Iron, in the form of steel and stainless steel, is the most commonly used metal in the world. Plain steels corrode and oxidize easily, while stainless steels exhibit improved corrosion and oxidation resistance. It has been found that rare earth metal (REM) additions, such as cerium and erbium, result in the improvement of the abovementioned properties in iron-containing compounds. Gadolinium is a REM, however, there is very little information available on the influence of gadolinium on the microstructure and mechanical properties of iron-containing compounds. Thus, the purpose of this research project was to determine the influence of gadolinium additions on the microstructure and mechanical properties of mild steel and 316 stainless steel. Ten alloys were produced for the purposes of this research. Five of the alloys had a base composition of mild steel while the remaining five had base composition of 316 stainless steel. The alloys for each of the base composition contained gadolinium additions of 0.1, 0.5, 1.2, and 5 weight per cent. The as-cast and the cold-rolled alloys were analysed. The alloys responded well to the cold-rolling with the exception of the 5 weight per cent gadolinium mild steel and stainless steel alloys. These alloys were extremely brittle and underwent a significant amount of cracking during the cold rolling process. A microstructural analysis of the alloys was conducted using a light optical microscope, while the chemical analysis of the alloys was conducted using energy dispersive x-ray spectroscopy (EDS). The resulting microstructures and EDS analyses revealed that the gadolinium displayed minimal solubility in the ferrite matrix of the mild steel alloys and minimal solubility in the austenite matrix of the stainless steel alloys. Instead the gadolinium formed as an interdendritic secondary phase in both alloys. EDS analysis revealed that the secondary phase in both alloys was gadolinium-rich. Vickers microhardness tests conducted on both alloys revealed that the alloys were composite-like, with a hard, brittle gadolinium-containing compound dispersed throughout a softer, more ductile matrix. The corrosion resistance of the alloys was determined through potentiodynamic anodic polarization tests. Two solutions were used for the corrosion rate tests: a 0.5 weight per cent NaC1 solution and a 0.5 M H2SO4 solution. The results from the mild steel alloys revealed that in both the solutions, the corrosion potentials and the corrosion resistance of the alloys increased with increasing gadolinium concentration up to 1 weight per cent. The corrosion rate test results from the stainless steel alloys revealed that the passivation current density and corrosion resistance of the alloys increased with increasing gadolinium concentration in both solutions. The oxidation resistances of the mild steel and stainless steel alloys were determined through the use of a Netzstch Simultaneous Thermal Analyser. For both the mild steel and the stainless steel alloys, it was found that the oxidation resistance of the alloys increased as the concentration of gadolinium increased when compared to the as-received mild steel and stainless steel samples. This could be due to a strongly adhering gadolinium oxide scale that formed on the surface of the alloys and resulted in the protection of the mild steel and the stainless steel.

"Fine manganese fines are characterized by large amount and low price compared to lump manganese ores. However, fine manganese must be agglomerated as EAF (electric arc furnace) feed. In this paper, high quality fired pellets were produced by simulating grate-kiln process to supply the feed for EAF from some imported manganese ore fines containing high combined water. Manganese ore fines assaying 44.47wt%Mn, 5.89wt%Fe, 12.09%LOI and with 72.7wt% ranging between 0.5mm and 8mm, are pretreated up to the particle size of 84.7wt% passing 0.074mm by HPGR (high press grinding roller) twice in open circuit. The finely ground manganese fines were mixed with 1.2wt% bentonite, balled at 15% moisture for 7min in disc pelletizer. The drop numbers, compressive strength and thermal shock temperature of green balls reach 11 times/0.5m, 11 N/pellet and 360oC, respectively. After the green balls drying in the oven, the dry pellets were preheated at 1050oC for 12 min and then fired at 1300oC for 12 min in electric tube furnace. The compressive strength of fired pellets reaches 2621 N/pellet. Therefore, these pellets are high quality burden for blast furnace or EAF due to high mechanical strength and high Mn grade of 49.11wt% and low detrimental elements.IntroductionManganese, mainly using as deoxidizing agent, desulfurization agent and alloying elements, is widely used in the steel company. "The purpose of this paper is to present the findings of a waste rock remediation