This paper attempts to analyze the phenomena involved in the fracture of brittle solids by simple compression. Glass squares standing on edge, and compressed between two parallel steel jaws, developed jagged fractures, roughly parallel to the compression. Polarized light disclosed the presence of high local stress concentrations indicating poor contact all along the contact surfaces with the steel jaws. Teszar has shown that partial contact between the jaws and such a compressed solid causes tensile stresses in the free surfaces of the solid normal to the compression. Furthermore, Scoble has shown that in brittle solids fractures are caused by, and develop normally to, a sufficient tensile stress. It follows that such "partial-contact" cracks must be expected. With optically flat jaws and specimens, no "partial-contact" cracks developed. Instead, very smooth cracks vertical to the compression appeared 'upon release of the pressure. Investigation showed that the friction with the rigid steel opposed the return of the glass to its original width, after creeping on the steel as compression built up, thus setting up tensile stresses in the glass surfaces. It was not found possible to eliminate these "release" cracks. Compressed to destruction, such specimens flew to dust. A Microflash photograph taken during the explosive disintegration revealed: (I) oblique parallel fragmentation cracks, 30" off the direction of the compression; (2) transverse forking fragmentation cracks, normal to the former; (3) release cracks parallel to the compression; (4) a disintegration cloud. Given a distribution of submicroscopic cracks of random orientation throughout the glass, Griffith has shown the highest tensile stresses to be located at the tip of the cracks 30" off the direction of the compression. Although the preexistence of such cracks or flaws in unstressed glass is doubtful, they can be generated by the distorting forces set up by the compression itself. Atoms, in a structure held together by Morse-type forces or bonds, have under tension both a stable and an unstable state-of equilibrium. The difference in energy level between these two states is a function of the tension, and this difference must be borrowed from the thermal energy level of the bonds to reach the unstable state and result in a broken bond. As the fraction of the bonds having at any instant a sufficient thermal energy level is a known function of that level, it is possible to determine, in function of the prevailing tension, the fraction of the bonds that are broken. The number of petroleum refineries in the United States decreased from 399 on January 1, 1947, to 390 on January 1, 1948. On the latter date two additional refineries were under construction , a large one in New Jersey and a small one in Texas . This Crude oil charging capacity, based on complete facilities only , increased in 1947 from 5,569,482 barrels to 6,034,252 barrels per day , owing to material gains reported in all of the larger refining districts . great increase in effective capacity is only in part the result of the completion of major new units for crude-oil processing . Much of it is due to rearrangement and minor additions to existing facilities to permit more efficient and complete utilization . Recent experience has apparently demonstrated that many processing units are capable , with greater emphasis upon maintenance and precise controls , of sustained operations at higher volumes than were indicated in their old rated capacities . This situation doubtless has caused some upward revision in capacity data .

This paper presents results of tests performed to determine minimum concentration of a surfactant used at which coalescence of air bubbles during flotation has low probability to occur. The measurements of the critical coalescence concentration, also known as CCC, were carried out in a device consisting of glass cell into which air was pumped by peristaltic pump through capillaries. The flotation foam was recorded with a high resolution digital camera. Basing on the video records, average diameters of the air bubbles were measured and the values obtained were subsequently used to determine the CCC values. The author of paper determined the CCC values of surfactants tested using the linear regression method, and subsequently analyzed the results obtained. To define initially the capability of a tested surfactant to flotation, efficiency of multiparticle model flotation and flotation of individual size fractions were determined in a flotation apparatus for laboratory use in the presence of only foam making agent at CCC value pre-determined during the tests previously carried out. The tests of coalescence phenomenon were carried out with use of selected flotation frothing agents.

A eficiência na redução dos minérios de ferro no alto-forno é governada pela estrutura e permeabilidade das camadas de carga. A zona granular do alto-forno é a região onde a carga mantém a sua estrutura estratificada, decorrente do carregamento, sob a forma de grãos sólidos. Nessa região, as condições de permeabilidade determinam o perfil de distribuição do gás e, consequentemente, a eficiência térmica e química do reator. Na Usiminas, foi desenvolvido um ensaio de permeabilidade que permite avaliar a perda de carga em leitos formados pelas matérias-primas utilizadas nos altos-fornos, buscando as condições mais favoráveis ao fluxo gasoso. A partir deste ensaio, foi possível avaliar cargas compostas exclusivamente por sínter, pelota ou minério granulado, ou ainda combinações binárias entre estes. O sínter apresentou a maior perda de carga, seguido da pelota e do minério granulado. Apesar disso, o sínter foi o material que permitiu maior acréscimo de vazão do gás. Os ensaios realizados indicaram que 5% de material com granulometria menor que 5 mm é o limite para a concentração de finos do sínter, situação em que foi observado acréscimo de aproximadamente 50% na resistência à passagem dos gases para as velocidades correspondentes àquelas dos altos-fornos. O leito de melhor permeabilidade foi formado por 95% de sínter e 5% de pelota, seguido pelo de 100% de sínter, sem diferença significativa entre essas condições. Em geral, a combinação de sínter e pelota é mais benéfica para a permeabilidade do leito.

