mention off the target of the intended purpose for the regulation. This paper details the computer hardware and software integrated to provide computer-assisted control and monitoring of four different coal mining machines. The backbone of each system is a U. S. Bureau of Mines integrated distributed microcomputer control network called BOM/NET. The network provides connections for intelligent sensors and systems that provide for navigation, diagnostics, and computer control. Many different computer systems using various operating systems (including RMX I, UNIX, VXWORKS, DOS and DCX51) have been connected to the network and each have had complete network functionality. A description of the network&apos;s integration to Joy&apos; 16CM, a Joy 14CM, a Jeffrey 102, continuous mining machines, and a custom built auger machine is provided. The networks for the Joy 16CM, the Joy 14CM, and the Jeffrey 102 have been installed and extensively tested at the Bureau&apos;s surface test facility. The Jeffrey 102 system has also been tested in a highwall coal seam. The Joy 14CM will soon be tested underground.