program conducted at a gold mine in New South Wales (NSW) over a six-year period. The treatment of waste rock dumps included the longitudinal results of one-off applications using: ViroMine Technology, including the application of a chemical reagent called Terra B, which is a benign, clay-like substance derived from processed bauxite and other sources lime and biosolids (added for nutrient value) clay capping and topsoil compared treatment outcomes from these three approaches to a control.Parameters measured in the program included leachate pH, total actual acidity (TAA) and chromium reducible sulfur (CRS), Al, Cd, Cu, Fe, Mn, Ni, Pb, Zn, and tree height and vegetative cover density with data collected at regular intervals over a six-year monitoring period. Findings over the life of the study indicated, for example, that leachate pH in the control area was 4.5 in year 1 falling to 4.0 by year 6; pH in the lime and capping treated waste rock was initially raised to about 5.5 after treatment but fell to 5.0 within 24 months and remained a low 4.7 by year 6; pH in the Terra B waste rock was 6.8 in year 1 immediately after treatment, and actually increased to 7.3 by year 6 with no further treatment. This finding is of relevance because it effectively profiles the acidity curves of waste rock control, lime, and capping applications, and shows that they decline over time, despite an initial æpH shockÆ to the solids as measured by TAA and CRS in the case of lime. Similar treatment curves were observed for heavy metal leachates. Tree height and vegetative cover density indicated that with increasing acidity in the waste rock dump, the lime and capping options did not allow healthy revegetation, but in the Terra B treated areas tree growth and density were comparable to background, undisturbed forest levels.is needed with respect to tailings management, based on a novel integrated research framework.CITATION:Fergusson, L, Blair, D and Barros, G, 2012. Foram encontrados vários casos de falha de engrenagens de redutores de grande porte, aplicados em turbogeradores em usinas de cogeração. Este trabalho tem como objetivo a análise de falha dessas engrenagens bihelicoidais. Engrenagens operam sob condição de carregamento cíclico variável, logo seus principais modos de falha são fadiga de contato e por flexão de dentes. A engrenagem estudada, fabricada em aço 18CrNiMo7-6, foi utlizada em campo e apresentou fratura em dois dentes. Realizou-se uma análise de espectrofotometria para confirmação da composição química do material base. Uma análise microestrutural foi realizada utilizando microscopia óptica, revelando que a microestrutura corresponde a martensita com austenita retida. Foi feito um perfil de microdureza no plano transversal do dente, que indicou uma camada cementada efetiva de 2.150 µm e dureza de 715 HV0.1 na superficie. Foi feita uma fractografia macroscópica para determinação das caracteristicas da fratura, o que permitiu identificar marcas de praia e deltas de rio. Aliado a isso, foram feitas imagens por microscopia eletrônica de varredura, determinando o local do início da trinca. A partir dessas evidências, pôde-se concluir que o mecanismo de falha predominante foi fadiga por flexão de dente.

OF all the alloying elements used in commercial aluminum alloys, copper stands out as by far the most important, and it is perhaps for this reason that the constitution of the aluminum-copper system has received the attention of a number of experimenters covering a period of approximately 20 years. It would be expected that during this time the equilibrium relations had been thoroughly and exactly worked out. In a general way this is true, but there is a surprising lack of agreement in the details of the high aluminum end of the diagram, particularly in regard to the solid solubility of copper in aluminum, which has been given variously as 2 per cent. to 5 per cent. at the eutectic temperature. The importance of this is much greater than might at first appear to one unfamiliar with modern commercial aluminum alloys. This is true because, with one exception, the susceptibility of the strong alloys to heat treatment depends, in part at least, upon the solid solubility relations of copper in aluminum. In 1919, Merica, Waltenberg, and Freeman1 published the first detailed information on these solubility relations. They found that the solubility of copper decreases with falling temperature from about 4 per cent. at 5.25° C. to about 1 per cent. at 300° C. and is apparently still diminishing at lower temperatures. In 1921 there was published a brief account of the results obtained in the National Physical Laboratory, Teddington, England.2 This laboratory, however, reported that 5 per cent. of copper is soluble in aluminum at 540° C., and that this amount decreases to about 3 per cent. at 20° C.

