Discussion of the paper of Edward Keller, presented at the Butte meeting, August, 1913, and printed in Bulletin No. 80, August, 1913, pp. 2093 to 2115. GEORGE L. HEATH, Hubbell, Mich.:-In the admirable paper quoted, is mentioned the date when the 5-g. assay was first proposed is a standard for refined metal. The author omitted, however, to mention a later paper,1 which contains a proposal for the use of a single " stock solution " of mixed acids, which has been adopted by the American Brass Co. and others. The suggestion is made that such a scheme would save time and manipulation with converter metal. Unless the low current of 0.5 ampere and the large excess of nitric acid, recommended by Mr. Keller, have been proved necessary to hold up antimony-and selenium, the use of the mixed solution which we have adopted will permit the use of 1 ampere of current per square decimeter of cathode surface, until the solutions have become colorless. At this point, we wash the covers and reduce to 0.5 ampere to prevent oxidation or contamination. The ordinary split electrodes have been used. With strong current, at least, the use of an excess of nitric acid tends to the neutralization of the solution before the end of the period, from the formation of too much ammonia., and this is detrimental. Antimony deposits more easily than arsenic, and tends to drag the latter dorm with it. There must, be some such explanation for the fact. that we have made hundreds of deposits of pure cathodes from Lake material containing no antimony, but as. high as 0.5 per cent. of arsenic. By placing an assay beaker in the Frary solenoid, or rotary device, a cathode deposit with less than 0.01 per cent. of impurity is easily obtained in one operation from 3 g. of whitneyite, carrying from 7 to 10 per cent. of arsenic. In such a case, it is necessary to test several times for end point and remove the plate as soon as no brown tint appears (at once) when hydrogen sulphide water is added to the test portion on the spot plate. Despite numerous empirical, numerical, and hybrid studies conducted on the subject of coal rib failure, mine fatalities related to rib failures continue to occur at around 1.5 per year between 2009 and 2021. To date, a standard methodology for the design of coal rib supports that can accommodate the wide range of unique conditions found in coal mines in the USA has not been developed, forcing mine operators to rely on the trial-and-error process or industrial legacy practices for the design of coal rib support patterns. In this study, to better understand the support systems’ effectiveness, various rib bolting scenarios were investigated. A coal mass constitutive model is implemented to a distinct element method (DEM) code, and rib factor-of-safety (RibFOS) analyses were performed by applying strength-reduction for the coal matrix and explicitly modeled face cleats. Ribs with various overburden depths and mining heights composed of solid Banded-Bright coal (BBC) were considered in this study. Different scenarios such as rib bolt length and the number of bolts were studied to quantify the effect of primary rib support density on rib stability. As a result of the unsupported coal rib analyses, a decaying exponential relationship is proposed between the mining height-overburden depth and the RibFOS. The developed coal rib models clearly show the coal-rib bolt interaction and illustrate how the addition of rib bolts restricts the movement of the coal rib. The results reveal that the strength reduction method in DEM code with the coal-mass model can aid in the development of practical primary support charts, which can help in the rib support design process. In addition, an unsupported RibFOS cutoff is proposed, beyond which the addition of primary support cannot stabilize the failed rib structure.

A quality culture was instilled into the workforce prior to commissioning which ultimately led to AS3902 qualification in 1992. Fifteen alkyl cycloalkyl sulfides and three dicycloalkyl sulfides were synthesized to provide reference compounds in the search for these classes of sulfur compounds in crude oils. In synthesizing sulfides by alkaline alkylation the order in which the reactants were added was shown to determine the yield and purity of the product.