The Bureau of Mines investigated the flotation responses of two copper-nickel ore samples from the Duluth Complex with the objective of recovering bulk sulfide concentrates. One of the ores studied was taken from a test pit; the other was taken from a test shaft. The samples were quite similar except that the pit sample analyzed 0.35 pct Cu and 0.11 pct Ni and the shaft sample analyzed 0.69 pct Cu and 0.14 pct Ni. Flotation responses were studied in both laboratory and pilot plant tests. Pilot plant flotation responses were similar for both samples resulting in grades of 12.2 pct Cu and 2.5 pct Ni for the pit sample and 12.2 pct Cu and 2.1 pct Ni for the shaft sample. Weight recoveries were 2.5 pct for the pit sample and 5.2 pct for the shaft sample. Copper and nickel recoveries for the pit sample were 87 and 62 pct, respectively, and 92 and 73 pct for the shaft sample. Both concentrates contained small but significant values of cobalt and precious metals. Cobalt recoveries were low--less than 40 pct for both concentrates. Precious metals contents of the concentrates were 1.59 oz/ton for the pit sample and 0.99 oz/ton for the shaft sample. Silver was the predominant precious metal by weight, but platinum and palladium represented the highest values.

"The syngenetic and epigenetic mechanics of sedimentation and deformation of coal seams resulted in various types of internal structure, as listed below:TYPE I-massive structure with evenly distributed coal constituencies of integrated mechanical properties.TYPE II-broad-banded structure, with bright and dull coal bands of differential mechanical properties.TYPE III-heterogeneous structure, with sheared coal bands and partings of sectional mechanical properties.TYPE IV-contortional structure, with refolded coal layers and deteriorated mechanical properties.TYPE V-porous structure of orogenically crushed and pulverized coal, with disintegrated mechanical properties.The study suggests criteria for the estimation of coal seam internal structure (gamma-gamma density log and cracks density log), which might be related to the evaluation of strata stability and coal mineability.IntroductionIt is common knowledge that coal seams have various internal structures due to different syngenetic and epigenetic events. Investigations of the internal structure of coal seams have been carried out in the coal fields of Western Canada, as follows: geological field studies of coal-bearing strata;?,geophysical borehole surveying studies;?,geological borehole logging and crack density;?,underground phenomenological studies of mine structure;?,chemical coal analysis; and?,mechanical testing of coal samples.These investigations eliminated a large number of criteria previously established for the estimation of coal seam internal structure and indicated that, from an engineering point of view, only two of them are sufficient:(I) density of seam profile (inferred from gamma-gamma log);(2) density of crack s (inferred from geological log).On the basis of these criteria, five main structural types of coal seams have been classified, which might be related to mechanics of deformation and ' failure of mine structures."

IN the broad survey of the nonferrous' metallic elements contained in this book, the reader may well be impressed by the wide range of property combinations offered by the many metals and alloys the metallurgist has prepared since before Kubla Khan. The diversity is great and the overlap is considerable. It is particularly surprising, then, to find the latest structural metal new- comer designated by such extravagant terms as "Cinderella Metal," "Wonder Metal," "Miracle Metal," "The Metal of Tomorrow," "Dream Metal or Nightmare?" and "The Middleweight Champion of the Structural Metals." Of these and others, the most appropriate designation for the metal involved, titanium, appears to be that of The Middleweight Champion. Its intermediate density of 4.5 and elastic modulus of 16 million is a unique combination between the lower density and modulus of magnesium and aluminum and the higher density and modulus of copper, nickel, and iron. It is light, strong, ductile, and corrosion resistant. A chemical neighbor in group IV of the Periodic Table, zirconium, is similar to titanium in many respects but is appreciably denser, 6.5 instead of 4.5, less stiff and relatively much less abundant. On the other hand, the resistance of zirconium to acids and alkalies is better than that of titanium. Also, compensating for its higher density, lower stiffness, and somewhat lower strength level compared with titanium, zirconium has much better permeability to slow neutrons and is much more suitable as a material of construction for nuclear reactors.