The metallurgical laboratory data developed in this study indicate an improved electrowinning process for producing higher purity cerium ingot. A typical sample of the Reno electrocerium contains 99.9 weight-percent cerium and the following impurities: Total other rare-earth elements, less than 0.04 percent; iron not detected; silicon and aluminum, less than 0.02 percent each; calcium plus magnesium, less than 0.01 percent; carbon, 0.01 percent; oxygen, 0.002 percent; hydrogen, 0.0003 percent; and nitrogen, 0.0015 percent.

The 1963 performance of the United States economy was impressive. The year was one of continued growth unmarred by a recession. By the end of 1963 the economy's expansion had already lasted almost as long as the 1954-57 upswing, and the net gain in output since the trough in activity in early 1961 compared favorably with most earlier postwar cyclical advances. There was no indication of any slow- down at yearend. Both gross national product (GNP) and national income in 1963 were 5 percent higher than in the previous year. GNP totaled $584 billion, a gain of $28 billion over 1962. Real output of goods and services rose 3.4 percent over the year. Price increases continued to be moderate. Production, employment, personal income, and corporate profits all registered new but unemployment continued high at 5.5 percent and the prospects for improvement remained poor. The economy again failed to use its full potential. Current value of mineral production kept pace with the economy. The constant dollar value of mineral production gained more than real GNP because of the relatively stable price of minerals. Mining production achieved a new high in 1963. Steel production totaled 110 million tons, 12 million tons above 1962, making 1963 the first 100- million-ton year since 1957 and lifting the steel-associated minerals group upward. The gain in ferrous metals mining was insufficient to compensate for the decline of nonferrous metals mining resulting in an insignificant decline in the metal mining total as a whole. Annual global steel industry investment is partly mirrored in the data for selected market economy countries that appear in table 13 for 1988-90. No reasonably comprehensive 1991 data were available for inclusion in this study, and the partial reporting available was so incomplete that it was impossible to demonstrate whether the level advanced or declined from the 1990 level of nearly $15.5 billion. Moreover, with the radical changes that are now being effected in the steel industries of the states that were the U.S.S.R. and its CMEA partners, it is most regrettable that comprehensive and comparable data, both current and historic, on investment in this area are not available. Updated information on market economy country petroleum industry capital and exploration expenditures by geographic area has been included in table 14, and it is evident that there was a substantial upturn in investment in 1991. The level of almost $74.5 billion was 14.5 % above the 1990 level and included gains in every topical category and geographic area. The source of information for this table has been changed to the Oil and Gas Journal Database from the previously used Chase-Manhattan Bank study of Capital Investments of the World Petroleum Industry, which has been discontinued. Because of this source change, it has been necessary to modify the structure of the table somewhat, but its total scope of coverage is regarded as basically unchanged. It should be noted that the grand total, as well as some of the detail appearing for 1987, corresponds precisely with those in the previous source.

The Toguraci low sulfidation epithermal gold vein deposits are located 2 km WSW from the Gosowong mine and form part of the Gosowong Goldfield. The goldfield lies within a Neogene magmatic arc on Halmahera Island, North Maluku Province, East Indonesia. The terrain is moderate to steep, rainforested, and poorly outcropping. Exploration and mining operations are being carried out within the PT Nusa Halmahera Minerals Contract of Work (exploration tenement) jointly owned by Newcrest Mining Ltd (82.5 per cent, operator) and PT Aneka Tambang Tbk. (17.5 per cent). First pass exploration of the Gosowong area began late 1992 resulting in the discovery of weakly developed porphyry copper mineralisation (named Bora) at Toguraci in 1993. Early in the evaluation of this porphyry an overprinting epithermal Au/Ag mineralisation event was recognised, however exploration focus remained on the Bora porphyry deposit for some time. The discovery of the nearby Gosowong epithermal gold deposit and the exploration of other prospects in the area further diverted attention and funds from Toguraci. It was not until year 2000 that Toguraci was seriously reevaluated as part of a detailed appraisal of the epithermal gold potential within a 5 km radius of the Gosowong gold mine. A fly-camp based drilling campaign using man-portable rigs was undertaken between August 2000 and March 2002. All exploration at Toguraci was then stopped pending government approvals to mine. These were finally issued in May 2003 and immediately drilling restarted and pre-mine approvals (eg the environmental impact study) were sought and granted. The first Toguraci gold bar was poured in February 2004. Exploration at Toguraci and elsewhere in the Gosowong Goldfield continues today.