Sodium cyanide continues to be the lixiviant of choice for gold dissolution. Many gold ore-bodies contain a significant amount of cyanide-soluble copper which increases the cost of processing due to high cyanide consumption and high cyanide destruction and disposal costs. Several cyanide destruction processes are in use today, however, there are just a few cyanide recovery plants operating. A solvent extraction process to recover cyanide has been developed which utilizes the organophosphorous extractants Cyanex 923, di-butyl-butyl-phosphonate (DBBP) or tri-n-butyl phosphate (TBP) in Bateman Pulsed Columns. Copper cyanide species are first converted to hydrogen cyanide (HCN) by acidification, with or without sulfide addition. HCN is extracted by the organic and stripped using a suitable base (eg. NaOH) resulting in a high strength cyanide solution (eg. NaCN) for recycle to the gold recovery process. Continuous pilot plant testwork on HCN extraction using a 40 mm diameter Bateman Pulsed Column demonstrated a cyanide recovery of greater than 99% with final levels of cyanide in solution of less than 10 ppm. These results illustrate the potential of this technology to recycle cyanide and to detoxify final effluent streams.

Algumas qualidades de aço UltraBaixo Carbono têm exigido teores de fósforo cada vez mais baixos. Quando se obtém teor de fósforo fim de sopro no convertedor acima dos níveis exigidos pelo cliente, faz-se necessário realizar um retrabalho na corrida ou promover desvios, utilizando-a em aços para outras aplicações. Para reduzir ainda mais o teor de fósforo durante o vazamento do aço do convertedor para a panela desenvolveu-se uma escória sintética desfosforante a ser utilizada quando o teor de fósforo não atende ao especificado no fim de sopro. Foram comparadas corridas com utilização da escória sintética e corridas utilizando somente cal. Obteve-se um aumento de 28,2 pontos percentuais na taxa de remoção de fósforo durante o vazamento com a utilização da escória sintética. Diante dos resultados obtidos, o produto foi aprovado para utilização na Aciaria 2 da Usiminas Ipatinga

The concept of green mining is to improve the mining industry in a holistic way so that it is safe, efficient, and environmentally sustainable. The purpose of this study was to develop an evaluation index system of green surface mining based on the theory of green grades. The evaluation model is comprised of three attributes (safety, efficiency, and environment), nine criteria, and 35 indicators. The fuzzy comprehensive evaluation method was used to determine the weights of indicators by taking into consideration degree centrality, closeness centrality, and betweenness centrality. Findings indicate that the environment is the most critical aspect of green surface mining, followed by efficiency and safety. The top five ranked green mining success indicators were the application of new technology, starting-off-rate of equipment, science and technology input to total investment, the number of accidents (decreased), and the production (increased). It was observed that more improvements are needed to overcome water, air, waste, and sound pollution. Attention should also be paid to land reclamation and post-mining land uses, which are key factors in green mining. The proposed model can be applied to evaluate and improve the level of green surface mining in other regions. This study provides a tool for decision-makers that can offer technical assistance to green mining.

Smelting of nickel-copper sulfide ores at Vale Inco’s Sudbury operations commenced in 1888 and the first converting plant went into operation in 1892. As the demand for nickel grew, the smelting operations expanded and by the 1960’s the Copper Cliff Smelter featured the longest converter aisle in the world with space for nineteen Peirce-Smith converters. During this long period, different converting techniques and vessels were employed. The evolution of converting is reviewed with special emphasis on the modifications made to the Peirce-Smith vessel to accommodate the metallurgical and process needs of the changing times.

Willowstick has successfully employed a new Seismic Acoustic Resonance (SAR) method to improve seepage characterization through, beneath, and around dams. SAR is a passive seismic method that detects zones of higher permeability in the foundation and fill materials of a dam. Just as the ocean has tides, the earth’s crust experiences daily “Earth Tides” and is constantly in motion. Continual motion produces resonance signals that can be measured, interpreted, and modeled to identify zones of higher permeability within a dam and its foundation. The SAR results are analyzed in conjunction with the traditional Willowstick Method to better characterize seepage flow paths and patterns trough, beneath, or around a dam in three dimensions. When both methodologies, which use entirely different scientific principles, identify the same anomalous feature, a higher degree of confidence is gained in the results of the investigation. Willowstick has effectively utilized the SAR method on many successful dam seepage investigations. The two geophysical techniques when used in parallel have yielded complimentary results, with both methods providing beneficial information about seepage locations. This paper will detail seepage flow paths identified using both Willowstick and SAR methods for two case study tailings dams in Canada and the United States.