Management of historic tailings is a major challenge facing the mining industry and its regulators. However, through improved mineralogical and chemical characterisation of such materials the opportunity to develop better rehabilitation strategies arises. Microanalytical techniques including microscopy, mineral liberation analysis and laser ablation inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICPMS) allow for improved tailings characterisation – but the challenge posed by these techniques is how to use them effectively. Additionally, data sets collected by such techniques must be properly integrated, only then can they assist in the identification of the most appropriate rehabilitation strategies. A study conducted at the Old Tailings Dam (OTD) located at the Savage River Mine, Tasmania allowed for the integrated use of several microanalytical techniques to help evaluate the benefits of a shallow water cover as a potential rehabilitation strategy. Samples (n = 144) from 14 trenches and 11 boring cores (2 m maximum depth) were collected across the OTD. These were subjected to routine acid-base accounting, with a subset subjected to detailed mineralogy using a modified sulfide alteration index (SAI), X-ray diffractometry and mineral liberation analysis (MLA). In addition, representative samples (n = 6) from across the OTD were subjected to laser-ablation ICPMS to characterise the pyrite chemistry. Our results showed that tailings in the northern area submerged under a natural water cover were relatively unoxidised from approximately 1 m depth, with SAI values of 1 to 2. Tailings from the subaerial southern portion were extensively oxidised to approximately 35 cm depth (SAI = maximum 5.8), with fresher materials observed underneath (SAI = 5 to 5.8). Pyrite from across the OTD is enriched in Co, Cu and Ni. Through the integrated application of microanalytical tools, we determined that establishing a water cover of at least 1.5 m depth across the OTD is a suitable rehabilitation option for this historic site. Ramifide conveyor transport of the biggest russian coal mine "Raspadskaya" is simulated by Petri nets. There are 6 longwalls with accidental output. 12 belts, and 5 transfer bunkers at this mine. It is necessary to coordinate transport links for recon- structed conveyor system. Many tasks were solved by dynamic simulation, such as estimation of transport lateness, influence of transfer bunkers on an unevenness of total coal flow, maximum filling of each bunker, maximum time of main conveyor refusal, co-ordination of unloading for dependent bunkers, choice of main conveyor. The problem of mine-wide conveyor transport animation for dispatcher is formulated in reference to mine "Komsomolets". OBJECT OF SIMULATION The biggest russian coal mine "Raspadskaya" is situated on a south part of Kusnetski coal basin (West Siberia). One mines about 20.000 tons of coal out of flat seams by 2.2-4.5 m thickness in a day. There are 6 fully- mechanized longwalls by output 720- 3600 tons in a shift in mine. Coal haulage to surface is carried out by 12 belts having 1.6 - 4.3 km length. For a smoothing over un- evenness of coal flows 5 transfer bunkers to 300 tons were intro- duced. THE estimation of the average value of gold ore involves many considerations, among them the correct sampling of the deposit, the dilution by waste, and the loss of high-grade fines. It is a common experience that, after all these factors have been evaluated, adjustment of the assays is necessary before satisfactory agreement between the calculated mine grade and the mill heads is obtained. In fact, at many mines the latter correction overshadows all others in the preparation of routine estimates. For this reason it is proposed to deal only with the mathematical treatment of mine assays and the problem of bringing estimates into conformity with the corrected mill heads. Mine assays differ from physical measurements because the range of values is very great and these are not symmetrically distributed above and below the average, there being fewer high than low results. There is no widely accepted mathematical procedure for determining the average of series of measurements which exhibit these characteristics. Customary practice consists in empirically reducing high assays until a satisfactory agreement with mill heads is reached. It was thought that more confidence could be placed in grade estimates if a logical basis for calculations could be devised .. In an attempt to find a fundamentally sound procedure, amenable to practical application, many series of assays comprising over 235,000 channel samples (1) were studied at Hollinger Consolidated Gold Mines, Limited. Such an investigation could only be made where records covering many years of operation are available and where tabulating and calculating machines are in use. The results are recorded in the hope that the relationships noted for the large groups of assays used are of fundamental character and that the data will be useful to others dealing with the problem of grade estimation.

Rapid depletion of the world's mineral deposits combined with the expanding demand for metals places great pressure on our ability to provide technologically and economically feasible processes to recover greater amounts of metals from progressively lower grade sources. Chemical mining is one area in which expanding research and development can provide new processes or refinements to existing ones. These new techniques could result in increased production of metals from materials now considered uneconomic to process by current technology. To mine by chemicals requires the interaction of such disciplines as hydrometallurgy, microbiology, chemistry (both organic and inorganic), fluid flow, mineralogy, geology, and of course, economics. One of the least understood areas but one which may end up being an essential part of any chemical mining process is microbiology, i.e., the role of microorganisms in altering minerals and metals in solution.