The treatment of preg-robbing gold ores has always been a technical challenge in the gold industry. Early solutions included removal of preg-robbing carbonaceous material by flotation, the addition of kerosene to æblindÆ/passivate the surface of the preg-robbing component, and the most effective of all options, roasting the ore. Unfortunately gold ores have become more complex and roasting has environmental challenges, so other methods of treatment have had to be found. J. A. RICHARDSON[t]-Mr. Stuckey's account of the geology of the kaolins of North Carolina suggests that they exhibit some features similar to those of the Malay Peninsula. About one half of British Malaya (some 26,000 square miles) is occupied at the surface by igneous rocks, of which granite and its associated derivatives constitute fully 90 pct. The average granite is a biotic variety. It is predominantly potassic but carries, in addition, notable amounts of soda and lime so that albite and albiteoligoclase are generally common constituents of the rock. The minor derivatives from granite "magma" likewise include potassic and sodi-potassic members. Decomposition of the granitic rocks has led to the formation of kaolin in many localities, but, in general, the deposits are rather small and, at present, none is exploited commercially. True primary or residual kaolins (as defined by Stuckey; p. 48 Vol. 173, p. 2 TP 2219) have been developed from feldspar veins, pegmatites and from other granitic differentiates which cut through the larger masses of granite; they are usually small and narrow. Kaolin has been derived from aplite, quartz porphyry, quartz micro-porphyry, felsites and microgranites belonging to a complex known as the Chegar Perah-Pulai intrusion in northwest Pahang and southwest Kelantan. The bulk of the component rocks has been more or less strongly sheared. Kaolin-like end products have been formed from both sheared and nonsheared varieties. Kaolin has been formed also by the complete breakdown of trondjemite flanking the northwestern and western margins of the complex Bukit Ranjut syenite intrusion in northwest Pahang. These trondjemites range in composition from essentially quartz-free albiteplagioclasites to quartz-free microcline rocks; they are, in effect, the syenitic homologues of white sodic and potassic granite-aplites. The granites in Malaya have generally undergone more or less severe surficial weathering leading to the production of a spongy and rather cellular or a soft "mealy" material (sandy clay) down to depths of about 100 ft; in places the granite is strongly decomposed down to 150 ft. There has occurred, therefore, widespread partial kaolinization, but, in general, no extensive deposits of good quality kaolin seem to have been formed by these processes of decay. Frequently, the katamorphic processes of desilicification have advanced beyond the production of kaolin towards the formation of lateritic end products. The more important Malayan kaoiins seem to be confined to the western alluvial plains, particularly in areas either where granite crops out at surface, or where it forms the bedrock of the alluvium. There are numerous excellent examples around Gopeng and elsewhere in the Kinta Valley of Perak. Such kaolins belong to Stuckey's groups of secondary deposits, and, like them, these also may be bedded. Field observations have established the existence of what for want of a better name is referred to by the Malayan Geological Survey as "granite wash." It is believed that granite, undergoing extensive deeply penetrative and probably rather rapid destruction under humid tropical weathering (temperature around 90°F; rainfall about 100 in. per annum; high humidity) "flowed," was moved by "creep" and, in addition, probably slumped in large waterlogged masses of sandy clay from topographic salients onto the adjacent flats. Either during this period of transmigration or later when the sludged granite detritus, after having more or less come to rest, was attacked by flowing water, differential sorting and erosion took place with the result that the resorted debris was moved and later deposited as bedded alluvium. Oxide and silicates respond to flotation with a large number of anionic collectors. These include carboxylates (fatty acids), sulfonates, alkyl sulfates, and certain chelating agents. In contrast to sulfide mineral flotation, relatively long-chained collectors (generally longer than 10 carbons) are required to effect flotation of this group of minerals. The structural formulas of these various anionic collectors are presented in Table 1. Formulas and solubilities of various fatty acids are presented in Table 2. These solubilities are those of the dissolved and undissociated species of the acid, e.g. oleic acid, HOl(aq). Of the compounds listed, oleic acid and abietic acid, which IS a major constituent of talloel, are used most commonly in commercial applications. The usage of these two collectors is related to cost and effectiveness. In addition to their high molecular weights, oleic acid contains a double bond in its hydrocarbon chain, while abietic acid is comprised of aromatic rings containing double bonds. The presence of double bonds increases solubility significantly over that of saturated homologues. Stability of metal-collectors assumes a most significant role in these systems, and the solubility products of various metal carboxylates and sulfonates are listed in Tables 3, 4 and 5. In addition to these properties, strength of the acids of these various anionic collectors is also important. The carboxylic and hydroxamic acids are weak acids whereas sulfonic and alkyl sulfuric acids are strong acids. All of the carboxylic acids fall in the range of pK = 4.7 ± 0.5 ([2]); the pK of hydroxamic acid is around 9 ([3]); and the pK of sulfonic acid is about 1.5 ([4]).