Minería sin residuos o Wasteless Mining (WLM) es una innovación tecnológica global que apunta a eliminar los riesgos ambientales generados por escombreras y relaves, por medio de una combinación de los procesos de explotación subterránea por hundimiento y de espesamiento de relaves hasta convertirlo en pasta. La condición ideal ocurre cuando ya existe una explotación a tajo abierto y se migra a explotación subterránea por hundimiento, en cuyo caso el déficit de volumen para alojar el relave en pasta lo suple el antiguo tajo. La cavidad resultante del minado por hundimiento puede contener algo más de 2/3 del residuo generado; el otro tercio se coloca en el tajo pre-existente, en obras subterráneas abandonadas, en un depósito sobre zonas de subsidencia delimitada por pretiles o en una relavera menor. Durante la explotación de mina por hundimiento, hasta extraer 1/3 de las reservas no hay cráter de subsidencia. Entre las principales ventajas de la WLM, el artículo cita: mínimo uso de suelo y quebradas para depositar residuos, bajo riesgo de filtraciones y/o producción de aguas ácidas, bajo consumo de agua, ausencia de vibraciones o polvo por voladura.

A recent study conducted by the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) evaluated the roof bolter canopy air curtain (CAC) systemin a blowing face ventilation system, demonstrating its effectiveness and illustrating the CAC protection zones. This study evaluates the roof bolter machine CAC while operating in an exhausting face ventilation system. This study considers two similar locations to allow comparison with the previous blowing face ventilation (Zheng et al., Min Metal Explor 36(6):1115–1126, (2019)) study: (1) a roof bolter machine bolting the roof at 20 ft (6.1 m) from the face and (2) a roof bolting machine bolting at 4 ft (1.2 m) from the face. The environment introduces 6.0 mg/m3 of respirable dust to represent the roof boltingmachine operating downstreamof the continuous miner. However, the exhausting face ventilation uses an exhaust curtain with 9000 cfm (4.25 m3/s) of air. Two roof bolter machine working positions are simulated with the use of dual drill heads in the inward position for two inside bolts and in the outward position for two outside bolts. The influence of the CAC on airflows and dust dispersion is evaluated with the CAC operating at 250 cfm (0.12 m3/s) with dust reductions ranging from 39.5 to 82.8%. When the roof bolter machine operated close to the face, increasing CAC airflow was required for adequate protection since the dust reductions can be as low as 39.5%. Additional CAC airflows of 350 cfm(0.17 m3/s) and 450 cfm(0.21 m3/s) were evaluated and demonstrated that dust reductions increased to 59.7% (350 cfm) and 72.0% (450 cfm) for the worst location where the roof bolter operators located.

Measurements of vapor pressure can be used to determine the thermodynamic activities of the components of metallic solutions . The determination of activity by this method requires accurate values for the vapor pressure of the pure component and for its partial pressure above the alloy solution . This investigation was conducted to measure the vapor pressure of liquid manganese for use in future studies of the activity of manganese in various liquid alloys . In related investigations in the Bureau's Pyrometallurgy Laboratory , vapor pressures of copper , iron and nickel have been measured and activit 4 5 6 have been determined in the iron- copper and iron- nickel systems . Difficulties were experienced with manganese which were not encountered in the previous investigations . Manganese oxidizes readily and greater care was needed to maintain an oxygen- and moisture - free atmosphere in the furnace . In addition , liquid manganese wet the refractories and there was a tendency to foam and splash on introduction of the carrier gas . Because of these difficulties several variations in the experimental procedure were studied . These were first tested with silver which has a vapor pressure of the same order of magnitude as manganese but is relatively inert at high temperatures . Although no significant changes in the original procedure resulted from this work, considerable data were obtained for silver and have been included in this report . Bauer and BBrruunnnneerr7/ have reported the only extensive investigation of the vapor pressure of liquid manganese . However , their results are not consistent with the data obtained by McCabe and Hudson for solid manganese . Measurements of the vapor pressure of silver have been reported by McCabe and Birchenal1,2/ Schadel and Birchenall , 10/ Harteck , 11 / Fischer , 12/ and von Wartenberg.13 / Generally , these investigators conducted their measurements at lower temperatures than were used in this study .