In 1871, two furnaces at the Glendon Iron Works, which had been blown out on account of the "coal strike," were altered from the open-top plan with side flues for collecting the gas, to closed tops with cup and cone. In one furnace the suppression of the side flues permitted a considerable alteration in the profile, but in the other (No. 5) no change in this respect was made; the side flues were simply bricked up and new ones cut through the sides close to the top. This furnace was in blast over four years, and we can, therefore, form a pretty good idea of the effect of the alterations on the furnace process. The principal dimensions are; Height 72'; greatest diameter, 18'; diameter at tuyeres, 8'; diameter of top, 10'; diameter at stock line (point at which the top of the materials is kept), 11'; cubic contents, 11,900 cubic feet. The table below shows the average results for periods of twentysix weeks each. 1st, of the open-topped furnace; 2d, of the furnace with the first charger used, which was an ordinary cup and cone (diameter of cone 5' 2") 3d, with the charger used ever since, a " double " cone 7' 5" diameter outside, having a central opening 3' in diameter. The diagram (Plate 11) shows the daily variations, in the grade of the irons for the same periods.*

The El Teniente molybdenite plant (Chile), with a nominal capacity of 3,200 tpd of bulk Cu-Mo concentrate, produced approximately 3,385 metric tonnes of Mo during 1998 by using the phosphate Nokes process (LR-744 reagent). This is the only Chilean moly plant which traditionally has depressed copper and iron sulfides with LR 744 reagent, which is a hydrolysis product of P2S5 and NaOH. El Teniente's ore Mo grade is 0.02%Mo and is concentrated to 0.45%-0.50% Mo in bulk Cu-Mo flotation. Subsequently, molybdenite is floated by selective flotation to depress Cu and Fe sulfides, such as chalcopyrite, bornite, digenite and pyrite, to produce typically a 49%-50%Mo molybdenite concentrate. An optimisation program during the last two years was undertaken to improve molybdenite recoveries. Current molybdenite plant technology at El Teniente and use of phosphate Nokes in the process process is reported. Use of phosphate Nokes reagent has increased average Mo recovery from 70.5% in 1977 to a mean 74.7% for the first 4 months of 1999. The global Mo recovery, including bulk flotation, incresed from 42.3% in 1997 to 46.8% in 1998, with a projection of 55.5% for 1999. Mo production per year has increased from 3,181 tons in 1997 to 3,385 tons in 1998 and a projected 4,000 tons for 1999.

During the last decade or more , experimental research on commercial detonators used for initiating the detonation of dynamite and other high explosives has led to important improvements . Developments , especially in the United States , have been directed toward improvement in the construction of detonators to make them safer to manufacture and use . More suitable and safer initiating charges also have been found . Although for many years mercury fulminate was unrivaled as the initiating charge for dynamite , during the last decade it has been replaced to a large extent by less sensitive , more efficient, and cheaper combinations of ignition , priming , and base charges . Commercial detonators were once of relatively simple construction and almost universally identical . Today they are technically complex, with special nodifications for particular uses ; they have developed along different lines n various countries and even among the several manufacturers within any one country .

AT a meeting of the American Society for Testing Materials at Atlantic City, June, 1908, Dr.. C. B. Dudley, in his presidential address,' showed the vital necessity of not only making a steel rail as good as in the past, but of making it considerably better in order to meet the present and prospective require¬ments of railroads. Doctor Dudley requested the co-operation of all who from personal experience could give information that would result in bringing about the production of a steel rail that could be relied upon to meet the present requirements. I have had considerable experience in the practical manufacture of steel of almost every grade, during the past 40 years, and I shall suggest changes that will bring about the results desired. Doctor Dudley has had a long experience as chemical and metallurgical expert for the Pennsylvania railroad, but he frankly admits that up to the present time both he and other metallurgical experts lack the practical knowledge of steel-making that is necessary to state correctly the reasons for the unreliability of the steel rails now produced. The necessity is self-evident for more positive practical knowledge on the part of these experts of what is possible and what is impossible regarding the practical manufacturing of steel rails from the ingot to the, finished product. Chemical knowledge in steel-making is far in advance of what it was years ago, and might be said to cover every requirement (in that department) for producing reliable steel.