INTRODUCTION Good mine ventilation starts at the drawing board. A coal mine will either be adequately ventilated or not, depending upon how good a job was done in the planning. Poor planning will not only result in inadequate ventilation, but may also lead to low productivity. A mine foreman cannot achieve high productivity while trying to maintain 4.2 m3/s (9000 cfm) of air at his last open crosscut. PLANNING What will provide adequate ventilation? A rule of thumb in laying out a coal mine is to provide enough entries in the main entry system to keep air velocities at 2.5 m/s (500 fpm) or less; at this rate of flow, good ventilation may be expected. The intake and return air courses of a coal mine do not improve with age. Entries will deteriorate, ribs will slough, roof will fall, and clutter will accumulate. The resistance offered to air travel will continue to increase with each passing year. Providing enough airways for the present and the future cannot be emphasized too strongly. In order to better appreciate good planning and bring it into better focus, assume a hypothetical mine has the following features: entries 1.5 m (5 ft) high and 6.1 m (20 ft) wide; one intake and one return entry; the mine development is 4.8 km (3 miles) from the intake and upcast ventilation shafts; and the ventilation requirement is 141.6 m3/s (300,000 cfm). "The present study reports solvent extraction and separation of zinc from concentrated nickel sulfate solution. In our previous study, Zn and Cd in cold filter cake (CFC, 45-55% Zn, 11-16% Cd, and 2.5-4% Ni) were extracted by alkaline leaching followed by electrowinning processes respectively. The strip solution from electrowinning process, was a pregnant liquor solution (PLS) containing 16.8 g/l Ni and 4.2 g/l Zn. In this work, PLS is subjected to the solvent extraction process for separation of traces of Zn from high grade nickel. The zinc free raffinate containing 16.6 g/l Ni sulfate solution will flow to nickel electrowinning plant for cathode production. Di-(2-ethylhexyl) phosphoric acid (D2EHPA) is the organic phase used in this study. The effects of various parameters such as organic phase concentration (10- 40 % v/v), pH (1.5-3), and temperature (25 and 45°) are investigated. Zinc over nickel separation factor increases by increasing pH from1.5 to 3. The results show that 98.7% of Zn was loaded at25°C O/A ratio of 1, pH 3, and 10% vol. D2EHPA. A 10 M NaOH is used for pH control. However, replacement of pH controlling agent with ammonia solution (25%. v/v) results in interesting observations. Ammonia addition, reduces the solubility of Ni2+ cations in solution. Nickel starts to precipitate from raffinate in a crystalline bluish-green form. The obtained crystals are characterized by XRF and identified to be nickel-bearing analog of boussingaultite, a rare sulfate mineral of nickel with chemical formula of Ni (NH4)2(SO4)2.6H2O. The crystallization rate of crystals is studied. It is a slow precipitation process with 75% in 4 days.INTRODUCTION Annually, many hydrometallurgical processes such as electrowinning, solvent extraction and leaching are applied to waste filter cakes in Zanjan, Iran. These additional processes on filter cakes are critical from both environmental and economic points of view. CFC (cold filter cake) is a toxic but valuable filter cake (45-55% Zn, 11-16% Cd, 2.5-4% Ni, and 0.2-1.5% Cu) produced in many zinc production plants. Our research group at Research and Engineering Company for Non-ferrous Metals (ReCo.), developed a series of