Face and pillar bursts, bumps and bounces are violent failures that occur in underground coal mines in response to a complicated interplay of face and pillar geometry, seam depth, coal strength and moduli and interactions between roof, seam and floor strata. Additional complications arise from the presence of gas, mainly methane, and associated pressure and flow that vary with time and are further influenced by the rate of face advance. Numerical models provide a means of quantitatively accounting for the various complications of mining geometry, the stratigraphic column, mechanical properties, gas flow properties and associated interactions. A fully coupled hydromechanical finiteelement code, utAH4, serves the purpose well and allows study of the important interaction between stress concentration and gas pressure in determining safety and stability of the face during the advance of a longwall panel in a deep underground coal mine in central Utah. Face advance is relatively fast compared with gas flow and depressurization in coal seams of low gas permeability. Consequently, gas pressure is high at the face. When a longwall is stationary, depressurization occurs at the face, so effective stress and strength increase. thus, when gas flow at the face is high and requires a pause in face advance to bring gas concentration to an acceptable level, a second benefit occurs because of timely depressurization. However, quantitative analysis of a deep coal mine shows that regardless of gas pressure, high stress concentration is more likely to pose a threat to face and pillar wall stability.

A method developed by soil scientists for measuring permeability anisotropy of soils has been adapted for use in studies of sandstone permeability aniso-tmpy. Studies on Berea and Bandera sandstone show that permeability of these materials decreases upon application of simulated overburden pressure. Permeability reduction of Berea and Grubb sandstone cores subjected to simulated overburden pressure is shown to be a function of the ratio of radial to axial stress. INTRODUCTION The effects of mechanical stress on reservoir rock parameters are now generally accepted as being important in reservoir engineering calculations. In several oil fields the unique behavior of the reservoir has been attributed to the influence of overburden pressure or internal fluid pressure on rock permeability or fluid content. l Although the gross effects of overburden pressure on permeability, porosity, waterflood efficiency, electrical resistance and sonic velocity have now been established,3-9 there are some very interesting, and perhaps important, details of rock behavior under stress that have not heretofore been studied. In this paper we will show that permeability anistropy of several sandstones is a function of overburden pressure. We will also show that permeability reduction of cylindrical samples of two sandstones, when subjected to mechanical stress, is a function of the ratio of radial to axial stress. Most studies of overburden pressure effects made in the past have attempted to duplicate reservoir conditions by applying hydrostatic external pressure on all surfaces of the sample. Assuming perfect elasticity, that is, no viscoelastic flow during geological time, reservoir rock in situ cannot be under hydrostatic stress as is apparent from the value of 0.25 for Poisson's ratio for most rock. In the absence of tectonic forces the horizontal stress component If there are directional permeability effects, as has been reported from field and laboratory studies, l0,11 then one would expect hydrostatic stress as used in the laboratory to give a different permeability reduction from that occurring under reservoir stress conditions. The influence of stress on directional permeability was measured by a modification of the method first described by Maasland and Kirkham for use on soil samples.12 Their method permits calculation of the permeabilities along each of the three mutually perpendicular axes of a cubic sample. The modification reported in this paper extends the method to observing these permeabilities when the sample is under hydrostatic stress. The Hassler sleeve type of core holder is satisfactory for studying overburden pressure effects on permeability if a known force is applied to the end plugs. Wyble6 used a sleeve core holder but did not load the end plugs. In this paper we combine sleeve pressure and axial force to give permeability changes which we believe are close to those occurring in reservoirs when reservoir pressure changes. The combination of sleeve pressure and axial force assumes, however, that the sleeve pressure simulates both vertical stress and horizontal stress in one direction. METHOD PERMEABILITY ANISOTROPY The Maasland and Kirkhaml2 method of measuring permeability anisotropy uses a cube of porous material which is Open On three faces and has discs with a Center hole for an air inlet cemented to the other three mutually perpendicular faces (Fig. 1). "The Bureau of Mines receives and answers many requests for information on the qualities and properties of American coals, and also publishes many papers that deal with coal characteristics. Compilations of chemical analyses of coal from specific locations are contained in a series of technical papers,2/ by States, whereas typical analyses of coal seams, by States and counties, are given in data books, volumes 1 to 7,2/ by producing districts, as defined in the Bituminous Coal Act of 1937. Bulletin 446, ""Typical Analyses of Coals of the United States,"" condenses and supplements these data books, which do not apply to the Western States. Other coal properties are described in numerous publications listed in the Bureau of Mines Bibliography of Publications. However, no recent publication lists average B.t.u. values by rank on a Statewide and national scale. Averages have been estimated in the past, and some of them are included in this paper for comparison.The average and the ranges of as-received B.t.u. values of American coals on a Nation-wide basis, as found by the statistical method described in this paper, are given in table 2 and on a State-wide basis in table 3. The following is abstracted from table 2:In deriving average B.t.u. values for coals, the results depend on the type of data available and the methods of calculation. The data, or analyses, may represent any of three types of samples - mine, tipple, or delivered. In mine sampling, a channel cut is made of a vertical face of the coal bed, carefully excluding most of the impurities, and the material retained is the sample. It is readily seen that mine samples are selected samples and do not strictly represent the unmined coal bed, unless the coal contains no major impurities. Mine samples generally represent the best-quality coal that could be produced. In contrast to mine samples, tipple and delivered samples represent coal that actually has been mined, and their analyses may show either lower or higher values than mine samples of the same coal, depending on treatment and preparation after mining.Of the thousands of analyses accumulated by the Bureau of Mines, most are of either tipple or delivered samples and represent the coal after it has been mined. Any average calculated from this aggregate of data will, consequently, reflect coal that has been produced, and not unmined coal in situ.The method of calculating an average from the basic data also will have considerable influence. If there are three seams of coal in a county, the average analysis for the county is not necessarily the arithmetic mean of analyses of the three individual seams. For a probable average of unmined coal, the B.t.u. values of each seam should be weighted in proportion to the unmined reserves of each seam. In similar manner, an average for past pro¬duction should be weighed according to the past production for each seam. Figures for coal reserves are only estimates based upon geologic evidence and its interpretation. Production records are much more accurate than estimated reserves, although detailed production records for individual seams by counties are very few."