hydrometallurgical methods for extraction of zinc, cadmium and nickel from CFC (Moradkhani, & Rasouli 2012). The recovery of zinc and cadmium with alkaline leaching and electrowinning was successfully studied. The strip sulfate solution from cadmium electrowinning unit, contains high concentration of nickel with some traces of zinc impurity. This pregnant liquor solution (PLS) was analyzed and reported to contain 16.8 g/l Ni and 4.2 g/l Zn. In this work, PLS is subjected to the solvent extraction process to separate Zn from nickel (Fig. 1). The organic phase stripping solution containing 4.2 g/l zinc and 200 ppm nickel can be circulated and used in the acidic leaching step. The Bureau of Mines examined the possibility of a seasonal variation of respirable dust concentration in U.S. coal mines. The first step was to review company and MSHA-inspector dust samples that had been collected during the past several years in 14 selected mines for compliance purposes. Results indicated severe scatter in data; most standard deviations of the dust concentrations measured in winter and summer months were comparable in magnitude with the mean values of dust concentrations for the seasons. Therefore, a detailed statistical analysis was conducted. At the 90% confidence level, the company samples of three mines had winter means 0.15 to 0.54 mg/m3 higher than the summer means; six mines had negligible seasonal variations; and five mines had winter means that ranged from higher to lower than the summer means. Inspector data, however, were too sparse for analysis. In view of both the low frequency of occurrence of a seasonal effect and its wide scatter in several of the mines, the study was ended with the conclusion that seasonal varia-tion in respirable dust levels, in general, is an insignificant factor.

Paste backfill is a pumpable, flowable, non-Newtonian fluid consisting generally of mine tailings and cement. Paste is prepared from dilute slurries of tailings. This is done by dewatering the slurries with conventional thickening or filtering. Backfill with a paste consistency is prepared by mixing dewatered tailings with cement and water to obtain the desired consistency of medium slump concrete. The paste is pumped with concrete pumps over relatively long (1 km or 0.6 mile) horizontal distances. More commonly, though, it flows by gravity down a mine shaft and then horizontally to the void being filled. Alternatively, cement can be added near the end of the pipeline. A certain proportion of fine particles <20 µm (<625 mesh) must be present in pastes but particles of aggregate can be added without significantly affecting the flow characteristics. Detailed testwork is necessary to design a system to prepare and place paste backfill. Testwork must determine dewatering characteristics, strength of mixes and friction in pipelines. Plants must be well engineered and controlled with PLCs because high quality control is necessary to prevent plugged pipelines and excessive pressures. Relatively small amounts of cement (3% to 5%) produce stiff backfill material 1.5 to 3.5 MPa (217 to 507 psi). The advantages of paste backfill in a mining operation include reduced mine dewatering, labor and materials savings, reduced tailings impoundment requirements, good support properties and reduced spills underground. In certain cases where more than 30% of the weight of the ore is sold as a product, the entire tailings stream can be placed underground. Paste technology can he used for surface or underground placement of tailings.