IT is well known that under appropriate conditions of chill casting, many metals and alloys develop a columnar grain structure having a high degree of preferred orientation.' In cubic materials, this principle has been employed to produce shaped castings with a unidirectional cube oriented columnar grain structure as well as shaped single crystals with a cube axis parallel to the growth ais.' "he purpose of this note is to describe how this same principle can be enlployed to produce wires, rods, or more complex crystal Shapes with a variety of conlpositions in cube or random orientations by a single casting operation. The procedure for directional solidification of in Fig. 2. Examination under crossed polarizers indicated that the striations were a second phase (presumably the B19 phase) which frequently forms initially at primary grain boundaries and then grows toward the interior as thin ribbons. X-ray studies on filings of this alloy reannealed at 1300°C for 15 min indicated a strong pattern of the fcc phase together with a substantial pattern of the B19 phase. The un-annealed filings, however, showed only the pattern of a cold-worked, fcc structure. In these two-phase alloys it appears, therefore, that the B19 phase is transformed into a disordered fcc structure by cold-working. The mechanical properties of these alloys would be of some interest since a fcc structure might be expected to possess greater ductility than the or-thorhombic B19 structure from which it forms. This research was partially supported by Research Grant DE-02455 from the National Institute of Dental Research. columnar grained ingots involves pouring a melt into a preheated mold having a water-cooled copper chill at its base? and controlling the temperature gradient in the mold so as to maintain columnar grain growth from end to end of the ingot.4 This is illustrated schematically in Fig. l(a). It should be noted that the longitudinal temperature gradient promoting unidirectional columnar grain growth is maintained by heat loss primarily through the solidifying ingot to the chill, so that both the temperature gradient and the growth rate diminish with increasing distance from the chill. As the distance from the chill increases? the columnar structure coarsens, and the perfection in preferred orientation tends to increase progressively. Using this same procedure of gradient solidification, Fig. l(b) shows a simple scheme for producing a batch of crystals having the same cube orientation rather than an assemblage of columnar grains. Wires and rods are produced by cementing ceramic tubes to the wall of the mold. The steep temperature gradient produced in the central chamber is controlled by the mold heater to produce favorable conditions for crystal growth. Clearly the success of the operation lies in the selection of individual growing columnar grains by some kind of orifice at the base of each channel in the mold. Using simple constrictions, experience with nickel-base alloys has shown that 4 -in.-diam holes at a distance of -1 in. from the chill yield crystals within 7 deg of (100); closer control of orientation is possible by placing the crystal selector farther away from the chill.

In developing countries throughout the world, gold ores are being processed by mercury amal-gamation, a technique long banned in the U.S. - unless a retort operation is used for mercury recovery - due to mercury toxicity and its effects on the environment. Amalgamation is a simple process that involves contacting a ground, slurried concentrate or ore with mercury in a slightly agitated vessel, usually for several hours, The amalgamated mercury is separated by gravity and then filtered through a fine cloth to collect the gold amalgam as a sponge, which is then fired to remove the final remnants of mercury and produce high quality gold. However, in Peru and other developing countries in South America and throughout the world, tailings are simply discarded into uncontrolled drainages and ponds and the sponge is fired in the open air. Clearly, in this case, environmental friendly and, to make matters worse, is typically conducted by family members of all ages without proper protection. Furthermore, the technique is inefficient, yielding approximately 50% gold recovery. For the past two years, faculty members from Montana Tech in Butte, MT, USA and the Universidad Nactonal del Altiplano in Puno, Peru have teamed to study the La Rinconada Mine Complex located in southern Peru approximately 100 kilometers north of Lake Titicaca and 25 kilometers west of Bolivia. The mining complex is over 5,000 meters above sea level and exists at the foot of a receding glacier in the Andes Mountains. A suite of soil and water samples collected in 2001 documented extensive Hg contamination in the Rinconada area [1]. The present paper summa¬rizes a follow-up investigation in July-2002, in which water samples were collected at numerous locations along the 200 km length of the Rio Ramis, from the Rinconada mine com¬plex to Lake Titicaca, In addition, we report new results of Hg analyses of fish from Lake Titi¬caca, The results of this study have relevance to safety and health concerns for the miners as well as people in downstream communities.

A safe and precise mineral separation alternative to heavy liquids is being used for mineral sands exploration on large scale orebodies. The separation process, Magstream®, uses ferro-fluids and magnetic and centrifugal forces to produce precise split points over a range of specific gravities from 1.5 to 18.0 g/cc. This paper describes a commercial scale exploration program treating, roughly, 90 samples per day in Senegal (West Africa). Separation results comparing Magstream® and conventional heavy-liquid separation are presented.