"Spodumene, feldspar and quartz possess similar surface properties, which make the difficult to separate spodumene from other silicate minerals by flotation. The differences of crystal structure, surface property and floatability of three minerals were studied by various technical means. The results show that Li-O and Al-O bonds in spodumene structure are not strong and easy to be broken. However, Al-O and Si-O bonds in feldspar and Si-O bond in quartz are very strong and not easy to be broken. High contents of Al and Li on spodumene surface were found by XPS measurements, which is benefit for the adsorption of anionic collector. The surface energies of main cleavage planes of spodumene (110), feldspar (001) and quartz (001) are 1.88 J/m2, 2.97J/m2 and 2.68J/m2, respectively. Hence, the exposed surfaces of feldspar and quartz are not saturated and easy to adsorb OH- ions from solution and cause the lower IEP than spodumene. The contact angles of three minerals in water are lower than 16º, suggesting that the hydrophilicity of three minerals is high, and the order of hydrophilicity is quartz > feldspar >spodumene. Correspondingly, contact angles and flotation recoveries of spodumene are bigger than that of feldspar and quartz in presence of a combined anionic and cationic collector named YOA.INTRODUCTION Flotation technology plays most important role for the recovery of spodumene from pegmatite ore. Generally, spodumene with fresh surface is easy to be floated using soap and oleic acid as collector, and the best flotation pH range is 4.0 to 9.0. However, the flotability of spodumene will become worse when its surface was polluted by slime which produced by the weathering of spodumene and other silicates (Dresler et al. 1998; Moon and Fuerstenau 2003; Menéndez et al. 2004; Yu et al. 2015). In addition, the species of Ca2+, Fe3+, Mg2+ and other metal ions in pulp can not only activate the flotation of spodumene, but also the activation of gangue minerals, and then the flotation selectivity of spodumene from gangue minerals became wores (Wang and Yu 2007; Yu et al. 2014). In order to eliminate the negative effects of slime and metal ions on the flotation of spoddumene, the desliming and long time scrubbing with the addition of NaOH and Na2CO3 were adopted. Usually, NaOH shows the activation for spodumene flotation, and the recovery of spodumene increases with the increase of NaOH dosage. Na2CO3 can eliminate the non selective activation of Ca2+, Fe3+, Mg2+ ions in the pulp, and the concentrate grade of spodumene increases with the increase of Na2CO3 dosage. Anionic collectors such as chelants, hydroxamic acid, oxidized paraffin soap, naphthenic acid and oleic acid were widely used for the flotation of spodumene (Dresler et al. 1998; Moon and Fuerstenau 2003; Menéndez et al. 2004; Yu et al. 2015)."

Production in the United States has increased from 23,271 tons valued at $ 94,943 in 1910 , to 56,843 tons valued at $336,099 in 1930. Both pumice and pumicite are included in these figures as it has been impractical to collect statistical data on the separate commodities .

"The as-cast microstructure of two commercial-size ingots of aluminum alloy 3004 produced by the electromagnetic casting process was quantitatively characterized. This involved the quantitative determination of through-thickness and across-width variations in dendrite cell size, grain size, macrosegregation of alloying elements, interparticle spacing, and the types, volume fractions, and sizes of the constituent or second phase particles. More than ninety-five percent of the constituent phases in the ingots consisted of the A16(Mn,Fe) phase; the desirable a-Al 12(Fe,Mn)3Si phase was not detected in any of the ingots by Guinier X-ray diffraction analyses or electron probe X-ray microanalyses. A significant microstructural heterogeneity through the thickness and across the width of both ingots was observed. For example, macrosegregation, and the sizes of the constituent phase particles, dendrite cells, and grains increased concomitantly from edge to mid-width and from surface to center of the ingots. There was a -20% depletion (negative macrosegregation) of Mg and a +54-87% enrichment (positive macrosegregation) of Ti in the center of the ingots. With the exception of grain size, there was no significant microstructural difference between the two ingots examined. The causes and practical implications of the observed microstructural heterogeneity in the ingots are discussed.IntroductionThe first step in the fabrication of majority of wrought products of aluminum and its alloys is the casting of large ingots or billets of simple shapes (round or rectangular). The sizes of the ingots vary from 10 mm to 450 mm diameter or 25 mm to 780 mm thick. The quality of the finished products is established at the ingot casting stage. This is because the microstructural characteristics, such as secondary dendrite cell size or arm spacing, amount of alloying elements retained in solid solution, macrosegregation, and the characteristics of second phases, produced during casting cannot be reversed by subsequent processing. Up until twenty-five years ago, the effect of as-cast microstructure of large ingots on the structure and behavior of thin sheets (0.34 mm thick) during drawing and ironing processes was incorrectly assumed to be minimal or nonexistent. This was based on the erroneous notion that the thermal treatments and large reduction (>99.94%) and strain that the ingot undergoes during production of the sheets completely destroys the original ingot structure and its inherent heterogeneity. However, the effects of ingot structure can, a priori, be deduced from the observed effects of constituent phase particle size, type and volume fraction on recrystallization, development of texture during annealing and deformation, and earing. In fact, careful examination of the behavior of products produced from different size ingots or castings have shown that the original microstructure of the ingot has a direct impact on the properties and performance of the end products."
